Stoke time…

by .

HAPPY SATURDAY TO YA’LL
JUST IN OFF THE BACK OF THREE STRAIGHT FLIGHTS BUT I’M FINE.
Missing Stoke today. First and only 3 o’clock of the season. Real shame that. The Beer weather is what I’d call optimal.
Big game today. Post breaks are always tricky. Stoke are missing Affellay and Charlie Adams. Which means we have a better chance of smashing them I’d guess?
We need a fast start. None of this easing in nonsense. We need a showing today. This is a good chance to kick the season off properly. We have some hard games this term and Champions League drops back into the mix which will make things decidedly trickier.
Wenger has been bantering with media about the soft upbringing of kids in the modern era. Interesting that most people I speak to in the game tell me Arsenal are beyond over the top compared to others. We pamper the players to the max!
If you want tougher kids, beast them or make them work for their living. Happens everywhere else. Also, stop buying in middle class kids and get a bit of working class slaaaaaag in there. That’d shake it up a bit.
Truth is, if you’re good enough, you make it regardless of what you train on. Reverting back to the good old days is a bit twee. It’s the defence of someone who has run out of ideas. Or someone who is tired. When you control the environment and how players are trained, you should do something about soft players. Funny, if that comment came from Fat Sam we’d all be recoiling at the comment.
Wenger also went on the build press around a lack of options in the striking department, citing Spain and Germany as examples of successful teams succeeding without a specialist striker. He also made the bold claim that people questioned his faith in Nic Anelka and Thierry.
Not sure I remember that ever being they buzz. On striker was so electric Wenger has to drop his senior counterpart. He was literally the most exciting thing in the Premier League from day one. Same with Thierry. The boy was a young World Cup winner. Hardly a massive story that we were playing him. Pace, movement and pure unadulterated talent.
Anyway, Wenger said he’d prefer a spread of scorers. Which is fine. But let’s get them scoring ASAP!
Right, that’s me done. See you tomorrow.
Pete

Great Bamford’s gonna be even more insufferable than usual. Also technically speaking Bam him scoring on his debut doesn’t mean he’ll be French number twobehind Benzema just yet

  2. Bamford10

No need to hype the lad, but my wager that he replaces Giroud as France’s #2 CF in the next year is looking pretty good, I’d say.

Can’t wait for Goondawg and Mystic to go by more fitting monikers.

  3. Samesong

Martial has all the tools to improve at United just gotta watch the injuries

Pace and touch is what you need up front. And he has that also with an eye for goal.

    Big up to the lad.

  4. Cesc Appeal

What a goal from Benteke, and then Martial as well, really chuffed for him just as I was for Sterling the other week, talented young player who gets all that media weight thrown on him because of his price tag and people making assumptions etc…must feel tremendous right now.

  5. tunnygriffboy

    Bamf

Don’t agree with you about Benteke. Fantastic goal but he’s not done much so farthis season tbf.

I love being right . . . sorts of sums things up with you really. It’s one goal from the pair of them. Talk about knee jerk. Benteke was described by the Belgian national coach as a lampost when they played against Wales. Judge at the end ofthe season not one goal in a game in which he has done very little. Objectivity not confirmation bias 🙂 🙂 I know you can do it.

Apparently Naismith is the best striker in the league 🙂

  6. Bamford10

    WE

False. He just hasn’t scored. You, like certain others here, make the mistake of judging a CF simply on whether he has scored. This is silly. One must judge him on all of his touches, passing percentage and on how he takes the chances he is given (and the quality of those chances).

Benteke’s touches have been excellent, and he hasn’t really had all that many chances — he certainly hasn’t missed many obvious ones (a la Giroud or Walcott).

  7. Bamford10

    Tunny

That simply means he wasn’t working hard enough for Belgium. Giroud is a lamppost because he has neither pace nor athleticism; when Benteke is a “lamppost,” it’s only because he’s being lazy. That can be changed; absence of pace and athleticism cannot.

As a drunk Winston Churchill once said to an ugly woman: ‘I may be drunk, but in the morning I shall be sober, whereas you, Madam, will still be ugly.”

  8. tom

Here’s another platitude that is relevant.
    Familiarity breeds contempt.
We study our team with such concentration and we see the imperfections.
It’s a phenomena common to all fans but gooners seem to do it more.
Subsequently other team’s players get lauded above our own.
Just take a stroll on other club blogs to see what I mean.
Giroud and Walcott are highly rated on the Liverpool site.
City’s blog was gloomy as can be last term.
    Just making an observation.

  9. Marko

It’ll go Henry hype overdrive for the week or at least till the PSV game. Good goal though but is he worth every penny like Martin Tyler screamed when he scored? Fuck no

  10. WengerEagle

    Bamford

I’ve watched Benteke a lot this season and barring that goal he has failed to impress at all.

His passing is atrocious, he is incapable of beating defenders ‘off the dribble’ as you say and his touch at times is suspect.

For Belgium he has been even worse.

  11. tom

Some Everton fans, a splinter group I presume, thought it productive to fly a banner criticising their owners over the ground today.
One of their main gripes is ambition. Seems they felt their club was due blame for not buying strikers and almost losing Stones.
    Naismith scores three.
    Stones plays a blinder.

    Fans can get disoriented, right?

  12. salparadisenyc

Benteke hasn’t been worth the money as of yet this season, but if a goal was to ever send a player on a rampage of confidence that was surely it. Very similar to Giroud for me, all be it a bit more clinical with better movement.

Wenger needs to take the plunge on a CF eventually. Clear we lack a world class finisher, imagine if we nailed Suarez for the 40+1.

  13. Cesc Appeal

‘Eh…before people think We couldn’t beat a Liverpool this gash United just beat.’

I think the gripe would be we made Liverpool look really good, and they are utterly average.

  14. DaleDaGooner

Cesc but our cb weren’t starters and nerves played in…..let’s also talk about the elephant in the room….Ramsey in the squad at all cost, we don’t threaten most teams because Wenget keeps plugging him in the squad till game over. This needs a visit. Poor Campbell and Ox.

  15. Goondawg

“Benteke’s touches have been excellent, and he hasn’t really had all that many chances — he certainly hasn’t missed many obvious ones (a la Giroud or Walcott).”

Clearly didnt watch him when he played against us then lol

  16. tunnygriffboy

    Bamf

Interesting you say CF shouldn’t be judged soley on goals scored. It’s what you crucify Giroud for. Double standards.

I’ve seen Benteke in four out of the 5 games he’s played this season. He’s been average in all of them. His touch and combination play has not been great. He’s powerful but his movement and link up play isn’t all that. Giroud is a cleverer more intelligent footballer than him.

Bamf you see things as very black and white and look to see things that confirm your opinion. Benteke is not much of an upgrade on Giroud if at all.

Was a great goal tonight but Giroud scored a pretty good one the other week as well.

  17. underrated Coq

    Football fan mentality

Player from our team has a blinder-: ” Yeah he played okay today but lets see how he does in the next three-four games. ”
Player keeps playing well-: ” Fine he’s played good till now but lets see how he does against team X or team Y ( usually the top teams )”
Player impresses even against top teams-: ” Lets see him maintain this level for a run of games, then judge him ”
Player is consistently good-: ” He’s only played well for a few months. Lets see him do that over a season or two ”
Player beats any hurdle thrown at him-: ” He’s done well but still not good enough to be our first choice. I want that shiny new player X to be brought in to replace him “.

Player from some other team has a 15 minute blinder-: ” This guy is the real deal, he’s the all-round package and better than whatever we’ve got. Can’t believe we’ve no signed him. I’ll keep rooting for this player, I just know he’s gonna be amazing. “

  18. Cesc Appeal

    Dale

Well, I disagree a bit because I think Gabriel should be our starting CB. Nerves, ffs, come on, wasn’t our glorious leader banging on all summer about our cohesion and mental strength.

Any time we drop the ball it’s now going to be down to nerves? Lost to West Ham, nerves, play atrociously against Liverpool, nerves. We made Liverpool look brilliant, it was the most annoying thing sat there listening to commentators saying ‘the Liverpool revival is real,’ no, it’s just the annual Arsenal malaise ‘is real.’

There are so many ‘elephants in the room’ the Emirates is a f*****g zoo, would be nice to talk about them all.

  19. Thank you and goodnight

    @Tom

ha ha ha ha ha. Yeah Liverpool fans are desperate for giroud and Walcott ha ha ha ha ha. Fucking priceless. Almost on par with revvin’s missus and kallstrom. ha ha ha ha.

  20. Cesc Appeal

    Tunny

You can’t blame Chambers for our showing against Liverpool, we played better in the second half but it’s just ignoring the bigger problem to take the simplistic root and say ‘Chambers was the problem.’

  21. salparadisenyc

Whose to say what will “change us”. Benteke could walk into our setup with the service Giroud gets and score 30.

    What’s certain, Giroud will not.

  22. Cesc Appeal

    Sal

    Agreed.

Got to be careful when you compare Giroud to another ST who isn’t at a massive club as people did with Benteke at Villa, Giroud has no competition and receives world class service every single game.

  23. tunnygriffboy

    Underrated

Another grwat post . You’re on fire tonight. You been on the sensible tablets or what 🙂 🙂

    Cesc

Do you not think Chambers performance in that 1st half v lpool gave the players and everyone in the ground and watching on tv the jitters ?

  24. Cesc Appeal

    Tunny

    No.

If you’re a senior player and you see a youngster like Chambers playing badly you rally around him…what on Earth does it say about our team’s ‘cohesion’ and ‘mental quality’ if the whole lot collapse because a 20 year old is having a dodgy game?

    It’s a quick out I think.

  25. tom

The truth is nobody predicted Chelsea to start so badly.
Yet people still feel confident to predict Arsenal’s future.

There are so many factors, a few probabilities, no certainties.
The reasons we keep watching and guessing. Yes, guessing.

Arsenal have exceeded Le Grove expectations last two seasons yet nobody here will admit improvement.

I can’t guess how the season finishes but can see real progress.

  26. MidwestGun

I think we should stick with Theo at the moment given our choices. We need movement to aim at. Ya… Theo isn’t exactly Cf material but Giroud is so limiting. And Giroud is big enough to push Cb’s around as a sub late when they are tired and we throw crosses into the box. . I have more confidence in Theo improving in his finishing then Giroud, sadly.

  27. tunnygriffboy

    Sal

How can you say Benteke would score 30 goals in our set up ? Very very few strikers score 30 goals in a season. Aguero 26 last season. I’ve seen 4 of Benteke’sgames this season and his all round game has been average

Please don’t think this is a huge defence of Giroud. I am very aware of his limitations. He is a much more intelligent footballer than Benteke. Last season his record wasn’t bad.

While I’m appearing to stick up for our players. Theo’s last 11 starts has yielded 11 goals.

  28. Thank you and goodnight

    @Tom

I predict….no I bet you that under wenger we will never win the league again. And if I’m wrong I’m willing to bend over and let 60000 supporters fuck me at the Emirates. Arsenal’s seasons under wenger are rinse and repeat.

  29. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

That’s a fair comment about senior players. That should have been up to Cech and Santi ( who had a stinker ). Awful first half, put it right second half, should have snuck the win.

  30. Up 4 grabs now

Just back from the game, without butland in goal that’s 5-6 goal win today.
Both Theo and giroud were wasteful today so it could and should have been even more.

At home we should be playing Theo and giroud up top, and play either a diamond or old fashioned 442. Unless it’s against utd, city or in the champions league.

Ramsey was poor again, and contributed very little, time for a spell on the bench.
Also coquelin was easily man of the match!
Oh and Chelsea lose again, joy!

  31. salparadisenyc

“Arsenal have exceeded Le Grove expectations last two seasons yet nobody here will admit improvement.”

Not sure i’d agree with this this, once Ozil came in and we won a cup, then repeated it with Sanchez Le Grove never been more optimistic. Wenger’s added the pressure on himself and the players by not adding and outfield player this summer.

Next weeks encounter will go a long way to say how this season’s going to go for me.
Pretty apparent we could achieve great things with this squad if it was fully fleshed out, which 90% of us along with literally every pundit said in June. Yet Wenger kept the bank full and touted cohesion (which im sick of hearing).

  32. MidwestGun

We will never know how another striker would do in our setup as long as we roll with hope and cohesion. That’s the sad part as this team is creating chances out the ying/yang.

  33. Davido

Wondering where the RCB (Replace Coquelin Brigade) are today; dude’s been excellent all season.
Sucks that we’re stuck wondering where we could be with a potent, quick striker upfront. Another season of Alexis crucifying himself for Wenger would be pathetic but oh well!

  34. salparadisenyc

    Tunny

Missed the point a bit, I didn’t say Benteke would score 30, just pointing out well never now how good many of these player would perform in our setup. With the service Walcott received today, another striker would be on a hat trick.

Think Benteke and Giroud are quite similar, except Benteke’s never been afforded the service LOreal has.

  35. tom

    Thank you and goodnight,
    Not the type to bet.
If I did, and you lost, all I’d want is an admission you were wrong.

You think 60000 gooners want to bugger you?!

  36. MidwestGun

You think 60000 gooners want to bugger you?!
    _________
Hahaha Tom… obviously you’ve never seen TY&GN in a dress. He makes Giroud look like the hunchback of Notre Dame.

  37. Ozy

“Wondering where the RCB (Replace Coquelin Brigade) are today; dude’s been excellent all season.”

Don’t worry – they’ll speak up the second Coquelin has a poor game. Right now, they’re too busy praising the debutants and rookies of other teams while blasting our players.

Somebody on here said Iheanachos is going to be a mega star. Another said Martial will soon displace Giroud in the French team. The second these two players have poor games (not that Iheanachos is going to get any game time anyway), they’ll start talking about something else. Like how great of a dribbler Benteke is.

  38. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

Sorry to add again. The problem wasn’t just Chambers it was that both him and Gabriel were played together at last moment. It did make us a bit disorganised at the back. Second half it looked more solid.

  39. tom

Finishing 5th would be disappointing. Not reason to get militant.

Do you think keeping AFC in Europe for 17 years straight has merit and is reason to respect AW, or could anyone could have done the same.

  40. Up 4 grabs now

Would still have signed Benteke, he got 49 goals in 101 games for a piss poor villa side.

He is playing in an awful Liverpool side with brenda’ s tactics.
Benteke is a cross between Theo and giroud. And with our midfielders assisting, I bet would get 20-25 goals.

At the end of the day it would have been better to have him than to have £32 million Sat in the bank!

  41. daz

“Somebody on here said Iheanachos is going to be a mega star. Another said Martial will soon displace Giroud in the French team. The second these two players have poor games (not that Iheanachos is going to get any game time anyway), they’ll start talking about something else. Like how great of a dribbler Benteke is.”

    Lol that was all bamford

  42. Cesc Appeal

    Tunny

No, not for me, sorry. I think that’s just an easy excuse for us playing in the same way we had done since the beginning of the season except this time against slightly better opponents so our laid back, lethargic, complacent, tired looking style was exploited more.

If you’re happy though with us and just see little excuses like ‘a bit jittery’ or ‘too wasteful’ after a game, that’s cool, not ragging on your beliefs, not for me though.

  43. vicky

    Just saw Martial goal.

Well, he could not have dreamt of a better goal on debut. I don’t give a shit about Henry comparison but that goal was Henriesque.

  44. Cesc Appeal

It’s funny, I saw a comment on an article that said ‘this is the most happy I’ve been with the GK, defence and CDM in years.’

Funny, goals were never really an issues for us along with flair and style during the ‘I’m an artist stand back’ Wenger era, it was always calamitous keeping, shaky defences and no CDM.

Now we have a great GK, solid back four and a good CDM, it’s now the tip of the spear that was always so sharp that is suddenly the issue…sigh.

  45. Cesc Appeal

    Up4

    Interesting isn’t it.

By design, or by fault…hmm. I don’t think it’s deliberate as some do, but I do think it arises out of Wenger’s idealism, that the sides strengths will cover for the weaknesses instead of trying to address those weaknesses in the market for the most part.

  46. tunnygriffboy

    Sal

Agree in that we don’t know what they could do. They may rip it up. On the other hand they find the step up in quality and expectation to much for them. It is Wenger’s decision to find the player that will adapt well to it. Rightly he is judged on this

One thing is certain Aguero would score a shedload.

What do you think of stat heard on radio today that in Theo’s last 11 starts he’s scored 11 goals ? Got to be a bit sh.t having everyone telling you you’re not good enough and not up to it all the time from everywhere. I hope those goals today gi e them confidence and while I agree we need a top striker I understand totally why Wenger is praising them and bigging them up in the media.

Looooool. Chelsea plastics out in force on the radio asking for Mourinho to go.

  47. Up 4 grabs now

Cesc, I don’t think he does it deliberately, I just think he’s that stubborn, that he believes he can win trophys without a complete squad.
Then he can turn around and say I told you so.

  48. Redtruth

A highly skilled and astute manager after 17 attempts straight would gave won the Champions league by now.

The fact Wenger gains access to the Champions league is down to the rules of the Competition and more to do with the quality of the Premier league.

  49. Goondawg

It’s bad enough the media are hyping up Martial as the “new Henry” (fuck off there’s only one) but now that has seeped into this blog. King Titi scored 228 goals in his career, theres bound to be more than a few Martial will score as “henryesque”

Lets let the kid play 90 mins first, which I dont think he has done in his career. Good goal, but Liverpool were pressing for the winner and their defence was shocking to be frank. Claims that he is the Thierry after 20 mins of football is frankly a pisstake.

Benteke… Wow. The guy had a shit game overall and has had a stinker of a season, if scoring a bicycle kick is what it takes to be a great striker then look no further than Giroud’s bicycle kick against Palace.

  50. Leedsgunner

I would absolutely love it if we beat the Chavs with a clean sheet. A boring park the bus defensive 1 nil to the Arsenal would be just great.

Another thing, I haven’t heard all the post match interviews yet but I have to say a big well done to Wenger for not rising to mock Maureen. I’m sure Maureen would not grant him the same courtesy.

Let’s not sink to Chelsea’s sad pathetic level.

  51. Thank you and goodnight

    @Midwest

ha ha ha. Your not wrong I rock a mini skirt 😀

    @Tom

I have no fear of being wrong as I’ve heard the same soundbites from you wenger supporters for last 5 years and we WOB’s always get proven right. Next year you’ll be saying exactly the same thing.

  52. Up 4 grabs now

On Chelsea, I hope Maureen stays, because without the transfer window to rescue him it will only get worse.

Next week is now a massive game. As long as we don’t go
Gung ho and sit back a bit we can hit them on the break, instead of the other way around.
Big but, but we could be 9 clear and they could be 14 behind city, abramovic might get an itchy trigger finger again!

  53. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

I think it was a poor performance first half. Other than the disallowed goal the first half was a disaster like West Ham. After a good win v Palace it was disappointing to be so poor. Perhaps I should have said the poor performance was compounded by the disjointed defence. In that first half only Cech, Coquelin and individually Gabriel ( not as a defensive unit) had positive marks. Second hakf though not great we did enough to get a winner.

Out of interest in some games couldn’t Theo start right with Giroud up top like they have in the past or is that a thing we’re not likely to see ?

  54. Cesc Appeal

Next week is a massive game, really big, can we finally show a ruthless streak and some mental fortitude in a big game away at Chelsea and take out a wounded beast…or will it be same old Arsenal?

    Big game.

  55. salparadisenyc

    Tunny

    Interesting stat on Walcott.
Guess one could argue if we signed him for £25m his summer everyone would be ecstatic.

Limited player for me, yet valuable to have in the squad…. if that makes sense.
Not remotely clinical enough to take the step to the next level the club needs to make a stormer on the title.

Aguero would certainly score a shedload, as would Suarez and likely Benz.

Yearning for the day when Wenger gets all the pieces aligned… haven’t been this close since 08… when we were again a couple pieces shy of the title. Thematic.

  56. Cesc Appeal

    Tunny

Just think the team is playing with the same complacency the manager displayed during the summer, not really surprising.

Don’t really know/care with our options there, we know their ability level, they will get chopped and changed but, is what it is.

  57. Cesc Appeal

That’s the disaster, Klopp to Liverpool, Ancelotti to United, Guardiola to City.

And we’re sat here like, ‘you can’t expect a manager to fall from the sky and sort out your problems.’

  58. Leedsgunner

I really hope we don’t buckle under the pressure and really press home the advantage. Sadly in the past few years when opportunities came our way to really make our rivals feel the heat, we’ve not managed to do it. This is the time when our boys need to step up and give everything to the cause. No use moaning or regretting about it after. Need to make a statement now.

  59. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

West Ham was as bad as we’ve been in a long while. We not necessarily playing well but are creating a lot of good chances. If they were put away would we be so frustrated at not being top of our game

    Joe

It wasn’t a bicycle kick but it was still a really good finish.

  60. vicky

    Goondawg

Selective reading !!! Nobody has compared Anthony to Henry on this blog.

Saying a goal is Henriesque does not equate to comparing the goalscorer to Henry,

You obviously ignored the part where I said I don’t give a shit about Henry comparison.

    Well done !!!

  61. Up 4 grabs now

Cesc I’m not sure about guardiola to city. Pellergrini is decent, will probably win the league this year and has just signed a new 3 year deal.
First choice for us would be ancelotti then pep.

  62. Thank you and goodnight

    @Cesc

Yes but have any of them built a new stadium single handedly while still running Arsenal single handedly with a transfer budget of £2.50 and a button? 😀

  63. Cesc Appeal

    Tunny

‘If they were put away would we be so frustrated at not being top of our game.’

How many years have we said Arsenal aren’t clinical enough, how long have we looked to replace Giroud, you can’t spend all summer saying you couldn’t find a quality forward option and then say we’re weak in front of goal…

  64. Leedsgunner

    Cesc

“That’s the disaster, Klopp to Liverpool, Ancelotti to United, Guardiola to City.”

    Here’s a song to cheer you up… 🙂

    There’s only one Arsene Wenger
    There’s only one Arsene Wenger
    There’s only one Arsennnne Wenger

  65. Up 4 grabs now

Brenda might be around for a few weeks yet. The bindippers have a couple of easy home games before a tasty run of Everton chelsea spurs Southampton, palace, city and Swansea.
    Gone by November I reckon.

  66. MidwestGun

Thank God there is only one Aw. … if Stan could clone him. … I’m sure he would.
I was actually scared to type that. … don’t want to give a billionaire any ideas.

  67. vicky

““That’s the disaster, Klopp to Liverpool, Ancelotti to United, Guardiola to City.”

Kind of disagree here. Just changing managers does not change the fortune of a team. Liverpool are way off from having a decent squad. You look at the players they have and the way they play. I don’t see any manager coming in and changing their fortune around.

City have a great squad and will probably win the league twice under Pelliagrini. It’s horrifying anyway the squad they have put up. Any manager coming in will work wonders with that squad.

  68. gary

So Steve u believe us not winning the champions league under AW is pathetic..u do realize we’ve never won it .. or have you only just started supporting arsenal this season

  69. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

Not disagreeing with you. I’m frustrated. Just hope confidence grows and conversion rate improves. It’s possible and Alexis is bound to fire. Be nice to start next weekend. Be happier if game was Sunday tbh but it is what it is.

  70. MidwestGun

    Red –
Did you miss Messi’s goal against Mexico last week? Perfectly timed run… volleyed off chest and hit in one motion. Second leading goal scorer of all time in Argentina now with that goal .. I think he will be ok.

  71. Redtruth

    gary

Arsenal have only entered the European Cup twice in their entire history as only WINNERS were allowed to enter the Competition!

Wenger has had SEVENTEEN attempts and failed everytime!! You plum.

  72. salparadisenyc

    Red

At first you’re one man vigilantism leveled at Messi was comedic even fun just for the banter you and Midwest came up with. Now its just pathetic, equatable to Clint firing blanks in the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

Players like that don’t come around very often if ever again. I’m loving having Messi and CR7 in the game at the same time. Not to mention on rival sides.

  73. gary

Yes red I also remember battering Milan away and being at the bernabeau with that Henry game.
Actually I don’t even know why I’m responding..for anyone not to rate messi shows u know fuc all
