Arsene Wenger dances around what will really make Ozil and Sanchez stay

Well, it’s f*cking cold in Alaska, let me tell you that for free. Couldn’t get into the car for 10minutes because the doors and the boot were iced in.

Arsene Wenger left my hands and toes numb when I read his predictable press conference. He’s taking Alexis to Basel just in case PSG are turned over by team so poor they still consider the magic sponge part of the backroom team.

I don’t mean to be a moaner here, but let’s be real, Arsenal against a top team in the CL are very unlikely to win over two legs unless we do something drastically different this season. 1st or 2nd has marginal consequences for where we finish, we’ve not managed win out against the Barcelona’s or the Bayern’s which some say is fair (I don’t because you should be able to come up with at least a fluke every now and then), but we’re also capable of dropping out against a struggling Monaco.

I really don’t understand why Wenger doesn’t leave Alexis at home. Well, unless he plans to rest him against Stoke so he’s explosive against Everton? Then I’d be fine with his inclusion. I still don’t understand why we need to throttle him every game. The team needs to at least have a go at playing without him so we’re not full on useless if he picks up an injury, which becomes ever more likely the more we continue to persevere with him every game.

The squad is the same as it was at the weekend (if I’m reading Wenger’s comments correctly), bar Coquelin who is suspended. When I wrote the other day that this December would be decided on decisions like who he takes to Basel, this is exactly what I thought he’d do. He can’t resist. Last time took a mega squad to a terrible team away, we lost Santi Cazorla for the rest of his career. Seems a massive risk for a game he could easily rotate in the league cup disappointments who owe us a performance. Also disappointed to see Ozil heading out there a player we know dips bigly in the second half of the season (is it ok to use Trumpism’s?).

Also, what’s up with Perez. Is he a flop or what?

Talking of our star players, Wenger thinks Ozil and Sanchez care about things other than cash money.

“I believe personally, and maybe I am a bit naive, that it’s more about getting to meet the player’s needs. That’s more about the way the club has values, the way the club has ambition, the way the club respects the players.

“So I think, for me, that is more important nowadays and an important ingredient for every player to consider. The money is good everywhere for everybody.

“You know, nowadays, you negotiate with the agents more than with the player. We are in negotiations, yes. The players [Sánchez and Mesut Özil] are 18 months away from the end of their contracts, so it’s normal to be talking. But the players always come in at the end, when it’s a renewal, because with the first contract you need the players present. But after that, when you renew, 90% of the contracts are negotiated with the agents.”

DAMN STRAIGHT THEY DO

They care about that silverware. Those boys are already rich. More money is keeping up with the Jones’s, and it’s totally acceptable for both of them to think they should earn more money than Adebayor and Nasri. But the key to them staying for me, would be that they’re both able to compete for the top honours in Europe.

Do they think they can achieve that under Arsene Wenger? Maybe not. Which is a problem for two players about to hit their prime. I mean, let’s be real here, Sanchez has played under Pep G, Ozil has played under Mourinho in the good times, they both fully understand where the disparity is… so what do the club do to ensure the two are convinced the future is red and white?

If Wenger is leaving, does Ivan give them a sneak peak at his list of replacements? You’d have to doubt that… but he can’t let them leave before the new manager has had the chance to give them the once over.

I also love that Wenger thinks it’s about values. Like Sanchez is sitting there, casually dabbing lipstick on his dog, as he mulls over the unsung details of the club …

‘Geez, I admire the fact that Arsenal sent Martin Keown to open that pitch for Syrian refugees. I mean, imagine if Vladimir Putin was as deft at dealing with Aleppo as Ivan Gazidis is with the guy who asks about the price of Bovril at the AGM. Wouldn’t the world be a beautiful place? Fuck yeah it would. Where’s that contract, I’m gonna sign whatever the number.’

Values when your life is dogs and football is about having money to treat your dogs well and trophies to make your football seem purposeful.

That’s why I’m very worried about Sanchez becoming one of the best strikers in the world right now. That’s why I’m worried about rumours of Pep flirting with him. That’s why I fear the links to Juventus and Bayern. My world is caving in, SOMEONE MAKE IT STOP.

Right, enjoy the game tonight, pray for a massive rotation, and pray for the hamstrings of all our best players. We have some super important games coming up, this one is the least of our worries…

I think it’s time we put to bed the idea Sanchez isn’t a good passer.

Not saying he is a high pass percentage player just saying guy is fucking good at cresrinf chances.

The past for the first goal and the pass for the final goal were terrific.

People need to realise what a talent we have on our hands. Guys got way more strings to his bow then just hard work and athleticism

  2. Wallace

    Romford

    “Granit Xhaka #controlla”

yeah, love watching him. another dodgy tackle in the 2 nd half which he needs to cut out, but the weight and angles he finds on his passes, he’s like a mirror image of Xabi Alonso.

  3. Ashley

Now all we need to do is play like this against the big boys , then people will be convinced. Although we have only lost 2 games all season , it’s our performances against the top teams that is raising questions …. Happy we won , happy we top the group , no matter who we face that’s obviously good for moral , but yeh we need to up our game against better teams ….

  4. ArseneisaFraud

I missed the game due to work 🙁 but I am so glad to see that we have made top of the group. Can’t believe that PSG f*cked it up, but then again who cares!

Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that the draw be a favourable one as it would be great to see us do more than we have been lately in the CL!

    Come on The Arsenal!!

  5. London gunner

Credit to Wenger he certainly called it right tonight.

Footballs a funny game youbthink it’s over till it’s not

  6. Goonereris

Bacary, hahahah! Saw that reminder in the video, and from the mouth of the man himself. “If you take me out, always I’m angry”. Why not? He has 23 assists now, in Europe, just 1 behind Messi and 3 behind CR7. He looks happy here and I am willing to bet he will sign soon.

  7. Wenger's Wallet

Good result. Played with heart and passion. Perez looked good if given room. Why cant we show movement up front like that every weekend? Enjoyed that result. Stoke next. Come on to feck Arsenal. Keep her lit

  8. Thanos

London alonso is more you combatative deep lying midfield general where as pirlo is your silky ball playing maestro

  9. SUGA3

This was pleasant to watch, really happy for Perez, you can tell he knows where the goal is and is on the lookout for poacher’s opportunities, which is something we have been missing for a while. Good game too, Basel showed they are no mugs. Happy for Ludogorets too!

Celebratory tune, going to dude’s gig in Amsterdam in Feb., can’t wait!

  10. DaleDaGooner

Lucas Perez has to be in the first 11 , Wenger needs to cut the bs off! Ramsey ham roll and even Iwobi shouldn’t be starting ahead of him!

  11. Leedsgunner

We need to use this momentum and crush Stoke. Don’t even THINK about complacency.

Give Perez another go on the wing versus Stoke. I would personally keep Iwobi on the bench and use him as an impact player… gradually introduce him into the side to give him time to find his confidence and form…

Don’t want him burning out through being overplayed…

Credit where it’s due. Wenger got the selection spot on tonight… hats off to him.

  12. Black Hei

    “Bring back our Red.”

I second this. Always have a soft spot for Red Troll. Less annoying than Joe and Steve but still much more trollish. How he does that is a wonder on its own.

  13. reality check

I actually give him more credit than our current trolls because he admitted to me on several occasions that he wanted arsenal to lose and would be happy if arsenal got relegated provided it meant wenger leaving.
At least he was honest- as well as being pretty nutty.

Oh Red you absolute lunatic hahahahha

  14. Emiratesstroller

Missed the game last night due to prior engagement. Had assumed that PSG would top the group by winning in Paris!

Clearly Arsenal beginning to hit goalscoring form once again. We have scored 57 goals this season including 3 hat tricks so the team is not short of goalscoring potential.

When you consider last season’s posts on Le Grove this is certainly very
    good news!

  15. Bamford10

Xhaka has nothing in common with Pirlo. Nothing.

The Alonso comparison makes a little bit of sense, given that both are CDMs, both like a long pass, both like a tackle.

Xhaka will need to impress much more, however, to be anything akin to Alonso.

  16. China

Excellent result and a bit of luck with psg sorting the rest. Regardless of our luck though, we’ve got 14 points which will win you almost any CL group (I said almost!) and never once messed up with the two weaker teams like we usually might. We got through two games vs one of the world’s most expensive teams unbeaten. If we were offered that before the season began I think we’d all agree that’s a job well done

  17. Bamford10

Great chipped pass from Alexis on the first goal. Good, careful finish from Lucas. Really like him. Seems a humble, honest person.

Combination play and understanding between Ozil and Sanchez is something special.

  18. grooveydaddy

    China

agreed. our aim was to win the group and we did it without losing, but also with some luck, as you said.

however, the way we played in both games against PSG, suggests there is still quite a bit of work to do (particularly in midfield) to be ready for the better sides in the knock-out phase.

  19. China

Partly I agree in that our performances haven’t been there against a lot of the strong teams this season. I guess Chelsea was the exception.

But there’s another way to look at it. We’re getting points against the teams we should be in the league and CL and we’re not losing to the strong teams. We need to pick up some more wins in these games if we want to win anything meaningful this season – but if you can collect your points vs the weak teams and not lose vs the best teams when you’re nowhere near your best it’s a pretty good sign.

In years gone past we’d lose these games vs utd or psg. Instead we’ve kept pretty clean momentum so far by avoiding defeat and generally winning with style (a couple of exceptions aside)

Imo this ability to not lose is what we’re going to need if we’re going to do better in the league and CL this year

It’s how we made the final in 06. We didn’t score that money but we never conceded and we couldn’t be beaten. If you’re not losing and not conceding many then you have a chance vs anyone with the attacking players we have to nick a goal. Our defense now isn’t flawless like it was in that CL campaign but I’d also argue our attack is scoring more which helps to balance it

I want the easiest possible draw as much as the next person and I think it would do wonders for our momentum and confidence to get a weaker team and do the job cleanly to make the quarters. But if we do I don’t really think we should be looking at big teams with fear. Respect, yeah, but not fear. We have a very capable squad when the team is fit and sharp so resilience in defense and Sanchez and ozil making shit count up top could be enough

This is a long way off now though and absolutely anything could happen in the mean time…

  20. China

Too many times Arsenal have pissed results away by letting the scale of the occasion get to them

Even at our worst we’ve always had very talented squads, despite being clearly short of the best. The fact that we’ve never beaten Bayern or barca over two legs after so many matches isn’t because they haven’t been beatable, it’s because we’ve played with fear.

Even shit teams beat these teams once in a while. There’s literally no hypothetical reason why we can’t do an 06 and get a tight draw and a slim win to knock these teams out. It’s football and even though some teams have Ben far better than us in recent years, it’s on arsenal’s mental weakness that we *always* fail rather than because those teams are unstoppable

  21. China

Tho tbf barca always have the ref in their pocket so beating them over two legs in Europe is such a big ask. I remember when rvp was ludicrously sent off immediately after the ref let 4 consecutive fouls go from barca players.

    FUCKING JOKE

  22. DaleDaGooner

Reading joe and steve comment, you know they are trolls….embarrassing stuff from these two clowns…..embarrassing that they are allowed to post anything Arsenal

  23. underrated Coq

I see that the media are at it again, with their ‘Arsenal are lucky’, ‘PSG gift Arsenal top spot’ and other nonsensical headlines.

No, both Arsenal and PSG played the same set of fixtures and Arsenal finished top because they deserved it as they performed better. Get over it.

  24. Frank Mc

Speaking on BT Sport after the final whistle, Gerrard said: “I just love his unselfishness and his awareness. He’s putting them across the six-yard box for people to tap in. ”

“He’s the type of player you’d love to play with.”

  25. mysticleaves

Your Comment HereFor people wanting red back, he is already back! as “Bystander”.

only red comes out with gems like “i rate Chile over barca”. “sanchez has scored 9 of 11 goals against small teams away”.

    Red is back!!

  26. Joe

No, both Arsenal and PSG played the same set of fixtures and Arsenal finished top because they deserved it as they performed better. Get over it

They completely outplayed us in Paris and were the better team in London.

If it wasn’t for cavani missing a dozen chances that even sanago could have scored on most days , this would not have even been close.

Don’t try to dress it up as something it’s not

PSG lost that group because of cavani.

  27. Goonereris

Sanchez only scores against “small teams”? So, City (2), United (2) Spurs, etc are now classed as small teams?

The man has over 50 goals for us. So who cares which sides they have come against?

  28. Joe

And don’t accuse me of trolling because of
My last post. If you really thing we performed better than PSG in our two matches with them then it’s you who’s trolling

    Especially the one in Paris.
