Welcome to Wednesday. A pretty exciting day because it means I only have to write a short post because we’re dropping podcasts once a week. Big thanks to Alfred and Matt (Arsenal away fan for many years) for being part of the crew. Also massive shout out to The Pacers for allowing us to use their super cool track for the theme tune (more from them here).

If you are a student sound engineer and you can do a better job than me, let me know if you can help out!

Also feedback in the comments. We made it shorter this week.

P.S. No comment on Xhaka until he’s found guilty of doing something. Unfair to speculate unless it’s John Terry.

The site does emoji’s I think.

Also, I said at the start of the year I expected Klopp to collapse at some point. Man has done well with an avg squad, but as soon as the games rack up, it’s over.

  2. Leedsgunner

    Pedro

Super job on the podcast so far, I really enjoyed episode 2. I didn’t get to finish listening to the first episode can you provide the link (or the date of the blog with the link in?)

    Many thanks

  3. The Godfather

    Really Pedro????

So now it’s a congestion pile up, even though he isn’t in Europe? And now it’s his roster is bang average? Wow LMAO!!!

How does this guy get so many excuses and mulligans lol

  4. gambon

Maybe Klopp gets a break because hes only been in the job for 1 years vs Wengers 20 years.

Maybe because hes got a wage bill £40m less than Arsenal.

Maybe because hes spent £0 since he joined vs Wengers £100m.

In fact, Wenger should be embarrassed that Klopp is within 15 points of him.

  5. Leedsgunner

    gambon

    You forgot to add…

Klopp has actually got to the final of the Champions’ League in 2013 beating Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid over two legs in the semi final. When was the last time Wenger beat Maureen in a game that matters?

    Lol.

Having said, that Klopp is just a younger Wenger with only one way to play. So I don’t get the hype. He’s a decent manager to be sure but if we were given the choice I would plunk for Diego Simeone every time.

    Ps. I hate Liverpool FC.

  6. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

It surprised me pool losing ….
Thought it was a bang on united pool final ….

Papers eluding to wenger resting Sanchez who will take it bad …

    Needs to be done tho,…

Would like him to start with
    Lucas / well b / Theo / akpom

    Any 3 from 4

    Would be nice

  7. Leedsgunner

Apparently Sanchez’s going to be rested versus Soton. Personally I think this is optimistic. When Wenger’s back to the wall, Wenger will go full tilt for the FA Cup to save our season.

Call me a pessimist but the FA Cup is our best chance of silverware… Wenger knows this. This good result for the Saints will spook Wenger even more to play his strongest squad.

If I’m wrong and we win either the EPL or the Champions League I’ll be the first to say I was wrong for doubting Wenger.

  8. Dissenter

That was a highly embarrassing loss for Liverpool.
It came after the much publicized clear-all meeting between the players and Klopp.

    I’m afraid to gloat though.
Southampton have found a way to batter us at home and I fear they’ll claim two big scalps in a week.

  9. Pedro

Godfather, I’m not sure not sure why you’re so smug?

Klopp’s Liverpool beat us at the start of the season, the Southampton team who just beat them knocked us out the competition. I mean, are you really jumping for joy over a manager who took on a fucking horrible role at a club whose net spend and wage bill was way lower than ours this summer?

All you’re doing is pushing the mediocrity agenda?

I don’t even know what you’re crowing about? I mean, bar everyone enjoying a poor liverpool showing.

  10. DaleDaGooner

Lmao! Pathetic excuses all around, no objectivity! Klopp lost to an “inferior” team compared to his own team! Stop it fellas, we all think Wenger has taken the team as far as he can but STOP it! Wage bill and “horrible role ” excuse is pathetic. Liverpool have Coutinho, Firminho, Sturridge, Can, etc and they lost vs Swansea who we beat, and lost to Soton, come of it and start being objective instead of being petulant and subjective. Jose is sixth currently and Pep is doing horribly , these are expensive teams and clubs who shouldn’t by any means be where they are even if they go above us! Stop it!

  11. DaleDaGooner

Put Wenger and Arsenal in today’s Liverpool loss and a lot of posts would indicate how pathetic Wenger is, now we’re making excuses for Klopp…..lol what’s next, Jose for President

  12. DaleDaGooner

Chelsea isn’t even in the running for the EFL and they didn’t even feature in Europe! What’s their excuse for dropping out in EFL?

  13. Pierre

Pedro…….I think godfather is just doing a Joe or a Redtruth ……. He’s probably had enough of all the juvenile gloating whenever Arsenal drop points or the sanctimonious shit regarding Wenger …..

  14. DaleDaGooner

gabon stating Klopp wining league in last 13 years as if he’ll go on a league wining spree, lmao. So Wenger never won a league before? Let’s actually use coaches like Ferguson etc as the yard stick to beat Wenger, resulting to all these young Wenger-like coaches is redundant in pushing Wenger out.

  15. DaleDaGooner

Mane, Matip , Wijnaldum, Klavan, Karius etc……gabon says Klopp didn’t spend any money since he came in.

  16. Pierre

Jose, pep , klopp , pochettino and conte…… Pre season , the predictions from all the experts on here were overwhelmingly that these managers were going to put Wenger in his place …….. Not quite happening that way is it … Jose and pep , not good but are going to keep throwing money at it ……klopp , is struggling now his team are running out of steam(let’s hope there is enough left in the tank for the Chelsea game next week)….. Pochettino , embarrassingly bad in Europe , league form pretty good but now they are picking up a few injuries we will see what their squad is made of …… Conte , looking good , the team look to have a good balance and mentally strong …. Have had no injuries and only league games to worry about ….. If they get through the next 2 games v Liverpool and Arsenal unscathed , will be difficult to catch …… .. A couple of defeats got them and the whole complextion of the league changes….

  17. The Godfather

“Godfather, I’m not sure not sure why you’re so smug?Klopp’s Liverpool beat us at the start of the season, the Southampton team who just beat them knocked us out the competition. Pedro, Pedro, Pedro,

Why do you guys keep pushing this fake agenda of Klopp beat Arsenal, when they had Holding and Chambers starting the first game? It’s a dubious narrative that no one challenges.

Gimme a break. One isn’t even on the team any more and the other barely gets a kick in. Lemme see him do it vs a full Arsenal squad.

And he played Southampton twice with his full squad and got tonked by a score line that actually flattered him because in reality it should have been much worse.

My good man you are really reaching for this one ..,

  18. The Godfather

Sorry Pedro but Juergen is a Flopp and a fraud. Lemme remember here, where did he finish in a two team Bundesliga race during his last season at Dortmund? Yeah nough said …. even Spurs fans are laughing at him

  19. Pedro

Godfather, back to back Bundesliga titles in the Bundesliga, a Champions League final with a team on a tiny wage budget… two points behind Arsenal with a bog average team and a summer net spent of +17.5m (and made a Europa Cup final in his first season).

Not sure what’s fraudulent there. Arsene has won what, 4 titles in his entire career and he’s 18 seasons younger than Wenger.

You could call Klopp a one trick pony, and maybe point to the struggle he has

  20. Pedro

Also worth noting that there’s no fake agenda. Klopp beat Arsenal in the first game of the season, the one you have the most time to prepare for.

You’re starting to sound like a fantasist.

  21. Pedro

    ‘The narrative’

The narrative is what you actually see with your eyes. The actual results on the pitch.

If you think the narrative over the past 5 years, and arguably before, has been anything other than a poor one for Wenger… I’d say it’s you who’s crafting a story that makes you feel good about your Wenger Stockholm Syndrome.

  22. Pedro

Absolutely not. I want to know why our players were back later than everyone else’s and why it took us past the Liverpool game to get our shit together with our defence.

You can’t complain about not being prepared for the first game of the season, especially against an average Liverpool team.

Unless Klopp was lacking fraudulency then?

  23. The Godfather

You have your opinions and I have mine and I have seen some of the names you have touted out here and seen them all crash and burn and thank God those at the Emirates didn’t listen to you. Now while anyone can be wrong, for you and so many to continually lambast a man who has given so much to this club, which we all are supposedly fans of, is shocking to me.

There is no one out there right now that this club is assured of getting that will do a better job than Wenger. If there was I would be all for it.

Until then I will continue to support the club and manager while hoping that fan pressure, and not abuse, will keep his feet to the fire and not make him settle for anything short of contending seriously for a title

  24. Pedro

Again, little slight of the hand from you…

Please explain, ‘all crash’, and tell me how you’re tying that back to Wenger being the right choice?

… and please explain how you’ve come to your very ill-informed view that no one could do better than Wenger?

  25. The Godfather

It’s funny because you are mired in this anti-Arsene agenda that you won’t even cut him any slack yet With Klopp you have stopped short of blaming the wind and refs like he laughably did … lol

  26. Pedro

Our players came back later than every teams. Everyone else had their Euro players back for that game.

We also played an injured Ramsey, what happened there?

We have a more expensive squad, and according to you, Klopp is a fraud.

You can’t have it both ways here?

  27. raptora

Southampton are a magnificent club. I can’t even realize how are they replacing the talent they sell with more of the same, just to be sold again, and to be replaced with great talent again. Maybe tv money will pit an end to this cycle and they could actually try to hold on their stars and try to be a real factor in CL places. Who would have thought that Claude Puel will do that well.

For Pool it’s a bad, bad result and it speaks for itself that they haven’t won a single game this calendar year. I’m lazy to look for interviews of Klopp saying how happy he is with his squad, with the players he hasx the players he got in the summer, and how you don’t need to buy players to be competitive but create an atmosphere that makes strong bonds inside of the team that make you competitive or smth. Also said that he usually doesnt buy that many players in a window so probably next windows will be calmer. Kinda sounded like Wenger refusing to spend money to improve his squad. I mean so far Karius is a flop, Klavan is not good, and they had a problem with their left back that they did not fix, they just put Milner there. Mane has been great, no doubt about it, from what I’ve seen Wijnaldum isn’t upping his game so he remains a big questionmark, so far not impressed with him doe. Matip hasn’t played of late even doe ppl say he’s good. So a lot of problems at Pool without even having Europe this season. Add a possible CL and things look dire. Klopp was aware of this and still didn’t adress it. Mould of Wenger, no doubt about it.

  28. Pedro

Again, trying to get to the crux of you point… me talking about interesting managers aside. What is your point on Arsene.

You’re comparing an unsackable manager, to a group of managers who will be sacked and not afforded even one season, let along 12 to make an impact?

It’s like lauding Mugabe as a real stayer… and critiquing American’s for Obama.

‘guy had no staying power, he got fired after his second stint’

  29. raptora

Pedro, actually have to say that some ppl in here are biased towards Klopp. I mean come on – since when is not spending muvh money an excuse for a top team that Liverpool is trying to become again so you are saying like it’s some kind of heroics what Pool is doing with an “inferior” squad. You might as well excuse Wenger for the years after the Emirates move and by this logic you should. Same Klopp said he is happy with the players he has and doesn’t need to buy more just like Arsene did back then getting top 4s every season. And ppl are quoting this Wenger quotes again and again like its a proof he sux and has to be burnt alive yet Klopp is making a miracle with an “inferior” squad?! Please… It’s so completely biased not even real.

  30. The Godfather

“‘The handball was clear. Long’s was a clear handball.

‘The handball was obvious, 100 per cent obvious. No one comes down and says, ‘Sorry, I didn’t see it’.

‘Maybe it’s not interesting and I won’t look for excuses but it is really hard to accept.
‘In one of the biggest games against Man United (a fortnight ago) he (Antonio Valencia) was two or three yards offside (for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s equaliser) and no one really speaks about it.
‘We’ve had a lot of offside goals against us which shouldn’t have been allowed and then a handball.’

“It was also very windy here and it affected us which is the team that wants to play football”

Imagine if Wenger had said this after losing two legs against Southampton

  31. China

Lol have two back ups in the team and the result doesn’t count?

    Interesting lol

Liverpool weren’t playing against our under 21s. We had close to a full strength team.

It’s saddening to think that our u21 style carling cup squads from circa 2005 used to play better than we did at Liverpool and could’ve probably got a result out of that game

Even though very few of our youth players went on to achieve anything, that period in the early to mid 2000s produced so many incredible youth team performances.

I’d kill for that level right now…

Egypt to play Morocco in the quarter finals on Sunday. if they win the semi final is next Wednesday, 3 days before the Chelsea game.

  34. Pierre

The negative side to Liverpool playing poor and losing to Southampton is their confidence may be shot to pieces for the Chelsea game next week…

Liverpool will comfortably see off Chelsea unlike Arsenal who routinely shit their pants when up against the bigger sides.

  36. qna

RT: Liverpool will comfortably see off Chelsea unlike Arsenal who routinely shit their pants when up against the bigger sides.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal will lose to Chelsea. Spurs will maintain the 9 point gap in 2nd, but you can as good as call the league at the final whistle on 4th of Feb.

  37. Samesong

Pedro, you have recommended, among others, Tuchel and Martinez … well how are they doing???

Not watching their teams from the stands I’ll tell you that.

    Martinez is shit though.

  38. Wallace

yeah, if Chelsea get 4pts from the games against Liverpool and ourselves that’s almost certainly the league sewn up for them.

  39. freddylekgunner

Wallace even if Chelsea earn 2 points from their next two games I think they’ll win the league. We can only hope for Liverpool to beat them and we get a draw at Chelsea.

There is a business model pursued very successfully by s few clubs like Southampton, which accept they will never have the financial clout of the Utd, Real, Barcas etc but look for a way to compete.

    They value three things:
    1. High quality technical coaching of a consistent system, from academy and youth through to 1st team.
    2. Superior scouting according to brief, allowing them to target those who will benefit greatly from their set up.
    3. Ambitious managers who want the same for themselves as the players they develop (a promotion to a bigger club). Kidman, Pocchetino, Unai Emery, Brendan Rodgers at his own level.
    4. Players who see the club as a stepping stone to bigger things, incentivising them to perform in the shop window.
    5. A commercial team with the skills of venture capitalists, making money in situations more risky than those at top clubs.

Swansea were very successful until recently using this model. So were Sevilla, who may be graduating to better things with the hiring of Jorge Sampaoili. Leicester won the league thst way and have had difficulties when changing the pay structure. Spurs are maybe transitioning out of it with their new stadium…..

The mindset you need to succeed in this is very different to thst of a multinational. Much less fat to cushion inefficiencies, ability to fall off a cliff if the organisation takes a collective 6 month breather. I worked in such arenas outside football for a decade and you learned how to beat bigger organisations in beauty parades, knowing that targeting clients who wanted the excuse ‘nobody got fired for hiring IBM’ is the fastest route to failure known.
