Young gun signs – Carvalho looking more likely

by .

Dan Crowley signed a new contract. Can I get a wooooo!? Yeah I can, go on, do it at your desk and inexplicably point to god.

Go on… did you do it?

Nice work.

He’s the next super talent coming through the ranks. He reminds me of Jack at that age, exciting, well ahead of his age group with a low centre of gravity (short). He could do well. However, he should learn the rules of being an exciting young talent… knuckle down, work hard, keep your nose clean (metaphorically and literally) and be patient.

Ignore the beach babes, speedos and volleyball until you’re at least 63.

Great news for the clubs production line. Well, great news to our scouting network who pinched him from Villa. I feel far more confident Joncker is looking after his progress.

The Mirror have run with an odd story about Thomas Vermaelen snubbing Arsene Wenger’s offer of a new deal. Really struggling to come to terms with this story. Firstly, Wenger ostracised Vermaelen from the squad last year in he same way he did Bendtner. Instead of rotating him with his two core centre backs he shut him out. Thomas visibly looked disinterested and why wouldn’t he? He had no way in even when Per and Laurent were shattered. Wenger ran Laurent into the ground rather than rotate with a player who is more than capable of being good enough to become our captain in the first place.

In April he let the club know he wanted out. He went to the World Cup, picked up an injury, now we can’t sell him despite interest from Barca and United. Well, he might go, but the injury is hampering things. So now we’re faced with keeping him, so Wenger wants him to sign a new deal so we can get a fee for him next year?

You can see why that wouldn’t go down a dream!

Stories are hitting the web that Carvahlo is more likely than Khedira. Good in my view. We need attributes and fitness. Not sure what the benefit is of signing someone who is 27, injury prone, massively expensive and not quite what we need. I’ve heard great things about Carvahlo, really feel he could make a massive impact on our squad and fill a troublesome gap.

Giroud is excusing his performance on Sunday by stating he’d barely trained. You can’t knock that as an excuse. It’s a fair one. Players won’t get fit properly until at least a month into the season anyway, so I’m not concerned. My main concern is we don’t have he quality up front we need. People meme that Giroud scored more than Rooney over the last two seasons… well, I don’t want Rooney either. That said, he’s a better player for sure. I think the simple fact is, as our squad currently stands, Giroud doesn’t have to worry.

Well, he does, I think Sanchez will play through the middle.

Really feel Mario would be amazing. He’s the best option out there for us. One crazy guy in a squad that boasts very little ego shouldn’t be a problem. Really, I truly believe that every work place deserves a really selfish person of immense talent.

In other news, Usmanov is claiming Arsene Wenger is a genius and now the trophies begin.

Deary me, just what we need. A gee up from Alisher.

I really hope Arsene is a genius. I really hope he does smash it out the park. However, despite all the changes, I still think he’ll come up short at some point. But hey, we’ll see, I’m totally up for Arsene proving me wrong with a Champions League / Premiership double. My concern is that you see coaches like LVG taking innovative approaches to games and I just don’t feel Arsene has that in him these days… nor do I feel many behind have the guts to suggest such approaches.

Just me though. Could be totally wrong. But if I am, that’ll mean Wenger changing massive chunks of his personality and approach.

I’m just being a realist here people, just being real. Street. Whatever you want to call it.

Right, quick one today as I have much work to be cracking on with…

The entire team which played against Monaco lacked spark, which we saw at the Benfica game. And the most dull among our players was Scezsny. I dont remember when he last made 4 saves in a PL game. Everything is wrong with that guy. He should not be starting ahead of the other two. Fuck all experience! What purpose is his 100 games at Arsenal serving if he cannot keep 5 straight clan sheets. Bugger does not make any genuine attempt at all.

  2. Emiratesstroller

    I pose a different question.

Our first Champions League Qualifier is on 19/20 August i.e. 3 days after Crystal
Palace. Do you take a risk on having just 3 CBs available with Mertesacker having
done just 8 days training and Chambers never having played the position at that level?

  3. N5

” Do you take a risk on having just 3 CBs available with Mertesacker having
done just 8 days training and Chambers never having played the position at that level?”

Emirates, what’s happened to Ignasi Miquel? he’s played at that level before, and can’t Debuchy play there also with Chambers playing RB? or vice versa.

My concern is that it will be Nacho in the middle with Kos.

  4. Emiratesstroller

Szczesny received the award for being the goalkeeper with most clean sheets in
EPL last season. The Goalkeeping position is the least of our worries at the moment.

At the moment the critical position is CB with Champions League Qualifier and away game against Everton in the next 17 days. Losing those games is not an option.

  5. Nasri's Mouth

well…. I think there’s an element of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

let’s look at Bendtner, Sagna, Fabianski

Sure we could have (and almost did) sell Bendtner. Never a chance of a new contract, that would have been a big mistake, but we had to keep him because we needed striker cover.

Sagna signed his last contract 5 years ago. None of us know the truth of what was offered to him and when, but 2 seasons ago would have been the most likely time to renew, and we’d have been offering a deal to a player who’d just suffered his 2nd broken leg. A deal that would have cost us an additional £2m in wages a year, plus a signing on fee.

Likewise with Fabianski, had we offered him a new deal 2-3 seasons ago, we’d have ended up paying him more in wages than it’s cost us to bring in a better keeper this summer.

As for the ones we have here, I’d bet we see Vermaelen and Le Coq go, so they wont go for free, Arteta ,Diaby and Flamini’s re-sale value would be less than the addtional cost of re-signing them. Diaby is too big a risk to give a new contract to, and Sanogo wont be out of contract next summer

I think we’ve been caught out before though. We lost a fair bit on RvP because we let him get down to his final year, though again, we’d have had to re-sign him when his injuries were still severely limiting his game playing time. Nasri should have been sorted sooner.
What seems to have changed (so many things have) is that we seem to have learnt from that and are making sure we’re tying down players to contracts when we can

  6. Revving Kevin

Nasri, good comments mate I think you nailed that. Interesting comments from LVG regarding potential signings.

N5, morning I see you are back fighting the good cause 9 hours on!

  7. N5

Lol Kev, I must come across as spikey even when just trying to converse. I honestly am not trying to call Peanuts out, I’m just trying to offer rational balance. 😀

  8. Bergkamplegend

“”Arsenal are planning to swoop for Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.”

    WTF ???
    (ps : good morning Grovers)

  9. peanuts&monkeys

The GG award is quite inappropriate, i must say. He ships in 6 , 5 and 6 in top three games of the season and then he is awarded GG. Fuck all award. Faulty method of evaluation.

  10. Emiratesstroller

    Nasri’s Mouth

Fair argument. I made the point because we seem to land up losing too often players with a potential resale value, but then hold onto them to bitter end.

My personal view is that Arsenal needs now to find by this weekend a CB who is ready to play in Champions League Qualifier. I would not want to take a risk
going into that match with Mertesacker having done just 8 days training and
    Chambers as the only option.

Miguel is not good enough to play for first team. He lacks the pace and skill.

  11. peanuts&monkeys

    @ AshwinGunner August 6, 2014 08:50:48

I translated the headline. its usual junk from media. “Wenger attempts to get this physio and end all injury worries, once and for all” Thats the sense the headline carries.

  12. N5

Peanuts, it’s not a tool of evaluation, it goes to the keeper that lets in the least amount of goals and even with big loses he was that man, so it is what it is.

Let me get this straight though, are you blaming WS1 for those defeats? would any other keeper have kept those goals out?

  13. Bergkamplegend

@Aswin : no abla spanish, sorry.

You takes 6 goals from city, 6 from chelscunt and 5 from liverpool, that’s how you win the GGA.

    Well done Szczesny!! lol

  14. peanuts&monkeys

My losing any plots will not make much difference. But, Scezsny losing the spot will make. When was the last time you felt that Scezsny saved Arsenal’s day? I cant recall any.

  15. Nasri's Mouth

    @Ashwin Gunner

    Only the google translate version.

    Two comments I’d make

    1) It’s interesting that there’s so much interest is being generated in this appointment.
    2) The reaction of the players that know him and his methods, Per, Poldi and Ozil will be interesting. I don’t think we’ve had a comment yet

  16. peanuts&monkeys

N5, “would any other keeper have kept those goals out?” the jury for thsi Q will always be out. But, I will say ‘yes’, someone else with his position under threat could have.

  17. Nasri's Mouth

peanuts&monkeys: When was the last time you felt that Scezsny saved Arsenal’s day?

When was the last time you felt he lost it?

Surely you most have plenty of recent fuck ups from him given you’ve just called him out

  18. Ashwin Gunner

    Nasri’s Mouth

True.. even i find it a bit interesting that his appointment has gernerated interest among fans and newspapers alike. probably every body agrees that Arsenal’s injury pile up is not an accident and something needs to be done resolve it. they were just waiting for Wenger to go ahead resolve this issue as it is a long pending one. and the one which has on many occasions hampered our chances to land a silverware.

and as for Per, Poldi and Ozil, i think they will be the happiest. they have worked under him and they know his methods. from the the traning pics. it looks like everybody is happy having him around.

  19. N5

Peanuts, I’d say the fault falls squarely at the feet of our FBs, who so often left us caught out and in other times our CBs who were falling over each other and leaving areas exposed. Our midfield was weak and getting pressed far beyond anything we could handle.

I think, even if you had Neuer in goal, you’d have seen the same heavy defeats.

As much as I think WS1 is a loud mouth, I have to echo what others are saying on here and suggest he is the least of our problems.

  20. peanuts&monkeys

“Wenger has realised he is not a specialist on fitness and needs to get some one on board”

Lets hope he realizes sooner than later that he is not a specialist of on-pitch football anymore. I would not even support promoting him as chief advisor/mentor and having a TD to do the tactics and strategies match-in/match-out. But, there are Arsenal fans who misplace Arsenal’s limited successes to this arrogant spent-force.

  21. N5

“Szczesny is a comical keeper that’s why he was dropped from the national side”

He was dropped because of his joke telling?

  22. Emiratesstroller

How many goalkeepers do you think we should buy?

We have Szczesny and Ospina who are both competent players with back up of Martinez who gave a solid performance on Saturday.

The only goalkeepers playing currently in EPL who are perhaps better are the
two on Chelsea’s books. Personally I don’t rate Messrs Mignolet,Hart or De Gea as better options than we have got.

  23. N5

NM, it really does and it’s so worrying to me that someone out there is that desperate for attention that they will always take a contrary view just to achieve that.

I really honestly hope he someday gets a friend and I’m not being patronising or insulting, just concerned.

  24. Nasri's Mouth

    He already has one.

Mr Smuggles the chipmunk. He’s perfect. He doesn’t need feeding, is always awake when he is, always agrees with him and most importantly, no-one else can see him.

  25. Alfie

I agree – our goalkeeping side of things is fine.

Our biggest problem is DM and that CF if you ask me.

Anywayssss…… When is the next Le Grove meet up?!

  26. N5

Lol Nasri. I honestly think I’m the closest thing he has to a friend. He said last night, I’m like the company I keep, referring to me being boring like him! I had to explain to him that a person who hangs around you, isn’t company by choice so it doesn’t count!

    Poor, lost little lamb.

  27. N5

Alfie, the last one didn’t go down too good. It was supposed to be the Citeh friendly last season and I think on Toli and Pedders turned up. gambon and Keyser got stuck in doorways to fast food places, Nasri was held captive and Kiyoshi house and I was playing conkers with Marble Hall.

  28. Revving Kevin

Funny about this morning after last nights fun. Mate don’t waste any oxygen on these idiots who are clearly trolling. Just add their names to the list for the podcast we discussed last night 😉

  29. N5

Ha ha Kev, the podcast will have to either run as a series or be about 4 hours long, only talking to each nutter for 5 minutes each. We’re never get them all on otherwise.

  30. Alfie

What a difference a year makes! I mean, lets do it for Spuds game?

Ill leave it in someone’s capable hands! I just wanna see if Gambon can actually walk on water!

  31. N5

“Ill leave it in someone’s capable hands! I just wanna see if Gambon can actually walk on water!”

Pedro might do it Alfie, I’ll ask him!

gambon can’t walk on water, but he can turn it into Peroni.

  32. Leedsgunner

Spot on analysis Nasri @ 0833.

Hopefully Arsene will have a clearer vision of who he wants to keep and sell on now we have the financial muscle to acquire at the top of the market. During the lean years, perhaps Wenger renewed contracts of players he already had because he knew he didn’t have any money to get better — better the devil you know strategy. Perhaps that’s what he REALLY meant (in retrosdpect) when he continually said he would only sign quality… Obviously he couldn’t say, I don’t have money — maybe he was trying to put a brave face on the situation.

    Just a thought.

  33. azed

I know you are the guardian of le-grove and slaying trolls comes natural to you but surely you can let one go

    **hint Marble

  34. Nasri's Mouth

Yep, easier to retain players when you can afford to offer wages that are similar to whats being offered elsewhere.

Still tricky to know how a player will develop or how he’ll manage his injuries of course, and that’s where we need to be spot on

  35. N5

Marble, let’s play a game, where you take the role of a normal person who has a normal conversation and tell me which extraordinary players you would have liked to have seen come in this year.

Your track record hasn’t been great, you told me and Eagle that Campbell was a better player than Henry because he’s scored in a Euro final and you said Gus Ceaser was your favourite player of all time, so I’m excited to see who you suggest.

  36. N5

Azed I wish it was that simple, but I enjoy it with Marble. It’s a relationship that we’ve carefully nurtured and cultivated over the past 3 years and we’re just getting to the crescendo.

  37. Leedsgunner

Although I would love an out and out CF — if it means getting Reus next summer (to follow on our blockbuster signing pattern) I’ll wait until the summer. Much more pressing is the CB situation and the DM situation (even more so if we are bringing in a new CB).

On another note, I know Park Chu-Young might make us wary of South Korean strikers but what about Heung Min-Son?

One of the very best in the Bundesliga at the moment and he was one of the standout players in the WC for the national squad…. fantastic pace and trickery on the ball… and he’s a specialist on the problematic lefthand side.

  38. N5

“Giroud, Podolski, Arteta, Flamini all flops and signed by Wenger.”

Henry, Pires, Fabregas, Petit, Ljunberg, RvP, Viera all stars and signed by Wenger.

  39. Bergkamplegend

    @Marble : don’t touch to Poldi thanks.

For many here he’s a “flop” == >> but it’s only because wenger has never trusted him.

  40. Leedsgunner

Podolski – such a flop — I bet he feels sorry for himself when he polishes his new WC winners medal… because you know that’s what flops deserve.

He’s been mishandled by Wenger. Although unlike Arshavin, he’s still remained cheerful and content without airing his dirty laundry in public — a consummate professional — and if we don’t bring in a proper striker and Giroud starts missing barn doors again.

  41. Ashwin Gunner

“Giroud, Podolski, Arteta, Flamini all flops and signed by Wenger.”

none of the above are shit…

    1) Giroud — he is a typical striker. but not suited for EPL

    2) Podolski – he used to score for fun when he was in Bundesliga. Wenger is no fool to bring him in and pay in 100k a week. Although its partly Wenger’s fault and partly his, to what has happened with him.

    3) Arteta — He was our best signing of that season. we needed creativity and Arteta gave us that. using him as DMF has back fired, but he is definitely not shit. you cannot judge a horse by its ability to climb a tree.

4 Flamini – he is a hot head. He is DMF. but gives away a lot of fouls. but when he does his job, he does it well.

    That’s my two cents…

  42. karaul

sorry but Arteta and creativity? maybe i was watching some paralell matches.

I like Podolski as a person. It must be great to have him in the dressing room. But clearly he´s very lazy and does not want to fight for his place. Why exactly he isn´t already back in training? He barely played during World Cup. Draxler is already training because he wants to be helpful to his team. What is Podolski doing? Eating schwarma?

Giroud is suited for french league? Maybe. I don´t blame him. Again – it´s not his fault he is our n.1 striker

Flamini should be our 2nd DM for season or two. From all these 4 signings this is the only one that makes at least some sense

Giroud is suited for french league? Maybe. I don´t blame him. It´s not his fault he is our n.1 striker

  43. Gregg

I don’t hold with this Podolski mismanaged thing at all. Truth is Germany still have to rely on recalling the ever aging Klose. Podolski has never been trusted as their ‘number 9’ even when he was whacking them in for Cologne. He is a guy who doesn’t make the most of his talent.

  44. Ashwin Gunner

Arteta was good going forward. I am not saying he replaced Cesc perfectly. but he had the ability to hold the ball and his passing was exceptional. I am talking of 2011.

Since 2012, he has been playing as DMF (the place where song used to play). He is not a good DMF player. but he is definitely a much much better player higher up the line. he is not Shit.

  45. Gregg

Arteta gets a lot of stick which is undeserved.

He is an extremely selfless player that will play anywhere for the good of the team.

  46. N5

Ashwin, you’re not wrong RE Arteta mate. He is in the Telegraphs top 10 Arsenal signings for the very reason you suggested.

  47. karaul

on the other hand – chambers, ospina, debuchy – all very good signings. Sachnez -great. We are short of 2 – 3 players now.

  48. Northbanker

Back from holiday and great not be following every rumour. Same playing squad as when I left!

Today is my birthday and I’m hoping Wenger will get on with my next birthday present – buying Carvalho to shore up our midefiled

Persnally imo that will represent a great summer. Giroud can lead the line and will be eventually eased out by Campbell. It wont be perfect but we will get a marquee striker for next year

  49. Bergkamplegend

” He is a guy who doesn’t make the most of his talent.”

    Ok… so what about L’Oreal ?? lol

  50. Ashwin Gunner

I agree mate. . people only see Arteta playing badly. but what they dont realise is, its not his position. same like Ramsey. Ramsey was very bad when played on the wings. and all everybody wanted was to sel lhim. but now he is our best player. and fans are going ga ga over him..

Arteta reads the game very fast and his positioning is very very good. but he is not a DMF. he should not be the one covering our back 4. If Wenger plays him higher up, we can see him controlling the game…

  51. gary

Our keepers shit..the players we have signed are shit.seriously you couldnt make it up some of the bollocks people write on here.. think i’ll stick to just reading the post

  52. TS

Is the server down or something else wrong with the website?
    No post since 11 40?
I actually have to work now and I blame you guys for that.

  53. Emiratesstroller

Same old Wenger Sky reporting him as saying ‘with 3 weeks to go in transfer
window we have a big squad. The implication is that he may not buy any additional players.

We do not need to make wholesale changes, but we do need to bring in DM plus additional CB if Vermaelen leaves.

I wish that Wenger would for once be decisive when everyone including the
kitchen sink know that we are short in the key defensive positions.

It will be fascinating to see the teams he puts out in next three games and how he will cope in absence of Mertesacker at the back. Our cover is non existent unless he plans seriously to put Monreal on substitutes bench as cover CB.

Can anyone imagine him playing this weekend against Man City?
