Arsenal embarrassed by smarter planning. Shocker.

Last night was quite the numbing experience. I said to a friend at the time of the draw, you almost want a big team to keep Arsenal on their toes. I still have horrible memories of losing to teams like PSV when it’s almost inconceivable to do so. Arsenal have traditionally suffered in the Champions League because we don’t take care of ourselves. If it’s a big team, we don’t go with a game plan to nullify talent (aka, ‘we have no special plan for Messi’) or last night, when it appeared we had no plan to take care of a very unambitious Monaco side with a terrific defensive record.

It’s hard not to be torn about the result in a way, and look, I’m no excuse maker, but you can’t not look at the chances we had and not wistfully imagine what could have been.

But then, if your aunty had bollocks… she’d be your transgender uncle.

Simple fact is we were utterly complacent and arrogant yesterday. The players looked at the injuries and the position Monaco hold in the Ligue 1 and they made a poor assumption we’d roll them. Well, turns out Jardim had other plan. I mean, it didn’t even feel like much of a plan. He played two banks of four and didn’t even really bother to press us. I think he had a right midfielder at right back. His outlet was Berbatov, a 20 a day smoker. They were there for the taking in my opinion.

The starting line up was more than enough to take them. I think it could have been more ambitious if I’m honest. A lot of people calling for the inclusion of Theo. He was dropped for #WELBZ who proved pretty ineffectual again despite putting in a workman like shift.

Despite have most of the early pressure, we didn’t really create much. The team didn’t seem to flow with much energy and considering we had Ozil and Cazorla on the pitch we created limited chance and the movement was pretty non-existent. I know it’s the first leg of the Champions League, but I kind of hoped for a bit of urgency. Play for the first goal, put them off their game plan then demolish them in the second half.

Well, it didn’t happen and our laissez faire approach was punished when Welbeck lost a challenge on the half way line, the ball was played to Moutinho who found Kondogbia, the Frenchman had all the time and space to gear up a shot… Coquelin not there, Per didn’t move in on the midfielder, the shot was ripped, it took a deflection and flat footed the keeper.

Now… I personally thought the keeper was slow to react considering how far out the shot came from. He was rooted to the ground, which would suggest he wasn’t properly on his toes. Others around me disagreed. For me, he should have made a better attempt there. Disappointing. Still, the focus of that cock up has to sit with our defensive unit falling asleep.

The first half played out to a few jeers. I’m never sure who’s doing it. It’s like some sort of weird secret speaker system hidden in the ground that Ivan controls. Anyway, key points were that Monaco did a great job tactically of killing our energy. A two man operation on Sanchez, two banks of four coupled with a total lack of interest by most of our team.

The second half started off with a bit more zip, sadly, our outlet was Giroud and he didn’t have a good day in front of goal. Sanchez fed him in after some tricksy work out wide, Giroud shinned it right back at him (Alex screamed great shot at that point and took pelters from the guys in front). His next chance came from a free header, he showed all the technique of a Seaworld sealion playing football with his mates in the tank, then his final chance came from a parried shot, the ball sat up for him to slot into a free net, he flew it over the bar like he’d seen a disrespectful pigeon on The Emirates roof he was trying to hit.

Total car crash strikerism. Really poor. But kind of expected. Giroud is a very good striker, but he’s not the sort of guy you can rely on at the highest level. I kind of cringed in the week when I saw articles pinging around about how Giroud is indispensable, because it’s just Arsenal fans being too smart for their own good. Giroud isn’t good enough to lead the line of a club that has serious ambitions.

Things went from bad to worse when Sanchez lost the ball which led to Fabinho breaking, pulling our whole defense over to his side of the pitch, he threaded Berbatov through allowed the Bulgarian to steal the second goal of the night. You know you’ve fucked up somewhere when the slowest man on the pitch is getting in behind you.

Arsene made relatively early changes. He brought on Theo for the hapless Giroud which gave us a bit of pace through the middle. Chamberlain made a difference, he’s driven whatever the occasion. He was on hand to curl an absolute undeserved peach of a goal into the top corner. At 2-1, you felt we could live to fight another day… Arsenal had other plans…we totally switched off, we allowed Currassco (the player I scouted for you the other month) in on our defence, he powered through on our goal and fired a shot that Ospina could only tip onto the inside post.

3-1 at home, to the easiest team left in the draw. Really disappointing.

Talking points:

Fans: Just a minor point to the large guy with the hipster beard screaming at a fan for standing up. Pressumably, because he wanted to sit down. I absolutely hate that this sort of behaviour can creep into the ground on a Champions League night. Stand up, get involved and add to the atmosphere. Utterly embarrassing carry on that led to a whole section not standing up because a grown man in his thirties bullied the section into sitting down. Pathetic. Watch it at home if you’re so tied to your seat.

Gibbs: Knew the writing was on the wall for last night when I caught glimpse of the back page of The Standard and you read Gibbs quote ‘We want to win it for the boss’. Nice one Gibbo. What about for the fans? What about not saying stuff like that at all?

Sanchez: He’s like our pressure release valve. When things get hot in the kitchen, give it to Sanchez. It becomes all about him and he tries too hard. He almost stops being a team player. It’s not his fault, we panic and give it to him in every instance. Kind of felt he killed a lot of moves last night because he was trying to be too cute. Still, my gripe isn’t with him, it’s with the rest of the team for putting that pressure on him. No accountability last night.

Adebennour: What a player. Interesting that the last time a centre back was that imposing in a Euro game, I was thinking about Alex of PSV who dominated us. He had so much heart. He put something on everything. Really, really impressed. Loads of communication.

Game Plan: Arsenal walked into that game without thinking. We had no answers for a team we knew would be all about defending and hitting us on the break. When I was in Lisbon this summer, I was told Jardim was a good coach. Very intelligent and tactically astute. He apparently identified that we detoriate in the second half and are suseptable to the counter. We played right into his hands and the collective mentality of his team outshined our offering. That’s the difference at the highest level, you can’t get away with not thinking. You can’t underestimate anyone. We did yesterday and paid, like we always do.

Ozil: Sorry, but once again, he showed he’s not up to it in the big games. He was largely anonymous and he offered nothing. He might be the dream player that only people that are super football nerds can understand… but he doesn’t cut it for me. He should have been yanked at halftime. How he didn’t get taken off is almost as amazing as it was against Spurs. Not sure he has the stomach for it.

Change it up: Wenger really does have a weakness to identify what teams are doing during a game and making changes. We didn’t really have much going on during the first half, yet no changes were made. The players don’t have the collective intelligence to see what’s going on around them. So you get these weaks performances where the only way to change the game is through a sub, not a different way of approaching the actual game from a structure stand point.

Conclusion: Come on, we all know what’ll happen… we’ll win 2-0 away from home and we’ll all be talking about what could have been.

‘Yeah. But at the end of the day, Giroud hits that shot 60 yards lower and we’d be in the semi finals of the CL, mate’

People focus on the wrong thing when they talk about Arsenal in the Champions League. It’s not about consistently qualifying for it that’s interesting, it’s consistently failing in it that is. 17 attempts and we consistently disappoint. Thing is, Wenger isn’t good enough to win it. He’s not getting any better. He’s not learning from year to year. We try the same thing every year, and fail.

We’re simply not a smart enough team under Wenger.

Still, as Hot Chocolate once said, I believe in miracles.

To be fair Reyes’ decline was down to himself, he was homesick and wanted to go back to Spain ever since Neville butchered him in that charity shield match. Wouldn’t blame Wenger for that.

Arshavin could have been handled better for sure.

RE Ozil, I don’t even think that his ‘decline’ is down to Wenger because since he’s been here he’s never performed against the big clubs and his limitations are becoming very apparent.

At Real it worried me when we signed him that I’d never really been that impressed with him in the Champions League for them, he never stood out and had a bit of a reputation for it. I was hoping that he’d change that over here where he didn’t have the luxury of depending on other WC players to do the job for him in the UCL but he hasn’t, I’m struggling to remember one big match in that he’s owned since he’s been over here barring the first half of the Napoli match last season.

It’s a shame because I think that he is a very gifted player, his ball control is immaculate and his vision is out of this world, he just doesn’t have as dangerous an armoury as other playmakers across Europe.

  3. Gunnerbust

In which big clubs in Europe would Per or Arteta be captain in?????
    None !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cause they wouldn’t get a game at a big club !!!!
With crap like this going on, we aren’t even good enough to win the Europa League!!!

  4. Lee

How did I prove you right?? You little mummy’s boy. Go eat tofu and juice you fanny.

At least I cheer the team on. You miserable tofu eating tampon

  5. Thomas

Was only a matter of time before Coquelin was going to get found out. And all the akb r*tards was like “we don’t need a new DM”. “The DM issue is solved”. Morons…

  6. YoungMurphy

Truly woeful performance. You have all covered it pretty well to be honest but I actually think – Dan TFebruary 26, 2015 10:48:39 – covered it best in that you just genuinely cannot imagine that many individual players have such stinkers.

Sure Ozil is what he is but the chance Giroud missed doesnt necessarily make him shit because he took a similar chance vs Palace (and yes an open goal from 5 yards should always be finished – I get that). And again, I do get we were thoroughly listless but I’d like to keep it in perspective.

Also noticed a couple comments – we need to win 3-0 in Monaco, not 2-0

Pedrita “look I’m no excuse maker,” sweetie that’s ALL you are is an excuse maker, your pathetic to say the least a pure buttercup!

  8. Blsany

Space is Per’s cryptonite, to the degree I seriously believe he did the inexplicable yesterday because of fear about how badly he would be exposed if he held the right position and waited for the through ball

  9. Ozy

Went on Untold to see what they’d say. First thing I read was:

“Last Friday I attended a modern jive dance in Cambridgeshire, despite having an Achilles injury, that should been keeping me off the dance floor for as long as it takes to repair itself.

I went because being at home night after night writing about Arsenal and Bob Dylan is OK but ultimately too much of a normally enjoyable thing. And I expected several of my favourite dance partners to be there.”

Wtf. Old, white guys… I swear..

  10. lemonadethatcoolrefeshingdrink

Arsenal the club got found out last night

Some people on here and i am not picking fights, but N5 who has mentioned Arsenal being a bigger club than Liverpool has delusions of grandeur.
They have 5 European Cups (i cannot call them Champions League cups due to the flawed champions league concept, i.e. arsenal have been in the Champions League for 17 seasons whilst only being champions of their respective league, what twice?) anyhow i digress

The whole club needs a shake up

we are a medium sized club with no European history playing against the true heavyweights of Europe…….

We have the most expensive tickets in the entire footballing universe and have one of the highest paid managers in the footballing world, for what?!?

4th place and the odd FA cup

    Yeah rightyo!

  11. Carts

Hahah…Wenger took one of the best performing #10 in europe and turned him into a fucking turnip overnight. I give you Arshavin.

Why’d being White got to do with listening to Bob dylan

  13. useroz

Seriously, ask Wenger WTF is he up to?

If we drew big /top teams, we aren’t good enough and lost.

If we drew small/ lesser teams, we aren’t good enough to put together a win.

And we pay 11m to Wenger??

Some of our plays were horrenrous. Last night.

  14. toniboy

I still say a better forward would have bailed us out yesterday…Per was poor but desperation only crept in due to not taking our chances in the first place. At least 2 goals more would have made the tie totally different.

  15. Cesc Appeal

    Still reeling from last night.

Something major needs to change this club, management, back room, coaches and playing staff.

We’re just stuck in a rut and have been for the best part of a decade. Fundamental mistakes in our set up from top to bottom just aren’t going away.

Gary Lineker talking about how amateurish Arsenal’s defending is, and always is in these sorts of games.

Jaime Carragher last night ‘Arsenal are so frustrating and I’m not even a fan…I hope next season I’m saying, why didn’t they buy a GK/CB/CM and a striker, because I’m sick of saying it and you’re sick of hearing it.’

Again it comes back to this cliché, well it is on here anyway, EVERYONE knows what’s wrong with Arsenal except the people that can actually do something about it.

They even honestly don’t know, don’t care, or their priorities lay elsewhere…I don’t know which is worse.

  16. David Smith

The players only partly to blame, some good players, but inferior manager and coaching setup.
Stan- Mr Mediocre, whats the point of blaming him, he doesnt care.
Wenger, hugely flawed and stuck in the past, but he is what he is, the real villains of this piece are those who ousted Dein, the one man on the planet who could make wenger tick. Then, to compound the error, they gave Wenger absolute power.
What I will say about Wenger, he wants to win major trophies more than anyone else at the club, sadly, he just is no longer capable.

  17. Carts

Gunnerbust – so fucking true it’s funny. Wenger has, time and time again, tried to fuse absolute mediocrity with very good and it essentially equates to average.

Mert getting a new deal when it’s clear as mud that he’s on a downward slide. Arteta can’t even walk up a flight of stairs anymore but rumours are that he’ll hang about to do after school activities with Diaby and Wilshere.

Until Wenger accepts that he is done as a top manager will we continue to get beat in the last 16 and finish 4th. If Wenger was so confident in his managerial ability, he’d have done away with tripe – bought Bony over Welbeck, bought a DM instead of trusting Arteta and Flamini and bought a WC fucking GK.

These things are so fucking evident to the point where you genuinely start to believe Wenger is false-flagging Arsenal.

  18. Cesc Appeal

    DS

And also, blaming the players would only be relevant if this sort of thing was anomalous, but we’re always talking about symptoms not the cause.

Players come, players go, coaches come, coaches go, assistant manager changes, fitness staff change…one constant.

  19. shad

    @mano’s gunner,

Ozil isn’t even worth 20mil. That’s a generous figure right now. He is world class but needs a manager that can fire a rocket up his bum, not baby him like a 42.5mil egg.

  20. Carts

CA – Graeme Souness always hits the nail with Arsenal when we fuck up.
I actually find my self wondering if he as manager would breath new life into our system and individual performances.

  21. kc

Nothing will change until Wenger is gone. Same shit, different season. Every year it becomes harder and harder to support a team with zero ambition to win.

  22. Ozy

How the fuck do we have a World Cup, showcasing the greatest footballing talent of the world…

And we looked at Ospina and went “hmm, he’ll do nicely, yes” ffs

Oh, I know. It was his price tag.

  23. shad

” The detailed analysis of each player’s performance is a waste of time IMHO. The preparation, the tactics, the team selection, the inspiration, the ability to change plan and personnel if the game’s going badly, changing things at half time, firing up the team for the second 45 minutes – all of this is the manager’s job. The buck stops with Wenger, end of. WENGER OUT, now more than ever.”

    THIS.

  24. Goondawg

The whole lot of ya. Fuck right off. As an arsenal fan, let me fucking mourn in peace. Not in the mood for this bullshit. I’m as upset as anyone though you guys find more glee in it so you can rub loyal fans so rightly fuck off, and surely curtains for Wenger is as apparent as the day 8-2 was the final straw. So fuck you.

Fucking watching my team balls up like that. This is the fourth time in as many years we have gone more than 2 goals down at the first leg in this same situation. Fuck sake! We never learn

“Some suit some don’t there is no reason still why we can’t beat Monaco three nil at the stad Louis.”

Do you seriously believe this — even after the shambles we saw last night? If so, I admire your optimism, more power to you… lol.

Even if we do achieve the impossible — it doesn’t take away from the fact that we shouldn’t be EVEN in this mess in the first place. Obviously this little fact will be forgotten whether we win or not. The problem is there is no accountability for Wenger that’s why he’s allowed to amass humiliating defeat after humiliating defeat.

    Carts

I didn’t hear what he said, I’ve avoided the media a bit but saw the Lineker, Carragher comments on Facebook; this is the most humiliated I’ve felt as an Arsenal fan.

Feels like the stronger evidence anyone has had in a while for why change is needed. Boring. Predictable. Fragile Arsenal.

Big game, or big occasion and we bottle it. Don’t forget we were so, so close to messing up the FA Cup final against Hull, a Gibbs header off the line stopped that being 3-0 inside 20 minutes.

We just can’t do it. All the hope that came out of that City game needs to be put into context, A) it is a bit of an anomaly really over the last 8-10 years B) City were in pretty bad form, no Yaya and a half fit Aguero, they went on to lose 2-0 to Middlesbrough, hadn’t they lost to Stoke or something as well?

It really is same old, same old. 2-1 up at Anfield, conceded with one of the last moves of the game, lose at Chelsea, lose to United (worst result of the season before this), lose to Spurs, lose to Monaco…always the same

  29. Rosicky@Arsenal

    People here are pathetic.
One bad performance and everybody is calling for wengers head. Calling Ozil and Caxorla and team as rubbish. This is simply calling too much.

We must be reasonable and support the players and manager as one poor performance in the season and people here lose there heads.

Had Giroud taken his chances v wouldn’t have lost. Monaco were lucky with there first goal and welbz got unluckily when theo blocked his shot.

Agreed v lost our composure but it could happen in football.

We are sitting 3rd in the EPL comfortably now thanks to wenger and the team.

Hopefully we can give an improved performance in France.

I take it you haven’t watched Arsenal these last few years? Let’s get you up to speed…

  36. useroz

Wengert can’t win the darn thing ‘cos he has degraded and along the way degraded AFC by adding/ keeping ordinary players/journeymean while hoping/ deluding himself year upon year they could improve and become world class.

Remember Wenger said Giroud could become WC early Feb? Totally fucking deluded.

Why are we paying Diaby and hope he’d recover? No sane business does that. Why are we not trading up from Wilshere, Flamini, Arteta etc? Add Ramsey to the list this summer. You’d only be loyal and positive for so long. 2 to 3 years is long enough to see real talent, otherwise move them on . We may miss occasional late boomers but at least we don’t constantly have so many duds/ deadwood – assuming AFC want to compete thatis.

  37. S Asoa

For a fair assessment of what went wrong always look at how restrained or subdued Bould is . In yesterday’s gam looked like our Don Quixote Wenger decided to take full control and this was apparent from his involvement as well as defensive frailties. Bould sets team defensively as could be seen in the previous successful runs.
Of course Le Imbecile takes FULL credit for victories and blames players or whatever scapegoat when things fall apart.
    WENGER OUT

Just a shame its full of gullible douchebags : /

  40. Leedsgunner

We are all hurting, personally I think the the time is not to gloat.

I want Wenger out, and I want a better striker than Giroud but I was utterly ashamed for the club last night, not gleeful every time Giroud missed. I hate to be proved right that Giroud is not top class — but I wish he had proved me wrong — and he had picked himself a hat-trick — we would have won and made a statement of intent. All we demonstrated last night was a display of complete contempt for what this club stands for.

Is this the reason why we moved into the that lovely stadium? It makes a mockery of the promises we were given as fans when the stadium was announced. We were told it was to help us compete with the biggest and the best clubs in world football — the truth is under Wenger we can’t even compete with the minnows!

Whether you want Wenger in or out — it’s a sad day for AFC.

Lee – old enough to fuck yo bitch!

Well clearly you didn’t see the post analysis then did you. The crux of the argument is that it’s the repetative shit that goes on when we’re shit out of ideas.

I know you’re numb to the fact that we struggle to get past the last 16 and challenging for 4th is our level, but don’t give me that hindsight crap.

  45. N5

Rosicky, you’re not the only one. I don’t sit here slagging the team off, I discuss things I’d like changed but don’t lump all in together as not everyone takes pleasure in a loss.

  46. GS88

Watching Barca the night before and seeing Messi, Suarez, and Neymar toying with City’s backline and then forward onto last night’s pasting from Monaco just highlights the fact that we will never win the UCL under Wenger.

Watching us in Europe is like watching a dog trying to chase his tail. We are not going to get there, certainly not under Wenger.

Imagine if we finished out of the top 4, get knocked by United in the FA Cup as well as this inevitable defeat in the return leg? I can certainly see some serious retaliations.

Listened to Jason Cundy last night and found myself agreeing with him which I don’t normally do. He said that Arsene had taken the club as far as he could. Well, I felt this for about 3 or 4 years now.

I say we go all out for Simone, but if we have to wait on him, why not try to get Koeman stop gap?

    Just my opinion

  47. Blsany

“Whether you want Wenger in or out — it’s a sad day for AFC.”
Not its sad day for Arsene Fc not Arsenal Fc.We want the pride of our club back.most of all we want belief back not groundhogday every year.

  48. Cesc Appeal

    Rosicky

No, you run on any time Arsenal do something like beat City and say “where are all the Wenger haters now.”

But then you will say losing those types of games doesn’t matter in the wider context, so why should it be used as a way of propping up Wenger then?

That last night was probably the most humiliating result we’ve had in a long while, more so even that 6-0 and 5-1 last season because Monaco are not great at all and were missing 5-6 first teamers.

But its the same problems we’ve had for the best part of a decade now, we can’t do big occasions. ’17 consecutive UCL qualifications”…turn that on its head, 17 consecutive failures. Only getting close once, especially when you consider some of the teams Wenger has had in that time, the Invincibles for example.

I don’t get this stubbornness in some fans, they just can’t say, yeah, maybe we should be looking for a younger, more flexible, tactically aware manager, one who will work with the club and his staff not act as some sad Custer like figure atop last stand mound, all only, listening to no one, protecting his philosophy of youth rearing, pretty tippy tappy football and player expression without tactical restriction.

“Rosicky, you’re not the only one. I don’t sit here slagging the team off, I discuss things I’d like changed but don’t lump all in together as not everyone takes pleasure in a loss.”

Hear, hear. I’m hurting like hell, today — I still cannot believe we were so inept.

Good to see you back N5… 😉

  52. Gladwyn

We must be reasonable and support the players and manager as one poor performance in the season and people here lose there heads.

Roaicky did you really mean that. If you did, you need some serious head examination

  53. underrated Coq

QUOTE: “Was only a matter of time before Coquelin was going to get found out. ”

How exactly did Coquelin get found out yesterday…? He wasn’t amazing but he wasn’t bad either. He was average to okay. If you think there are players out there who are always excellent, never having average games, then you are deluded.

One of the main reasons Coquelin was looking so impressive so far was that he used to be highly disciplined and rarely ventured out of our half. We are used to see him playing right in front of the two central defenders but it didn’t seem to be the case in the second half yesterday. Perhaps this is one thing you can criticize him for.

But then again, judging by the way we went gung-ho so early in that half, pushing our CDs almost till the half way line, I think it has more to do with Wenger’s half-time instructions than Coquelin’s indiscipline.

I think Arsenal’s problems stem more from the Coquelin- Cazorla-Ozil midfield.
We can blame Coquelin all we want but how easy is it to do the job of three..? Even Matic might find it hard to play with one guy who’s a midget and another who shies away from any sort of contact whatsoever.

Am I right in saying this Cazorla-Ozil midfield has looked poor in almost every game..? Ramsey has gotten heavily criticized on here but you can see how we miss his defensive contributions, his tenacity and the energy and athleticism he brings to our midfield.

This Cazorla-Ozil midfield should be dropped imo because there’s simple no energy there. No wonder our midfield has struggled to dominate games.

  54. Rosicky@Arsenal

    @N5

its a football game and one team win and one team lose. sometimes you dont get it right. managers tactics can get wrong the players can have a off day .refree decision can get wrong.luck has also a part to play.

Why we blame the team and manager on one bad result.

Even the best teams on the planet can have a bad game. I have said a number of times and proved on numerous occassions.

    People forget too soon.

Sick to my stomach… what utter utter tripe we were served last night. You know what makes me even more cross? The fact that idiots likeMichael Owen will be using it to justify their supposed football knowledge…

Damn you Arsenal — right before my birthday weekend as well! Fuck!

  57. N5

I didn’t see the post match interview, but is there any truth in what a Spud colleague told me today about Wenger digging out the team and saying something along the lines of, “I have no defence for what happened tonight and the team had no defence” or is he pulling my leg?

I only ask because Wenger is normally loyal to the team regardless of how badly they played, even making himself look a little silly in the process at times.

  58. David Smith

Rosicky@Arsenal, fair enough, but there is a pattern here, and we have a manager who does nothing aboout this pattern and an owner who does nothing about the manager.
Our owner is of the Mike Ashley Randy Lerner school in terms of ambition, but sadly, not as likely to see up as those two.
I feel sorry for the players, many are better than this manager is making them look, they must know that as well.

  59. N5

Ahh no that sucks Leeds, it was my Birthday on Monday, so I see this as a late gift from Wenger!! he’s such a giving man!

Don’t dwell on it buddy, get out and drink and stay drunk until gone May and all will be fine.

  60. N5

Rosicky@Arsenal, that’s a fair comment, but I was really only replying to your “only I support the club on here”. I’d say that all of us support the club, we all just have different views on loyalty.

  61. Rosicky@Arsenal

    Ces

Sorry mate i dont troll here often.
Since we win most of the times i dont have much to say but since we lost last night i am here to support the team.

Most people want wenger out without considering that there is no guarantee we will remain as a top club.

Look at liverpool and United after they loat there managers .

  62. Cesc Appeal

    Rosicky

So in that case just stick with a busted flush, limp into fourth every year? Just in case we lose that £35 Million a year?

Four Four Two had an article and they said something bang on, ‘a new manager at Arsenal may finish 1st, or 10th, with Arsene Wenger they will do neither.”

  63. Leedsgunner

Rosicky is right in one thing.

    “People forget too soon.”

Next good result — Wenger will praise the team to high heaven again, glossing over the errors made last night. People do forget too soon, that’s what the club is banking on.

    “People forget too soon.”

How else do you think Wenger got a new contract after capitulating to Man United 8-2, Liverpool 5-1, Man City 6-3, and Chelsea 6-0 (on his 1000th game in charge no less!)

Sure he delivered us the FA Cup last year, but even that was by the skin of his teeth!

People like George Graham and Bruce Rioch must be thinking — what must Wenger actually do to get fired?

Someone just said Wenger wants to win trophies,is this true???? And the poster went forward to say “but he cant” so why not step aside if he cant do it again
I said yesterday our problem isnt player, blame Ozil as you can, called them any sort of names you like but believe me even if we bring in Messi and Ronaldo, join Neuer and Kondogbia in there,we will still struggle when it matters most, our coaching are flawed,we just buy players without setting the proper structure for the player to excel, have we noticed Sanchez since Ozil and Cazorla are played together???what is the gameplan, this summer we will go out and buy Pogba and push him in the team not knowing how, when and where to use him and he gives below par performance, you hear Pogba is overhype,:………for me Wenger needs to step aside so another manager with a plan can come in,without that no one will change our story from what we are seeing

  66. Rosicky@Arsenal

    @ coq

I think coq cazorla ozil midfield will b fine.
It was only that Monaco parked the bus and we wanted to be too effeicent and got punished on counter.

If we play intelligently and keep the defensive shape i am sure we will be fine.

As caz and ozil can create without pushing the panic button.

People dont see that if the opponent park the bus nobody can score freely.
Credit goes to our midfield that they still created at leats 4 to 5 goal scoring opportunities despite Monaco had parked the bus.

  67. Thank you and goodnight

Chris Hudson on Arsenal fan tv was bang on the money about out fans being arrogant. What I think he also meant by fans is the AKB section of the Arsenal fans who are extremely arrogant. You just have to read Rosicky@Arsenal’s comment about us being a top club.

  68. SpanishDave

When I read that Giroud is a good striker I cannot help but laugh.
Mertsaker went missing for all 3 goals, he has to be dropped. Gibbs should not be on the pitch. Welbeck cannot stay on the wing he just ball watches and wanders into the centre, as does Walcott. Our tippy tappy midfield cannot handle direct firceful players. It goes on,

Wenger is finished we get little spells of football against lower teams but the overall trend is diwn.
Wenger is never to blame, he justs sits on the bench and skirms, Steve Bould is a fraud, defensive ciach dont make me laugh.
Wengers religion goes on devotees turn a blind eye, and so it goes on.

Giroud should be in Madame Trussaud’s.

It’s a shame OG had left his football boots at home and picked up some clown shoes.

Also, why don’t we just park the bus too and force their hand. If a club won’t come forward, then make them come forward?

  72. Thank you and goodnight

    Rosicky@Arsenal

    ” parked the bus” ….

Sorry but what did you expect them to do? That was part of their game plan to sit deep and hit us on the counter. What part of that is parking the bus? Oh I get it….you expect every team to turn up and bend over for us like we do against most top teams.

  75. reality check

    #Teamozil

I’d like to offer a different perspective on the ozil role and why it seems he’s not fulfilling it.

ok so yes he hasn’t set the world on fire, but i think he has a valid reason for his performances. To draw a comparison to one of our favourites. Bergkamp. Now yes there is only one Dennis but imagine Bergkamp at arsenal without Wrighty Anelka Henry. Add to that no vieira and no Adams or keown.

I think we would all recognise Bergkamps brilliance, skill touch vision. But on his own, without any protection in the Premier League. I find it hard to believe he would be able to reach leagend status. Bergkamp just behind giroud. Well he can supply as many sublime through balls he wants if Giroud cocks it up 5 times then scores on the sixth, whose fault is it.

ok to simple, fine, how many times did bergkamp or Ljungberg get tackled, dispossessed. How many times was one of their dribbles or passes cut out for it then to result in an opposition goal?

Not many. Because they had Vieira Petit gilberto even parlour clening up those mistakes. Mistakes all players make. Some less than others but mistakes none the less. Mabey bergkamp would have become a legend in spite of playing with inferior players. Mabey. Yes.

I just struggle to believe Bergkamp with all his ability would have been as influential whilst playing in this current team. The level of shit-ness would have been just to much for even him to overcome.

I feel like at Madrid. Ozil had big brothers. Big man ronaldo. If you dont know, CR7 is a beast physically, yeah he goes on like a pretty boy but still, hes a moutain. Then you have big man benzy, pepe, Ramos even khadeira. All of them for me protected ozil in some way or another. Also, they had leadership skills. Ozil could look to them for reassurance and guidence when things got tough.

Just because Ozil has a big reputatuon doesn’t mean he has a big personality.

Im sure in all of our lines of work there is a guy who is good at his job but you or someone like you with experience need to coach him a little. Give him advise, show him a few tricks of the trade. He’s a good addition to your company but, he cant do it by himself. You could. But he cant.

i feel ozil needs a big brother. They all do. No leaders no mentors. Mert had a go at ozil for not thanking the fans that one game. Ozil shrugged him off and gestured. Get out my face.

I dont think ozil would have done that to someone he respects and looks up to like CR7 or Ramos or even Casilles (spell.)

It’s Wenger job to balance the team not Ozils. Hopefully paulista will surprise us.

I think as fans we expected to much from Ozil. I don’t agree with it but there are just some players who need someone to put an arm around them and make them FEEL like 42Mil.

    just saying…

    (Cue F.O.R.C!)

ONE bad performance? ONE? Try scores of bad performances.

And “bad” doesn’t even do justice to last night — or many previous nights. Try “shambolic,” “disgraceful,” “disastrous,” “shameful,” etc.

There simply is no hope for supporters like this.

  79. salparadisenyc

Lets be fair, our performance is bringing the blog down.

It smelled like dung mixed w/ Giroud’s corpse’ish scent across the Atlantic this morning. Powers that be in the city threw up the amber alert out of confusion.

May we never mention Ozil with DB10 until he figures out how to walk on water.
Dennis is a compassionate man, had he not the fear of flying he’d put Ozil and Giroud both out of their misery with a leveled hunting rifle.

  80. N5

Rosicky@Arsenal, I didn’t say I wanted us too, I said when you are facing teams that do, then why not force their hand?

Isn’t it better to win boring, then lose with style? (not that I consider our football beautful anymore, but you get my point).

  81. Bamford10

I don’t know how you say that seeing as we’ve struggled in every game played with that midfield.

QUOTE: “It was only that Monaco parked the bus and we wanted to be too effeicent and got punished on counter.”

Almost every team parks the bus against us knowing it works 99% of the time. We always tend to struggle breaking down organised sides. You suggest that Caz-Ozil midfield offers Arsenal a better chance against such sides. Well, that’s not been the case so far, right?

I see more negatives than positives with that midfield.
    1. Technically superior, yes but also incredibly easy to hassle off the ball. What’s the point of all the technical skill if they can’t get on the ball..?
    2. No pace or explosiveness so its easy to crowd them out and stifle them.
    3. Way too Lightweight to dominate.
    4. Absolutely struggle against high tempo and pressing.

I just wonder how some of those playets are feeling today ? Sadly I bet not as pig sick and gutted as us. Kos, Coquelin, Ox, Sanchez ? Many others ? Bet Gabriel hates losing. Time to give some of them a kick up the arse and bench them for a bit

Giroud 5 clesr chances ffs. Header from 5 yards and a shot that was harder to miss than score

At 2-1 I thought we still had a sniff as we played terribly but still created good chances. I’m still gutted.

Pedro – good write up. Summarized a lot of what I was feeling.
Team played like 11 players on a different agenda to each other.
What the hell are we even doing?
Are we playing to Girouds strengths? Ha….
Are we playing to Sanchez’s strengths? One man pressing crew.
Are we playing to Ozil’s strengths? Runners and movement
Are we playing to Santi’s strengths? Possession, Passing and triangles.

No… it’s all over the map. And the person who assembled this piecemeal team is AW. It’s good to have a style of play that’s adaptable but first you have to have one to begin with. And then no effort after the first ten minutes on top of that. It is numbing.

So Barca get the best out of messi in comparison. Though he’s amazing in both. Barca are better constructed to maximise messi’s ability. In. Comparison.

its different. Why? Who knows. But if the WC player is surrounded by at best, squad level players at arsenal, Will he really perform to his maximum ability?

Stick to the parallels. Its not ‘is ozil as good as dennis’? Of course not. Common sence discussion shouldn’t need to be stated as we all know what is and what isn’t.

Still can’t get over that performance last night. And Giroud was just terrible. Definitely proved that he doesn’t deserve to be starting for us. I mean what was it about 7 shots and couldn’t get a single one on target.

  92. salparadisenyc

    Lee

Giroud is as one dimensional as they come an ultra limited striker. He’s good at those inside the box tapins and near post headers. If it smells of awful call it what it is, he was sooo poor on all accounts last night. Had 6 shots w/ 0 on target and moved like molasses otherwise.

I’m a member of team Ozil, but the dude was utter rubbish last night. Really one of his poorest performances in the red n white. Neville’s commentary spot on as usual. I fear for his future with the club if that character continues appearing at our bigger ties, even Romford may cut him loose if thats possible. Once the numbers turn inside the Emirates, no saving him. Ask Gervinho.

Really? I get wanting a new manager and wanting new players, but wanting your team to lose? How can you call yourself an Arsenal supporter if you don’t support them.

I know your response will be ‘I’m an Arsenal supporter not an Arsene supporter and I want us to lose to get rid of him’ or words to that effect – but I just can’t ever imagine wanting Arsenal to lose, regardless of the players or manager we have.

  94. cladicus

Arsene is always to blame, but the players have to take a huge chunk of this defeat. It’s like the whole team collectively decided to play their worst game in ages. Also Oxlade, a microcosm of his Arsenal career for me. A flash of brilliance followed by complete implosion. Welbeck is useless, we talked too kindly of Giroud(who I still love btw) so he repaid us with a truly shocking performance. My brother asked me as I screamed 2-0 as soon as the ball broke past Per why we keep doing this to ourselves. Fight so hard for champions league places when we are just going to embarrass ourselves year after year.

  95. Giroud's Toblerone Boots

We were lucky. Le Coq should have been sent off and then who knows how much worse it would have been…

A mass clearout starting with Wonga is imperative. I would keep:

DEF. Debuchey, Kos, Bellerin, Gabriel (by default)
    MF. Ramsey, Rosicky, Ox,
    FW. Sanchez, Walcott,

Sell/release the rest of the cunts.

The only reason to want the team to loose is the last resort to get rid of Wenger and his cronies. Wenger simply will not go even if we lost yhe next 3 games 6-0.
He simply has an emormous ego and simply lives off of past glories.
We continue to fail in europe, and despite being the 5th biggest club we are nowhere near being 5th best in europe.
Wenger assembles the team, he organises tactics and instructs them how he wants to play each game.
Its his fault but heh ho he doesnt want any of the blame.
Fans pay fortunes of their hard earnt cash they deserve better.

We are shite, are no longer a force in top tier football, and until wenger goes nothing will change.

Fabregas, Vieria, overmars, Henry, Bergkamp, Adams, Parlour

Ok good great we’re on the same page.
now take Overmars name and ability back then. And drop him in newcastles team today. Is it the same? Will he play and achieve the same?

Normally weaker teams park the bus against us so we play with them offensively.

Top teams dont park the bus bar chelsea.
it means you want us also to play defensive football agianst high ranked teams and play for draws or get a lucky win and play boring stuff to avoid a defeat.

Obviously its not a big ask to park bus and play defensive football but then why would i watch Arsenal play ?

I watch Arsenal and City bcos of there offensive displays TBH.

    watching chelsea is mostly boring.

“Its either you build it around him, or get rid.”

It would be interesting to know if there were any promises made when he was signed. Because we definitely haven’t attempted to do this.

He was very poor last night and has had quite a few poor games. However, he has only played 11 games total this season and was injured quite a while. Last season I give him as a settling in period.

I actually thought his form has been better recently (excluding last night when the entire team was utterly rubbish). He has scored 3 and assisted 3 in 9 EPL games this season. Not too bad coming back from injury. I think when the team isn’t playing to his style he really struggles to have any influence on a game. He needs runners and mobility around him. He also needs protection which he was never going to get in last nights set-up.

There is still a world class player in there but if we want to see him again then you’re spot on – we must build the team around him to get the best out of him. Play to his strengths. Otherwise, he is going to be a passenger in most games and you’re right, we might as well move him on.

    Cladicus –
School yard errors. As a person who started out as fullback very young, the first thing they teach you is when one bombs forward the other hangs back. Gibbs isn’t playing with Sagna anymore. And Bellerins inexperience showed. Mert….. shocking. Koscielny….. achilles injury? I don’t know….. looked disinterested.
So ya it’s the players but who prepares them mentally to avoid the same errors? Even the best need reminders. And Bould was like a boulder and AW the usual nervous bench sitting. Lack of leadership.
Same thing usually happens when we get humiliated. AW blames them after the fact. I can’t chalk this one up to bad day at the office because it’s systematic and repeated. How many goals have we given up on the counter
this year where the other team has 2 shots on target 2 goals? Seems like every match but I know it isn’t.

You premier league fans really make me laugh. Constantly underrating the standard of other leagues and belittling their ability.

“a very unambitious Monaco side”, “Play for the first goal, put them off their game plan then demolish them in the second half.”, “The starting line up was more than enough to take them.”. Seriously?! Still gonna say something like that after last night’s game?

Monaco are comfortably a better team than arsenal now. They topped a much tough champions league group than that of arsenals. Their backline is miles ahead and their midfield of kondogbia, toulalan, and moutinho is comfortably better than cazorla who’s played out of position, ozil who can’t fit into a team with such average off-the-ball movement, and coquelin who’s name really shouldn’t have anything to do with a team that supposed to be a big team. Berbatov might be past his prime but he’s still better than giroud, i.e mr.takes an hour to shoot big clumsy frenchman. Carrasco is easily better than than welbeck, joke of an englishman who can’t shoot to save his life. Only thing going for you guys is alexis sanchez, who has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of for his performance last night.

There’s no reason not to rank ligue 1 ahead of PL now. PSG who are second in the league have a squad that would put any English club to shame. Monaco who are 4th in the league owns the living daylights out of all those teams fighting for fourth spot e.g arsenal west ham united Southampton etc
