Perfect preseason.

2 trophies and the season hasn’t even started!

I didn’t catch the whole of the Emirates Cup game. But the parts that I did catch made for impressive viewing.

We’ve beaten one of the best sides in Germany and we destroyed the second best team in France.

Sure preseason doesn’t account for much in the grand scheme of things, but this preseason gives us a full compliment of players to pick from heading into the Charity Shield. We’ll have some continuity of our approach that was so successful at the tail end of last summer. We’ll also have a monster truck load of confidence.

Makes me a bit nervous. It’s all going a little too well. Where’s that banana skin?

News buzzing around the airwaves is that Pep Guardiola is going to takeover at City next season. That makes me worry. He’ll get things ticking over there. So this feels like a very good season to make some heavy progress before things get really tasty. I wonder where Klopp will go?

There’s still no major news on the transfer front. Madrid haven’t done any major damage in the transfer market yet. United have chilled their beans and don’t seem to have managed a striker purchase. Chelsea haven’t done anything major for once.

Surely there’s more to come from this summer?

So will definitely have a good post for you tomorrow! Delayed because of match noise.

Tune in.

No guarantees and purely speculative but the idea of Real not selling Benzema if they couldn’t bring in someone like Aguero or whoever isn’t necessarily true. Just a theory but certainly it looks as though Ronaldo will be the number 9 this season for them not just cause as he gets older he’d be better suited to be a striker but also in Bale James and Isco being played more naturally and Jese, Cheresev (sp?) and Vasquez there also they’re more than stacked creatively out wide and behind. Basically imo if they were offered enough they’d accept it cause they’re not desperate to keep him. Also worst case scenario they sell Benzema and couldn’t find anyone else they’d just activate the clause in Morata’s contract and bring him back. Just a theory

  2. Bamford10

Even if the current squad were to go uninjured for the season, we won’t do better than third without improving on Giroud and we’ll do nothing of note in the CL.

Those saying otherwise are simply sprinkling the same fairy dust they have been sprinkling for years now. The pattern:

    (1) fairy dust/magical thinking prior to season
    (2) team accomplishes nothing of note in the EPL or CL
    (3) excuses, rationalizations and promises re next season (after season end)

Over and over and over again, for the past 8-9 years.

  3. MadeToLoveMagic

nasri Yeah expect you are right about samper, although his father allegedly phoned up arsenal to offer his services and appaerently both player and father regret not coming over with Toral and Bellerin when they had the chance… (could all be bollocks though of course…

Either Samper is good enough for the Barca team this year or he stays in the 3rd division with Barca B. If barca decide he is not ready yet to challenge Busquets then we should swoop in there maybe pick him up on loan with an option to buy……. Will be a great player from what I’ve heard….

So if he is really just using us a bargaining tool , then maybge we should test barca’s mettle

You are saying things will be fine with arteta , and yes in an ideal world that could be the case but remembeer Arteta has been out a whole year. I don’t think he is going to have what it takes this year…. i hope im wrong that is just my feeling… Obs people at the club think he is ok

  4. Goondawg

I’m so hyped for the Reine-man

He’s a proper cheeky bastard! Imagine if you were 17, coming to a new club in a new league, in a new country and making your debut in front of 60 odd k not being fazed at all.. Truly a talent for the future

  5. Marko

SRG very important people don’t read too much into preseason it’s all about fitness. Ricardo Rodriguez getting skinned by an energetic Chamberlain after 60-70 mins doesn’t take anything away from how good he actually is

  6. Klauspoppe

    SRG

Can be down to number if factors.

    1. Its preseason
2.Rodriguez played the game day before
    3.Wolfsburg played a high line
4.Ox just came on the pitch
5.Ox is just faster than most players in the world
6.Alba got skinned by Robben in WC. Puts things into perspective.

  7. Naijagunner

Lets ask ourselves some basic questions

1 Who will be the elite level striker that replaces Benzema at madrid?

2 Who replaces Lewa at Bayern?

Besides these two who are the real top level strikers that are available ? (please don’t say Charlie Austin)

The market is filled with money but no players, we are not the only club with money who can do with upgrades

  8. Bamford10

It’s true that I don’t like Giroud, but what I really don’t like is doing nothing of note in the league or in the CL — year after year after year.

That’s the real problem, and Giroud is just one of the key factors.

  9. Bamford10

    Naija

One, Wenger has had three years to improve on Giroud but has failed to do so, year after year after year. You simply want to let him off the hook, make excuses.

Two, I once said here that Giroud is not even a top ten CF and this rightly provoked no argument. That means at least three things: one, there are at least ten CFs out there better than Giroud; two, any manager who was genuinely interested in winning the league would’ve found a replacement at some point in last three years; three, there are even CFs b/t #11 and #16 who could give us more than Giroud and thus would be or would’ve been worth a reasonable “punt”.

As it is, your ilk will make excuses, we’ll have to watch two inadequate CFs (Giroud, Walcott) for another year, and we’ll do nothing of note, yet again, in the EPL and CL.

Cannot wait till Wenger goes and this silly charade comes to an end.

Btw, anyone know what’s up with Bielik?

  10. Nasri's Mouth

MTLM: nasri Yeah expect you are right about samper, although his father allegedly phoned up arsenal to offer his services

Probably did. There’s othing like focusing the minds of your current bosses than by contacting a potential new one…

  11. Nasri's Mouth

Bamford10: Two, I once said here that Giroud is not even a top ten CF and this rightly provoked no argument. That means at least three things:

    Four things actually

    4. You’re a boring twat who constantly goes on and on about Giroud not being good enough every fucking day since you appeared on here, and no-one can be arsed even reading your posts about him let alone talking to you about it anymore

  12. Willow Wilson

    SRG
“Our goal output outside of Giroud / Sanchez is worrisome”.

    SRG
“Wenger himself told we need 10-15 goals . In the last 10 years only one team scored less than 72 goals and won the title”

Don’t disagree we need to score more. Or that we need to concede less. However, we will.

Why? Because there is a difference between the first and second half of the season and just counting the two colums on the league table does not tell you that. I am not being defensive, I am trying to add balance to an argument.

    Goals Scored 71
Last season we scored two goals less than Chelsea. This was despite Giroud missing a third of the season and Theo almost all of the PL season. We also lost Ozil for long periods and his assists. Despite this, we still fell just 2 short of Chelsea.

We also had the highest number of different goalscorers, which is relevant. This suggests to me those 10 goals we may or may not need, are not going to be difficult to obtain. (I acknowledge that adding another goalscorer would increase those chances).

    Goals conceded 36
Defensively, the start of the season was a nightmare. Remember we had Monreal covering Kos at Centre half, chambers at right back due to losing Debouchy and we had to swap Ospina for Shezzer. No stability. Defensive stability is key, of all the units you need an understanding back there.

Second half of the season, we had a steady back 4 with Kos and Mert, Monreal and Bellerin. Le Coq was sitting in front. What happened? We were harder to score against:

First 19 games we conceded 23 goals
Last 19 games we conceded 13 goals.

Note: For comparison, in the last 19 games Chelsea conceded 18 goals, 5 more than us.

The point I am trying to make is that what we start this season with is totally different from what we started last season with. We have better cover and as Nasri mentioned the other day, as a team we press better.

So I don’t think goal difference is going to be the issue. The difference is going to be keeping players fit, although our squad depth is a lot better now.

  13. Klauspoppe

“We also had the highest number of different goalscorers, which is relevant”

Umm we had 4 different CF options starting last season. If we play our best players every game like you say wouldn’t that figure come down… a lot?

Would it still be relevant then?

  14. SRG#FreeN5

@Willow Yeah I agree that we can improve with in the squad. In the second half of the season we scored 37 goals in 19 games which is still short .

We certainly have personnel who can improve their goal tally. We need two of Ox/Walcott/Ozil/Welbeck to hit 8-12 goals , which is very much possible.

  15. Willow Wilson

    SRG
    Yes, agree mate.

Ox and Theo will not only score goals but create an additional threat too. Personally, I think the dynamic in the team suits both these players and now there is no excuse for them not to deliver.

  16. qna

Again. People take statistics out of context and come to garbage conclusions. The difference between Arsenal and the other top teams are our results against the other top 8 teams. This is why Chelsea and City are more than happy to go to a tough away match and take a point – a win from a goal on the counter being a bonus.

Arsenal being a flat track bully is able to smash lower teams regularly. Especially at home. This pads our goals scored tally and also pads the goal tally of 2nd tier strikers like Giroud. So you get people putting 2 and 2 together to get 5. We do have a clear goal scoring problem, against the strong teams we play both in the league and the champions league.

Of course we could also strenghthen at the back. It is against these top teams that we get found wanting hence Henry and Co calling for a new GK, CB and DM as well as the world class CF.

  17. zeus

I’m not exactly sure who United think they have signed in Romero, but as an Argentina fan I can say he is not a great keeper.

If he is being brought in to replace De Gea, that is a really poor purchase. In truth, he is only Argentina number 1 because Argentina hasn’t produced a decent keeper since Roberto Abandanzierri. (sp?)

  18. Marko

but what I really don’t like is doing nothing of note in the league or in the CL — year after year after year.

But Bam you’ve done fuck all in the champions league and league mate. When’s the last time you scored

  19. zeus

I like the Ox. Took his goal really well.

I think he will start the season out wide ahead of Theo. Makes silly mistakes, but I hope that he gets a full season to iron that crap out.

Shame that we will have to run Coq into the ground though.

  20. Willow Wilson

    Zeus
“I like the Ox. Took his goal really well.”

    Very true.

There was an audible gasp in the stadium every time he got the ball, he was skinning Lyon for fun. It was his sheer power more than anything. He provided a real threat out wide and the lad needs a run of games to get his rhythm in the team. He could be a very influential player if he stays fit.

  21. Naijagunner

    @ Bamford

Am sure your issue with giroud is simply he not being a good “Athlete” which is fine, u are welcome to your views. I for one recognizes his strengths not just his weaknesses . Bear in mind i am no fan of his, i believe his limitations severely affects the way we play.

Having said all that, it bothers on obsession for you to mention Giroud every time u post on here . For a 15 goal a season 9 million pound striker, he is more than doing his job to the best of his abilities, that should be recognized .

  22. MidwestGun

Personally, I’m cautiously optimistic after viewing the games on tape delay. (By the way, the only top team not to be shown live in US during preseason, why Stan? You F’n wanker)

However, our season is going to hinge on the ability of Ox and Coquelin staying healthy and in form. Seems like a big risk to take when we have the necessary funds to insure against it. If Ox is out for an extended period we end up playing Ramsey, Wilshere, or Theo attacking wide. Ok but not ideal.
At this point also imo we should play Walcott at Cf and allow him to interchange with Ox and Sanchez at CF in a free flowing front 3. Seen enough of Giroud to know we can use him against the bottom tier teams and as a bench option. Would keep him fresher also.
Also, we haven’t seen how we are going to address teams who pack the box with defenders and counter. As in preseason most teams are looking to play a more open game .

So it’s obvious we have improved on the cohesion front but is it enough to overcome deficiencies and the inevitable injury? And can we improve our record against top 4 and packed defending? Remains to be seen.

Starting the season without Sanchez in the mix will change the dynamic when he comes back also. So hopefully we get off to a flying start where his return is a bonus.

Side note Also. .. what was the point of playing Ozil both matches?

Anyhow, it’s preseason. … so… not reading much into it. I mean United smashed Barcelona, and Januzaj played like Messi. And I don’t think United is better then Barca.

Also, I’m worried about N5…. send up a flare if your ok.

    Midwest out. …..

lol.. whatever happened to that guy who used to sign off with all his comments?

  23. gambon

Willow is full of what ifs and excuses for why we didnt challenge Chelsea last season.

Doesnt ever tell the real truth…..better players make better teams, which score more points.

Any argument that boils down to “if we didnt have injuries” and “if we take this 19 game run and extrapolate it out” is beyond re.tarded.

Injuries happen,a PL season has never been, and will never be, 19 games long.

I keep seeing “well if we started as well as we finished we wouldve won the PL”

This is bollocks. We wouldve scored 84 points, which only wouldve won the PL once in the last 12 seasons.

So be careful about championing the status quo.

  24. VP

A few impressive displays by some our youngsters over the weekend.

Give it a few more games and couple of months and they’ll be better than Welbeck.

The referencing to Giroud might be getting repetitive but rightly so. £200m in the bank and we’re going into yet another season with him as our main CF. Its just an embarrassment to the club.

    ….No excuses!

There has been ample time to bring a quality CF since RVP’s departure.

Anyone being paid £8mill a year and not capable of bringing in a better CF deserves every bit of scrutiny put their way and should be continually reminded of this. It’s just not acceptable. He’s not even good enough to lead the line for spurs.

It is almost damn right impossible to win the league with a striker of this pedigree. Last time I remember anyone doing so was Man Utd, with Cole. Times have changed considerably since then though and such shitness would not be tolerated in the modern day, unless of course you hold a french passport and play for Arsenal.

  25. Nasri's Mouth

    @qna

Do you have evidence to back that up ?

I mean it seems a bit weird that ManC wouldn’t try too hard to get a result against a lower league team simply because they know Arsenal wont get results against the top 4/6/8 sides.

  26. Ozy

    N5 still M.I.A.?

He removed me from his PS4 friends list lol. Very odd.

I missed both preseason games. Everybody raving about Reinne-whatever his name is. Kinda premature, don’t you all think? Let’s not get carried away. The Akpom criticism hurts me deeply, though. I had such high hopes for him.

  27. TitsMcGee

Besides these two who are the real top level strikers that are available ? (please don’t say Charlie Austin)”

You and your ilk say this every single year.

  28. Nasri's Mouth

Naijagunner: answer the damn question and forget about me and my ilk

I don’t care about the question. I just want to hear about your talking Moose

  29. TitsMcGee

answer the damn question and forget about me and my ilk”

So that you can spout the same BS that you and your “ilk” have spouted the last 10 years?

Funny how other clubs can sign top strikers but we somehow never can eh?

I’ll bookmark this page so that WHEN we finish no better than 3rd/4th and you are saying the usual “if we bought a better striker we’d be _________” you can try and give an honest answer as to why you flail all over the place.

  30. zeus

We know what a fatigued Giroud looks like, I say give Theo what he wants. He will be completely ineffective against teams that sit deep, but especially for home games, we can risk him through the middle. We can’t afford to run our players into the ground.

BTW, Mourinho accusing Chelsea’s rivals of buying the title has to be the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. A few years ago, a feather would’ve knocked me over, but now I expect these kinds of shenanigans from Jose.

  31. qna

Nasri. Evidence to back which part up? The flat track bully situation? I have shown the points splut between games against top 8 teams and the rest numerous times. Cant recall but basically we drop less than half a point on average against the bottom sides and an avetage of 2 vs top 8 sides. I am positive our goals tally will reflect this and show we scored most of our goals (and conceded fewest) by some margain against the weakest teams.

Evidence to back up Chelsea going away and playing defensively against the bigger sides? City doing the same under Mancini and also the year before last in both their league winning seasons? No evidence mate. Are you disputing this?

  32. Naijagunner

    @ Tits

Talk about keyboard diarrhea…u are all over the place. Give me names that are sitting down waiting to be prized.

Mind you, in as much as i was happy with the Ozil and Sanchez transfers, i have always maintained that the day we buy a player who isn’t being pushed out of his club or benched, that is the day i will gladly admit we have joined the big boys.

  33. TitsMcGee

    http://i.imgur.com/9HRGUi7.jpg

That only slightly improved last year with a victory at City but still added to the loss column with the Chelsea defeat.

The inability to beat the big fish is why we fail every year to even compete for the title. Last season was considered a good season by most AFC fans and we still finished 3rd, couldn’t beat Chelsea, couldn’t beat another weak UTD team in the league and bowed out of UCL at the same stage.

It was a good season because we didn’t get railroaded 6-0,6-3,5-1 etc BUT you can make the argument that those results are irregular even for Wenger’s standards.

Even if he does beat Mou this season what would it prove? That it takes 15 cracks before Wenger wins 1? Mou still coming out roses there.

  34. Nasri's Mouth

    @qna

Well, evidence that we score comparatively more against the lesser sides than the top sides do so that our goal tally is bolstered. evidence that the top teams don’t try just as hard against the lesser sides and score just as many goals

  35. TitsMcGee

Talk about keyboard diarrhea…u are all over the place. Give me names that are sitting down waiting to be prized.”

What about this year and years past?

That is the point that is going over your probably small head.

Whether it’s this season or last or the last X. There is always the excuse of “show me who is available”. i.e Lay off Wenger he needs coddling.

  36. Nasri's Mouth

TitsMcgee: It was a good season because we didn’t get railroaded 6-0,6-3,5-1

No, it was a good season because we finished 3rd and won the FA Cup

  37. gambon

“No, it was a good season because we finished 3rd and won the FA Cup”

Our so called “rivals” would see that as anything but a good season.

Maybe thats a huge part of the problem.

  38. TitsMcGee

No, it was a good season because we finished 3rd and won the FA Cup”

    LOL

Thanks. You never let me down.

  39. salparadisenyc

Pretty simple, no excuses not to give every competition a massive run.

Wenger’s got a settled squad, on fire in the pre season and the budget to sign essentially whichever area he sees fit to strengthen. If he’s content and wants to go forward with this squad as it is? So it goes, Wenger’s call. I’m optimistic but have that ever present twinge that if we don’t follow fully through with our business, at some point we’ll rue that decision. Hoping its not the breaker in a title run if it comes to that.

Several players out there whom certainly strike the right note with our current setup, making us stronger, more resilient and likely add that key match winning moment that we don’t necessarily have atm.

  40. TitsMcGee

Our so called “rivals” would see that as anything but a good season.Maybe thats a huge part of the problem.”

    Exactly.

Good season because we “only” lost 2-0 to Chelsea and we came in 3rd instead of 4th.

    LOL

    Christ almighty.

I just hope we get to play another bottom feeder in the FA Cup final this season.

I suppose the excuse then would be “we are defending FA cup champions so we have to expect there would be a letdown”

  41. MidwestGun

Tancredi Palmeri and Mourinho … same level of trolling.
36 days left in the transfer window.
So we still have 35 more days of scouting before we get serious.
    🙂

  42. TitsMcGee

I’m optimistic but have that ever present twinge that if we don’t follow fully through with our business, at some point we’ll rue that decision. ”

If Wenger goes through the rest of this window and makes no further additions then there will be absolutely ZERO doubt that he has no intentions of even trying to win the league. ZERO.

To think he can make up a 10 point gap with 1 player(even if that is Cech) is beyond naive especially considering that our rivals aren’t standing still.

The ironic part is the same Akbs that are championing Wenger’s decision to not bolster DM will be the first to spout the injury excuse WHEN(not if) Coq gets injured due to being overplayed. Mark it down.

  43. Nasri's Mouth

TitsMcgee: Good season because we “only” lost 2-0 to Chelsea and we came in 3rd instead of 4th.

Come on, lets get it right shall we and stick to the facts

4th biggest side getting 3rd AND winning the FA Cup.

What exactly were you expecting at the beginning of the season?

Oh yes, I remember, you were telling me how managers like Rodgers have overtaken Wenger…

    how did that go ?

  44. Nasri's Mouth

    @titsmcgee

    nice image.

Unfortunately it’s got fuck all to do with whether or not last season was a good season overall, so utterly meaningless as usual

    wink wink

  45. Nasri's Mouth

    @titsmcgee

And while you’re in a talkative mood, which strikers would you sign this summer to improve us ?

Come on, lets hear your ideas

  46. TitsMcGee

What exactly were you expecting at the beginning of the season?Oh yes, I remember, you were telling me how managers like Rodgers have overtaken Wenger… how did that go ?”

    LOL

    1.Lies do not become you.

You are(should be) better than that.

    2. The idea of what is expected and what we could be are two different things. Don’t be an idiot.

    3. 3rd place a year after winning the league etc is not a failure. 10 years of no EPL is failure end of. You can spin it anyway you want.

4.No UCL for the 18th year in a row(still miles off)

    5. 1 point out of 4 v Chelsea.

    6. 1 point out of 4 v UTD(not a vintage UTD team either)

7.Ousted by mighty Monaco in the UCL.

    Good season though eh?

If we finished 2nd I’d love to see what you describe that as.

That’s a pretty mediocre mentality you have there.

  47. Klauspoppe

Ionno when we finish the season the same apologists come out and say we finished where our budget dictates.

As soon as the season finishes the same apologists ramp up cohesion when summer gets all quiet on the transfer front.

But they also forget United had a new team and new manager but they spent more than us so, they should finish higher than us but they didn’t have cohesion but they have the biggest budget but but but…

The same inconsistencies Giroud has in front of goal.

  48. TitsMcGee

Unfortunately it’s got fuck all to do with whether or not last season was a good season overall, so utterly meaningless as usual”

    Actually it does.

Because since we STILL couldn’t beat the big fish and “only” lost 2-0 to Chelsea and still finished 3rd/4th it’s a good season right?

So less points and further behind league leaders with the inability to beat UTD/Chelsea equate to a good season because we finished 3rd and happened to win an FA Cup?

You forget Wigan won the FA Cup as well right?

    Curious.

  49. Klauspoppe

“According to you all is well based on our “net spend””

I can assure you NM was actually the one to rebuke this against Willow the senile cunt.

  50. Naijagunner

You forget Wigan won the FA Cup as well right?

You also forgot your rose smelling mourinho was dancing around like David with the golden ark when he won the carling cup.

But continue belittling Arsenal trophies….u never let us down too

  51. Nasri's Mouth

TitsMcgee: 1.Lies do not become you.

Are you sure you don’t remember mentioning Rodgers when I spoke with you about Wenger matching his spend with his performances,

Something to do with how I said if Wenger matched the spend of the top clubs he’d be winning as much ?

And how you replied that wouldn’t happen now because managers like Rodgers have overtaken him.

    Still denying it ?

And now 3rd place and an FA Cup win wasn’t a good season BECAUSE OF THE LAST 9 SEASONS ? How utterly idiotic does that sound ?

So once again, the 4th biggest side gets 3rd place and wins the FA Cup is a good season.

Doesn’t mean it’s a great season, doesn’t mean we couldn’t have done better, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t aim higher this season, but yes it was a good season.

  52. Emiratesstroller

I think that some of the critics who are always slagging the club and in particular Giroud need to get real.

Last season was in two halves as I pointed out in earlier posts. Our form in first
half of season was poor primarily because we were overdependent on Sanchez
to score goals in absence of both Giroud and Walcott. Also we were struggling
in defence due to Wenger’s failure to recruit an experienced third string CB
notwithstanding the niggling injury to Koscielny and his continued dependence on Flamini and Arteta in midfield.

Since January our style of play has changed as has our performance level.
Chelsea are the only team who marginally out performed us by one point in
second half of season and our defensive record has improved dramatically
conceding just 13 goals in 19 games with only two teams managing 2 goals
    against us.

The question to be asked is not so much how many new players do we need
this season but can we improve our performance on what we have now got?

We have recruited a world class goalkeeper in Cech. Therefore we are able
to match now most of our competitors in goalkeeping department. Ospina
has been retained and will provide solid backup. He did very little wrong last
season so we have two good goalkeepers.

All our defenders are now match fit with the return of Debuchy. Debuchy will
provide perhaps more defensive solidity in critical games.

The arrival of Coquelin changed the dynamics in midfield. As I have said many times we do need backup to him in case he gets injured.

I think that the options of Ozil,Ramsey,Ox and Wilshire now that they are all
fit will allow us to rotate better and increase our goalscoring productivity in
midfield. We should not forget that all 4 of these players were out injured
for considerable periods of the season.

Finally we have now 4 forwards excluding the youngsters who can play up front. Sanchez scored 25 goals in all competitions last season and Giroud despite several months out injured scored 20 goals. You can add to our fire
power Walcott who has been out for almost 2 years and Welbeck who may
have disappointed in his first season, but was nevertheless rated last season
England’s main striker. He should be able to at least double his goalscoring
    potential this season.

I made the point several times that the key to winning titles is replicating our
second half of season form in the defensive department and increasing our
goalscoring performance by 15 goals. I think that is achievable with the resources that we have got.

Obviously if Wenger sorts out DMF position in squad and brings in a top class
striker like Benzema that is a bonus. Wenger has spent very little of his transfer budget so there is still grounds for optimism that he will do some business
there. I don’t think that we will be spending only £11 million in this transfer window despite all the pessimism.

  53. Nasri's Mouth

    TitsMcgee: Actually it does.

    NO IT DOESNT

Because when it comes to LAST SEASON (Hint, not the previous 9, or the previous 4, just last season) the ONLY table that counts is the one with the other NINETEEN sides in it, NOT just the TOP FOUR

So that image was utterly irrelevant

  54. Rosicky@Arsenal

    Tits

    Why u lie

Arsenal got 4 points aginst top 4 in last 5 season in 15 matches .

    It is completly false.

    From my memory

    Arsenal won against

Chelsea at bridge 6/3 in 2012
Chelsea at emirates 3/1 in 2012
Liverpool at Emirates 2/0 in 2014
Drawn with United 1/1 in 2013
Drawn with chelsea at emirates in 2013 and 2014
Defeat City 1 nil at emirates in 2013 Arteta goal
Drawn with city in 2014 2/2

    That is 16 points already.

Above data is from my memory
Year and scores cud b wrong but results are the same i mentioned

Forgot the famous 2 nil at ittehad last year.

Correct me if i am wrong.!!!!

  55. Klauspoppe

“Something to do with how I said if Wenger matched the spend of the top clubs he’d be winning as much ?”

Why isn’t the cunt spending then? Players unavailable?

When did that stop us from tapping up other players? Chamakh to leave on a free, Stealing Park from Lille, Arteta on transfer day, Cesc from Barca academy, Chambers, Ramsey….

  56. Nasri's Mouth

Klauspoppe: But they also forget United had a new team and new manager but they spent more than us so

But it’s up to clubs how they manage (ahem) the change in managers isn’t it. It’s all part of being a PL side.

While it’s a reason why ManU didn’t too well, it’s not an excuse.

    (as I keep saying :D)

  57. Klauspoppe

    Rosicky

Umm Chelsea didn’t finish top 4 in 11/12.

    United weren’t top 4 in 13/14.

I think the guys who posted these stats on TV do their research than punts from memory.

  58. Nasri's Mouth

Klauspoppe: Why isn’t the cunt spending then? Players unavailable?

Well, he certainly should have spent earlier than he did. Money in the bank for at least a season or 2, but the idea he could have matched Chelsea is madness.

They’ve spent a £1billion more than us since 2000. Impossible to match that

As for this summer, I’d imagine if he got the thumbs up from Real Madrid, he’d be spending a few million right now

  59. Nasri's Mouth

Klauspoppe: When did that stop us from tapping up other players?

never 😀 we’re not as bad as some, but we’re not whiter than white when it comes to ‘persuading’ players to come to us

  60. Klauspoppe

“Last season was in two halves as I pointed out in earlier posts.”

I heard that in summer of 2013 and in 2014 oh and this year.

Three years on the pounce. Let’s make it four for the Real trophy.

  61. salparadisenyc

  62. Klauspoppe

“when it comes to ‘persuading’ players to come to us”

Lol tell me about it, it’s like players would love to play for Wenger but at the same time they see the players Wenger has faith in and it might become a turnoff.

  63. Rosicky@Arsenal

    Klauspope

Still it cant be 4 points in 5 years.

The guy who did the research is damn wrong.

First of all he didnt mention its away record and not both home+away fixtures.
Even than i am sure there is some mistake in the table.

  64. Emiratesstroller

    Klauspoppe

We keep on hearing from posters that we should be spending in the transfer
market like Man Utd, Man City and Liverpool.

Can you and others please inform which of the players that these clubs have
bought so far would have improved our squad or more importantly which
players who are likely to be playing regularly for us next season you would wish to offload?

The only player bought sofar by our competitors that I would be remotely
interested in is Schneiderlein, but he is not a solution for DMF cover that we
    perhaps need.

Similarly I have not see many players recruited on the Continent who would
be considered a significant improvement to our squad.

  65. Ozy

Thinking coming in 3rd marks a good season is a complacent, mediocre mentality where second (or in this case, third) best is good enough.

You either want to be the best or want to be good enough. Thinking a 3rd place finish is good aligns with the latter.

Wow – we were third best in the league but Chelsea completely cruised to the title, Man U, Liverpool, and Man City were all broken and inconsistent… we got dismantled in the CL, we crashed out of the Carling Cup, we remained insignificant amongst the elite football teams of the world..

    Yep. 3rd is great. Idiots.

  66. Nasri's Mouth

    @ES

I’d have signed Schneiderlin, if the suggestion that we effectively had first pick was true. Not sure I’d have got into a bidding war with ManU over him though.

I’d have had Sterling over Walcott too, but not for the money ManC spent on him

  67. Klauspoppe

    Emirates

“Can you and others please inform which of the players that these clubs have
bought so far would have improved our squad”

It’s not about who Chelsea or City bought. They finished above us.

The only player we brought in is Cech but that isn’t too much of an upgrade from last season in catching up to the top 2 when Ospina had great stats.

We can talk about how the current squad will have greater cohesion and play better but that applies to everyone else as well.

We can talk about IF our players stay fit but that applies to everyone else as well.

Isn’t it normal for the team that is inferior to upgrade?

Again cohesion works for everyone else.

But some fans become selective in how they apply the cohesion argument re:United.

  68. Nasri's Mouth

Ozy: You either want to be the best or want to be good enough. Thinking a 3rd place finish is good aligns with the latter.

I think there’s a difference between thinking that 3rd place is a good finish at the start of the season and the end.

And of course there’s a difference between fans expectations and the players and manager.

They should be aiming for as high as possible, and at the end should be thinking ‘but what if I’d done this, or that, and I must improve next season’

But as fans, who have basically zero outcome on the teams results, we can be a little more subjective.

I think also it’s important to remember that last season was 3rd AND the FA Cup.

3rd on its own, wouldn’t have been much (if anything) to shout about. Add the FA Cup to it though, and it makes it a good season

  69. wenker-wanger

wankger perfectly on course for 3rd or 4th…guaranteed…..as some have already said it just isnt good enough.
Sure we have sanchez and a very good first 11…but against the best we are so 2nd class as is constantly demonstrated.
Wankger has 200 million to spend, but he has already purchased his one marquee signing (great signing i concede). Without a top quality DM and striker we wont challenge for the big trophies. Sadly predictable, and unnecessary.
Wosrst news of the summer is wankgers statement that he wont retire. What an ego, what a selfish Cnut. If he had any real regard for arsenal he would walk. Let a hungrier, more tactically astute manager take over and he can retire in the glow that he had won a couple of fa cups recently.
WE ARE ARSENAL, WE DESERVE TO HAVE A TEAM THAT CHALLENGES FOR THE PREM, NOT MEEKLY COLLAPSE DURING THE SEASON.
WANKGERS ARSENAL HAS 3RD PLACE WRITTEN ALL OVER IT…..AGAIN

  70. Emiratesstroller

    Ozy

Chelsea cruised the title, because of their form in first half of season.

Our performance level in second half of season more or less matched theirs.

The one criticism that I have got about our performance in second half of season was that Arsenal found it difficult to break down Chelsea, Swansea and
Sunderland when they “parked the bus”.

Sanchez lost form towards end of a very long season and the options to solve that problem were limited.

If all the critics can come up with a solution to that particular problem then I
am sure that we have a potential title winning team.

Incidentally most of the other top teams in EPL have got the same problem.
LVG highlighted it in a recent interview. Matchwinners do not grow on trees.

  71. MidwestGun

E -Stroller is correct in that there is more reason to be optimistic then in the past few seasons. However, Tits is voicing many of the concerns I have about transfers and success against the sides we need to beat. just in his original and patented manner.
    Lol.

I liked Vidal but that ship has sailed off to Germany. The season before I liked Khedira. (Probably a good miss altho ironic he is replacing Vidal at Juve) As for striking CF or right sided attacking mid options I still think we may have a go at someone I hope.
And we need an option besides Arteta or JW, imo in cdm. However AW may try a Santi/Rambo combo platter.

Anyhow, Most times put little credence in the CS but this season we really need the psychological boost.

  72. TitsMcGee

Are you sure you don’t remember mentioning Rodgers when I spoke with you about Wenger matching his spend with his performances,”

Rodgers doing a good job and “overtaken Wenger” are too different arguments. Again, don’t be an idiot. Find any post where I said Wenger has been “overtaken” by Rodgers.

That misreading pretty much sums it up. You took one statement and affixed a completely different meaning because you see red when AFC(read Wenger) is criticized.

  73. northern gooner

Arsenals fortunes changed for the better when the lucky undies were introduced.

If you dont believe me speak to kwik or N5 etc they will confirm this.

  74. Klauspoppe

    NM

I would argue winning the FA cup was a good season, actually great considering it was back to back.

Finishing third doesn’t add or take away the achievements of the FA cup win. Though including it to the FA cup win smells of complacency.

We’re expected to finish top 4 and it isn’t much of an achievement as it is for Newcastle to steer clear from relegation.

  75. Nasri's Mouth

TitsMcgee: That misreading pretty much sums it up. You took one statement and affixed a completely different meaning because you see red

Nope, I didn’t. I said Wenger would be successful if he spent as much as the teams above him, and YOU said he wouldn’t because the world had moved on and used Rodgers as an example.

Now, how about the those strikers that are available?

  76. TitsMcGee

We can talk about how the current squad will have greater cohesion and play better but that applies to everyone else as well.We can talk about IF our players stay fit but that applies to everyone else as well.”

    Exactly.

Buying Cech only closes the gap if everyone else stays still. Unfortunately that is NEVER the case. Wenger just assumes it is.

    Cech- great player still.

Enough on his own to have us challenging? Nope.

Enough to keep us in top 4? Definitely.

Which is why I said earlier. If all Wenger does is buy one player this year then there is ZERO doubt anymore that he’s simply not even trying to win the league. All the stadium/money/cohesion/youth project excuses are out the door.

  77. Nasri's Mouth

    @Klauspoppe

“The one criticism that I have got about our performance in second half of season was that Arsenal found it difficult to break down Chelsea, Swansea and

I blame Giroud’s 2 months scoring drought which coincided with these games.

It’s not like teams didn’t park the bus the whole season and decided to so only for those selected games.

Tactically, playing a high pressing game is much more difficult to park the bus and counter. If we have better players, why not play the same tactic and win with the sheer quality of the squad?

Wenger is a stubborn guy aye?

  81. VP

‘’Can you and others please inform which of the players that these clubs have

    ——————————————————————————————————-

Why can’t we count the previous years….. where money was available and not used?

The club are acting as though they have inherited this £200m over night when we all know that this is not true. Sick of playing this game. Its getting boring. There is always an excuse, every transfer window as to why we are short in certain areas.

It’s the lack of drive and intent displayed in many a year gone by and not just this summer that’s the problem.

You may be able to forgive and forget, but if all that we do is continue to achieve fourth and the FA Cup going forward from this season, its just more of the same and so don’t expect everyone else to. However, I am sure that you will still continue to throw up pathetic excuses to make others feel ungrateful for not agreeing with you.

  82. salparadisenyc

Players whom we should of been in for imo

    Dybala
    Schneiderlin
    Kongdogbia
    Vidal

Think well be adding Pedro to this list shortly. I was all for adding Sterling, but not at that cost.

Love the notion that since Chelsea haven’t spent, somehow justifies our summer thus far. Having Costa up front they’ve taken a punt on Falcao for good measure. Replaced Cech with Begovic and brought in a couple young prospects… finished 10 points ahead.

Don’t get me wrong I’m all for playing this high risk / high reward game with Benz that seems to be unfolding, think we all know there’s little backup plan. The ideal course would of been to add Pedro, whilst going hard for Benz / Reus or Lewa. Sell whomever makes the most sense, likely Welbeck at the end.

Of course because top 4 is the minimum with our financials.

It is the same for Liverpool and now even Spuds as can be seen by the huge pressures the respective teams managers face. Brendan’s job got salvaged after meeting with the owners.

Unlike us, Chelsea and City expect the title as the minimum. Pellegrini’s job was also on the line but rescued for one extra season as his replacement comes next year.

Joe: What does what happened in the last half of the season have to do with what will happen this season?

I guess the theory is that it’s the same players, the same manager, so unless something changes we should see something similar.

I’d say that the squad, the setup, the injury issues and tactics we finished last season with are much closer to what we’re going to start 2015/16 with, than what we started 2014/15

Of course, I wont be surprised when Wenger reports that Giroud ran into Ozil in training and then bounced in Coquelin, and all 3 are out till Xmas, while Koscielny laughed at it so much he gave himself a hernia

  98. Relieable sauce

Schneiderlin was an obvious straight forward signing that will cost us if we dont strengthen CM.

The argument against having too many players/genuine competition, is weak.
If Wenger rotates effectively its not a problem, 50-60 games, 4 “competitions”, the majority of the squad will play international games as well.

    Coq – Ramsey/JW/SC – Arteta/Chambers/Bielik/Hayden

Its neglect if he doesnt sign a DM. & not for the 1st time…or 2nd, or 3rd…

  99. Nasri's Mouth

    @Relieable Sauce

I’d be very surprised if Wenger was considering Hayden as part of his 1st team plans this season. He might get a carling cup game, but that’s about it. I’d guess on him going on loan or captaining U21s.

I doubt too that Bielik will get out of the U21s this season either.

  100. MidwestGun

    Xxx?

Why you blowing kisses bro? That’s weird.
Anyway you slice it we haven’t been good against the top sides, you can get pedantic about the exact points.
Hopefully by adding players from recent Title winning campaigns like
    Ozil – Rm and WC
    Sanchez – Barca
    Cech – Chelscum
we can get some winning mentality bleed over. And the Fa Cup back to back helps reinforce that. So that’s some reason for positivity, imo.

  101. wenker-wanger

“wenger is the most successful arsenal manager”……manager that had 7 barren years means that the trophy to season ratio isnt as good as grahams. Incidentally he inherited grahams arsenal and those players carried wenger through the first batch of his trophies.
Wenger is average at best….he got lucky and he found a club that had everything in place for him to manage easily. Motivation by adams and co, devastating match winning by the french guys that were easy to recruit ( HENRY AND PIRES)
It annoys me to think that there are many managers out there better than wenger, but they have to work damned hard with smaller resources and get nowhere the tributes this goon gets.
