Arsenal v United. Let’s make this the big one again

Greetings from Sunday morning y’all, Alex here with a short post.

So its the big one today against Manchester United: league leaders and flavour-of-the-month-fraudulent-over-achievers. This fixture used to be massive, an intense blistering affair packed full of, not just the best players in the league, but the nastiest bastards you’d ever care to meet.

I met someone recently who knows Dennis Irwin. Apparently to this day he still despises Arsenal. Not because we were the best, but because we were the nastiest team he ever played against. I’m not advocating we turn into a bunch of cheats, but I kind of yearn for the times when teams absolutely hated playing against us. Do you reckon any of that United midfield are worried about Santi Cazorla bullying them off the park today in the way Viera used to? I doubt it.

Ah but look at me, its Sunday morning and I’ve become one of those “we need leader’s on the pitch” people. Maybe it’s not that, I just want to see some fire in the players’ bellies today. United are a bunch of evil bastards and we should be going out there for a battle.

In terms of team news, our best defender, Laurent Koscielny, is crocked. I’m pretty happy with Per and Gabriel as a pairing though. We can expect to see Theo up top, and after his strong display against Leicester, lets hope he’s got his shooting boots on.

There’s not really much else going on today… oh yeah other than HUGE LOL at Chelsea’s meltdown, have you ever seen a Championship winning side turn south so dramatically? Also big man love for Kun Aguero. What a sexy player.

I’m going to be at the game today, unbelievably only my second home game all season, I’m such a shit fan. Hopefully see some of you there.

Here’s to a strong performance and three points. Up the Arsenal!

    My starting line-up will be.
    Cech
    Bellerin – PM04 – Garial – Monreal
    Coquelin – Ramsey
    Walcott – Carzola – Alexis
    Giroud
But unfortunately wenger will start Ozil,Coquelin, ramsey and carzola in midfield and play alexie and Walcott as attacker and drew is the best we can hope for.

  2. WengersSweeties

I’ve actually turned into one of those people who actually want us to lose.

Lose big here, then both games against Bayern Munich and that SHOULD be enough to see Wenger gone.

I know that sounds negative, but what I think is MORE negative is supporting us for the win and seeing Arsene continue…

So today I’m a Utd fan….then Bayern for 2 legs.

1 step back, 2 step forwards and all that…

  3. Tippitappi

going there today having no idea what to expect will still have alcohol to numb the worries pre match though

  4. Tippitappi

wengersSweeties I do sympathies with that view as an Arsenal supporter and a wenger hater its difficult though, but I’ll buy that if that’s what it takes

  5. nigel tufnel

Has anyone noticed that since Chelsea has been in the toilet, GAMBON has gone missing?

After his wanking and ejaculating all over mourinho and costa, cesc, and Hazard last year, he should be ashamed of himself.

He will come back and say his very important business has kept him away, his busy life.
On Chelsea, it’s been my feeling for a few weeks that cretin mourinho has really lost the players support. They can’t stand the petulant little man anymore, as happened when they ran “the translator” out of Spain.
This week, he spoke about a rat in the changing rooms reporting to the media.
I love to watch this. They may get a little better, but there is no big comeback this year.

    Sorry gambon.

  6. Goonergirl

Don’t understand how some people will call themselves fans and then wish for the team to lose. I want Wenger out as much as anyone but willing the team you support to lose is just wrong. Hoping we turn up today and get a win.

  7. Uwot?

The only thing I’ m expecting is for “shrek” to score.you can put your house on it.other than that.a dodgy own goal by U.S..a dodgy decision or two for MANURE.goes without saying really.lots of tippy tippy from our lot who will attempt to walk it in.two banks of four we won’t know how to break down & a counter attack goal leaked by U.S..oh yeah, nearly forgot.we’ ll do a balls up with a set piece leading to another calamitous failure.last but not least.will play with little pride or spirit.sad but par for the course when we face that lot these days.oh well.i guess anything else will be a bonus….

  8. Dave

Wenger will say we were unlucky and played a little scared at the Emirates. Untold will blame the red. le grove will go into meltdown. Mert will be on Website saying now it is time to show mental strength and we have to bounce back.

  9. useroz

Rosicky likely out for the seaon, the media reports. Great job, Wenger.

If we are after a BIG one, our boys need to lock Wenger out of the dressing room and just figure it out.

  10. Jeff

“Lose big here, then both games against Bayern Munich and that SHOULD be enough to see Wenger gone.”

I really, really doubt that. We’re not going to lose 8:2 and he didn’t go then so why should he go now? It is very early in the season and even if we drop to the lowest possible today which is 9th, there is still plenty of time to make up ground for top four which is after all our sacred position. So, unfortunately, Arsene will not jack it in because the alternative for him (i.e. to not manage ever again) is even more unbearable.

  11. SpanishDave

Wenger quoted that he will go when he decides. What an arrogant arsehole.
What other manager in the prem would even think that?
It just demonstrates the hold he has on the owner and board.
He fortunately doesn’t have such a hold on the fans and media.

  12. Bamford10

Two good things about the quote I posted above: one, Wenger has “retirement” on his mind; two, his saying it will be “impulsive” means it could be brought on by negative circumstances and could occur sooner rather than later.

More pressure and criticism needs to be brought upon him in order to force him out.

As for today, I would simply like to see some fight, some pride, some heart.

    Morning, all.

  13. Champagne Charlie

    @goonergirl

You’re a fan if you have the best interests of the club at hand surely? Well IF losing against United and both legs vs Bayern gets Wenger he boot and new life into the club, are you honestly gonna sit attend tell me you want to see us get a win in there?

Not me. Trouble is there’s no guarantee it would see Wenger out so the desire to see a loss becomes moot. But I’ll say it as clear as day, IF losing the next 3 games sees Wenger gone…. let’s go United & Bayern.

  14. nigel tufnel

I see how many of you prepare for the big game. Come here and slate our team and manager with dire predictions. Hoping for embarassing losses for our team.Nice.
    Real miserable lot.

  15. Marc

Just about everyone’s pissed off with the situation at the moment including me but I just can’t want ManU to beat us.

    Come on Arsenal.

  16. Frankie T

I’m torn today. I know if we win I’ll be ecstatic to finally get one other those frauds.

However part of me wants us to take a hiding just to crank up the pressure on Wenger. It pains me to say it but it’s the only way that he will go if we keep losing games.

It has to get worse before it gets better. I’ll still cheer if we score though so thanks Wenger for messing with my mind.

  17. Tipster

Big test for theo today. Manure defend well and deep without much room behind., the jury’s out for me but need to give a final verdict…. Looks like a draw to me…

  18. David Smith

Great points bamford10, usually he only says he never breaks a contract , really hope that quote is a game changes although with recent sad events in his personal life, maybe arsenal is now all he has left?

  19. underrated Coq

Lot of delusion on here today. Even if Arsenal have a string of poor results, do any of you think the board would sack Wenger? Or can you ever see a large scale fan backlash against Wenger ? Never gonna happen.

The only way you get your wish is if Wenger decides he’s had enough. So the question is: Do you people honestly believe that Wenger–after 19 years at the club– would choose to tarnish his legacy and end it all by abandoning/ running away from a bit of pressure created during mid-season?

  20. Emiratesstroller

Today’s fixture will define our season in the EPL. If we lose at home to Man Utd
we will be not only 6 points behind them in the League, but it will send out once again the message that Arsenal teams under Wenger cannot beat our main rivals.

The sad fact is that our club has an awful record against the two Manchester and Chelsea clubs. We have won just one league fixture against them in last three years.

This is not just about squad personnel, but tactics, balance of team and of course leadership both on and off the field.

If you analyse our squad it is not significantly better or worse than that of Man
Utd, but our failings against them in recent years have always been the same
and to be honest I don’t think it will change today.

Man Utd will come to Emirates with a plan which will be to absorb our pressure and then rely on set pieces and counter attack. It is of course in these areas that Arsenal are and have been for years vulnerable.

The sad fact is that Arsenal are totally predictable in the way we play and that
has been the situation for a very long time and now even inferior teams to Man Utd are able to get results against us at the Emirates.

This will only change when the club learns to change its tactics to suit the teams who play against us and also to bring in some players who are tactically
better in defence and more effective in attack.

Frankly today is a must win game or at least one we must not lose.

  21. Alex James

I too would like to see Wenger gone but not at the expense of losing to the Mancs. I dislike Chelsea and Spurs but hate them with a passion. They are a financial juggernaut born out of a sad disaster. Every since then, they have been the darlings of the media and the smug blighters who live in Essex and Cornwall. I cannot forget the 8-2 humiliation, and no true Asenal supporter with any respect for himself/ herself should either. Wenger says he is a man of integrity. If so, he should have walked that night. Take it from me, most of our board will more upset over the rugby than a loss against the Mancs.

  22. GunnerInNY

I don’t think Wenger would get sacked if we lost the next five matches, nor do I think he would quit. So I am full-on rooting for Arsenal today.

But Nigel, your approach is wrong. Blind support for the club hurts the club. It is obvious to anyone who is being fair that Wenger is not even close to getting the best out of the club given what he has. Arsenal desperately need a new manager.

  23. underrated Coq

” I cannot forget the 8-2 humiliation, and no true Asenal supporter with any respect for himself/ herself should either. Wenger says he is a man of integrity. If so, he should have walked that night. ”

That’s the thing- Wenger wasn’t/isn’t gonna run away when the going gets tough/ things aren’t rosy, IMO. That’s what Mourinho does, not Wenger. Why would he? He’s overseen all kinds of highs and lows of Arsenal, he isn’t gonna turn his back during an ongoing crisis. He’ll look to turn it around or atleast bring the club to stability before calling it a day.

Its why I never understand when ‘fans’ hope for bad losses. Its never gonna make him quit, it’ll only make him more determined to keep going and make it right again.

  24. S Asoa

Analysis of WENGER decision to retire impulsively
= This smart Alec economist and football fraud knows which side his bread is buttered and never will . With the type of online he is getting anyone would walk out, except this hag of a courtesan .
He is confident because he in cahoots with Kroenke for the Laughing Stock Arsenal has become.
So match going fans piss into your empty cans and heave ho
    FOR ARSENAL
    LET US REGAIN OUR PRIDE
IN AT LEAST TRYING TO BE No 1

  25. Cesc Appeal

    Cech
    Bellerin, Mert, Gabriel, Monreal
    Coq, Ramsey
    Walcott, Caz, Sanchez
    Giroud

I would stick Walcott up front, his last two displays in fairness have been good up there, but Oxlade is stinking the place out and we don’t really have another option there, again, just cursing the lack of talent in the market…that was available…at Wenger prices…that has a masters in astrophysics.

    So I’d put Walcott there.

Need to stop with this Cazorla in the middle thing now as well, Ozil hasn’t been great and rarely seems to play well in a big game so I’d be more inclined to stick Cazorla at CAM and just tell Ramsey to keep it simple beside Coquelin, we need his energy, physicality and occasional…hear that word Aaron, occasional…overlapping run.

  26. Bamford10

    Underrated

He said that he would’ve left had he not beaten Hull in the FA final two years back. That would’ve been departing after failure.

Wenger is not some immovable object. He is a man — a vain, egotistical, stubborn and deluded man. If he is miserable enough, he will leave.

I am not saying that circumstances will necessarily make him go, but I do think it is possible — far more possible than people realize.

The man’s job is enormously stressful, and with more and more bad results, more and more critical headlines and articles, more and more unpleasant press conferences, a year on a quiet beach in the south of France will begin to look quite appealing to him.

In the end, there are two possibilities: things go reasonably well for him, and he leaves when he pleases; things get worse and worse for him, and he leaves sooner rather than later.

I am pulling for the latter.

  27. Redtruth

The 8-2 drubbing was an isolated heavy defeat which Wenger easily deflected by bouncing back with a few meaningless victories.

What would damage Wenger is accumulative losses.

  28. Goonergirl

    Cesc

Yeah I like that team. If we actually had other options wide right I would have started Walcott up front. But we don’t so I’d rather have Walcott on the right and Giroud up front. But I have a feeling Wenger will go with his usual team.

  29. Uwot?

Nigel my son.it’s prob because it’s that we seem to be on a never ending spiral of negativity & mediocrity & of seeing it repeated.season after miserable season.do you not think we are better than two fa cups in 10 years?do you not weep when you seen the same mistakes being repeated again & again & again?does it not frustrate you?if not .you are a saint my man.

  30. underrated Coq

    Bamford

” things get worse and worse for him, and he leaves sooner rather than later. ”

But history tells us he always manages to avoid such a situation which is why I am hoping for the former ( no matter how impossible that sounds ) . Maybe, somehow, we win the League this season and he decides on a sudden retirement like Fergie !

The second possibility, I just can’t see. No matter how worse things appear, they’ve never tended to get past breaking point under Wenger all these years. Why would it happen this time around? He’ll still get top four, maybe even a domestic cup and everything gets forgotten.

I have already resigned myself to one more year of the same. Can’t see Wenger retiring before his contract ends but I also can’t see him signing another contract.

  31. Cesc Appeal

    Goonergirl

    I agree.

No doubt it will be Ramsey at RM, Cazorla next to Coquelin and Walcott up front. Wenger will go safety here, he really cannot afford to lose, the pressure will be immense on him, in the space of a couple of weeks a loss to Chelsea, humiliation in the UCL again already this season and then a loss at home to United…he will be thankful for that Spurs win if that is the case.

  32. Cesc Appeal

    Underrated

    Agreed.

I think that is the best team we can go with right now, a CDM playing CDM, a B2B playing B2B, two wide men, one CAM and a proper, albeit distinctly average, ST.

It was that sort of set up that sent us on our decent run last year.

  33. Redtruth

    Cesc
“It was that sort of set up that sent us on our decent run last year.”

Our decent run was 14 points from a possible 42 points against last seasons top 8 lol lol

  34. Tipster

Reading the comments, we’ve reduced our expectations to be perennial underachievers., just happy to be at the party…sad days….Arsene’s ego

  35. Goonergirl

    Cesc

Yeah I agree. He can’t afford to lose this game especially with games coming up against Bayern in the UCL.

Today’s game is a big one. Hopefully we show up and come away with the win.

  36. David Smith

Wenger won’t leave mid season, but maybe in the summer? Unless of course they really do end up challenging for the title.
Wonder if that quote about retirement was aimed at the players in some way.
Wenger aside, I will never want us to lose to Utd , or anyone else really, behind those who wear the shirt all the way, they didn’t make Wenger untouchable.
When he does go, we will find if it is him , the board or both holding us back….depending on how good the new man is…..I suspect a coalition of willing between Wenger and the board, the only trepidation is who Stan will choose next. I cannot see a pep who would put way more demands on the board, than Stan may like

  37. Relieable Sauce

Should be interesting to see what we look like today – “stylistically” after the hairdryer treatment.
Rumour is The Ox is out with a singed high-top.

  38. Vince

If Ox is out then I expect Jeff Adelaide to at least be in the match day squad and come to add some bite later if we need it.

  39. gonsterous

Why do people still think Wenger is sackable ?
The board would shit themselves over trying to run a football club with out him.
Do any of them look like they know how to run a team ?

  40. Bamford10

Everton-Liverpool is a good game so far. Two good #10’s in Coutinho and Barkley, and both keepers have come up with great saves.

Lukaku is starting to look a better player to me. Have never really rated him, but his touch and quality seem to be improving.

With Sturridge back, Liverpool would be wise to sell Benteke and sign a quality CM and/or CDM with the proceeds.

  41. Bamford10

    Gonsterous

No one is talking about him being sacked. Talking about him retiring, a subject the man himself has just broached (and not for the first time).

  42. jwl

” …. lets hope he’s got his shooting boots on.”

Lets hope that some of our players also remember to wear their scoring boots, and even some defense boots, because we take plenty of shots but don’t score much, and concede far too many.

  43. daz

“With Sturridge back, Liverpool would be wise to sell Benteke”

Do my eyes deceive me? Bamford I thought Benteke was a worldie?

  44. Bamford10

    STV

Praise United? I would never “praise” them, but I will gladly highlight where they are stronger than us or where we are weak, if need be.

  45. jwl

Have feeling this is going to be one of those matches, that seem to happen once or twice a season, where Wenger does pay attention to tactics and we look solid team. Final score is going to be 1-1 or 2-1 .

  46. bishop

If Liverpool win and we lose to Man Utd as always expected..they will be above us.Yet Rodgers is under pressure of losing his job but Wenger is busy attacking the press of not being creative hence they ask him stupid questions about his anointed Job noone can question.

I hope it doesn’t end in shame for Wenger.

I can’t stand a loss against Man utd at the Emirates today..sort it out arrogant man.

  47. Bamford10

    Daz

One, I’ve always rated Sturridge, and I rate him over Benteke.

Two, I never said Benteke was “world class,” just a better CF than either Giroud or Walcott, something I gladly stand by.

Three, if Liverpool want to improve, they don’t need a great #2 CF; they need a stronger/better central midfield.

Probably too nuanced a view for you. Do your best to comprehend.

  48. STV

The more you think of it you know how shameful we lost to this Chelsea side. No its not just referee we lost to Moyes’ United as well. Wenger instilled a fear of top teams in players minds which is far deeper.

  49. Arseology

Would much rather we smashed ManUre, ManShitty, Liverpoo & the Scum and if we have to loose, let it be against the Watfords, Southamptons and Swanseas of the league.

  50. daz

Bamford its hardly a nuanced view honestly you seriously over estimate your opinion, when sturridge is injured again within the next month or two they will need benteke

  51. STV

Id rather have Wenger to win pl and leave gracefully at the end of the season. I feel neither of it happens and at worst he must leave once his contract ends.

  52. Bamford10

    Daz

Relative to your dim-witted question, it is. Further, Ings and Origi are ample back-up for Sturridge. What they really need is a better starting central midfield. Far more important.

    Nice effort, though.

  53. WengerEagle

We need a big performance out of Ozil today. Don’t now if we’ll get one, history tells us we probably will not.

Gut tells me that it’ll be a score draw which would be disappointing.

Don’t care who you are you need to be winning your home matches vs your rivals.

  54. Hitman

If we lost to Utd, BMx2, and AW got the sack, the new manger would still have enough time to win the title – the EPL really is open and up for grabs. But not by us if AW is still in charge.

I don’t want us to lose but we probably will lose all three games as the midget squad assembled by AW sucks.

  55. Bamford10

    STV

Wenger isn’t even going to COMPETE for the title, much less win it. Why even float such an implausibility? Completely pointless.

  56. daz

Bamford if they put benteke up for sale now they wouldn’t recoup the money they paid for him just few months ago how this seems a good idea to you i don’t know, what they need to do is ship out Lucas and sahko and replace with higher quality

  57. Bamford10

    Daz

I’m not saying they should sell him immediately or at a big loss, simply that they should sell him and use the proceeds for more important needs. They don’t need a £35m back-up CF — one who doesn’t even fit into their system terribly well, btw.

  58. Jamal

The leakiest Chelsea team in over a decade still managed to keep a clean sheet against us, so lets not get too excited about their form when we are just as bad.

  59. Arsene's Nurse

    Arsenal

    33 Cech
    24 Bellerín
    04 Mertesacker
    05 Gabriel
    18 Monreal
    19 Cazorla
    34 Coquelin
    16 Ramsey
    11 Özil
    17 Sánchez
    14 Walcott

    Substitutes

    02 Debuchy
    03 Gibbs
    12 Giroud
    13 Ospina
    15 Oxlade-Chamberlain
    21 Chambers
    28 Campbell

  60. Bamford10

Looks like LVG is playing Ashley Young as a fullback. Must be really short there. Strange selection, to me.

    Their XI is:
    De Gea
    Smalling
    Blind
    Darmian
    Young
    Schweinsteiger
    Carrick
    Mata
    Rooney
    Depay
    Martial

  61. Cesc Appeal

    Wenger’s gone for safety.

United’s team is bolder than I thought it would be, we might get some more freedom in the middle, thought they’d maybe sacrifice one of Rooney or Depay and add an extra CDM/CM.

  62. Johnty79

Come wind rain or shine Ozils name is always on the team sheet. Ozil we will have to accept is a flop against the good teams. He should play against the bottom half teams but not against the good ones.

Ozil will flop again today it’s a given.

Wenger is clueless and I hope man utd show him how clueless he is.

I think we will win 2:1 but whenever I tip arsenal the fall down.

  63. Bamford10

Who does more today? Mata from a wide position, or Ozil from the CAM?

Just thinking I’d stir the pot a little. ;’)

  64. OleGunner

    Johnt79
Don’t be clueless we need Ozil in a fixture this size. You don’t bench him when the alternatives are truly gash.

  65. gonsterous

Against Chelsea or the big teams it’s all to do with mentality.. the reason we lose so many big games is because mentally we are afraid of these teams or we think we can’t beat them and additionally Chelsea or the other teams know they can beat us or have that drilled into them. It is true because we normally have a giants share of the possesion and still manage to end up losing !!!

  66. gonsterous

How about we stop trying to bring down ozil before the game has even started. This biased support of other team players is why everyone focuses on the mistakes made by our players and highlight them to a great extent !!

  67. Paulinho

Mata playing should help us more than hinder if we play with confidence. He is a physical non-entity to we should try and play around him in midfield to get at their back four.

He’s only a threat against crap teams or if you completely switch off and don’t track blatant obvious runs.

  68. gonsterous

We could have ronaldo or messi in the squad and the people of le grove would still find a way to say they are shit..
they are too selfish.. why is messi dribbling so much.. Why does ronaldo want all the goals.. guys a scum, we should just sell him and get young !!

  69. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

    Random

    It ain’t Ozil

It’s the fact we have no world class striker that can run on to his brilliant vision

He must think what the fuck Walcott an Giround are both shit strikers for him to feed …

  70. Paulinho

Only real chance is hoping Sanchez comes in from the left and makes good contact. Also you always know Monreal is good for one or two class overlaps.

We pretty much know Ozil is going to do absolutely nothing of note. Lots of peeling off to the flanks and games of keep ball near their corner flag.

  71. bishop

OX on the bench can even rub rubbish on the ones playing..He’s been rubbish for long and even isn’t progressing. To me he’s worse than 4 yrs ago he came.

Though some flashes of his brilliance is the only thing visible..Doesn’t really add anything meaningful aside giving ball away to opponents in games in dangerous areas.

  72. Gunneruni

Young at left back tells me LVG has out-thought Wenger tactically again. He will give them the extra threat going forward knowing theres nothing to worry about from Ramsey playing RW. LVG predicted Wenger will pick Ramsey at RW and Wenger duly obliged.

    1-2 defeat looming.

  73. gonsterous

Any reason why they only write Gabriel on the team sheet ? Why not his full name ? Or am I the only who’s curious bout that ?

  74. qna

“Who does more today? Mata from a wide position, or Ozil from the CAM?”

Ozil all day long. If Ozil had a strike force in front of him that could actually score goals people will be calling him the best player in the league and asking if he should be nominated for Ballon’Dor.

Question is how long can Ozil continue to slum it. Maybe the best option for all is to sell him off to Bayern in January.

  75. Relieable Sauce

We could see another cute set play from UTD today & the script is written for Martial to make a fool of wenger.

LB – LCB & even CM looks a little weak for MU, but they do have several players that can help control the tempo & play passes from deep.
