Arsenal transfer history is threatening to repeat itself and I’m scared

by .

Happy good morning to you!

I’m busy. Work. Stuff. I’ll be in St.Louis tomorrow, then New York at the weekend. I’m really worried people on Twitter will start calling me a fake fan because I’m calling football > soccer just to blend in. Hopefully my half and half scarf will ease the pressure.

Anyway, enough about me. What about football?

Hey, ever have a really messed up dejavu type moment. You know, you’re all like… imagine having a crisis in the holding role, then you find an ‘internal solution’, then that internal solution starts playing well, then you find out they have 6 months to go on their deal, then Milan come in and take that player away.

So the story is Coquelin has 6 months to go, he can talk to foreign clubs now. Can you imagine?

Likely that won’t happen, but it’s interesting that, even in football, history has a way of threatening to repeat itself. I’d prefer it if we just gave everyone a really well paid long term contract. That way we’d be safe. All the time. I like being safe.

So what else is going on? I read an really amusing article from the Telegraph this morning. It should basically have said, ‘we’ve taken all Metro’s transfer stories so we can drive cheap traffic’.

So I didn’t get much from that…

We’re probably not going hard for players now. We’ve won a big game. Wenger has cracked it. We don’t need players.

This is a bad way of thinking. It’s knee jerk calmness. One result always changes opinion. Thing is, once that window closes, that’s it until the end of the season. It’s great to have players back in the frame, but look, there are still big gaps. We have very limited options at the back. We still  need some support in midfield. The squad didn’t just suddenly become great.

But hey, even I’m calm about it now… I am a victim of knee jerk calmness. Imagine that. Relaxed like a well sexed stud pig.

Ozil is back. He’s bulked. But does he have a place? Santi is owning that number ten role. We have very talented wide players who have staked a claim. Good position to be in. We can rotate him in when we play weaker teams. Santi needs rest. He’s been played and played. We need him fresh for the run in.

Right, super small post today because I am literally doing the best I can to connect consumers and brands in a credible and immersive way with story telling at the heart.

What has this got to do with anything?, everything, why stumble over your dick in January when Wenger had 3 months to sort this out, I thought that was obvious, obviously not

  2. gambon

Why are you living in the past?

We messed up in the summer? So whats the very best possible solution?

Clearly the best solution is to sort it out in January.

With you its like mental anger just for the sake of it.

Whats your solution? Either invent a time machine and go back to summer 2014, or if we cant invent one we just never ever sign another CB and keep punishing ourselves?

  3. Highbury Daze

ok debate all you want among yourselves on the Paulista hoax, I’m done with it, you know my theory on it, subject closed

  4. gambon

    I dont care about Wenger.

I care about the fact that Debuchy and Monreal have played CB this year, and that Chambers has played way too many games at CB for someone with such little experience.

  5. Highbury Daze

I don’t give two fucks if no CB comes in January, because I believe none will, I await to be stand corrected

  6. Highbury Daze

I welcome additions in January, but until they arrive I don’t jerk off over possible arrivals of players who can’t get work permits, now I know you are all hyped up and are ejaculating over Paulista imminent arrival but I am calmer than most of you who are hyper fucking ventilating over some bum

  7. Dream10

Chambers won’t get a loan for the last half of the season, but he desperately needs one next year. Needs to start 25-30 matches in 2015-16

  8. Dan T

I don’t really know anything about Paulista. Others seem to rate him fairly highly. Has anybody watched him much?

Would seem a sensible signing if it happens from what others have said about him. With Per getting on and Koscielney probably in his last 4 years then it would make sense for him to learn from those two for the future. Would give us a decent option for rotation/cover in the short term too.

Not counting my chickens just yet, but if we’re going to make a serious signing in this window then this looks to be the one.

  9. alexanderhenry

Your articles on transfers are my favourites Pedro, Taking into account your knack of getting it completely wrong on which players arsenal are about to sign , I’ll expect arsenal to sign paulista with his work permit in place this month.

  10. Highbury Daze

Now let me see, Wenger fucked up the summer transfer window, he had 3 months to get it right, he sells Vermaelen lets Miquel go two CB refuses to by another, and gambon thinks Wenger will make it all better in 1 month in January, excuse me if I think that is a crock of shit

  11. Highbury Daze

If this reptile does sign a defender, it will be because he feels the heat from Saints Spurs and Liverpool on his neck, it is going to be keenly contested 4th place this year, and that is the only reason he might, because he thought 6 defenders were enough in August, why would he change his mind, why, well because he never saw Southampton Spurs and Liverpool coming, this grub is under the pump big time

  12. Romford Ozil Pele

There’s no guarantee either Kos/Per will start. Obviously they’re an established partnership but it could be improved. For the money Paulista will cost, his age. He ain’t coming in to sit on the bench. Could conceivably be a starter.

  13. Emiratesstroller

If you take a look at recent stats of Brazillian National team most of the defenders in their current national squad are playing with high profile fashionable clubs in Europe.

Paulista is at moment playing for an unfashionable club in Spain who are not
currently in Champions League. History has shown that once Brazillians play
for top club teams they land up generally winning caps for Brazil.

If my memory serves me correctly Gilberto did not have an international cap
when he arrived at Arsenal and was no spring chicken either. Yet within a relatively short time he became an international regular and even captained

  14. Romford Ozil Pele

“If my memory serves me correctly Gilberto did not have an international cap
    when he arrived at Arsenal”

Incorrect. He was a World Cup winner.

  15. Dream10

Gilberto was a world champion when he joined.

But I agree with your point. Brazil have depth at CB. Gabriel’s seems to be a promising talent who will look to take the next step.

Only thing now is we will likely have a 16m novice Chambers as our fourth choice. The lad needs a loan to Newcastle or Everton next season to develop.
It will also give the club a chance to move him on if he is not good enough.
Still perplexed by his signing tbh

  16. Emiratesstroller

    Romford Ozil Pele

You are correct. However, there were serious problems with not only his
Brazilian Club but also obtaining work permit.

He may have played for Brazil, but he was not at that time a regular in their team and had almost certainly not met the criteria for number of international games played.

  17. Romford Ozil Pele

“Wenger actually sounds like he might be bringing in someone else in addition to paulista.”

I’d be hugely surprised if the player is established though. Probs another Bielik-type signing.

  18. Wallace

nah, i think Chambers is going to be a quality CB. if we do sign Paulista – fingers crossed – can easily see Mertesacker slipping down to 4th choice by the time next season starts.

  19. Highbury Daze

And if you thought a CB was a priority, what the fuck is this relic doing buying a 17 year old kid, yea that’s gonna help this campaign , would you think a CB would be brought in FIRST if Le imbecile thought it was important, to him it is not, he is in no rush, checks my watch, why it’s only the 22nd, what am I worried about Wenger’s got aeons to buy his CB, Phew, I thought it was January the 30, from memory that’s when he does his best work January 31st, 11.45 pm, what a ball sac

  20. Leedsgunner

So let me get this straight…

    1. the FA acts as a proxy for the home office in relation to work permits,

    2. they issue work permits now based on the purchase price of the player, and the said player.

    3. a player of exceptional talent is deemed over £10m is he?

I would have LOVED to see the grimace on Wenger’s face as they registered…

Tight git. It must have killed him!!!

  21. Le Prof

You may be getting confused with Edu.

He had all the problems you mentioned.

Gilberto was very much a 1st team regular and the only Brazilian player to play every minute of that WC wining run in 2002.

  22. gazzap

If we are to bring someone else in , I want it to be another DM. Bielik is for the future. Le Coq plus another for DM, Flam and Arteta can both do one as far as I’m concerned. If not a DM then maybe a left back.

  23. NYCgooner

Looking long term I do think he will being in another striker in the summer after shipping out bambi, podolski and likely campbell. My personal favorite is cavani but his wages are in the stratosphere so that’s not gonna happen. I am really impressed by dybala the couple times i’ve seen him but i think Icardi suits our style a little better. Both south americans by the way which seems to now be a prerequisite to play striker for wenger.

  24. Highbury Daze

Good for you Arsene, this is a choice nugget from him : we are working hard to sign players, we are working day and night, if we find the right player we will let you know, you just can’t go to the supermarket and pick a defender off the shelf, well it seemed to work for him a few years back when he did a trolley dash for Per Arteta Santos

You see this guy says that much shit he forgets what he says and ends up contradicting himself well he is a pensioner of 66 what the fuck do you expect

  25. Leedsgunner

If we are going to bringing in another player in addition to Paulista (if it happens) I think it has to be another CB. Although another proven DM would be nice as well.

  26. Emiratesstroller

    Dream 10

Chambers is 19 years old and should not have been playing as regularly as he was for first team.

He was brought in as a right back bearing in mind that was the position he played at Southampton and also for England and frankly Bellerin is a better prospect in that position.

The only reason that he has been considered for CB position is that we have
at moment no third or fourth string CBs with experience in that position. On
the evidence of what I saw when he played there he is probably no better than
U21 level if you want to play him in that position so that he is no better than
    a fourth string option.

  27. gazzap

Paulista coming would put a question mark over either Mertesacker or Chambers I think. People say Mert is old, but 30 for a player like him is not that old. He’s never relied on pace. He could still have 4 years left in him.
Chambers has not really shone. He had that initial few good games where he was running on adrenaline but he plateaued off big time in my view. not a £16m player.

  28. Romford Ozil Pele

NYC – Striker possibly though for what Cavani will cost in wages and considering his age, I very much doubt it. As has been said, there are actually no WC strikers on the market. You either stump up for one of the up and coming ones (Dybala/Vietto) or look for internal solutions.

Leeds – I doubt we’ll bring in another CB in addition to Paulista (if it happens). It’ll be Kos/Per/Paulista/Chambers.

  29. Bamford10

We don’t need 4 CBs, esp. when Chambers and Monreal can cover there. Were we to sign Paulista, we’d have three solid CBs, plus backups. Contrast that to CDM, where we have three average to inadequate players.

There is simply no question that our principal need after CB is CDM.

Not to mention that where a class CB could solidify us, a class CDM could TRANSFORM us.

  30. Romford Ozil Pele

Wenger never bought Chambers for RB. He bought Chambers for his versatilility (RB/DM/CB). Chambers broke into the Saints team at RB but he spent most of his youth career at CB so it’s not an alien position to him. Chambers played 22 games in the PL for Southampton and more than held his own so i’m not sure where peoples’ opinions re coming from.

Dude just turned 20 this week, people need to relax. Knee-jerk reactions and all sorts. He’ll be fine at CB.

  31. NYCgooner

Not really fair when you consider that chambers was playing at rb in those games. His natural position seems to be at cb.

  32. Emiratesstroller

    Le Prof

There was no problem with Edu because he had Italian ancestry and passport.

The problem was with Gilberto. There was a contractural dispute with his Brazillian club and whilst he did play for Brazil he had not met the criteria of playing 75% games in their national team. It took time to get Home Office Clearance.

However, the main point I was making was that he was no spring chicken when he became a professional footballer. My recollection when he joined club was that he had worked in sweet factory and came late into game. He was
also 24 + when he came to Europe.

  33. Romford Ozil Pele

    on Serge Gnabry…
Gnabry is back in full training but he needs games in the under-21s because he’s been out for a very long time. He looks quite promising again physically, and fitness-wise he is okay.

  34. Leedsgunner

Fair enough. Let’s hope this Paulista deal goes through then. Which CDM could we realistically get this window? Schneiderlin I think is out of the question. I heard Man United might do a Nani plus cash for Carvalho. I would love Saul Niguez of A. Madrid because I think the lad is going to be huge star, and young. Whether A. Madrid would sell to us I’m not sure about. If it woas up to me I would be tempted to offer A. Madrid a player swap with J. Campbell…?

Another player I thought of was James Ward Prowse… having a break out year this year — versatile in that he can play CM, DM and LM and RM. I think he’s taken over Lallana’s mantle at Southampton this year. A potential goer?

  35. Wallace

apparently we’ve offered 10m in two instalments for Paulista. might need to go a bit higher, although they’re supposedly interested in Joel Campbell.

Campbell to be sold now Gnabry’s close?

  36. Carts

So a chinese billionaire has bought a 20% stake in A.Madrid for £34m, I’m guessing that theoretically values A.Madrid at £170m. But they still have debts of e500m circa.

Makes you wonder who actually benefit from this deal. I suppose the commercial benefit is further exposure in China as well as pre-seaon friendlies out there.

  37. Carts

Wallace – Hmm, sure sounds like an Arsenal way of bidding. I guess letting Campbell leave – with a modest valuation of between £5m-£10m – as p/x for Paulista makes most sense.

Think we should cut ties with Campbell now and be done with it.

  38. Romford Ozil Pele

Leeds – I’d be surprised if we went big on a DM this window, think the business is closed after Paulista (if it happens).

RE Ward-Prowse, I like him but isn’t he more attacking than defensive. We need more physical guys like Schneiderlin and Wanyama. I think it’s all moot now as it’s gonna be virtually impossible to sign any Southampton player this window.

Wallace – who knows really. I can’t see Gnabry playing much this season either unless we suffer another injury crisis. Campbell could go if there’s a decent enough offer. A few clubs are really interested in him.

  39. Tizteezy

I think if any other additions are to be made apart from Pauliboy, it’ll be a foward/winger. Wenger letting Poldi, Sanocks, Afobe and probably Joel all go? I think he has an eye for an attacking talent esp. at left wing foward. Besides he doesnt seem to really fancy Welbz. Remember the circumstances surrounding Welbz’ transfer?

  40. Marko

You’d be confident now the Gabriel move is a go. Very rare you get anything out of Wenger on transfers let alone him saying he’s confident of a deal. Also given he’s said he’s still open to another player coming in maybe there’s truth to those Destro, Mario Suarez or William Carvalho rumours earlier in the window

  41. Carts

Anyone catch a glimpse of Monaco last night?

No exagerration – there was more people in my local Tesco Metro than in their stadium. Honestly, for some of their players, it must feel like Sunday League ffs

  42. WengerEagle

Dybala, Vietto and Alcacer too Carts would all be good options.

Dybala would be pricey as fuck though I’d imagine given how well he’s doing in Serie A right now.

  43. WengerEagle

‘No exagerration – there was more people in my local Tesco Metro than in their stadium. Honestly, for some of their players, it must feel like Sunday League ffs’

I’m amazed that Moutinho is still there and he’s in the prime of his career. He would start for literally any BPL side barring Chelsea.

Heard that their LB is a talent but a bit mental.

  44. Le Prof

‘There was no problem with Edu because he had Italian ancestry and passport.’

There most certainly was a problem with Edu. He was signed in summer 2000 but he was in possession of a fake Portuguese passport so this delayed the signing until Jan 2001.

And Chambers has always been a CB and will continue to be developed as a CB. As previously mentioned its was due to his versatility he played RB for Southampton.

Chambers is a future Arsenal and England captain.

  45. ADKB

Where’s Daze?:-) He’s been on fire today!!! Similar thoughts from me.

I’ll seriously take any rumours about us signing anyone from 11pm on Jan 31st.

  46. Romford Ozil Pele

Yeah I can vouch for that. I love Roma but Destro really isn’t anything to write home about. The players Eagle has mentioned are much better, Vietto being my favourite.

  47. Nasri's Mouth

Wenger quite dismissive about Bielik’s readiness. We’ll see very little of him this season if at all.

Also strongly said he sees him as a DM not a CB

  48. Carts

    Eagle –

Dybala, Vietto and Alcacer: Yup forgot to metion those guys, they too are hot shit! If we include Lacazette and Icardi, it’s probably fair to say that Icardi and Dybala will cost the highest with Alcacer and Lacazette being more modest. Im guesing Vieto has a contract release clause of £30m and 2g of Jupiter dust.

  49. Nasri's Mouth

Wenger looked like someone had put chilli powder up his arse when Gabriel was mentioned.

The reporter came straight out with it, and you could almost see Wenger’s thought process as he realised he couldn’t do his normal vague response, ‘yes, we are looking’ etc.etc.

He really doesn’t like talking about transfers

  50. Carts

Yeah Monaco are hot right now. I really like the look of Carraso, Ocampos, Joao and Layvin; even Bernado Silva looks good. But yeah, we should really be beating them regardless.

  51. Nasri's Mouth

If Kos does short out his achilles over the summer, then we’ve got a very strong set of defenders next season. Going to be a bit of a challenge keeping them all happy, but that’s why Wenger is paid a load of cash

  52. Carts

“Paulista has 66 interceptions this season in La Liga. Tied for 2nd most”

Impressive. I’m sure john Terry/Cahill would rank quite high somewhere up there in the interceptions dept
