How long would you keep Wenger on for?

Screen Shot 2014-10-21 at 09.52.01

So I’ve woken up to chat from Wenger that he’s panicked about retirement. He has 2 seasons left and he’s still talking about his lack of hobbies.

“Retirement? Yes, it crosses my mind but for not longer than five seconds because I panic a bit.

“When we played at United, Ferguson met me. I said: ‘Come on, you don’t miss it?’

‘No.’ He had enough.”

Really, he should find some damn hobbies. I mean, my latest one is getting drunk and communicating on Whatsapp solely with pictures. It’s not cool, but real life emoji (means ‘picture letter’ in Japanese) is so hot right now.

Look, I’m not going to go too deep into this today, because Wenger is doing most things the right way, which is progress… but the journey has to end at some point. If he’s doing a good job, fine, I just worry he has no stop button and we’ll be wheeling him out when he’s 75.

It’s great that he loves his job. It’s brilliant that he’s committed. I just wonder when the point arrives that you say, ‘enough is enough’. I think it’s unhealthy to stay in one place for too long and I think there is definitely merit in tapping out at the top, versus being dragged out the stadium when you’ve just signed Sanogo up to a 52 year deal.

If Wenger leaves, it’d be great if it were dignified.

I have a horrible feeling it won’t be… unless Ivan makes a Bayern like decision and makes a move to bring in new blood. It’d be bold, but sometimes you have to be bold for the good of the club. It can’t always be about what Arsene wants. I think Steve Jobs nailed it when he said death was life’s greatest invention because it allowed for regeneration. I’m talking metaphorically here.

Same principles for retiring.

The Guardian are reporting that Chezzer is a done deal to Roma. My calls earlier on in the summer that he’d go, met with incredulity, have been confirmed. We won’t see him back. Hopefully he does well. I’d imagine he hasn’t been sold because his wages are so damn mega.

Anyway, good to move him on. Good for the camp and team spirit.

I tell you what, you have to hand it to Ivan. He’s had a blinder this summer. He’s shifted all the deadwood and he even managed to get a fee for Flamini! A pretty good one! Incredible commercial tekkers.

Right, post has to be short today, I’m putting out fires like the London Fire Brigade, yah get me?

In an ideal world I would have lewandiwski as well, because as you stated he is younger, but also because he is a target man, good in the air and great with his back to the goal and I think he would hit the ground running as he would be able to play the Giroud role to a much improved standard.

  2. Relieable sauce

Does anyone actually think the £3m consultancy fee paid to Stans company might have been for a independant-ish review of the running of the club?

The sceptic in me says very unlikely but £3m is small change for Stan & isn’t it essentially his money anyway?
Might have been the best way to convince Wenger that a change of approach was needed.

  3. nasri's mouth

If you total our transfer and wage spend, over the last ten years, (approximately) we’ve been the 4th/5th biggest spenders in the league and we’ve finished 4th or 3rd so we’ve overachieved… A bit

  4. salparadisenyc

    Good question Dissenter, no idea.
Wanted to catch the Lyon match, they have some great young players.

  5. Wallace

“While we’re on money, maybe you can explain how our wage bill was always near the top of the heap but we apparently couldn’t compete on wages.”

near the top, but still only about two thirds of what the Manc sides are paying out, and 25m or so a year behind Chavski. which probably equates to about 3 top quality players.

  6. tunnygriffboy

Be two interesting games. Both clubs we play in CL. Lyon a young vibrant attacking side, Wolfsburg the big hitters supposedly the side most likely to push Bayern next season. Interesting to see what combinations/system Wenger will use. Will he play without a designated DM like Everton in Singapore?

  7. Emiratesstroller

    Midwest Gun and Tunnygriffboy

As Midwest may recall, because I gave him some personal advice some months
ago I broke my own rule and reacted to the bait of someone who behaves more
often than not like a “football hooligan”. I should have not reacted.

For the time being I will continue to post and see what happens.

I would make the following points on two topics discussed today:

    1. I watched Sampa play for Barcelona v LA on Sky last night and he had actually a very good game in a team comprising of both first and B team players. It
was a mature performance and he has both good discipline and distribution of
the ball. Maybe he is the type of player who can be promoted to a first team squad and be a good understudy for Coquelin if and when required.

    2. I read the full statement of Wenger and not the abbreviated and misrepresented versions which have been published by some of the less reliable press.
Wenger was discussing his personal philosophy and what he said was in no
way a criticism of LVG or Man Utd. For the record he discussed other clubs as
well and in particular how Barcelona develop players. He preferred to work
in similar fashion. He went on to say that was how Man Utd used to operate,
but clearly unlike the era of Giggs,Scholes, Beckham and Neville brothers they were not producing players of the same calibre and that was why Man
Utd were now spending a lot of money in transfer market. Obviously if the
club does not produce young players then you need to go out on market and

    3. However, you need also read today what Commolli said. Commolli used
to work at Arsenal and then was Football Director at Liverpool. He was critical
of recent transfer policy at Liverpool criticising them for bringing in too many
new players in a single transfer window. Last year it was nine and now it is six.
He did not feel that you can build a successful team in this fashion.

  8. GoonerDave

    nasris mouth –
Has someone done those figures? Its a fair point, but does raise the question – if 4th spend + 4th highest wage bill = 4th place finish, yet no spend + 4th highest wage bill equates to the same or one place below, is it a very accurate way of measuring?

  9. Relieable sauce

    Doomers! 😉
Your probably right though, especially as they could have got the definitive review from Le Grove free of charge.

  10. tunnygriffboy

So glad you’re cotinuing to post. It can be a madhouse on here. You are often the voice of reason on here and always fair and objective. I enjoy your posts

I’ve been banging on about that interview Wenger did today. In no way was he criticising man u. However bastardised versions of it sprung up everywhere and unsurprisingly a few on here were happy to take Wenger to task over it. Durham devoted the first hour of his show to it on the radio today.

Liverpool will be interesting this season. Firmino in for Sterling, Benteke will be interesting, Milner for Gerard and Clyne for Johnson. They currently have 7 strikers on their books though that is likely to change. Be interesting to see whatstyle he plays next season though it may take time for it to gel. They have Europa as well. Last chance saloon for Rodgers.

Samper would be a good signing. He’s very highly rated but I would imagine firstteam oopportunities would be limited. Also someone posted earlier that Barca B have been relegated ?

  11. tunnygriffboy

Should be good games. Be interesting what formation Wenger goes with. Will he experiment with Santi playing deep with Wilshere and Ramsey playing ahead of him like he did in Singapore or will the zimmer man get a trundle out.

Is Welbeck fit yet ? Or is he off to Besiktas ? Lol

  12. nasri's mouth

    From 2000-2012

Combined net transfer and salary spend

    Chelsea £2078m

    ManU £1427m

    ManC £1368m

    Liverpool £1275m

    Arsenal £1112m

    Spurs £776m

  13. tunnygriffboy

Just to cheer you all up. Benzema’s agent has just come out and said Benzema is happy in Madrid and is 1000% staying. Sheeeeeet ! Where to now guys ? Reus ? Draxler ? Pedro ?Charlie f.cking Austin ? Now I am in the slough of despond boooooooooo !

  14. MidwestGun

    Diss –
Sorry, I was getting my outdoors time in today. I think Espn is rebroadcasting the Emirates Cup games later that night on tv. Live I think is only on-line.
So I might have to avoid getting any news that day.

I for one am glad to see you here. I don’t know much about Samper but would welcome a backup to Coq that isn’t Arteta.

  15. MadeToLoveMagic

missed your reply earlier about Samper..

I agree his age isn’t ideal. I just think it’s highly unlikely Wenger will sign a player who instantly displaces Coq in the team, but a younger player maybe. Someone he can develop.

I haven’t seen hardly anything of Samper myself so I’ll take your word that he lacks power and running, but if even half of what i’ve read about him is true then he could be a huge star… And the right time to tempt him away from Barca is probably now.

Although it would be better to have a more experienced DM of around 26 or 27 come in to replace Diaby and Flamini wenger won’t do it , especially as he sees Jack as a solution to that position.

Samper seems like the sort of opportunistic Barca poaching style transfer that Wenger would be all over. I reckon it would be an pretty damn good signing. As long as we get that striker!

  16. Hunter

We all need to stop all this nonsense regarding Benzema,Lewadanski or any other bloody forward,it’s NOT going to happen nor is a DM either.Wengers one and only signing will be Cech!He genuinely feels he has enough in the squad to finish 4th.No-one will convince him any differently,he thinks he is being super clever and that we know nothing. He will put his trust in the current squad only for them to fail just like the previous 8 years in the league. We know we should strengthen in attack and midfield and only time will tell.Come Xmas we will be there or there about probably 4/5th with the same old teams above us,Chelsea,City and Utd!We will be battling with Pool for 4th.God knows what our sponsors think, surely making the necessary signings is good publicity for them too?Wenger thinks he’s being clever………he isn’t and the worst news is that Gazidis thinks WENGER should go on and on and on…etc, etc, etcAs Fraser from Dads Army always said ‘We are DOOMED,Doomed’WENGER OUT!!!!

  17. Arsene's Nurse

There is nothing virtuous in having a reduced net spend when significant transfer money was available whilst deadwood were kept on inflated socialist wages.

  18. Samesong

Money was tight when we moved to the Emirates but it’s a lot freer now,’ said the 72-year-old. ‘We could go into the market and probably buy any player in the world, apart from half a dozen who are un-buyable. In the accounts, there’s over £200million in the bank. You could say to Arsene we’ve got no money and he wouldn’t worry, or you could give him £100m and he might not spend it.
‘At the moment there are no plans to sign anyone, unless he finds a real superstar like Mesut Ozil or Alexis Sanchez. He’s looking for one of those but there aren’t many available. We would back him to break the club’s transfer record. If he wanted the man, he could have him. Apart from Messi and Ronaldo, he could have any player. We will probably have to break the club record to get the man he wants.’

  19. gambon

Well can we stop with the “we cant compete with UTD, City, Chelsea” bollocks.

Interesting that we have spoken with a striker,, who could that be?

Also interesting that the chairman is on my wavelength (ie – we need to break our record and spend big)

  20. gambon

Actually Lord Harris is talking bollocks himself.

First he says we arent looking to sign anyone, then suddenly theres a CF “who wants to come”

  21. Dan Ahern

Hah, truth be told it sounds like a bit of empty boasting from Lord Harris.

Still, interesting that he apparently has a transfer list with an implied superstar CF on it.

  22. carts

“Tuttosport is reporting we’re close to signing Llorente”

A slightly better version to Giroud…really though

  23. Dream10

mistake on my part. They’re saying we’re now in pole position. An alternative to Giroud. Not top tier

  24. Paulinho

“You [the media] created that, I don’t believe in that at all. When you have a good enough team you beat them.

“Our heaviest defeat last season was 2-0. It was against Chelsea. We have reduced the gap and I believe we are ready to go further.

“Chelsea have lost against weaker opponents than us as well.”

Wenger embarrassing and contradicting himself again.

If Chelsea have lost to weaker opponents, it can’t be down to just quality can it?

  25. carts

    Lol @ Ahern

Somewhat of an alternative – just better in the air and probably has a better first touch.

  26. Sam

    Tunnygrifboy said:

“Just to cheer you all up. Benzema’s agent has just come out and said Benzema is happy in Madrid and is 1000% staying. Sheeeeeet ! Where to now guys ? Reus ? Draxler ? Pedro ?Charlie f.cking Austin ? ”

Try Wellington Silva, maybe that’s Wenger secret striker. He just signed a new contract

  27. Sam

    Just saying!

Sanchez-Pato- Walcott upfront could be mouthwatering

Giroud n Welbeck on the bench farting on each other

  28. salparadisenyc

    Chirst man

Let the Benzema shit breath a bit, if the carpet magnet says King Benz wants a bit of Blighty refinement in his repertoire then obviously hes ours.

Just a matter of Rafa coming to terms with that. Reus is going to make a pile of money in Madrid.

  29. salparadisenyc

Brace yourselves boys King Benz is coming.

Frenchman to Frenchman, consider those 10 years in between a giant void or blind spot. Similar to a sultry summer extended week on the lash forgotten in its dizzying imperfection, yet always present and available if one really needs to recall it and feel the pain. The names aren’t pretty.

You’re bad men every last one of you.

  30. tunnygriffboy

Back to Le grove . Been out the garden for a bit of a sabbatical. I’ve got no teeth and my gums are bleeding. I’ve been chewing nails because this king Benz business is distressing me !

  31. tunnygriffboy

Why doesn’t that old fossil Lord Harris just shut his fat face instead of telling everyone that we’ve got loads of money to spend. What an absolute buffoon.

  32. Sam

    Salparadisenyc said:

“We’ve got Sir Carpet King saying there’s £200m in the bank for a worldie and you’re offering up Llorente and Pato? Nah I’m out.”

Wenger always look for cheap options, If Benzema talks are true then the deal will happen at the last minute after all the cheap deals fail to materialise.
Benzema: 40millions, Pato: 15millions. No need to guess

  33. Sam

Wow! 200millions can buy us Benzema n Pogba still some money left
maybe add Faouzi Ghoulam still have some spare change

  34. salparadisenyc

Sam you’ve been dulled by the men in charge. Stand up and be heard.

King fucking Benz is coming ….. Or not but you mention Pato again I’m putting Ahern on you. That’s no dreamy night.

  35. BacaryisGone

This Lord Harris could be a goldmine of comedy. I can see Ivan racing to get some duct tape right now.

Our season will hinge on the three young Englishmen. If Walcott, Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain can step up in a truly significant way, we win the title. Otherwise, it’s another 3rd/4th finish.

  36. salparadisenyc

The carpetbaggers not doing anyone favors at this stage. I’d like to think we’re crafty and that was planted purposefully, but think we all know better.

  37. Relieable sauce

Muscle in on the chavs with a bid for Stones as well. If we cant have him make the fuckers pay full whack.

  38. Dark Hei

“This Lord Harris could be a goldmine of comedy. I can see Ivan racing to get some duct tape right now.”

LOL,I am in agreement. Since when does Wenger goes about his business waving his cheque book. It is hidden in a vault, 3 miles under the earth, guarded by Chimeras.

  39. bennydevito

    Lewandowski & Pogba, imagine that!

Right, so where does everyone drink pre-games? Where’s a good pub to meet up? Who’s going this weekend and anybody fancy meeting up?

Or are you all ignoring me?

Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean you’re not after me.

    Ha ha!

  40. Wallace

“Our season will hinge on the three young Englishmen. If Walcott, Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain can step up in a truly significant way, we win the title.”

I’d add Ramsey to that list. if he can get near his 2013/14 level we’ll be looking good.

  41. Wallace

“We get a list of the players that Wenger wants. On the list is a centre forward, but I’m not going to tell you who he is. You’ve got to get the other team to want to sell him, but I think he wants to come. It basically comes down to whether the other team can find a superstar to replace him, because they don’t have to sell.”

“He also wanted a top goalie, so we went out and got him….We made enquiries about Cech last summer but Chelsea couldn’t sell him because they didn’t know how Courtois was going to settle in.”

has to be Benzema. and interesting we wanted Cech last summer as well, as Szcz had been excellent the season before last.

  42. TOLI83

I’m not going this weekend however go to the Wig & Gown, Horatia down Holloway Road.

    The George is good also.

  43. vicky

“You’ve got to get the other team to want to sell him, but I think he wants to come. It basically comes down to whether the other team can find a superstar to replace him, because they don’t have to sell”

I guess he is talking about Real selling Benzema if they get Reus.

  44. nasri's mouth

This is where you need Mertesacker and Ozil to nag Reus to join Real Madrid.

Would make the Benzema move more likely

  45. daz

We should put in a big bid for reus then we either get him or panic Madrid into buying him then get Benz sorted

  46. Uwot?

Lord Harris,Peter Hillwood ,sir chips all cut from the same cloth & can’t keep their gobs shut, foot in mouth bunch.prob just added another £15/20 million onto our target, assuming we do have one……

  47. Gregg

Given the Wenger answer re Benzema, nothing happening at the moment & Lord Harris’ interview, it seems certain that he is the main target.

I guess the plan is for Madrid to get Reuss and push Ronaldo in the central position.

  48. bennydevito

    Right then me fucko’s,

I’ve booked a coach and a hotel in Finsbury park & in light of the recent post regarding homosexually I’ve booked a double bed in case any of you Grovers want a bit of the devito after a few drinks…

I’m looking at you Redtruth… fancy exploring your sexuality with me?

  49. Le Prof

‘Imagine if we can wish for Ronaldo.’

After been told we could buy most players in the world bar probably half a dozen players that are ‘unbuyable’ who does this imbecile suggest?

I’d imagine Ronaldo was in that half dozen wouldn’t you dopey.

Wishing for him? I could sell you a magic lamp and make your wishes reality, honest.

  50. VP

Here we go the usual cock teasing, this time from Lord Harris . ”The only players that we can’t buy are Messi & Ronaldo”

Who is he trying to kid . We all know that the only thing that we are going to buy is fourth.

  51. Emiratesstroller

Most sensible people understand very well that Arsenal are not going to make
this summer wholesale changes to their squad.

However, the idea as some posters imply that Arsenal are not able to compete with the other major clubs in transfer market if we want to buy a single player for £50 million is ridiculous as Lord Harris maintained.

Arsenal are in actual fact in a better situation than most to do such a business,
because they do not suffer from liquidity problems. Despite spending in last
financial year over £100 million in transfers it would seem that it made little or
no impact on our bank balance, which was actually up at end of November against November 2013 and presumably will be at least the same as last year
at end of May 2015.That means we have over £200 million sitting in the bank.

What is true is that the number of world class players specifically strikers who are worth that sort of money is in very limited supply. If you are lucky one
    or two may materialise.

Another problem is that most of the best strikers are aged 28+, which means
that they will have little or no resale value at end of contracts.

Similarly the suggestion that we cannot compete on wages is also untrue. People forget that we brought in Campbell early 2000s at a wage of £100,000
pw, which was at the time the highest wage paid to any English Footballer.

What is true is that Arsenal cannot and will not be able to spend £200 million
in transfer market and nor is there any necessity for us to do so.

  52. Dusty Kart

This is Wenger talking about Lord Harris claim of £200 to spend

“He’s gone a bit overboard. It’s not true,” Wenger said.

“Our opponents, if they really want, have that money to spend. So it is not something that is absolutely exceptional and money in the bank doesn’t mean profit. We lost money the last six months.

“You can be bankrupt and have £200 million in the bank. If you have £500 million to spend three weeks later, you need to find £300 million.

“We are in a strong financial situation, a healthy one. I don’t want to go too much into it.

“I can understand that it makes headlines in the media, the amount of money, but what we want is to focus on the quality of your work and players and style of play and performance. That is what football is really about.”
    No money to spend lol!!!
