Perfect preseason.

2 trophies and the season hasn’t even started!

I didn’t catch the whole of the Emirates Cup game. But the parts that I did catch made for impressive viewing.

We’ve beaten one of the best sides in Germany and we destroyed the second best team in France.

Sure preseason doesn’t account for much in the grand scheme of things, but this preseason gives us a full compliment of players to pick from heading into the Charity Shield. We’ll have some continuity of our approach that was so successful at the tail end of last summer. We’ll also have a monster truck load of confidence.

Makes me a bit nervous. It’s all going a little too well. Where’s that banana skin?

News buzzing around the airwaves is that Pep Guardiola is going to takeover at City next season. That makes me worry. He’ll get things ticking over there. So this feels like a very good season to make some heavy progress before things get really tasty. I wonder where Klopp will go?

There’s still no major news on the transfer front. Madrid haven’t done any major damage in the transfer market yet. United have chilled their beans and don’t seem to have managed a striker purchase. Chelsea haven’t done anything major for once.

Surely there’s more to come from this summer?

So will definitely have a good post for you tomorrow! Delayed because of match noise.

Tune in.

‘’Even my Spurs mate is drooling over our squad’’

    ———————————————————————————————

Just out of interest as you keep mentioning your mates, do you have any mates who don’t support either Liverpool, Spurs or Westham?

Lol…bet you refuse to talk about football to fans of other club’s like Chelsea or city so that you can continue to delude yourself and kid yourself on how well we’re doing.

Because what you said above should have no bearing on our expectations for the season. Do you get this ?

Maybe if you increased your friend circle, you might be able to appreciate the bigger picture…just a thought.

    Willow

No doubt its a problem if your star player gets injured, but its a trade off.

Aguero/Van Persie/Henry have been players that are good enough to single handedly win their teams the PL

You could have 10 Giorud level players, fit for the whole season, and still not win a thing.

Its the age old quality vs quantity argument.

  3. Nasri's Mouth

    @Dissenter

Could we do better than Welbeck ? Yes

Does this make him a terrible player? No, of course not.

Is it an absolute disgrace that we’ve got him, and is it a sackable defence?

Only if you live in your own private Lala Land.

  4. Relieable sauce

Welbeck doesnt have the technique, quick feet, 1st touch or instinct to be a top CF, isnt very good in the air either for a player who is 6ft+.
I’m no expert but I’d say he cannot be coached into a top CF as he lacks the necessary attributes at a basic level.

  5. Bamford10

    Willow

Gambon’s analysis annihilated yours. Only two of those players would be in the XI at any given time, their goal-scoring averages are far less impressive than they are in your hopes and dreams, and Wenger himself has acknowledged we need a quality goal-scorer.

What do you have besides faith? Not much.

As for what irritates the critics, it isn’t so much what has happened in preseason as what has NOT happened, namely quality signings beyond Cech.

And empty-headed, pollyanna cheerleaders like you are an irritant as well, obviously.

  6. Dissenter

Wenger doesn’t need to reply Mourhino.

The media will do the fact checking. He’s overplayed his hand. That criticism of Arsenal was puerile because everyone knows that Wenger was competing with both hands behind his back.

It doesn’t excuse Wenger for the spending phobia he’s developed since 2011-2012.

  7. Willow Wilson

I don’t disagree with the comment about a 30 goal striker but these are rare to find. I would bite off RM’s hand for Benzema.

RVP was 30 goal striker but how often did he deliver that return due to injury.

With the players I mentioned available, there are more goals in the team this season. Its something only time will tell.

  8. Nasri's Mouth

Bamford10: Only two of those players would be in the XI at any given time, their goal-scoring averages are far less impressive than they are in your hopes and dreams,

Their goal scoring averages are dependent on no. of games played though.

If we assume that one of Sanchez or Walcott will start every game, (which is pretty likely) then you’re going to get 20 goals to go along with your main striker. How many other sides will have that ?

yoiu are talking as if once you have a 30 goal a season cf, nobody else scores goals,

hazard will chip in with 10-15, costa will get 25, we will be outgunned.

why should we make do wiuth st mediocrity when rivals dont??

    Nasri’s mouth,
hahaha. My private lala land island is only reachable via you magic carpet 🙂

The sackable offence is not signing Welbeck per se.
It is the indecisiveness and thumb twiddling when other clubs are doing their business.
That’s what got us broke-back Kallstrom and also Welbeck. Wenger waits and waits because he likes to re-invent the wheel every time.

We ended up with Welbeck because Wenger believed that Giroud and Yaya Sanogo were good enough to start the season. He also erroneously assumed that Sanchez would be able to pay as a lone striker.
Welbeck was the only available option after Giroud’s injury threw a spanner in Wenger’s grandiose beliefs. United got the better of us.
You obviously disagree. Just tell me when your magic carpet is ready to transport me to that la-la land.

    Goals Scored
Last season we scored two goals less than Chelsea. This was despite Giroud missing a third of the season and Theo 90% of the season. We also lost Ozil for long periods and his assists. Despite this, we still fell just 2 short of Chelsea. We also had the highest number of different goalscorers. This suggests to me those 10 goals we may or may not need, are not going to be difficult to obtain.

Not quite sure why you don’t understand that.

Even if you disagree, wind that neck in of yours and do so nicely. You don’t have a very good record of getting things right, so you are in no position to abuse to other people.

  16. Jim Lahey

“What’s this about Benzema jetting to a location to sign? Past be past? Speak up man!! Is you or is you not coming to the Arsenal”

I’d say he is United bound, part of the De Gea deal maybe. The Ramos talk was probably a smokescreen and they have been talking to Madrid about Benzema instead.

Any United won’t cheap out and give Madrid what they want.

  17. Barking Arsene

We have players in the squad with the ability to contribute goals of course but that doesn’t mean we can afford to continue with just Giroud up front.

We need a 25 goal per season guy with the ability to win a game PLUS what we have already behind him.

No point telling ourselves any different. I like Giroud and appreciate that he brings others into the game with link up play etc but he will not win you a game on his own.

  18. Bamford10

Willow studiously leaves out any mention of 2011 and 2012, nor does he mention that in 2013, while Wenger spent money on Ozil (last minute, post-Villa-debacle) he pinched pennies otherwise, signing Flamini and Sanogo on frees.

He also fails to mention that he has only spent 11m this summer. Yes, there is still time, but signs suggest this may be all the activity he plans for the summer.

This with some 140m in cash in the bank — and a team that needs strengthening.

  19. Biggus

I don’t care what anyone says about Wenger. If you are able to convince a top club to take Sanogo; you’ve earned my respect in my book. Now if he gets a fee for Flamini? He’s a legend in my books and all past 70th minute subs and Almunia protection is forgiven.

Hell, I’ll even name my son Wenger and if I have another girl I’ll name her Wenga!!

  20. Emiratesstroller

    Gambon

First of all no striker scored 30 goals in EPL last season. The most scored were
Aguero 26, Kane 21 and Costa 20. Aguero and Kane also benefited from taking
    penalties.

When you compare Giroud you need to factor in that he missed 11 games through injury or suspension and was a substitute in another 6 games he played. Effectively he started only 21 games last season. So scoring 14 goals
is quite a respectable performance. In a full season I think that he might have
    scored 20.

Secondly you assume that only two of our goalscoring forwards will play in any game. Actually that might not be the case this season. Wenger might choose to play a 4-3-3 system. That is unlikely in games against strong
opposition, but possible against weaker sides.

My personal view is that both Sanchez and Giroud are good enough to score
20 goals in EPL and Walcott 15 goals. Also two or three of our Midfielders can
score 10 goals in a season if the team is playing well.

When you look at goalscoring stats last season only Manchester City outperformed us by a significant margin. The difference between Chelsea and ourselves was marginal and Man Utd scored something like 7 or 8 goals less than
    us.

  21. Nasri's Mouth

DUIFG: hazard will chip in with 10-15, costa will get 25, we will be outgunned

Costa scores more close to 10 more than Giroud, Sanchez/Walcott score close to 10 more than Hazard,

    It’s pretty close isn’t it ?

  22. Dissenter

Welbeck’s transfer has cost Arsenal a lot more than we realize.
It’s set an inflationary trend into the forward line’s salaries.
Players know the special players when they meet them in training. They understand that some players are way too good to earn average salaries. They get pissed off when they see players that are merely average earning same as or more than them.

I can imagine that Theo and Giroud instructed their agents to negotiate hard over the summer using Welbeck as a baseline.

  23. DUIFG

Can somebody tell me how many times a pl team has won the league with its top scoreer getting less than 20 goals, would be an interesting stat,

  24. Biggus

    Jim,

Hope that’s not true as per Benz going to ManU. That won’t be nice at all; I was secretly chucking at the idea of them only having Rooney and Chicharito as their main front men!! That changes everything.

Still feel we will finish ahead of Liverpool and to an extent I’m not fussed about Man City but Man U and Chelsea might be more tricky

  25. Bamford10

    Willow

Would you kindly take a closer look at how many goals we scored (and how many chances we created) against the top 4-6 teams? For this is what will make the difference going forward, not whether we beat up on the lowly and mediocre of the EPL.

What you will find is that we struggle against the better teams. This will not change with a healthy Giroud, who simply isn’t good enough, athletic enough or dangerous enough.

As things stand, I’m putting Walcott as my CF in my starting XI, because at least he is a constant source of danger for the opposition (despite his limitations).

Regardless, the analysis in question above is what you need to look at.

  26. Nasri's Mouth

DUIFG: Can somebody tell me how many times a pl team has won the league with its top scoreer getting less than 20 goals, would be an interesting stat,

  27. Dissenter

I must admit that I am displacing some of my Wenger anger on Welbeck.
He’s a nice lad who struck gold at Arsenal, good for him.

We needed a striker whose nadir was at least as good as Giroud to compete with him at the very least. That way, Giroud gets his rest and is fresher for games. Welbeck isn’t even good enough to really compete with Giroud.

I guess my anger should be directed at the manger who’s dithering created the perfect storm for the transfer to take place.

  28. Carts

    Emirates

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for one moment avoiding the fact of the Emirates cos what we have achieved with that Stadium is nothing more than impressive.

When you look at favours done for City and West Ham, it does smell like a piss take. Bayern, slightly different to my knowledge as the cost was split between 1860 and Bayern

“Rummenigge told the club magazine: “In 2005 we borrowed exactly 346 million euros in a 25-year plan, which was meant to last until 2030.

“Now we have paid the stadium off after only 9 1/2 years. I’m very proud of that.”

    http://www.espnfc.co.uk/bayern-munich/story/2154436/bayern-munich-pay-off-stadium-debt-almost-16-years-early

Hindsight is a funny cos one would argue that it’s only now that one is moaning about a lack of commercialism when in fact it was glaring back then.

Yes we were tied into Nike and Emirates deal, which at the time helped us acquired the money to build the Emirates, but for the most part offered very little money going forward; but we lacked serious innovations and foresight.

If not for the commercial constructions that we undertook, we would’ve posted a loss on a few occasions.

I think for the most part Arsenal simply lack commercial appeal. Which is sad, really. How we don’t even have a training ground jersey sponsor is madness – unless, of course, The Emirates already included that one in this time round.

Henry, Bergkamp and Viera were all world class players equivalent to those you have listed and none cost megabucks or huge wages. Ronaldo did not
cost exactly megabucks when he went to Manchester United.

    ————————————————————————————————

Bergkamp would not feature in the best of all time greats. He’s my personal favorite player of all time, but if I were being objective I’d say baggio definitely has the edge and so does arguably stoichkov.

Henry would not feature. Think brazillian Ronaldo, messi are on a different planet and he would come short.

Ronaldo (Portuguese) would not a get a starting birth up front and so could only feature on the right wing. As a right winger I’d take Figo.

Viera was good, but not mathieus level.

Beckham is not even worth mentioning. I don’t personally think scholes or giggs would feature either.

These are all very good players, but they do not reach the heights of the many players that have applied their trade elsewhere, namely Italy & Spain over the last 30 years. Henry knew this, which is why he had to try his hand at Spain.

Like I said the only Prem player that would feature in the all time Serie A side and La liga side of the past 30 years would be schmeical in my opinion.

We have difficulty in attracting the absolute best and have done so for a very long time. This makes being able to offer crazy money the best and only shot at trying to change this. Aguero, Hazard are only here for the money. If they we’re paid the same elsewhere (spain), i have no doubt that they’d move. Money is crucial, and even more so for the English teams.

  37. Klauspoppe

Everyone avoiding the Red’s legitimate question of why our record against top 8 is shit.

Only answer was cohesion will solve this as this only applies to us.

Our injured players are back and so will the opposition’s.

We all know as even Cech mentions we lost those games to due the minor details (coaching error). We can all stack up with great players and still have a nagging skepticism when Wenger is managing the team.

Best record in 2013 calendar year in Europe but then Wenger gets all arrogant and plays a highline to get demolished 5-1 ,6-0.

Wenger’s idealism is costing Arsenal dearly.
Yes, he’s done lots of good things, especially keeping us competitive when we had no business hanging around the top.
However, his idealism is limiting the club as well.
How he could have persisted for so long with clowns like Sczezny. I really do not know. Now, it’s clear that the so-called “loan” is really a prelude to a 5 million pound transfer next summer.
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/arsenal-goalkeeper-wojciech-szczesny-complete-6148399
I bet he wont even do enough to earn the full transfer because of his lack of professionalism. He will be back to us like Bendner, bouncing back and forth in lack-luster loans until his contract runs out.

There were jokers here arguing with me that Sczezny would fetch at least 20 million pounds in transfer.

Utd were obviously going hard for Ramos & if rumours are to be believed, tried to temt BM into selling Muller with a massive bid (enquired/bid for Lewa as well??).

I’d push the boat out to sign them as well & Benz would be 3rd/4th choice.

Shit comparison anyway. Matthaus is closer to Modric.

They only know what’s good for them when they are told what’s good for them. Bet their wives have a field day with them. They have been told by the club that Welbeck is an excellent prospect and so there is no point in arguing with them.

  52. Leedsgunner

“Between Giroud, Welbeck, Sanchez and Theo there are plenty of goals”

It’s not just about the number it’s also about who you score against.

Let’s say in three league games you had the following results:

    Aston Villa 0-6 Arsenal
    Chelsea 0-1 Arsenal
    Man United 0-1 Arsenal

    6 goals – 3 points

    Arsenal 1- 0 Chelsea
    Arsenal 1-0 Man United
    Arsenal 1-0 Aston Villa

    3 goals 9 points

Call me crazy but I would take the lower scoring team any day. Are Welbeck Walcott Giroud and Sanchez capable of giving us the results that we need against Chelsea and Man United?

I personally think if we have all our best players fit and in good form we might, especially with Cech in goal… although that’s a lot of ifs. Hopefully Wenger will manage his squad so that his best players are available for the crunch games rather than playing the same players in games our squad players should be able to get results in. Keeping our players fit and rotating them will be as important as new signings.

People need to stop this shite right here. Since when does one of the best strikers and players in world football agree to be part of a swap deal? It almost never happens. Besides he’s more expensive than DeGea. Anyway you’ve gotta think we’d have a chance of signing him even the most hardened miserablist on here must admit it

  64. naijagunner

What muppet makes a video for fans, while driving?
Wenger promoted him too soon and fueled his narcissism.

I always felt there was something off about him attitude wise. Good riddance i say.

  65. Wallace

Rijkaard was closer to Vieira than Gullit, but he didn’t have Vieira’s ability on the ball. the closest i can think of to Vieira in the last 20yrs is Gerrard. Keane was great, but like Rijkaard, a lot less dynamic going forward.

  66. Nasri's Mouth

Alfie: Player A because he scored more goals – what if player B bottles it every time from the penalty spot?

Player B doesn’t bottle it, he’s not the penalty taker.

The team is still scoring the penalties, it’s purely that someone else is taking them.

Hence player B is the better player.

Lacazette is a great example of this. People cite him as having a great record last season because he scored 27, but 9 of those were from the penalty spot, only 18 from open play. Are you saying it doesn’t matter, that it doesn’t change your opinion of how good a goal scorer he is ?

The top top players score about 1 in 4 of their chances. What percentage of penalties are scored ? higher than 3 in 4 I’d guess, of course it skews the detail.

Lets look at it another way,Giroud scored only scored 14 last season, but didn’t score any penalties, because Cazorla took them. He scored 6. Had Giroud scored those 6 and scored 20 goals and someone like Willow praised him for being a 20 goal a season striker, are you telling me no-one would start bringing up penalties ?

relieable sauce: If RM are looking to get De Gea this season surely MU will demand Benzema as part of the deal.

Possibly, though they tried that with Ramos, so now he’s said no, would that make Benzema sloppy seconds, wonder how he’d feel about that?

In theory, ManU could always blow us out of the water if they wanted to with Benzema, but maybe Benzema prefers the Wenger French connection, maybe we’re further down the line with him, given that contact has already been made, and LvG has been pretty definite about Rooney being his man up front.

Still pretty unlikely he’ll come to us though, despite his separate plane, his weird comments, and following some Instagram acc. called Wengerland 😀

Did Robben join chelsea after 2005? definately WC.

    No Gerrard either??

Agree with you that the best foreign players tend to ply their trade in Italy or Spain.

I hope to see an inter-continental league competition before I die.
Serie A/Spanish lg allstars vs EPL/Bundesligue allstars playing in KO games in Asia/UAE/America/Oz. Whats not to like?

Logistical nightmare probably & would need major co-operation between clubs and FAs, so maybe too much to expect.

    Stop trying to score points.

Henry and Viera were both World Cup Winners. Henry is rated by many as
the finest player who graced the EPL and Viera was chased throughout his
career by the top teams in Italy and Spain.

Bergkamp may not have achieved as much, but I think that he was considered
in his prime to be the most gifted Dutch Footballer after Johann Cruyff.

I made it absolutely clear also that whilst the British Players I listed were not
world beaters they were nevertheless very gifted and would have walked into
    any leading Continental Team.

  73. Klauspoppe

Rijkaard played CB as well so pretty much a Gilberto type DM. Keane is like Gilberto.

Lampard is more like Vieira. Gerrard played pretty close to the striker frequently.

Vieira is a special player. Decent ball skills, not lethal and great physical attributes one can dream of. Though, he has his flaws doubt many people would list him in their greatest 11.

And fucking typo again…Not Davids but Matthaus. Lol shit day

  74. Wallace

would be pretty cool if Wenger’s instagram account was called ‘Wengerland’…and that Benzema had just started following it.

  75. Dissenter

I have just been informed by a friend who’s paparazzi that Benzema was photographed while emerging from the toilets at London city airport.
    More to follow.

  76. Marko

Also I think if he did go Madrid wouldn’t miss him too bad. Yesterday they looked good granted it was preseason. And with Isco, James, Bale and Jese, Chyresev and Vasquez as attacking options feeding Ronaldo they look in good shape going forward. They’ll still likely try bring someone in maybe attempt Aguero or someone smaller to play second fiddle to Ronaldo. Worst case scenario they trigger the clause in Morata’s contract and bring him back

  77. Jim Lahey

@Dissenter – “I have just been informed by a friend who’s paparazzi that Benzema was photographed while emerging from the toilets at London city airport.”

    Alfie

Henry didn’t have a fantastic penalty record and had Lauren and pires in front of him as our penalty taker yet was prolific.
The point I’m trying to make is a striker can still be invaluable to the team without being penalty taker.
In fact a striker can still be invaluable to the team without being prolific.
    Look at drogba
    Look at solskjaer
    Look at gudjohnson
    Mijatovic at Real Madrid

Giroud 1. Needs to be fresh.
His form tails off once he tires.
He doesn’t have stamina to play more than 6-8 games in a row and be effective.
    2. He is not in the team to be our aguero. He is in the team to contribute goals but more importantly act as a foil for our more lethal attackers.

Benzema, cavani or lacazette are not better olayers and even if they were (which they aren’t)then they are not going to walk straight in and win arsenal the league.

Personally I see giroud, walcott, chambo taking the big step up this year hopefully along with welbeck, although I expect him to take another season or two (like RvP) to really find his scoring boots on a regular basis.
Scoring goals is the hardest thing in football to do. It takes time for that confidence in front of goal to manifest.
    Walcott is a prefect example

  79. Rocky Pires

Benzema may wel have being talking of his past injury record and his dodgey knee ligaments.
I suppose tapping Rhianna wouldnt help with his knee ligaments either .

  81. qna

Did you guys here the rumour that Benzema has signed for us on a 3 year deal worth 21.5m in total. Why would he only sign a 3 year deal? That sounds more like Giroud’s wages. Dont think Benzema will be on the same wages as Giroud (140k/week).

Hopefully this thing gets resolved and we can roll out the Benz in our season opener. Will be gutted if he signs for United or City.

I think 6 Million is decent for Chesney if he does go . The lads attitude is shit. Shame as he is talented but an absolute cock.

Credit to Wenger for moving on the Podolskis and the Chesneys who were lazy and setting bad example.
Little Jack would also want to keep his nose dry or else he will suffer the same faith .

Regardless if Ches does well it could open up a bidding war just like with Alderweilde at Spurs/S’hampton .

I still would have liked to make Ches see the real world and have sent him on loan to Everton or Villa but however we will see how it pans out .

    ”Stop trying to score points”

    ——————————————————————————————————

Its still the same discussion. Like i said None of the players that have played in the Prem over the last thirty years would feature in any of the all time ‘serie A and la liga’ dream teams.

The phenomenons do not come to the Prem and that’s my point. Spain/Italy have language, weather and other cultural advantages going for them. The only way for us to compete is to bring out the good old sterling. ….. and so you can not say that money is not important. Its everything and the only attraction to most of the world’s best players if we are being honest.

If you want to turn yourself into a true future legend then you have to go to Spain and prove it, and back in the day it was Italy. Only people in the UK would argue otherwise.

I don’t make the rules ….that’s just the way it is.

Benzema is in talks with Chelsea
I have a friend who works as a porter at Chelsea harbour and he he is looking at apartments there tomorrow.
Aparently Jose is keen to re unite with him and is unsure if coast can overcome his injuries.
How do I know this? Jose has an apartment there too and it’s where Chelsea stay before every home game.
Not his apartment, the hotel but he is still friendly with the porters

I’d say we have a decent chance of signing Benzema IF RM were to sell him.

He would give us a better chance of winning the league than he would MU imo, especially if they lose De Gea.

Imagine we sign him though & Coq suffers a long term injury. Our dominance in MF is lessened as well as the ability of our CMs/AMCs in creating & scoring, not to mention severely weakened defensively as a team.

Seems an unnecessary & unrealistic risk not to add a DM considering how close we are to competing. Add a WC CF & its even a more puzzling decision, as good CDMs are more common & we dont actually need a WC one.

Mourhino can’t intervene because he’s already signed Falcao but no way Van Gaal will stay quiet and not start a bidding war.

Mikel Obi would not have lasted 10 seasons at Chelsea if he weren’t good enough. Chelsea have a reputation for tossing players out too quickly. They even kept him after the embarrassment of falsely accusing a referee with racism. He’s played under Ancelotti, Mourhino [twice] and Gus Hiddink who are all undoubtedly world-class managers. They all kept playing him.

He was a big part of their CL winning season. He didn’t put a foot wrong in the semifinals and finals.
