Xhaka shows off his eagle + golden ref comment on new defender

Our two Swiss boys had a good day at the office. Xhaka banged home a screamer from range on 55 minutes to give Switzerland 3 vital points. He celebrated with an eagle sign, a big fuck you to the Serbians, FIFA no doubt going to step in to punish him because they’re super hot on anything unless it’s proper racism. A bit of gentle goading about some genocide back in the day is sure to garner a ten game ban.

Lichtsteiner played his part, barking orders from the sidelines. I found this piece from a Swedish ref Jonas Eriksson on our new signing.

‘I have met several international players and to judge a person you have to meet them several times – and not just once when they have a bad day because everyone can have it. But I have met Lichtsteiner several times, and he is one of the most unpleasant players I met.’

PERFECT. Get me some of that unpleasantness in our side. Not because I like mean players, more because we’re a soft touch with refs in general.

There are some reports that we’re chasing Russian superstar Golovin. The 22-year-old has been impressive this year; we felt his talent first hand in the Europa League. Juve are favourites, but his current employers are pushing for £25m. He looks a player, can’t believe Everton aren’t chasing him down, looks like an Usmanov centrepiece.

In coaching news, Le Grove favourite Julian Nagelsmann shocked the world when he announced he’ll be joining Redbull Leipzig next season. It’s an odd move when you consider Bayern were very interested in his talents, but from a learning perspective, it’s really smart. He’ll get to work with Ralph Rangnick, who is a bit of a management idol from a mentor perspective. He’ll also have money to support him, a smart scouting network, and he’ll be able to raise a family with his lady.

The big transfer chases going off at the moment for Arsenal centre around Soyuncu. The Freiburg centre-back is going to wait until July to decide where he goes next. Then there’s Banega, who met with Gazidis this week. The Argentine, who has been missed this World Cup seems to be playing games. He’s working out his second stint at Sevilla, and he was upset that Sporting Director Oscar Aries left the club. Seems to me like he’s either looking for more money there or more money with us. So we’ll see how this pans out.

There’s a bit of chatter about Petr Cech heading over to Napoli. I wrote yesterday that we’d pushed our wage bill up a lot so far this year. He’d be a good one to ship off the list. Who wouldn’t want to retire to Italy?

Also, I missed off Per Mertesacker and Santi Cazorla off the out list yesterday. I didn’t do it on purpose. I promise.

Finally, there’s a great write up about Raheem Sterling, by Raheem Sterling on the Players Tribune. It’s rightly being received very well because now people are looking at this guy like a human. Every year, fans of football clubs grow a little. This summer, it seems we’re not about the nasty attacks the press perpetrate on our players. They’re our boys; we’re here to the support the, and the fans will control the narrative. It’s a breath of fresh air.

Tapping out early, but tune in at 4ish tomorrow because I’ll be on Love Sport Radio chatting about our amazing summer.

‘Increasing to World Cup to 48 teams is silly talk. Who are they going to include? American Samoa, Vanuatu, Seychelles and Bhutan’

    I know yeah bloody comical.

Like who else are we going to give a chance?

    Ireland and USA?

  2. Marc

Of course I know the media are a huge part of it – it’s Harry Kane letting his photo be used on the front pages with the silly headlines.

I’ve said on here before someone needs to tell him to shut the fuck up and let the football do the talking.

  3. Marc

Problem is the way FIFA works it’s a bit like letting Turkey’s pick the Christmas menu. All the small teams are fucking yeah we’ll have a bit of that. What do you think Scotland makes of the idea?

  4. raptora

FIFA are doing their best to milk the money out of the people. More WC games, more ads, more money. Not only that but they keep making the WC in huge countries and the games of one team on both sides of the country making it so a normal fan has to spend a fortune if he wants to support his team.

2026 in USA, Mexico and Canada is showing you what to expect from this greedy organization with no limits.

  5. TheLegendaryDB10

Agreeing to that re Kane. He just can’t seem to shut the fuck up. All this bollocks by the FA standing up for him has made him believe that he can do or say whatever he wants. I’ll “respect” him in the England shirt but as soon as he is back in a Spud shirt I’ll ignore the twat as much as I can.

  6. WengerEagle

    I’m with you.

You already have cannon fodder like Panama and Saudi Arabia in thr tournament who are no hopers and weak sides in Tunisia, Costa Rica, Iran with just the 32 sides.

The real problem is that teams in Oceania, Asia and Concacaf being so weak though. Ridiculous in a way how Panama can qualify while Chile miss out.

  7. Marc

I think the 2026 will become the common way with a group of countries hosting it.

I like part of the idea but as you say it all falls apart with too much profiteering.

  8. Marc

Italy and Holland have missed out from Europe.

I don’t care how badly they are performing at the moment they’d be a mile better than this shower and ultimately it would make for a better match.

  9. Marc

It’s not only that but when he says something really stupid and is attacked he then plays the “Bamford” card (TM pending!).

Sensible decision by Southgate to rest a couple of players.

  10. WengerEagle

Even without their golden generation I find it hard to believe that Ivory Coast or Cameroon could be anywhere near as bad as some of the teams we have seen.

Chile, Ecuador, Italy, Netherlands, Wales, Turkey, Bosnia, Ukraine, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, Algeria.

  11. TheLegendaryDB10

I have noticed that the players England shirt does not have the star to highlight that we have won the WC before. I wonder if this is Southgate’s attempt to avoid having too much pressure put on the players. … Funnily enough the star is on the replica shirts though.

  12. Dissenter

    Wenger EAAGLE
“Really hope that Ronaldo or Costa win the Golden Boot. Nobody from this group deserves it.

You reasoning is very flawed though
It’s not like Miroslav Klose or Ranaldo’s goals were all agains top teams.
    A goal is a goal… is a goal.

  13. TheLegendaryDB10

Agree. I have always enjoyed watching Cameroon. Always played some good football in WCs!!

On another note who remembers that amazing save by Higuita of Colombia against us in a friendly in 1995. That’s the kind of stuff I miss watching these days!

  14. Dissenter

    Wenger eagle
may point is that elite strikers feast on the carcss of crap teams…like Panama.
You can’t blame Harry Kane for his good fortune of having a deflection he knew nothing about result in a goal. The lad just has the unteachable goal scoring essence.

  15. Elmo

Oleg Salenko won the Golden Boot at USA 94 (tied with the amazing Stoichkov) having scored 5 goals in one group stage match against Cameroon, plus one pen in another group match. The only player to win the Golden Boot getting relegated in the groups.

I was at the old Wembley for that Colombia friendly with the Higuita scorpion. Was a school kid! Good times.

  16. WengerEagle

I know just saying I would rather Ronaldo or Costa win it because scoring a hat rick vs Spain/brace vs Portugal deserves to be remembered more than a hat rick including 2 penalties vs Panama.

Long way to go still, all depends on how far the teams go of course which is why I’d actually give Costa a great chance.

  17. Dissenter

    Yeah. I recall Oleg Salenko
We all know that was a fluke at the time. It was never going to be recreated.
Hard Kane is in the first World Cup of probably 3-4 of his career [barring injuries] . It’s inconceivable that he won’t score more in the future.
He’s not Ronaldo or Messi but he knows his to score goals.

  18. WengerEagle

Euro 2012 was the worst, didn’t Fernando Torres win the Golden Boot scoring just 3 goals, coming on and scoring and assisting the 3rd and 4th against Italy?

After barely featuring and scoring a brace against us in the groups (Ireland) who were probably the worst team in the competition.

  19. TheLegendaryDB10

Lucky You! I still remember watching thus on TV as a kid and I was just dumbfounded by this absolutely crazy save!

I really hate watching us play crap football when we know that the win is in the bag. Another 2-3 goals would have showed us that there is some steel in this team.

  20. Victorious

I see Harry F**king Kane padding his goal record with fluke goals against the worst team at the world cup again.such a fraud

Panama has no business coming to this world cup, sunday league standard,England won’t go past the second round and I hope MUSA or Cr7 wins the golden boot.

  21. Marko

Yeah generally speaking 5 goals usually wins it. Been a while since Klose and fat Ronaldo were putting up 7 goals in a tournament

  22. Dissenter

    Wenger Eagle
Yes, it does come down to fair play…probably during that same game. The team that gets the most yellow cards in the game will be second if they draw.

  23. qna

“GD same and goals scored same, would it go down to fair play?”

It’s going to be a cracking game to see who can get the least yellow cards.

  24. WengerEagle

Did Klose ever put up 7 goals?

Thought he was a consistency machine, 4-5 every World Cup barring his last one.

This could be the highest GB winner for a while, 5-6 is normally enough but Beavis already sits on 5 and Lukaku and Ronaldo have 4 with a group game left.

Could well be 7 or 8.

  25. Dissenter

This England team needs a big draw in the second round to gain full confidence. It they beat a reasonable good team that could catapult them into another level.

  26. steve

Ronaldo scored in every round of the 2002 World Cup including a brace in the Final vs Germany. How can you say he didn’t earn that golden boot?

He didn’t score against England in the quarters.

  27. Elmo

“Lol qna or a contest to get the most if finishing 2nd is advantageous which is certainly could prove to be.”

Exactly. It will be clear where Brazil and Germany have finished by the time of England v Belgium. If Colombia look like they’re going to finish 2nd or not progress at all, it will be a battle to get as many of your non-first team players booked so you can finish 2nd!

  28. DaleDaGooner

Harry Kane padding his goals with penalty spot kicks and deflections……Can’t stand Kane, Lingard.

  29. WengerEagle

Haha Elmo the buck toothed nerd will methodically plan out a game plan where each player gets subbed off as they are yellow carded to avoid missing the last 16, he’ll play the reserve GK who gets himself sent off in a stalemate only for Belgium to pull a mic drop William Gallas in the 90th minute OG.

  30. Marko

Not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things but Xhaka and Shaqiri might end up regretting that goal celebration. Dumb as hell if you end up getting banned for two games and Switzerland get knocked out

  31. Victorious

Not sure why FIFA would ban players making signs about symbols of their country of birth, serb should worry more about that distinctly lack of quality on the field and not off it

Neymar made a more worringly disgusting gesture again Costa Rica and that not surprisingly seems to have been swept under the carpet

  32. Marko

Not sure why FIFA would ban players making signs about symbols of their country of birth, serb should worry more about that distinctly lack of quality on the field and not off it

One thing isn’t connected to the other. It’s a political gesture that incites the fans and apparently it comes with a minimum two game ban and a fine.

    What did Neymar do?

  33. Frost

“Why is Musa acquiring meme status.

Is it because Musa sounds a bit like Messi?”

Nigerians are just all over the internet with this tbh… & If you think this is bad, just wait till they beat Argentina. Do-able too.

  34. Elmo

Haha! If the draw really does open up like that then I could genuinely see that happening!

Imagine having the prospect of knock-out rounds against Japan then Mexico to reach a WC SF. It would be worth bringing the game into disrepute.

  35. Cesc Appeal

How can you use Kane and fraud in the same sentence?

He is a great ST, forget that he plays for Spurs.

  36. Cesc Appeal

Ozil asking for the No.10 shirt, I would ask him to show me video proof that he plays for Arsenal.

  37. WengerEagle

Don’t see it happening though, Mexico will have enough to at least secure a point and likely avoid Brazil in last 16.

Although they did have a pretty amazing H2H record against Brazil.

  38. Graham62

    Why is Kane a fraud?

I hate Spurs as much as anyone else but to call him a fraud is rather immature.

Now a real fraud is someone who pretends to put the club first but basically hasn’t got a clue.

    Ring any bells for you?

  39. TheLegendaryDB10

    James Wood

What is not to please. The boys are doing their best and we have a manager who has his feet firmly on the ground. He knows what he wants. I don’t see the team win the WC unlike the relentless pressure by the media for them to do so.

  40. Sanmi

Wait till you see England against a proper team. They nearly fucked up against Tunisia. To assume they can beat a team like Senegal is erroneous

  41. steve

“I see Harry F**king Kane padding his goal record with fluke goals against the worst team at the world cup again.such a fraud”

I see that twat Vicuntious embarrassing himself as again.

  42. Victorious

    go easy tiger

I admit calling Kane a ‘fraud’ might be a stretch but you’ve called your nemesis worst names on here so having your panties in a twist just because Kane is ridiculed is ironically stupid

  43. Marc

Phil Neville is a cunt. Talking about how Panama were despicable in the first half, – kicking, fouling etc etc – what the fuck did ManU do against Reyes? Something he recently boasted about being an acceptable tactic in a recent interview.

  44. Marko

Diallo replacing Sokratis at Dortmund. Don’t mind that I’d be more gutted if they snapped up Pavard tbh

  45. Sanmi

    And so they qualify!
They have amazing athleticism. Which is exactly what England has. Zero technicality

  46. Dissenter

This is the most even game in the WC so far.
Two teams going at it. I wont be surprised if Japan get a goal to make it 2-2
    Great game for the neutral.

  47. Akilan

People bitching about Nigerians being all over the internet should thank Indians are shite at football. You have no idea how nice we Indians can be on the internet. YOU HAVEN’T GOT A CLUE.

  48. TheLegendaryDB10

Currently listening to Queen live gig in 1986 at Wembley. What a legend of a musician Freddie Mercury was!

Japan vs Senegal is really a high tempo game! Not sure who I want to win as they are both putting a huge performance!!!

  49. steve

Vicuntious have the same mentally as that deluded cunt Ty. He’s basically a little child. Every player playing for Arsenal is automatically the best player in his position just because they play for Arsenal while other players are frauds if they play for certain clubs. Embarrassing and childish to say the least.

  50. TheLegendaryDB10

You can speak considering the number of times you swear against some posters on this blog.

  51. Pierre

VAR has been a massive success..

We are now getting correct decisions…
Imagine how many pens Leicester would have had against them when they won the league.. They would have probably been relegated… At least 2 a game

Come August it’s back to the same old shit from the refs in the prem, letting defenders get away with murder, dodgy offside decisions…can anyone find a logical reason why the pmgol would not want var as it is a tool to help them get all decisions correct.

  52. Graham62

You show your immaturity even more by hitting back with your “touch you back” remarks.

The only reason you are calling Kane a “fraud” is because he plays for Spuds.

    Pretty stupid don’t you think.

No doubt you’d be calling Victor Moses a fraud if he was playing for England, but because he plays for Nigeria, he’s a hero.

That’s the sort of mindset you associate with a minor.

I do agree with you on one thing though, the Japan/Senegal game was entertaining.

  53. Pierre

” Vicuntious have the same mentally as that deluded cunt Ty. He’s basically a little child. Every player playing for Arsenal is automatically the best player in his position just because they play for Arsenal while other players are frauds if they play for certain clubs. Embarrassing and childish to say the least.”

Steve.. do you seriously think that the above comment by you is not” embarrassing and childish to say the least “….

  54. Graham62

You just can’t get over Leicester winning the EPL.

Do you seriously think that any other team, other than LC, deserved to win the league that season?

VAR/No VAR, they were by far the best team.

    It’s what football needed.

    Get over it.

  55. Elmo

I do agree that it’s a bit depressing that come August we’ll be back to the absolutely obvious refereeing blunders not being reversed (e.g Neymar’s dive the other day), but I can understand why the league were cautious after some of the shambolic application of VAR in this country last season. It’s a shame more time wasn’t taken adequately prepping the refs before its use in the FA Cup, and forethought put into how to communicate what was going on to the crowd.

Ospina is down and looks seriously injured.

  56. steve

Nope but your pathetic “if we had VAR Arsenal would’ve won the league” comment the other day definitely was.

  57. Marc

I believe that the PL club vote on VAR had to be unanimous and was voted 18 for 2 against. The clubs who voted against were Chelsea and ManU, probably the 2 clubs who if officiated properly would have the most to lose.

  58. Cesc Appeal

What do people think of Golovin in terms of his ability to thrive in the EPL? Lots of links that we’re looking at him for around £26 Million.

Would people prefer Golovin or Banega?

At least the midfield is getting a good looking at this summer.

  59. TheLegendaryDB10

I would prefer Golovin considering that, at his age, he should have a higher ceiling of progression compared to Banega. Yes Banega is experienced, but nothing says that Golovin can’t learn from Unai (learning from a manager, would you believe it!!!) and become even better!!!!

  60. Cesc Appeal

There are some people saying we’re looking at all three of Golovin, Banega and Torreira with a view to signing all of them, not just Torreira and one other which would be interesting and welcome.

But if it is a choice I do think I lean toward Golovin as well, just not sure how he will get on in the EPL?

  61. Marc

Do you think the Golovin rumours are true? Does this mean Ramsey’s off?

I took the Banega rumours as either click bait or filling out the squad but we can’t afford to do that with £20 million 29 year old players who from what I’ve picked up (cant’ say I know much about him at all) sounds very much a competent but journeyman type player.

  62. Cesc Appeal

I don’t know, there does seem to be a lot of noise about us really looking at a lot of midfield options.

I think if Banega can be bought in for the £9 Million people are talking about it might be done, we seemed to be looking at Golovin before Emery as well and he has started the World Cup well so there’s no reason we wouldn’t be looking at him and at £26 Million he could be a risk with massive payoff.

The chances at that at 29 and moving to a big club Banega would not be totally unhappy with a fair amount of bench time and being brought in as another leader on the training ground and on the pitch? I don’t know.

If there is a chance of Kovacic I think that is who we should be throwing everything at, even if that means losing Ramsey as much as I would want to see him under a new manager.

All that would leave is the winger we badly need and the club have had a great summer.

  63. Radio Raheem

Colombia finally playing to their potential. They’ve got to qualify from that group. Japan and Senegal are worse teams.

Cuadrado has always had it all but good decision making and end-product.

  64. Henry Root

At least Harry Kane takes a much better penalty than Messi!
Why don’t English people just chill out and enjoy the summer. We won’t win the World Cup but at least we’ve put up a reasonable show so far. I can understand anti- English comments from non- English people but there is so much anger. Panama were crap, get over it!

  65. TR7

I think or at least I hope Banega rumor is lazy journalism. I don’t think he improves us.

Golovin is a good player but for the money being touted for his signing,we can do better.

  66. McBright is Wright

    cesc appeal
are you making laugh so loud, people around me think am mad…very funny comment about needing a video proof Ozil plays for Arsenal…

  67. Cesc Appeal

    Henry Root

That is what I think, England seem to be the only nation that are not allowed to enjoy a victory.

We’re a good team, not a great team, interesting at best. We’re not going to win the World Cup a quarter final would be great. We played well today and won well so we can enjoy it.

  68. WengerEagle

Golovin over Banega because he’s much younger therefore more potential to hit ceiling than Banega is currently at.

Kovacic is another level up though for me, sky’s the limit for that lad with a team built around him.

  69. DaleDaGooner

“Harry Kane bagged a hat trick “ jeeezz a couple of spot kicks and a deflection he had no clue about, calm down journalists and commentators!

  70. Elmo

Just looked up that PL VAR vote.

    As per The Guardian:
“A decision to defer implementation of the controversial video assistant referee technology was passed by a two-thirds majority at a meeting of the 20 Premier League clubs on Friday. Such an outcome had been expected after widespread criticism.”

So >2/3rds of the PL clubs actively voted for it to be delayed. With La Liga adopting VAR this season, the only major European league not using it will be the PL; it also won’t be used in the CL / EL.
