Arsenal look to sign 2nd defensive midfielder of the window (unreal, right?!)

What a thoroughly fabulous day.

I rolled out at 0930 to meet James who writes the blog sometimes, couldn’t get into the bar of choice because it was too busy… which really fucked me off. We jumped in a taxi, hit up O’Hanolons and watched England TROUNCE Sweden in a very effective 2-0 victory.

A few things stood out again, and I hate to say it… but Trippier really is an excellent right back. He’s strong, mobile, very composed and his final ball is exceptional whether that’s coming in from out wide in open play, or from dead balls. He’s such a good player. Harry Mcguire is also excellent, if he were a foreign defender, we’d pur over his ability to distribute from the back, surely a big move lined up for him? Also, what is it with the north and producing top talent? Our whole backline has risen up from weaker clubs. It’s great to see. The south needs to sort itself out, the softies.

I’ve also got to wind-in my criticisms of Jordan Pickford. I have Richard Wright issues, and I thought his performances at Sunderland were kind of standard because anyone can look good playing for a shite team. The real talent is being able to make those world class saves when you only have 3 things to deal with in a game. Yesterday, he was man of the match for me. He made some unbelievable saves. Outside his incredible athleticism, his ability to play with the ball at his feet is surprisingly impressive. He has a great range of passing and he certainly seems cut for the future of keeping.

Sweden wasn’t a tough test. They were a very organised midtable Premier League team. They blew it out of the park simply making it to the quarterfinals. So well done to them, but a bigger test awaits in the next round.

The Croatia / Russia game was also pretty damn exciting. The Russians put in a hearty performance, not really caving to the more impressive qualities of the Croats. That said, it was a pretty drab performance from the away team. I have yet to be blown away by Croatia, and if the performance they put on yesterday is anything to go by, I’m not overly worried about the semi-final.

Sure, we’re going to struggle with their midfield, but if we can bring high-intensity pressing and bypass them with salt of the earth long balls, we have every chance of causing them headaches on Wednesday.

I don’t really fear France or Belgium like I would a Spain or a Germany. I think we have every chance of winning the World Cup now, regardless of who we play. The winds seem to be favouring Belgium in the other match, and you’d have to have us down as favourites against Croatia. It’s going to be a massive game this week, but win or lose, the boys have overachieved in this tournament so far and Gareth Southgate deserves a lot of credit for putting on a show.

Back in England, it looks like Arsenal have signed Matteo Guendouzi (vid), the French under-20 plays as a number 4. He’s very quick, he looks pretty strong if the videos of him bulldozing players is anything to go by, and he seems pretty suited to a side that want to break quickly. His passing isn’t that ambitious, but he’s capable. He has dabbled box to box and has the skill the break the lines with his pace, so there’s a hint of Jack Wilshere in there too.

So we’ve not just signed one DM this window, we’ve probably signed two. Not bad considering we haven’t really dealt with that position since the summer of 2008 when we moved on Flamini, Gilberto and Diarra in one window.

If Ornstein’s tweet was anything to go by, that’ll be the last of our business this summer.

There are rumours that the captaincy is going to be part of Rambo’s new deal, Ivan G keen to be filmed shaking the Welshman’s hand last week. Our CEO really is making the most of this summer, and who can blame him, he’s finally winning.

Maybe it’s too tough for the club to move players on, as the manager hasn’t had a chance to coach them or see them in action? No word on Welbeck’s new deal. Though there are strong rumours linking Ospina with a move to Boca Juniors which sounds like a good deal for everyone.

Joel Campbell, a player we just can’t quit, is being linked with moves away to Fener (standard) and Lazio. We’re also mulling over the abilities of Lucas, a player I thought was pretty handy, and maybe deserved less of the cold shoulder.

Right, that’s me done. See you tomorrow you beautiful people. x

The reason we would have probably lost to Columbia with our so called golden generation was because their egos would have got the better of them.

Secondly, they were not as good as they thought they were.

Thirdly, they never had a manager who knew what he was doing with them.

Simple really.

So happy it’s Croatia and not Russia on Wednesday.

Playing against a better team will work in England’s favour.

The country needs this.

Bring it on!

Although Southgate is doing a great job as England manager, I feel the gushing praise for him from all sides is slightly false. If we go back a few days to the penalty shoot out v colombia, Henderson misses his penalty and we looked like we were going out until the colombian hit the bar. Things could have been so different and the level of abuse that would have come his way for wasting a golden opportunity to progress would have been immense. He got lucky… The colombian who hit the bar saved his and England’s skin. Because Southgate is… Read more »

I want to revert back to some of the negativity addressed to both Xhaka and Ozil from what should be elements in both Switzerland and Germany who have expressed nothing short of racist views on their respective performances. Xhaka responded to Meissner in a highly articulate way reminding him that most of the footballers who play for National Team and more importantly a sizeable chunk of Swiss population are immigrants. The second point he made was that when the players put on national shirt and play for country they are 100% committed to the cause. Ozil by contrast has chosen… Read more »

Torreira looks like he is being built up to be Arsenal’s saviour in midfield. Sometimes when you watch a player you get a feeling that they are the real deal or have a nagging doubt about them. Looking back, when Vieira came into the side there were no doubts. When Fabregas started at a young age you just knew he was the real deal. I hope Torriera settles into the club flawlessly The father was publicly quoted talking about the player (and his family’s) hesitation about the move because of the cultural shock. He’s ayoung man from a small town in Uruguay and doesn’t speak English. Sometimes we as fans have to remember the human stories behind transfers and be careful not to set expectations too high for new arrivals, especially foreign ones. “Unless we get someone in to complement torreira style of play we may get exposed in the air..”

Not just in the air. The little fella cannot and should not be expected to plug all the gaps defensively in midfield. Too high an expectation.

Arsenal will continue to be exposed in defensive situations in midfield unless Emery really earns his corn and gets a real working defensive system off the ball out of the contingent in this area. “Nagging doubts” that even a system can resolve individual weakness in this area.

I would like to think that England have a very good chance of reaching the final not least because Croatia had a very difficult match against Russia which was both energy and emotion sapping. Also several of their players were struggling physically at end of game and in case of the goalkeeper he looked like he had an injury. England’s midfield is rather average in contrast to Croatia, but I do think that we are better in other departments of the game. Sorry fellow gooners.

Receding Hairline

“But then we have fools celebrating the signing of a young squad player over a signing that would have been a first team starter.”

9:42AM in the morning and you are already calling posters fools.

What is wrong with someone commenting on the signing of a prospect??

How many Arsenal games actually ended 5-3 or 5-4 last season??

Marko

No-one has the right to challenge the authenticity of their
commitment. The same should incidentally be the case when they play for Arsenal

Why’s that exactly?

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal have had “defensive” aerial weakness whether at corners, set pieces or
at contra attack and that was patently obvious last season in particular.

Height is of course a factor, but not exclusive. There have always been small players with very good jumping ability. However, the overwhelming impression I got with our current crop of players particularly last season was their unwillingness or inability to compete in the air in midfield and defensive situations.

Surprisingly the exception to the rule was when we were on the attack and
took corners and set pieces. Arsenal had a very good record there.

Black Hei

“This Matteo Guendouzi kid should replace El neny immediately.”

Lol, Matteo plys his trade in League 2. I don’t think he is ready for EPL action right on the go.

Elneny on the other hand is a proven squad player.

Can we not have this over reaction.

Chika

Ishola

“But then we have fools celebrating the signing of a young squad player over a signing that would have been a first team starter.”

Signing a young player does not prevent the club from signing a first team starter. You’re simply an idiot of immeasurable proportions.

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal need to be recruiting both mature and youth players.

Guendouzi will be I suspect in a similar situation as Maitland-Niles, Mavropanos, Nelson and Nkietah.

I would expect these players to be competing for places in domestic cup competitions and even possibly against weak opposition in Europa Cup. Otherwise I would expect them to be mainly bench players as well as supplement game
time in U23 league matches.

Ishola70

Mr Hairline You were not actually one of the fools that were celebrating the signing of a young squad player over a first team starter as far as I could see. There were others guilty of that. But yet again in your thirst to argue the toss you have got the wrong end of the stick again. There were poster(s) on here celebrating the signing of a young squad player over a first team starter signing.

Celebrating one signing over another.

You understand now? Good.

Black Hei

Heading ability in the mid is over rated.

I much prefer zippy DMs.

Yup, I don’t think we need a beast of a DM to pair with a midget of a DM, just so the beast can head all the balls.

If someone hits the ball long, it is probably a foot race. If it is to a tall burly striker, the defending is usually done by our CBs.

Ishola70

And you are the idiot for jumping in without even realising the actual point that was being put across.

Emiratesstroller

Marko I would never challenge the “commitment” of Xhaka. He played more games and minutes than any other outfield player at club. If you want to criticise his performance that has to do with your view of his ability and not effort. Ozil is what he is an immensely gifted player, but in performance inconsistent. Frankly I don’t believe for one minute that when he plays for us that there is a lack of commitment and the same is the case when he plays for Germany. Regarding xhaka, playing a lot doesn’t equal commitment. Tracking your man into the penalty area instead of being a lazy tosser and standing still would show me commitment. That is the minimum required as a central mid. Maybe he didn’t know any better,or maybe Wenger told him not to go with his man. Or maybe he wasn’t commited enough…..

Marko

Frankly I don’t believe for one minute that when he plays for us that there is
a lack of commitment

First off we do have a right and secondly we can’t question the commitment of Özil? Were you living under a rock that good year plus where he kept refusing the contracts we were offering him and nearly ran it down. And have you seen him the last two years playing for us in games when we’ve needed him and not to mention the amount of “sick days” he’s had. But no we can’t question his commitment to Arsenal

Emiratesstroller

PssimisticCat I have watched a lot of games that Xhaka has played and I see absolutely no lack of commitment or effort. There are an awful lot of statements made about his personality and performance level and that colours people’s judgment about him. He had an excellent game for Switzerland against Serbia and scored a wonderful goal in that match. Yet the whole debate since then has been how he and Shaquiri reacted with eagle hand sign. The whole focus in Germany about Ozil has been about his meeting with Erdogan and his perceived lack of loyalty. This has come… Read more »

Xhaka wasn’t tracking back in defence on a regular basis last season. As some people in here called him – deep lying playmaker, he was not sitting that “deep”, so when the opponents were counter attacking, he would just stroll back or even refuse to move and as a result we kept conceding easy goals. When I see him play I cannot stop thinking how in his mind, his main task on the pitch is to give cute quarterback passes. All the really shit players just so happened to be immigrants (Rudiger, Boateng, Gundogen, Khedira, Ozil)

Emiratesstroller

Raptora I could see Emery playing next season with a “Diamond Formation” in midfield with two strikers up front. That would allow Torreira as DMF playing behind Ramsey and Xhaka in Central Midfield with Ozil in attacking midfield position. That would allow us to play two strikers up front with Aubameyang and Lacazette both playing in that formation. When you analyse Arsenal’s current resources and the lack of an established fleet footed winger that would be my preferred choice. Let us judge all our players performance level after they have trained and been coached by Emery.

The feedback I have had for a very long time is that the regime at Arsenal under Wenger was dreadful with no discipline or structure.

There were many players joining Arsenal who were highly rated by previous

We have got a regime change with a new head coach who will make his own

No marquee signing, when we badly have the need of a winger, would mean an average window.

We were indeed a couple of signings with the Alexis team of winning the EPL in that Leicester year. Now we don’t have Alexis but we’ll have the other ingredients – DM, GK and CF. Pretty sad tbh.

Some stuff saying Torreira will be No.11, what is going on?

Receding Hairline

With all the exotic names some on here seem to want for the winger positions no one has looked at Demarai Gray .

Fast, skillful…a little raw granted . But considering we are lacking in quality English players and we are an English club it might not be a bad shout.

After ten years of false dawn’s under Arsenal Wenger, I will wait to see how our new manager goes about resolving all the obvious frailties in the team, before passing judgement.
