Sokratis lands + Ramsey starts training, but where’s the deal?

No sooner had I posted yesterday, than the announcement that Sokratis had landed as our brand spanking new defender.

What a day.

The 29-year-old has come in from Dortmund for £16m. He’ll bring leadership, fear, and prison yard bully-boy tactics to the dressing room. He’s so scary, he already has Aubameyang calling him Papa online. Total and utter dominance of other men is quite the skill.

I’d still quite like to see another young centre-back coming in. Someone with a touch more experience than Holding and Chambers. I’m not sure where the deal for Soyoncu has gone, but you’d imagine after the retirement of Per Mertesacker and the horrible injury of Koscielny, it’ll be something that’s top of mind.

I was also mulling over the new deals for Chambers and Xhaka. I know there’s a lot of love in the fanbase for both, but I’ve always been under the impression that they’re lacking in the pace department. Odd deals, but I guess you just have to trust in the new process.

The deal for Torreira has yet to happen, but I guess with Uraguay still firmly in the World Cup, it’ll be at least another week.

Mesut Ozil has finally picked up the number 10 of Jack Wilshere, which means he’s certainly playing an important role next season.

The other deal that’s still on the table is the Aaron Ramsey one. We’re pushing into ‘OH GOD NO PLEEEEASE SIGN DA TING’… you’d have to imagine there’s a deadline on this. No way we can let him head into the last year of his deal. According to rumour, he’s been rejecting deals like bad swipes on Tinder. As I mentioned before, his agent will be pushing for Ozil like money, because why not? He’s the best performer at the club. However, you can see it from the clubs perspective. You can’t level out that sort of money on a player who goes missing with injury… that said, you have Mesut who goes missing in big games and on random holidays when the going gets tough.

Tough times.

At least we know he’ll be floated out the back door if he doesn’t decide to stay on. We’re in a ruthless regime now. Though I do wonder what you do if he says he doesn’t want to leave? Do you threaten him with U23 football all year? That’d be mean. Let’s see where this goes, I don’t like the ‘he’s waiting to see what the squad looks like’ banter.

England is up a bit later this afternoon. We saw Belgium beat Japan after going 2-0 down. A lot of talk of Belgium being frauds, but the boys stepped up in the end and kept the flicker of the golden generation dream World Cup win alive. I love how the internet has rallied against people calling out Lukaku for lacking intelligence. It’s amusing to now watch it go the other way, people clamouring to be the first to congratulate him on intelligently passing the ball 3 yards into space. It was a lovely dummy for the final goal yesterday, but the genius post-rationalization commenatary is a bit much.

I also have to say, regardless of the ‘I need to be offended’ brigade online, the idea that it’s now a bit racist to comment on a player’s physical stature or attributes is next level. Sport, literally the one living in the world where being a genetic freak is exactly what lands you big dollars, is largely down to your power and pace. You think Per Mertesacker is making £90k a week if he’s 5ft5? You think Aaron Ramsey is anywhere near the Premier League without the engine he has?

I appreciate there are levels to this, and it’s certainly nuanced, but I think we lose our damn minds sometimes.

Right, England up in 4 hours, see you in the comments!

Before Bayern Munich and Pool on the semis and final where he didn’t score he was in a run of 25 goals in 15 games in the UCL not scoring in 1 of the 15 games. He is not getting younger and I don’t doubt that he is not the same Ronaldo as before because he obviously changed his style, but those stats are for UCL group stages and KO rounds from the last year or so. If he remains healthy I know who I would put my money for top goalscorer in the EPL if he was to come.

  2. TitsMcGee

Every player hits a wall eventually and ronaldo will hit his very soon. Spending that kind of money for a 2 year return is crazy.

“Let’s set this straight. Footballers are absolutely not athletes. Not even close.”

That has to be the least sensible thing you’ve posted here.
The average distance covers per player, per game in the premier league is eight miles.
The average distance run in training daily is about four miles for every player.
Sum that up for the season

    Footballers are not athletes?

    Conte is a classless idiot.
Everyone knows the game he’s playing, yet h doesn’t seem to clear.
He’s determined to get Chelsea to fire him and he’s acting as crassly as possible to make it happen.

Oh come on…I’ve said much dumber things that that!

8 Miles is nothing. Honestly, look at footballers dripping around the pitch and looking like they are underwater. Even after the game during the interview…which takes place minutes after, they are still blowing hard and sweating like an Uber driver.

    Hairless wankers.

I don’t even think a Chinese club can offer £88million for Ronaldo.
No £33 year old should cost that much money.

  7. Guns of Hackney

Ronaldo sells shirts. The Asians love that bullshit. Add the Man Yoo connection and I reckon they’d make their cash back.

Is the Ronaldo thing real or is he trying for yet another pay raise? How many do those two get a year…?

  8. Dennis

Rkn Ronaldo may go Juve.. ego point maybe re perez ‘ derisive ‘he says that every year.>!!) haha
, and even if differnt htan such – as well or solely perhaps maybe great ‘career move’ in context .. if Italian league slower than Spanish..

Juve status as been said.. possible ecl

There was a famous sledge once from an Aussie to a Sri Lankan. I’m paraphrasing but it was something like “he hasn’t run all day…throw a mars bar on the wicket and see if he’ll run for that”.

So who are top athletes then Guns?

You are becoming the new Redtruth.

Very angry since your hero Arteta was snubbed.

Don’t lump me in with that twat.

    Grand Tour Cyclists.
Any runner at 1500m and up.
    WWE wrestlers.
    Real Athletes ie Decathlon.

Now, I appreciate all of the above are mostly on the juice but…it’s still pretty hard to ride a bike up a mountain.

Arteta came to me in a dream last night and said “I’ll be Arsenal manager in 2 years”. I cried and changed out his Lego hair for a ponytail. Weird dream.

  13. WengerEagle

Lol what is this shit, if you can’t beat them then sign them?

Juventus have a screw loose paying 100m for a 33 year old Ronaldo. He’s a player you have to build the team around too. They’re just desperate for that CL win from the looks of it haha.

    RM- Neymar looking inevitable now.

  14. Leedsgunner

I hope Neymar likes pork! Didn’t they have pig’s heads thrown on the pitch to greet Figo when he returned to the Nou Camp? (or was it at the Bernabeu?)

For Neymar, this is not just about money… it’s about winning the Balon d’Or.

  15. Leedsgunner

If Neymar does go to Real Madrid, no one will be breathing with relief more than the Spurs. They’ll get to keep him for one more season.

In the form he is in and if he wins the Golden Boot, Harry Kane is easily a £200m player at the moment.

  16. Cesc Appeal

Will it be Neymar and Icardi for Madrid?

No way they can bring in Neymar and Kane in the same window, it sounds ridiculous but that is £500-600 Million just with those two.

  17. WengerEagle

    CA

Don’t see Kane ending up at RM personally, think he’ll end up at United or even Citeh possibly.

Whereas since Neymar was at Santos as a teen it’s seemed like an inevitability that he will end up at Real Madrid one day.

It actually surprised me when Barcelona beat them to the punch, he’s never struck me as a Barcelona type player. But he benefited massively from playing by Messi’s side for 4 years and improved dramatically as a player.

The PSG move I think most recognised was just an attempt to dilute the fan revolt of joining Real Madrid after playing at Barca. I said when they signed him that he’ll be there for a year or two at the very max.

Seems like the right time now with RM seemingly moving on from Ronaldo and needing somebody new to carry the club on the pitch and the brand off the pitch.

Neymar fits both criteria as the best player in the world under 30 and the most marketable player in the world.

  18. Guns of Hackney

    WE

Shit, I know…I thought I’d left the engine running but it turned out to be him struggling to string two words together. Painful. You could almost hear the IQ draining out of him.

Him at Real would be a PR disaster. Not happening in a million years. Foreign teams are so much more sophisticated than the British.

  19. raptora

Kane is seriously annoying with his multiple interviews saying the same thing over and over again. Ye, he’s a spud but even if he was an Arsenal player, I’d have enough of him. Holy balls. Not even remotely likeable in my books.

  20. Leedsgunner

If Lucas Torreira is brought in soon, we’ll have basically transformed our team’s spine in one transfer window… before August! New GK, new CB, new DM…

So much for Wenger’s repeated assertions year after that it was difficult to sign players… it’s amazing what can be done if you have a plan! The truth is Wenger didn’t want to sign players because he didn’t want to put the work in to a market he clearly didn’t understand.

  21. Marko

I mean I wouldn’t pay 88 million for him but in this market where shite players cost 35 million pounds why not. And playing in Italy would probably get him another 3 years at the top. Be interesting to see how Madrid replace him though. Hazard seems too bland and boring to me I mean don’t get me wrong he’s good but he doesn’t score near enough. Neymar and Icardi or Lewandowski seems about right.

But the question is how do we continue our summer. Torreira is certain as is the prospect of ANOTHER midfielder and CB. Almost certain to buy a winger too but who. Lozano? Guedes? Pavon? Gelson? Is it going to be two? What about the LW position? All this and more in another exciting episode of Arsenal after Wenger

  22. Marko

So much for Wenger’s repeated assertions year after that it was difficult to sign players…

Not just Wenger Leeds we heard all the lemmings that supported him and untold speak how it wasn’t easy it’s not like buying a loaf of bread and it’s not like playing football manager and people who criticised him should still to PlayStation. Heard all the excuses and the second he’s gone and we have a team in place we’re acting like a proper football club and treating the transfer market with respect

  23. Leedsgunner

Mina, the CB is called Mina. Rumours are Barca might have to off load him because they have too many non Spanish players on their books… I wouldn’t mind him at Arsenal. The boy is 23? He has a great leap too!

  24. WengerEagle

Lewandowski is 30 and he would be a man signing just as Hazard would from a RM pov post Ronaldo. Underwhelming in the CL and for Poland in Cup competitions and they could give a hairy waffle about him scoring for fun in the Bundesliga.

Icardi isn’t even at that level yet in my book and would also be bland.

It’s only really Neymar that stands out as a Ronaldo replacement or M’Bappe, don’t see PSG as quick to give up the latter personally being French and 19 with sky high potential to be one of the best strikers we’ve ever seen.

  25. TheBayingMob

I was with you until this …

    “WWE wrestlers”

    LOL!

    Are you taking the piss?

No mention of UFC or boxers in your elite athlete list yet you mention a bunch of steroid filled, bloated qu ## r boys. Are you serious!? This has to be some serious trolling going on here …

Talking of distance running though, I watched a YouTube video not long ago, they were pulling a treadmill around NY City trying to get people to run at the same pace as the Boston Marathon winner. The upshot was, he ran the 26.2 miles at an average of something like 12mph or just above.

That’s absolutely mental. Get yourself on a treadmill near you and try to run at anything close to that for more than a few minutes … it’s mind bloggling.

Lastly I can’t accept cyclists in any world sport list, they are all EPO’d up to the gills …

  26. Guns of Hackney

    Leeds

Thanks. Mina. I thought he looked really good. Great on the ball, scores goals and looked really composed. I liked him. The stand out in that dire Columbia team.

Dare I say it but he reminded me of Rijkaard.

  27. WengerEagle

    Goh

Hahaha yeah can’t see Perez being thrilled to have to arm himself with a brolly everytime he wants a word with his new Ronaldo in ‘Arry boy.

Wonder if they would make it mandatory in his contract that he either just communicated via sign language or must be armed with a spit bucket at all times and maintain a 5 foot distance.

  28. Marko

Hackney is absolutely taking the piss that’s what he does. Get insomnia back on here and with him and Hackney you’d have no reason to go to the movies anymore. It’d be comedic gold round here

  29. gonsterous

actually 100m for a 2 year return is not bad. given today’s market we have to splash min 50 m for a decent talent.

  30. Guns of Hackney

    TBM

Of course it was a joke…

As for the cyclists, yes they are almost certainly doped, however…you still have to churn those pedals at altitude up really, really steep mountains.

A bit like your treadmill story…have you ever seen a pro cyclist go up hill? TV actually doesn’t do it justice. 15mph uphill or around 20kph. Let’s just say that’s the average for most okay cyclists on the flat. It’s honestly mind bending when you see it live.

  31. Leedsgunner

“Wonder if they would make it mandatory in his contract that he either just communicated via sign language or must be armed with a spit bucket at all times and maintain a 5 foot distance.”

Maybe this is the real reason Arsenal let him go?. 😉

Very very funny. Hats off to you WE.

  32. Leedsgunner

Triathletes have to be up there surely…

Heard a funny story about one family I know bumping into Alistair Brownlee (a Leeds lad) who stopped to have a chat with them as they have a lovely picnic on the Yorkshire Moors. After a few minutes, he said he had to go because he was in a race and he didn’t want the rest of pack to get too close… lol.

  33. gonsterous

psg don’t look so stupid for paying 200m for neymar, now do they ? if RM wants him, they will have to pay a lot of money…

  34. Guns of Hackney

I was back when it was first on but I tried watching it again and just couldn’t.

I love Gervais and Merchant but the office was actually a total rip off from a little skit in a show called The Day Today. Do you know that one? Chris Morris and Armando Innanuci. The precursor to that “mockumentary” formular.

I forgot. Yep. Ironman. 26 Miles run. 100 mile cycle and 2.5 mile swim…in the same day. Forget about it. Footballers? Pah!

Have a look at the marathon de sables. Killer. Literally.

  36. gonsterous

I’m more surprised cyclists knees don’t go bad later on in their career. I used to cycle a lot and play football when I was younger And both my knees are busted…

  37. Guns of Hackney

    Gon

I think they have a lot of issues with back problems. I guess the technique and gearing helps prevent too much damage.

I’ve dislocated my knee twice. Ironically I actually got away without any ligament damage but my cartilage is destroyed. I can’t run for any period of time without my knee sounding like a cement mixer. Now I just ride but I really miss running.

Neymar does seem a Madrid player, has that whole commercial, asset type thing to him. You can just see it.

That is going to be about £300 Million, surely?

They will likely want to buy a ST as well so surely they will have to do some selling? Vazquez, Kovacic, Benzema, Bale etc.

  39. Cesc Appeal

Chelsea were looking at Bailey earlier in the summer, £60-70 Million was the suggested price, few other clubs were as well but all the rumours around him seem to have subsided a fair bit?

  40. raptora

I have a friend who’s a serious RM fan. He is laughing his ass every time people ask him if he rates Benzema. Guy has 5 goals in 32 games in La Liga this season, 25 as a starter. That’s some seriously bad stat.
