Burnley today. Hey hey

Not good for your hangover

Morning all! Alex here, drafted in at the last minute with the mother of all hangovers to try and put enough words in the right order to create something legible and interesting. Let’s see how we get on…

So how was your Halloween? Did you trick or did you treat? Did you set a firework off in a pensioners face or did you end up at a house party being sick off a balcony? Whatever you did, I hope you stayed safe.

So onto football and Arsenal. God it feels like a long time doesn’t it? Well it’s not been really but the fact is I’ve missed our last two games. In fact, I haven’t even had time to watch the highlights. However I did get a flavour of the respective performances we put in by following the games on twitter (the home of reasoned and balanced analysis). For what its worth, here’s my two cents:

Anderlecht – like getting a lapdance off your nan for 85 minutes, only for Rachel Riley to show up at the end in a bikini with a bottle of champagne

Sunderland – like watching golf in a Volvo with Michael Owen

Nonetheless, two wins is two wins, we must look forward not back etc etc. Today we face recently promoted Burnley who come from somewhere up north. I know very little about them, other than the fact that Alistair Campbell is a fan and their manager always sounds like he needs to clear his throat. So little to analyse tactically here, however to be fair this is probably one of those games where Arsene’s ‘we play our own style, balls to your team and your “tactics”’ philosophy can actually work. We are good enough to beat Burnley at home. Scrap that; we should be thrashing them.

The big news, for me anyway, is that Theo is getting closer to a return to the first team. It may be an uncontroversial thing to say but it can’t come soon enough. We have been pretty woeful this season and, before he got injured, I would say he was on the cusp of becoming a world class player. The kind of guy who can win games for you on his own. Let’s hope his lengthy lay-off hasn’t hindered his progress and his return will be the fillip the team needs to get the season back on track.

Amazingly according to Squawka and Physio Room, Arsenal have had 73 injuries in the time Theo has been out; with Gibbs and Wilshere picking up 6 separate injuries each. Bonkers if true. But don’t worry guys, Arsenal are on to their third internal review, so I’m pretty sure they’ll have figured out what the problem is by January (ps it wont be the manager).

The only other team news to note is that Wilshere is out, but Gibbs might play leaving us with one fit defender or something (I can’t keep track to be honest).

Ok that’s your lot from me today, hopefully there’s enough get you through the morning, prep you for today’s game and bring about the end of capitalist society as we know it. (If you want to know where Russell Brand got the idea for his revolution from; it was here, the ONLY anarcho-syndicalist Arsenal blog worth reading.)

I might be back tomorrow with a match report which will be better than this, I promise. In the meantime please follow me on twitter @aldo_doel – this is a cynical appeal for numbers. I need more numbers.

Ps If you are going to the game today remember, if you don’t sing, then it’s your fault if we don’t win and you should probably kill yourself for not being a real fan.

Pps only joking, please don’t do that x

Today is the AKB cup final. The game the muppets will remember in 20 years. They still talk about us beating the awful Derby in 2008 6-2

    Burnley 0 WBA 4
    Burnley 1 Chelsea 3
    Burnley 1 Everton 3

All other games been really close. Assumption we roll them over 5 nil is somewhat optimistic and unrealistic. They’ll work exceptionally hard, we’ll have to break them down and keep our concentration at the back.

ja, win today and Tuesday and we’re suddenly on a little run. really hope we can show Anderlecht a bit more of what we’re about. the first game was a very low point in all repsects bar the final result.

  5. tunnygriffboy

Yeah a nice little run, hang on the coat tails, slowly get some players back and then MAYBE get what we need in January and hope for a much better 2nd half of the season.

  6. Cesc Appeal

All depends on the system today.

4-2-3-1 with proper personnel and not a bottle job line up (at least Wilshere isn’t available to jimmy in) and we should steam roller them.

4-1-4-1 and we’ll make hard work of it. Still win, but it’ll be hard.

I’m hoping once Walcott is starting fit it’ll mean and end to Wilshere in the starting line up and we can go back to a 4-2-3-1 which once Ozil returns will look particularly good. Even better if Wenger decides to actually do his job and buy a CDM and a full compliment of defenders.

  7. Cesc Appeal

I can see United winning tomorrow actually.

I think it’ll be a tight but I can see them doing it.

They defended much better against Chelsea, albeit without having to deal with Costa. But there’s more than enough in their front line to trouble that creaky City defence right now.

    Should be a good game.

  8. tunnygriffboy

Bar the West Brom result they’ve always been in the game. No gret talent but well organised and nuggety. Would like an early goal and our defence to concentrate 100%. Really hope it’s 4-2-3-1 with Sanchez in the hole. Be good to see Theo get some time as well.

City will really mis Silva tomorrow. Think it will be tight. Will see if last week was a one off for man u defence.

  9. Wallace

City usually raise it for Utd. there’s probably a good chance a few of their players are struggling for motivation after winning the league last time out, but think the really big games will bring the added focus. also thought it was a case of Chelsea letting Utd back into it last week, rather than Utd upping their game.

21 mins in watching liverfool.. balotelli hasnt come close to touching the ball yet. Its like playing with 10 men. Not a pass, touch,he’s just waiting for teed up shot. Even if he scores today, he’s trash.

Stand up all you people who wanted him… be a man and mention it when u post any comment. Say, wenger has to go, wilshere suks, and by the way, I wanted balotelli.

  11. Sensible old man

God, balotelli is fucking awful – doesn’t run, doesn’t do anything. I’m so glad we didn’t buy him and I admit I was open to it- only because of desperation though.

Great comment on Theo. I can’t help but agree.

As for the its cool to slag of theo crowd fuck right off.

A player who without his goals/assists and match winning contributions we would not have made top 4 when RVP left, which means no ozil and no sanchez.

The player who consistently has out scored and out assisted the whole team for 3 seasons now yet his name is constantly bashed and smeared in the mud when wilshere, ramsey, ox are massively loved and rated as better than theo despite not even achieving half as much nay not even a quarter.

  13. london gunner

    Oh and Coutinho>Wilshere

More pace, better dribbler, better passer, much better vision, long range passer, through ball expert and doesn’t lose possession every 2 seconds… granted his finishing is a massive weak aspect to his game but Jacks no better at finishing tbh.

  14. tunnygriffboy

Totally agree with you re Theo. Always fell we’re more dangerous when he plays. Can’t agree with you re Coutinho > Wilshere. Yes he’s quicker but Wilshere more rounded player imo. Know you not a Wilshere fan though.

  15. london gunner

Well of course I already proved that the other week. 🙂

I think theo is just one of those players people want to hate on and they do so without evaluating the data (because it would disprove their beliefs) I mean the other day when I provided the data people on here got really outraged when the stats didn’t back up their “facts”.

You simply can’t be a limited player and have one of the highest combined goals and assists in the most competitive league in the world with only players like suarez and bale are above him…

I think a lot of the hate is because when he came to the club he was billed as the next thiery when he was never going to be on that level not in a hundred years.

He is what he is which is an absolute menace/goal scoring/assist machine who even when he isn’t scoring forces the other team to drop deep which creates space and time in the middle of the park for are players to dominate.

  16. Cesc Appeal

Yeah I’d rather have Coutinho to Wilshere.

I was saying yesterday (I think..got this weird head cold thing so days are sort of merging a bit) I’d rather sell Wilshere to some suckers like Liverpool say, and then get in a CDM and say a buy like Tadic. So an ACTUAL CDM and an ACTUAL CAM instead of Wilshere who I’m just not sure what he is or does.

  17. Cesc Appeal

But then you look at their Chelsea result where they played okay, it was at home, first game of the season.

Bottom line is we KNOW what they’re going to do, clutter the middle, compact the centre of the defence and hope to hit us on the break or at set pieces.

So it’s our job to counter that.

I think with Costa Chelsea may have won that 2-3 or maybe even 3-1 but it’s all guesswork now.

I do feel it will be a good one though. City, even against Spurs where the scoreline flattered them didn’t look great and Spurs carved them open a lot.

Just feel if Van Gaal get’s the balance right they’ll cause City some serious problems, particularly Di Maria with his pace and dribbling.

  18. N5

No hate for Theo from a single person, just don’t rate as highly as London. Not sure who is being referred to when saying he’s being hated on.

To be honest I can’t believe it is being discussed again.

Jack jack of all trades master of none.

My problem is exactly this. His not a good enough CAM/Playmaker his simply not good enough in this role its been proven time after time.

So what does that leave? Box to box? Maybe he can make it but not until he keeps giving up possession in dangerous areas and dribbling down blind alleys, but worst of us he kills us on the counter attack with to many touches.

In theory he could be a box to box but he needs to improve his game massively, look up more stop the pass and also stop trying to dribble through the centre of the 18 yard box he always does this gets tackled/floored and leaves the team to counter.

Walcott has limitations his not the best dribbler so he works around this with exceptional pace, timing and a pretty damn underrated first touch.

Jack’s weakness is his ego/imagination predictably trying to take on to much, attempting the mazy run everytime and more often than not failing, also he has his physical weaknesses his easily knocked to the ground and generally easy to disposes.

He needs to do a theo he needs to find work around’s.

  20. tunnygriffboy

That part of Wilshere’s problem, he’s shunted around a number of position. Wenger see’s him as flexible filling in where we have injuries. May say he’s young and he will benefit from moving around the pitch, personally I think he needs to play in one position. Alongside a proper CDM for me, rotating with Ramsey.

  21. tunnygriffboy

Agree he takes too many touches but he needs to be told that and have a size 10 up his arse. Will Wenger do that. ‘Jack of all trades ‘ suits him well. See my recent post 🙂

Agree we know what they going to do. We got the early goal v Hull but some crass defending gave them the equaliser within 3 minutes. Hence they could get back into their shape. Need to be precise, play with more width and concentrate in defence.

  22. Cesc Appeal

I said in the summer (along with RP) I think we should have signed TWO players for a CM and then a proper CDM and sent Wilshere out on loan – Saints was my choice back then and it looks like it would have been perfect for him.

See how he does and then either bring him back or sell him if he can’t carve a position in a team like that (with respect to Saints who I love).

I don’t think we’re doing him any good here, because he hasn’t progressed in the last couple of seasons (I know he’s had some injuries) but he hasn’t wiped out his constant mistakes and he STILL doesn’t fit with Arsenal, Arsenal have to fit around him and frankly he isn’t good enough to warrant us warping our style and flow for him.

I’m not hating on Wilshere, he’s a bit of a cock, but he’s our cock and I can see the potential in him. And I do think he’s one of those players who could very well flourish away from us – but a combination of too much too young, a bad attitude, lack of progression and lack of help from the manager mean he’s in a bad place right now.

  23. Cesc Appeal

Same team as last week then:

Sky Sports: Chambers, Mert, Monreal, Gibbs, Arteta, Flamini, Oxlade, Cazorla, Sanchez, Welbeck

Come on then Sanchez…on you again mate

  24. Wallace

“Come on then Sanchez…on you again mate.”

Arteta said last week the change in formation was geared up to give Sanchez licence to roam. interesting he’s gone for Flamini again over Ramsey.

  25. Jeff

    Looks like a 4231.

We should win this. Burnley away from home will play a very cagey game and we’re not very good at breaking people down so if we won’t be winning it with a cricket score. I’ll say 2:0 to us.

  26. Cesc Appeal

I could understand last week away from home, but home, to a Burnley side who we know exactly what they’re going to do?

I think you’ve got to stick your B2B goal threat in there as well, start giving Ramsey games in the position he occupied last year not this new, weird one.

I’d like to see how he and Sanchez work pushing through the middle.

  27. Cesc Appeal

Joel Campbell dropped from the BENCH for SANOGO!

Why didn’t you sell him then Arsene when his value was highest after the WC…makes no sense at all!

Could have used him in some part exchange as well maybe…ffs

  28. tunnygriffboy

Think he wants clean sheets. Not mad for Flam/Arteta personally but think he’s protecting our back four ( shouldn’t be in that position ). Would rather see Rambo in there but maybe he’s taking time after injury and looking after him. Who knows ? Up to Alexis again, but that’s why we paid 35 million. Started brilliantly but needs some support today.

  29. Cesc Appeal

    It’s ridiculously stupid.

Wenger would have known after the WC whether he was going to use him or not, Giroud’s injury doesn’t really matter.

Wenger clearly wasn’t intent on using him. We’ll miss out on more than a few million because of it, after a WC is when you want to sell especially the WC he had with Costa Rica!

Again Wenger’s dithering indecisiveness. That’s why I like a Mourinho type, knows what he wants, goes and does it. Wenger doesn’t, he strikes me as a “satisfied” type manager.

  30. Goondawg

I think in this game, where Burnley will be hard to break down and undoubtedly sit deep, we need more control players rather than pacy players. Hence I would have liked to see Rosicky have run out instead of Ox, but this team is good enough. Hope Cazorla improves from his last outings. Sanchez to get a brace!

    Have faith! COYG

  31. Arsene's Nurse

Ludicrous desperation from Wenger. He’s so frightened he’s put out yet another imbalanced side with the same personel and not rested anyone.

Why not play Campbell and Podolski wide with Rosicky in the hole instead of Cazorla and Ox who had stinkers last week?

Why not play Bellerin at RB and play Chambers at CB with Monreal at LB resting glass legs Gibbs?

We should be rolling Burnley over at home without any thought with our second string.

  32. Val Jay

Yaya the Postman moves straight back into squad & Joel Campbell is dropped.
Playing Arteta,Flamini..,Nacho in central defense instead of Chambers and giving Bellarini a run out at right back against the worst team in the league at home.
Rosciky can’t even get a start.
This clueless french fraud parading as a football manager must be suffering from some undisclosed mental illness.

  33. carts

As I thought – no rest for Welbeck or Sanchez. Wenger really doesn’t have much confidence in the squad does he.

Embarrasing really. Bottom of the fucking league come to emirates but JC, Rosicky and Pod cant get a feature.

  34. Goondawg

They havent kicked ball all week, they dont need a fucking rest. Though ill be very disappointed if Sanchez plays the whole game. Guy has been carrying this team

  35. useroz

If wenger can’t play campbell against. The mighty Burnley sell him in Jan and buy someone you’d play ffs

Lazy players on the pitch; don’t they see what sanchez does?

  36. Arsene's Nurse

We are all over them. I hope this doesn’t turn into one of those games where no matter what we do the woodwork and the Burnley keeper strive to keep us from scoring.

  37. useroz

“…and we don’t need fabregas” wenger should just be sacked for that stupid decision.

Mind you, we still have Sanogoal, Diaby, Flamini….. All French journeymen contributing to our top wages spend.

  38. london gunner

We might have to play walcott on the left wing and sanchez on the right.

Walcott scores a lot of his goals from the left wing just look at the Newcastle game where he got a hatrick

  39. Jim Lahey

How is there only 1 minute of added on time after all of Burnley’s time wasting? I don’t get it, who decides how much added time there is at the end of a half?

Not being able to break the bottom side down at home is a problem…. Sanchez is far above anything else playing for us out there, you can see how annoyed he is with the rest of the team.

Also, how was that handball not seen? What were both the linesman and the ref doing at the time? Obviously not watching the game. It was so obvious.

  40. Al

Arteta and flamini are just mind numbingly boring. Always slowing things down and playing sideways. .

The OX has been lively…that’s the OX I like….direct and always looking forward. ..not playing it safe passing sideways but forcing defenders to make decisions

    Sanchez…..supreme baller

Santi….needs to do more….play quicker….thread more balls forward …get your effing shooting boots on

  41. Wallace

Guardiola story originated in the Standard. one of the journalists there discover ed Wenger & Pep’s contracts end at the same time. genius really.

  42. majestic gooner

we have to face the truth now, there is nothing exciting about watching this arsenal team, wenger has destroyed the whole ethos of the team he built, why play two so called holding midfielders against the team bottom of the league? i sometimes wonder if wenger and the board do not have a scheme whereby they bet against the club winning the league because in any other business this incompetence and lack of drive from those in charge of the club would have been investigated. watching this team , i have no confidence they are going to score intact i am more worried we would concede.

  43. Wallace

apparently he’ll only be there for the length of his contract. but the ‘coming to Arsenal’ bit afterwards is just journalist guff

  44. Jim Lahey

@Wallace – Any idea why he will leave Bayern? Its a bit strange if he has decided already that he will leave!

United and City will probably be sniffing for Guardiola once the time comes.

  45. Wallace

nope, just read somewhere that he’s only planning on staying there for the length of the contract. think he’s keen to try other leagues.

  46. MadeToLoveMagic

been reading Klopps comments about Dortmunds crazy form

They are basically outplaying every team, dominating posession, creating loads of chances missing them and the opposition scores with their first shot everytime

    Sound familiar anyone?
