Mourinho embarrasses himself for the bigger picture

Will have to race through this today because I have a mad busy day pitching.

So, first up, the Arsenal win juggernaut continues to power on at pace. The Palace game didn’t look pretty, but we did what we needed to do to take the three points. There weren’t many magical highlights for me, but there’s that unease watching Ospina flap about. I’m glad he’s been given a run, but I’m just sad he’ll probably have to drop a giant clanger before he’s removed. What he did in injury time, when he flew out to tip a cross away, was, well, pretty poor tekkers. He’s just not the ticket for me… frame aside, I think he lacks quite a lot of the top level basic skills.

Other good news? Well, teams dropping points all over the place. United dropped 3, Spurs dropped one against West Ham which kind of works and Chelsea opened the door for us in the title challenge. All exciting stuff. We’re pushing hard for third now. In the driving seat if you consider our fixtures list.

… and United. Superb eh? Hopefully that result at Swansea asks more questions of a squad being brutalised by a man with ego and power on the mind, over putting a system in place that the players can work to.

What other mega bits have we to clear up today? Oh, how about Jose on Soccer Saturday? I do like to listen to him, but that little act of petulance was really not befitting of a top flight manager. When you earn that sort of cash, have that sort of rep, you shouldn’t be hijacking TV programmes to push your messaging. It was car crash at times. He slagged Wenger unprovoked. Whether he was right or not, I have no idea why he felt the need to open up old wounds. Then he slated Sky for going on at his players when his boys suffer hard tackles. Just all felt a little surreal considering how nasty his players can be.

Jose uses slots like yesterday to gain a psychological advantage on opposition teams. That little show yesterday was about making referees fear making decisions against his players. He’s been trying to hammer referees for a while. I hope they stand strong. Refs should be independent and they shouldn’t fear managers trying to game the system.

Mourinho and his behaviour off the pitch is why he couldn’t land a job at Barca. That’s why a team like United will probably never sign him. He damages institutions to gain some extra percentage points. I don’t think I’d like him at Arsenal. A winner, sure, but he’s not a patch on Guardiola in my eyes.

Tonight, the club are launching the invincibles documentary. That’s going to be one of those things you watch when you’re having a down week. Whenever I watch stuff on that team, it takes you to another place. When Arsenal are doing well, it feels like you’re doing well in every area of your life. So many fond memories!

The AST also have Raphael Honigstein at their event this evening, worth paying the membership fee alone. If you get the chance to head down, I’m sure there will be a truck load of insight into Arsenal’s German players as well as what they do differently over in the Bundesliga!

Final point, that I don’t want to labour on, is Wenger and his use of tactics. There was a piece by Hoddle about using prozone back in the day to analyse teams and their approaches. A lot of people have used this snippet to showcase that our manager is really into analysis.

Look, firstly, there are plenty of player quotes around that point to our lack of preparation, but here’s the best way to know whether we do it… look at what you’ve seen on the pitch over the past 10 years. Look at the surprise on the pundits faces when we turned over City. Using a version of Prozone was big in the eighties, but hey, Super Mario Brothers on a black and white Gameboy was also state of the art back then, you wouldn’t put that infront of an 8 yaer old these days and expect a high five. If you don’t upgrade your tech, the way you think and the way you utilise that data, it’s all pretty pointless.

… and, if you think he is using tactics and data to its maximum, well, even more cause for concern, because you’re basically saying he’s doing it really f*cking badly.

Right, that’s me done. Have a mega day!

Mourinho’s stunt to go on Sky to air his grievances is laughable. Shenanigans.

Three points earned on Saturday. We made hard work of it.
Thought Welbeck and Ozil were good. Giroud and Sanchez have had better days. Coquelin and Cazorla put in a shift. We faced heavy pressure and as a result, our passing was substandard.

  2. Romford Ozil Pele

So what are we going with on Wednesday? Gonna need to be smart with squad management over the next couple months.

  3. Wallace

Mourinho’s just boring. whenever his team starts to wobble he throws his toys out the pram. just boring. any other manager trying to excuse a naff performance in that way would just get laughed at.

  4. tunnygriffboy

Palace will give anyone a tough game at Selhurst. Physical, nuggety, loads of pace , a motivated manager, nutty fans and a shite pitch. A real handful.

We have Hull, Qpr and Burnley away. Winnable but you know the intensity they’ll bring to the game

Ox back this week. Bench v Monaco, start v Everton I think.

  5. Dream10

Ancelotti 78 wins in 100 matches for Real Madrid

Reus 109 matches for Dortmund 51 goals and 43 assists.

    Both sensational

  6. Wallace

    for Monaco –

    Ospina

    Bellerin – Mert – Kos – Monreal

    Coquelin – Cazorla

    Walcott – Ozil – Sanchez

    Giroud/Welbeck

think he’ll go with the free scoring Giroud, but definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Welbeck get the nod.

  7. Romford Ozil Pele

Ah Ox is back? Good news. Can see Wenger going with the same team against Monaco, maybe Bellerin in for Chambers. Then rotate a bit for the Everton game on Sunday. Who knows though, hard to tell.

  8. Nasri's Mouth

Wallace: Mourinho’s just boring. whenever his team starts to wobble he throws his toys out the pram.

I suspect there’s an element of taking the pressure on himself and off his players, which is what a lot of managers do, but the bloke is a bit psychotic too.

I can’t imagine him being at Chelsea for 10 years somehow

  9. Romford Ozil Pele

    “Walcott – Ozil – Sanchez”

Would be more inclined to do that away from home. Monaco are gonna come and defend deep, Theo is pretty ineffective in those kinds of situations. Either Welbz or even Rosicky for me. I want complete domination of the ball in this game, get Santi/Ozil on it as much as possible.

  10. Dream10

    Wallace

Don’t see Giroud being dropped. He has 8 in 11 and in very good form. Walcott will likely have to settle for a place on the bench. Welbeck’ work rate and decent form ensures that he will retain his place instead of Theo. Agree with you on Bellerin returning at RB (if fit).

Would you take a clean sheet on Wednesday?

  11. Ughelligunner

    Underrated coq/Leeds ,
    why do you lap up
to mourinho? Last season, he said we had better Strikers compared to chelsea in Giroud, Bentner and Sanogo while giving excuses to him not able to win the league (because he was afraid to fail) and you were or lapping up to him just like chelsea fans do.

Comparing chelsea’s best 11 to arsenal’s and their bench, wouldn’t you say they should be going out to win the league by a country mile while entertaining us with fantastic football if it was Wenger?

They have 2 world class goalies, ivanovic is better than our 2 left backs, Cahill//john terry than mertesaker,
Aziplicuta than 2 of our left backs. 3 fantastic dms.

While our only two world class players we had, one just started playing this January plus our seasonal injuries n you are wondering why we are here.

Last season our players were fit and took us to the top until injuries destroyed us.

Lets talk about the injuries and average players we have and not about competing because we are still way behind them.

  12. tunnygriffboy

Matic is a more rounded player than Coquelin. His stats are lower as he ofteten plays with Mikel or Ramires and has more of a licence to go forward. Chelsea let him go for a pittance. In the intervening years in Portugal he developed and came back for 25 million. He developed at around the same age as Coquelin is now. Can Coquelin do the same ? Wish some would cut him some slack.

Mourinho turning on Wenger is merely a smokescreen. It gives better headlines than his sides dip in form, their fans behaviour and his behaviour. Odious man, odious club

  13. Emiratesstroller

    Pedro

Ospina is suspect and frankly not as good as Szczesny despite my misgivings about latter. He lacks solidity and presence.

Our team continues to struggle in games where opposition plays ‘pressing and
high tempo game’ against us. Our defence and of course midfield are suspect in such games. This is as much about composure and leadership as physical
    competitiveness.

There is not much point expressing an opinion about Mourinho. He is a Jeckyll and Hyde character. He will never come to Arsenal as a Manager despite his pedigree.

Looking at the League at moment there are now two teams vying for Title and
another 5 clubs competing for qualification. I had hoped that one or two would
have dropped by wayside by now, but unfortunately that is not the case.

Arsenal do have a slight advantage with fixture list because we have played two less home fixtures than away AND we have two games out of three at home against our competitors.

The one major concern is that we have still got a commitment to CL and FAC
whereas our competitors have a less demanding schedule after next weekend.

  14. Nasri's Mouth

Emiratesstroller: Ospina is suspect and frankly not as good as Szczesny despite my misgivings about latter. He lacks solidity and presence.

    Agreed.

Ospina could well come good (as first choice) but he needs some work off the pitch.

I think his status got elevated after those initial clean sheets (where he was hardly tested) and peoples dissatisfaction with Szczesny

  15. Romford Ozil Pele

“Would you take a 0-0 on Wednesday night?”

Not the worst result, of course. But we’re at home, 85% of players fit, in relatively good form etc. I’d be disappointed if we couldn’t win this game and keep a clean sheet at the same time. 2-0 would be great. That said, Monaco themselves have picked up massively in 2015. Moutinho and Kondogbia are great too so we’ll have to watch for them.

  16. Wallace

    Dream

think we’ll really go at them in the first leg. try and kill it off before the return. hoping for a Napoli at home-type performance.

  17. Romford Ozil Pele

Not L’Oreal’s biggest fan but fair play to him on reaching 50 goals. 8 in his last 11. Already into double figures despite being out for 3 months. Fair fair play. A good striker despite his limitations.

  18. tunnygriffboy

    Wallace

I put the very same team down on the other thread. Away in Monaco would go Ozil on left with Welbeck and Ox up top so we keep pace and have work rate. Santi, Jack and Coquelin in midfield to beef it up a bit

Has to rotate v Everton and Qpr. Shouldn’t keep same team for Everton and then make wholesale changes for Qpr. Make sensible changes in both keeping side strong. In some ways the man u game on the Monday is a good thing ( not for fans ) as it gives good rest after Qpr game.

  19. Ughelligunner

Underrated coq, if Mourinho brings the best out of players like you allude to and wenger does not,

why does mourinho sell his players so easily, without given them time to adapt and maybe mould them. lol.

He sells who does not offer his team anything close to defense and attacking strength.

Remember last season he had public issues with Hazard because of defensive duties, but this season he has cover up for it by Matic and fabregas doing the work while hazard apply his attacking strength to the fullest.

Mourinho should be getting more out of his chelsea world class squad, rather than complaining.

Earlier in the season they were fantastic because they were not under pressure, now everybody has woken up and he feels he needs to win at all cost.

  20. Emiratesstroller

We have a dilemma this week in team selection. We would like to win comfortably on Wednesday. A couple of goals would not go a remiss, because whilst Monaco are defensively solid they are not prolific goalscorers.

On the other hand we do have a difficult game against Everton on Sunday. Yes
Everton have not played particularly well this season, but they do seem to cause us problems as we discovered last season.

In normal circumstances I would say that we should win this game comfortably because they are playing in Europa Cup on Thursday. However, they won
the first tie fairly comfortably last week so that they may well rest players for
    return fixture.

  21. Ughelligunner

Underrated coq, Sterling has been playing non stop football for 3yrs and Chamberlain has played only this season consistently while getting injured every year and you talk of regression?

Are you so blind, that you can see?

Choose a Liverpool player that has lived up to the expectations when they were bought by bredan rogers.

Starting with Sakho you guys all accused wenger for not buying.

  22. Micheal

Maureen is good copy for the media and always shouts loudest when Chelski have not won. A draw provokes outrage, a defeat produces shrill claims of conspircacy and sendings off or bookings, etc bring school-girl hysteria. Headlines for a day or so and everyone has conveninently overlooked the result. Job done.

It is all an act to divert attention from what happened on the pitch.

Maureen’s ego is bigger than anything in football. Nothing he says is off the cuff. It is all designed for a purpose – e.g. provoke a reaction or divert attention. Very simple and crooks at Chelski are happy to go along with it. Small club, no class.

Do not, at any price, ever let that cunt anywhere near Arsenal.

  23. tunnygriffboy

    Emirates.

They may rest some but can’t rest everyone. We have the likes of Gibbs, Gabriel, Wilshere, Ox, Tr7 and rotation of front players to come in. We have a bit of depth now.

  24. Wallace

    tunny

not a fan of Ozil on the left. maybe on the right…but in Europe i’d like to see him always at 10. for some reason i’m expecting a really big performance on Wednesday.

  25. DB10

Mourinho know what he was doing when he requested to be the guest on Goals On Sunday. He knows that his team is stuttering! He knows that the wheels might come off if it goes like this. Read what Guardian wrote on this, which in part says
“……This mirrors a trend which reveals that since Boxing Day, Chelsea’s match average for shots on target, passes and possession have all declined while they have allowed opponents more shots and conceded more goals per game. And, most crucially, the team that had looked so imperious have won only three of their past eight matches.

Performances of some key players have dipped. Diego Costa has not yet regained form following his three-game ban for stamping on Liverpool’s Emre Can last month, and without his sharpness Chelsea struggled to penetrate against Burnley.

Cesc Fàbregas seems similarly rusty as he continues his comeback from injury. The defence is coughing up chances and Mee’s goal proved that Thibaut Courtois cannot always rescue those in front of them. Even Eden Hazard, who spun wonderful magic to create Ivanovic’s goal, lapsed into inconsistency……”

So what Mourinho is doing is try to take the spotlight away from the teams failings. My question is WHY THE FUCK DID SKY ALLOW HIM TO DO IT? Is’t this considered as unfair advantage? I bet you on on anything he decided to come on TV having the Sunday’s showdown at Wembly!

  26. kc

Moanrinho or mournrinho, no matter how one says it thats his trait. Only club like chelsea will tolerate him as they do not have any reputation to tarnish.

  27. Le Prof

‘A draw provokes outrage, a defeat produces shrill claims of conspircacy and sendings off or bookings, etc bring school-girl hysteria. ‘

Sounds a lot like on here.

  28. Nasri's Mouth

DB10: My question is WHY THE FUCK DID SKY ALLOW HIM TO DO IT

I’d bet that SKY would happily have any of the top managers in the studio but that none actually can be arsed / have a reason to do it.

Mourinho has probably had an open invite for months, but it’s only this week when there are pro-Chelsea reasons for him to do it.

  29. Romford Ozil Pele

‘A draw provokes outrage, a defeat produces shrill claims of conspircacy and sendings off or bookings, etc bring school-girl hysteria.

    Lol, touché

  30. Dream10

After Monaco (H), we’ll have four matches in 14 days at the start of March.
    Mar 1 Everton (H), Mar 4 QPR (A), Mar 9 Man Utd. (A), Mar14 West Ham (H)

Rotation is necessary. Don’t expect Wilshere to make a start in the XI until
    West Ham.

I think long term, Welbeck will continue being a wide player in a 4-2-3-1

  31. Emiratesstroller

    tunnygriffboy

Agreed we have some depth, but will Wenger rotate?

My guess is that Monaco will come to London and try to contain us. It is important that we try and win this game. Personally I would play Walcott rather than Welbeck on this occasion, because of his pace and finishing.

I would also play Szczesny, Bellerin, Gibbs and Gabriel as we did against Middlesbrough.

  32. Romford Ozil Pele

“I would also play Szczesny, Bellerin, Gibbs and Gabriel as we did against Middlesbrough.”

Far too much rotation. You’re also advocating changing pretty much a whole back five which doesn’t make sense either. Defence is one of those areas you need consistency. We’ll rotate but I’d be surprised if it’s more than 3 players.

  33. Ughelligunner

Who else remember’s the argument that Wenger never gives the opposition team any praise when we lose? And that Mourinho is/not a whinner like wenger.

  34. Emiratesstroller

Monaco do not score many goals, but their defence is impressive. They have conceded just ‘one goal in last 12 games’!

That is why I would go for our most offensive attack on Wednesday. Monaco
tend to play 0-0 draws or 1-0 wins.

  35. Romford Ozil Pele

Monaco are definitey a tough nut to crack, only conceded one goal in the CL group stage too so you’d envisage them being a tough nut to crack.

  36. Thomas

“Mourinhio is simply trying to win refrees favours as he know his team doesnt have the quality to win the league this time around.”

Yet he leads the league five points clear of City with 12 games left? Dickhead.

” Chelsea opened the door for us in the title race”

    Lol what title race?

  37. Dan T

I see Chelsea are going the appeal the Matic red card – This is where Mourinho sees whether his whining has worked or whether he needs to step it up another notch.

  38. Gregg

36 points to play for of which 27 should be enough for 3rd place. Our results form is the best in the league at present albeit the performances aren’t matching the results.

  39. Danny

I’m sure the carpet headed Kroenke phoned Wenger last night coz he’s angry that we are 3rd. The target is 4th coz he wants the extra bread from the 2 qualifying matches, so our great leader promised the yank that we’ll draw the next 2 games…..

  40. Nasri's Mouth

Danny: I’m sure the carpet headed Kroenke phoned Wenger last night coz he’s angry that we are 3rd.

    I’m more sure he didn’t

  41. tunnygriffboy

If the fa rescind Matic red card they open a huge can of worms with every player being able to justify retaliatory action. Barnes should be punished retrospectively though.

It’s the hipocrisy that gets me though. The challenges by Ramires at Villa, Cahills on Alexis and Costas stamp on Can were all ignored by Mourinho who blamed someone else or diverted attention rather than admit they were bad challenges. Sadly too many managers do this.

  42. David Smith

Can only agree with the earlier posts, Mourinho really is a bore, as well as being a cheat, self serving hypocrite, and eye gouger to boot. One thing I would agree with out board, who would rightly never allow such a figure near this club, be their motives good, bad, indifferent, or tightwad

  43. Dan T

    Tunny – Agreed

They shouldn’t rescind the card. Although I fully understand the reaction, it is a red-card offence.

Barnes made a few heavy challenges in that game but the one on Matic was disgusting. As someone who has had a football broken leg, I hate seeing that, makes me feels sick. He needs a ban.

  44. Danny

    @Nasris Mouth
All they cares about is money – nothing is gained by coming 2nd or 3rd, only 4th is financially worth it.

  45. Romford Ozil Pele

Key on Wednesday is wrestling control of the midfield. Monaco’s is very strong in Toulalan-Knodogbia, with Moutinho just infront. Could see Rosicky starting this one. Toulalan has already been talking about nullfying Santi as he knows him from their time at Malaga. They may try press Santi high up. Intriguing battle.

  46. Romford Ozil Pele

“nothing is gained by coming 2nd or 3rd, only 4th is financially worth it.”

Lol surely you don’t believe this? You do know you earn more money the higher you finish? Lol the logic.

  47. Le Prof

    Danny

‘All they cares about is money – nothing is gained by coming 2nd or 3rd, only 4th is financially worth it.’

Thanks for proving you know absolutely fuck all.

  48. Dan T

    Romford

Actually if we broke away from the top 4 battle this year then we are likely to get a lot fewer games televised towards the end of the season as we wouldn’t really be playing for anything. So the additional place money would likely be outweighed by the additional TV money.

I obviously don’t believe we wouldn’t try and finish as high as possible though.

  49. @snoekrats

As long as we win vs Monaco I am happy. Even if they score.

Cant see us not scoring at their ground.

As for the team selection. Easy play our best 11 vs Monoaco and rotate vs Everton.

Wilshere OX rosicky etc should have enough to beat everton who on current form and at the emirates we should be beating all day long.

  50. Romford Ozil Pele

“More than the money earned in the 2 qualifying matches? I doubt it.”

If you really think Arsenal would forego 3rd so we can finish 4th, I don’t know what to say.

Dan – fair. Money can be made back through other means though. Plus, even if we aren’t playing for anything, other teams we play might be.

  51. OnlyCameToSeeEboue

Fair play to Romford for coming on here and giving Giroud the credit he’s due despite not being a big fan of the player. Hopefully others follow suit and put their personal agendas aside when it comes to our players.

On a side note, I think becuase we’re all arsenal fans and watch a lot of our own players we tend to be very polaristic in our views.

Theo comes to mind here. I have seen his defensive contributions being piloried here however, I dont claim to have any knowledge on this, but I doubt many wingers who post the type of goal scoring and assist figures Theo produces actually contribute very much defensively, baring our very own Sanchez. Correct me if im wrong, but i think most player we would sign to replicate Theos current numbers will come with the same defensive deficiencies.

  52. TOLI83

I am a bit worried about this game on Weds…

Very important we get going from the off, very tough team to break down.

No idea why people are suggesting we leave Giroud out, this game is made for him.

Be good to go over there with a two or 3 goal cushion, we have the capability to do this if we play to our potential. Keeping wise we should keep Ospina in, no need to change things really, Sczez is def more of a liability. Ospina should play to the end of the season then we really need to buy a new number 1.

  53. Goondawg

Seriously only at Arsenal, would we go scout a GK at the World Cup finals where so many excelled, and return with the most fragile one ever.

I swear he gets injured every game. Seriousy what the fuck? I used to think, he was just wasting time, letting our defences organise and slowing the tempo. Now I’m genuinely concerned. Fair enough, he is adapting to the league and all that, but did no one think to look at his small stature and think hang on a minute is this a good idea? We don’t need a good no.2 ffs

  54. Danny

At the start of every season Wenger looks at the fixture list and works out how’s the best way to finish 4th – even now all he talks about is the fact we’ve 2 more home games than the others. Of course I want us to finish as high up as possible but that’s not the Kroenke way.
Well see on 24th May at 17:00…..

Maybe it is a tactic to delay things, wouldn’t suprise me to be honest.

His record isn’t to bad and overall his stats are ok. Give him a bit more time, no need to go off the deep end yet on him!

  56. Dissenter

The English sporting media are complicit in Mourhino’s shenanigans.
The Italian sporting society saw through Mourning quickly, he was despised and not respected despite his success.
It was the same in Spain, he tried to tear up the fabric of the Spanish national team at the height of their supremacy and even Madrid players called him out. News stations used to cut off his press conferences when he went too far.

The British sporting tabloid have found a drama queen partner in Mourhino, for now. He won’t last long in Chelsea this tome because he’s made himself the story. Some defiant journalist is going to run a story about the reckless tackles that Chav players have made. Cahill’s feckless two footed tackle on Sanchez was far worse than the Magic tackle.

  57. Danny

    Nasri’s Mouth
Welcome to Arsenal 2015 owned by Kroenke.
Look at last season – at the new year we were top and want did Wenger do – he brought in Kallstrom coz he had no interest in winning the league only in getting 4th etc etc

  58. Dissenter

Ospina is always going to be unorthodox, which is a crime if you’re a purist.

You’re going to have to judge him by his results.
We played badly on Saturday, happy with the win though.

  59. gambon

“any other manager trying to excuse a naff performance in that way would just get laughed at.”

What like saying 6-3, 6-0 and 5-1 defeats are “accidents”?

  60. Romford Ozil Pele

Dissenter, Mourinho was ok at Inter He kept winning and that was the most important thing. He generally didn’t have much for Serie A as it wasn’t competitive at the time.

Agree on Madrid though. Madrid are synonymous with attacking football and the media hated the way Madrid lined up in big games. The fact he was Barca’s b*tch during Pep’s time there didn’t go down well either. Then in his last season he pretty much fell out with everyone.

The English media still have a hard-on for Jose generally speaking. Whether it lasts remains to be seen. Jose bores me personally but you can’t argue with the fact that he’s successful wherever he goes.

  61. Rhys Jaggar

4th vs 3rd – you have the ‘we know what the finances are like for 4th’ vs ‘just imagine what they might be like if we challenged for the title and the Champions League’….

If you finish 3rd or above, you can sign star players from June 1st as you know you have champions league assured. If you have a team which might challenge for the title then it’s a shoo in that you’ll get more Sky money through more games shown live – just look at Liverpool last season. You’ll ensure that all the boxes at the Emirates are sold out. You’ll also have increased your wages unless you clear the stables before unloading your new stallion(s) into the stable……

The key though is getting to the UCL semi-finals or finals. If you do that you get a shedload more money. Probably sell a shedload more shirts.

The final piece of the jigsaw is what performance-related payments you get from sponsors and what you can sign up new sponsors for down the track. If I’m a potential new sponsor I wanna take my best clients to the Champions League final, not to a UCL qualifying game in August, thank you very much.

So ultimately, the money can be about different things, but it depends what your money model is.

If your model is low risk, stable finances with known revenues and returns, you target 4th place and a cup win.

If your model is to become as big as Real Madrid by 2025, then you take some risks to win titles, Champions Leagues and to give your fans ‘the greatest days of their lives’……..

However, fans have to accept that the latter model comes with risks. Risks that big players don’t perform and disrupt the squad. Risks that you get drawn repeatedly against Real, Barca or Bayern in the last 16 of the Champions League. Risks that you come second, lose finals and don’t get the extra sponsorship money.

As I read things, a lot of Arsenal fans got bored with their safe, boring old wifey the past decade. They’d like a horny new mistress thank you very much. Quite a few would like their cake and eat it, needing the certainty of old wifey but sneaking off just occasionally for a hot fling playing away from home……..

  62. gambon

“If you really think Arsenal would forego 3rd so we can finish 4th, I don’t know what to say.”

    It would be nonsensical anyway

You earn £1m more for finishing 3rd.

You also get a bigger cut of the CL TV money (20% of the UK pot for 3rd vs 10% for 4th)

  63. Danny

If you finish 3rd or above, you can sign star players from June 1st

We siigned Sanchez, Podolski and others before we were thru the qualifying round.

  64. Dream10

Toulalan is suspended for the first leg. He has had a very good and underrated career. Read last week that he is linked with a return to Malaga.

  65. gambon

Instead Man Utd went for Moyes and went into freefall to 7th in the PL.

under Mourinho they would be top now more than likely.

  66. Romford Ozil Pele

“Did Mourinho flutter his eyelids at ManU, I cant remember?”

Nothing conclusive obviously but there are a lot of journalists/reporters who said Mourinho wanted Man United but settled for Chelsea when he realised he wasn’t gonna be appointed. Doesn’t reflect well on Mourinho – hugely successful manager but England’s biggest club doesn’t want you. What does that say? Generally just don’t think United would want to deal with Jose’s BS.

  67. Romford Ozil Pele

Think LVG will definitely go if United don’t get top 4, especially considering they spent £150m in the summer. Mad that they have so much money – but then that’s the reward when you’ve been as successful as they have over the past two decades.

  68. Nasri's Mouth

    @Danny

We make more money from finishing 3rd than 4th

    It makes signing players easier.

Financially it’s ‘safer’ (no risk of dropping out of the CL)

Kroenke would absolutely prefer us to finish 3rd than 4th

    or 2nd than 3rd

    or 1st than 2nd

  69. Romford Ozil Pele

I guess Mourinho’s lack of longevity at top clubs may have also gone against him but you know Man United just didn’t like his personality. And part me of thinks Pep will be their manager in 2016, providing they are in the CL of course.

  70. gambon

I kind of agree with UTDs idea of wanting to appoint a long term manager, but then again that has gone out the window with Van Gaal coming in.

Van Gaal is very good at putting in place structure and getting the youth system going etc, but he wont be there in 3 years.

They should have just gone for Mourinho if they were gonna revert to Van Gaal.

  71. MarbleHall

Mourinho bottled it when he faced Dortmund in the Champions league.
He blundered by naming his line up the night before the game and got duly spanked for his troubles.

  72. Leedsgunner

When have I done this… you clown?

Stop stirring s*** for no reason. Even if I did, last time I checked Chelsea is leading the league, and in a strong position in the Champion’s League. Plus we haven’t beaten him yet in the League have we? At least they have manager who addresses his team’s weaknesses before the season opens… how long did we know we needed a defender?

    *facepalm*

Having said that, Chelsea is an embarrassment of a club. Full to the brim of “plastic” fans who are happy to cheer their black players on the field but happy to to abuse them off it. Definition of unclassy. I hope any great player worth their salt tells Chelsea to go f*** off when they come calling in the summer transfer window.

  73. Nasri's Mouth

gambon: They should have just gone for Mourinho if they were gonna revert to Van Gaal.

Probably too late by that point.

  74. Dream10

    Romford

I’m with you on Guardiola joining Utd in 2016. Who can they hire for one a year or two as an in between till Pep arrives?

Don’t see Di Maria being at Old Trafford after June or England for that matter. A swap with PSG for Cavani or Marquinhos makes sense.

  75. Romford Ozil Pele

Dream – you think United will sell ADM? He’s the most expensive transfer in PL history. Hasn’t been great recently admittedly, but he’ll be given a chance to get it right. His talent isn’t in question. Problem with United this season is that they’ve used about 8 different formations, their best midfield IMO hardly every plays (Herrera), not sure LVG knows his best team, he has about 7 CBs but how many are that good? So many questions. Lol they probably still beat us in a couple weeks.

  76. Dan T

“You also get a bigger cut of the CL TV money (20% of the UK pot for 3rd vs 10% for 4th)”

I didn’t know that, thanks. Just read a bit about it. So that’s where the real money rewards are for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

There is less than £3 million difference between 1st and 4th in prize money from the EPL. But that makes a huge difference if 1st is getting 40% of Champions league tv money market pool compared to 10% for 4th.

  77. Nasri's Mouth

RP: And part me of thinks Pep will be their manager in 2016, providing they are in the CL of course.

Yeah, can absolutely see Guardiola wanting to go there. Much cleaner image than Mourinho.

I think after Moyes and LvG they’ll be desperate for someone like him even if he is only relatively short term

  78. MarbleHall

Mourinho has no acumen for football, he’s like the rogue doctor who’s been working in a hospital for 5 years only to be found out he has no qualifications for the post.

  79. Romford Ozil Pele

“Yeah, can absolutely see Guardiola wanting to go there. Much cleaner image than Mourinho.”

Pretty much. The only other top manager with similar stature is Ancelotti.

  80. Leedsgunner

Di Maria for Theo anyone if he starts playing silly games about his contract extension? (Obviously not for £59m, I would be surprised if he’s worth £20m now in his present form).

He was a fantastic player at Real Madrid — plus with the added advantage that Özil has worked with him before…

  81. Romford Ozil Pele

    “Di Maria”

Non-starter – no way United sell him. He’s their biggest ever signing and he has a five-year contract. Pointless talking about it, we have other priorities too.

  82. Lee

“Mourinhio is simply trying to win refrees favours as he know his team doesnt have the quality to win the league this time around.”Yet he leads the league five points clear of City with 12 games left? Dickhead.” Chelsea opened the door for us in the title race”Lol what title race?

    Thomas

Fuck off to kings road you bum licking Maureen rim job dilivering wiener……

  83. Nasri's Mouth

I’d have Di Maria, but not for the money that ManU would want for him.

And if they don’t get in the CL places they definitely wont want to sell him

  84. Carts

Potential banana peel averted, thank fuck for that!!!

Think Palace have enough to stay up; so important we won given other results.

3-7 is looking tight as shit – separated by only 4 points. I think Liverpool will nick a CL spot. I really do. Moreoever, if they were to win the Europa league then what are the implications?

Utd are so unconvincing. I really thought they’d push on a bit more but they just aren’t clinical enough.

  85. Cesc Appeal

As long as we don’t see any bizarre selection choices I think we will dismantle Monaco and Everton this week at home

  86. Dissenter

If Chelsea are stupid enough to appeal the Magic red card, the FA has to increase his ban to four games.
No one has a right to vigilante actions on the field.
That side, Matic should haven trampled on Barnes face after he shoved him down. Dirty low talent players disgust me like Barnes disgust me.

First you claim that nobody has the right to vigilante actions on the field.
Then urge matic to stamp on Barnes’ face……

  88. Dream10

Not a big fan of Liverpool making the CL. They will have another 50-60m to spend and they will buy top caliber players. They have been linked with Pjanic and Lacazette. Don’t want them to have the opportunity to spend to buy quality. In the case of Man Utd, it’s almost guaranteed they will spend in excess of 100m whether they finish 3rd or 5th.

  89. Carts

I’d actually be surprised if his appeal is rejected.

I’m sick and tired of football being policed like a game of fucking netball. Matic deserved a yellow card at max. Down to me, I would’ve probably given him a stern warning. Red card my ass.

  90. Nasri's Mouth

    @Dissenter

If Matic’s red card is rescinded it’ll cause all sorts of issues, but for me, the biggest issue is making sure Barnes get some punishment

  91. Dissenter

One club I now that won’t stand Mourhino’s nonsense is Bayern.
The Munich boardroom is filled with large football personalities who know lot about the game because they played at the highest level.
Mourhino won’t last 6 weeks in Bayern.

  92. Willow Wilson

Forget Mourinho, the bloke has never had any class. Unlike the English media, the Spanish saw him for what he was and didn’t like it one bit. We celebrate idiots like him and that awful club he manages.

The issue here is the media pandering to Mourinho.

Matic was not injured. He was able to run like a madman to get retribution.

Ramsey and Eduardo left the pitch on stretchers. So too Diaby. All put into hospital by British players. Good old British players getting stuck in. We really are a Country of dinosaurs following Jurasic park football.

Instead of Arsenal players receiving the type of defence Matic is receiving from the media, the outpouring of sympathy was for those that made those disgraceful tackles. Shawcroos and Taylor. How they weren’t ‘that type of player’. Hogwash.

We can all remember the sympathy Ryan Shawcross received, at times it was nauseating. Something about his Mum having to give him a lift home. Nothing about the fact that Ramsey or Eduardo were going to be relying on lifts for a very long time or the months of rehabilitation needed.

In addition, I have not read one article about the two Cahill tackles. The over the top leg breaker against Hull City and the one that nearly sliced Alexis in half.

Proof that as far as the media are concerned we are fair game. Mourinho will threaten to boycott press conferences like Fergie did and the media will panic. They need him.

As Pedro says, the pressure on the referees in future games is now immense, this is going to be worth points and just like Fergie, don’t be expected to see additional minutes if they are losing and a lot of very dubious decisions. Plain wrong.

  93. Dissenter

    Lee,
No one has a right to vigilante actions without facing punishment, hence his red card which should not be rescinded. That’s the context of my comment.
Since Magic was going to shove him and miss his first cup final, why not finish the act with a Patrick Vieira act.

I recall we (AFC) supported Van Persia after he stomped Adebayor in that infamous game at Man City. Adebayor double tackled his former team mate, Van Persia. Van Persie made sure that Adebayor got his just deserts on his way down. We all backed RVP at the time, the club even posted RVP’s condemnation of that tackle on the website.

Tryw to catch up. I wonder why people hold grudges on this site. You got beat yesterday but today is a brand new day.

Absolutely. It’s pathetic and for people to lap it up every time, whatever they print this propaganda for the masses.

I’d like to think people were more intelligent than to believe everything they read and to use their own eyes to form an opinion but the unfortunately for a lot people, they’re no.

  95. Romford Ozil Pele

Messi unproven at the highest level.
What did he score at the World Cup 3 goals and he is supposed to be a goal machine. Do me a favour

Wouldn’t play him in the under 9s

  97. Emiratesstroller

    Gregg

I must agree with your assessment.

Frankly on this occasion I sympathise with Chelsea and Matic. That is of course a rare occurrence.

The Burnley tackle was outrageous and the failure of the referee to deal with
it was diabolical. He cannot have failed to see it. I think that most players in the situation of Matic would have reacted particularly when the referee had
made some appalling decisions throughout this game.

Matic will not be able to overturn the decision. The only question is whether
the burnley player will get a suspension for the tackle. If Referee saw it then
    unlikely.

What I do know is that the referee should be demoted and not allowed to referee again EPL games.

Mourinho is a prick, no doubt, but he remains right about Wenger: Arsenal should be in contention, and Wenger has long been free to under-achieve.

That Arsenal have only been in contention once (maybe) in the past nine or so years is a clear indictment of Wenger’s ineptitude. No question. While he has had to work within certain limitations, he has always had the resources to compete for EPL titles. That he has proved incapable of this is the problem.

The whole world has known for some time now that we need at least one quality CDM and a CF, yet Wenger signed neither this summer, relying instead on Flameta and Giroud, players with whom Arsenal will never win anything of note.

Wenger remains the problem. Year after year, Arsenal aren’t quite good enough, are always two to three players short. Contrary to what his apologists say, this is down not to limited resources but to the decisions he makes with those resources.

    Wenger out.

    Nauru’s mouth,
I wrote about the Barnes tackle on Saturday and was jumped on by many for being a closet Chav.
When you let tackles like that go unpunished, then you’re setting up finesse players like Hazard, Silva or Carzola for leg breaks.
Mourhino is a typical narrow vision manager because he defended Cahill’s two footed lunge on Sanchez at the time, so I have no sympathy for him.

  101. Le Prof

    ROP

    Beat me to it.

I remember thinking after that game, he scores, he runs the length of the pitch to rub us up, then leaves RVP with a cut eye and at the time totally getting away with it. He was a disgrace that game.

Think he may of been done retrospectively if memory serves.

I agree with all that. There is no ‘conspiracy’ against Chelsea because just as Barnes wasn’t punished, neither was Cahill.

The fault is that both should have been. Either on the pitch or retrospectively

  105. Bamford10

I am aware, btw, that Wenger signed Welbeck this summer, but (i) he did so only because Giroud picked up an injury and (ii) Welbeck is no better a CF than Giroud, sadly (though he does have more athleticism/talent).

  106. Romford Ozil Pele

“Think he may of been done retrospectively if memory serves.”

Yeah he got a three-game ban. Such an idiot, albeit a talented one. Waste of a career.

  107. OnlyCameToSeeEboue

Bamford10, your blood must boil everytime Giroud scores, which is quite frequently these days.

Let him be man, he’s handling business. Be humble.

  108. gazzap

Ospina is better than Szcz. At this moment in time that is all that matters. we cannot buy another keeper until the summer so we go with Ospina until then at least.
Szcz makes terrible decisions about when to come or stay and he panics his defenders. You can tell Ospina makes his defenders calm, and they can predict what he will do far better than Szcz who can make some very rash decisions. Ospina’s handling is also very good. If the ball goes near him, it tends to stick. His weakness is probably his height.
For me Szcz isn’t even PL standard and was never as good as Fabianski. But the latter had shoulder problems and never got a good run in the team at the right time. If he had, I think he’d be our number 1 right now.

  109. Gregg

    Bamford

Spot on, every season we a couple of players short and it’s gone on too long now. The money is there, that can no longer be a legitimate excuse. We know we need a dominant midfield player but so do Liverpool and Man U. Also Man City never let a summer go by without adding at least one DM to their ranks aswell. We will find ourselves in an auction situation with the best players having the pick of those clubs.
