Wenger tempering expectation with rules of thumb that consistently fail him

Ok, so not much to talk about… just a lot of nothing going on. For those of you confident of a great summer, high fives all round. For those of you who know the pattern we normally follow, look at what’s going on now…

“We’ve already bought one player — Xhaka — from Monchengladbach,””So we’ve bought one midfielder and we’re still

“So we’ve bought one midfielder and we’re still on the market to buy one or two more players. But it is not easy.

“It is not just buying. We also have to keep a good balance. If you buy too many players you destabilise your team. So three is the maximum.”

It’s almost like our end of the season heroics have convinced Wenger that three more players is all he needs to compete with the best in Europe.

Destabilising a team that didn’t win shouldn’t be an issue. Destabilising a team flunked hard, really, is what you should be doing. I don’t for the life of me understand how he’s looking at that squad and firstly, not recognising that he lost 3 players on big wages, so they need replacing. Then secondly, not recognising that he didn’t have the quality to handle key injuries to players. So the squad wasn’t big enough in the first place. He never learns.

We weren’t a Xhaka from the title last year. Maybe we were a Vardy away, but that was in a fluke year… we don’t need to tweak. We need to blast at the squad to make it better. Move Theo on. Move Gibbs on. Replace Cazorla or at least bring in someone who can do the things he can. Think about moving on Chambo and think about how badly he flunked. Think about the fact Giroud isn’t good enough and Danny Welbeck is out for a year.

When you factor all that in, tell me how Wenger gets to three players?

I mean, that’s before considering we have two centre backs in their thirties and two that really aren’t cutting the mustard.

Where is the evidence that 3 players is about the max a squad can handle? It just feels like another one of those stupid mantras Wenger spouts because he’s not willing to challenge his own thinking… I mean, what exactly has the ‘no more than 3 players’ rule done for Wenger over the past 12 years? Not much. It’s like his secret recipe for failure.

Players need to be looking at Arsenal thinking they’re serious about making something happen. That’s what they’ll be thinking when they look at Liverpool, City and United. Becuase they have managers who want to win and want to evolve.

Mikki is looking at United, because Mourinho. Vardy is holding out, because, what? Money? Waiting on a better offer?

Considering how good Wenger is at marketing failure, he’s not very good at marketing an exciting project. He should be ripping up trees to make this squad something spectacular. Not tempering expectation…

Anyway, it is what it is. He is what he is. Let’s hope they get moving on the transfer front. We’re nearly in July.

HAVE A GOOD DAY.

What exactly are you arguing about ?? As Much as we hate messi and ronaldo, they are among the best players in the world at the moment. And you nor Wenger can change that !!

Fair enough. But thats one player in how many wc.. I don’t want to do the maths on that one mate… I doubt anyone will be breaking the 10 goal mark anytime soon !!

Yeah I think you’re right, use to be the same for United for a while.

But I really, really do not like Busquets, or Pique, or Alba…basically the Barcelona team.

    Though I do like Rakitic.

I already knew I was able to watch another game in a small window ( PIP ) but I just realised it was possible to split the screen in 2

Bet you were happy and excited and confused at the same time. Kind of like the first time a kid ejaculates 🙂

  5. STV

    gonsterous,

A Hungarian player too scored 11 goals and Gerd Muller as well.

But you’re right. It’s be extremely hard to break those records ever..

  6. gonsterous

I must say the pinot noir is going right through me.. should not have drunk that much at the company’s dinner !!:)

    Exactly, !

Kopa joined Real after losing in the 1st European final in 1956.
Reims managed to reach the final again the following year but lost v Madrid ( again ) and we had to wait till ’75 for St- Etienne to reach the final and till 1993 to finally win it with Marseille.

The French have lost so many European finals it’s not even funny…

  8. naijagunner

Funny how the buzz went from expecting Vardy and Mikky to basically nothing….the silence is deafening on the Arsenal transfer front

Btw there is the guy on twitter…@TheAFCMuzzle…does he by any chance comment here ?

  9. STV

Cesc that Barca team have many unpleasant characters. I mean they are so full of themselves. They think they are a unique club with different set of rules..

OK may be I am getting jealous ;)..

  10. WengerEagle

Yeah has to be said, Karim’s knowledge on French football past and present is unrivalled.

Pity we don’t have a Serie A/Bundesliga/La Liga correspondent too!

  11. crazy gunner

Its ground hog day mate I always said the year that arsenal will challenge for the title will feel different in the transfer window…

But we’v been here before…he’s trying to manage expectation.

I just so wish Wenger will stop trying to manage the fans and start managing the team…becos over the last 12yrs he has failed miserably at both…becos the fans can see through these excuses

  12. Cesc Appeal

That’s what I don’t like, I think it all stems from the Fabregas saga, totally classless.

    @N5

    Lol

The guys goes from super excited to extreme moaning in record time

But he does a great job retweeting Arsenal transfer rumours from every source known to man

Go ahead then, list off some players and fax it over to the club! 😀

Lucas Hernandez of Atletico Madrid will be a huge player for France in a couple of years time.

Still I like reading watching discussing and occasionally playing football but I am no expert 🙂

Watching the Irish Italy game… Irish playing their hearts out…

Very hard done by referee not brave enough to give a stonewall penalty to Ireland. Clearly intimidated by the fact that Italy is a bigger football nation.

Italians getting away with pretty much everything.

  17. Wallace

Spain vs Italy will be fascinating, although the gap in quality between the two sides is so large I just can’t see anything other than a Spanish victory.

still haven’t managed to catch a Croatia game this tournament. have had a soft spot for them ever since the Boban, Prosinecki, Suker, Boksic side. christ that was a talented bunch…

  18. Cesc Appeal

    Wallace

Croatia are very impressive, incredible work rate but also ballers. Modric has been fantastic, Rakitic too, Perisic also has had a good tournament. Considering they were missing quite a few players against Spain as well, very impressed with them.

Very likeable in their style of play and non-c**tish approach to the game…looking at you Spain.

  19. Leedsgunner

    England playing Iceland huh…

Cue English complacency to kick in.

Iceland has nothing to lose… England in great danger of thinking the game is won and underestimating their opponents.

  20. Wallace

    Cesc Appeal

yeah, nothing not to love about Modric. real shame Wenger didn’t think he was robust enough for the PL.

  21. Cesc Appeal

    Wallace

Ugly as the day is long, I mean seriously, looks like a witch from a children’s bedtime story, but one of the most technically gifted players you will see, still have no idea how that 2011/12 Spurs side finished below us.

  22. loyika

Both games are a yawn compared to the earlier games.

In other news did amyone read about the player sent off for breaking wind on Sky Sports (Lol!! Funniest stuff i have ever read)

  23. WengerEagle

    ‘did absolutely nothing tonight.’

He seems very much at his most effective as an impact sub to me, everytime he’s seriously impressed it’s been when he’s come off the bench.

  24. Frost

Have no idea why people complain of insomnia when you could easily watch an Italy match & dose off in seconds

Good point about per an konscliny

Both in the last furlong of their career … In fact per has finished the race…

Gabs ain’t that good Calum ain’t been given a chance an the academy had failed us again….

Still from not having one DM we now have three ?

He is a bizarre manager ?

We in or out tomorrow ?

  26. TitsMcGee

When you factor all that in, tell me how Wenger gets to three players?”

Because he’s looking at it from a top 4 standpoint.

He’s not looking at it from a win the EPL standpoint.

He stopped trying for the EPL/UCL many years ago. He’s in self preservation mode.

  27. TitsMcGee

The last laugh will be on Wenger next season though if he thinks he’s going to mediocre himself to 2nd.

  28. Leedsgunner

Ireland due to play France if it stays like this!!!

It’ll be hilarious to watch TH14 as a pundit during that match as long as he keeps his hands in his pockets! LOL!

Ireland has been the better team tonight!!

As you can imagine, I was seriously conflicted at the time because Henry was my all-time favourite player.

Everyone and their mother over here was calling him a scumbag after the handball and there was I meekly defending him haha.

  30. Marko

Cheers Leeds, we kind of had to qualify though given that Wales, Iceland and Northern Ireland did, didn’t we?

    And Hungary. Who’ve been brilliant.

On me 4th Guinness WE. Can’t be getting fucked up on a Wednesday mate. Have to call in sick to work tomorrow

  31. WengerEagle

Groups have worked out strangely, most of the heavy hitters (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) are in the same half of the draw so we could well possibly get our ‘Final’ in the Semi’s.

The likes of Croatia and even Belgium despite finishing 2nd instead of 1st in the group have a favourable route to the Final.

  32. Ugheisadipshit

    Marko.

    Tomorrow is Thursday haha

I don’t understand why a reporter doesn’t call wenger out when he says this stuff.

If we all know about the trolley dash after 8-2 loss , im sure every reporter does.

There has to be a WOB reporter who hates him as much as we do. Well most of us.

  33. Bermy boy

We already have our signing for the season maybe one or two more teenagers and a squad player for 8 mil and you have our transfer tally wrapped up…..bada bing bada boom.

  34. David Smith

Wenger needs, for the first time in his life, to get rid of his under performing backroom staff and bring in Lollechon, who will surely be discarded by Conti, to work with Cech.
Our keeper has hinted at this enough times, and his performances seem to be deteriorating.
Only a matter of time before Gerry fuckin Peyton does to Cech what he did to the rest of our keepers. Just listen to Szczs words.
Wenger is a big problem, but so are those he maintains at the club.

Ramsey linked to a big money move to United. While I think Wilshere should be the one to go if we got an offer we couldn’t refuse I wouldn’t. Take the money replace with someone like Kante, Danilo/William Carvalho, Weigl or Bazoer of Ajax and we really wouldn’t skip a beat

  37. Leedsgunner

Aaron Ramsey asked ” what’s it like finishing on top of the group ? His reply
” it’s always nice to finish above spurs ”

    Legend.

  38. tunnygriffboy

Ramsey is a bloody good player. We miss his energy when he’s not playing. He gets so much stick it’s unbelievable. He’s still relatively young and his best days are ahead of him. Plus I wouldn’t give anything to Mourinho.

  39. Leedsgunner

    Ramsey to United?

If LVG was still there I could see it happening as I happen to believe Elneny was bought as a Ramsey replacement. However since Maureen and Arsene hate each other Wenger will no doubt give him the short shrift and move on… as he should.

  40. freddylekgunner

I wouldn’t offload Ramsey to Man utd especially with Mou there. He still has it in him to hit that form again. A good offer for Wilshere though we should be selling.

  41. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal and Arsene’s weakness is that he does not anticipate decline or mediocrity in certain members of his squad and there is a reluctance to offload players.

Wenger made a serious error of judgment last summer in not recruiting any
outfield players not least because Welbeck and Wilshire were out with longterm injuries and of course the contracts of both Rosicky and Arteta should not have been renewed.

In January we recruited Elneny who is in my book a squad player rather than first team selection and promoted also to squad Iwobi to cover for Sanchez on
    left wing.

Xhaka has come in and will become almost certainly I first choice central
midfielder considering the transfer fee we have paid for him.

Our remaining priorities this summer must be to replace Mertesacker at CB
since Gabriel is realistically a squad player and buy a striker.

For once the club must focus on doing this and not as they do far too often in
    past leave us short.

Personally I would rather see Arsenal blow our entire transfer budget on these two positions than making wholesale changes to our squad.

  42. Mohap99

Ramsey can go for £1. I don’t care. This dude doesn’t do the basic .. Energy isn’t football. It’s like he was taught how to play football instead of having the natural “football sense”. There are better players with energy like his who have more to offer. He should just go..

  43. tunnygriffboy

Ramsey gets way too much stick. Because he’s ours he’s lambasted. Last season our best form was when Ramsey played on the right as a wide playmaker. Walcott played up top making runs which created space for Alexis.

Ramsey is still relatively young and is still to hit his prime years. To say he is just energy is really unfair as there’s a lot more to his game than that.

The best he’s played is when Arteta played along side him, someone who couldbuild attacks from the back. Hopefully Xhaka will be able to do that for us.

I don’t understand why you would get rid of a really good player when we need a strong squad. Our midfield options are very good at the moment, it has agood balance.

    Emirates

I would rather two more starters for next season rather than 3 or 4 middle of the road players

  44. Wallace

    tunny

I think Ramsey’s a great player. just don’t think the more attack-minded Ramsey of the last two seasons is a good fit for this side, and don’t think he’s keen on the wide-right role.

  45. Black Hei

    Wallace

Wenger placing Ramsey on the right has to do with a lot of factors.

First is his tendency to lose possession with backheels and poor passes. It is easier to accommodate his short comings out wide, like Sanchez.

Second, Ramsey does has good technique despite the constant bashing. AND he is actually comfortable out wide after Wenger made him play out wide in the early days. He is quite 2 footed and he has good energy levels.

Thrid, by tucking inwards, he allows Bellerin space to rampage up. It also allows him to find space between lines and further shore up the mid.

Sure he can’t dribble his opponent or go wide, but that is only a problem if you play Giroud. Get someone mobile up front and Ramsey becomes very suitable out wide.

Too bad he can’t understand this.

  46. Emiratesstroller

I would not offload Ramsey, because he has a good engine. However, his main
weakness is that he fails to use that energy in a disciplined and constructive way.

Unlike many of the other British players in our squad there is a role for him to play in the team/squad, but he does need to improve his overall performance and start scoring more goals.

I would certainly not sell him to Man Utd or any of our other competitors. Frankly the likelihood of that happening is almost zero.

  47. Wallace

    Black Hei

it’s not his effectiveness out wide that bothers me. I think he could be excellent there, i just don’t think he fancies it, and at this point might be wondering if he might be better off moving to a side who will play him centrally.

  48. Dissenter

Its official; “Leicester City have today (Thursday) agreed with the representatives of Jamie Vardy to extend the England international’s contract with the Premier League champions for a further four years.

    No loss here
We should have kicked his puny ass out publicly after he dithered and essentially used Arsenal to leverage his wage demands at Leicesger.

  49. Marko

I actually like Ramsey but 40-50 million? And with Kante available for 20 million on top of not being able to ever really play Ramsey in his most effective position (AM) I’d sell. But I’d prefer Wilshere gone tbh. He’s definitely a freeloader

  50. Thank you and goodnight

How shit a manager must you be that a 29 yr old journeyman pro turns you down. Ha ha ha ha. In wenger we trust

  51. reality check

Love the club, hate the club, love the fans, hate the fans (giroud cupping his ear) play good, play bad, try hard (sanchez), walk about (Feo). Makes no difference. They still get paid. Trophies no trophies. So what. They still get paid. They still get played.

There’s no accountability or consequences at Arsenal. Saying Ramsey has it in him to be a great player.. well where’s the incentive? Why does he have to become a great player?

Simple question. What happens if Ramsey doesn’t improve? What will happen if he stays exactly as he is right now. Wenger loves him as he is. He’s Wales’s No.10

    He’s made it!

Why does Ramsey have to Improve?
