Arsene Wenger: Progress destroyer

I’ve written this before, but one of my favourite lyrics is from a band called The Cribs when they teamed up with Sonic Youth.

You can change your clothes
Change your hairstyle, your friends, cities, continents
But sooner or later your own self will always catch up
Always it waits in the wings

That was Arsenal last night.

You can change your backroom staff
Change your Chief Scout, your players, your DoF
But sooner or later, you’ll play Swansea away and lose
Always, an unexpected shocker of a result waits in the wings.

I felt sorry for Arsene Wenger after the final whistle. His interview with BBC was painful to watch, he doesn’t have a clue how to stop his team losing away from home. He blamed confidence a week after we beat Chelsea at home in the league cup to head to Wembley.

As fans, we just have to accept that this is our reality for the next 16 months. Wenger has too many get-out-of-jail cards with Stan K to lose his job. He’s already blaming the Sanchez situation when the reality is he just can’t manage at elite levels anymore.

Mustafi was poor, because he’s not a great player. Bellerin doesn’t give a fuck, not because he’s poncing around thinking about LFW, but because he wants to be playing for Barcelona. Aaron Ramsey is hugely overrated, forget his xG and xA numbers, he doesn’t cut it.

Granit Xhaka has to go down as one of the worst signings of Wenger’s tenure. Forget that the manager thought he was a box-to-box, have you ever seen a player make so many cataclysmic mistakes? More to the point, have you ever seen a manager forgive a consistently bad performer so often? He has no power. He has no pace. He is the Messi of gifting goals. We should cut our losses, and put AMN in there until the end of the season. Put some power in the midfield.

Then you have Petr Cech who looks like he’s ready to tap out of life. He’s been in rapid decline since he joined us. Last nights mistake wasn’t unexpected. However, if you give him a shite keeping coach to work with, that’s what’ll happen.

The absolute worst thing about last night is this: I knew we’d do badly when I saw the rain was heavy. You can laugh at that, but you know it’s true. Our team is so incredibly weak mentally, I genuinely believe a big factor in that loss was cold weather and unfavourable conditions.

What is this Dave Priestly character doing (team head dr)? Why are our players so lacking in character when they need it? How is he still working at the club? March him out the door right now. Too many hangers-on at Arsenal not focused on delivering value or results.

Arsenal’s expensive crap shot for 4th place is over before the ink on the Aubameyang deal is try. We’re now 8 points off Liverpool having blown the chance to put pressure on them. Our 4th place attempt is over in January. It’s fu*king abysmal.

The manager should have gone 8 years ago. This decline has been painfully obvious. Yet we’re still going to allow him to preside over a 2nd season without Champions League. Quite incredible there’s an argument for anything over than a sacking right this second.

… he’s the neverending story.

Onto transfers.

  • Olivier Giroud heading to Chelsea
  • Matty Debuchy given a free transfer to St Etienne
  • Marcus MaGuane joins BARCELONA

I’m not sure what to be thinking right now. I guess, at least we’re clearing the decks for the summer, so we can bring in a whole bunch of exciting player Wenger can ruin in his last season.

Unreal.

My transfer deadline party has been totally ruined.

I don’t even care if there’s a really cool video of Auba dancing with 26 trumpet playing penguins. My appetite for great content has been spoiled.

See you in the comments. Podcast running later on this evening.

By the way, I think #AFC are still trying to get one more signing in January… if there is enough money for it. A second extra one could not be done as funds did not reach that far??
What is the second line meant to mean?

  2. Marko

They said they wanted Xhaka, they got him. They told us they wanted Gonalons, they told us Bakayoko was good, they even said they prefer Kondogbia, now they want another set of players because all these center midfielders have been failures. Who are they?

Ughe having another go at the fan base after a defeat. Very clever. You never answered the question of what managers you do rate ughe. Strange that

  3. Leedsgunner

We wanted Wenger to spend. He is. It’s completely in the wrong areas, but Wenger is spending.

Actually it might lead to his downfall.

Kronke will not take kindly to money being spend without a top 4 place to show for it. At this moment I reckon Kronke is the only friend he has at the club.

  4. HighburyLegend

Giroud is considered as a shit player by most of us, but still he’s about to wear a chelsea shirt.
I am totally lost and confused lol

But I understand why Conte wants him, because after all, he will be feeded by Hazard (among others)…

  5. Shaun

Correct red truth. Add up all the ins and outs for this and the last window along with girouds fee and we are in profit. To say there is no money available is bullshit

  6. raptora

Guillem Balague: “Ozil will not be paid more than £200k gross a week as that is their cap. A generous singing on fee will increase his income. Aubamayang came to #AFC earning only around £15k more a week than at #BVB”

  7. Elmo

Had a look at home / away tables from this year and last.

Our PPG at home is on the exact same pace as last year.
Our PPG away from home has fallen off a cliff. Last year we were the worst of the top 6 with 1.6 PPG, whereas this season we are down at 1.0 PPG.

The rate at which we concede away from home hasn’t changed much (1.5-1.6 per game), but our goals scored away from home have just disappeared. Last season we averaged two goals scored per game away from home; this season we are averaging just over one goal per game away from home.

Liverpool are conceding at the same rate as us away from home, but they’re scoring at the same rate that we did in previous years, which has given them an extra 11 points in 13 games.

We are terrible at defending; we know that, but so are the likes of Liverpool. Why have the goals scored away from home collapsed, when PPG and goals scored at home remain steady?

Obviously a key reason is losing Sanchez’s production from last year: if you look back at the away matches against ‘lesser’ teams that we lost this season, he scored in every equivalent fixture last year. He scored 15 goals away from home last year, with every single goal being against teams outside the top 6. His goals were responsible for a huge number of away points.

Compare to this year: Lacazette has scored only 2 goals away from home, with only one of them being in some way relevant to collecting points (the 3rd goal in 5-2 win at Everton). Excluding the Everton game, no attacker has scored more than one away PL goal all season other than Sanchez (3), and there is NOTHING from Welbeck, Iwobi or the midfield; the defenders are scoring all the rest. If you take away the Everton (2-5 win) and Palace (2-3 win) games, we have scored 7 goals in 11 away games!

My guess would be the club are attributing our collapse from top 4 relevance (their key goal) to this dramatic fall in away goalscoring and are desperately trying to plug the deficit by bringing in PEA. There is going to be tremendous pressure on him to replicate Sanchez’s numbers, seeing as Lacazette hasn’t been able to take over the responsibility in away games.

Obviously the elephant in the room is that we were zhite last season and finished 5th, but I’m sure the club feel if we can get back to those numbers we are ‘genuinely’ in the hunt for top 4 and that is enough for them to claim we are overperforming.

  8. Bay Area gooner

I can’t believw song is only 30. Seems like he would be older than that by now!

I say give him a shot. He is IMO better than Xhaka

He got the size and epl experience already.

Why not? Anyone at this point is bettter than granite legs

  9. TitsMcGee

Lol at anyone still arguing with Pierre, Ughelli and the other respawn.

They clearly don’t think logically and no matter what the result they will spout the same garbage.

Think of Ty when you think of them and you’ll understand.

  10. Ughelligunner

Legrove fans are wicked and mean. At first you all laughed at Arsenal for not been able to sign Sanchez to new contract, and that we sold him to a rival (whomever the rival may be, you’d still moan).

You laughed at Arsenal for signing a united reject in place of Sanchez, you were all happy he ditched Arsenal. Now you all wanted Ozil to go on a free and continue to abuse the club, now he has signed, you claim the money is too much and he doesn’t deserve it?

I guess you all thought Ozil would go to united to work with Mourinho at the end of the season and if they paid him 400k,you would all be happy he left the shit hole called Arsenal. He is now a disappointment to you Wenger obsessives because he stayed with the shit hole.

The same shit Arsenal you can’t stop talking about, the same shit club you follow their results to look for negatives, the same shit club you hope that no player would come to, the same shit clubs and players you can’t stop monitoring to see their mistakes, the same shit club you want the results to go against them and you still abuse them for making the results go against them when you predicted it.

You claim you don’t visit the club, attend matches or buy merchandise… So eventually, it isn’t any of your money the Arsenal is spending, then why cry everyday? The so called people you abuse that you call AKBs, are the ones spending their time and money and it isn’t any of yours. So let the club spend it the way they like, it isn’t like you have put your money inside it.

We know the state of the club, why don’t you chill and wait till Wenger is gone and then come back, rather than abuse the hell out of anything that comes into the club.?

You all sound like an ex who can’t stop talking about a disappointed lover. Let her go, if you claim you are done with her, rather than bleat about her to anybody that cares to listen every minute you hear about her.

  11. TitsMcGee

Ozil at 350k a week. I guess it was inevitable after Sanchez left that they were going to throw the kitchen sink at Ozil. The club couldn’t be seen to lose both Sanchez and Ozil for free. Especially after last night’s debacle.

As far as Ozil goes he must really not care anymore or he has some inkling that Wenger’s days are numbered. Can’t imagine any top player buying into Wenger at the moment unless said player is just about the money 😉

  12. TitsMcGee

I guess you all thought Ozil would go to united to work with Mourinho at the end of the season and if they paid him 400k,you would all be happy he left the shit hole called Arsenal. He is now a disappointment to you Wenger obsessives because he stayed with the shit hole”

    *cue the violins*
    *boo hoo*

  13. Do One Gambon

    Ug

    Brilliant post.

People should learn, you can want regime change, manager and at board level without wishing the club destroys itself in the process.

  14. Doublethink

Ughelli we still talk about Arsenal because if the support is genuine it’s hard just stop until a later daye yet to be confirmed. If you don’t like people criticising your Dad maybe legroves not for you. The Sanchez/Ozil situation is a shitty comparison as ones arguably worth paying 350k, the other isn’t which you can see given the reaction of most fans on here.

  15. gonsterous

get a manager who can give players specific roles and see how much our players improve. I feel wenger doesn’t know how to get the best out of his players. hence why he’s never won the CL, cause that clearly takes a tactical manager (mourinho won it with Porto, simeone went all the way to the final, Ferguson just scared his players to give their best) fair play to wenger cause he got to the final once In 20+ years…

  16. TitsMcGee

So will Aubameyang be that light at the end of the tunnel that the AKBs want him to be?

Ozil was seen as a savior when he signed. Nope.

    Same for Sanchez. Nope.

Same for Cech. (Some actually guessed he would account for a 15 point swing lol).

    Mustafi. Lol

Xhaka. (Best player in Germany we heard)

    Kolasinac (see above)

Lacazette ( “He’s efficient” was the mantra)

All of the above mentioned players were given the Stamp of Approval and according to the AKBs would change Arsenal’s fortunes. Did they? So why would Aubameyang be the secret key?

There is a very big and obvious pink elephant sitting in the room trying to not get noticed. Open your ridiculous eyes.

  17. Guns of Hackney

Just read a typical Arsenal SOB tweet.

“I don’t think I’ve ever got over a defeat this fast. Wow”

And therein lies the problem with the most pathetic and apathetic fanbase in the world.

It’s like the hangman has said “can’t fit you in today but how’s tomorrow for you”?

    AFC pathetic.

  18. Carts

Similarly to what I did back in June 2015, in the eve of Cech signing for us “good signing and the intent is evident, but I’m not sure these signing are what we require”

On paper, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang and Ozil extending looking like business well

The semblance is that we’ve turned a corner; the reality is that Arsenal have made a lateral move at best with maybe a 10-15% incline

  19. Guns of Hackney

    Carts

It’s not even lateral. Sure we lost a few shit players and gained, on paper, two better ones (Sanchez excluded).

We still have an unbalanced team, garbage players and the most heinous manager in the world.

We’re not moving anywhere while the madman is still gripping the wheel.

  20. TitsMcGee

Well now that Ozil has extended does he go back into cruise control mode? He’s been playing well this season and we’re still 6th.

Can Aubamayeng hit the ground running? Even if he does he’s like for like in terms of production with Sanchez in terms of last season .

    Mhki is a wash.

Different faces. Same outcome if you ask me. Maybe slightly better if Auba can score immediately but none of them defend either do they? 😉

  21. Victorious

‘They said they wanted Xhaka, they

    The Wenger Obsessives

  22. Guns of Hackney

No sooner had the ink dried on Ozil’s contract…he’s thinking “time to sit back and hide again”.

Remember when Walcott looked like he turned a corner? £140,000 a week later and yup…

Contracts are aphrodisiacs to our bastard players.

That really sums up the average arsenal fan. Thick as fuck. Gullible, timid and spineless. Always ready to forgive Wenger and “give him some more time”. Embarrassing.

  24. DaleDaGooner

Ughelli makes a good point about the constant moaners, we are all depressed at how the club is managed and the team is managed, but a lot of you don’t put your money into the club and definitely ain’t supporting the club, so why do you go on and on criticizing and abusing all others who still support the team (maybe not the manager)???? Auba/Mkhi signing on and Ozil extension and you still find a negative in those business??// BUT yesterday one person had the gut to mention Sanchez as some beautiful example ??? Get it together, I ask again, how do some of you manage around Man U, Chelsea, Spuds fans???? Do you clap along and chuckle with them???? Wenger needs to go no doubt, but some of you are looking very suspect parading yourselves as Arsenal fans when in fact you’re not! stop the B.S.

  25. DaleDaGooner

Wenger Out But victorious makes excellent point re:

‘They said they wanted Xhaka, they

    Very apt.

  26. DaleDaGooner

When Cheslea signed Bakayoko a lot of you were ooohing and aaahing and abusing Arsenal, Chelsea fans can’t stand the player, goes to show fans are very good with hindsight

  27. DaleDaGooner

I remember Nuri Sahin when he went to Liverpool, the abuse was unreal…he’s bombed out at Liverpool on loan and on the bench these days back at BVB

  28. Guns of Hackney

    Steve

Once again, the genuine fans who love the club and not the manager will no doubt be called “traitors”.

The damage this one, cretinous manager, has done to the club will never be fully understood.

Relegation might be the only way we rid ourselves of Wenger, the board and the vile fans that proclaim to support Arsenal.

  29. Realitybytes

I can honestly say I have not been this excited about going to a game for a long term. Saturday should be great.
I do get the feeling that watching Wenger is like watching Nero as Rome burnt down. Looks like our strategy going forward is we know we are going to leak goals – just pray we score more!
Xhaka has been a liability from day 1 – If Jack is fit for Everton will be very interesting to see what happens but suspect the clueless one will put Granite ahead of Rambo. Our front line is very much top 4 but our back line would struggle to keep us up. The fact Jonny Evans, currently at table topping WBA is touted as being an improvement says it all.

  30. Guns of Hackney

    23 points from city.
    22 points from the bottom.

Just in case anyone forgot that we are actually still playing out a league season.

Let me guess. I guess the Wenger fans will say we “won” the transfer window.

Open bus parade for that one.

  31. DaleDaGooner

When you equate support of Arsenal with getting them relegated because you think that will get the manager sacked, sad sad, What happened to just supporting the club and wanting success for it regardless of who is managing? It’s ok to want Wenger out without wanting failure for Arsenal

  32. Guns of Hackney

Wenger has just strengthened two rivals.

I’d love Giroud to be the one who scores the goals that keeps us away from fourth.

    Sanchez deserves a big club.

  33. steve

t’s ok to want Wenger out without wanting failure for Arsenal

Erm it doesn’t work like that dumbo. You can’t want the team to do well and want the manager out. The manager is part of the team Einstein. Last time I checked a manager who wins games won’t get sacked/resign.

  34. DaleDaGooner

Anyway, moving on, Wenger is upset at Monreal and Cech, he needs to be asking himself why Ramsey is tolerated in the first team at all cost, this is becoming ridiculous the Ramsey shoe -horn fisaco. He was a passenger all through the game providing no threat or any defensive cover, Xhaka is an absolute liability! I’ve watched him closely rooted everytime we concede a goal, absolute rubbish from him, and Koscielny might seriously be done, he’s a liability as well, so is Cech.

  35. Guns of Hackney

    Dale

I’ve picked a side and it doesn’t include the one Wenger is on or part of.

The club can go fuck itself.

The club will go on long after the messiah kicks the bucket. Remember that.

  36. Park Chu-young's left testicle

    DaleDaGooner

Unfortunately poor results and the possible departure of the old git are linked. He doesn’t go with average results.

  37. steve

    @Guns of Hackney

I want Sanchez to score a hattrick at Old Trafford and celebrate Adebayor style in front of the specialist in failure.

  38. DaleDaGooner

Your statment makes you an absolute fool, calling me a dumbo? Look in the mirror you absolute fool, a competent owner would sack Wenger before relegation is even an option for justification. You claim to be an Arsenal supporter and don’t mind relegation???? ABSOLUTE FOOL! Or just a spurs fan who has infiltrated Arsenal blogs for the troll. crawl away idiot to a spurs blog.

  39. Guns of Hackney

Ever seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?

That’s a day in the life of Wenger.

Human sacrifice. He takes one of his follows and eats their heart.

  40. DaleDaGooner

If the board or owner had the balls like the owners of Chelsea or Man U, they would have had enough. I don’t want my club to be relegated and want them to win no matter if a monkey was the manager. Are you so obsessed with cutting your nose to spite your face?

  41. DaleDaGooner

The decline of Arsenal is ENOUGH to have Wenger kicked off and it hasn’t happened! What makes you think relegation would????????

  42. Guns of Hackney

    And there’s it is!

Dale has called Steve a Spurs fan.

    Jesus wept.

Fuck me. Where did the real arsenal fans go? All we are left with is goons like Dale and Pierre.

Lemmings who will follow Wenger over the cliff.

  43. Elmo

Lol. Talksport rolling with “Mesut Ozil has effectively retired from top level professional football by signing a new contract at Arsenal.” Adrian Durham trolling at its finest.

  44. Carts

    GOH

Absolutely! I’ve made that distinction that we’re now morbidly top heavy. Attacking wise we look like we can do bit.

However, defensive were a fucking utter shambles. So bad and inconsistent that we concede once 3 & 4s to a shitty Swansea and Nottingham Forest but Conte can’t work out how to penetrate Past our shite back 4

  45. Carts

    Tits

I don’t trust a thing Wenger does or says. He’s devoid of strategy to make any noticeable improvements with that lot.

I’d go as far to say that where the 10-15% differential will stem from might be PEA due to Lacazette not being up to the task.

The fact we’ve neglected defensive tactics and acquisitions men’s we’ll be in for more Swansea-esque performances

  46. Pierre

    Goh
“Wenger has just strengthened two rivals.”

Giroud, with his ten prem goals a season.. Yeah right… Strengthened… Now that’s funny…

  47. Nw9 gooner

So Giroud has gone, and it seems Debuchy is going today. The bench has been discarded, now strengthen the mid-,field and a good cb in the summer maybe we can compete again
