Arsene Wenger Birthday Present: 3 points and the league

by .

wenger-bday

Here it is. Burnley away. What a place to celebrate your 20th season.

Quite astonishing to put 20 years into perspective. I was 12 years old when Wenger dropped. No one had a clue who he was, it took me a while to remember his name. It took me even longer to remember the names of the players he started to sign.

Wenger was like a real life Championship Manager. He wasn’t messing around in the British Isles, he was powering at names I’d seen on computer games. The excitement he brought to the league was spectacular. There were some names you had no clue about who came good… kick-starting the ‘Arsene knows’ mantra I’m so fond of. Then there were the names you knew that he revived.

Some my favourite signings came from the latter batch. Nwankwo Kanu was a pure party of a football player. I’d never seen a man so unorthodox, languid and incrediblskillfulll ply his trade in England. Marc Overmars still is one of my favourites was brought over by Arsene. A bit of a crock at Ajax, Wenger managed to get him fit and firing. Overmars cutting in from outwide and bobbling the ball low and hard… great memories.

Then there’s the ultimate revival story, Theirry Henry. What a powerhouse. Charisma, good looks, lightning pace and finishing to die for. That man gave us all so much joy over his 8 or so years of incredible service.

You also had the characters. Giles Grimandi. Always good for a yellow card after 68 seconds on the pitch. Pascal Cygan, what a hopeless signing… I’ve no idea how he attained a weird cult status, but he did. Alex Manninger, played an integral role in the close of one of our seasons. I think it was West Ham in the league cup where he bossed some seriously stunning saves. Freddie Ljungberg and that red hair… so many good times singing that song at Cardiff!

I think outside the trophies, the greatest part of Wenger’s tenure has to be our utter dominance of Spurs. No one has been worse for the scum than him. Total brutality. They even tried to copy us with Christian Gross who was utterly diabolical. Wenger made going to school much easier for me. I didn’t really have to tolerate that horrible feeling of failure you’d get after losing to Spurs. I’ll forever be thankful for that. Genuinely, that last minute toppling of Spurs last year was one of the best things that’s happned to us in the last ten years. It’s Wenger’s thing.

The main memory I’ll thank him for is the joy he created by allowing me to connect with my family. My youth, growing up with my dad was basically a whole bunch of good times at the Arsenal. When he’s gone, in like, 60 years, I’ll always remember the life lessons I learnt from him around Arsenal… swearing, beering, escapism and total commitment to game. Even in the bad times, Wenger still dominates conversation, which means there’s never a dull conversation.

Under Arsene, we even connected with a different part of the family, in totality down to the fact that Arsenal was the common grounding. That still bonds us to this day. I’m forever thankful that my upbringing wasn’t built around misery, like it was for West Ham or Spurs fans.

There’s gotta be some weird life lessons in there that I’m not aware of… Arsene in his early days was about getting shit done to the highest quality, on a budget, with class.

… nope, that’s not impacted my life, but damn… I’d love to be able to say that.

I guess as well, Wenger was the reason this blog started… so there, I stole a career off the back of it. Cheers Arsene!

The second 10 years, well, the stadium, sure… but I think the decline was disguised partly by the financial issues. But look, it is what it is… if he can finish off on a league win this season, it’ll be a fairytale like no other.

… and that has to start today. No pussying around eating birthday cake. We need to dish out a spanking to Burnley and we need to continue to build pressure on City. Who look incredible at the moment.

Also worth noting that a lot of teams look good at the moment. Spurs are playing well. Liverpool keep winning, which I hope will fall to pieces. Chelsea picked up 3 points (against Hull, so whatever). It’s imperative we don’t fall asleep today. We’re pretty good with promoted teams, so three points and no injuries would be lovely. It’s also important we head into the international break with confidence.

After that, our next 7 matches culminate in a game against Spurs… we have a pretty sweet run heading into that game. If we come out of that with 10 points, we’ll go into the Christmas period in positive shape.

… and boy, that period looks mighty tricky!

Enjoy the celebrations today, happy anniversary to Wenger, let’s make it a season to remember!

    Should we start believing?

That’s 2 wins in stoppage times..Soton and this…5 games in a row..Swansea next at home . Another clean sheet. In fact 3Rd clean sheet in a row.

If we put our feet down and avoid long term injuries..we will definitely be up there contesting till the end.

I’m not happy with Ozil’s efforts at all. I also think he needs to put more effort. It’s a fact that we don’t have world beaters in the team who can match his vision, hence I think he gets frustrated at times when his teammates aren’t in the same wavelength.. Like that time near them end when he made a darting run into the box and someone (one pint too many) missed to pass the ball to him.. He immediately started sulking and started his prima Donna act kicking ball left and right looking geniuinly uninterested and frustrated. Such a sad viewing.

He is no doubt a great orchestrator of the game, but he seriously lacks accountability when the chips are down. Someone needs to spank him good and man him up a more

  4. Rambo Ramsey

I have seen plenty of teams put 10 men behind the ball against Arsenal, but very few to the manner that Burnley did today. They had 8 men in their 18 yard box for most of the game, makes it all the worse that they were the home side.

Sure, you can take that ‘tactic’ as a mark of respect but it did make the game a horrible one to witness.

Re Arsenal, I was frankly baffled at the intelligence of some of our players. Kept doing the same thing despite evidence suggesting it was better to try something different. Especially from the players on the right flank.

  5. Rhys Jaggar

Wenger said the players were jaded, heavy legged and lacked sharpness. This was entirely predictable and obvious to those who are not paid £10m a year to pick the side.

I said before Basel he should have rested Iwobi. He was leggy after 60 mins in midweek.

Gibbs would have been fresh, DItto El Neny. DItto Oxlade. DItto Perez.

Wenger really has to embrace squad rotation. Pocchetino rested Dier both games this week and they won twice. They won twice without Kane.

Today he got away with it, was extremely lucky.

If he is not careful, his luck will run out.

  6. Ethan-gunner

    Good post Pedro…
Totally agree with all the nostalgia over the past 20 years and like you , liked bantering with your old man …. and now my son and I carry on like you and your father … we were blessed to barrack for this team …
Even in the ade days where things were rock bottom , we always had a chance and
Whilst things looked grim some times or even most times winding down , we still remained top 4 and had many proud moments looking back ….

Nice 3 points tonight , Wenger again proves he cant influence the game with his subing of players but 3 points is “3 ” points

  7. Sam

We were poor because we played 3 games in 7 days
The manager should have made at least 3 changes n Burnley knew we will play the same team so they did their homework to stop us

  8. raptora

Well you guys thought me that ball to hand is different to hand to ball. If it’s like that then the goal is legit and the 2 penalties are’nt. If it’s not like that – a faulty goal but 2 penalties not given. Anyways we’re gonna have trouble in the future of we don’t integrate another goal scorer in the team. Right now it’s either Alexis or Feo (occasionally Kos lol). Both are great threats but we Iwobi, especially Ozil who was terrible today and the rest should be waay more dangerous than atm. 3 points are all that matter doe.

  9. Ishola70

    Rambo Ramsey:
“They had 8 men in their 18 yard box for most of the game, makes it all the worse that they were the home side.”

No. No they didn’t. That again is doing them a disservice.

The reason they nullified Arsenal for most of the match is that they protected their flanks very closely and heavily. Played virtually with two fullbacks each side. Then were very quick to close the centre when play was switched to that area.

All this defending and the majority of it was nowhere near the 18 yard box. When they had to defend the 18 yard box they did but their primary defending was away from that area.

  10. Redtruth

That’s the problem with Wenger’s teams they need to play at a high tempo game in every game because Wenger is a such a hopeless coach hence the flat performance today..

  11. Ethan-gunner

    Rhys
Wenger has never used his bench players properly, he Subs at predictable intervals and makes the same predictable subs all the time , often benching strikers when goals are needed or failing to add defenders when the need for defending is necessary…

Having said that a goal in added time was
Great to see , you have to feel slightly sorry for the opposition… but fuck em 🙂

  12. Redtruth

Wenger can’t alter team pattern or play and relies on players putting in a shift in every game, which during the course of a season is impossible to do..

  13. Bermy boy

Left the game to work in my garden a minute before full time.I thought it was another play like you should have the first 89 mins ending. I don’t care how we won ,it just feels good with a win over the break.Another week top teams stumble and we pull it off hmmm so this how it feels……I likey although still cautious.

  14. Ethan-gunner

They parked the bus in front ..
Was always going to be a boring affair.
With the odd freak chance to break and score …

They made no effort to push forward or we would have minced them ….and put the game to bed earlier , and too their credit , it almost paid off

    ALMOST

  15. Rambo Ramsey

” The reason they nullified Arsenal for most of the match is that they protected their flanks very closely and heavily. ”

Really? We must have been watching different games. They literally left the wide areas wide open, knowing fully well that Sanchez and Walcott aren’t much of an areial threat. And to be fair to them, this was exactly what transpired. Pointless cross after cross from our fullbacks( esp Bellerin ) that barely troubled them.

All they did was pack their 18 yard box, barely bothered to pressure our players outside the box. Which is why I called for some long range shots in an earlier post.

  16. Redtruth

Aa23 briefly escaped from his secure unit to heap praise on Wenger’s boys…It’s sraggering the lengths these AKB’s will go to defend the indenfensibble

  17. Sam

    Bad days for doomers

Guadiola lost, his one man team getting exposed without De Bruyne
Arsenal still closed the gap after 90 minutes of illegal bus parking by burnley

    Sam,
    It was Koscielny’s goal.
Please don’t try to push OX’s agenda one bit.Even Wenger knows the bench is best for him.

That guy is stealing a living of Arsenal..5 yrs of uselessness at Arsenal.

  19. Rambo Ramsey

Think we missed Coquelin a bit today. The guy just raises the tempo and energy levels of the team. It was the same against Chelsea, we sort of slowed down after he went off.

  20. Ishola70

    Rambo Ramsey:

Yes you watched a different match.

  21. Alexanderhenry

An arsenal victory met with the usual fury on here. It’s as if only a 5-0 arsenal win every game will satisfy you people.

Redruth ..hoping we lose every game . What kind of fan are you?
I thought Joe had hit an all time low, hoping that we get relegated and that man city win the league unbeaten but you’ve matched him. Well done there.

What a strange place this is.

Anyway, we were lucky today..so what? Jammy wins like that win titles.

    Bring on swansea.

  22. Bishop

Seems it’s Swansea Boro and Sunderland next 3 games.

We need to really go for the full points.
Xhaka was tidy today but I can bet he’s back to the bench now Coq is back.

  23. DivineSherlock

Boy that goal has pissed off so many people on here. All Spurs , Liverpool , City , Chelsea and ManUtd cunts are angry haha , even the WOBs. Look at RedTruth rambling , oh wait he does that anyway. Enjoy the win people , we are 2pts behind the leaders .

  24. Ishola70

A team can’t defend to any proper extent by just packing their 18 yard box the whole match. Please get real.

But I suppose by just lazily suggesting that they did just that goes along with having this zero respect for them even though what they were instructed to do nearly saw them get a point.

  25. Ethan-gunner

They had 8+ defenders the whole game in front of the ball ,they parked the bus .
There was no space , so yes we watched different games .

I watched a boring one of burnley defending ,the score line reflects it , but a result is a result and better than a draw …

Sometimes when the game frustrates you for 90 minutes and then get a result like that it’s worth the wait …

Plus 3 games in 7 days takes it toll so it’s nice to be on the right side of the LUCK gods this season

  26. Bishop

    Redtruth,

When we win you complain.when we lose, same.

Which side of the fence are you for real??
What moment do you now enjoy as an Arsenal fan?

Me I enjoy winning cos it’s not about Wenger when we win,its about ARSENAL.

  27. Ishola70

    Ethan-gunner:
“They had 8+ defenders the whole game in front of the ball ,they parked the bus .”

Yes most of the time but not all packed in the 18 yard box. That’s just silly talk.

As said before they defended their flanks heavily and closely and Boyd and the other guy on the other side were basically playing as second fullbacks.

  28. The Godfather

“Arsene’s Arsenal reverting back to type. HAHAHA! You don’t even have to predict this pile of shite every season. Flatter with a few wins then dun! dun! dun! reveals the ugly twat inside.”

What manner of fans are these smh

  29. Ethan-gunner

    Ishola

Burnley played it tight for 90 minutes

91 minutes in fact .. they played man on man tight drone like defence , which was boring to watch but effective enough to neutralise our free flowing game . It’s typical of a team that has no class , fat Sam tactics …
    I’ll take the 3 points
Luck doesn’t often go our way so today I’ll take it …

  30. DivineSherlock

    Redtruth

A win is a win , you can enjoy the win and still criticize the club but don’t discredit it man , we deserved 3pts there.

  31. Rambo Ramsey

The worry is, this new pacy attacking system was supposed to be the answer to our long standing issue of breaking down defences that sit deep. Yet, we struggled today-and it was worse than the plodding days of Giroud.

  32. Bishop

    Redtruth

Am not stupid. Sorry if the question hurt you.
Am just suprised cos am WengerOUT too but I enjoy all manners of Arsenal win.

You said we are flack track bullies beating Burnley that spanked Liverpool 2nil there.

A lot are calling Liverpool contenders.

  33. Rambo Ramsey

Yes, thank God for champs like you, Ishola70, defending plucky little Burnley against arrogant and disrespectful people like me. Perhaps after this little exercise, get off the high chair and go and see the heatmaps.

  34. Bishop

Vardy must be the biggest fool turning us down just cos he felt Leicester can push again this season.

They will finish at best 8th

  35. Ishola70

    Rambo Ramsey:
“Yes, thank God for champs like you, Ishola70, defending plucky little Burnley against arrogant and disrespectful people like me. Perhaps after this little exercise, get off the high chair and go and see the heatmaps.”

But RR Arsenal won the match so I don’t see why you need to rag on Burnley for? If Arsenal hadn’t won I would understand maybe some frustration with them.

They worked very hard and showed good application today in what they were instructed to do. Can you not appreciate hard work and application in football or does it have to be about “the beautiful game” all the time?

Heat maps? lol. Why do you need to refer to those for? Thought you watched the game yourself. Let’s hope this site with the heat maps isn’t the same that told you Sanchez had eight key passes in the match 😉

Stats sites. Lol. They are not the holy grail you know.

  36. Oyakuza

We played in the midweek with the same players vs Bale and Cheslki a week ago. Furthermore Burnley are a physical and a tought team at home. Hard to beat. I believe Wenger when he says the boys were tired. Let’s be happy for the lucky 3 points. I wish them a good international break and I hope they will come back fresh with the same commitment and winning mentality..

  37. Bishop

    RSPC

Wenger was just desperate when he when to Vardy.

He wouldn’t suit this new style of fast counters and interchanging upfield.

He is a kick and run kinda striker. Nothing more.

Also seems Walcott so far looks more promising on the right Mahrez.Mahrez hasn’t had a single good/ great game for 7 games now in the league.

  38. freddylekgunner

If you can’t enjoy Arsenal winning a match then why are you supporting the team and wasting your time here.

  39. Gainsbourg69

Redtruth: “That’s the problem with Wenger’s teams they need to play at a high tempo game in every game because Wenger is a such a hopeless coach hence the flat performance today”

This is Pep’s philosophy as well.

  40. Bishop

This should be the make or break season for Chamberlain.

There shouldn’t be any reason for keeping him after this season if he won’t proof himself. Although seems he has nothing to proof as he’s the definition of shit.

Ozil for me is so talented but needs to show more consistency.

Mustafi is just a no nonsense mother fucking defender. . Koss stays back to clean up if need be when Mustafi goes in hard.

Mertesacker can just forget about playing again for Arsenal.

Holding / Gabriel should play the cup games. If incase we need 1 to come in to play first team in case of injuries, it should be Holding. Very assuring young defender.

  41. Ishola70

Celta Vigo trashing Barca 3-0 not half time yet.

Had a bet on over 1.5 first half goals but didn’t expect to win the bet in quite that way.

  42. The Iceman

Important win but surprise surprise the usual cunts are disappointed.

Embarrassing excuse for so called arsenal ‘supporters’

  43. Bishop

Celta dishing it out to Barcelona big time.

It’s not over though but at least no Messi, so then, less magic.

  44. Bishop

Glen Johnson called up for England.

Just seems England always have lunatics running their football affairs.

Walker / Clyne…so why the drama of Johnson?

  45. freddylekgunner

Red you didn’t reply to my post about the Chelsea game, are they also a small team we “flat track bullied”

  46. Al

Thought we showed good character today. Kept on going until the last second trying to win it and it paid off.

That’s the minimum you can ask from your team is to give it their all and today I can say they did even though we was struggling.

  47. Marko

Glen Johnson. Oxlade Chamberlain, Lingaard and Sturridge got called up for the English squad. Absolute laughing stock I swear. Sturridge hasn’t scored in about 7 or 8 games and Lingaard and Oxlade Chamberlain barely play for their clubs. And Glen Johnson???

  48. Bishop

Southgate calling Ox/ Lingard up is definitely not merit. Sentiments maybe.

They haven’t done anything meaningful this season.

  49. Pierre

Missed coquelin big time…..he would have been in their faces further up the pitch , making things happen…..so important we get him back asap

  50. gunnergetyou

“Missed coquelin big time…..he would have been in their faces further up the pitch , making things happen…..so important we get him back asap”

Not sure how our most defensive midfielder would’ve made a difference in a game where we had all the possession.

Our forwards just weren’t sharp enough but somehow we got away with it.

  51. LeMassiveCoq

I think the ‘anti-shoot’ vibe that runs through Arsenal really plays in to the hands of extreme bus parking performances like that of Burnley’s today.

If you have a couple of deep lying midfielders who are willing to take a few pot-shots from 5-10 yards outside the box, this naturally draws the defense out to try and prevent or block those shots. This ‘drawing out’ creates a bit more room for players to operate in and around the edge of the box. Instead Arsenal are always tring to thread the ball through impossibly narrow channels, which occasionally comes off and looks great.

Mix it up Arsenal, try some fucking long shots. Bollocks to the stats.

  52. loyika

Ryder’s cup looking to close for comfort. The Yanks should just wrap it up already. Jeez!!

    @ Ice

ask Joey boy that question. Funny as he is never around whenever the team gets a win but is ever present when we lose!? Quite strange.

  53. Redtruth

    Uceman

It’s a results business …silly,.. that is unless you believe which i’m inclined you do believe that Wenger is exempt from being held accountable for Arsenal’s results….

  54. Leedsgunner

Something has changed. Even last season we wouldn’t have won games like this.

I have complained and lambasted the team and the manager plenty but I have to give Arsene and the lads credit for the points fiercely won.

Never have I listened to a game more like intensely whilst driving home. Played it to the last minute… fantastic grit and determination. Fighting to the end. Sure I would have wanted 2 or 3 more goals to us but no matter, three points are three points.

It’s in games like this that champions are made. It’s very early days but dare we dream? Will this be our year? 🙂

Come on you Boys in Red and White!

“They were utter shit the whole game….we have had the invincibles…..Wenger has now created…The unconvincibles”

I’ll take the 3 points (even with us resorting to “tippy tappy lite” aka “wengaball”) ………………….but how “The Unconvincibles” didn’t become “a thing” for us to be known as over the last few seasons actually blows my mind.

  56. Thanos

Happy 21st Arsene make this your last season and make it a happy one for us by winning the title. Keep on winning gunners

  57. Luffy

The studio ref analyst (Howard Webb type guy) on the channel I was watching said it was a clean goal because:

1.) At the moment Sanchez crosses the ball in, Boyd is playing Kosc and Chambo on.

2.) Both Kosc and Chambo try to connect with the ball, Kosc being the closest. But Chambo’s shot hits his leg; Chambo doesn’t actually have any contact with the ball, his foot only caught Kosc hence no offside.

3.) So Kosc’s shot changes it’s trajectory after the impact with Chamberlain’s foot, and the ball catches him off-guard from a close distance; hence the no handball.

So technically the goal wasn’t even unfair!

  58. Joe

    Right here loyika

    Don’t worry sunshine.

Great win. Convincing performance. Offensive masterpiece. Beautiful football.

  59. Obie

Just saw the goal. Watching Ox wheel away in delight was cringeworthy. His flick was going wide had Kos’ hand not intervened and there he was, about to explode with joy when in reality his effort was utter shite

Disclaimer: No offense to Koz or the 3 points

Please stop referring our winner to “Hand of God” ffs, go with “Hand of Koz” or something…….The goal from (THE G.O.A.T.) Diego was an thing of evil beauty due to his awareness/greatness on the pitch.
Koz was just in the right place at the right time to get a ball knocked into his face then his hand……and thank god/berkamp he was there to bungle it home.

  63. JJ

The team looked tired today and missing their recent cutting edge – iwobi, bellerin, theo and Ozil in particular. They need a rest to get back to their best. This might be a good international break for us. Except for Ozil, who looked dead on his feet for most of the game.

  67. raptora

What’s worrying is that we didn’t look dangerous enough. Theo and Alexis both had a relatively quiet day and they both looked MIIILES ahead of the rest of the team in terms of being a danger for the opposition. Iwobi as good as he is playing atm he doesn’t look as a big goal threat maybe that’s why Wenger subbed him with Ox who gets a goal here and there. But what about Ozil! The dude has been terrible yet another match. I have all but sympathy towards him but god he looks like he doesn’t give a flying fuck about it. Walcott could have passed him the ball in the 88-th minute or smth but he chose to shoot, followed by Ozil making gestures with his head, hands and chasing the ball with frustration, then he passed to Mustafi and he was still swearing and his body language was like he doesn’t wanna play this game anymore. Even Alexis was moving to the middle of the pitch in try to sharpen up our game (with some success I must say) cause the maestro had an off day yet again. I can understand Real M for offloading him.
He can be so unprofessional at times its out of my mind. And that added to a bad performance is a disgrace. Point is: you have a seriously bad game so you get your shit together and you play with the upmost desire. You don’t curse fellow teammates and hide, and make stupid gestures out of frustration when you did absolutely NOTHING all game. Like if you guys think one person in our team who is playing the worst since the start of the season it’s gotta be the german. He’s looked like the weak link in our team for the most of the games so far and his contributions have been way too rare to justify his place in the team. I seriously wonder if Ramsey from the Euros might do better atm. Cause we need more threat than just Feo and Alexis.

  68. Joe

But Joey boy it wasn’t and we won!? You really are a quite strange Arsenal FC supporter!?

These things even themselves out through a season. We will definately have games where decisions go against us and also game where we will either draw or lose, thats part of football, but your moaning just reachee new heights of delusion.

I have said it already amd will say it once again; YOU HATE THIS TEAM!! Has nothing to do with the Manager as win, draw or lose your comments will always be the same.

Even DT (Champion of the WOBs) on Arsenal Fan TV can still give the team credit and scream his head off after every win and yet still maintain his hard core Wenger Out Mantra. That my friend is a true supporter of the TEAM (ARSENAL FC) you frankly are not.

As long as the narrative has nothing to do with AW leaving you show your truc olours!!

Anyways i am sure you will get back to posting over 5 pages when next the team lose or draw a game.

    Obie:
“Just saw the goal. Watching Ox wheel away in delight was cringeworthy. His flick was going wide had Kos’ hand not intervened and there he was, about to explode with joy when in reality his effort was utter shite”

    True enough. Comedy goal really.

Ox shot was going over the bar and it would have gone down as a very bad miss from him. He was generally shit in the short space of time he was on the pitch with some sloppy passing. He has to be offloaded sooner rather than later.

Whether the goal should have stood really you can’t put that down as an intentional handball by Kos. Yes he has his hands up but the play is so quick and the ball is blasted at him from such a short distance that he didn’t even have time to think to get an advantage from the situation. Just a rub of the green there.

The two players to get credit for the goal are Sanchez who put the cross in and Walcott who flicked the header on to the far post area and these two players were the most noticeable in playing right until the final whistle. Even Kos deserves credit for getting in the danger area right at the death and getting in the way of the OX shot.
