Giroud has ‘many suitors’ stories. Real, or the start of an Arsenal PR cycle?

I get the jitters easily as an Arsenal fan, writing about my club most days means I’ve seen the PR cycles. One cycle we often come across is the ‘attention pivot’… generally, this happens when Arsene Wenger is about the sign a new deal he doesn’t deserve, or it occurs when our summer of promise is going down the toilet and the club try and brace the fans in advance. It’s using fake interest from other clubs to make the fans value a duff decision.

Today, the story doing the rounds from The Mirror, is that Arsenal have turned down many offers for Olivier Giroud, because we now want to keep him in at the club, based on Euro 2016.

Now, for me, if Olivier Giroud, at 29, dropped a Euro 2016 that made ‘other’ clubs register interest, I’d be jumping at the chance to sell him at a premium we wouldn’t have landed had anyone spent the back end of the season watching him play.

But, the press are shaping our tiny little brains.

‘Oh man, if other clubs are looking at him, maybe we have a gem on our hands? Maybe, just maybe, it might not be smart to blow £50m on a striker. We have one of the top scorers at the Euros at our club’

‘He’s world class’

Remember, Arsenal sold Robin for a premium at 29. Yet we’re keeping Giroud? Puuuuurlease.

I might be totally wrong here. We might have an ace up our sleeves. But reports out of France say we’ve backed out of Lacazette because of price. Vardy has gone. Chelsea have apparently lodged a bid for Morata (going after their second striker of the summer). I mean, it’s not looking great is it?

I’m paranoid. Sure, it’s true. But my paranoia is based on the hard knocks of many Arsenal transfer summers. These stories leak for a reason… and it’s usually not a good one.

Giroud should not be our lead striker this season. He’s consistently shown he’s not good enough. Against Germany, he perfectly summed up why, at the highest level, he doesn’t cut it… regardless of what happens against a super average Portugal tomorrow.

We should have had a striker deal done 2 months ago. We should have had a backup waiting in the wings. But we didn’t. We lost the slack time we had with 3 new managers coming into the league. We didn’t make hay while our rivals were in unstable positions.

… and again, it looks like we’re losing the summer. It’s so annoying.

Also, final point. Mourinho looks like he might land Pogba. Ed Woodward has gone from transfer joke to the transfer king in one summer. What is the difference? Mourinho is a brand. He’s a wheeler-dealer. He has the world’s mega agents eating out the palm of his hand.

What do we have? A ditherer. Someone who won’t entertain super agents. Someone who doesn’t know how to get things done.

OVER AND OUT.

Big love x

Re Iwobi. I know you feel he is ready. We all felt Chambers was ready, now he might never be ready! People like Bellerin that come in and maintain/improve their levels from that age are very very rare.

What happens when Iwobi (who has shown his inconsistency already, but is undoubtedly talented) runs out of steam and start putting anonymous performances? Would you blame it on burn out or management?

In my case “running players into the ground” does not equate to fatigue. No. When you arm a player (Iwobi for eg) with competition he feels he’s already better than (walcot and Ox for eg) there’s no motivation. He does same things knowing he is better already. And yet he knows he still needs to learn cos he’s not good enough.

A perfect example of this was sterling at pool. Better than all they had but admittedly needed to learn so much more. What’s the end result? Someone that might never be good enough!

That’s why Iwobi needs to shadow a better winger and not play ahead of Walcot and Ox.

Big cheese and freddy said what they said well but I doubt jay jay is even close to Iwobi these days. He lives in Nigeria and is not part of the national team setup where he could work with iwobi

    Cheers Bamford!

    Bamford

I would start Cazorla, Ramsey or Elneny at #8 before Wilshere. He has a chance on the right, but I would prefer someone involved in more goals than JW. Özil is a far better creator and Alexis is a better goalscorer. Is it worth keeping a 120k a week squad player who is decent at best but injury prone, when you can upgrade your starting XI?

  3. Emiratesstroller

Iwobi is a good prospect, but at the moment he should not be considered more than a bench player.

He does not have the experience or consistency to play regularly in starting eleven.

Part of the problem with Wenger has been that too many of our youngsters have been overplayed during early stages of their careers and that has often
resulted in injuries and lack of progression.

  4. PaddyV91

“No sense to those comments whatsoever, based entirely on your own distaste towards how we’re run as a football club. I’d wager all but a dozen players in world football would shun us without consideration. Pretty ignorant not to appreciate what’s on the table from our club, suggest some of you try visiting us once in your life”

All but a dozen players would shun us …Champagne you really are a deluded sheep. Please tell me why any top player with any ambition to win things would want to come to a club like Arsenal with Wenger in charge?? The only trophy we challenge for is the odd fa cup every couple of years do you really think that has the best players in the world chomping at the bit to join us ….if you were a top class player where would like to play ask yourself that? It certainly wouldn’t be with a perennial loser club like Arsenal that’s for sure

“Lol Iwobi being first choice. I predicted his good play was simply a case of a young fairly talented player having the typical purple patch that happens when thrown in with no expectations…”

your predictions – remember 5mins before kick off against Man Utd last October when you predicted a disappearing act from Ozil? 20 mins later we were 3-0 up and Ozil had made the first and scored the second. disappearing act…lol

  6. Bamford10

“In 10yrs Wenger has taken us from a top 5 European club to being irrelevant. Think about that when you chant his name.” – The Divine Beard (@Pier147)

Just saw this on Twitter and thought it was sort of perfect in a way. Funny thing is such a remark is meaningless to the AKB/apologist: one, he does not see that we have become irrelevant; and two, he’ll obviously say, ‘It was Wenger who made us a top 5 European club.”

The AKB only sees Wenger’s first ten years — and cannot or does not see the rot of the second ten.

  7. Mysticleaves

Lol! “Chomping at the bit”. Only Brendan would really know what that means. Literally

    Bamford

Re CM positions, I really think its not set in stone that Xhaka takes one slot. They are all capable and should be played according to the opposition. Xhaka is good but not outstanding as some of us has made him to be.

Predominately though I would vot for a Xhaka-Ramsey middle going forward. If we want to be defensive then Xhaka – Coq/Elneny.

Harsh but I would sell Cazorla if someone comes for him.

Wilshere is a different case entirely. Not to forget Toral who SHOULD be kept.

  8. Paulinho

Wallace – You going to post up the league table on the first day of the season this time and to show what a great manager Wenger is?

Think this year even November might be too late for you,

Also funny how you focus on that Ozil comments before that match, and not the Sanchez ones. Selective as usual.

  9. Bamford10

Don’t look now but it seems that RedTruth rates a player in today’s game, namely Sanchez. Above he says that Alexis shouldn’t be valued at less than £58 million. That’s about as positive as I’ve ever heard Red be about a current player.

  10. Bamford10

    Emirates

Agree that Iwobi should not be regarded as a starter. Just a talented and promising youngster, whom we should be careful to bring along properly.

  11. PaddyV91

Even if we did somehow manage to sign a top class player this summer you would have to question his mentality. Why would Miktariyan choose Arsenal/Wenger over United/Mourinho if he wants to win things??? The naivety of some people on this blog is laughable

  12. Wallace

    Mystic

I wasn’t saying Iwobi as a nailed on starter. but he will need games if he is to improve. it was more the idea that young players are overplayed that I was taking issue with. were Ousmane Dembele(19) & Renato Sanches(18) impact subes last season, or were they starting every week?

  13. Jim Lahey

“Why would Miktariyan choose Arsenal/Wenger over United/Mourinho if he wants to win things???”

No player would choose Arsenal over United if they wanted to win things.

  14. Mysticleaves

Lol watch him say £57m was determined by current rates and not the player value

    ————————–
Just reading a stat on skysports that Kos has made just one tackle all tournament and 29 clearances though. Shows the kind of defender he is really. (Tries to) Reads the game and acts before damage is done

  15. Wallace

    Paulinho

“Also funny how you focus on that Ozil comments before that match, and not the Sanchez ones. Selective as usual.”

hey, if you’re going to be making a big deal out of your predictions not sure you can complain if someone highlights some of your less successful attempts.

  16. STV

I would sell Cazorla Coquelin, Welbeck,Wilshere Ramsey Walcott and Gabriel, loan Chamberlain Szchesny

Bring on Higuain Janssen Kante Stones..

    Promote Toral Iwobi.

  17. Mysticleaves

    Wallace

Fair enough. Dembele(19) and Sanchez(18) have out grown their current clubs that’s why they are leaving to go develop more.

You bet both won’t be starters at their new clubs but will figure moderately. That’s my argument. Proper management brings out the best in players.

  18. LONDONGOONER

    Mysticleaves
You would sell cazorla if someone came in for him?? Are you mad! He’s our top five players!
    In no order:
    Cech
    Ozil
    Sanchez
    Cazorla
    Bellarin?

I can’t believe you think selling cazorla would be a good idea, he need to stay all day long, I would however begin the process of replacing him and bring Isco in, a like for like replacement, whilst still keeping cazorla on for the next couple of years..

  19. Paulinho

Wallace – My ‘prediction’ was relevant to the discussion at hand. It seems you’ve completely wiped from memory how crap Iwobi was for the last month of the season.

I predicted that would happen just after the West Hame game, because I could see his game’s effectiveness was based on joie de vivre and being completely free in the mind. As soon as any amount of pressure or fatigue set in his game would go south pretty quickly – and it did.

  20. Adam A. Carbarundum

Wasn’t aware there was a boycott going on, @galaxygooner?

Nothing will change as long as One Insane Wenger remains. You know, I know it, everyone with a shred of intelligence knows it. Supporters will flock to The Emirates no matter what. It’s one vicious cycle of insanity.

  21. Jim Lahey

To be honest it is a really sad indictment as to where we are as a club that I can make the statement that no player would join us over United to win and not one person could sanely refute it.

And that is where we are! And some people are still perfectly okay with it..

  22. Wallace

    Paulinho

so you’re expecting very little from Iwobi this season?

you still think Bellerin’s a bit crap?

  23. Wallace

    Jim

“To be honest it is a really sad indictment as to where we are as a club that I can make the statement that no player would join us over United to win and not one person could sanely refute it. And that is where we are! And some people are still perfectly okay with it..”

Utd are pretty much the biggest club in the world, Jim. not sure players opting for them over us is ‘a sad indictment’ of our decline.

  24. Paulinho

Wallace- No, I’m not expecting much from Iwobi. Worrying Wenger – and his minions like you – seem to think we’ve unearthed some genius that’s going to take the world by storm. If does flop, you’ll try and rewrite history and claim ‘everyone’ thought he was great talent so we can’t blame Wenger of persisting with him.

Bellerin is decent. He is a big game player and that’s probably his best strength.

Not a patch on Lauren as a footballer though.

  25. Jim Lahey

” not sure players opting for them over us is ‘a sad indictment’ of our decline.”

Oh but it is… We have Champions league football, they don’t, I thought that was some sort of big deal around here? As the Wenger apologists tend to scream and point that he has kept us in this competition for the last 18 years…

Also, aren’t we a big club too? I mean, we’re not United sized, but we’re not far off in relative terms. Shouldn’t we be competing with them? We use to compete with them on the pitch, but those days are long gone.

  26. PaddyV91

Utd are pretty much the biggest club in the world, Jim. not sure players opting for them over us is ‘a sad indictment’ of our decline.

Wallace don’t give me that shit you could say the same about Chelsea or Man City. Any ambitious player would 100% choose them over us and that should not be the case

  27. Cesc Appeal

Everton are going to try and take Chelsea on for Koulibaly apparently, kkeep hearing bog things from them, Witsel, Mata, Schmiechel, Koulibaly, but its time to actually see something from them now…if they can back the talk they might be a problem team next year, a side added to the list of teams that we already need to watch out for in what will be a ridiculous EPL season.

Sort of agree a bit with Pedro, I don’t know if it is intentional or not, but you can see Wenger hailing keeping his players as something Arsenal fans should view as a success, lowers the bar for gratitude from the fans, ‘okay we only added a ST for the rest of the window, but we held onto Sanchez and that is as good as signing another player.’

  28. Emiratesstroller

    Bamford 10

When you look at our midfield and forwards there are three positions, which I
believe are set in stone and these are Xhaka, Ozil and Sanchez.

That leaves thee other positions, which are open to debate. These are second
central/defensive midfield position, wing and striker.

The central/defensive midfield position depends on the opposition. If we are
playing against a pressing side then I would opt for Coquelin. In other games
the two options would be Wilshire or Cazorla.

My view is that Ramsey needs to play in team based on current form. However, he needs to play in a more forward role as he did for Wales. Personally I
don’t see any reason why he cannot play with Ozil providing that they work
    collectively.

On the other hand if we are looking for a genuine winger then I think that
Arsenal need to buy a new player. None of the current options Walcott, Ox
    and Campbell are good enough.

The striker position has been discussed ad infinitum.

  29. Jim Lahey

“seem to think we’ve unearthed some genius that’s going to take the world by storm.”

Yeah Iwobi played well last year when he was called upon, but he didn’t take the league by storm… Look at Rashford at United, has a far greater impact than Iwobi, but you won’t see him in United’s starting 11 next year.

  30. Cesc Appeal

What is a more likely Wenger course of action, signing a wide playmaker, or Iwobi being thrust into the thick of it next year at RM?

Mystery of why Iwobi is being bigged up solved.

  31. Jim Lahey

“What is a more likely Wenger course of action, signing a wide playmaker, or Iwobi being thrust into the thick of it next year at RM?Mystery of why Iwobi is being bigged up solved.”

Promote from within will be this summers sound-bite from Wenger.

  32. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

It’s all looking rather dismal going into the new season in it?

I mean we now have 3 DM ,
    Santi on last leg…
Ozil an Sanchez shattered an not fully ready till November…

    No new signings
No assurabpnces that youth will be given a run out…

It really is rather shambolic at the club …

  33. Cesc Appeal

    Jim

I just think if there’s a hard, expensive way of doing things that arguably has a bigger chance for a pay off, Wenger will avoid it, if there’s an easier, cheap way of doing things, which he’s tried before and has failed so arguably has a lesser chance of success, Wenger will take it.

He always says he believes in his players, he believes the players he has now have everything in them to be successful.

Was talking to someone yesterday, say you had an owner who demanded a title tilt every year, at least, a proper challenge right up until last knockings, at least the quarter finals of the UCL every year and then a domestic cup, if not they would fire him or start to shop around for replacements…in that case, do you think Wenger would be so laid back in the market, that he would go with the players he has?

I don’t think so at all. And if you answer no to that question, then you have to admit Wenger is doing a bad job.

  34. Cesc Appeal

Who is likely to be missing for the first game then, Kozz, Giroud and potentially Ramsey, must be a chance Ozil won’t play then if Ramsey isn’t?

  35. PaddyV91

When Cesc wanted to come back to London a few years ago who did he choose….Chelsea. Why? Because he knew Wenger would never seriously compete for the top trophies whereas Chelsea would. He has a winning mentality he recognise the existence of the invisible 4th place trophy like the AKB’s such as Wallace Charlie etc

  36. Emiratesstroller

Man Utd may be CURRENTLY the largest club in UK, but are not bigger or more successful than Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Man Utd since retirement of Alex Ferguson are no better than Arsenal. Indeed
we have finished above them in last 3 years despite all the money that they have thrown at transfer market.

They have recruited Mourinho whose track record is based on short term success. Let’s see how well he performs this season. My guess is that Man Utd may struggle to make top 4 in league.

One lesson which needs to be learned that buying power alone is not a recipe for success.

My guess is that they will be competing with Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham for place in top 4.

  37. Jim Lahey

@PaddyV91 – “When Cesc wanted to come back to London a few years ago who did he choose….Chelsea”

And he turned out to be correct, won the league in his first year.

  38. Jim Lahey

    @CA –

Very true, if there was actual demands made of him I doubt he would have as much faith in his players.

All I want is for Arsenal to no longer be the laughing stock of Europe, not much to ask.

  39. PaddyV91

    RSPC

Yes and we have Mertesacker/Gabriel as one of our first choice CB’s with Chambers as back up hahaha it really is quite a pathetic gutless club at present with Wenger steering the ship with his loser mentality

  40. PaddyV91

    Mysticleaves

Do you really believe that if Fabregas wanted to come back Wenger would have said no to his golden child? And if he did it’s an even more damning indictment of the mans stupidity because you can’t tell me Cesc would not be an automatic starter for us

  41. Cesc Appeal

    Jim

Its like I said all throughout last summer, all I want is for my club with the resources that are available to them to give us the best possible chance, probabilistically, of success.

Right now I cannot say they are doing that, and they have not done that for the past few years (if you let them off the Emirates period in which I still think they could have been a bit more adventurous)…can anyone really say they are doing the above?

  42. Jim Lahey

“Do you really believe that if Fabregas wanted to come back Wenger would have said no to his golden child?”

I honestly think he would, Wenger would easily cut off his nose to spite his face. The man has demonstrated that he is the number one priority not the club.

  43. Jim Lahey

    @CA –

Is this summer 10 years since we moved into the Emirates?? This move was meant to propel us into the elite of world football.

But look at us, not able to secure a deal for a 29 y/o one season wonder from Leicester City.

    Its fucking sad.

  44. Wallace

    Jim

“Also, aren’t we a big club too? I mean, we’re not United sized, but we’re not far off in relative terms. Shouldn’t we be competing with them? We use to compete with them on the pitch, but those days are long gone.”

    they’ve finished 7th, 4th & 5th the last three seasons. we’ve gone 4th, 3rd & 2nd. not sure what you’re saying with the above.

  45. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal declined to buy Fabregas because his best role is as an attacking midfielder and Ozil was bought the previous season to play in that position.

Frankly there are/were other positions in our team, which were a priority.

  46. LONDONGOONER

Fab wanted to come back to us, Wenger was the one who said we had no space in the team what with wilshere Ozil Ramsey.. I personally would of taken him at 25mill jus to have him on the bench! Not that he would’ve been, at the end of the day you don’t say no to someone of dabregas class when they pass you by for a mere 25million not in today’s market anyway, you just grab chances like that.. Well Arsenal dont

  47. Jim Lahey

    @Wallace – “they’ve finished 7th, 4th & 5th the last three seasons. we’ve gone 4th, 3rd & 2nd. not sure what you’re saying with the above.”

    Sorry I will be clearer.

    Primer League: 06/07, 07/08, 08/09, 10/11, 12/13. That is 5 Primer League titles.

FA Cup: 15/16. Thats 1 FA Cup.

League Cup: 05/06, 08/09, 09/10. That is 3 League Cups.

Champions League: 07/08. That is 1 Champions League.

FIFA World Club Cup: 08. That is 1 World Club Cup.

So instead of looking at only the last 3 years, how about we look back to a time when we use to compete with United on the pitch.

  48. Wallace

    Jim

“So instead of looking at only the last 3 years, how about we look back to a time when we use to compete with United on the pitch.”

but for the last 3yrs we have been competing with them, or no?

  49. PaddyV91

Wallace what about 4 seasons ago when they won the league?? Yes they have struggled in recent seasons but at least they are showing ambition by trying to sign the best players. We haven’t challenged for the league since 2004. 12 years ago!

  50. STV

    Emirates

“Arsenal declined to buy Fabregas because his best role is as an attacking midfielder and Ozil was bought the previous season to play in that position”

Yet in Chelsea he played along with Matic, behind midfield trio namely Hazard Oscar and Willain/Mata as a central midfielder.

Similar role he played in Barca too after his first year. Xavi Segio Fabregas formed their mid Iniesta played furthur up.

And, He played in that role lots of time at Arsenal.

He started his career in that role and played most in his career too..

If Wenger couldn’t figure out a way to accomodate a way to include both Fabregas and Ozil in a team you’ll have to question his ability.

The truth is he don’t want to spend on another midfielder and couldn’t harm the progress of Ramsey and Wilshere. A bad decision that was..

  51. PaddyV91

“Arsenal declined to buy Fabregas because his best role is as an attacking midfielder and Ozil was bought the previous season to play in that position.Frankly there are/were other positions in our team, which were a priority”.

Emirates that was a cop out. Fab doesn’t play AM with Chelsea. He is just as comfortable in a deeper role. You can’t tell me he wouldn’t have improved us. We had the money to buy back but Wenger said no…

  52. Mysticleaves

    STV

It Wasn’t a bad decision. Ramsey had his best season or so, Ozil was the “best creator”, we had Santi. Our team was full.

If you look at it any other way then you would be doing so in hindsight.

  53. STV

Mystic in a hindsight you’re right,

But given our Injury record, the unreliability of Wilshere, lack of credible options at midfield ( remember we were so desperate even signed injured Kallstorm), and considering how much important Fabregas had been for us, it was a bad decision imo.

  54. PaddyV91

Mysticleaves a title winning team has to have a good squad not just the first 11 you can’t argue he shouldn’t have signed Fab cause we had Ramsey & Caz playing well. Wenger has always been afraid of players being upset by not starting. A manager with balls buys Fab back and let’s him Santi & Rambo fight it out for the 2 CM spots

  55. LONDONGOONER

Our strikers are giroud welbeck and sanago

Dare I say it, it’s worse than a few years ago when we had bendtner chamack adebayor

Can you imagine being welbeck having another year at home on £80,000 a week!

He’s not good enough to get in any of the top 6 teams yet we have him.

Sanago, couldn’t get a game at Ajax, then struggled at charlton, yet he’s still at the club

Giroud, any striker for a top four club in any league around Europe, when they go 15? PL games with out a goal? That’s not good enough, I would understand if our midfield was garbage, but we’ve got Ozil behind him!! You and I could Nick 10goals a season with Ozil feeding us!!

I would go hell for leather for aubamayang, an failing that id go lukaku..

    Won’t happen tho

We will make top four though..

    1. City

No, we haven’t been competing in the last 3 years, neither have they. The difference between them and us? They will compete again this year, we will not.

    2012/13

    Arsenal 1-1 United

Iwobi is stil just a prospect that should not be burdened unduly with unrealistic expectations expectations.

That said, Iwobi has to be considered ahead of Walcott and Oxlade.
That’s the sad state of affairs we find ourselves in: the youthful prospect is still ahead of the doofus that collectively earn £250k weekly.

  58. Arsenal2174

So Arsenal will not entertain selling Giroud it’s hands off apparently. But according to Juve we were going to possibly sell Sanchez for $34 mill + . Yes typical Wenger sell one of the only two world class players we have and keep the donkey. I think or transfers are done we will be fighting for 4th come the end of this season and 80% of the supporters will be singing “One Wenger”

Juventus are real l clowns, aren’t they.

United have won more stuff than us in the last 10 years.
They haven’t been afraid of trying, even if those attempts end up in busts.

They are s a bigger draw even without CL. That difference is heightened by Mourhino’s presence at United now. You just know he’s going to win 1-2 domestic cups and at least one league trophy before his ego burns down the club leading to his exit.
We would have to pay a premium to beat them to a player.

  64. Champagne charlie

    Paddy

“could say the same about Chelsea or Man City. Any ambitious player would 100% choose them over us and that should not be the case”

How can you come out with nonsense like that? Who is invariably interested in certain players is often matter of debate, plus we’ve added Ozil, Alexis, Cech, Xhaka the last few seasons and you suggest we can’t buy anyone of note. OK then..

Are you one of those who say nobody was in for these players? Would seem fitting with your current mantra.

Do you rate the Michy guy Chelsea just paid 33mil for? I don’t see who was after him except Palace and West Ham but he’s being touted as one missed. Double standards as ever

  65. freddylekgunner

Mou at Utd am still not sure how that will pan out. Managing Utd is a different ball game coupled with players like Rooney there and their average squad before this summer. The PL is also more competitive than ever and with the amount of cash he’ll spend he’ll face instant backlash from the fans if things doesn’t go so well as most utd fans are skeptical of his appointment. He’ll try his best to win though unlike what we have.

  66. PaddyV91

    Champagne
I never said we couldn’t sign anyone of note I said given a choice any top player with ambition will join Chelsea/Utd/City given a choice between us and them because they will challenge we will not. You can’t argue with that. We got Xhaka because none of the other top clubs put an offer in. You can’t honestly tell me Cech is top class. And Ozil was sold a load of lies that things would change and we would start challenging for major honours. He is regretting his decision to come to us now I suspect

  67. Moray

Dissenter; they. They ask for >£100 million for Pogba yet they only offered £34 million for Sanchez.

That is good business. We seem to be doing the opposite with Sanchez, which makes me worried.

  68. Ivan

Im a bit curious why many posters here say that we need creative playmaking winger. Wouldnt be better to have 2 proper wingers bombing from wings and leave ozil and rest of our midfield to do the playmaking?

  69. Wallace

    Paddy

“We got Xhaka because none of the other top clubs put an offer in. You can’t honestly tell me Cech is top class. And Ozil was sold a load of lies that things would change and we would start challenging for major honours.”

just throwing it out there, maybe they didn’t put an offer in because they knew he wanted to come to us?

and hilarious what one season at Arsenal has done for Cech’s rep.

  70. freddylekgunner

For me the PL is going to be very interesting next season and one thing you can bet your house on is Arsenal again finishing in the top 4 no matter how good or bad this Sumner’s transfers is (not that I don’t want more but that’s the current situation) that leaves Chelsea, City, Utd, Spuds, Leceister, and maybe Liverpool, Everton, and West Ham for the other 3 spots. Surely it’s going to be an epic next season.

  71. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

Jose will continue the strangle hold over Wenger…

You do wonder does Wenger have the appetite for this anymore ,?

I personally think the longer he stays the quicker we will decline leaving it nearly impossible for the new man to rebuild yo where we once were.

  72. Wallace

    freddy

“Surely it’s going to be an epic next season.”

yeah, should be fascinating. I can’t recall a time when there have been so many teams that might challenge.

  73. PaddyV91

    Wallace

Hate to break it to you Wallace but we need a lot more than a goalscorer to compete. We also need a CB, RW & new manager before we even think about conpeting

  74. Bermy boy

Any top player coming to us have dreams of playing for the “Invincibles”,sad to say the poor deluded souls are doing a Rip Van Winkle in my opinion. I’m happy for Sanchez and his achievements after the shit he’s had to endure in Wengerville.

  75. freddylekgunner

I don’t believe that shit that players doesn’t want to come to Arsenal because of our ambition. Currently Arsenal don’t have any player on 200k a week wages and are willing to pay that to a player anytime soon, that leaves us at at a disadvantage against the likes of City, Manures and Chelsea for a new WC players IMO

  76. Marc

    Freddy

I can see Arsenal dropping out of the top 4 this season unless we add at least a couple of quality players.

The era of Wenger is going to end in a car crash of a season.

  77. Cesc Appeal

    Have hope, this sounds good:

“I have one more year to go with Arsenal and I have been with them for a long time. I have always respected all my contacts [throughout my career] and will continue to do that.

“What will I do after that? Honestly, I don’t know.”

Obviously you cannot put it past Arsenal to do something slimy and sly and slip a new deal in there, doubtless the board want Wenger to stay, but that sounds good, there’s a finality in those words, ‘I have one more year to go with Arsenal,’ not ‘as it stands,’ ‘right now it seems’ very definite statement.

  78. Wallace

    RSPC Arsenal

I would like us to sign a dominating CB, but the defenders we have are good enough. as C Charlie has said, it’s the way we play that exposes them.

Hayden, Crowley & Toral all look as though they’re either getting loaned or sold this summer. surprised with Toral, thought he’d have a good chance of making the squad this year.

  79. Marc

    Cesc

Whilst I think Wenger is out of touch with the modern game I’m positive he knows that you can’t announce that you’re retiring a season before it happens. I think he’ll just bow out at the end of a season – it’s just which one!

  80. Relieable Sauce

If Ozil or Sanchez have any ambition – and it seems fairly clear they do – they will look to move when the first opportunity arises.
Seems like Sanchez is try to force a move (fair play to him) so is highly unlikely to sign an extension. Juve are in a good position to get a deal done, turning the screw nicely with the low valuations at the start of the TW, for an unsettled player.

What was it Sanchez said after we one the FA cup? – about it not being enough.

Ozil might have to wait it out and run down his contract if the right suitors arent sufficiently interested this summer.
I feel Ozil is more at ease with the relaxed, no pressure enviroment and also would be more selective in what club he would consider joining.

Who knows. We shouldnt have to wait too long though to at least get an idea.

  81. PaddyV91

“I would like us to sign a dominating CB, but the defenders we have are good enough”….are you serious Wallace?? You think Per & Chambers are good enough??? You re more deluded than I thought

  82. Cesc Appeal

    Marc

I agree, I just think that sounds hopeful for all of us who want him gone, he was very definitive about Arsenal, he has one season left, as I say, nothing added to that statement like ‘right now’ or ‘as of now I will be leaving Arsenal’ etc.

I agree a manager cannot come out an announce he’s going, that’s why I did not understand City’s approach last season, sure grab Guardiola, you’re an idiot if you don’t, but try to keep in under wraps.

We are in a weird situation though, a great deal of uncertainty around the club now.

I have a feeling this is either going to be a season that is a glorious send off for Wenger, or is a total disaster and the atmosphere will turn poisonous, I’m not sure which one.

When Xhaka dropped early I really thought Wenger was viewing this as his last chance, his chance to go out on a high and he was going to take advantage of Guardiola, Mourinho and Conte not being in the job yet to grab his transfers targets before they started and settle in.

Same old though. At the very least you can say for Wenger, the principles he’s lived by he’s willing to die by, so that is something, just wish it was a personal thing for him…not involving the football club I love.

  83. Jeff

    Reliable,

I find that it’s not so much comprehension but denial. They suffer from a psychological barrier that allows them to go so far but no farther. It’s irrational – bit like the opposite of a phobia where people can’t help being afraid of a threat that is not real – the opposite of which is admiring a quality that is not real.

  84. TallestTiz

So, we all rant but no one seems to havecan idea of who we should go for.

Personally, I would offload Walcott to china or where ever, I’d keep Ox, Campbell, and send Iwobi on loan to a spanish team, loan Chambers out to a bottom team or topcl championship / league one team.
If debuchy goes, I sign the right back from Sporting Gijon.

Then spend £70 million on Lacazette and Mahrez.
A front three of Sanchez – Lacazette- Mahrez underpinned by Ozil with a base of Xhaka/Coq and Santi/Rambo. That would be some team

  85. TallestTiz

The above would definitely score goals.
Better that waiting aimlessly on madrid to offer us Morata for peanuts when they are actually insanely asking for £65million.
I would also replace chambers while relegating Per to the bench by Using the french connection to lure Sakho away from the dippers, Liverpool.

  86. LONDONGOONER

Lacazette is just a remy mk2

We are Arsenal! Why don’t we get the big strikers! Money talks that’s a fact

  87. Mark

    @naja ..
It’s not so hard to figure out, as AW does the same thing year in year out! What’s happening with our TW then ? Or is there nobody out there who can improve this squad ??
It’s like groundhog day! We start off with hopes, only for the same shit different year to happen. I’m sure deep down a lot of posters here would like to be wrong, for the best of the club. Unfortunately with Wenger at the helm, again this looks unlikely to happen.

Fans are tired of it, and there is absolutely no reason for us not to embrace change. We have nothing to lose, as we are not winning. What is the plan for the team? Why doesn’t the great AW spell it out at the end of the season. As many managers do? Ask yourself Why is this? ?
Cos he doesn’t have a clue.

  88. Jeff

    Mark,

The plan is very simple. It is to eke out another year at Arsenal, string the fans along ,finish in CL places and claim progress is being made. Job done.

  89. Joe

your predictions – remember 5mins before kick off against Man Utd last October when you predicted a disappearing act from Ozil? 20 mins later we were 3-0 up and Ozil had made the first and scored the second. disappearing act…lol

    Wallace
    Remember all your predictions.

    Always wrong

Id hold up before you start laughing at other people’s wrong predictions

“We will not finish double digits behind Leicester” haha.

“We will compete for the title ” haha

  90. Joe

    Wallace

    Vardy chose Leicester over us.

Are Leicester one of the biggest clubs in the world

It’s ok. Wallace will say we almost signed mkhit in a few years as some sort of badge of honour for wenger

  91. STV

Wenger desperately ‘not ruling out’ England job after current contract basically sending ‘come, get me’ message to the board!! What a joke. I knew he’d say like this..

  92. TallestTiz

Either we go for Lacazette and a goal scoring right winger like Mahrez or we go all out for Lukaku and hope his finishing ability to improve quick

  93. STV

If I were the chairman, I’d offer him new 3 year deal with double the amount he’s at and once he’s signed, I’ll fire him the next day( with no golden shakehands obviously) and ban him from Arsenal for the rest of his life..

Maybe I am best what I am now.

  94. Joe

    Wallace

United would have finished above us with just signing Jose.

The money they’ve spent after will
Just make the point difference in the double digits

Pep, Jose and Conte alone will
Be more than enough signings for those teams to finish well above us.

My prediction. Please copy and keep
    It for further reference
