Torreira makes tackle with head + Spurs fans feel season ticket price burn

England’s route to the final is certainly looking… you know… not the hardest?

Can we say it?

Is football… coming… home?

Who knows, Colombia are monsters and the karma gods were drawing pictures in my dreams of David Ospina saving 3 penalties in a shootout moment of glory last night. I think we have a very stern test against a very unpredictable team there. Croatia, despite playing pretty poorly last night still look the favourites from our side. A team choked full of quality that you’d have to imagine would make our midfield look a touch pedestrian.

Scanning around the matches that excited Arsenal fans, we were not all transfixed on the number 14 during the Uraguay game? Lucas Torreira, what a player. The guy held his position, he ran for days and he put his head on the line to make a tackle on the floor. We’ve needed that sort of die-for-the-cause mentality for many a moon, and we’ve been crying out for a DM who actually wants to play there. I am very excited about the move, though I’ll always have that dull feeling in the pit of my stomach that worries we’re going to fuck it up royally at the last minute. Still, his dad seems confident he’ll at least end up in London.

“As soon as the World Cup ends, Lucas will go to London for his medical.”

There hasn’t been much movement on the transfer front, though I do suspect now we’ve hit July 1st we’ll some names roll in. The Sokratis deal has been taking a while, I can only assume that because of the July 1st date. No idea what that means in football terms. Is it the fiscal year in football? Is it something to do with a clause? I have no idea. Just stop pestering me about it.

There are strong rumours that Arsenal are being linked to Pavon for £26m. The Boca winger is going to land a move to Europe this summer, just can’t see that being Arsenal. Not often we raid directly from South American, but I’d welcome someone of his talent. He has some of that immense power Sanchez has boasted and he’d certainly ramp up the South American vibes in the dressing room.

Finally, great to read that Spurs fans are feeling the full force of a club that is now charging some of the most expensive season tickets in the world

Dg50d1TWAAE54tB

Shite seats up with the gods for a whopping £2200… they’ve even had the cheek to charge a £2.25 transaction fee.

Welcome to the new world Spurs, wait until your excellent manager leaves and you start dropping down the table breaking even every year.

Right, short post today. Good luck Mexico today!

Maddison is class. Technically he’s on an other level to almost everyone in the championship.

Reminds me a bit of Daniel Crowley.

  2. Guns of Hackney

I’m pretty convinced that England will choke tonight. The expectation will be way too much for those little darlings this evening and I see a cheeky 2-0 for the cocaine kings.

    Neymar is an absolute cunt.

  3. Elmo

    Pierre and Carts

Looks like Maddison is a young player worth watching out for next season, then. Big jump from the Championship, though; Knockaert went from Player of the Year (15 goals, 9 assists) to limited effectiveness in the PL (3 goals, 1 assist).

  4. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal have recruited since January four mature players who were or are aged 30+ or very close to that age.

In other words they have invested in experience and presumably maturity rather than players who will improve and provide genuine uplift in performance.

Whilst players like Banega and N’Zonzi may be talented players I would be personally concerned if we are bringing in even more players aged 29-30
and spending not inconsiderable transfer fees.

Arsenal should now be looking for a reasonable level of experience and upgrade potential then we should be recruiting players in 23-26 age group. That
will of course cost more money.

I appreciate that the club needs to find short term solutions to close the gap
on the five clubs ranked above us last season, but this should not mean spending not inconsiderable transfer fees on the project, which are not recoverable.

Choke? Colombia should be favored as far as I know.

  6. China

Tits 02 probably was the best but my favorite was 06. A squad rammed with legends and some hype as fuck newer talent like pre meltdown Adriano. Jizz worthy squad

  7. gambon

Surprised Chambers has signed a new deal.

    Does this mean:

    1- Soyuncu deal is off
    2- Mustafi will be sold

I cant see us going into next season with 6 CBs, although possibly Holding & Mavropanos may be sold.

  8. gonsterous

banega and nzonzi, just go for who is cheaper. But I like the plan from the club so far. we have more time to sell dross as the selling window only closes at the end of August. Anyone wanna bet wenger is going to use the transfer window as an excuse why he didn’t win the league. Some thing along the lines of “this new transfer rule is a big advantage to the current managers “

  9. Marko

Probably means Mustafi is sold. I’d imagine it’s a HG quota thing because no way should Chambers be a first choice starter for our club. What I don’t get though is why a new contract so soon after he signed the last one

  10. gambon

    Sorry

Holding & Mavropanos may be loaned.

Having thought about it, I really dont see how we sign Soyuncu now.

That would mean 4 CBs between 20-23 years old.

  11. Marko

Definitely at least one more CB will be coming in. As of right now we only have Sokratis as a starting CB. Chambers isn’t good enough to start, Holding isn’t and will probably get a loan, Mavropanos isn’t and will probably get a loan, Koscielny is done and Mustafi is likely to be sold to make some money for the players that are coming.

  12. TitsMcGee

Some thing along the lines of “this new transfer rule is a big advantage to the current managers “

    lol

    Who would really be surprised?

  13. raptora

Martinez is a wanker. So close to being humiliated by Japan NT. Superb players but the most important person in a football team – the manager, is shite. Sad for Japan but anyways the winner was always going to lose in the next round vs Brazil.

  14. Freddie Ljungberg

Could be that we sell Mustafi and tough it out with the youngsters for 4 months until Kos is back and then splash the cash on a world class CB next summer.

Not ideal maybe but we have so many positions to fill and we can’t do all of them on the cheap. At least not if we want to get back to the top.

If it allows us to get another CM and winger this window I’m all for it.

Linked to Rabiot again today, along with Thauvin.

Thauvin scored a lot of goals last season for Marseille but is he ready to come back to the PL? Anyone been watching him extensively, Karim?

  15. Vintage Gun

Thauvin’s biggest issue has always been his attitude and application as his ability is without question. Ala Nasri

    I’d pass personally

  16. Carts

I can’t see us loaning out both Holding and Mavro’. One goes one stays.

As that will leave us with on 2 fit CBs in Sokratis and Chambers, on the basis that Kos is out till December/Jan and Mustafi fate is as good as sealed.

  17. Cesc Appeal

    Pierre

He would not even cost £40 Million, his release clause is £35 Million but because he has handed in a transfer request and is doing everything to leave it may be that Sevilla accept £22 Million for him.

£48 Million to completely change our midfield by adding Torreira and N’Zonzi would be great business I think considering United spent that on Fred basically.

We would be a winger away from a great summer.

  18. raptora

It’s either Caglar/someonenew or Mustafi is what it looks like. If we sell Mustafi but not get anyone else and start the season with Sokratis, Chambers, Mavropanos, Holding we will get in the deep turd. No way that any of those, bar Sorkaris, is a decent first eleven player at the moment. Chambers and Holding at any moment. If the new team of directors is planning to put all their eggs in one basket aka one of the young CBs playing like a decent class defender, they should be prepared for the nightmare that they are going to witness. Regarding Chambers if he starts most of our games until Christmas, we will be out of the fight for top 4 right there.

  19. champagne charlie

    Emirates

Not sure your aversion to footballers 29+, majority of the games elite players are in that neighbourhood. Arsenal are buying what Arsenal lack, and that’s precisely what we need to do to begin an upward curve.

The 3 year deals for such players give the club adequate time to identify talents the other end of the spectrum and recruit accordingly. We have a number of sub 25 year olds still needing coached/nurtured, so yes please to the 29/30 year old players who are coming with the ability to perform now.

  20. Cesc Appeal

There may be a change of tact with the CB.

Instead of spending £35 Million on Soyuncu it may be we look at another bargain buy at CB with a more experienced player coming in.

That means Sokratis, experienced CB, Chambers, Mavropanos as our options next season until Kozz comes back from injury and plays out his contract.

That also means we will likely put the money we were going to spend on Soyuncu into something else.

  21. Cesc Appeal

In terms of the age thing as well, Maitland Niles is 20, Torreira is 22, Xhaka is 25 and Ramsey is 26.

If you added N’Zonzi who is 29 the age distribution is midfield is actually pretty balanced.

In terms of defence Sokratis is 30, Chambers is 23, Holding is 22 and Mavropanos is 20.

I would actually say there we need some more age in defence.

  22. Rambo Ramsey

Why do we need another midfielder when Elneny, Xhaka, Ramsey(assuming) have all signed long term contracts? Stupid waste of resources.

Really should be looking at defense. We are going into the season with 2 senior CBs, TWO. Error-prone Mustafi and a newcomer Sokratis. Koscielny is the new Cazorla, forget him, he’s finished.

  23. Marko

Still links to Meyer as well. Hypothetically speaking if we did end up getting Nzonzi on top of Torreira and then Meyer one would beg the question why even offer Ramsey a new deal

  24. champagne charlie

    Cesc

I noted that a couple of weeks back.

With Mustafi being sold and Caglar bought for example we’d be looking at having Sokratis as our only senior CB until Jan at the earliest.

I mean heaved forbid he doesn’t adjust, or gets a knock – we’d be playing half the season with a central defence you’d find in the U23’s. Seems an unnecessary risk, and before folk jump on Mustafi’s back it’s worth noting this season is a different system/manager and personally I’d back him to be of more use than any of the youngsters for a whole half season.

  25. Rambo Ramsey

“Hypothetically speaking if we did end up getting Nzonzi on top of Torreira and then Meyer”

    Arsenal isn’t a warehouse mate.

  26. Marko

Why do we need another midfielder when Elneny, Xhaka, Ramsey(assuming) have all signed long term contracts? Stupid waste of resources.

Well Elneny is basically around to play in the games we don’t want to risk a starter on he’s not going to be involved much in the starting 11 and say Emery decides to play three in midfield plus with Ramsey’s questionable fitness and Xhaka’s questionable consistency this midfield needs more than Torreira

  27. champagne charlie

“Why do we need another midfielder when Elneny, Xhaka, Ramsey(assuming) have all signed long term contracts? Stupid waste of resources”

Answered your own question by assuming firstly. Then secondly, Ramsey isn’t a CM so I’m sure many would agree that buying N’zonzi so Rambo isn’t playing one of two CM’s is a good thing and not a waste of resources.

  28. Skinnywill

Can’t see that Nzonzi adds anything to the first team other than as a squad player, I wouldn’t rate him any higher than Jack Wilshere. I understand he is experienced but I would rather see us add some real quality even if we have to wait a year to get it.

  29. Marko

    Arsenal isn’t a warehouse mate.

Elneny, Xhaka, Jack, Wilshere, AMN, Ramsey. A warehouse of sorts. You know the kind of warehouse you leave all your shit in and forget to go back for

  30. Marko

Then secondly, Ramsey isn’t a CM so I’m sure many would agree that buying N’zonzi so Rambo isn’t playing one of two CM’s is a good thing and not a waste of resources.

    This is very true

  31. Tomtom

I’m Irish but I’d like to see England win tonight.
The bad feeling between the Irish and the English seems to be in the past now so it’s time to support the neighbours.

  32. raptora

I mean we did say goodbye to Santi and Per both would be 34 before Christmas. Kos will be 33 in couple of months as well and he is as done as the other 2.

Imo just buy quality and forget about age. Juve have done well by getting old top quality players to get a couple or three seasons left in them.
Especially CB and GK is a position where experience is as important as your skills. You see Dembele’s, Mbappe’s, Messi’s and so on, Lozano and Rashford and the rest, young attackers making a name for themselves, but it’s almost never the case with GKs and CBs. For a good reason that is.

    #needexperienceback

  33. Cesc Appeal

    Champagne

The links to Benatia might be telling in that regard a bargain experienced CB, although there are rumours he might sign a new contract at Juventus now.

We need some more experience, I always thought Soyuncu would be coming in and Chambers would be going. Chambers sticking around changes things.

    Marko

Meyer is apparently asking for ridiculous wages which is putting off a lot of clubs including us.

I’d really like to see N’Zonzi arrive, Emery may be able to get more out of Xhaka in an actual system with Torreira used to cover the ground in midfield, but I really think that a N’Zonzi, Torreira, Ramsey midfield could be something special. Very solid.

  34. Marko

before folk jump on Mustafi’s back it’s worth noting this season is a different system/manager

Had this last summer with the back 3/5 and how this new system was going to work out and players like Mustafi would thrive and he personally was awful for the most part last season. It’s all well and good blaming Wenger for tactics and systems and all that but Mustafi as an individual was poor and error prone last season and showed he couldn’t be trusted. You can think or hope that things might end up being different under a new manager but he still ends up being a bit of a risk and Emery can’t really take risks. I’d be shocked if he stayed not just because he wanted to leave last summer and not least because he’s actually not good enough but we’re running out of players we can actually sell and get decent money for. I count Mustafi and Welbeck as the potentially likely outs big enough to offset our spending this summer.

  35. champagne charlie

    Cesc

Totally agree, would like to see Benatia to be honest even though I personally think Mustafi is plenty capable of being a good CB for us under Emery.

I too rate Nzonzi, and he would bring a number of qualities missing in our CM. I’m excited by Torreira, but I think some people are getting a bit carried away with what he’s necessarily going to produce next season. He’s 22, and coming from Sampdoria/Serie A to Arsenal/Prem.

That’s a fucking move an a half, I’d give him a season to get his feet wet before writing him up as a nailed on improvement in the starting XI. Bonues if he comes and hits the ground running, but it’s a bit ‘eggs in the one basket’ if we’re expecting Torreira to come in and be Kante II.

  36. champagne charlie

“he still ends up being a bit of a risk and Emery can’t really take risks”

As opposed to the guarantee a defender from another country brings? You can’t tout Mustafi as a risk and ignore the fact every new purchase brings a risk themselves. I think Mustafi can produce under Emery, particularly in a diligent system. 3-5-2 on paper did suit us last season, but as ever Wenger totally ignored how to prepare without the ball.

Emery won’t do that, which is an enormous difference. CB’s under Wenger have been totally exposed for a number of years, I still value a 26 year old German international who has previous seasons in La Liga, over a 22 year old Turkish lad from Freiburg who looks the part. That’s me being pragmatic.

  37. Cesc Appeal

    Champagne

    I agree on Torreira.

But I think his attitude is the same as Sanchez when he arrived and so I’m not worried. Whether he finds it tough which may well happen you just now he will get his head down and stuck in, sometimes literally, and that will mean he gets through the tough times and the fans will love him.

The pace of the EPL will no doubt catch him out in the possession side of his game you would think, but in terms of the off the ball side of his game his style seems suited to the EPL in that he just wants to tear around his area of the field and get stuck in.

I think he will be a firm fan favourite.

I also like Sokratis as well, I think that is a smart signing at £17 Million.

I don’t know a lot about Leno but I trust Mislintat, though I’ve seen some complaints about him the general consensus seems to be a good GK with room to grow so at £22 Million, again, another good signing.

A CB and a winger and we’ve had a complete summer, add another CDM or CM and we’ve had a great summer.

Feeling very optimistic about everything Arsenal right now, stark contrast to this time last year.

  38. Marko

We need some more experience, I always thought Soyuncu would be coming in and Chambers would be going. Chambers sticking around changes things.

Everyone agrees that a club needs at least 4 possibly 5 CB’s for a whole season. 2 starters 2 back ups maybe one if there’s an injury or if we decide to go with 3 at the back. Koscielny is finished he doesn’t come into thinking until the second half of the season where we can register him or decide to do whatever with him. Right now for certain we’ll have Sokratis and Chambers as part of the season with possible loans for Holding or Mavropanos and Mustafi possibly going. So the idea for me that next season we could have Sokratis and Caglar Soyuncu and Benatia and Chambers with Holding on loan and Mavropanos staying isn’t beyond the realm of possibility. And then in January if we decide to go with Koscielny for the second half of the season we think about loaning Mavropanos

  39. raptora

Xhaka would be a great player for Leicester. Let him rocket the ball forward so that Vardy and co can run after it. At Arsenal where we are mostly the attacking side and there isn’t really that much space to run at or play counter attacking style, he just doesn’t make sense as you are either getting a quarterback or a real defensively oriented player. As everyone has seen Xhaka is everything else but the full package, so he doesn’t really make sense.

His presence in the team might make logic if we had 2 speed demon wingers on both flanks of the pitch. Instead we have Ozil, Welbeck and Iwobi.

  40. Guns of Hackney

Why is no one concerned about our rapidly aging squad? Seriously. If this goes wrong (not qing for the CL) we will have a really old squad if we carry on with our hiring policy. 34, 30, 29, 30…not to mention the ones we do have on the 29 mark.

I totally get the experience side of it but holy moly, if there isn’t a pay off with qualification or a big trophy…where does that put us for the future?

Don’t get me wrong, I think Emery seems to be doing good business and if we get this U R Gay player, we look really strong. And for £22m…an absolute steal. We’d make £40m on him in a couple of years.

I’m just bothered that the over 29 policy is very short term and a roll of the dice.

  41. champagne charlie

    Cesc

I agree, and he’ll certainly adapt to many aspects quicker than others. I just think it’s worth noting the jump up in club stature and pressure, as well as the increased intensity/quality of every league match. He’ll have some teething to go through is all I’m saying, so I can understand fully if we are looking at another CM purchase who has been there and done it.

  42. Marko

As opposed to the guarantee a defender from another country brings? You can’t tout Mustafi as a risk and ignore the fact every new purchase brings a risk themselves

Someone like Benatia or David Luiz would be more likely to perform than Mustafi at this point imo. A new player coming in is a risk but one that could work out like most risks. Mustafi has been here two years and is more of a risk than a new signing.

I still value a 26 year old German international who has previous seasons in La Liga, over a 22 year old Turkish lad from Freiburg who looks the part. That’s me being pragmatic.

I’m not talking about Mustafi compared to Soyuncu I’m talking about him compared to someone like Benatia or David Luiz or who knows who. I don’t think Soyuncu comes in as a guaranteed starter he’s 22 with about 29 appearences for Friedburg ffs. Obviously Sven sees potential in him

  43. Marc

So far the new management setup has delivered, my view is sit back, trust them and look forward to the new season.

Let them do what needs to be done / what we can get done in a single summer and then see the shackles come off next summer.

  44. Cesc Appeal

    GoH

Torreira is 22, Soyuncu is 22, Vazquez is 27, Martins is 23, Pavon is 22.

We are looking at younger players as well, still apparently interested in Meyer as well who is 22.

I think the plan is, listening to what Gazidis said about Emery and the young players and our changes to the youth system and bringing in a director of youth programmes, that our young talent is going to come from the academy in the future and not be bought in so that when the current lot of almost 30 CBs, CDMs, CMs and attackers are finished we will have blooded some youngsters from the academy with a game here or there.

That’s the plan anyway. Have to see how it actually works.

  45. Cesc Appeal

    Champagne

There is an argument certainly that he made find himself physically struggling by the second half of the season, that’s where Maitland Niles might get some more games and players like Elneny will have to prove their worth as squad rotation players.

But the links to N’Zonzi just won’t go away, also strong links to Banega and Meyer so it seems the club wants another midfield player.

I’m all for it, I’ve hated our midfield for years.

  46. Park Chu-young's left testicle

    GoH

If we get two seasons out of Sokratis than that, for me, is a good deal. It gives two years for the likes of Mavropanos and Holding to step up.

Hopefully the youth set up will start producing the goods.

  47. Cesc Appeal

    Marc

    I agree.

This summer is the sensible add what we need summer.

Next summer if we’re back in the UCL will be the big buys summer not only because of UCL money, new commercial money and improved standing, but because this summer now will mean the squad has basically everything it needs. It would then be a case of what do we want.

  48. HighburyLegend

Germany has decided to keep Low as their manager…
OMG, it’s to late to warn them, they have been wengerized!!

  49. Dream10

    Champagne Charlie

Im worried that Monreal will experience a Koscielny like regression next year. Not feeling good about Kolasinac getting more starts in the PL next year. Assuming he starts at LB in a back four, he’ll be the worst player in our XI most weeks. His offensive contribution doesn’t compensate for his lack of recovery speed. Desperately hope we sign a fast LB

  50. champagne charlie

    Guns

We don’t have an old squad, and the players we are bringing in this summer are for a large part replacing the outgoing experience lost in Per and Santi. Jack too is 26 and is being replaced by a 22 year old. Leno (26) is replacing a 34 year old.

    Our defenders: 32,32, 30, 26, 25, 23, 22, 22, 20
    Our midfielders: 29, 29, 27, 25, 25, 22, 20
    Strikers: 29, 27, 27

  51. China

Our entire mf/attacknoutside of laca and auba has been dismal for years

Ramsey is pretty good on balance but he’s nothing special yet is our star man. That’s a highly worrisome situation frankly.

Hopefully Torreira can allow us to forget about the DM role and totally shift our attention to other weaknesses

God knows we haven’t had a young and quality DM for yonks, literally

  52. Marko

Might as well. Not like it’s meant anything to the club for years I mean Jack’s been number 10. Be interesting to see who gets captain. Haven’t had a decent captain since Vieira

  53. China

The last time we had a quality young DM was Alex song in his breakout season before he thought he was a b2b bad boi

That single season where he just sat deep he was quality. Then he got wengerised into thinking that wasn’t expressive enough he it turned into that weird season where he totally forgot about defending so that he could burst forward and ping (some frankly beautiful) lofted through balls to rvp

That year was so frustrating. Even when rvp would bring them down, bang them in and win us the game I was shouting why the fuck is song in that position????

  54. Marko

Nah Flamini in his first stint was our best DM since Gilberto and Petit/Edu. Post invincibles our best midfield was Fab and Flam with Rosicky and Hleb either side. Ever since then it’s been a slow decline with the likes of Denilson and Song making a 100+ appearences for us and then the midfield now is it’s worse it’s been. Sorry Denilson made 96 appearences for us. Still only 30

  55. Marko

Captain Xhaka, though it’ll most likely be Rambo if he signs

So still treating the arm band with contempt. No way Ramsey should get it because he doesn’t lead by example and gets injured too much and the less said about Xhaka getting it the better

  56. raptora

Rambo is probably the only player in the team that manages to keep the same intensity and not down tools when things are not going well. Also, not a bottler by any means. Scored on big occasions and in cup finals.
Some might argue that he is the most natural leader of this team as of now.

  57. champagne charlie

    Marko

Why not offer up a suggestion instead of abstract commentary on others?

What should a captain bring to the table, and who best suits it on the current team…

  58. Marko

Rambo is probably the only player in the team that manages to keep the same intensity and not down tools …not a bottler by any means. Scored on big occasions and in cup finals.

I have seen him in games do fuck all for about 70-80 mins be lucky to not be substituted (thanks Arsene) and then score a goal in the last 10 mins like he’s been great all game. He like so many of our midfielders he deceptive. A natural born leader? Give me a break. So many times last season in a midfield two he completely disregarded his defensive duties. Not a leader no

  59. raptora

Eff my life. Seems that Arturo Vidal is on the market and our absolute top specialists are doing what exactly? Give me the mothereffin Chilean por favor. Midfield of him and Torreira will be what dreams are made of. Even Xhaka might work next to a pitbull of this proportion.

  60. Marko

Why not offer up a suggestion instead of abstract commentary on others? What should a captain bring to the table, and who best suits it on the current team…

Good question. Should be a guaranteed starter who’s consistent and shows leadership on the pitch. They’ll probably do something like make it Koscielny and when he doesn’t play give it to Cech and when he doesn’t play maybe give it to Lichtsteiner something stupid like. I’d give it to Monreal or maybe one of the new boys. Sokratis? Nzonzi? Wouldn’t give it to Ramsey because he’s not a leader and wouldn’t give it to Xhaka because he doesn’t set an example or hasn’t the past two years

  61. raptora

    Marko,
Guy has the inner gift to make the deadliest of runs. Tbh if you think that he much of a nothing player, you should ask Tite and Valverde why do they play Paulinho. Same player pretty much. Same strengths and problems. Starting 11 in both Barcelona and Brazil. Playing for real teams, with real setup and working strategy though. Only difference.

  62. Marko

Guy has the inner gift to make the deadliest of runs.

That means he should be captain?

Tbh if you think that he much of a nothing player, you should ask Tite and Valverde why do they play Paulinho. Same player pretty much

First things first one at least Paulinho is disciplined in his runs which is probably why he doesn’t score that many all season and secondly it’s debatable whether or not he should start over Fernandinho or Fred and he doesn’t start over Rakitic for the most part at Barcelona. Also worth noting that in Busquets and Casemiro he had two of the best DM’s in world football protecting the back 4 while he made the occasional run Ramsey doesn’t have that in Xhaka and he should have known better. Especially when he played in a midfield two

Knock Xhaka all you like, but he’s 25, is made of kevlar, has been noted as an important member of the team, and has leadership qualities. You scoff, but he was captain of his former side, and regularly dons the armband when Lichtsteiner isn’t on the field for Switzerland.

He’s a clear candidate imo. Ramsey is more the poster boy, but I’m not that keen on part-time players being captains frankly, and Rambo never seems to say a greta deal on the pitch or show much more than a big grin when he scores. Bit more reserved than Xhaka, and I think it’s good to have a bit of showmanship in a captain.

  64. Park Chu-young's left testicle

    Sokratis for captain.

    ☑️ Defender
    ☑️ Experience
    ☑️ Leader
☑️ Not from the old guard

  65. Ishola70

Paulinho has been good defensively this world cup not just Casemiro.

Would be difficult to see Ramsey put in the defensive plays that Paulinho has made in this World Cup.

He just doesn’t have the all round attributes of Paulinho.

  66. Dream10

Regarding the captaincy, I expect Emery to take the safe route and go by seniority . Cech, Monreal and Ramsey in that order.

  67. Marko

Knock Xhaka all you like, but he’s 25, is made of kevlar, has been noted as an important member of the team, and has leadership qualities

What leadership qualities are that? Honestly

but he was captain of his former side, and regularly dons the armband when Lichtsteiner isn’t on the field for Switzerland.

Not a great feat Gladbach are a small club and I seem to remember that he was given the arm band when 2 or 3 players were out with injury or suspension.

  68. Rambo Ramsey

    Ozil for Captain.

Maybe tying that burden will force a different on-field persona out of him.

    Imagine the story… Ozil reborn

  69. Marko

Mhiki for captain maybe. Seems a bit leader like and is the Albanian captain I think. Would prefer a midfielder or defender though

  70. KAY Boss

Reading certain comment give m the impression that some posters can never see any good in what we have. That’s fairly OK. For crying out loud we can’t Ricard an entire team (22 including the bench players) and go for a whole new squad. Each player needs an opportunity with the new system before he can be allowed to leave. All thing being equal, very soon, Arsenal will be the best or among the best.

  71. Nw9 gooner

Mario you say Ramsey scores in the last ten minutes – is it not what leadership is about- trying till the end. If he stays he is the best leader

  72. Chika

I’d certainly be happy with vastly experienced players like Nzonzi and Benatia. We definitely need players that are more likely to perform right now!

  73. Cesc Appeal

With the links to Banega, N’Zonzi, Gomes, Meyer etc it does seem like we are going to see another CDM or CM along with Torreira.

Interesting as does this mean a change of shape, someone being dropped or someone being sold?

  74. Marko

Mario you say Ramsey scores in the last ten minutes – is it not what leadership is about- trying till the end. If he stays he is the best leader

Wouldn’t you prefer to give it to someone who shows leadership all game rather than the in patches. Again I’ve seen him play poorly for the vast majority of a game and he might pop up with an assist or a goal or a Hollywood flick at the end and that shouldn’t disregard the previous 70/80 minutes where he was ineffectual. It’s not acceptable for Ozil it shouldn’t be for Ramsey. Ozil gets away with it because he’s not a CM Ramsey is apparently.

  75. gambon

Fact is we really dont have anyone with the necessary attributes to be a natural captain.

Forget all this “lead by example” bollocks, a captain should be there to ensure standards, effort and attitude are always correct within the team and squad. Human nature is to often be lazy and try to cut corners, you can see that all day every day in the real world.

Xhaka isnt the man to do that. He shouldnt even be in the first XI.

After costing 9 goals between then for mistakes that lead to goals, Xhaka and Cech should not get a look in ever again.

  76. Redtruth

It’s derisory suggesting Xhaka should be captain, especially as he’s yet to show any signs of actually knowing how to play the game. i.e…reading the game….

  77. Cesc Appeal

Ramsey is about the closet thing we have to a captain at the moment.

Ozil for captain? Now I really have heard everything

  78. gonsterous

players can easily play till 33, whilst giving their all. after that it’s too much. they may not have the same value as they age but they won’t be offering anything less quality wise…

  79. Micheal

There is no outstanding candidate for captain. We need someone with drive and commitment, plus leadership on the field and someone who will play most games.

Lichtsteiner probably has best attributes but unlikely to play 30+ Prem games. Ozil ? No thanks – also doubt whether he carries enough respect in the dressing room. Monreal ? Not forceful enough character and in decline as pro. Sokratis ? Unknown quantity.

On balance, the likely choice is Ramsey.

  80. Redtruth

There’s a reason Xhaka plays for Switzerland and that’s because they’re shit.

We now know why Xhaka made it into the Bundesliga team of the year, …the league is shit with one team dominant and the National side is poor too.

  81. Chika

Monreal was recently linked with a move away, not sure Kolasinac has been assigned the number 3 jersey. Should we expect movements at LB? I doubt it though.

Possibly another CB depending on other factors, one more CM/CDM and a winger finally.

  82. raptora

Comment under the news of Ozil getting number 10, published on Arsenal’s Facebook account –

John Hoy: “8 9 10 11 it will make no difference, he will still be a lazy tosser.”

    Agreed!

  83. gonsterous

monreal should be captain. back in school our LB was the captain and we never conceded goals from his side. he didn’t offer much in attack though but was highly respected. on a side note, he was captain of the school cricket team ( he had a mean fast ball), and captain of the school swimming team ( he didn’t excel in this sport, just commanded respect, so it fell to him).
now that I think about it, my gf at the time might have had a thing for him lol

  84. gonsterous

the league is shit with one team dominant and the National side is poor too.

national side isn’t poor. the manager was poor and his team selection cost them the WC. when Is loew getting fired though ??

  85. HighburyLegend

“Ozil for captain? Now I really have heard everything”

I think Rambo was joking about that… 🙂

  86. gonsterous

kos is still in the club so I think he’s captain, anyone handed the armband will be the stand in captain..

  87. Marko

Monreal has been the only player for me who’s level didn’t drop off even during this awful two years long bad period.

  88. Leedsgunner

What about Auba as our new captain?

I’m tired of the captaincy being a token position given to injury prone sick notes like Mertesacker and Arteta.

The captaincy at our club used to mean something special… therefore it should be given to a special player… Auba is the closest thing to a WC player we have at the moment…

  89. raptora

    Leeds,
problem giving it to a striker and especially one like Auba is that he might not even touch the ball for like 10 straight minutes. You want your captain to lead the team and Auba would have to drop back in order to even get a touch which is not ideal I guess. Also a captain needs to talk to his teammates and give courage. Auba doesn’t look much of a talker or someone who can get angry and give that rage to his teammates from what I’ve seen.

  90. HighburyLegend

“What about Auba as our new captain?”
    I’m in!!

Let’s see how long it will be before the first VAR comment from Pierre.

  91. Marko

Let’s see how long it will be before the first derogatory xhaka comment

I mean just as the commentator was talking about how the Swedish players were going to target Xhaka to get him sent off he went through a swedish lad. I mean thinking like that suggests the lad does bring it onto himself sometimes

  92. Dream10

    So, we’ve bid 15m N’Zonzi.
    Sevilla asking for 40m.
It is suggested that a compromise of 25m could be reached.

Ramsey leaving or is the Torreira deal off?

  93. Chika

El Confidencial: AFTER CONCLUDING A DEAL FOR LUCAS TORREIRA, #AFC are keen on N’zonzi and have had a €15m bid turned down by Sevilla who demand the €40m release clause but could negotiate at €25m.

  94. Cesc Appeal

    Dream10

More likely this is a Sanllehi tactic of telling the player he is wanted by Emery but that Arsenal will not pay £35 Million, the transfer request goes in and Arsenal bid a low amount but are willing to pay slightly more than that amount while still getting him for far less than £35 Million.

It is more likely that any potential deal for Banega now will not happen and the two midfield additions will be Torreira and N’Zonzi which I will be very happy with.

Absolutely what we need and the new lot have done great yet again.

If you had said at the end of the season that by the start of the July we would have Lichtsteiner, Leno, Sokratis, Torreira and potentially N’Zonzi I think most every fan would be happy.

  95. Cesc Appeal

Getting seriously excited for the season now, Torreira and N’Zonzi in the midfield, great stuff.

  96. Ishola70

    Cesc Appeal
“Getting seriously excited for the season now, Torreira and N’Zonzi in the midfield, great stuff.”

Believe it when it is done.

Of course if he is signed there will be posters washing their hands of the new regime straight away. Absolutely shat on the idea of N’Zonzi as a signing.

  97. Rambo Ramsey

I can’t wrap my head around this. N’zonzi comes in and with his style of play you’d think he’s a direct replacement for Xhaka.

You reckon Xhaka will be slowly phased out to be sold next season?

  98. Ishola70

What a bad miss by Ekdal. At this level got to put those away.

Sums up the first half poor lacking in quality.
