ARSENAL JUST SIGNED TORREIRA!

Emery said this:

“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”

Finally, a DM that has the potential to dominate our midfield for years to come!

I can jump into commentary like this:

Because ‘garra charrua’ means that we give all we have inside. We give all we have to our football, our jersey and our country. We do our best because every time we enter the pitch we represent our family and friends, the most important people for us.

You’ve all been there, you’re 8 years old, you’ve just scored a 20-yard own goal, you’ve let your mates down in the cup final, you know your lunch money is going to be taken for the next three years, but your dad is there…

‘Son, fuck what they think, you could be the next Ian Wright, you have the talent’

Kind of felt like that moment was happening listening to Arsene Wenger talk about West Ham’s Jack Wilshere.

“Jack Wilshere is a playmaker,”

“He is a bit of a Messi type. He makes me think about Mbappe because I played him at 17 years of age because he was an exceptional talent.

“Unfortunately he has been stopped very early by big injuries to his ankle, and I believe that now he’s come out of it. He’s an exceptional player — he can pass people, he can give a final ball, he has a fantastic football brain.

I’m not sure even if you were squinting through a prism of rose after 6 bottles of wine you could draw those comparisons, but hey, there we are. It’s sweet that Wenger is still gunning hard for the players who didn’t quite cut it under him.

Gary O’D, from the Arsenal Medical Services team, announced that Chris Morgan was joining the backroom team. He comes over from Crystal Palace after 2 years service as Head of Physiotherapy.

‘Huge welcome to Chris Morgan who has joined the First Team as our Head Physiotherapist. Chris has come from Crystal Palace where he was Head of Physiotherapy for the last 2 years. Chris also held the same post at Liverpool for eleven years so brings a wealth of experience to us.’

BIG MOVE there son. I don’t know how you write about someone like this, but I thought this farewell not from Liverpool when he left them said a lot.

“Chris is someone who commands the professional respect and personal warmth of the first-team players and all his colleagues at Melwood.

“The dedication and commitment he has shown to Liverpool, over a long period, has been immense. His expertise and experience has rightly gained him industry-wide recognition.

“We thank Chris for his considerable contribution and everyone at the club wishes him success for the future.”

Apparently, Stevie G mentioned him a whole bunch in his book, I’d imagine because he spent a lot of time putting him together again (the piece here). Anyway, I’m sure he’s very good. Arsenal has a very talented bunch of people in that backroom team. I think they’ve been unfairly critiqued over the years with ignorant opinions about how injuries happen and how you should prevent them. Good luck to him, he’s certainly got a lighter workload after some of the exits this last year!

I still think the club might try and sign a wide player before the window shuts. I’d love it if we dropped some dime for Dembele on loan, but as Matt said on the podcast last night, that’s a banter era move for a club trying to show off its elite wings this season.

Right, that’s me done.

Tune into our latest and greatest in the world of podcasting.

  • We talk about Sweden
  • We talk about England, purring over players we shouldn’t be
  • We talk about hate, progression and that naked man from the memes.

Finally!

Top 10 as well.

Did I make a EL spot?

HighburyLegend

I’m sorry but all those changes/signings in only one summer, this is clearly too much for us, we are not used to that anymore.

Gommit

Why did I read the post first..

Dissenter

I must admit that I don’t understand why Juventus is about to spend so much money on Ronaldo.

Marko

Pedro writes a post and what do you know there’s DM not long after. Coincidence I think not. #wakeupsheeople

“After Sergio Busquets, he is tactically the strongest midfielder in Europe.”

Leftsidesanch

buzzing about this signing

Dream10

Torreira. Good signing. Should make an excellent backup for young Ainsley Maitland Niles

Radio Raheem

“After Sergio Busquets…” I like biscuits but come on now.

It’s either Kante or Casemeiro as the best DM in Europe at the moment.

Micheal

After watching him in World Cup, you have to say this is a good signing. What wehave lacked since Gilberto.

Dissenter

Really? Ronaldo is box office and even at 33, in the Italian league, where everyone plays at a snails pace, I can see him still doing very well for a couple of seasons. I agree that £88m is stupid and if the reported £500k pw is true…well. But, if he can guarantee another few sponsors for Juve, another couple of cups and titles and perhaps a shot at the CL, it might work out very well for Juve.

Chika

The right moves….

Guns of Hackney

That plug ugly bastard we’ve signed could be one of the most astute for a very long time.

£25m for a 22 year old? Daylight robbery. Don’t get me wrong, if he does well we’ll lose him to city or Barca for £60m. Winner.

Marko

105 million for a 33 year old is an outstanding bit of business… for the selling club obviously

Radio Raheem

Why are Juventus signing Ronaldo? Have you seen Higuain play?

Only issue with Ronaldo is what effect he’d have on the balance of the side. They haven’t got Bale on the bench or Kroos or Isco etc so play as a team.

I think he’ll more than make up for it with the drive he’d bring. Adding Ronaldo makes them favourites for the Champions league in my book. The fucker gets 3 chances and scores 5, insanely efficient!

Receding Hairline

Juventus agree a deal of 105m pounds for CR7…..

Guns of Hackney

Real need to shift Ronaldo to get Neymar.

Ronaldo won’t be second fiddle to Neymar.

Ronaldo signs a three year deal for £500k pw week at £78,000,000 in wages. Sweet.

Receding Hairline

Spurs should be very afraid …Harry Kane is definitely one of the options Madrid will be looking at. Eden Hazard too.

Remove any of these players from their respective teams and they won’t be anywhere near as strong

Chika

I’m genuinely excited about this signing. Promise I’ll try to ignore the squad number ;D

Radio Raheem

Dybala to Barca

GS88

So excited about Torreira. Love the look of his game. We saw how he never gave CR7 a kick in Uruguay’s victory against Portugal.

We’ve needed this type of player since we lost Vieira and Gilberto years ago.

Guns of Hackney

Receding

Ha ha ha. Kane at Madrid?

No. He is so unsophisticated…he makes Wayne Rooney look like he went to Le Rosey.

China

How many more shirt sales will Ronaldo bring for Juve from the casual fans, neutrals kids etc?

A LOT

Leftsidesanch

Kane’s a good player no doubt but I can’t see him at Madrid

China

If a Chinese kiddo is gonna buy a football shirt it’s about 100000000000% more likely to be Ronaldo’s than higuains

Redtruth

Put Gilberto in a team minus Vieira, Ljungberg, Pires, Henry and Bergkamp and he’d be the shit player he is……He was an overrated liability.

China

Gilberto was far from shit but he was also probably the least ‘special’ player in that starting 11

can someone kindly cope and paste my little piece dedicated to lucas on the last article on here…my gadget is misbehaving. thanks.

Zfree

The small debate on the other post about selling fringe players/not having enough squad depth for a rotated lineup in the EL group stages –

We could still sell 1-2 keepers, jenks, Welbeck, lucas, campbell, maybe another one or two and lineup something like this for those early EL matches (don’t think we sell el neny, just signed and can offer injury cover for first team players. Mustafi only if another CB comes in, not just to find a wide attacking player):

———-Macey/cech/Ospina———

——Chambers—El Neny—-Holding

AMN—New Frenchie—willock—kola

——reiss———Eddie——iwobi

Dissenter

Have to respect Ronaldo though.
He gets to leave on his own terms.

Carts

I’m hear for the Torreria signing. He looks a very good player; and showed a lot of promise in the WC.

Bravo Sven, Raul and Emery. It’s so refreshing seeing us perform a gap analysis and be progamtic in fixing this.

Gentuinely triggered as to why the #1 jersey wasn’t simply taken away from Cech.

Receding Hairline

@ Chika

This shirt sales thing has been discussed extensively. Clubs do not really make that much from shirt sales . Clubs receive the initial worth of the short deal then 10-15% of total sales generated.

KAY Boss

#welcomTorreira. wishing him all the best and hopefully will become a legend though footballers these days are mercenaries. Dissenter, don’t worry about Juve, Ronaldo is the player Serie A had being craving for. I mean the ‘type of player’ that league had craved for.

Dissenter

Jean Seri only went for 17.7 million eventually to Fulham. Their billionair owner has learned his lesson well.
There’s something not quite right with him, the way better teams moved away from signing him.

gambon

“The fucker gets 3 chances and scores 5, insanely efficient!”

Not remotely true Raheem,

ROnaldo scores a lot of goals because he shoots all the time. He has a team built around supplying him.

He scored 41 from 260 shots last season. Worse than 1 in 6.

Juve will have to make sure they are capable of building a team around him.

Dissenter

Fans aren’t technocrats but can see the weaknesses in the team from a mile away.
This is the first window in 10-15 decades that the club is actually addressing basic weaknesses in the squad.
We aren’t being told an apple is an orange and have the fundamentals of negotiations explained to us again by a certain know-all.

You may not like the personnel the are bringing in but there’s methodology to it that is obvious.
I still think there will be surprises as to departures though. We are still going to clear out 4-6 players.

Redtruth

I much preferred Edu in midfield than Gilberto Silva.

gambon

Dont agree that Ronaldo will drive anywhere near enough shirt sales to pay even 2% of the outlay on him.

Dissenter

gambon,
“Juve will have to make sure they are capable of building a team around him.”

How do you build a team around a 33 year old?
It’s like building a mansion with a foundation of ice slabs.

Receding Hairline

Guns are you saying Harry is not pretty enough to play for Real Madrid .

They will need to find a lot of goals from somewhere fast and where better than from Harry Kane. He takes just as many shots on goal as Ronaldo, thinks of virtually nothing but scoring goals. He is perfect for them.

gambon

Dissenter

Thats why I dont think its a good signing.

Dissenter

*****This is the first window in 10-15 YEARS that the club is actually addressing basic weaknesses in the squad*****

It’s years, not decades. Have the feeling that I have to soon adorn a flak jacket because the usual crowd of deplorable will start sniping.

Marko

This is the first window in 10-15 decades that the club is actually addressing basic weaknesses in the squad.

Amen brother. This transfer window has made an absolute mockery of anything Arsene has done possibly ever. Addressing squad issues? What is happening

Dissenter

Madrid have to be geniuses
They buy a Lamborghini, drive it to high mileage and still get to sell it for as much as they bought it.

Real will go for Neymar. Kane is not at all marketable. Not at all. He can’t speak, looks bad and doesn’t have any panache.

Expect a world record £250/£300m for Neymar or as a runner up prize, a £150m bid for Hazard. They may even go back for Morata plus cash for Hazard.

Receding Hairline

@ Dissenter

Jean Seri spent two two or three windows practically offering himself to top clubs and they all said no. If he does well at Fulham though they will have the last laugh as someone is going to then pay top dollar for him.

McBright is Wright

I really dont get it! we just signed our long sort after No 4 and Arsenal fans, on an Arsenal blog, is buzzing and busy talking about Ronaldo to Juve and Kane to RM?
Its mind buggling that!

InsideRight

What stands out for me is the sheer contrast with the way we used to do business. Transfers were trailed for weeks then often faded out into nothing. Getting business done decisively, and going for players that may not be superstars but who have real ability and give balance to the side in positions that need strengthening, has been the highlight of my Arsenal summer. It really feels like the club hasn’t just turned a corner, but has screamed around it with the handbrake up, burning rubber and already in gear to accelerate away. A lot of people accepted Wenger’s… Read more »

One things for certain is that CR7 signing for Juve will push up the cost of Serie A tv rights.

Where Serie A, as a whole, have fucked themselves is due to a lack of new infrastructure.

However , a big name like CR7 will definitely create a buzz around the league on a worldwide scale.

Chika

Receding Hairline

I was only referring to the squad number, just the number. Nothing to do with sales or whatnot. No biggie really.

WengerEagle

Yeah interested to see what Real Madrid do now.

Think it’s a near certainty that they end the window with one of Neymar or Eden Hazard, completely depends on PSG.

Gargantuan shoes to fill in Madrid though, Ronaldo will hold all of those scoring records for a long time.

WengerEagle

Presuming that Juventus will have to move on a few players now, wonder if Douglas Costa is available?

“I really dont get it! we just signed our long sort after No 4 and Arsenal fans, on an Arsenal blog, is buzzing and busy talking about Ronaldo to Juve and Kane to RM?” We all knew Torriera was going to sign for us even before the world cup started. It is actually not a shock deal. Just like Mahrez having a medical at City is not shocking anyone. PSG wont sell Neymar to Madrid. They don’t have to and they tell Madrid to do one.
Neymar has to be careful because his marketability is already on the precipice after all the nonsense he pulled at the WC. If he conducts himself poorly to force a move, it could get ugly.

Even Madrid know their limits. They can’t bully a nation-state owned club that doesn’t give a damn about 200 million.

Dissenter

“I really dont get it! we just signed our long sort after No 4 and Arsenal fans, on an Arsenal blog, is buzzing and busy talking about Ronaldo to Juve and Kane to RM?
Its mind buggling that!”

It’s a football blog and Arsenal doesn’t exist in isolation.
Why do you moan so much?

WengerEagle

Modern player power is a different animal though, if Neymar is sulking and trying to force his way out of the club then it would be very difficult to say no to RM if they come knocking with a 300-400 million Euro bid.

He missed an awful lot of matches last season even before his injury and realistically, they win domestic honours even without Neymar.

gambon

Do Real Madrid already have Ronaldos replacement in a certain Welshman?

Dissenter

Surely city have to let a player leave since Mahrez is about to be signed.

WengerEagle

Doubt it gambon, really do rate Bale as elite myself but he doesn’t even average half of the goal output that Ronaldo did.

He’s also 29 so no spring chicken anymore, hard to build around him with a 4-5 year plan in mind.

Also bizarrely still doesn’t seem to be that popular in Madrid.

Dissenter

Wenger Eagle
You don’t use “modern player power” one season after you’ve just done the same at another big club. The only reason why Barca yielded was the release clause.
PSG didn’t get Neymar to win the domestic title. The got him to win the CL.

300-400 million isn’t as tempting an oil sheikh who obviously didn’t buy the club to make money.

gambon

WE

Yeah but replacing Ronaldo like for like isnt possible. Whatever happens they have to change the system.

Dissenter

I actually think Ronaldo may struggle more, at 33 years old with the defenses in Serie A.
The Madrid team were built around him, the Juve one, not so much.

Freddylekgunner

Madness that Ronaldo deal.

Dissenter

Good thing we did our business early.
You get the feeling that there will be an inflationary effect on the market when the WC comes to an end.

Radio Raheem

Gambon I was obviously exaggerating. The point remains Ronaldo’s goal scoring feat in the Champions league is above another and I suspect it’s the main reason he has been brought in. Working for Ronaldo has brought Real three champions leagues in a row. I’m sure Juventus wouldn’t mind that. Football lost its sense of value a while ago now so pointless delving into whether he’d make the return financially. As for the football I have little doubt he’d bang in goals for them and can see him going on at the top level for the next 4 years. Even at… Read more »

WengerEagle

Sad to see the end of BBC and MSN now with the Neymar and Ronaldo departures combined with the aging of Benzema/Suarez and injury trouble Bale has had.

That few year period from 2013-2017 when they both had long spells of being at top flight were the best forward lines that I’ve ever witnessed in the game, by far with MSN just about edging the Real front 3. Attacking football porn.

Joy to watch, just like Peps Barcelona.

Marko

Presuming that Juventus will have to move on a few players now, wonder if Douglas Costa is available?

Yes please. Brilliant player always had a soft spot for Douglas Costa. Did I say soft spot I meant rock hard boner

Receding Hairline

“Good thing we did our business early.”

Guess you also mean the earlier business in January…it now seems we got Aubameyang for a pittance considering his goal scoring record. Add Lacazette to that and we are hoarding goal scorers .

If we wasted any time on Torriera we would have been outbid after the world cup.

WengerEagle

Yeah gambon and it may benefit them in La Liga.

As good as Ronaldo was at Real they were nearly always second best over the course of a season to Messi and Barcelona.

More even spread of goalscoring duties and more license for the likes of Bale to show what he can do rather than always look to pander to Ronaldo.

Dissenter

Wenger Eagle
Don’t you think this Ronaldo exit has disrupted the power balance between European clubs
Suddenly La liga has become weaker, it seems.
I stand corrected but Ronaldo definitely helped to place the best teams in La liga above the premier league.

Marko

Good thing we did our business early.
You get the feeling that there will be an inflationary effect on the market when the WC comes to an end

Very smart this summer especially with Leno and Torreira. Had we waited we might have missed out on Leno and granted Torreira had a release clause it’s very possible had we waited long enough Sampdoria would have offered him fresh terms kept him for another season and sold him next summer for much more

Dissenter

Juve’s income isn’t that massive.
How will they fund this?
Are they going to be listed on the London/New York stock exchanges? Is the deal going to be crowd-funded? 🙂

WengerEagle

Dissenter

Makes zero sense to keep a player that is a disruptive influence and misses games when there’s enough money on the table to go out and buy 2-3 players who each are not far off him though.

It’s not as simple as saying that PSG will refuse to sell him as money isn’t an issue. It’s gotten to the stage where players can drive themselves out of clubs and even if the club’s relent, it generally ends up causing more harm than good for their own team.

WengerEagle

Yeah Dissenter La Liga will have taken a hit, just like it did with Neymars departure.

As long as they have Messi though they’ll be good. Also you have to imagine that Real go out and buy a superstar now, would be a shock if Perez didn’t.

Marko

I think the markets calmed down a bit and should stay that way I don’t see the Ronaldo deal disturbing the price of players too much. I mean last summer we bid 90 million for Lemar and an okay year later he moves to Atletico for 50+ million sounds about right to me.

Alone + Easy Target

They might have to sell Higuain and just pair Ronaldo with that twink Dybala upfront. Just thinking about it makes me moist. Footballistically that is.

Receding Hairline

@ Wenger Eagle

You are ignoring the fact that the only reason Neymar is at PSG was that Barcelona set a buy out clause they felt no one could afford, a very costly mistake they are now rectifying with ridiculous release clauses for the remaining players.

I do not know the current buy out clause for Neymar at PSG, his lawyer claimed he does not have one, but if Neymar wants to leave PSG going to war with the owners will be the wrong way to go about it.

WengerEagle

Higuain looks a goner for sure. Ronaldo plays as a CF now.

Can see Chelsea signing him with Morata being sold back to Spain or even Italy.

Dissenter

Marko
You know we would have waited while the ditherer did his thing.
We could have has Mustafi earlier that window for about 20 million. We waited until Mertasacker got injured and Valencia promptly profited from our desperation.

You have football agents in France publicly saying that Wenger commited footballing suicide by declining to sign Kante twice when he had the first refusal.

Freddylekgunner

Given Ronaldo will have almost no resale value given his age and on that huge wages, it just doesn’t make sense.

azed

“They might have to sell Higuain and just pair Ronaldo with that twink Dybala upfront. Just thinking about it makes me moist. Footballistically that is.”

Huguain to Chelsea for money and Moratta or Dybala to Barca/PSG/UTD for big money.

azed

Madrid might also go after Salah.

WengerEagle

RH

Yeah true, just feel there’s too much smoke for it not to materialise though.

I’d be very surprised if Neymar didn’t have a contract stipulation in there that would enable him to leave, can’t believe he would sign on being happy to play in Ligue 1 for most of his prime years.

Also find it hard to envisage Real letting Ronaldo leave without a massive name to come in, only really Neymar fits the bill.

Carts

Raising the €100m isn’t going to be a massive challenge, to be honest.

As WE said, Higuain might be in his way out. Even so, I’m certain juve have something in mind.

Could be a massive merry-go-round about to happen.

I think Real will go hard for Neymar > Mvappe followed by Hazard of the above two fail

Freddylekgunner

If Chelsea sign Higuain it means they haven’t a lesson, he’ll be another flop like Morata. At least the latter still has age on his side.

If Torreira does develop into a £60m player, why are we thinking it is inevitable we will sell him on? Surely I hope by then we will have won a few league titles so that other key players from other big clubs will want to be playing for us!

…Or else that should be the ambition!
