How much do Arsenal want it?

Very quick post today because I have things to do!

Big game against Liverpool this evening. Not often we have massive game on a Wednesday these days! Maybe that’s because this isn’t a massive game in the eyes of the Sky people? Or the BT People? Or the foreign TV channels!

Anyway, here are some things I’m looking forward to seeing this evening…

How is Klopp going to play?

He knows he doesn’t have the talent to beat us at our own game, as he said yesterday, he fears our possession football and the counter attack. So is he going to play deep and look to break? Is he going to bulk out his midfield and try and kick us out of the game? Is he going to take advantage of some shady performances from Bellerin of late? His plan will be interesting. He’s going to be revved up. I imagine the Liverpool players coming into the changing room with him half-naked lightly covered by a sheep skin he’s ripped from a freshly slaughtered carcass.

The madman…

How is Wenger going to play?

Does this sort of game require a nullification exercise, or is this a business as usual game for Arsene and his team of enthusiastic tacticians? We have Ozil and Flamini coming back into this mix. Is he going to go all out for pace, maybe resting Giroud? Is he going to let JC continue in the side after a few good games? It’ll be interesting to see if any special thought has gone into this evening. Wenger knows dropped points here could signal the start of a dismal run.

How is Ozil going to play?

This for me is a massive game. This is one of those games we need our star man to carry us. The atmosphere will be big, he’ll probably get a brutalising from Henderson and Lucas. How will he cope. Will he have the eye of the tiger? That’s the big question for me. Can he deal with a wet evening up north…? Post Christmas is where titles are won. It seems like we’re a long way from the end of the road, the excitement of festivities are over and legs start to feel the burn. I hope we have the best Ozil out there this evening!

Are we title contenders?

These are the games that matter. The games where champions in waiting step forward. Are the whole team up for the fight? Do they have the focus? Do they actually believe this is possible.

They should do, they are good enough. It’s all about how much they want it though.

Switch off and we’re back with the rest of them… win, and it’s about proving it all over again at the weekend.

Özil had a quiet game but there was one ridiculous moment where he brought a ball out of the air which was behind him and then crossed for Ramsey but Mignolet intercepted. Would’ve been great. He was getting so pissed off with Theo last night.

  2. Carts

” Who would you have brought on? Ox was a logical sub. Theo and Campbell had covered a lot of ground and were knackered by the 70th minute.”

JC, from what I saw covered more ground than Theo; and made more tackle and drew more fouls. JC, imho, probably covers more ground than he needs too. He’s out there running his bollocks of course he’s taking his opportunity. Theo is far more fitters than JC and could’ve stayed on. After all they were subbed simultaneously.

“Of course Monreal is first choice, he’s been playing as first choice for the best part of two years. Wenger is only saying that to appease Gibbs and make him feel like he’s part of his plans. Any manager would do that. You have to keep your squad players happy”

Nonsense of the highest order and you know it. So you think Wenger persisting with Monreal isn’t dog obvious that he’s #1 choice. Do you think Ancelotti and Benitez publicly stated that neither Danilo or Carvajal are #1 to appease Arbeloa?

“Arteta was also a logical choice to help us try and get a foothold in midfield. Didn’t have great effect but are you really trying to tell me he was the reason we conceded the equaliser?”

If I felt Arteta was directly to blame I wouldn’t be TRYING to tell it. I would say it straight up. I never mince my words and wouldn’t begin to with Arteta. Arteta is so off the pace it’s embarrassing. Surely Gabriel would’ve made more sense as an additional aerial body to counter the inevitable high balls? I mean, this isn’t rocket science. It’s objectivity.

  3. Romford Ozil Pele

Carts, Theo isn’t that fit at all, you could tell he was blowing. And plus he’s shit anyway so was the right decision to bring him off.

What’s nonsense about Monreal? Everybody and his dog knows he’s first choice. If you’ve been watching Arsenal’s games for the last two years you’d know this too. Every manager deals with things differently. He’s obviously trying to make Gibbs feel loved because he doesn’t get much game time. Wenger isn’t gonna belittle his own player is he?

We could maybe have bright Gabriel but that wouldn’t have guaranteed anything. It’s easier to say these things once the result has been decided but if Arteta had come on and we hadn’t conceded nobody would be mentioning bringing on Gabriel.

  4. Samesong

Moving on to Stoke. How do you think we will fare the challenge?
It was a physical battle out there last night.

  5. Romford Ozil Pele

Samesong, if Alexis is fit enough I’d start him and then bring him off around 60. If not go with a similar team. I’d be tempted to start with El Neny though others may disagree. Also get Gabriel in there too. Not too many changes but just freshen it up s bit. Stoke aren’t really that physical anymore but our record there is still pretty shoddy. Fingers crossed we can get a win but it’ll be a tough game. They won’t press as hard as Liverpool though but have good technical forwards so will need to beware.

  6. Black Hei

With you there Coq. This is a game that Firmino decides to show up, and yet we secured a point. I expect Firmino to tank for the next 5 matches. It seems like Firmino is only interested when he plays big teams.

Remember, this is the Liverpool side that smashed City; when Firmino chooses to perform.

Hope our new signing turns out to be the perfect guy to partner Ramsey in the midfield.

  7. Romford Ozil Pele

Would be tempted to go with Ox ahead of Theo if Alexis isn’t fit enough. I know Ox himself has been underwhelming but he needs games if he’s gonna play himself into form. Theo isn’t a midfielder and has awful awareness of what’s round him. Kept getting in Özil’s way last night.

  8. Wallace

“Özil had a quiet game but there was one ridiculous moment where he brought a ball out of the air which was behind him and then crossed for Ramsey”

yeah, that was sweet. it’s just the effortless way he does it. like putting on his boots to take the dog for a walk.

  9. Romford Ozil Pele

Wallace, yeah the game was like a basketball match last night so he rarely received any touches. We kept going long so couldn’t find him as much. Improved slightly in the second half but Theo kept seeming to get in his way.

  10. psymon001

Can anyone ever really partner Ramsey in midfield if Aaron spends all his time upfield trying to be a striker? Elneny might be a solution but someone needs to remind Ramsey he is expected to work on both sides of the ball

  11. Romford Ozil Pele

Yeah L’Oreal and Alexis don’t work but L’Oreal is one of those that you just play when he’s in a hot streak. Seems to have started another scoring run atm so I’d continue with him for now. Alexis probably needs to try and work with L’Oreal a bit more though.

  12. Carts

I said Theo is far more fitter than JC. Come on now, you’re being selective with your comprehension. To even begin implying that JC and Theo were as tired as each other is asinine unless stats can prove that their output were equal. Again, I highly doubt this and if I’m proven wrong then fair enough.

Again, RP, I’m not talk retrospectively, if anything I’m echoing what the vast majority of fans with more than one brain cell would’ve said “why Arteta?”. It was snowing up there, Arteta is slow AF; and shockingly of the pace of things.

This is the problem with Wenger and some apologist: why the fuck do you need a £60k pw LB to feel “loved” when every man and his dog can see that Monreal is the better player. I’d much rather Wenger STFU. If anything it’ll just fill Monreal with unnecessary doubt….unless you’re going to tell me that Wenger side-messaged Monreal to explain that he was only caressing Gibbs’ testicles and meant nothing by it?

Back to my original point, the subs were born out of sentimentality (as was his decisions to award new contracts to Arteta and Theo (not to beat a dead horse)).

Side note: Since, I think Olympiakos, substitutions times have crept up by around 10-15% – meaning Wenger has been doing subs in the later parts of the 70th minutes and even into the mid-80s. Where as before he’d maybe conduct 2 subs between the 68th-75th minutes, then the third in the later 80s.

There’s nothing wrong with this per se, and his subs aren’t always purely defensive, however there seems to be this severe stop-start feeling when certain subs are made.

  13. vicky

I really hope Elneny is a Ramires type of player. We really struggled against Liverpool in the first half, could not withstand their pressing. I hope Elneny is a Ramires/Henderson type of player who can run a lot and have some skills with the ball. Flamini was exposed totally and Ramsey as always was showing indiscipline.

  14. Red&White4life

“Joe Allen 3rd goal. Analysis please?”

Very simple : Cech is far from being as decisive as he was back in his chelscum days.

  15. Nasri's Mouth

Disappointed not to win that, but at 1-0 and 2-1 I thought we might end up with a 3-0 or 4-1 loss.

Alexis, Coq and Caz are important players to us, but that game last night would have perfect for what they add to us. Coq to tackle and break up. Cazorla to control and Alexis to push them back with his energy and runs.

  16. Carts

    Black Hei

Hmmm, I think I’ll have to agree there as you’re discarding one important factor – Firmiho isn’t a CF nor is he a false #9. He’s a pure #10. Klopp doesn’t fancy Benteke at all. And If Origi were fit I think he would’ve started him.

Firmino isn’t running behind defenders and often dropped very deep to get involved, last night. Rodgers had Firmino wide left at one stage and Can RWB. Let that marinade.

  17. Romford Ozil Pele

Carts, Arteta is slow, but what’s new? At the time we were defending so it’s not like his lack of pace was getting exposed was it? Sure, he’s not up to it anymore but people are shitting on him last night with no real basis.

It’s not a case of just shutting up. You’re not gonna praise one player and put down the other are you? Part of managing is man management. So he’s been praising Monreal but will still say stuff like Gibbs has a role to play because he does. Monreal ant play all the time and he’s also 3 years older.

Well yeah of course substitution time will be later. We have no viable options on the bench so the only solution is to keep our better players on for as long as possible, especially if the game isn’t won.

  18. vicky

Anyone who knows Wenger should not be surprised he chose to massage Gibbs’ ego. He calls both Giroud and Theo “world class strikers”. A couple of days ago he said Ospina could displace Cech as our No 1. It’s not even an issue.

  19. Emiratesstroller

    Romford Ozil Pele

I am not someone who criticises habitually our squad.

Quite the reverse I made the case in the summer that we did not need to make
wholesale changes in the transfer window, although I did suggest that we should have replaced at least two out of three of Arteta, Flamini and Rosicky and brought in at least one outfield player.

The most gaping hole is of course the lack of a competent DMF.

However, the dilemma has been for some time that many of our English born
players are either injury prone or simply do not perform at the level of many
    of their foreign counterparts.

In other words if they did not have a ‘British Passport’ would they a] still be on
our books or b] command the transfer fees and wages that we and everyone
    else have to pay?

Balague made that point when he discussed the alleged interest by Barcelona in Ramsey. He suggested that they were not interested in the player, because
of the so-called premium you have to pay for such a player.

As it happens Ramsey is the one British born player I do value not so much because of his talent, but because of his ‘high octane’ performance level.

When it comes to the other players they have shortcomings which cannot be
ignored. Wilshere probably the most talented player is injury prone as is also
case with some of the others.

Walcott, Gibbs and Ox are all talented, but lack football intelligence losing far
too often the ball because too often they make poor decisions. All three could
    learn a lot from Ozil!

Chambers is probably the least naturally gifted English player on our books.
Would we have bought him if he was not British? Probably not and certainly
not for a transfer fee of £16 million.

  20. Nasri's Mouth

3rd goal was down to Kos and Bellerin.

Kos is generally excellent, so can’t really get annoyed with him, and Bellerin’s strength is going forward, rather than defending,we all know that.

  21. Jamal

When was the last time we won at Stoke, they are the ultimate bogey team for us. Expect them to be as pumped up as Liverpool were last night.

  22. Mickey G

I generally watch the highlights of matches on Arsenal player the day after every match. In doing so I am always alarmed by the loose defensive showing in nearly every game. So often there are numerous chances missed by the opposition, that top level teams would rarely spurn. This doesn’t seem to be highlighted in any of the coverage of Arsenal this year. Last night there were more examples. Loose, feeble clearances resulting in goals. Both our center backs looked suspect. Theo had a brain fart for the first. He seemed caught in two minds, between the pass to Ramsey (which was on) or to push the ball past a couple of players and burn them with his pace. It looked a classic caught in two minds situation, doing neither. Mertersacker made a very tame slide at the ball which went nowhere for the second. He is not a ball playing centre half, so he should have put it into the stand. He is a weak link, I’ve said so for years. In my mind, a top central defender would be highest on my shortlist for players in the summer. There were numerous other examples of weak defending and clearances. There is nearly every game. I’m not sure we can win a league title without tightening it up a lot. It’s easy to see how we get the occasional hiding (Bayern and Southampton). If the other team is especially clinical on their day against us it will happen. I think it’s fair to say most of our goals should also have been stopped by a competant defence last night. But Liverpool are having an injury nightmare at the moment. A lot of defenders out. We had our first choice back five out though. Ouch.

  23. Romford Ozil Pele

Emirates, not sure what your point is buddy? Yep a lot of our HG players leave s lot to be desired but we need them to meet the HG quota for one. Also all of them are still 25 and under so it’s not inconceivable that they still might improve. They aren’t the best, no. But as squad players they can all do a job. The only one I really don’t rate from the British pack is Gibbs but he’s been at Arsenal since he was a child so will probably stay here long term unless Wenger wants rid (which he won’t).

  24. Wallace

“I generally watch the highlights of matches on Arsenal player the day after every match. In doing so I am always alarmed by the loose defensive showing in nearly every game.”

they’re called ‘highlights’ for a reason.

  25. Romford Ozil Pele

Mickey, our defence is probably the strongest part of the team. Kos is arguably the best CB in the league. He maybe didn’t have his best game last night but you could count the amount of times both offensively and defensively he’s helped us in recent years. Uber consistent too. Have you seen Monreal? Solid and had Ibe in his pocket all last night. Defence is literally the least of our worries. Can was running riot last night so it was Coquelin we needed more than anything.

  26. Carts

Look Arteta’s presence encourage the wrong idea. Opposition managers would pick up on this, hence why he didn’t start as was peppered last season when we got starched. Again I’m not blaming him, I just can’t see the logic for his inclusion whatsoever!

Well how about this, unless asked directly, how about not mentioning either LB. Notwithstanding, if you praise Monreal – and rightfully so. Just cos you don’t praise Gibbs that doesn’t equate to “putting him down”, ffs. You’re clutching a bit, here. He’s averaging like 10 minutes per games these days. By all means say “Gibbs has a role” as that goes without saying. But to say Monreal isn’t his first choice – publically – is disingenuous; and fills Gibbs with false hopes.

What’s the difference between Bellerin and Monreal’s situation. Didn’t sound like he was trying his utmost to appease Debuchy.

  27. Mickey G

“they’re called ‘highlights’ for a reason.”

Great insight there. My point was the main “highlight” often seems to be loose defending on our part. I fear we forget all about the bad defending when we win. I don’t think we are learning from mistakes, unless we have a shocker.

  28. Nasri's Mouth

Carts: What’s the difference between Bellerin and Monreal’s situation. Didn’t sound like he was trying his utmost to appease Debuchy.

    That’s because Debuchy doesn’t want to stay as a no.2. He’s a lost cause. Gibbs isn’t.

  29. Nasri's Mouth

RP: Defence is literally the least of our worries. Can was running riot last night so it was Coquelin we needed more than anything.

I’d also add that if that for the 1st Liverpool goal, had been Cazorla or Alexis taking the ball out of defence rather than Walcott we’d have been much less likely to concede.

It’s not the defence that’s the problem, it’s the midfield

    We’re not missing

  30. Romford Ozil Pele

Arteta’s presence encourages what idea? This shitting on him is honestly silly. Yes he may have lost his legs but he’s not being asked to start games anymore. He’s coming in for small cameos. He wasn’t the reason we drew yesterday.

The media asked him about Monreal so of course he’s gonna praise him. But at the same time he’ll also praise his other option to know that he’s still a vital part of the squad. Why is this hard to understand? He has to fill Gibbs with hope. You have to keep all your squad members happy so they don’t lose motivation.

  31. Nasri's Mouth

We’re not missing proper defenders, we’re missing players who can control the game, either in or out of possession

  32. Romford Ozil Pele

Lol NM, yeah Theo isn’t a dribbler. I could see that situation ending badly the moment he picked it up. The amount of times he lost control or got the ball stuck under his foot was facepalm worthy

  33. Romford Ozil Pele

Holding my hands up over JC. Literally improving every game and shows real intelligence and maturity in the final third. Is he this year’s Coq? Has he reached his level or is there more to offer? Interested to find out. Put in a proper shift yesterday too. Kudos to the lad.

  34. qna

Romford: Yep a lot of our HG players leave s lot to be desired but we need them to meet the HG quota for one.

Rubbish. This is an Arsenal view of the world that does not match with reality. Chelsea and City both won their EPL titles with just 2 to 3 home grown players of note.

If you have 17 top quality players (non home grown) and add to that 2 or 3 good home grown players, then you can have a good squad. If you spend too much of your wages on the fringe players then you cannot afford a high quality core. Its simple and logical.

In addition to those 19 or 20 players you may need another 3 to 5 players for an occasional appearance. These can of course be under 21 players of any nation and you can bring these up from your good quality youth team as and when needed. For example, Bellerin is U21 and does not count toward our 17 non home grown player quota this season.

  35. Samesong

Theo done one good run all game when he moved inside two player ran past a defender and hit a tame shot past the post. I thought that was his moment!

  36. Carts

But unless there’s some kind of underlying issue (Monreal not signing an extension, or has he???) why the need to blow smoke up an inferior LB’s ass by publically stating that one of the best LB in the league isn’t necessarily your first choice? Honestly, this make zero sense. Unless Monreal has several stinkers in a row or breaks his leg, Gibbs will continue his role as the 10 minute man.

I might understand a bit if say…Gibbs is first choice LB for England and is nervous about selection for the euros as Debuchy probably is. But nah.

  37. Nasri's Mouth

RP: Holding my hands up over JC.

I’d have taken £5m for him 18 months ago. At this rate, I’d be asking for 4 times that in the summer

  38. underrated Coq

Giroud and Walcott have been playing almost every minute since Alexis’ injury. I would be tempted to rest one of them against Stoke. Giroud perhaps, cause he’ll struggle to impose himself against Shawcross.

  39. Romford Ozil Pele

QNA, it’s not rubbish? You do know the rules have changed don’t you? In City’s case they had to reduce their squad size and register a load of academy players just to meet the number.

Yes not all of them need to be English/British but I feel it’s good to have some who are attached to the club and understand what it means to play for The Arsenal. We’re not gonna spend our way to the title so need to be intelligent in how we go about things.

  40. Nasri's Mouth

Because you have to give players belief, or their head will drop. He’s doing it to keep Gibbs giving 100%, so that when he is called on he’s as good as he can be.

  41. Romford Ozil Pele

Underrated, if Alexis is fully fit then yeah go with Theo up top. However, I said earlier that L’Oreal is the type to score in patches. Seems like he’s in that form atm so you want to max as much out of him as possible because when Alexis is fully fit we must use Theo.

  42. Emiratesstroller

    Romford Ozil Pele

What you say ‘is the point’. They are either injury prone or could do “better”. I have no doubt about talent of Messrs Gibbs,Ox,Welbeck or Walcott or that they can play in this team.

However, it is their lack of “football intelligence” which is their shortcoming.

When you play at our level you need players who are good enough to come
in and play at required level and more importantly adapt to circumstances of the game.

If we are chasing a game then of course players like Walcott and Ox should be
good enough to be game changers.

On the other hand when you are under the cosh and need to defend properly
and not give away the ball, silly free kicks in dangerous positions and of course
close down the opposition and not give them space.

The end of this game highlights Wenger’s shortcomings in matches where we
need to defend a result. The three subs were frankly the wrong players to bring on in that situation.

  43. freddylekgunner

I like Cech, I mean he’s a top class goalkeeper but he should have done more to our first and last goal conceded. Maybe its the weather though coz apart from West ham he’s been great.

  44. vicky

It’s a pity only the guys whose Arsenal careers were under threat , Coq and Joel , have stepped up while those who have it very easy at Arsenal like Theo, Ramsey etc don’t really reach the level they are capable of.

  45. Romford Ozil Pele

Emirates, yeah I agree that Gibbs and Ox especially can be brain dead and make wrong decisions. I have no ambition to use Theo anywhere else apart from up front as he imbalances the side as a midfielder.

Don’t agree on the subs though. Nothing wrong with them. We could’ve just defended the goal better with the personnel we had on. Had we not conceded nobody would be talking about subs.

  46. DUIFG

me too, has great timing in terms of when to release a pass and vision, you cant really build in vision, this kid has got it.

been really impressed of late, might be a little find.

  47. Romford Ozil Pele

Freddy, think Cech was obscured by Kos for the first goal. Did feel like he might’ve been able to keep out the 3rd after getting a hand to it but he’s literally been superman for us all season thus far so can’t be too critical.

  48. Wallace

“Holding my hands up over JC. Literally improving every game and shows real intelligence and maturity in the final third. ”

yup, probably my favourite Arsenal player at the moment. when Ozil’s having a quiet one anyway…

  49. Samesong

It’s a pity only the guys whose Arsenal careers were under threat , Coq and Joel , have stepped up while those who have it very easy at Arsenal like Theo, Ramsey etc don’t really reach the level they are capable of.

Well Theo did step up when he wanted his payrise.

  50. DUIFG

lets hope this eleny can get into the league quickly, i cant deal with flamini anymore.

literally all he offers is getting his body goal side, as long as you were fit you can pretty do his job

  51. Louis Almeida

I think Ramsey has a pretty good base level. His form for the most part is decent. He can just show bad discipline at times. He needs to find a good partner at the base to really express himself. In 13/14 he had 16 goals and 10 assists and missed three months with injury. He was a freak that season. Even last season he got 10 goals. I think he has 5 now so is on course for double figures again. I like Ramsey, think he is a good player. Sometimes can be a bit immature but he always runs hard for the team and gives his all, think that’s why he can be susceptible to hamstring injuries too.

  52. qna

Romford: QNA, it’s not rubbish? You do know the rules have changed don’t you?

I just explained to you how to do it. So why would you ask me if I know the rules or not. 17 non home grown players.

Romford: In City’s case they had to reduce their squad size and register a load of academy players just to meet the number.

What are you talking about. The rule has been in place for about 5 years. City have finished in the top 2 every year since the rule was created and won 2 of the titles. Just because you dont like how City do it, dont make up shit just to fit your narrative.

  53. freddylekgunner

Coq you don’t rest Giroud against teams like stoke. Though this season Stoke has shown they can play football but they know they won’t be doing that against us so they’ll revert to the Shawcross long throws which you’ll need Giroud and most importantly Mertesecker. For the game I’ll go with Mert and Gabriel. Kos need a rest.

  54. Romford Ozil Pele

QNA, there’s no shit being made up. If you think that the only reason we’re not winning is because of HG players then I dunno what I can do for you my friend

  55. DUIFG

rambo needs to learn though just becasue you score does not make a good performance if you let your partner get bossed being so far away from him. he needs to show that maturity to sacrifice himself sometimes and just sit and protect flamini as he knows hes well out of his depth

  56. Samesong

rambo needs to learn though just becasue you score does not make a good performance if you let your partner get bossed being so far away from him. he needs to show that maturity to sacrifice himself sometimes and just sit and protect flamini as he knows hes well out of his depth

    Great post.

  57. Romford Ozil Pele

I think Ramsey has all the ingredients. As the others have said, he just needs to show maturity. You don’t need to bomb on at every opportunity. Sometimes you need to just hold your position and dictate and not let our midfield get overloaded. Tbh Liverpool did play with three in there last night so it was always gonna be hard but there’s still s bit more Ramsey can do. Could be top class if he just works on the finer nuances of his game. Has a lot going for him. He lacks Wilshere’s ability to dictate but then has a lot of other factors JW doesn’t.

  58. underrated Coq

What stands out most about Campbell is the intelligence in his play. He just seems to have a knack of making the right decisions: when to pass, when to hold possession, where to move with and without the ball, when to take a foul. His workhorse mentality has been evident since his debut but what is coming to fore now is the deftness of touch and silkiness in passing. He’s also usually pretty damn aware of his teammates’ movements. I’d put him second only to Ozil in footballing intelligence in our current 11.

  59. qna

Romford: QNA, there’s no shit being made up. If you think that the only reason we’re not winning is because of HG players then I dunno what I can do for you my friend

Lol. There you go, you have made shit up in that sentence. I didnt say anywhere that that was the only reason we are not winning. I think I just went on and on about how shit Arteta is and always has been.

But yes, the misuse and waste of our 190m wage bill (and having at least the 8th highest wage bill in the world for I dont know how many decades) is the primary reason for our failure. Part of that misuse of wage bill has been spending too much on HG players. Walcott on 140k/wk, Wilshere on 90k/wk, Welbeck on 75k/wk, Oxlaide 65k/wk, Gibbs 60k/wk, Arteta 80k/wk, Rosicky (35 yo) 85k/wk, Not to mention Diaby was on 60k/wk, Bendtner 60k/wk and all the other lemons that we couldnt sell because they were overpaid.

Our wage policy and poor use of funds is the primary reason for our failure.

  60. freddylekgunner

Vicky I think Ramsey has earned his coin, for me he’s superb player.
Romford maybe Kos blocked him but Cech on form can save that, i’m more disappointed with the last goal. That could have been saved, but after conceding two goals and the weather maybe those affected him.
Stoke is a nightmare especially if the weather is like yesterday but we need a win there for the confidence to beat Chelsea.

  61. Carts

I might be being pedantic but the wording of it is wrong.

“He has improved every year since he has arrived,” Wenger said of Monreal.

“(But) He’s not necessarily my first-choice left back. He plays more than Kieran Gibbs at the moment, but I think I am a bit spoiled there.

“Gibbs has come back and he has shown again on Saturday a very, very strong level. That makes my decisions at that level very difficult. But overall, Nacho Monreal has been absolutely outstanding.”

    Monreal – 25 starts
    Gibbs – 7 starts

Yeah I see what Wenger did there. Not.

  62. Tipster

Great game by Giroud, top class, liked JC’s pass to Rambo, and a gret finish btw. Not to close the game out was a major blow. Couple of poor substutions but who else could he bring on. Might just be our year, if we beat Stoke. Credit to Leicester, still in contention.

  63. freddylekgunner

qna Walcott is on 100k i’ve said it here many times, you can check, and no need to mention Diaby and Bendtner, they are long gone

  64. Dissenter

I laugh every time I read people write that “rest Giroud” and “he doesn’t play well with Alexis”
When are people going to realize that GIROUD IS THE BEST CF we have in the club currently in spite of all jis weaknesses?

Did I just read someone write that we should play Sanchez and Theo, two f**king midgets against tall and physical defense line?

  65. qna

freddy. lol. How do you know. And how can I check? That is funny. Walcott was on 100k/wk on his last contract. He has a good agent and manage to up that to 140k/wk when he signed his last contract. You can check. 🙂

  66. freddylekgunner

Tipster who else could he bring on? The last time he brought on Arteta, he caused an own goal and got injured. What about Gabriel? You said it yourself that we are closing out the game.

  67. Mickey G

I agree that Kos is an excellent defender. I see him as the ball playing type CB. The type that will make the odd mistake that a no nonsense hoof merchant never makes, but that’s the price of being able to play out from the back. My issue is that Mertersacker is a weak link. He is usually not exposed except against elite opposition, but then he is totally out of his depth. Not aggressive enough, fast enough etc etc. We play a high line and to me he’s a liability. I agree that Coquelin is a loss, but I think that adding a top quality player in there (maybe Gabriel can do it, not sure yet) will give us another lift in the same way that Cech and Coquelin did. We will always be on the lookout for strikers and play makers, but we have internal options there that could be the equal or better than any potential signings. So that’s why I think it’s the one position that could give us a massive lift. Another DM would be well and good too, but we can only play one of those at a time. Also this Elneny fella might be that option.

  68. Biggles

Just had to share a wonderful line from the Daily Mail:
“Arsene Wenger’s interest in Cavani has been widely reported, with the Gunners in need of cover for injured Danny Welbeck. ”

Yup. That’s all we’d be wanting Cavani for. Cover for Welbeck.

  69. Dissenter

Its only you and Nasri’s mouth that ever rated Arteta.
You actually lowered the bar when you brought in an already won FA cup game against the second team of Sunderland at home as a good game for Arteta. It seems you’re scratching the bottom of the barrel…. and you know it.

The angst about last night is isn’t just hindsight.
Many people here called it when he was warming up. I’m sure Arteta is a great fella but he has no place in a top premier league team squad. He’s talked about “contributing” but needs to ask himself if he still has it.

It may be that people are just projecting their anger about last summer’s transfer failings on Arteta. It’s just that he embodies Wenger’s inaction.

  70. freddylekgunner

qna and Loius you both check, he was not on 100k before his last contract was renewed. Don’t believe everything you read on daily mail.

  71. Romford Ozil Pele

Mickey – I’m not a big fan of Per either but don’t think you can really blame him last night. He made quite a few vital interceptions and blocks. Him and Kos generally make a good partnership and we win a lot of games with them back there. I agree that I’d like to see Kos and Gab as a partnership but first and foremost we need to defend as a unit. We’re conceding too many shots on goal at the moment but that’s because people are bypassing our midfield too easily. This never used to be the case. Well Elneny is the DM that’s coming in right now. And I doubt Wenger will buy another CB as he has faith in chambers and Gabriel. We only really play a high line at home and even that’s been cut back recently due to the absence of Coq.

  72. Nasri's Mouth

Mickey G: He is usually not exposed except against elite opposition, but then he is totally out of his depth.

    No, he really isn’t.

He’s not ideal for the pressing game we might want to play when we have players like Welbeck and Alexis fit, but in a game last night, he’s very worthwhile

  73. Cesc Appeal

Looking at that result in the cold light of day, you would say a point at Liverpool isn’t the worst result, but it is in the context of the game, a few minutes left and we’re up 3-2 to then draw, especially given the shoddy nature of the equaliser and also the poor give away for the first goal.

The good that came out of the game is that Giroud may have entered one of his scoring streaks and that Campbell is continuing to be a solid player.

The bad is that our midfield is still atrocious, the amount of space and time a team gets in our centre is ridiculous, was the same for Sunderland, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Southampton, the only time since Coq’s injury we’ve managed to keep it tight in there was City when the occasion impressed on the players and they stayed disciplined.

Need to seriously hope this Elneny is a good buy and can help the team from the off.

Kozz didn’t look great last night, still obviously our best defender, but I would maybe switch in Gabriel for Stoke, sounds crazy but may even put Elneny straight in, I just can’t see how he can be worse than that Ramsey, Flamini base. Should have Rosicky on the bench as well, someone should impress upon Walcott he has one more game to actually show something or he will be dropped for Sanchez. Been completely useless the last 4-5 games.

Hopefully we will have Sanchez on the bench as well, though I fully expect a ‘little set back,’ or for him to be ‘not quite ready.’

  74. Romford Ozil Pele

Dissenter – I agree with you that Arteta is done. What I’m arguing against is that he wasn’t the reason for the equaliser last night.

  75. Tipster

@Freddy, agree Arteta is well past it (might as well brought me on lol).. Text book to bring on a defensive midfielder, just needs to be better that Arteta, ok maybe Gabriel.

  76. Nasri's Mouth

Dissenter: People have to give Elnenyn time to settle.
    Don’t set him for failure.

HA! Like that’s going to happen 😉

  77. Dissenter

Is there anyone left here who are still dismissing Leicester’s championship chances?

To best Spuds twice in four days is very difficult. It’s past the midpoint and they’ve shown they can cope with the pressure.
I think mentally they have the advantage of low expectations and wont be as pressured as us or city.

They are now genuine title contenders.

  78. qna

freddy: qna and Loius you both check, he was not on 100k before his last contract was renewed. Don’t believe everything you read on daily mail.

Lol. But we should believe you. no-one has even seen a single report or article suggesting his last contract was anything but 100k/wk. And all the reports I have seen say his latest one is 140k/wk. No offense freddy, but nobody is going to take your word for it. Even if it is caughtoffside or the express saying it, they have more credibility thank freddy lek.

  79. Red&White4life

“Seems to be able to run for days and is quite physical which is what we need.”
Much better than arteta anyway lol

  80. Dissenter

To be fair, after a good night’s sleep, that less isn’t as annoying anymore.

There are many characters who have to start contributing. There are too many passengers in the team like Gibbs, Oxlade and Theo.

Sorry had to go there. Theo was gash, Oxlade isn’t improving and Gibbs needs to put his body on the line for the team.

  81. Red&White4life

“They are now genuine title contenders.”

I can only imagine the shame if we finish second behind them lol

But I think that the final ranking will be: 1)city, 2) Leicester, 3) Arsenal.
    3rd place ==>> improvement lol

  82. Romford Ozil Pele

Pedantic I know, but how do we actually spell it?

Arsenal have it as Elneny but I’ve seen El Neny, El Nenny and El-Nenny?

  83. Goonah

That Wenger statement made no sence to me, Everyone can see Monreal is twice the player and it only belittles him.
I’m sure Gibbs knows he hit the jackpot just being in the squad and if he works hard he will stay there. No need to publicly massage his ego.

It would make more sence if he said that Bellerin was not necessarily first choice and if Debuchy works hard and regain form he will get his chance.
Try and lift Debuchy and keep the young Bellerin from being complacent

  84. Dissenter

Stop arguing the obvious. It’s so @#$&%

Theo is on about £140k weekly.
He was on £100k weekly before he had his last contract signed
He has a shrewd agent who knows his to extract the best contract that exceeds his talents.

  85. qna

Romford: ” What I’m arguing against is that he wasn’t the reason for the equaliser last night.”

I didnt say he was directly responsible. But we should not have brought him on. He should not even be on our squad list. We should have signed his replacement in the summer. But even after we didnt, we should have unofficially retired him to stud after his last outing. We should not have brought him on unless it was an absolute emergency. Gabriel would have been better. Gabriel was in good form.

  86. qna

Dimitri: Looks like sideshow Bob’s interracial love child.

So the whole race of Egyptians look interracial now do they.

  87. freddylekgunner

Dissenter at this point I think they are real, but I still think Man city is the threat. For me they are currently on Spur’s level and since when they won the league, probably can’t remember or maybe I wasn’t borned then

  88. Dissenter

    Nice try Arsenal.
We’ve unveiled a player that does not have a squad number assigned yet.
His photograph shirt does not even have his name on it yet.

F***ing amateurish considering he was in the pipeline for about three weeks and it was no secret he was coming in.

  89. Nasri's Mouth

Interested to see Wengers comments on him. Might get a clue as to where he sees him on the field, and whether we’ll get anyone else

  90. Cesc Appeal

I agree with your ‘passengers’ comment.

Sadly, it seems to have been the way for a while, but whilst the better players perform those passengers go unnoticed. Its only in a time like now where you pick up on them, but they then get rapidly forgotten when the big guns are back and firing.

People were lauding Walcott when he had that 2-3 games of serious form, but this is what everyone needs to remember about Walcott, he has these flashpoints in a season, but for the majority, he’s anonymous, the way its always been for 10 years.

I don’t get the hype with him at all. Easily replaceable.

Gibbs, is just Gibbs. Really don’t get what he brings. But Oxlade, real conundrum there, no idea what is going on with him, his decision making is so poor, last night was another example, on the break, two men over on his left, one in bundles of space, runs straight into a defender instead and lets Liverpool off.

  91. Romford Ozil Pele

Yeah Wenger’s press conference tomorrow should be interesting. Should welcome back Rosicky to the squad, hopefully Alexis too and Elneny.

  92. Cesc Appeal

Guardiola: ‘Maybe it will be two years until I will coach a team in England. I am very happy about my experience in Munich. I am working until my last second here.’

‘After that I will go home and wait to see if it is possible to move to England or not. If it’s not, then I won’t.’

    Very interesting.

  93. Romford Ozil Pele

Mostly looking forward to the tough away games where we can just deploy Elneny and Coquelin as a pivot. No more running through our f***ing midfield!!

  94. Dissenter

I agree with you. Gabriel was the better substitute last night.
I still don’t know what Wenger sees in Arteta.
Liverpool were left with one option: get the ball to Benteke to nod down. What was Arteta going to do to negate that?

Sorry, I don’t see any leadership in Arteta (at least not on the field)

Good leaders know when their times mare up and they provide the same service. Pirlo and Xavi knew when to walk into the sunset.

I’ve got no respect for Arteta ‘cos he’s a leech who’s burrowed himself into a club that surpasses his abilities and wont walk away even when he knows he’s done. I probably get attacked for my tone but I’ve actually held back.

  95. Dimitri

I think Wenger just saw Arteta as an experienced head who is good at retaining posession. Ideally he would have brought some calm and helped us retain the ball more, but the game is too fast for him now. Should have been Chambers who came on.

  96. freddylekgunner

Pedro can you please tell us Theo wages? I think you have some inside info and you have more credibity tha caughtoffside and dailymail anyway.

  97. Romford Ozil Pele

Dream, you don’t know how much that song annoys me. And it’s one of those addictive tunes that get stuck in your head too!

Yeah we actually take so long to get deals done. The first we read about this deal was on like Boxing Day. Now we’re half way through the month and it’s only just been confirmed.

  98. Carts

Mate, exactly, you see exactly what is going on here, and it’s pathetic beyond belief.

That statement Wenger made was wrong. You have a LB who has started 3 times as many games this season along that his nearest challenger but he still had the audacity to say his is necessarily first choice.

Then you’ve got RP saying in the fact “Monreal is nearly 30” and that Wenger is “showing love to Gibbs”; then NM chimes in with “give player belief or their heads will drop”. L.O.L

Wenger is a disingenuous prick at times. And what he said is a straight up lie.

  99. Carts

” I agree with you that Arteta is done. What I’m arguing against is that he wasn’t the reason for the equaliser last night.”

No banter, I might have missed it, but who categorically said “Arteta was to blame?

  100. Nasri's Mouth

No idea how much truth there is in it, but there was a rumour that David Miles (club sec.) was a stickler for dotting the ‘i’s and crossing the ‘t’s on all contracts, and that he was often the hold up over the last few bits and pieces.

  101. Nasri's Mouth

Carts: Wenger is a disingenuous prick at times. And what he said is a straight up lie.

Yes it probably is, but don’t tell Gibbs.

(which IS the whole point of it)

  102. Dissenter

When Alexis returns back to the squad, who do you drop?

The, obvious question would have been Campbell but the dude’s overall play and guile surpasses Walcott’s.
Other than that over-cited “speed” Walcott’s play is limited.
He needs to drop to the bench. I would never play him against Stoke away because he’ll be bullied easily.

  103. Relieable Sauce

LvG cant hold out too much longer, body language from Giggs doesnt bode well.
    Next game Liverpool…

Maybe Pep is still holding out for MU, it was his preference apparently. Will he keep MC dangling in the hope MU pull their finger out of their arses? Will he turn down the City job on the chance the MU (or AFC) job become available in a year or two?

I find it really strange MU dont seem to be interested.

  104. Romford Ozil Pele

I was thinking that Elneny was our first Egyptian only to remember that we used to have Rami Shaaban lol. What a calamity he was.

  105. Dream10

You might be on to something. Remember someone else posting similar earlier in the season. It would be disappointing if El Neny’s deal was completed in time for the Liverpool match and AW chose to leave him out

  106. daz

Walcott is just a dumb ass he summed his career up well himself a few years ago with his ” I’ve been consistant in patches ” comment

  107. Paddy got bored

So sick of Wongas obvious substitutions after 70 mins bringing on Gibbs who looks permanently stoned to me and the Ox so out of form he wouldn’t get a game in the championship!!
Carefree in goal won’t leave his line, and Walcott must think he’s won the lottery each week.. £100k or £140k it’s still obscene for a player like him..
On the other hand welcome Elnenny he can’t be Egyptian? He’d never get a fez above all that hair
