Summer slipping away? | Wenger not first choice anymore

Welcome. One and all. To today’s, Le Grove blog.

So e’rryone losing their damn minds over this Mikki Agent comment in the papers. His agent, in the process of organising a move to Old Trafford for Ibra, is now touting the Dortmund winger… insisting they’d welcome a move to Old Trafford.

Now, I don’t know what’s going on… all I know is that a few weeks ago, he was very much interested in Arsenal and Arsenal have been interested in him for a while.

Things change. That is life people. I’m sorry this is how you found out.

However, this could be many things, so don’t panic. It could be Raiola’s way of sparking a bidding war. It could be him trying to get Arsenal to push harder to get his client released from the hell hole that is the Dortmund dressing room.

… or it could be that working under Mourinho is likely to foster more trophies. Let’s be fair here, who is betting on Wenger beating Klopp, Pep and Mourinho to silverware next year?

Things we have in our favour…

  • Mikki is a self-proclaimed Arsenal fan
  • He likes playing in teams that play great football. He won’t get that at United
  • London is WAY better than Manchester. Sorry people, it just is.
  • There’s no interest from United. If there was, his agent wouldn’t be encouraging interest.

… but hey, let’s not put it past United to do us over on a transfer. Mikki is a Jose type player. Disciplined, productive and hardworking.

I’m starting to get the summer sweats over here… feels like plan A is seeping down the same toilet we head down every summer. This time, not for lack of ambition, but because working under Arsene Wenger just isn’t that appealing… or at least, it’s not as appealing as it is to work under other managers.

Wenger is the architect of that. He’s just not the draw his was in the early 2000s.

Still, keep the faith until the ink is dried on a contract. Football is a weird beast and the politics are complicated.

Right, have a great day!

  1. Cesc Appeal

Both Walker and Rose were good I thought, Alli had a spotty game, Dier was decent defensively but didn’t have much to do on that end, his distribution was very poor though.

    Kane was anonymous.

I don’t want Woy as manager, but have to give him credit for those early substitutes, two changes and two goals for both.

  2. Wallace

not sure why Hodgson’s getting so much flak. we’ve dominated the two games, and he was ballsy with his subs today.

  3. Cesc Appeal

    RP

Maybe, with respect to Wales today would have been the day to try that, their game seems to be defend for your life and look to Bale. Robson-Kanu for example, their ST, had a good game, had zero attempts.

Could and maybe should have tried something today…see how Slovakia goes and maybe attempt some sort of shift in game, because it gets serious after that.

  4. reality check

    Not with Welbz Cesc.. unfortunately.

Marko, I agree. This wasn’t some tactical genius from Roy. He had to go all out attack. And hope for the best. He had no choice a draw wasn’t good enough. Would have felt like a loss.

So the fact he did go all out. Yeah we have to applaud it.

The question mark over Roys head now is.. who starts upfront next game?

  5. MidwestGun

    Bamford-
I mean he’ s well spoken and all.. but I prefer retired players. Current players have to be guarded. and really aren’t that interesting… I do like Ballack,

  6. loyika

Lol at BBC – England beat Wales in thriller!?

Which match were they watching exactly?

Unless they were alluding to the players playing like the Zombies in MJ’s “Thriller” that is.

If this match can be considered a “Thriller” by the BBC one shudders to think what words they would use to describe the other games that feature other real (European) footie teams?

Thriller indeed. As for Wale? You can’t keep relying on Gareth Bale (just like Portugal can’t keep relying on CR7) Other teams members need to pull their socks up to contribute more (Ramsey here’s looking at you) this is a once in a life time achievement to get to the Euros one would think they would sweat blood and guts out in the field to go as far as they can at all costs (or are they just not that really a good footie team and only there to make up the number? I hope they beat Russia and go through to the next round)

  7. Alexanderhenry

    Bamford

Apart from Bale and Ramsey, every single wales player is inferior to england’s. As a result, england had total control of the game. It was always going to be that way.
Therefore, yes Ramsey was a ‘defensive workhorse’. However, the few moments of pressure, composure and threat from wales came through him. He was up against it, and played well- not spectacularly- but well, and better than Ali and Dier.

  8. Marko

Yeah I think Roy still has question marks over him cause they should of had 6 from 6 and just about got 4 points. Wales and Russia particularly are really poor teams. Russia are fucking dire if we’re honest. I just don’t think we’ve seen anything so far to suggest England can pull off a shock. Beinteresting to see if he finally drops Sterling and Kane next game. I’d honestly think about dropping Rooney cause the occasional long pass is masking how pointless it is having him in the team. He comes so deep at times to allow Alli to go forward why not just start with an actual midfielder to allow Alli to play in his natural position cause I’m telling you Rooney is and never will be an effective AM maybe a CM but no AM. He doesn’t have the ability

  9. Romford Ozil Pele

CA, that was always gonna be Wales’ plan. They were gonna allow us to have more of the ball so we needed to be more innovative in possession.

Just need a point now to get through which we should get but our football is all over the shop which we’ll need to be addressed when we play the better teams. If we had good wide players like France I’d go 433 but we need to take the initiative in games right now so need better ball players.

Rooney has been ok but really and truthfully he’s not a midfielder and we need someone who goes long and short and can travel distances with the ball because right now our game is too predictable. Loads of the ball but creating nothing.

  10. Wallace

    Romford

see that bit with Rashford coming in from the wing when he did 5 stepovers in about 0.003 of a second? I think he’s going to be terrifying. would be criminal if Mourinho doesn’t give him some chances next season.

  11. Romford Ozil Pele

Wallace, can’t lie I was a bit perplexed England bringing on rashford considering we needed to win the game and was having pointless possession. I get we were going for broke so luckily it’s a gamble that paid off and showed why we took 5 strikers. That said I am a big rashford fan, he seems so u fazed. Has the ability to ghost past players very easily. Great talent and I agree it’d be silly for Mourinho to exclude him next season. Great talent

  12. salparadisenyc

Man that was pretty dire stuff.
Then Sturridges goal dance took it to the next level.

    Agree Walker was MOTM.

Roy needs to figure out his most effective starting XI, think Wilshire should be in there regardless of contributing zero this season. Nobody controlling tempo in the mid.

  13. Relieable Sauce

Dier is the 1st CM name on the teamsheet in this system.

Lallana and Vardy/Sturridge backed-up by Rose and Walker should be effective in the 433 (3?? when dominating).
Seeing how Italy condensed play the other day – and with the players they have – was exceptional.
If England could play that way (and they have the players), theyd be quite a force.

  14. raptora

Sturridge’s impact was so obvious because there was finally someone who could make stuff happen. Who is even remotely creative. Rooney and Alli did nothing to be the offensive, creative spark that England need so bad. Wilshere should be a starter, no wonder he was chosen MOTM in six out of seven games in the qualifiers. It is so obvious that the possession of the first and second game of England on this Euro means shite in the end, because there is no one who can translate this possession into creating clear cut chances.

  15. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

With Rooney England are fitting a square peg into a round hole..,

Either Rooney or alli have to give an the smart money on Rooney to go ,
    Diet alli, jack Henderson
    Vardy Sturridge up front

  16. Romford Ozil Pele

“Wilshere should be a starter, no wonder he was chosen MOTM in six out of seven games in the qualifiers. It is so obvious that the possession of the first and second game of England on this Euro means shite in the end, because there is no one who can translate this possession into creating clear cut chances.”

Agreed. Always fantastic when England win but it was scary how we created nothing bar the goals. Lacking any form of cohesion. Too many Spurs players

  17. Cesc Appeal

    RP

Maybe a 4-3-3 still, drop Rooney, Dier, Wilshere and Alli in the centre, then Lallana, Sturridge and Vardy/Kane beyond?

  18. Romford Ozil Pele

CA, could do. My only gripe is that I don’t like seeing strikers wide. The only guy I see it play it well for England all the time is Welbeck. Knows when to hold his run, link play and then go in behind. Certainly Sturridge needs to start though. So much flair.

  19. Frost

“not sure why Hodgson’s getting so much flak”

Cuz he’s Still playing his favorites & players who are horrendously out of form. That’s why. Russia have one of the worst squads in this tournament, Wales are abit better with Bale, but honestly non should be giving England any problems whatsoever.

  20. Dissenter

    England are dire. really dismal.
You really need to get a manager who will play players regardless of name to forge a team.

Hodgson is too fazed by players who play for the bigger clubs. Why is he still starting Sterling?

  21. Bamford10

    Cesc

I still think a 4-4-2 diamond is the way to go. First, because you want both Sturridge and Vardy playing through the center, not wide. And second, because England don’t really have good wide players.

    I’d go with this:

    ____________Hart
    Walk___Cahi___Smll___Rose
    ____________Dier
    ______Lallana____Alli
    ___________Rooney
    ____Sturridge_____Vardy

    This would allow:
    – both Walker and Rose to get forward down the wings
    – Rooney, Sturridge & Vardy to combine up front
    – Lallana and Alli to move the ball from your 18 to their 18

  22. salparadisenyc

Roy has the team there, he just needs to be more ruthless in his selection.
Kane, Sterling and Ali all need the bench, playing the occasion which is never good.

Personally think Rooney’s been decent he may be a square peg to round hole but he’s managing the shave the corners a bit.

Dier pinning the mid w/ Wilshire the creative hub alongside Rooney.
Front three of Lallana, Sturridge and Arsenal’s Vardy.

  23. Romford Ozil Pele

Bamford I’d be getting Wilshere in there bro. There’s nobody to transition from defence to attack. Who builds the play? Who’s the main creator of chances? Alli is good but he’s more a lampard type who ghosts into the box rather than creates. Rooney has been ok but if prefer Alli or Lallana there with Wilshere building next to Alli.

  24. Joe

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: I have considered signing West Ham’s Dimitri Payet

Wenger said: “Yes. Often. Very often, I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career. (Signing Payet)

“And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.

“I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded!”

Does this man have a clue?

  25. Bamford10

    Reliable

I like Jack, but as I said earlier, I think he’s still a little rickety and I don’t think he should be preferred to Rooney, Alli or Lallana.

    Romford & Sal

I don’t see any scenario — barring late in a game — where Rooney is not in the XI. Not to mention he’s one of your most intelligent, experienced and quality players. Did you catch the play on the top of the box when Sturridge played it to him and he let it pass through his legs in order to set up a shot? That was class.

I might sub him out after 65 minutes, but I just don’t see him not in the starting XI.

  26. Bamford10

    ROP

If you want Jack in there, you might do this:

    ____________Hart
    Walk___Cahi___Smll___Rose
    ____________Dier
    ______Lallana____Jack
    ___________Rooney
    ____Sturridge_____Vardy

  27. ADKB

    Joe:

Isn’t it becoming predictable and laughable how Wenger responds to questions about players that seem to stand out? He’s always going ‘I tried to sign that one …. I almost signed that one …’

  28. salparadisenyc

Roy will probably plod along with the exact lineup he started w/ today.

The Rashford sub was pretty bizarre for me, like he had pregame plan and went with it instead of reacting to events happening on pitch.

  29. Ishola70

    Thoroughly deserved win for England.

Hart though is so over-rated as a keeper. He’s been getting away with goalkeeping mistakes for a while now for Man City and a massive mistake was coming for him and there will be more to come.

    Rashford look very promising.

Lots for Woy to think about because although his subs proved match winners at half time the questions will be asked about him getting his starting line-up wrong.

  30. Cesc Appeal

Sell Giroud, £50 Million for Vardy and Sturridge?

Not saying likely, but would you, given the choice?

  31. Ishola70

Is Vardy all of sudden seen as a good signing now by the majority on here because he scored a tap-in today? 😉

  32. Ishola70

Gotta be said the Spuds right back has been one of England’s most positive players in both matches.

Not massive quality but very willing.

  33. ADKB

I was surprised at the substitutions made by Roy, bringing on Vardy, Sturridge and Rashford . Strange but bold line-up at the end.

  34. Wallace

I think the 24 goals in 36 games during the season has also been factored in. certainly at 20m he’s looking a lot better value right now than a 45m Morata or a 60m Lukaku….to me anyway.

  35. Joe

    Wallace

How’s he done the previous 5 seasons??

  36. Redtruth

I blame Bergkamp for Wenger’s longevity as i suspect Dein’s signing of Wenger was a favour and temporary until Bergkamp’s genius on the ball intervention changed the course of history…

  37. Leedsgunner

Now Wenger says he tried to sign Payet for Arsenal… funny he only says that when they succeed.

Who cares if you tried? The reality is you didn’t.

Concentrate on getting this transfer window right instead of telling us about the players you tried to sign.

  38. Ishola70

    Wallace:
”I think the 24 goals in 36 games during the season has also been factored in. certainly at 20m he’s looking a lot better value right now than a 45m Morata or a 60m Lukaku….to me anyway.”

Amazing what a goal does though on the big stage to maybe change people’s opinions eh.

I’d start him over Kane now and see how he goes. I was for him starting over Kane in the first match against the Russians.

Of course Sterling shouldn’t get a sniff any more in the first XI. Perhaps as a late sub. As someone else said like having a 7 yea old girl in the team.

  39. salparadisenyc

    Leeds

Please tell me Wenger didn’t say that regarding Payet?
Last summer we debated Payet with some calling him shit.. I remember it well.
    Insane.

  40. Redtruth

When assessing Giroud’s goal stats one must factor in the importance of the game and the opposition faced also the type of goals scored and when the goals have been scored.

you think each season carries equal weight?

5 seasons ago van Persie was scoring 30 odd goals for us. would you want us re-signing him now?

  44. salparadisenyc

    Sauce

Thats what i’m hoping comes to Woy in a middle of night epiphany, like a bolt of lighting.

    “Ive seen the light Gov”

    Mad mad world out there.

  45. Joe

Andy Johnson scored 21 goals in a season too.

In a proper system vardy would be great

He will not score more than 10-15 at Arsenal.

  46. Joe

    Wallace

    Great comparison you muppet.

Andy Johnson is a better comparison.

Vardywill be 30. Had one good season
You really think he is going to get better or stay at the same level? With wenger as his manager.

    Not a fucken chance

Any wager you want to make Wallace about how vardy will do with us I’m
    Game.

    Make your bwt

  47. Joe

    Rvp is 34 years old

You really are an idiot aren’t you Wallace

Vardy was not doing anything in his prime years. Has one good season in a prefect Storm and you think he will continues to score 20 plus under wenger.

    Ha

  48. Wallace

“Vardy was not doing anything in his prime years. Has one good season in a prefect Storm and you think he will continues to score 20 plus under wenger. Ha.”

who knows what the future holds, joe, but if you’re wanting goals in the premier league right now you’d be mad not to consider Vardy.

  49. Relieable Sauce

    sal

    Nice midfield 😉
I think it could work well, Wilshire and Rooney can both play PM or b2b and with Dier sitting it has nice balance and flexibility.
If we play the right front 3 and press high and defend as a team I think it could work well against the better teams.
Maybe not with 2 gung-ho FBs though, thats why I put Stones in at RB, allows him some creative freedom and adds another creative element with minimal risk.

  50. Relieable Sauce

    Steve

I would like to see Stones playing regular but dont see the current system suiting him just yet.
Not sure 2 attacking FBs will be so wise against top teams even with Dier, Bonucci like passing from the back would be a nice option to have but too risky to play CB now.
Same with Forster, shoulve come in earlier. Too big a call to make now.

  51. karim

Well done England, deserved to win, reminded me of the French last night with those successful half-time substitutions and the late goal.

    Hope both teams qualify.

Ramsey was decent, better than Bale anyhow who was totally anonymous apart from the dodgy free-kick and the dangerous header at the very end.

  52. Relieable Sauce

    Hillwood

I think so, give it a go vs Slovakia to see how it works.
Wouldnt hurt to rest him and/or Rose next match now England have virtually qualified.

  53. MidwestGun

What up? ready for round 2 for me… Basically just hoping for a good match …

Northern Ireland bit of a shocker huh? Id like to see more out of Gotze and Muller.

  54. karim

323 people under arrest since the tournament started !

3 Russians have been sentenced to jail for 2 years, they denied being part of the fights, but they’re recognisable on the Go pro video they sent on YouTube themselves, 45 Russians sent home as well.

A Frenchman from Nice involved in a serious aggression also gets one year.

    To be continued.

    Mid
It appears one of them has very close links with an ultranationalist deputy, the police picked them 150 miles away from Marseille as they were about to leave for more celebrations in Lille.

Khedira starting well. 2 big fouls and a yellow in less than 5 minutes.
    Germany look so powerful …

  57. Carts

    Good win for the boys.

Woy needs be pragmatic against Slovakia.

That game has banana peel written all over it.

Think there’s a good chance both Studge and Vardy start.

  58. MidwestGun

Poland is gonna have to take more chances… or press or something… have they even had the ball past halfway line?

Oops well at least Lewandoski has once.
