Diamond Eyes close to landing DM and GK, but who is he selling?

Good things come to those who wait, and f*ck me Arsenal fans, we’ve waited a long time for a good summer.

It hasn’t landed yet, but it feels like we’re making progress early in the window and it’s looking very exciting.

David Ornstein can usually afford to go on holiday for most oftransfer window when it comes to Arsenal, but he’s already out there tweeting that we’re in for Lucas Torreira and a goalkeeper. The good money is going on Bernd Leno to fill that position. That’ll mean we’ll have taken two targets from under the nose of Napoli.

The keeper is a very important signing. 2013-14, Leno saved 5 of 8 penalties, so that’s good news. He has sharp reactions, he makes some pretty spectacular saves, and through some extensive research I’ve been doing this week, he looks like he has a good range of passing. I’ve watched him take the ball around strikers, I’ve seen him dink chips over the press and he’s super fast at making decisions.

Petr Cech has been a great servant to the club, but we picked him up after his peak. The goalkeeping game has moved on and successful clubs need to have a keeper who is good with the ball at their feet. We don’t have to play sweeper keeper, but the advantage of having another outlet at the back is immense. How many times have we watched Arsenal concede possession because the only option for Cech is a monster hoof up the pitch?

There’s some scepticism around Leno, Bundesliga pundit Fjortoft had this to say.

“Bernd Leno to Arsenal seems to be just around the corner.

“Was a great talented keeper. It’s fair to say he hasn’t “taken the next step”.

“But a move to England can be good for him.”

I’m not sure we’re in the money leagues to compete for the best in the game. I’d love us to bring in Atleti’s Jan Oblak or Allison from Roma. Reality is, those names demand Champions League money, and sadly, we don’t have that this season. If we do sign Leno, we’re taking a punt on potential that sounds a little like it’s stalled.

On the midfielder role,Torreira is EXACTLY the sort of player Wenger used to pick up back in the day. On the way to being elite… a touch like the time we signed Freddie Ljungberg before he blew up. We’re signing the future of defensive midfield. Remember the days when Arsenal fans were telling everyone that the defensive midfield role didn’t really exist? Muppets. I’m glad we’re solving a problem we’ve had for years, with the right tool. We’ve been so bad at defensive midfielders. Denilson, Flamini, Alex Song to name a few. We signed Xhaka thinking he was box to box, then when Wenger realised he had the pace of a mobility scooter, he jammed him in the deep-lying role despite him having no defensive attributes.

I mean, there really are questions over what the club do with Xhaka. I’m not sure there’s much hope for him. In an Arsenal team that’ll be all about pressing and tactical discipline, I’m unsure how he’ll feet, especially if we sign Torreira. Hopefully, he’ll have a good World Cup, maybe there’s a path back to Germany for him. This is another great thing about the new regime, if something isn’t working on the pitch, we’ll just move the player on. One of the worst parts of the backend of Wenger’s tenure was his inability to own up to a mistake and make a tough decision.

Xhaka has been one of the worst signings of the last 10 years. He’s offered up almost nothing in midfield, and I’ve never seen a player make so many mistakes, so consistently. Give me Torreira, with cover from AMN and I’d be more than happy with that moving forward. Our midfield needs to be based on high energy, fast, powerful player. They obviously need to be technical, but one of the key things our starting 11 has lacked is power. That looks like it’s about to change.

Arsenal are doing a lot of work to bring players in, I’m very interested to see who leaves to balance the books? Ospina? Cech? What happens to Welbeck if he won’t sign? Do we keep Lacazette? Are the club keen on the bloated squad? This is going to be a very disruptive summer. Plenty more to come, and maybe even a shock to the fans at some point.

Some additional backroom news, Freddie Ljungberg is BACK at the club, managing the under 23 team. If you remember correctly, he took an ill-fated job with Joncker at Wolfsburg. He’s now back where he belongs. Good luck to him, it’s truly special to have so many explayers making their way back to Arsenal!

Finally, jump on our podcast. A few people have told me the volume is too low. That’s a power play. To make you concentrate super hard. I have rectified the issue though. So feel free to have another go. Next time, we’ll record it louder.

That Griezmann announcement may actually unleash some bad spirits in the French camp.
If Griezmann is bound for Barca, then Dembele’s place is going to be in peril.

  2. HighburyLegend

    “Now be quiet”
    lol

    “there’s only 1 match in today. ”
Yep, and that will be pretty boring.

  3. Samesong

    WE

I’m going against the grain and think there will be at least 3 goals scored today. But still end up a borefest.

  4. Bamford10

I like Martial but I doubt very seriously United would sell to us. I’d also be surprised if we spend 35m or more on a wide player this summer, although I guess we were in for Martins before he was a free, so maybe.

Further, count me in as one of those who is a little skeptical of Leno. He looks like he makes some very good saves at times, but he doesn’t look especially commanding, mature or leaderly, which are things I think we want in a GK. He could maybe grow into that, I guess. I don’t know, though; is he even better than Ospina? Hard to say. For me GKs are the hardest players to assess unless you have watched them game in game out, many times over.

  5. WengerEagle

    Samesong

Could well be both defences are dirt.

Think Kokorin is out for the Russians though so not seeing where the goals are going to come from, maybe Dzagoev.

  6. Bamford10

Despite the two teams being pretty uninspiring today, I actually think it will be an interesting match. Totally different countries and cultures, obviously, and I see that Russian CAM helping Russia to put two or three by Saudi Arabia.

  7. Leedsgunner

    Lol, lmao.

Just saw the fixtures list. What a start. Who pushed the button on the fixtures computer? Wenger? Lol indeed. 😉

Let’s look at the bright side, with Emery in charge at least we have the chance of getting something out of those games. With Wenger in charge we would have come out of those games without anything. Without last minute panic buys to fall back on , Wenger would be in proverbial and the pressure for him to go would have been tremendous from the very beginning of the season.

When questioned about the poor start Wenger would do his usual inane smile, give his excuses and say the world cup was the reason for the bad start even though our representation at the world cup is not any worse than any of the big teams.

To be honest, I would rather have it this way, it should knock any sense of complacency in the team.

If Emery manages to pull out two wins, by hook or by crook it will get the fanbase right behind him and allow him to build up a good head of steam before we face Liverpool in November and Tottenham and Man United (also back to back) in December.

  8. Leedsgunner

If we manage to pick up Gelson Martins on a free I would love the club to have the courage to go also for Dembele as well — if Griezemann announces he’s going to Barca of course!

  9. Vintage Gun

“VintageThis is how it works. It’s a blog so I’ll speak whenever I want!”

Ok. You said “Martial not coming to Arsenal end of.” as if there’s no way that Arsenal could attain Martial this window as if you have the final say on the matter and your words are law. Hence the “stan” comment.

You then go on to talk about “Someone’s been playing FIFA 18 Ulitmate team this morning” as if it’s impossible to raise at least half of the funds to supplement this deal by selling Welbeck and Perez.
But at no time did i say this was going to happen.

So as i said. Show me where i said we’re going to get him.

    If you can’t be quiet.

  10. HighburyLegend

“Petr Cech has been a great servant to the club, but we picked him up after his peak. ”

Another way to see things : chelsea gave him to us after his peak.
    (lol)

  11. gonsterous

martial coming to arsenal is as likely as bale coming here.. not going to happen, not in this window anyway….

  12. WengerEagle

Lacazette for Gimenez swap would be a serious deal.

Think Chelsea/Juventus are sniffing all over Savic though which would result in much more playing time for Gimenez.

  14. Vintage Gun

“If Martial wants out of Man United I can see him going to At. Madrid to replace Griezemann.”

Good shout. They’ve just signed Lemar so he’ll have a fellow country man to settle in with.

Other than that i can see him at Bayern (if Lewandowski leaves) Cheski, Spurs, Juve,Maybe Madrid or Us.

  15. HighburyLegend

    “The Decision.”

He made a video… who do he think he is, LeBron James ?? lol
    Ridiculous…

  16. WengerEagle

    Marko

He’s inconsistent and hasn’t improved since he was a teen/early 20s but on his day that cat can absolutely ball.

Him and Golovin are the only two even remotely exciting players to watch for Russia.

  17. TonyD

    Graham
You’re right I shouldn’t talk about health and personal things.

Incidentally how’s the hip replacement? Was funny reading about your wife’s keepy uppies.

Point taken, though, even if Charlie likes to let everyone know he’s sitting on the balcony of his Thailand hotel supping a beer.

Anyway, no offense taken nor meant offered above.

It was never my intention to be patronizing to other posters and, if seen or perceived that way, then my apologies to you and others.

As I said before enjoy the WC .

    Charlie
I’ll stick to what I’m doing , thanks, which oddly enough a Dr. of Sports Science friend here also agrees and advised.

  18. Elmo

So Lemar has gone to Atletico for £52m. How does that make our £92m bid at 4PM on deadline day last summer look?!

So happy the disorganised, scatter gun madness appears to be over with the appointment of the new management.

  19. Samesong

Ok. You said “Martial not coming to Arsenal end of.” as if there’s no way that Arsenal could attain Martial this window as if you have the final say on the matter and your words are law. Hence the “stan” comment.

My words are not law but lets see if he comes to Arsenal this coming season then?
Lets see also see whether the board will be in tune with your selling of Welbeck and Perez to finance half the deal for Martial.

That’s what you meant selling a couple of players to the possibility of purchasing Martial or you wouldn’t have mentioned it?

I don’t see it happening personally IMO. Why are you going to even talk about finacing half deals if you didn’t want the sid player to come to Arsenal?

  20. Nw9 gooner

B10 agreed, don’t think we will spend big on a winger- about Leno we have to wait and form an opinion-like Gambon said very difficult to judge a GK

  21. gambon

So glad half our fanbase dont run the club with their pathetic “we dont stand a chance with Martial” bullshit.

Imagine Man City had the same attitude back in the day.

They wouldve signed Darren Bent instead of Aguero, Kevin Mirralas instead of Silva, and The Wealdstone Raider instead of Yaya Toure.

Big Raul Sanllehi signed Suarez & Neymar for £70-75m each, we didnt bring him in to get a freebie for Yacine fucking Adli over the line.

  22. Champagne charlie

“Point taken, though, even if Charlie likes to let everyone know he’s sitting on the balcony of his Thailand hotel supping a beer.“

Bit confused aren’t you? You’re the embarrassing Thai dwelling oversharer here…

Unless there’s another Tony with a Thai bride, successful companies, massive home gym, 10-12% body fat, 15 inch biceps, and abs at 63.

I’d give you a grand if you could even come up with my profession you whopper.

  23. Champagne charlie

20 mil bid for David Luis knocked back apparently.

Take him all day, absolutely the profile of player we could do with at Cb.

  24. Carts

“Take him all day, absolutely the profile of player we could do with at Cb.”

For £20m, I guess you can’t go wrong.

I wonder whether he’s the alternative to Soyuncu? otherwise, Sokratis, Luiz and Soyuncu is definitely overkill unless we’re selling Mustafi, Chamber and Kos

  25. Champagne charlie

    Carts

Kos is a goner next summer I think.

I look at it along the lines of
    – Sokratis for Per
    – Caglar for Chambers
    – Luiz for Mustafi were it to happen

  26. Vintage Gun

    @samesong

I said I would do that. Key word being “I” as in if I was in charge. Why is that so hard to comprehend?

“My words are not law but lets see if he comes to Arsenal this coming season then?
Lets see also see whether the board will be in tune with your selling of Welbeck and Perez to finance half the deal for Martial.”

When did i say this was going to happen?

“That’s what you meant selling a couple of players to the possibility of purchasing Martial or you wouldn’t have mentioned it?”

I agree. I do want him at Arsenal.

But when did i say it was going to happen?

  27. Receding Hairline

Always had this weird feeling Luiz was going to end up with us

Well lets see how it goes. If Chelsea stupidly let Matic join United we might have a chance of getting Luiz. That is if the rumor aren’t just rumors

  28. Samesong

    Vintage

Your kinda getting boring. I don’t really care for your line of questioning. I in my opinion don’t see Arsenal buying Martial not because he isn’t attainable not because he is not good enough. I just don’t see it. It’s an opinion. And thats all it was.

    Have a good day.

  29. Vintage Gun

Iv’e only offered my opinions on Martial an dhow we could perhaps part fund a move if we WERE interested in singing him.

Your He ain’t coming end of. sounds pretty definitive to me. AS if your privy to info that the regular fan isn’t.

For the record I dont think he will end up with us but it’s not IMPOSSIBLE.
    Not exactly Brighton are we?

  30. Receding Hairline

Unai Emery seems pretty upbeat with regards to the fixture list. He just replied the premier league tweet with ” Thank you so much, a really exciting start for us @ Arsenal”

The guy really seems to back himself to do a job in this League

  31. WengerEagle

    Marko

    I said exactly that yesterday.

The Barcelona merry-go-round with Neymar/Dembele/Coutinho straddled from the norm even for this new market.

Look at Man City, they are buying all their top class players for less than 50 million as are Liverpool.

  32. Champagne charlie

    Weagle

I think he’s top draw, always been a huge fan of his and I don’t think there’s many better centre halves with the ball at their feet. Hummels maybe?

Luiz would be huge for us imo, massive character, great ability, no transition being Prem and London proven, plus who in our team has the bollocks to try and snap someone like Aguero in half?

Get him and Fellaini, then pop Caglar alongside him. The fucking hair would be enough of a watch

  33. Samesong

Vintage fair enough I should of kept the end of out. But I didn’t so there you go. We all make mistakes.

  34. Champagne charlie

    ———————Leno
    Bellerin—-Luiz—-Sokratis—-Monreal
    ————Xhaka——-Torreira

That’s a hell of a foundation were they all to come off. Good mix of ability, industry, tenacity, tactical awareness, and leadership.

  35. WengerEagle

    Charlie

Pique would be up there too although he was a CF in La Masia so has a leg up in that respect haha.

Yeah with you on all that, he’s a leader and a winner which is always welcome, especially at a club like ours that currently lacks characters.

Always felt that he was made the scapegoat of the Germany mauling, while he played shit that day so did literally everyone else for Brazil and it’s not used as a stick to beat Marcelo or Fernandinho to this day.

They were also shite when Thiago Silva returned for the 3rd placed match with the Netherlands getting spanked 3-0.

  36. Marko

Kind of makes the argument of wholesale changes to the midfield a bit redundant. Here we are three possibly in three possibly outs that’s wholesale. Taking a wrecking ball to the team and I love it

  37. gambon

Erm, Think David Luiz would be a terrible signing.

Hasnt he only ever been good in a 3 man defence?

In fact, didnt Chelsea / Conte specifically buy him back because of the 3-4-3 system.

Dont like it, also dont believe it.

  38. Dissenter

    Martial is so over=rated.
He was a prospect when he came to United and hasn’t consistently shown the class that people attribute to him on legrove.
Just because he did a couple of leg-overs on his debut doesn’t mean a damn thing. I hope he goes to spuds and stinks out yet another club.

People need to understand we can’t afford to get every hot toy on the market. We don’t have those type of resources and he’s not good enough to command 50 million with one year on his contract.
What is wrong with you people?

  39. WengerEagle

    gambon

He did alright in a 4 man defence when Chelsea won the CL in 2012 with a team that had no right to beat Barcelona and Bayern.

Also did well for PSG and was great for Chelsea last season.

Not sure why he would be solid in a 3 man defence but shite in a 4 man backline anyway.

  40. Dissenter

“Besides running around like a headless chicken what is David Luiz position and speciality.”

That’s why he’s not in this Brazil squad. He’s a headless chicken with baby curls.
Every time they see him, they see 7-1
Had Thiago Silva and Neymar played that semi-final the score [or ouctome] would have been different.

  41. WengerEagle

Martial is a little overrated Dissenter I’ll give you that.

But he’s only overrated based off of his output for United on a weekly basis so far, he’s been inconsistent but the massive potential is there for everyone to see. He can easily be as good as people are projecting he will be.

Up until January he was playing as good as any wideman in the league after Hazard, Mane, Sane and Sterling.

  42. Receding Hairline

“Not sure why he would be solid in a 3 man defence but shite in a 4 man backline anyway.”

It’s one of those things people say on here to appear smart. Good in three man ..bad in a back four ..sounds crackers but somehow makes the poster appear knowledgeable

I like David Luiz..always have ..always will. He was part of the reason Conte did well in his first season, then Conte got all moody and vindictive and look at Chelsea now.

  43. WengerEagle

Lol Thiago Silva played the 3rd placed play-off defeat to the Netherlands where the muppet hooked down Robben and got sent off, giving the Netherlands a PK.

I’m sure he would have made a huge difference against Germany…

  44. Receding Hairline

“Had Thiago Silva and Neymar played that semi-final the score [or ouctome] would have been different.”

Thiago silva is easily the most overrated defender of his generation and other generations before him.

  45. gambon

    Dissenter

Martial has 9 goals, 5 assists in 1584 minutes of football.

Extrapolated out to 38 games he would have 21 goals, 11 assists in the PL.

That is beyond elite for a wide player.

Hes the same age as Leroy Sane, people seem to forget this. He is also just as good as Sane.

  46. Dissenter

    Receding
Thiago Silva was the captain of the squad
Neymar was the natural leader that the looked up to during games.
Both were missing when the faced Germany.
At the time of the semis in 2014, Thiago Silva was widely accepted as one of the top-3 central defenders in the world. I can see you don’t fancy him.

  47. TR7

Martial was reduced to a bench position upon arrival of Sanchez even though he was United’s player of the month. You do that to any young player and his confidence will go for a toss. Salah and KDB suffered under Mou, Martial is yet another top talent regressing under his neanthertal tutelage. He can explode playing for a proper attacking team.

  48. Champagne charlie

Luiz was the best defender in the league by a mile when Chelsea won it season before last.

Thinks it’s a massive stretch to try and suggest he’s only a 3 at the back player. He’s top drawer and experienced, I’d welcome that with open arms

  49. gambon

““Not sure why he would be solid in a 3 man defence but shite in a 4 man backline anyway.”

For exactly the same reason Aaron Ramsey cant play in a midfield 2, or Paul Pogba.

    Luiz is shocking.

  50. Dissenter

    gambon
‘So you think Martial is worth 50 million with one year left on his contract?
That’s very close to the going rate for Alexis last summer.

  51. WengerEagle

Bang on there, guy wins the PL nearing a record points amount and what does he do?

Blows it all up selling Costa and Matic and benches two of his back three in Luiz and Cahill for newbies, Christensen has been good but he cost them against Barcelona and Rudiger is shiteeee.

Also inexplicably benches Willian for large spells.

  52. Dissenter

    TR7
Yes, it’s all Mourhino’s fault, regarding Martial. That’s essentially your line.
He did fluff his lines when he got his chances to come in and win games.

  53. WengerEagle

‘Extrapolated out to 38 games he would have 21 goals, 11 assists in the PL.’

Much as I like Martial, you can’t do that it’s not accurate and taking in all factors of game situations such as coming on late as a sub when the game is already dead, etc.

You did this with Morata last year using his minutes to goals ratio for Real Madrid and look how that has turned out.

  54. gambon

    Dissenter

I think our current squad, plus Martial gives us enough firepower to win the PL.

Without him (or a similar level of wide player) we will not score enough goals.

When you consider Welbeck and Iwobi have been getting a lot of minutes out wide, we could improve massively by bringing someone in to that position.

  55. Champagne charlie

“For exactly the same reason Aaron Ramsey cant play in a midfield 2, or Paul Pogba.“

That isn’t a sensible comparison at all. Ramsey and Pogba don’t work in a midfield two because they go walkies and neglect defensive duties.

Luiz isn’t going to be playing one twos with Ozil if he’s asked to be in a back four. Hell of a claim that a guy who’s been successful for Chelsea, PSG and Brazil at every level of the game can only play one system.

You say some funny shit sometimes.

  56. Receding Hairline

“At the time of the semis in 2014, Thiago Silva was widely accepted as one of the top-3 central defenders in the world. I can see you don’t fancy him.”

No Dissenter, i don’t fancy him and i have watched him a few times. Never really lived up to his billing. Never really led the PSG back line when he was needed the most.

    Massively overrated player

  57. Rambo Ramsey

Luiz can make sweet short passes and hit accurate long balls. He’ll make the useless Xhaka redundant.

  58. Dissenter

    Wenger eagle
    Are you referring to Conte?
The dude was sent by Zeus to destroy Chelsea.
His bitching got rid of their successful DoF. His childish behavior pushed away their best striker. His crass behaviors sent Matic to United …on the same wages. He has reduced the club to shambles.
You know there’s trouble when mild mannered players like Hazard start taking open shots at the manager.
Conte’s is god’s gift to Chelsea. He’s calling their bluff until the end, he wont leave until they pay him off.

  59. TR7

‘He did fluff his lines when he got his chances to come in and win games.’

Happens with most young players whose place in the starting 11 is under a cloud. I do think he is not mentally very strong but in terms of raw talent he has everything. You wouldn’t take him if he were available?

  60. gambon

    WengerEagle

The tired legs thing is a non starter, complete fake news.

If there was such an effect, every team would leave their star player on the bench until 60 minutes, and it would be a wildly successful tactic.

  61. WengerEagle

Second that, Silva is the most overrated CB for a long time. He was rated as the best CB in the world for a while which he was never close to.

Never even come close to Chiellini, Godin, Pique and he’s an absolute pussy of a ‘leader’to boot.

  62. Dissenter

    Wenger Eagle
“Dissenter You are aware that Silva played against the Netherlands in the 3-0 3rd place loss?”

An utterly meaningless game with zero emotions for a Brazilian player in a home world cup. How does a Brazilian get revved up for a third place match in a world cup?
The third place means a lot for countries other than Brazil …or perhaps Germany.

Rewind the clock back to 2014 and tell me Silva was not among the best central defenders in the world at the time?

  63. Marko

Godin is apparently available for about 15-20 million. Juve apparently want him and Atletico are willing to let him go because Lucas and Gimenez are just brilliant defenders

  64. WengerEagle

    gambon

No cause it’s stat padding, the best players and decisive ones are nearly always the ones who break the deadlock, extend a lead, or equalise.

Dzeko did it for Man City later on, that fella for Reading did it a few seasons back, Javier Hernandez for United, Morata for RM, Solskjaer for United, etc.

Vardy’s 24 PL goals were made all the more impressive because nearly all of them were decisive goals and changed the outcome of the match.

Whereas you have Adebayor also scoring 24 goals in 2008 but six of those were back to back hat-ricks to 11 point Derby County in 6 and 7-0 wins.

There’s a reason that Benzema started over Morata for Real Madrid and its become very apparent to everyone now what some of us were calling last and earlier.

  65. WengerEagle

Lucas is the jewel of the crown Marko, top drawer at CB and LB.

Was blown away by his performances vs Bayern Munich in the CL SF back in 2016 and since then he’s gotten better and better.

  66. WengerEagle

    Dissenter

That’s a cop out if I have ever seen one, lol of course it was an important game arguably more at stake given how much they were humiliated in the SF and Silva played like a total clown.

And he was in the eyes of the masses but I never had him top 3 personally.

  67. gambon

    WE

Like I say, theres zero evidence for any “tired legs” effect.

Again, if there was it would be an accepted tactic to hold your best players back until 60+ minutes.

  68. Guns of Brixton

Agree Martial is on par with any top young forward in Europe.

But he wants to play CF don’t he?

And we are stuffed with CFs atm.

Would be happy to be a winger?

  69. WengerEagle

    gambon

Tell me then why didn’t all those players I listed start for their clubs?

Fergie preferred Welbeck in a season where scored TWO goals in 40 apps over Hernandez.

And Zidane didn’t entertain Morata over Benzema despite the formers amazing goals to mins ratio.

  70. gambon

And also, while we’re talking about extrapolating….

All statisticians these days use that theory.

When assessing attacking players they are looking at Non Penalty Goals Per 90, or more usually Non Penalty Goals and Assists per 90.

  71. gonsterous

So glad half our fanbase dont run the club with their pathetic “we dont stand a chance with Martial” bullshit.

we stand a chance but only by paying silly money. if he was 20-25 m. he’ll definitely cost more and weren’t you the same person saying we can’t have a 50m player on the bench ? what’s the difference here ? martial isn’t a winger, he wants to play central, like all CF’s…

This guy put 8 years of PL goals into a graph that shows a trend where goals are scored more frequently as time goes on during a game.

I have to say that gonsterous just knocked you out with that last post.
” weren’t you the same person saying we can’t have a 50m player on the bench ? what’s the difference here ? martial isn’t a winger, he wants to play central, like all CF’s…”

Why don’t we spend half that money on a proper winger who wouldn’t be another 50 million bench warmer.

no shit.. I don’t think we need a graph to tell us, there’s not going to be a lot of scoring in the first 10-20 mins, compared to the last 10-20 mins…

  75. Jim Lahey

    @gonsterous –

“no shit.. I don’t think we need a graph to tell us, there’s not going to be a lot of scoring in the first 10-20 mins, compared to the last 10-20 mins…”

    And why would that be?!

  76. WengerEagle

Teams tend to be more conservative in the opening half an hour, at least one team does if they are playing a much better side.

Whereas in the last half an hour teams are often chasing deficits so have to throw the kitchen sink and commit more men forward leaving gaps to expose and presenting more chances.

    Enter Javier Hernandez…

  77. gonsterous

    jim

    why would that be ?

well common sense, people don’t generally mind missing the first 20mins of the game, but they do get ticked off missing the last 20, cause they know there will be more goals involved. during the wenger years, I used to normally give the first half a miss…

    Cheers, l will enjoy it.

    Set up a family sweepstake.

    I came out with Peru @ 200/1.

Put a fiver on that @ local betting shop.

My son has predicted France/Brazil final.

“This guy put 8 years of PL goals into a graph that shows a trend where goals are scored more frequently as time goes on during a game.”

Ive seen a lot of these studies and its not very definitive at best.

I think its 55% of goals are scored in the second half.

    I agree with you
Peru will be the tram to shock everyone. They are very hard to beat and can pass their way out trouble.
    I would add the following:
Morocco will be another team to watch
Portugal have a good team …and no one is putting them under pressure.

  81. gambon

“Saudi Arabia gave Germany a tough time in a recent friendly
I expect them to shock Russia today.”

    Would certainly sheikh things up.

    Highbury legend
The won the final without Ronaldo and have developed a very good bunch of players over time.

WengerEagle: No cause it’s stat padding, the best players and decisive ones are nearly always the ones who break the deadlock, extend a lead, or equalise.

Great post. Now can you tell me if Lacazette is that type of player. Will he be at this level for us? I am telling you the answer is no.

    Aubamayang?

  84. Redtruth

It should be more favourable for South American teams playing in Europe than in previous World Cups. I still can’t see any of them winning it though.

  85. Receding Hairline

“Great post. Now can you tell me if Lacazette is that type of player. Will he be at this level for us? I am telling you the answer is no”

WTF is this?? Go check Lacazette’s goals for us then get back to me.

JEEZ….whenever a poster on here dislikes a player they drag him into every discussion.

Lacazette was the bonafide match winner for Lyon..their go to guy and leader before he left. Yes that same Lyon where u want us to go and empty the bank at Fekir’s feet.

U don’t like him, everyone here knows that ..but stop talking rubbish. He does not need your validation

  86. WengerEagle

    qna

Auba should start over Laca no question.

If I had it my way I would sell Lacazette and reinvest the money into buying a top drawer wideman or an up and coming one like Malcolm/Guedes.

If we’re keeping him I’d play both him and Auba against weaker teams at the Emirates and start Auba up top on his own against the top 6.

  87. qna

Receding. Did you read WengerEagles post. He was talking about the difference between very good strikers and elite strikers. There is nothing on heaven or earth that justifies Lacazette in the latter category. He hasn’t played in a big league or at a big club. He is yet to prove or disprove himself. I am calling it as I see it now. I could be proved wrong. But your hissy fit does nothing for the conversation.

clearly you have no idea what the difference between a good and elite striker is. Thats ok too.

  88. qna

WengerEagle. I would definitely sell him if we could get an elite wide man. But I wouldn’t do it for a potentially elite wide man like Martins.

As I have said, Lacazette is a perfectly good squad striker if you can afford to have one. But I wouldn’t be starting them together, home or away. Auba starts when fit and Laca comes on from the bench. Auba will not be able to handle the full work load of a season and is bound to get injured. I would be starting Laca on those occasions.

I would only sell Laca if we were talking about replacing him with a binafide quality player of equal market value. If we are talking about Martins and the like, I would be finding that by selling lesser players like Welbeck who should be sold regardless.

  89. Receding Hairline

.”He hasn’t played in a big league or at a big club. He is yet to prove or disprove himself. ”

Fabinho…Rio Ave and Monaco…You are on record as saying he is world calass and we should have gotten him ( No Big league ..No big club by your own reasoning )

Fekir..Lyon and a couple of loans to clubs i cannot pronounce….By your posts on here another world class player who has proven himself ( No big league..No big club)

Lacazette… Lyon…100 goals in 202 apps for lyon in ligue 1 alone ….14 in 32 for Arsenal in the league alone……yet to prove himself to Qna but Fabinho and Fekir have proven themselves

You sir are not worth the effort i am putting into responding to you.

  90. gonsterous

sell laca, Auba gets injured and then the same people will be shouting that the club doesn’t have a decent back up…

  91. Paulinho

Russia could’ve done with Roman Shirokov being a few years younger. He was always good for getting them going in the group stage matches.

  92. qna

Receding. Nope. Just a shit post in general.

As for Fabinho, yes he proved himself in a team that proved themselves against a mega spending PSG and in the UCL in multiple years. Lyon don’t get to claim success by association anymore than Everton can claim success because they are in the same league as City.

Fabinho I like because he is one of very few players that are available in a position that we are in desperate need for. I don’t claim Kondogbia to be world class either, but I think he would be perfect for what we need.

Strikers are a different beast that defensive midfielders. I don’t expect you to understand the value of an elite or good striker and an elite or good DM. But there is and that value is also reflected in players values in those two positions.

Lacazette has one season in the EPL and he was exactly as I predicted he would be. He scored goals, he also failed to score goals when we needed them. When our session fell apart. How many games in a row was his goal drought. It’s not just me talking about selling him. Do you really think if he was world class as you suggest that all these Arsenal fans would be talking about selling him.

  93. mysticleaves

    Receding owning qna lol.

On Luiz. Is the love in here because we are being linked with him? Luiz is awful. When a defensive coach like Jose bins you then you are awful.

  94. mysticleaves

If our team was sorted out then I would prefer Auba but in this mismatch I prefer Laca. Two excellent finishers but it’s what they do when they aren’t scoring that separates them for me.

  95. Receding Hairline

    @ Qna

Thanks for your useless long post. I appreciate you already said u do not expect me to understand it so i wont feel so bad i did not.

You are one of the worst posters on here and what makes yours more painful is you think you have an understanding of football when in truth you are just a thrill seeker.
This is me saving my time and energy skipping your mostly senseless ramblings
