Shaping up powerfully

by .

Super quick one from me today because I have a beast of a day on fixing things!

Right, the game against Lyon.

Bloody amazing stuff.

Very difficult to put too much on it. Remember, this was a competition that had certain people praising Arsene Wenger for unearthing 4 goal Sanogo this time last year.

What I loved about the game was the abundance of power and pace we have in the side.

Chamberlain looks ready to step up. In fact, the whole team looks ready. These guys all know each other, they have a vision and a style. They have a game plan.

I really do think we can make a title challenge this year.

Do we need a sprinkle of something exceptional? I think so. I really think we need to bring in a world class forward. Will we do that? I have no idea. But we have the cash to blow £60m on a striker. That cash in the bank is pointless. Buy in someone incredible and make some stories for the club.

Today sees the return of the legend that is Nik B. Should be a fun game.

Catch you tomorrow with a mini exclusive.

Apparently Munich would sell, it has been over all the German newspapers but it could all be german tabloid bollocks , we are so strong financially that we could test their resolve in a serious way.I would cream my pants if we signed him.

Just got in my door in Bristol. Knackered & skint but a great weekend.

Thanks Pedro for helping me to get tickets.

“We signed Walcott 10 years. lol lol”

Isn’t that a good reason to consider him ahead of so called world class strikers who might struggle to settle in first season n spoil our tittle challenge?
Walcott doesn’t need to learn new language, his wife not homesick surely n he trains with our top class midfielders everyday.
Now If you pay 50millions for a player you have to start him, by the time you discover he flopped n decided to drop him you already lost points.
Best to hang on to Walcott for now

Mourinho ” clubs are trying to buy the title “.

Is anyone on the tv, radio and written press going to call him out on it ? Laughable. I hope he’s pissed of with his owner. See what he can do with his exceptionally talented youth players

    Matic £25 million
    Cesc £30 million
    Ramirez £18 million
    Hazard £30 million
    Oscar £20 million
    Willian £30 millon
    Costa £30 million
    Cuadrado £30 million

If Pep has signed for City next season , where does it leave Pelligrini ? Lame duck ? That city squad will need big overhaul, they not getting younger and will have to play a high intensity pressing game.

  5. tunnygriffboy

Now Lou7s Van Gaalbladder is at it. Says it’s still not his man u side as it lacks creativity. F.cking unbelievable. He’s spent £230 million and not enough creativity. Not forgetting Moyes spent £60+ million on Mata and Fellaini. £ 300 million in two and a bit years and he’s moaning. Di Maria off and I hope Degea b.ggers off to Madrid as well.

We have played 4 pre-season matches and by now we should begin to see who are the players likely to be picked for our starting line-up at the beginning of next season. This presupposes that we do not bring any new players in
    the foreseeable future.

    My view is as follows:

    GK Cech
    RB Debuchy/Bellerin Rotate
    CB Mertesacker
    CB Koscielny
    LB Monreal/Gibbs Rotate
    DMF Coquelin
    CMF Ramsey
    RW Oxlade-Chamberlain
    AMF Ozil
    LW Sanchez
    ST Giroud/Walcott Rotate

    GK Ospina
    FB Gibbs/Monreal Rotate
    CB Gabriel
    CMF Cazorla
    AMF Wilshire
    W Walcott/Welbeck Rotate
    ST Giroud/Walcott Rotate

    Injury Replacements
    GK Martinez
    FB/CB Chambers
    MF Arteta
    MF Rosicky
    W/ST Iwobi

The one major hole in squad at moment is substitute DMF should Coquelin
get injured or need a rest. The team looked “fragile” defensively in first half
yesterday. That was a combination of a weakened defence and a midfield
combination of Arteta and Cazorla who were fairly ineffective.

The other position in team where I do feel that we could look perhaps for an
upgrade is left back. Monreal and Gibbs are adequate rather than brilliant.

The team will have plenty of goalscoring potential even without a world class
striker particularly when you factor in that Sanchez who was our top scorer
last season has not played. Obviously bringing in a more clinical and mobile
    striker would enhance our opportunities.

    Reine-Adelaide highlights –

the kid’s a bit special. great build, great awareness, lovely balance…on the ball definitely something of Diaby about him…at 17 he’s looking as good as Cesc & Jack did at that age. with his versatility will probably play across the midfield while he develops but his career will be as a central midfielder, no doubt.

  8. tunnygriffboy

    Team for Community Shield

    Debuchy Per Kos Monreal

    Coquelin Santi

    Ox/Ramsey Ozil Ox/Wilshere

Thing he will balance Ox pace with industry of Ramsey or Wilshire wide until Alexis or Webeck back.

  9. kingHenry

number one problem with that lineup is the midfielder being played out wide. During this preseason, we have played better when we’ve had two real wingers playing, rather than Ramsey or Wilshere playing there.

Do we need a new winger? maybe not. We have Alexis, Theo, Ox, Welbeck?(SMH) and some very promising young players. Wenger needs to stop putting square pegs in round holes.

“the kid’s a bit special. great build, great awareness, lovely balance…on the ball definitely something of Diaby about him…at 17 he’s looking as good as Cesc & Jack did at that age. ”

    He does look great!

Hopefully we don’t make the mistake we did with Jack at that stage and play him to the ground in delusion that we are “developing him.” He should play a secondary role to the main squad and learn from the older pros in the squad.

  11. Leedsgunner

Gently gently and gradually gradually has to be name of the game. We don’t want another broken player before he’s 20!

  12. Dream10

    Bellerin Mertesacker Koscielny Monreal
    Coquelin Cazorla
    Ramsey Ozil TheOx

Alexis will not play in the first match. If we can win comfortably, there will be less pressure for AW throw him in. Another comfortable start in the second match and he can come off the bench and play 20-30 minutes.

Hope we sign Reus. Quick off the ball, comfortable on it and a great decision maker in the final third. Ozil and Ramsey will have fine seasons with a player like Marco in the XI. Should he join, then Alexis will move to the right, as the German is the superior footballer

  13. vicky

PL predictions (things could change depending on who clubs sign in future)

    1. Chelsea
    2. Arsenal
    3. United
    4. City
    5. Spurs
    6. Liverpool

  14. Wallace

Wenger’s talking about U21s this season, but if he continues to develop I’m sure we’ll see him in and around the first team. already seems to have moved ahead of Zelalem and Crowley in the queue.

  15. Emiratesstroller

Cazorla is a fantastic player, but I think that he will come under pressure this
    season from Ramsey.

He did not have a great game yesterday in part due to playing alongside Arteta. It highlighted the frailties of this combination.

Obviously Wenger will be under a lot of pressure in his selection with such a
large squad. I think that only Ozil and Sanchez are guaranteed a place in starting lineup in midfield and forwards if everyone is fit and on form.

  16. Jim Lahey

Pretty disappointed if the Pep Guardiola to City rumours are true. Not just the fact that I would love him to be the next manager of Arsenal. Buts its not a particularly brave move is it? Going to a side were he can buy an entire new team, no need for putting any work in.

Wasn’t impressed with him going to Bayern either. But I guess an easy job is an easy job!

  17. Al

The thing is anyone playing alongside Arteta will struggle. He simply does not have the legs anymore.

Just shows the importance of coquelin. Really need that back up option to him because our season in terms of seriously challenging largely depends on his fitness

  18. blsany

    DFB-Pokal: 2008–09
    La Liga: 2011–12
    Copa del Rey: 2010–11
    Supercopa de España: 2012
    FA Cup: 2013–14, 2014–15
    UEFA European Under-21 Championship: 2009
FIFA World Cup: 2014,Emirates cup 2015

  19. Jim Lahey

“The thing is anyone playing alongside Arteta will struggle.”

Could see that clearly yesterday, Santi was burdened with Arteta playing beside him.

  20. vicky

Well, the obvious solution is not to play Arteta then, not get shot of Cazorla. Why would he e made liable for someone else’ mistakes/deficiencies ?

  21. Emiratesstroller

The player whom I would like to see Arsenal recruiting as an option for Coquelin is Carvalho. He is defensively solid and can play also CB.

The fact that he has currently a stress fracture should not deter Arsenal taking a long term view and buying him. It should be a lot easier to recruit him
from Sporting Lisbon than many of the other options.

  22. bennydevito

Agreed about Guardiola. Seems to be another cheque book manager like Mourinho if it’s true. Really disappointing, I was convinced he’d take over Wenger next season. If he has agreed City it can only mean he’s got inside knowledge in Wenger’s plans to retire or not.

    Looks like not.

  23. blsany

Seriously awesome weekend of football.Boys are really on it but I just think we are missing a good chance at seeing what a Gabriel/Kos pairing would look like … Two quick, aggressive tacklers anchoring the defense could be just what we need to nullify some of the better attacks in the PL ..

  24. Emiratesstroller

Noone is suggesting getting rid of Cazorla least of all me, but I do think that he
will be under severe pressure from Ramsey next season if the younger player
is playing well and injury free.

Cazorla is now over 30 and in his final year of contract.

The problem at the moment is that Wenger is holding onto too many players
who are age 30+. He should have offloaded Arteta,Flamini and Rosicky all of
    whom are past their best.

  25. Jim Lahey

@blsany – Got to watch him live over the last two days, everything he does is so nonchalant but it always has purpose, you can see his is a step ahead of everyone on the pitch, a joy to watch!

  26. Nasri's Mouth

I think we’ll see an awful lot of Cazorla this season. Wenger will want to play him for his control and Ramsey for his energy and movement.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if he played around with the pair of them in the middle without Coq for some games.

  27. SRG#FreeN5

@Jim Guardiola chose “that Bayern” , I dont think he is brave. But IMO he will struggle at City.
More competition in the league , he fell short at CL in the last 2 seasons dont think he can get a better team than Bayern at City.

  28. Emiratesstroller

Wenger does need to upgrade both our U21 and U18 squads. They were exceedingly disappointing last season as Jorge Bird who writes frequently on these matters more or less confirmed. We are in second division of U21s and finished bottom in U18s.

Part of the problem with youth players recruited in past has been that the club
focussed too much on technical ability and not enough on physical strength.

Zelalem is a classic case of the problem. He is technically gifted with good vision, but he lacks the physicality of what is required in EPL. I don’t see him making grade.

Adelaide is a good physical specimen who will cope in EPL as will both Iwobi
and Akpom. Of the three players I thought that Iwobi was the most likely if
any to make first team this season.

  29. SRG#FreeN5

@NM I also think that Cazorla will drop back into Arteta’s role and Ramsey Ozil playing together.

Ramsey — Ozil pairing is much better than Cazorla — Ozil , atleast in attacking .
Cazorla is going to be an interesting problem this year.

  30. Nasri's Mouth

Cazorla plays from deeper than Ozil though so that’s no surprise.

    What I’m talking about is:

    Cazorla Ramsey

With the wide men swopping between Wilshere, Welbeck, Sanchez and Walcott

  31. Nasri's Mouth

ES: Wenger does need to upgrade both our U21 and U18 squads.

We’ve signed quite a few players this summer to fill their ranks, with more to come.

  32. Emiratesstroller

I think that Wenger will need to rotate more than in previous years if only to
keep everyone satisfied, but the two players who I think are “guaranteed” a
starting place in games that matter will be Ozil and Sanchez.

The other players will be selected on form and the type of opposition we are
playing. At least I hope that is the policy.

  33. bennydevito

He did his coaching badges at Arsenal, stayed as Wenger’s guest and studied hours of video analysis and developed his tactics from Wenger and was quoted as saying he wouldn’t manage City and would like to manage Arsenal, which is why he rejected old toilet and chavski.
