Wenger has a serious defence issue

Wenger reads like a man on death row when he talks about losing his star players.

‘Why should I be scared?’

Last week he was saying it wasn’t really his problem.

‘From Monday he (Alexis) is free to go where he wants if it’s a foreign club — but that’s not my problem.’

Arsene is channelling his inner Katherine Tate with his ‘Am I boovered?’ stance… but just as with the insecure teenager she was parodying, we know that Wenger must be deeply worried about what’s about to come this month.

Losing Alexis and Ozil in a single month would be horrendous. Part of me wonders if the club are going to wait it out and see where we are before making a decision. If we’re well out the the top four race by the end of January, selling off your two best players to bloat the coffers makes sense. If we beat Chelsea tomorrow and ride on through with a group of victories, it might be worthwhile keeping them both.

However, the reality is the power is now mostly with the players. If both want to sit out the last 5 months because they can smell a mega payday coming, that’s what they’ll do. If an offer comes in for Alexis, it’d be very hard for Wenger to turn down anything north of £35m, especially when you consider that the majority of this season, the Chilean has been pretty woeful.

We know interest will come knocking. City are without Gabriel for at least 6 weeks with a knee injury, and we know they’re not messing around in their bid for dominance this year. Aguerro isn’t cutting the mustard either, so I’d imagine the sell to the board at City won’t be tough, especially as he’s likely the best striker in Europe not cup ties for the CL.

Still, the bigger story today is about the impending Chelsea game. It’s all looking a bit scary. Our entire back three looks likely to be out.

“At the moment our injury list is quite long. We lost Kolasinac, Koscielny in the game [at West Brom]. The two who have a little chance.

“Ozil might have a test this morning. Koscielny is 30-70 available.”

The only test Ozil is having this morning is whether he can shake off the 14 packets of Doritos he ate while he smashed through the Black Mirror boxsets.

The defence is the real worry. Outside Mustafi, it’s all looking a bit bleak. Chambers isn’t Chelsea ready.  Holding really doesn’t look like the next big thing and probably isn’t under consideration. Per might have been 2 years ago. Can he gift us another FA Cup final like performance? Or are we going to see the wheels come off a defender who really does lack top level pace these days.

We are down to the bare bones when it comes to injuries. Aaron Ramsey will be a HUGE miss against a team that’ll try and beast us. As seems to be the case every year, once you scratch beneath the surface, you see that we do lack quality. Our second stringers lost to bottom of the Bundesliga Koln, and our kids are a stunning shade of green at the moment. What a pickle Wenger is in. All his making.

I’m a bit lost as to what the team can bring 3 days after a shocking performance against WBA. The tank is running on empty, and Wenger is already wheeling out the excuses of fatigue pregame. Our boys don’t need an excuse to switch off, but Wenger has given them one already.

Buckle up. That’s the only advice I can give.

See you in the comments.

Wilshere on the other hand is a completely different type of footballer.
Clever, good technique, good football brain, rarely wastes the ball but could probably take a few more chances going forward. Maybe that will come again as he gets more games under his belt.

He had 27 games under he’s belt at Bournemouth ended up in he’s best position on the beach.lol

  2. Pierre

    Don
The last 4 years we have failed to progress even with 2 world class players in the side.
Yes, we have won trophies but if we had bought saurez instead of trying to get him on the cheap then we would have competed in the major competitions.
With cazorla sitting behind sanchez, saurez and özil we would have been unstoppable going forward, instead he persisted with giroud and it took Wenger 4 years to realise that he wasn’t the answer.

Hopefully Wilshere and özil will stay, can’t see sanchez staying but as you say he may stumble on a formula but to be honest we may as well write off the title until 2022 as that will be 18 years since our last title and history says that we won the league in 1971, 18 years after winning it in 1953, then we won It 18 years later in 89 so hopefully we get a more ambitious manager in who will build a team that can win the league in the next 4 years.
As for now, we are a decent cup side so it’s cup football for me, can still see us winning at least one trophy this season.

  3. Bamford10

A lecturer at an American university? I teach 10th and 11th grade literature and composition, guy. God, you’re fucking weird. Go away, troll.

  4. HillWood

Wenger charged by F A for misconduct
    Akpom convicted of drink driving
Not a great couple of weeks for a club with such high values

  5. Rambo Ramsey

Don, judging by the way you behave on here – your mannerisms and opinions –
clearly your teachers failed at their jobs.

So perhaps its a good thing that more qualified candidates like Bamford are taking interest in educating kids.

  6. Pierre

    RR
Just out of interest, do you think bamfords behaviour on here is a good recommendation for the education system in the USA taking into his mannerisms and opinions.
Would you want someone like him educating your child… The way I see it is, you need patience to teach and Bamford appears to be in short supply of that particular attribute.

  7. Ishola70

    Pierre:

“As for using stats for their goalscoring feats, of course the player that spends half the time in the opponents box (Ramsey) , neglecting his role in midfield, is going to have the more favourable stats..”

Not just you Pierre but others have the opinion that Ramsey himself plays this way from off his own back. His own decision. But as you keep repeating this assertion time to clear it up.

To think that Ramsey goes out and every match just absolutely ignores his managers wishes and commands and plays just for himself is not only far-fetched but ludicrous when we talk about this level of football. This isn’t U12’s football.

You ignored the real reason why Ramsey plays like he does in a previous post so just so everything is made plain Ramsey plays as he does because of Arsene Wenger. Wenger instructs and wishes and desires the way we see Ramsey play. Wenger chasing goals.

Rather than keep criticising the player himself surely you should be pointing the finger at the manager who oversees it all and wishes it this way.

  8. Pierre

    Ishola
Of course I understand what you are saying but can you give me an answer as to why Wilshere, who has replaced Ramsey, does not vacate the midfield area or do you think Wenger asks Wilshere to play a different way and if so, why.

  9. Pierre

And if he asks Wilshere to play how a midfielder should play, why doesn’t he ask Ramsey to play how a normal 2 man midfield should play.

  10. Ishola70

    Pierre:
“Of course I understand what you are saying but can you give me an answer as to why Wilshere, who has replaced Ramsey, does not vacate the midfield area or do you think Wenger asks Wilshere to play a different way and if so, why.”

Yes Wilshere has no record at all of being a player capable of hitting the back of the net on anything like a regular basis. So why would you ask a player to bomb forward every other minute if he has no real instinct for putting the ball in the net? It would be utterly self-defeating to do such a thing.

As it is with Ramsey Wenger sees it as worth the risk to keep asking him to bomb forward as Ramsey has much more the instinct to score goals in comparison to Wilshere.

The risk isn’t worth it. The midfield is unbalanced because of how Wenger uses Ramsey in the side. Wenger yet again is favouring offensive play over anything else. No surprise.

Not only that they are both different type of players. Wilshere can sit, Ramsey is not really comfortable sitting and wants to bomb forward as his manager wishes and instructs.

Any poster on here who believe that a Harvard graduate would be on her acting like Bamford10 is being fooled. We are talking about one of the top 5 University in the Country where most graduates are lawyers and doctors and is most cases are earning 3 figures. To be on a football blog justifying your educational status to people you have no chance meeting, it’s very obvious there is a problem. Secondly, leaving Harvard to teach English Language is hardly any achievement you could attend your local community college to do that. Who borrow 70 thousand a year student loan to be a teacher, you should be embarrassed. It easy to just say I have X and Y level of education to a faceless blog, but Harvard is the wrong University to lie about bro. You not even a Provost at a Community College, who makes more than any lecturer. Let’s talk Arsenal and stop lying to boost egos.

  12. ArseneisaFraud

Between having AW declare that management is a drug (which is his number 1 total BS excuse for staying so long; I am sure that for most managers the actual drug in management is to do whatever is necessary to actually win something concrete) and then to have Pierre state “As for now, we are a decent cup side so it’s cup football for me, can still see us winning at least one trophy this season” then you know it is impossible to see the club progressing towards what a big club should be aspiring to.

It seems to me that for some, short term gain is more important than the future of the club. Gooners should not be finding the current state of the club acceptable.

  13. Marko

To posters questioning Bamford’s going to Harvard you do know it’s easy enough to find out if you’re smart enough I mean. Also being a teacher is embarrassing is it?

  14. Ishola70

    Don:
“You really think the risk with Ramsey is worth it?
It’s hardly like he’s hitting the target himself on a regular basis is it?
He misses more sitters than Emile heskey used to.”

No as said on the other post not worth the risk. Wenger thinks it’s worth the risk.

But you will see when Ramsey gets back fit to play Wenger will put him back in the side and will use him yet again not really as a midfielder but as an extra forward player.

    Wenger chasing goals.

Only if it gets really bad and Wenger is dropping points left, right and centre will he think he has to abandon the way he uses Ramsey or drop him from the side entirely.

By then it’s too late and he would only drop him for a period before bringing him back into the side.

  15. Cesc Appeal

Should be an interesting game tomorrow, it is the type of result that Wenger usually gets to avoid too much pressure on him, but equally Chelsea should be up for it given that United are now in their sights.

  16. Ishola70

    Don:

“I thought Wenger doesn’t do tactics. At all. Ever.”

Exactly. Any manager with any ounce of real tactical nous doesn’t disregard his midfield in such a manner.

    Wenger does.

  17. ArseneisaFraud

    GunnerDNA

It hasn’t cost us… he’s helping the cause. Let the cunt wriggle and writhe out of that one. Do you honestly want AW to have another excuse to be a Fraud of a manager of The Arsenal?

  18. E54_

How is it, with no UCL football, and never playing full first team full strength sides in the E.L. How is it we’re struggling in the league?

Why has Ramsey struggled. He plays 1 game a week. In his preferred CM position. Why has bellerin struggled. Debuchy plays EL games. Bellerin gets to rest. Why is he struggling. Koz mert mustaphi? Why are all these individual players struggling? Are the teams above us just better. Is spurs man for man better than us? Is liverpools Defence extremely better than ours?

    What is it?

  19. Pierre

I think the last 2 televised games show how officials can influence a result of a game of football.
The WBA pen and Tottenham offside goal were easy decisions to get right.

The good thing is, it will increase the possibility of VAR being introduced into the game next season.

We all know that Arsene Wenger can infact speak 9 languages!

I’m no lip reader but there were a few expletives directed towards Mike Dean after Sundays game.

Have seen this a fair few times over the years when things go against him.
    .
Can’t say I’m feeling sorry for him. It’s an added bonus as far as I’m concerned. The pressure is starting to build and I’m sure even behind the scenes his 9th language is being put to good use.

“Alexis, why the #### do want to leave? What more do you ####### want? Why are you ######## me around like this after all I’ve ####### done for you?

Yep, the signs of pressure are starting to show.

By all means attack Bamford arguments and disagree with his statements, beliefs and views regarding Arsenal as this is a football blog.

But the other stuff about going after his personal life is creepy and disturbing.. it comes off as herd mentality just because yiuyou can’t stand the fact someone doesn’t worship lord Arsene of Arsene FC

You are so clueless, I don’t even know where to begin. One, I’m not the one who brought up where I attended university. Don did.

Two, the only reason I ever mentioned it in the past was because someone asked what level I played at, and I said that I had played Division I college soccer at Harvard. I couldn’t care less where someone went to university or whether they went to university at all. Completely meaningless to me.

Three, I did in fact attend Harvard, played there and graduated in 1998. Michael John Bamford. You can look it up, dipshit.

Four, stop saying “bro”. You’re clearly a dumb cunt, and you’re definitely not a surfer from California. You sound like some dipshit frat-boy (“Yeah, bro”).

Five, lots of people who graduate from Harvard do a great many varied things in this world — including teach secondary school. There are thousands of Harvard grads doing this very job all over the US right now, in fact. The fact that you think everyone who attends Harvard becomes a lawyer or banker or doctor or consultant — although a good many do become these things — only shows how far away you are from such a university experience and how fucking clueless you are.

Six, who said anyone had to take out loans to attend university? Why is this your assumption? You don’t know a fucking thing about me, you dumb cunt.

I mean how many more teams/projects do we need to see. Wenger has had about 3 or 4 different sets of players. Yet its the same problems. Remember denilson. Remember Rosicky. Remember eduardo, adebayor, vermaelen, fabianski.. in and on. Walcotts been here to see all these players come and go. Why buy new players. Xhaka laca mustaphi kolasinac. What difference has it made?

Agreed. These guys are weird and insist on making things about my personal or private life. They do this because they have nothing to contribute here about football or Arsenal, and they don’t have any arguments to counter anything I’ve said. So they go on and on with these creepy personal attacks.

As I said yesterday, Don is not just a BIGOT, but also quite sinister.

I have no time for Alt Right types and I’m ashamed to even think of him as an Arsenal fan given our diverse fanbase.

Actually, the rest of us discuss football and Arsenal, but you turn to personal attacks or politics whenever some disagrees with your opinions. That’s actually what goes on here.

But yes, let’s stick to football.

It has kept him in a job. We of course have to watch all that crap but he truly believes that what he offers us is entertainment (and be grateful for it). It is so entertaining that it has got some people getting at each others throats instead of focusing on the problem at hand.

I don’t know whether it’s scary or funny.

    Happy New Year guys

So West Ham could do what we couldn’t last night. Says it all really.

Been away with the family but skimmed through the posts but missed the last few games.

    Pierre
Loved the Funky Gibbon quote. Good to see your bait bucket is always full.

    Definitely a penalty, though.

    Don
Back to your Jack Russel best snapping away. Really funny reading at times.

Reasoned projections my arse. Bet it sounded good as you wrote it Donny boy, right?

Was you named after and Osmond?

Roy Keane was Vinny Jones with a sort of a football brain. Immense at breaking a Swedish(?) player’s legs and finishing his career.

Typical bully boy but met his match with Vierra., who was world class.

A typical hard man SAF loved to have in his team. Couldn’t manage to save his life, so that spoke volumes about how good he was as a tactician and getting the best from his players. A pretender to the great Bryan Robson who funnily enough also could successfully manage a club.

Probably was like McMenemy in the dressing room beating up his players as it was alleged often.

Not wold class for me – was just a modern day Norman Hunter who equally wasn’t world class and bit players legs.

Stuart Robson was a bit in the Keane vein for us.

    Liverpool
I’ve always liked Klopp, but also recognized he has his dysfunctional moments with his defense set ups. Still see him as a great manager and he’s assembling a team who could well push City next season.

Wouldn’t rule him out being successful in the Premier League with Liverpool. Time will tell.

Best PL managers for me are Pep, Poch, Klopp and Conte if he can get some money to spend.

I Like Dyche as well and Silva. Wonder what they could do with our resources?

    United
Poor Jose it’s all going wrong for him again and his whining about not having money is hilarious. Fast catching up with Wenger in the has been stakes.

Chelsea tonight can’t see anything but a loss. Do we have a defensive unit for tonight? Lets say 0:3

Wenger’s recent addiction and we’ll replace with top quality comments.
Nothing more than I’d expect from a megalomaniac floundering like a fish on dry land. The press must love him. Put a mic under his nose and he’ll ramble & ramble zzzzzzz…………..

    Midfield
Ramsey, Xhaka, Elneny and Coq not fit to wear the shirt – just not the quality for a club of our stature.

Jack? Worth keeping, but not a player who can be relied on to produce assists every game and has a serious lack of goals, which he’ll never get if he stays out of the opposing penalty box. Guess some will say it’s his positional discipline Ramsey doesn’t have.

In the Invincible days it was widely recognized that midfielder should target at least 10 goals a season as Scoles probably did. Ljungberg weighed in with 46 goals in 10 seasons.

    Sanchez & Ozil
Pretty much always said sell them in this window but really wanted them sold last summer as stated here before.

The league passed us by when we lost to Liverpool: the script was written then and we’ve lived up to it so far perfectly. So I still want them sold now and save the money for the summer when hopefully or wishfully Wenger will walk or be kicked out .

Probably won’t happen so our hopes are on the Sven & Raul show kicking in and find some gems we can afford to move forward despite Wenger.

Bottom line is with them (Sanchez & Ozil) we’re 21 points off City – our away record couldn’t be worse, so why keep them? The cups, Top 4? Who’s kidding who there?

As a caveat I’d say keep Ozil on his shop window performances this season, but to be honest I think he’d revert to type after he got the deal he’s after.

Nah thinking about it let Marty Feldman’s kid go. Who gave him that name?

    Cups
I’m only interested in challenging for top honours with the EPLor CL. My expectations are far higher than Wallace or Pierre’s. or some others here.

So not really interested because all that winning a meaningless cups will do is prolong Die Fuhrer’s reign.

I could just imagine Wenger as a French general in the 2WW.

They will never get through the Maginot line … Fcuk where did they come from?

Bit like “we will replace world class quality with like for like” Then checking what Sanogo is doing these days or saying Giroud is like a new signing when he recovers from his injury.

    Bamford
Hope the wounds are healing. I think you make a lot of sense with many of your posts. You don’t shoot from the hip and that’s fine with me.

Don’s proud of being white and maybe his GCSEs so be nice to him, bro. He’s got 2 little ones so probably isn’t getting much sleep these days or anything else (motherhood is so tiring), so maybe it’s that making him grumpy.

    Have a great 2018 everyone

Good luck with that one whoever is the manager .. You’re in for a pretty miserable 4 or 5 years as pep will have the title sewn up for the next few years.
Its nothing to do with expectations it’s about being realistic. The only teams that could push city close are the clubs that are willing to spend 3/4 hundred million at a minimum probably more. The sort of money that psg are spending at this moment in time.

I take your fair point about the rebuilding time, it’s taken Liverpool a similar to rebuild.

At least rebuilding gives us something to believe in for the future, something for us all to unite with as fans and Gooners together.

Then winning cups will mean something as we use them as stepping stones to challenge for top honours.

With Wenger we know we’ll never seriously challenge again as the past 14 years have shown us no matter how many cups we win now.

I’ll take 4 /5 years to rebuild so long as each year we get a step closer to being proud fans again as we move forward and to have something really to look forward to at the beginning of each season.

    Whitty,

Being smashed 5-0 by the Chavs would not affect Wenger leaving in any way.
No scoreline in any game or failure in a seasons long campaign would ever get him out.

This is a man who essentially compared the Arsenal job for him to being a crackhead who needs their pipe, he’s here to stay as long as he wants.

It’s funny cos someone mentioned how most fans of football clubs will put up with a year maybe two at the most of their club under performing before they do something about it but at Arsenal it’s lasted for the last 12+ years. Nothing will happen when you have so many fans happy to accept the clubs re-framing of success. I suppose if your told something so many times you are inclined to believe it.

Arsenal of yesteryear excited to win trophies, Arsene initially added style to winning trophies. 14 years later and further than ever, whilst not even genuinely attempting to win it has become about values and my new favourite

“There’s something magic in our job, which is to bring together energies for a common cause,” = which means absolutely NOTHING.

It’s now gone beyond a joke.

It is incomprehensible to me and many others on here, that you feel obliged to keep highlighting things that are so defeatist, one dimensionaL and submissive.

“It’s nothing to do with expectations it’s about being realistic” ……How ####### pathetic is that. You just accept the status quo………………How weak is that?!?

You’ve never been involved in a competitive environment in your life if you make statements like that. NO WAY WOULD YOU BE MY FIRST NAME ON THE TEAM SHEET!

Maybe you feel Nick Clegg deserved his Knighthood!

Agree, at the moment we are going in the wrong direction but unless arsenal employ a more ambitious manager and are prepared to throw a lot of money at it then it will be a very slow process.

is there any scenario where wenger can get sacked?
I don’t think there is frankly, so I would rather we win as many matches as possible from here to the end of the season.

now how can we go about winning against chelski?
    any ideas?

How many fans have you managed to recruit for your little idea on boycotting the game tonight for the first 20 mins.
At the last count it was 4, I will offer to help you as I feel a little sorry for you, must be pretty embarrassing.
Have you reached double figures yet. I have a feeling that you given up on it as you have gone very quiet on it for the last couple of weeks.

Little P with his usual pompous bait, go have a lie down with your anorak collection and dream of the carabao cup.

    1. Life is too short to be serious all the time

    2. Bamford makes it his business to be rude to “positives”. So they/ we in turn make sure he gets his fair share of stick. It’s a situation of his own making.

    3. Roy keane was world class. Absolutely no doubt about It. He was in a class of two for his era. Just him and paddy v.

    4. Ramsey has hit double figures in the league once. And that was only 10 goals.
He’s hit 6 once and 5 once. After that he hasn’t scored more than 3 league goals a season.
Now I know JW is never going to be the type to weigh in heavily with goals but let’s just dispel this myth about Ramsey. He is NOT even close to the numbers required to be considered a mid table goal scoring midfielder let alone a top level prime scholes or lamps or Stevie g or Freddie or pires.
All he offers is the odd goal and more importantly, his runs create space for others. Apart from that he is too greedy and selfish to capitalize on his better attributes.

I ask you. Who is the better midfielder? Who is the better player? And is Ramsey’s goal tally really so vital that we include him even though his lack of positional sense and responsibility leave a very shaky defense ever more exposed?

I had hoped he and jack would form a formidable partnership but they can’t. I don’t think Aaron Ramsey can actually play as a successful midfield partner for anyone in a two man midfield.

  64. Uwot?

Yep ole gunner.any thrashing of us will be met with the traditional “ it was a blip” freak accident excuse.accept we have rather a lot of car crashes under his leadership hey?

It’s exactly 1825 days since I last visited the Emirates.

Can someone tell me, are the Danish family in the upper tier North stand, still going along (5 of them with season tickets………Nice bunch).

If they are, please remind them that Arsenal are the team playing in Red!

Fair point about Ramsey I said he wasn’t good enough to wear the dirt for a club of our statute.

I said keep Wilshere but had reservations.
