5 Best moments of the World Cup so far… help

by .

It’s not often you see an epic 0-0 played out in a World Cup, but that’s what occurred last night in the Germany vs Algeria game. Some contest. An off colour Germany battered for large parts of the game. Fair play to Algeria, they didn’t look like second class footballing citizens. I’d say if it weren’t for poor decision making in the final third (and there was a lot), the Africans would have nailed that game!

As it happened, another late extra time game took place, but a smart finish from Shurle basically killed extra time. A shame if you’re into the whole underdog thing, good times if you love Germans.

I love Germans.

Shame Ozil was garbage again, he’s a bit of a lost soul at the moment.

I didn’t catch much of the France Nigeria game as I was working, but I understand Griezmann was the difference again. He’s a gem of a player, sad that I expect he’ll end up at somewhere like PSG who want all the French players.

Tonight I believe it’s Argentina vs Switzerland, and oddly fascinating game for some reason. Kind of like it’d be odd to put chicken in an English fry up. Odd, but not odd enough to not give it a go. I’m looking forward to Shaquiri play, he’s a super player, and he scored a hatrick in the last game. I’d imagine he might be available this summer have spent most of last season not playing. Then there’s Lio Messi, three MoM performances, but he’s not being hyped, it’s like we’re all bored of him… RODRIGUEZ is on the lips of everyone.

The other game is Belgium vs USA. I have a feeling the US are going to be put to sword tonight, but one thing is for sure, all the ‘Belgium could be underdogs’ has fallen by the wayside…

I have been asked what the best World Cup moments have been so far, I wondered if you could help me fill some gaps. In no particular order…

Suarez bite: One of the best players on the planet, in his prime, in form bites his way out of the world cup into a 4 month total football ban

Costa Rican Penalties: The players have been nothing short of exceptional so far this tournament, against Greece, they were dying on their feet, losing focus, barely able to run. Penalties arrive and all focus is regained to deliver 5 perfect spot kicks.

Robin Header: A shame it came so early but the Robin 18 yard header has to be one of the most spectacular headers ever witnessed on the grandest stage. It showed technique, awareness and creativity under pressure. Exceptional redefined.

French Penalty: In one of the first games of the tournament, the French thought they’d scored a goal the Honduras keeper had scrambled out. Goal line tech came into force and proved it was a goal. Hopefully one of the most understated ‘big’ moments of the tournament. Undoubted value delivered through technology, hopefully the tipping point for wider integration in the game.

James Rodriguez: The most expensive player you didn’t know. Right? The Colombian number 10 who won the Golden Ball for Porto, moved for Β£40m to Monaco to be described as ‘perhaps the best player in Ligue One’ has had so little attention preworld cup it borders on ludicrous. Not now, the main man has bulldozed his name all over this World Cup with beautiful assists and one of the most incredible World Cup goals EVER seen.

Feel free to add your own my darlings…

There’s not much your don’t know about Arsenal transfers today, so I’ll leave it at that. Short and sweet, like a shetland pony or a shot of Amaretto.

I did use a wink emoticon I prescisy used so you knew it was a joke.

I think we actually agreed on something can’t remember exactly what it was.

I find myself 50/50 with your comments as in some of them I disagree some of them I agree with in a big way

  2. Nasri's Mouth

Higuain was a bit different, that one looked as though we’d agreed a fee too. There was discussion between the clubs, it was reported.

Whereas with Aurier, we’ve heard nothing from either club until today

    INdeed London

From what ive seen he looks like a player we could do with,,, , your observations of him seem good

and as i said to bamford im worries if we sign sanchez we wont get a specialist striker ,,

  4. London gunner

Oh and the irony is I actually agree with you in that he is limited just for different reasons to yours… I think his a skilful player he just doesn’t have the imagination or creativity of a playmaking g winger like nasri but nor does he have the movement and awareness to get into goal scoring positions like say Walcott or griezmann

  5. Al

Haha djourou cracks me up as a player.. One minute looks so composed on the ball, next minute he looks like bambi on ice

  6. London gunner

Shaqiri is skilful but can be quite ineffective because of his movement. He doesn’t make enough runs of the shoulder for an explosive winger

His inconsistent can be great or go missing

  7. Nasri's Mouth

Agreed, every time he gets the ball, the Swiss fans must be shaking. Weirdly he’s done ok, but he looks like an accident waiting to happen

  8. Bamford13

Wow, London. It turns out you ARE a troll.

Rather than replying to me, you reply to MTML, who didn’t actually “catch me out,” for, as I explained, I’ve watched Shaqiri play throughout the WC and when he was younger (and quite good).

You then proceed to respond to my points, not to me, but to MTML! This is a new variation on the straw man argument.

Nothing you said re the two players counters what I said at all. Not at all. You’ve talked around what I said, not to it.

And by the way, there’s no such word as “allot”. It’s “a lot” — two words — and your grade school teacher should’ve taught you that. πŸ˜‰

  9. Klauspoppe

    Messi make movements?

Clearly people haven’t seen Messi play regularly in the last two years. He’s off the ball movement is non existent. He drifts around outside the box to collect the ball and dictate play on the ball. His on the ball skills are unparalleled.

With a player like Messi the team should be playing to his strengths and open space by spreading play with their off the ball movement.

    Palacio lmfao.

  10. Bamford13

You’re right! You did use a wink emoticon. My sincere apologies.

Ignore my snarky grammar barb. I’m being difficult this morning. πŸ˜‰

  11. London gunner

I wrote two comments you one explain that I was joking and that I had used a winky face before

The second comment was saying how I agree his limited just for different reasons

Oh and I was responding to mtlm do you wish me to ignore him or post a joint comment to you both

Just chill dude I was joking before and you got the wrong end of the stick lets just leave it at that

  12. Al

Jess I forgot they had biglia. ..why on earth is gago starting ahead of him. …always looked good for lazio

  13. tunnygriffboy

Argentina will win the WC after this. Rather them or anyone other than Brazil or Robben. Again the underdogs work so hard and only just miss out. Their luck has to change. C’mon the USA !

  14. Klauspoppe

More curious of Argentina playing against a team with more attacking intent than Swiss, Iran lol. These guys just crowd out their penalty box and yet the Argies still had decent amount of attempts at goal.

  15. WengerEagle

Fuck Argentina through by the skin of their teeth!

Messi magic saves them yet again.

I still expect them to at least reach the final, no disrespect to US or Belgium but they’ll beat either side and I fancy them to beat the Netherlands in the Semi’s.

None of the big sides have impressed in the knockouts so far barring Colombia.

  16. Wengerites be damned!

LOL! I knew when Argentina faced a team with a bit of quality in defense they would suffer. Some Argentinians saying before the game they would win comfortably…I told them it would be a tough game but they didn’t believed.
Bosnia, Iran, Nigeria ‘grupo de risa’ of this WC. Simply pathetic that in a WC a group like this can exist. Had the Argies faced Mexico,Colombia or Chile they would have been eliminated.
Good thing they will face Holland in Semi if they beat Belgium/USA. They have an easier route than Brasil since the group phase. The real test will be only in semifinal against Holland.

  17. tunnygriffboy

Well my American fellow grovers, the moment of truth. How big is this game at home? Will it have a huge following and is it the start of football becoming mainstream?

No Beckerman ?? tonight, Cameron instead ?

  18. karim

you have to remember france was 5 goals ahead of the swiss after an hour
    just saying

he s not the devil lol
first player he has ever injured and went to say sorry into the naija dressing room
he s very agressive but never wants to hurt he s no de jong

  19. Goonergirl

You ready for the match? I’m cheering for the US. Could be a tight match but got a feeling they could edge through.

  20. Goonah

I rate the Belgium keeper Courtois very high. He is so calm and assured.

    USA – Belgium 0-2

Sorry to all american gooners, hope I’m wrong for your sake πŸ™‚

  21. Dissenter

My patriotic zeal says USA 5 Belgium 3 on penalties

My clear head tells me USA 0 Belgium 3

The Belgians are better, man for man but I’m not sure they’ve played a team as united and determined.
That said, the referee will determine this. I he he lets the game get physical we win. If he’s gets picky, we are done.

  22. MidwestGun

Hugely nervous. Not expecting much. Altidore out much more important. Dempsey not really a lone striker. There will be huge viewing parties. It won’t matter either way as far as jumpstarting mainstream following. Long process. Oh and about 120,000 pop.

  23. Nasri's Mouth

I’m hoping for a USA win.

    Love their enthusiasm

Belgium have been just about the most boring side out there

I never believed the Belgian hype

Would be good if one underdog went through

(USA are technically the underdog here I guess)

  24. WindyCityArse

Omg – Alexis Lalas on espn calling Bradley a world class defensive midfielder. Why so blinkered?

  25. MidwestGun

    Ggirl –
Thanks, I’m ready. Ya could be defensive match. Any victory score wise is good. Lol. Hopefully Fabian Johnson (RB) can get forward. He has looked dangerous.

  26. NYCgooner

Belgium is miles ahead of us in terms of ability but hopefully the effort and team spirit creates some miracles today.

  27. MidwestGun

    Eagle –
Altidore is rubbish for Club, not country. He opens up space for Dempsey to make runs like first goal against Ghana. Also, he is a holdup outlet. Not Dempsey so much.

  28. WengerEagle

Fair enough you watch them all the time so you’re a better judge of his ability as a player.

Johnson and Jones will be crucial to your chances I reckon.

  29. Goonergirl

Lol I rather not make a prediction. Safer that way. Then I really can’t jinx it lol. The fullbacks for US are going to have to have a really good game

  30. kwik fit

Jackson Martinez says “As a child I cheered for Arsenal, they play a game that suits me. If I had the occasion to play there, I would say yes.”

  31. Al

Shad forsythe. …why all these American players getting injured lol. I thought he was our fitness saviour.

Jesus ….Murphy saying the fitness routine for USA is very intense with lots of sprints……

  32. MadeToLoveMagic

oh yeah it was in the 20’s when they banned it wasnt it? πŸ˜‰

USA looking the better side! Reckon there’s too many egos in the Belgian team, they coasted qualifying,so now they are up against it there’s not much unity

  33. Al

Dempsey needs a bit more support up top..

USA need to play down the left and quickly switch to the right because their is acres of space on the right for them due to hazard not tracking the right back

  34. Radio Raheem

All seen the kid for all of 20 mins but I’ll confidently say he’s far better than Jenkinson.

  35. BillikenGooner

I think Klinsmann made a mistake not starting Beckerman. It’s one of the reasons the U.S. can’t get and keep possession.

  36. Radio Raheem

Danny Murphy needs to shut up about attacking players defending. He was the worst at it when he played.
