Lukas makes a case | Squad makes a case at perfect time

Ahhhh man, so little to talk about this morning. Tings went good yah hear me?

We rotated heavily. We took the lead early. We made half time subs. We scored more goals.

That game was a bit like the Hull one last year. Forced change results in excellent result. I hope Wenger sees that he can trust players to come in and do a good job.

Whilst I see the limitations of Lukas compared to Alexis, he’s more than capable in front of goal and he offers fight and know how. He absolutely rasped his first strike into the near post… a total thunderbolt!

Aaron Ramsey, who drove the game with the Ox scored the second when he had no other option. The ball crept in at the back post perfectly.

The third goal was just pure outrage. The ball was cleared from a corner, it flew about 33 yards out, bounced where Ramsey was on hand to power it into the top corner. One of the most powerful strikes Paul Merson can remember seeing.

Coasting at half time we brought on Zelalem and Niles. We played the rest of the game out in a cautious and calm way. It was easy street. Fun times. 3 points that qualified us for the 15th time. A great achievement when you consider Liverpool and City will likely drop out.

Conclusion

Rotation, rest and trusting your squad works. Ok, so Gala weren’t the best, but they’re still a Champions League club that we tanked. We need to bring the squad into play more often. As if by magic, Jose has been talking up his policy…

“Terry, Willian and Hazard are on holidays. I’d like to give the whole squad time off because they’re always playing, but I have good alternatives for these positions’

“You know, we have too many matches to play in December. We are one of the few teams in the Premier League who also play in the Capital One Cup at this moment.

“So everybody has periods to rest, which we don’t have. This game gives me the chance to rest these three players. We have already the fifth yellow card to Diego Costa which gave him a rest, and to Matic which gave him one. Now Fabregas has one, which gives him a rest.

Jose, bro, you forgot to talk about the periods of rest your players get when you don’t let them go on international break… so much down time!

Anyway, point is, Arsenal don’t really utilise down time in the same way, hence the problems we have (combined with a host of other issues). I think the theory is pretty simple, the more rested your players are, the fresher they’ll be, the more energy they can give.

I mean, I know a lot more goes into it than that… but once you hit peak fitness, a few days off here and there isn’t going to destroy you… you know, if you avoid the cocaine, hookers and 24 hour drinking binges.

Ramsey looked back to his best last night. He drove the game, stood up and made himself count and his finishing was electric. More of that please Aaron. If we can get his goals from last year back and the sharp passing and power he offered, we’ll have a much more comfortable run in.

I said that Lukas should have started against Stoke to sneers from a lot of people. Well, I think he showed last night that he has a purpose and sneering at utilising your squad isn’t smart. If he’s not good enough, the smart thing would have been to flog him and bring in someone we can rotate in. He scored a spectacular near post first goal and his second one was a well timed run with a cool finish. Against Chelsea, maybe he’s not the man, against Hull or QPR, you should be bringing him into the fold because he’ll do a good job.

Joel Campbell didn’t pull up any trees, but again, I don’t see why we don’t’ give him game time. He’s hardly a rooky and we’ve seen what he can do at all levels. There’s talent there and there’s certainly more to his game than there is to Sanogo’s…

Big games are coming up. I think we can take maximum points from them all if we use our squad properly. Now Wenger has a win under his belt, the panic will subside and he’ll be calmer about his selections I think. The key to December is your squad, how you manage it and how you utilise the best approach for each game. If we have a good December, bring some of our best players back,  buy well in January… we’ll be on a run.

Arsene is talking about it being hard to buy in January, make no mistake, he’s bullshitting you this time. We’re looking at loads of player and we’re in talks with clubs NOW. So don’t have a panic that he’s dithering already. The only fear I’d have is if we’re smashing it by the end of the month, he’s that up and down with transfers he might decide he doesn’t need to deal in January… fingers crossed he’s strong armed into not changing his mind.

RIGHT. That’s me done. Have a marvellous day.

The thing that get’s highlighted for me, week in and week out, is how poor our CFs are. It’s always the wingers or the midfield getting our goals and very few times is it the central man.

  2. Romford Pele

Lol the best thing about that Rambo goal is Sanogo’s reaction! I’m sure of watched it about 100 times now, cracks me up everytime. It’s cos he knows he doesn’t have the technique to pull that off. Absurb from Aaron to be frank. More of the same from him please. 2 goals and 1 assist in 45 mins.

  3. Romford Pele

AR doesn’t seem to have a cruise control mode though. He tends to go from average to God mode. But then you see what he can produce once he’s in full flow.

  4. Adam A. Carbarundum

Gala are a brutal team and still managed 55% possession. Wenger laments what could have been yet again as HIS defenders let him down earlier. He will have plenty of time to rue his blunderous tactics when they once again get handed their breakfast to them by one of the elites, to which Arsenal are not.

I feel more for Liverpool as they are an outright disaster right now. Losing Suarez has had a very predictable outcome for them. Equally I admire that both Gerrard and Rodgers were man enough to admit they are not good enough. Geez, at least Rodgers is man enough to accept blame for failures, unlike Wenger who has a thousand excuses at the ready for his failures.

  5. Romford Pele

Personally didn’t learn anything new that I have seen from Poldi before. Put him infront of goal and 9/10 he finishes. Problem is he’s barely involved in attacks and he won’t always get space and when that is taken away from him, you aren’t left with mum. Saw a stat yesterday that said in terms of chances created, fouls drawn, he’s very far behind Alexis, Welbz and L’Oreal. Efficient finisher, yes, but you can see why he isn’t a starter. Apart from his second goal last night, he barely touched the ball in the 2H.

  6. Leedsgunner

Don’t get too excited. To be balanced we have to say if Stoke was just “bad luck” last night was just “good luck”.

It’s disingenuous of Wenger to hoard all the credit when goes right but deflect on to “bad luck” or “accidents” when it goes wrong.

  7. Dan T

I just wish we had gone for the 3rd against Dortmund. They were there for the taking and we would have topped the group if we had.

  8. Dan T

    Leeds

I don’t recall anybody saying the Stoke game was bad luck. I think everyone slated Wenger for it didn’t they?

  9. Romford Pele

“I just wish we had gone for the 3rd against Dortmund. They were there for the taking and we would have topped the group if we had.”

It was more the dropped points against Anderlecht that killed us, mate.

Hello. First time poster here. My name is Lukas, I’m a bit of a cheeky chappie and quite popular with Arsenal fans. I am the life and soul of the party and very good for team morale

I have avery good left foot and tend to take my chances. My goals to game/minutes on the pitch is very very good. The problem is I very rarely make my own chances and have to rely on others to make them for me. I am also a very good crosser of the ball and can deliver them with bend and pace. Again I have to rely on people giving me the ball in space as I struggle to beat my man and go past him.

Sometimes I look to press the opposition and also track back to help the left back and stop crosses going in. I can’t do this all the time though as my legs hurt,I get out of puff and get a stitch

I don’t think I am up to playing against Man City or CChelsea as those games are too fast and intense for me and I get scolded if I fail to help my full back. However when we play West Brom and Sunderland when they put 10 men behind the ball particularly at the Emirates we tend to get loads of possession and less defending to do. My ability to take chances may help us break these sides down. I’d also be a good sub to bring on with 15/20 minutes to go if we need a goal

I must go and see Mr Wenger and promise him I will try harder to do my defensive responsibility. If I could get one start in three games and a few substitute appearances I would be happy

  11. Romford Pele

Actually so annoyed Chuba Akpom didn’t get on last night. SO much space for him to exploit. And Yaya was back to tripping over his own feet last night. #facepalm

  12. bnsb

I feel more for Liverpool as they are an outright disaster right now.

Anyone know what they smoke at Liverpool nowadays?

  13. Romford Pele

Why would anybody fee for Liverpool?! They spent the best part of a £100m. People tried to use Balotelli as some sort of scapegoat for all their problems, but it goes much deeper than that. In a game Rodgers needed to win last night he left Coutinho and Lallana on the bench. #facepalm

  14. Romford Pele

“I would argue our CB Kos is the critical miss”

Yeah he is, but Debuchy’s absence meant we couldn’t play Chambers CB as much as we’d have liked. One of the things with Debuchy is that he’s very good in the air (like Sagna) but much better going forward.

  15. Romford Pele

“Sounds like a team we should roll over quite easily.”

They’re no chumps. Moutinho and Kondogbia especially are great players.

  16. Dan T

“It was more the dropped points against Anderlecht that killed us, mate.”

Yeh, if you look at the group stage as a whole then this would be the game you looked at. But we knew the situation against Dortmund. We knew with a 3rd goal we would go through if they drew last night (which was always likely given their form). It just didn’t make sense to me. If we went for it and ended up drawing that one it would have been fine – so there wasn’t a lot of value in the 2-0, far better to have gone for it and then we couldn’t have drawn Bayern like we will now.

  17. Gilo

In over 30 years I’ve not seen a worse player than Sanogo pull on the shirt. Its absolutely inconceivable that he gets game time for Arsenal. His gormelss face is the defining image of the decline of the wenger years

  18. relieable sauce

    RP

1 goal conceeded suggests they are solid, we can still trouble any defence on our day. I’ve not seen them play at all though.
    Their goalscoring form is Stoke-esque…doh : /

  19. Biggles

Romford, you’ve just perfectly made the case for why Podolski should be played through the middle, instead of out on the wing. He’s far more clinical than anybody else we have and he’s got a good burst of pace to run between defenders. He’d get far more goals than Giroud would playing as centre forward and nobody would be complaining about him not tracking back. If we actually played Ozil as a number 10, they’d score loads together.

  20. Romford Pele

RS – Yeah they aren’t really a free-scoring side though they don’t give a lot away and are quite solid in midfield. Would be interesting if we got them given Wenger’s massive Monaco history. But yeah, them or Porto are our best chances of getting through to the QF’s, though I don’t particularly rate PSG tbh.

  21. Leedsgunner

Makes me think, if Sanogo is this bad and he’ll allowed on the field how much do you think Wenger despised Park to completely sideline him.

I cannot believe he was as bad as Sanogo because his international record was very god before he came to Arsenal. Wenger completely ruined him.

  22. Leedsgunner

“Providing we don’t get anymore injuries (LOL), we should have everyone back in Feb bar Wilshere, right?”

Yeah, good luck with that. Are you including Diaby? 😉

  23. tunnygriffboy

    Romford

I was saying to my son last night that the 2nd half would be great for Akpom as he’s yards quicker than Sanogo and could run in behind as the played a high line 2nd half. Problem was Debuchy was never going to play a full game and then when Ramsey and Flamini picked up knocks that made getting him on difficult.

What news on return of Arteta and Nacho ? Liked Ox and Ramsey in midfield. Ramsey’s engine and Ox’s power to dribble and draw players to him. Can beat a man on both sides as well. Imagine Matic behind those two *** sigh ***

  24. Ashwin Gunner

    Morning all

Yaya Sanogo is a younger version of Giroud. both have same qualities. both are good physically. both are not good with dribbling. both often fall down with the ball.

    N5

Congrats on your top 4 trophy. you deserve it mate 😀

  25. Romford Pele

Biggles, the Poldi as a CF has been discussed and experimented with before, and he’s minging there. Poldi can’t play with his back to goal. He also really isn’t good at running in behind. He had his chance there and it was unsuccessful. He’s spent most of his career as a wide forward, supporting striker. Lone forward he isn’t.

  26. Emiratesstroller

I have just written on last thread, but I will repeat what I said there.

At the moment we have a disproportionately large squad when compared with
Chelsea and Real Madrid. This is in part due to young players who are included but are realistically members of U21 squad. Also other clubs tend to loan out more players than we do.

Part of the problem at Arsenal is not so much that our players are overplayed,
but rather we have on books far too many players who are injury prone, past
their best, not good enough or simply too many players triplicating or worse
in certain positions and not enough cover in others.

My view is that you need three decent goalkeepers plus 18-20 outfield players
who are good enough to play regularly in first team without diminishing
performance and also covering adequately all positions.

Also we need to change our style of play. There needs to be better focus on
defence as has not been case over many years and more direct and efficient
football. Our game has been far too intricate and that has led too often to
    many of the injuries.

At the end of the season there needs to be a review of all personnel to see who
is fit for purpose. We should follow the policies of Chelsea [Mourinho] and
Man Utd [LVG] and start culling certain players.

    1. We should not under any circumstances renew contract of Diaby at end
of season. this is a player not able to play more than one or two games
without injury. He does not justify a salary of £50K Pw.

    2. Walcott,Wilshire and Gibbs should also be reevaluated. They get injured
far too frequently. They may be talented, but if they cannot play regularly
it adds pressure on others to play too often and cover for them. If they
are a risk then offload them whilst they have a market value.

3.We have on our books too many players past their best e.g. Arteta, Rosicky
and Flamini. Mertesacker may also fall into that category, but he may still
be good enough as a squad player rather than first team regular. Their
contracts should not be renewed unless they add value as a potential coach,
which may be case with Arteta.

4.There are several players who are either not good enough or triplicate to
our current requirements and therefore unlikely to play regularly in first
team eg Sanogo, Podolski and Campbell.

    5. There are a number of players who may be good enough as squad players,
but not as first team regulars e.g. Szczesny, Mertesacker, Giroud.

My view is that the manager needs to be more ruthless than Wenger appears
to be and that is why he should leave in summer and allow someone else to
do this job. We don’t need to make wholesale changes immediately, but we
do need an upgrade of between 4-5 players in next two transfer windows.

  27. N5

Thank you Ashwin, I’ve been putting in the work for years now and this morning it all just come together. I was focused and committed and eventually, when you put your mind to it and get a string of wins together, eventually you get there.

I will never repeat what happened on this day, but at least you will all remember where you were the day it happened.

  28. Romford Pele

Tunny, I, and many others, were praying Akpom would get on last night. It’s evident he’s miles better than Sanogo, and that really is no exaggeration. Game was tailor-made for him. Has pace for days to burn.

Yeah Ox and Ramsey looked good together, was only one game but looked to have more chemistry than Wilshere-Ramsey ever has. That said, I think Ramsey plays better with Arteta than anyone else.

  29. Gus J

Pedro, don’t really get the dig at Mourinho for getting one over the national sides and keeping his best players in the fold. Particularly after the FIFA debacles going on, I am not sure why I would give a toss about any international game (which already bore me to tears).

Sepp and his dirty chronies can all sod off. Qatar and Russia, football merits. Yeah right!

    Gus

  30. Josip Skoblar

    Romford
Agreed mate. The return of Debuchy might prove decisive for the team. He’ll bring class, calm and experience to our defence. Great win! Now bring on Newcastle!

  31. Leedsgunner

    Jim

He was their captain. He had a very good international record, quick feet, good pace two footed — honestly the way Sanogo trips over his feet again and again you would think he was learning to walk still!

  32. Ashwin Gunner

    N5
    LOL

i really cant believe that RVG took Man u to 3rd. they have more chance of having a shout at the title than we have. A month back Pedro was predicting that RVG will blow up at man utd.

  33. Romford Pele

Josip, indeed my friend. *touch wood* Saturday might be the first time we can actually field our strongest back five this season:

    Szcz
    Debuchy Mert Kos Gibbs

Would make a world of difference.

  34. Leedsgunner

    Romford

Your “WHATSINTHEBOTTLE” hashtag was very very funny yesterday. Well done had me chuckling all day. 😉

I now say, “A TY born every minute.”

  35. Jim Lahey

@leeds – Just had a look and the 3 years Park was at the club he started 4 games for arsenal (3 CC games) and made 2 sub appearances.

    Whats Sanogo on already?!

  36. azed

” though I don’t particularly rate PSG tbh.”

Zlatan would have a field day destroying the careers of Per and whoever we pair him with.

  37. Steveyg87

    Excellent result last night!

As Romford pointed out earlier, everything we saw from Poldi last night we already knew. The guy has a accurate lethal left foot, other than that he’s pretty garbage. some1 suggested we play him through the middle when ozil returns, lord help me if this happens. he’s our equivalent of Darren Gibson.

  38. Romford Pele

Azed, don’t get me wrong, they have great players, but whenever I watch PSG that’s exactly what they look like, a team of individuals rather than a great cohesive unit. Despite all the money they’ve spent, the likes of City and PSG are no closer to winning the CL than Arsenal are. They should beat us, but then it wouldn’t really surprise me if Arsenal beat them.

  39. shad

I expect Chuba to be gone come the summer as well as Joel Campbell, Rosicky and Poldi.

As someone said, it was a waste of a performance as we did ourselves in allowing Anderlecht to claw their way back in. Perennial naivete. We capitulate when it matters most and then turn in a performance to save the old man’s bacon.

Moving forward, I have no expectations for Newcastle’s game – looks like a stamped on draw.

Yes we need bolstering in Jan but do we honestly trust Wenger to make the right signings? Doesn’t matter what Pedro or the club tell us that they are in talks with such and such a club. I am braced for disappointment. I’d rather he not spend and leave the coffers untouched for a new gaffer.

Anyway, congrats to the team on a meaningless win. Good to see Ramsey and Ox bossing the game. Hopefully they can continue in that form bar injury.

  40. Alfie

“I cannot believe he was as bad as Sanogo because his international record was very god before he came to Arsenal. Wenger completely ruined him.”

You can lead a horse to water mate……….

  41. Leedsgunner

Did Yaya just sh*t himself when Aaron’s shot went in? Sure looks like it. 😉

Thanks for posting that RP — very very funny… You’re on a roll mate!

  42. Carts

    Nice win yesterday. Inevitable, no?!

nothing to write home about besides the 2 goals a-piece for Ramno and Pod. With Pod, what you have is a clinical beast in front of goal. Cons: he’s such a ‘safe player’. Not very inventive and loves a quiet moment a bit too often. I’ve always though that him playing wide left negates his impact. I find it hard to believe he’s never played in the #10 role. His shooting is ferocious and I’m conviced he could pick out a through ball or two.

JC, JC…didn’t really expect him to move mountains. I’m not even about to pick holes in his game neither. Dude never plays. With that said, he’s more than capable and the fact he can’t even get on the bench is a major disrespect. Like Pod, he’ll be gone by the summer.

Let’s home the UEFA God show mercy on us and we get a favourable draw.

  43. Leedsgunner

    Alfie

That’s my point Sanogo is getting so much playing time than his actually ability deserves.

I’m not saying Park was the Korean Messi but he deserved more of a chance especially versus the weakest sides to give our first XI a rest.

  44. Romford Pele

“Would you have chambers before Per if he wasn’t suspended?”

Personally I would mate but I don’t think that’s a very popular opinion 😉 I’m not Per’s biggest fan, but he’s a lot better when Kos is next to him.

  45. Carts

“People tried to use Balotelli as some sort of scapegoat for all their problems, but it goes much deeper than that. In a game Rodgers needed to win last night he left Coutinho and Lallana on the bench”

100% agree. People trying their utmost to pick holes in Balotelli’s performances when the truth of the matter is that his performaces aren’t the issue. It’s a collective issue. Service up to him has been dire! Even Lovren has been doo-doo.

Leaving Lallana on the bench had Lee Dixon almost reeling. I don’t rate Coutinho at all so fook him! Markovic red card was patheitc by the ref.

  46. Romford Pele

“Oh and another thing: how Crowley and Akpom weren’t the first names on the team bench I’ll never know.”

Crowley was playing for the U19s. After going 3-0 up, Wenger wanted to rest Rambo and Flamini. And he didn’t want Debuchy to have the full 90 mins after 3 months out. Still, really upset Akpom didn’t get on. I’m not even sure what i’m supposed to be looking at RE Sanogo. Yeah he’s strong, big whoop. But he finds it hard to walk.

  47. tunnygriffboy

The result may have meaningless but the performance wasn’t

    Bellerin gets another full game
Debuchy gets 75 good minutes in. Does he play Saturday or do we ease him back Ramsey getting his shooting boots back on
Podolski and Campbell get a full game under their belts. They will be needed over Christmas, 4 games in ten games, three away.

Victory brings back a bit of confidence

Imagine our strongest back 5 with Matic ahead of them.

  48. Carts

    “Alfie
That’s my point Sanogo is getting so much playing time than his actually ability deserves.
I’m not saying Park was the Korean Messi but he deserved more of a chance especially versus the weakest sides to give our first XI a rest”

    Spot on.

Sanogo’s situation is nothing but favourtism. In reality he shouldn’t be anywhere near our first team. Should be out on loan at very most.

Park actually had an ok Ligue 1 record; and his intl goal:game is good as well.
Scored a very good goal at the Emirates – i forget who against – that clearly pissed off Wenger and we didn’t see him again.

  49. Carts

RP – thanks for clearing that up. Completely forgot the u19s were playing last night. No highlights just yet. And I suppose going about it the way Wenger did kind of makes sense (pains me to say that ¬___¬)

  50. Bamford13

Again, Sanogo’s playing time is explained partly by his being Wenger’s latest project, and partly by the return the club will see if he can be sold on for a decent fee after gaining credibility with Arsenal.

Buy low, lend credibility, sell high.

  51. Leedsgunner

“Scored a very good goal at the Emirates – i forget who against – that clearly pissed off Wenger and we didn’t see him again.”

Versus Bolton in the Carling Cup — he was fed a sweet through ball by Arshavin and Park hit a very Bergkampesque curling strike strike… it was a very very good goal. Made up 90% of his highlights video on Arsenal.com at the end of year as I recall. I guess they had nothing else to go on.

  52. tunnygriffboy

    Romford

Agree with that team. Would imagine that it would be similar for the Lpool game a week later, maybe Ox in for L’oreal. Qpr game boxing day the one to rotate. Then we have West Ham and Southampton away but they not used to playing so many games in short space of time.

    Double gooner

So Merson has said Rambo off to Barca. Didn’t they say that last season as well

  53. Biggles

Romford, Cologne played Podolski up front on his own quite a lot. Sometimes he played off Novakovic, but frequently it was as a lone striker. He had a than 1 in 2 goals per game ratio when he played there over the last two seasons with them – in his first season of the second spell he played as a winger and scored a whopping 3 goals in the whole season. I’d say he works better in a 4-4-2 alongside a Klose type, but he’s a better centre forward than he is winger.

He’d score a crapload more goals against the Burnleys of the world than Giroud would, that’s for sure.

  54. Leedsgunner

“Buy low, lend credibility, sell high.”

You would think so Bamford, but they absolutely missed the boat with Joel Campbell didn’t they? After his great showing WC – ok, one good showing and rest ok… AC Milan were apparently willing to pay £15m for him. Now I doubt anyone would pay over £5m.

  55. tunnygriffboy

Did anyone see the man u Southampton game ? Were they as lucky to win as the press said ? To be honest we should have been a couple up first half then we gifted them the points. Basically I’m asking if you think we can catch them

  56. Emiratesstroller

Obviously Debuchy,Mertesacker,Koscielny and Gibbs should be our first choice defence.

However, noone should regard this as a perfect line up. Last season we played
them apart from Debuchy [Sagna] on many occasions and in the games that
    mattered we lost badly.

Frankly there is a vulnerability in the way we play. This is down in part to lack of quality holding player in midfield. However, it is also due to full backs out
of position, lack of physicality and aerial play in team and a zonal marking system at corners and set pieces where we are poor.

  57. Romford Pele

“I’d say he works better in a 4-4-2 alongside a Klose type, but he’s a better centre forward than he is winger.”

I’d go with this, but rarely do we ever play two up top. Maybe if we were chasing a game it’d be worth going for, but then I think i’d prefer any combo of Alexis/Welbz/L’Oreal/Theo up top tbh.

Maybe it is just me, but i’m not his biggest fan. Finishing wise, there aren’t many better but his general game is so poor it beggars belief.

“He’d score a crapload more goals against the Burnleys of the world than Giroud would, that’s for sure.”

Well this is the thing. Poldi is a much better finisher, sure. But his movement is so bad that I doubt he’d get these kind of chances L’Oreal does anyway. L’Oreal misses a lot but his movement enables him to get this chance in the first place. Poldi would just be waiting on the egde of the area.

  58. Jim Lahey

Just watched that goal he scored Vs Bolton, great finish! But also, Arshavin was a demon when he got to play in that No.10 role, very suited to it. So of course he spent his days dogging it up and down the left wing.

  59. Leedsgunner

“Frankly there is a vulnerability in the way we play. This is down in part to lack of quality holding player in midfield. However, it is also due to full backs out
of position, lack of physicality and aerial play in team and a zonal marking system at corners and set pieces where we are poor.”

Mistakes we all know about but errors that Wenger does nothing to correct.

  60. Carts

Discussion between Quinn, Redknapp and Merson was quite interesting last night, before the match.

Even Redknapp knows the whole ‘financial constraint bollocks’ is utter bollocks. Wenger values attacking players higher than defensive players – which is bizarre because it’s not even like we’ve produced any defenders. At least if we’d developed our own John Terry then you could understand his rationale.

If you’re going to spend £45m and £35m on two attacking player, why so reluctant to do so for a CB and DM.

The other funny think was when Merson said ‘If Rooney is on £250k p/w, there’s no way Smalling will be on anything near that much’. Bit awkward if you were Ronney and Smalling watching that segement. I see his point though. A socialist model doesnt work. And when you go certain players like Ramsey and Wilshere on crazy cake it really does skew everything.

Granted Sanchez and Ozil are on something like £130k-£150k, but let’s be honest…only one of them deserve that kind of cake. No prizes for the correct name.

” a zonal marking system at corners and set pieces where we are poor.”

Mate we barely conceded from set-pieces last season.

  62. Leedsgunner

But also, Arshavin was a demon when he got to play in that No.10 role, very suited to it. So of course he spent his days dogging it up and down the left wing.

… Just like Özil was before he went off crocked. Wenger never learns.

  63. Jim Lahey

@Tunny – “Basically I’m asking if you think we can catch them”

Yea I think we can, I watched the United game Vs Southampton, was not impressed with United at all. Southampton ran through them for fun at times. Poor finishing really cost them. That and Fonte’s suicidal pass back. Fellaini looked awful, very unasured on the ball especially so close to his own box. United at times look great going forward (and with the money they have spent you would expect nothing less) but much like us, teams can score against them all too easily.

  64. Carts

“Made up 90% of his highlights video on Arsenal.com at the end of year as I recall. I guess they had nothing else to go on.”

Mate, just let out a ‘paha’ reading that. Having not seen the the highlight vid I just envisioned a 3 minute vid showing Parks goal from every possible fucking angle known to man. I’m talking even in a 5th dimension…something out of Interstellar LOL.

Arshavin went from being the best #10 in the Euros to a nobody in 3 years.

  65. Leedsgunner

    Bamford13

My point is if players are not going to be played they should be sold for actual players that do. What’s the point keeping them on the wage bill?

No use listing the fringe players, we all know who they are. Gazidas should be working the phones now trying to offload deadwood in January. We should then use these proceeds to bring in and strengthen where necessary.

  66. tunnygriffboy

Oh oh ! After a good hour discussing the game last night and talking about some positives I can see us coming back to the Wenger annihilation. Time to go methinks. Catch you guys later 🙂 🙂

  67. Carts

Tunny – pretty much what Jim said.

I thought that there were sporadic moment in the game where you thought Utd would kick on another gear…but it didn’t happen. Considering they’ve won 5 on the bounce, they still lack cohesion and overall confidence.

With that said, I think that’s due to the defence. When the ball goes into the box, everyone is on edge. They should revery to a flat 4; but they’ve got no RBs and one player that can play LB but looks better CB – Rojo. As Shaw is injured.

  68. Leedsgunner

“Arshavin went from being the best #10 in the Euros to a nobody in 3 years.”

The honest reality of Wenger’s man management skills. The sad thing is he’s doing the same thing to Özil.

I wish Wenger would spend LESS time bragging to everyone about who he COULD have signed and spend more time making the players he HAS signed better.

  69. Leedsgunner

“Lol Ramsey is the antithesis of a Barca player. Wilshere, sure. But Ramsey, no.”

Here’s an interesting thought… if Barca was willing to do a player swap for Wilshere, yes or no? Who would you take?

Montoya having a very good season this year, 23. In like of our immediate DM needs I wonder if they would consider swapping Busquets for Wilshere…

Funny enough, I could actually see Wulshere doing very very very in La Liga, he’s very technical and they more room to dribble due to the pace being slower.

Probably a non-starter though… Barça is probably sick of seeing injury prone Arsenal players for a while.

  70. kapslock

Ramsey’s goal was special, finally finding some form at the most important period of the season.

Heard Schar was top quality for Basel last night, can sign on a pre-contract in Jan. Go for it Arsene.

  71. Romford Pele

Leeds – yeah I don’t think Barca will be buying players from us anytime soon. Busquets/Mascherano would be the players I take from there but they wouldn’t be interested in selling them. Maybe a cheeky bid for that Messi gent?

  72. Romford Pele

The goal was outrageous, really does get better everytime you watch it. The technique is really interesting though. He leaves his foot planted there after the strike. Extraordinary. Could definitely get a good highlight reel of his best strikes.

    Ramsey vs Gala
    Ramsey vs Cardiff (1)
    Ramsey vs Sunderland (1&2)
    Ramsey vs Liverpool
    Ramsey vs Norwich

    My favs from him

  73. TitsMcgee

Granted Sanchez and Ozil are on something like £130k-£150k, but let’s be honest…only one of them deserve that kind of cake. No prizes for the correct name.”

Podolski is rumored to be on 110k.

    It’s ridiculous.

  74. goonpharm

    Curious case of Podolski.

The guy has the attributes to be a very, very good player but I’ve always thought his attitude isn’t 100%. He seems the type who is happy to coast through his career. It’s almost like Wenger in that they do just enough to stay in a job.

Last night he steps up and lashes a fantastic goal in early. He then shows desire and drives into the box for his 2nd goal in the 93rd minute. Why doesn’t he show that commitment every time?

I think Quinn called it last night. When he’s bothered he’s an asset but most games he’s on the periphery of the game and it passes him by.

He can play up top in a pair but lone striker? No way. Sanchez off him as support striker would be interesting.

  75. Leedsgunner

Second for Schrar here. Excellent young player. I would love to see him here. Use the money getting Scrar on a free and spend it toward getting Ricardo Rodriguez at Wolfsburg… excellent LB. Gibbs isn’t injury free enough to do it for me. Ok as a squad player maybe but I don’t think his body is up to it to be a dependable starter in the biggest games. Time to cut losses I think.

  76. Du Vi

The vast majority of Arsenal fans aren’t very bright …. so quick to spotlight Podolski’s supposed flaws yet they have two players in Wellbeck and Olivier Giroud who wouldn’t look out of place a Burnley leading the line for them and handing them contracts they wouldn’t get anywhereelse..

  77. Emiratesstroller

Wenger does not believe in spending serious money on defenders. The only
one who cost more than £10 million is Chambers and considering that he was
bought as a squad player we overpaid for him when we spent £16 million whatever the view of his potential. The problem is that Man Utd spent almost £30 million on Shaw.

Realistically there are few defenders who merit spending more than £20 million and they come at premium prices. Hummels will probably fetch £30 million, which is a price we should be able to afford for a player with high level consistency and who was first choice for Germany in World Cup.

When it comes to wages I do think that Arsenal had a problem of Wenger’s making. He viewed wage structure based on egalitarian socialist principles
rather than on merit, which is why so many players walked out of club.

Top players who make a real difference to performance should be paid more
than those who are average and are two a penny.

At the moment we have two players on our books who are rated world class in
Sanchez and Ozil. To secure them we needed to pay market rates for their services i.e. what other major clubs in Europe are paying.

The problem is that incoming players do not always play to full potential which is probably case with Ozil at moment.

  78. Carts

“Podolski is rumored to be on 110k.
    It’s ridiculous.”

In the context of what he’s become, it is. Considering he arrived for the nominal fee of £10m and with very good stats £100k-£110k look understandable.

Wenger’s now turned him into a side dish collect crazy coin. Now it’s ridiculous!!!

  79. Carts

“spend it toward getting Ricardo Rodriguez at Wolfsburg… excellent LB.”

    Schmeltzer…rumour he’s available for £10m?

  80. relieable sauce

lol.ughelli you are funny, heaven forbid us fans talking tactics & formations on a football blog. Whatever next??? Hypocrisy shocker.

    keyser

If you got the formation why did you ask – “Sanchez inside of Pod?”.
Was just trying to explain it better.

The problem isnt one of gelling so much its that the team is terribly imbalanced as you allude to & the players Arsene has bought just aren’t good enough or are too injury prone to enable them time to gel.
Parlour is the only player that would be cut from that side in favour of one our current ones. ONE PLAYER.
    Progress??? Clearly not.

  81. N5

Sorry Alfie, I was working for a change :D, anyway, I’m good mate. Glad you had a good time. Did you come back flush or pocketless? did the wifey enjoy herself too?

  82. Jaroda

The draw looks like it could fall into one categories:
Athletico Madrid, Porto, Monaco – Beatable
Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG/Barca – Gonna spank us.
Guess which one we’ll get drawn against!

  83. Carts

E-Stroller – £30m on Shaw and Rio means, if all goes well, similarly to Rio’s career, they’ve got a LB for 10 years +.

Wenger is a fool for not understanding the disparity in defender prices usually refers to their quality…especially when we’re talking upper-echelons.

Before someone screams Chygrinsky, Woodgate, Samuel…yes we get it…some defenders purchases don’t always workout.

But people are so quick to use other teams’ testimonies as a gauge on who we should and shouldn’t buy; and for how much.

Not a massive fan of Hummels. Down to me I’d go for Subotic as the more pure defender.

  84. Dan T

So pleased Debuchy is back. I really rate him and not keen on Chambers at right-back. Have to give credit to Newcastle too. Getting Janmat as a replacement for 7 Million less than they sold Debuchy for and lower wages. He’s been fantastic this season. Coloccini is back to his best now too – he marked Costa out of the game last week.

We have to be wary of committing too many people forward on Saturday. They ruined Chelsea on the break.

  85. TitsMcgee

When it comes to wages I do think that Arsenal had a problem of Wenger’s making. He viewed wage structure based on egalitarian socialist principles
rather than on merit, which is why so many players walked out of club.”

…and why we can’t move on the dross when we need to because the buying club(usually smaller) can’t pay the ridic wages we’ve given to said player.

It also , in a way, buys a player’s loyalty at the same time.

  86. Emiratesstroller

Schar is most definitely a player I would like to bring in if available in January or July since his current contract with Basle ends then.

Most definitely a quality defender on evidence of what I have seen including last night. Personally I would pay what it takes to secure services in January, because for sure other clubs will be after him in New Year.

Good centre backs do not grow on trees and I can tell you now that he is a significantly better prospect than Chambers. The other great prospect is Varane
but unfortunately he signed a new contract recently with RM so he would not come cheap.

  87. Dissenter

It’s tiresome reading that we are after strikers or attCking midfielders.

Personally, I think there should be a moratorium on any transfer activity of that type.
We need to sort out the other half of the field, goal keeper included.
We have decent attackers, can’t beleve we have a £110k weekly ( and 110 capped )German international striker rusting on the bench.

Podolski should have gotten more games, despite his limitations. Jeez our goal difference is 12 less that Southampton’s

  88. Zementalstrength

“The key to December is your squad, how you manage it and how you utilise the best approach for each game.”

So I guess we’re in trouble lol

  89. TitsMcgee

But people are so quick to use other teams’ testimonies as a gauge on who we should and shouldn’t buy; and for how much.”

    Amen

  90. TitsMcgee

The other great prospect is Varane
but unfortunately he signed a new contract recently with RM so he would not come cheap.”

Madrid wouldn’t sell him to us regardless of price.

  91. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal’s major problem this season is that we have struggled to score early
in far too many games and even when we do so you feel always that we are not
in full control and that we will concede.

When that happens we tend to play frenetic football in last quarter of hour, because we have been too often behind or drawing games. Man Utd was typical of our performance too often this season and so was game against Stoke.

If we had a secure and disciplined defence that would be less likely to happen.

  92. Goondawg

Rambos goal against stoke wasnt half too bad either!

The most telling bit after the game was when Wenger admitted he wasnt impressed when he saw Ramsey line up the shot, but was happy with the outcome either way. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “When he took the shot I thought that was maybe not the best idea, but the way he took it, it flew in.” This really irks my bones man, Ive always hated it when we are in the opposition box, trying to pass our way into the net!

  93. gambon

    I actually agree with Wenger.

Ramseys shot misses 99%+ of the time.

Yes it was a great goal, but that doesnt mean its the right choice.

Wenger is a stats man, everything he does is based around a mathematical reasoning. Its just his reasoning is likely quite poor in various areas, hence how rigid he is with these ideas.

  94. Romford Pele

“Yes it was a great goal, but that doesnt mean its the right choice.”

Nothing wrong with going for it. Not like we score directly from corners anyway.

  95. Romford Pele

“This really irks my bones man, Ive always hated it when we are in the opposition box, trying to pass our way into the net!”

    Yeah exactly.

  96. gazzap

it actually makes me angry at how under used Podolski is. He is a wide forward and suits the 4-3-3 system that we play. People say he doesn’t protect his full back but he does as much as say Cazorla but is far more dangerous in the box than Welbeck or Cazorla or just about anyone else for that matter. He would score us enough goals and win us enough games to be worth having him in the side.
Football is all about goals – scoring and conceding. And this season has proven we need to improve in both penalty boxes. I think Podolski is far more valuable than a number of other players who seem to be wenger’s favourites including Ozil.

  97. Gunnershabz

i think i agreed with jamie redknapp, paul merson and niall quinn last night about wenger value for defenders, he does not spend that much on defenders and he does go into the bargain basement

kos cost like £8m and was a risk from ligue 2
    per cost like £8-9m
    debuchy cost £11m
    sagna cost £7m
    squilacci cost £3m
    silvestre cost £750k
    cygan cost £2m (i think)
    sol campbell Free
    kolo toure was £250k
    monreal cost £8m
    chambers was £12m
    clichy was £750k

so he does not go all out for defenders really only chambers due to english value and debuchy because of rival premier league sell in modern era

wenger always go for a find instead of ready made replacement

  98. gazzap

gambon, you might be right but wenger’s message gets into the player’s heads and ends up with them not shooting in very presentable situations. Other teams will shoot in those same situations and I think we miss a lot of goals from over playing in the box.

  99. karim

I would not compare Paris to City as Psg usually show up when it matters but I will easily concede they can look horrible and self satisfied against lower opposition
Still, I would not be too optimistic if we drew them

Monaco would be the ideal draw, Toulalan and Berbatov are ageing, their most dangerous player is Ferreira – Carrasco, who’s not even in the Belgian 23
Moutinho, while being very talented, isn’t having a great time though he was excellent yesterday night

  100. Romford Pele

Gunnershabz – no real idea mate. United actually have loads of defenders and LVG is known for given youngsters a chance so it depends how much he rates them. They have:

    Jones
    Smalling
    Rojo
    Evans
    McNair
    Blackett

So that’s six CBs for two positions. Some of them can play FB. I think they may be in for a RB

  101. Gunnershabz

    Romford

yes they seem to have a lot of defenders but they cant defend as a team same as us really

but we really did miss out on that greek defender though he has been superb for roma

manolas his name and good price as well

i cant believe we didnt go hard for him
