5 Best moments of the World Cup so far… help

by .

It’s not often you see an epic 0-0 played out in a World Cup, but that’s what occurred last night in the Germany vs Algeria game. Some contest. An off colour Germany battered for large parts of the game. Fair play to Algeria, they didn’t look like second class footballing citizens. I’d say if it weren’t for poor decision making in the final third (and there was a lot), the Africans would have nailed that game!

As it happened, another late extra time game took place, but a smart finish from Shurle basically killed extra time. A shame if you’re into the whole underdog thing, good times if you love Germans.

I love Germans.

Shame Ozil was garbage again, he’s a bit of a lost soul at the moment.

I didn’t catch much of the France Nigeria game as I was working, but I understand Griezmann was the difference again. He’s a gem of a player, sad that I expect he’ll end up at somewhere like PSG who want all the French players.

Tonight I believe it’s Argentina vs Switzerland, and oddly fascinating game for some reason. Kind of like it’d be odd to put chicken in an English fry up. Odd, but not odd enough to not give it a go. I’m looking forward to Shaquiri play, he’s a super player, and he scored a hatrick in the last game. I’d imagine he might be available this summer have spent most of last season not playing. Then there’s Lio Messi, three MoM performances, but he’s not being hyped, it’s like we’re all bored of him… RODRIGUEZ is on the lips of everyone.

The other game is Belgium vs USA. I have a feeling the US are going to be put to sword tonight, but one thing is for sure, all the ‘Belgium could be underdogs’ has fallen by the wayside…

I have been asked what the best World Cup moments have been so far, I wondered if you could help me fill some gaps. In no particular order…

Suarez bite: One of the best players on the planet, in his prime, in form bites his way out of the world cup into a 4 month total football ban

Costa Rican Penalties: The players have been nothing short of exceptional so far this tournament, against Greece, they were dying on their feet, losing focus, barely able to run. Penalties arrive and all focus is regained to deliver 5 perfect spot kicks.

Robin Header: A shame it came so early but the Robin 18 yard header has to be one of the most spectacular headers ever witnessed on the grandest stage. It showed technique, awareness and creativity under pressure. Exceptional redefined.

French Penalty: In one of the first games of the tournament, the French thought they’d scored a goal the Honduras keeper had scrambled out. Goal line tech came into force and proved it was a goal. Hopefully one of the most understated ‘big’ moments of the tournament. Undoubted value delivered through technology, hopefully the tipping point for wider integration in the game.

James Rodriguez: The most expensive player you didn’t know. Right? The Colombian number 10 who won the Golden Ball for Porto, moved for £40m to Monaco to be described as ‘perhaps the best player in Ligue One’ has had so little attention preworld cup it borders on ludicrous. Not now, the main man has bulldozed his name all over this World Cup with beautiful assists and one of the most incredible World Cup goals EVER seen.

Feel free to add your own my darlings…

There’s not much your don’t know about Arsenal transfers today, so I’ll leave it at that. Short and sweet, like a shetland pony or a shot of Amaretto.

HAVE A GOOD DAY.

Nothing about Puma Pedro? Is that an away strip on the front page of the website or is it just training stuff?

  2. Romford Pele

The only German player that has been fully on job this tournament has been Muller. Low is just ruining things with his dodgy system man.

  3. Zaco

    suares incident
spain crashing out of group stage
england not winning a single match
    goal line tech
    james rodriguez

  4. OyVaGoy

I’m an irrational défender of BFG and Ozil.

Neither have blown me away in this tournament, though.

I actually quite enjoyed Suarez’s two goals v England, despite.

Basically, everything other than Glenn Hoddle’s camel toe has been awesome.

  5. Gilo

Very Strange performance from germany, strange game all round really. Germany france quarter should be amazing

  6. Herkules

Tonight will see the US continue the strong run of Western Hemisphere teams. I also wouldn’t be surprised in Costa Rica topped the Dutch – leaving only one European team in the Semis

  7. Dream10

The directness of Schurrle, the energy of Khedira (both substitutes) and the determination of Muller made the difference. Never gave him the credit he deserved. Muller is an UNBELIEVABLE player! With the injuries to Mustafi and Schweinsteiger, I would love to see Germany go to five at the back, especially if Hummels returns.

Nigeria like Algeria were beaten by the better team. But they had a very good tournament. Ahmed Musa played better than I expected, Now needs to kick on and be more consistent, starting with the next Nations Cup. Eneyama performs heroics every match, and only Sweeper Keeper Neuer and Keylor Navas at his level this World Cup.

Big big match for King Benz against the Germans at the Maracana. Griezmann will show up and show out though. Will be a coming out party for him. No doubt about that.

  8. Romford Pele

I’m still wondering why Low doesn’t play Durm or Grosskreutz. It’s like bar Hummels he has a thing against Dortmund players.

  9. Bergkamplegend

“I love Ozil but he really wasn’t good.”

Sam thing that we saw at arsenal in the second half of the season : the guy is physically totally out of order.

  10. N5

Well done Ozil for scoring the winner! bit of a meh game, but he didn’t drop his head and he went on to score the important goal.

    U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A. tonight!!

  11. Romford Pele

“The directness of Schurrle, the energy of Khedira (both substitutes) and the determination of Muller made the difference”

Was needed – Germany were playing too one-paced. You saw how they began to create more chances when they changed the dynamic of the team. Too many players who want to come to the ball rather than looking to spin in behind. Reus is a big miss.

  12. Wallace

i thought Ozil was good for an hour but then drifted out of it. definitely very low on confidence. hopefully the goal will help him. Müller on the other hand is indispensable. Germany’s high line was crazy, and Algeria were fantastic.

  13. Romford Pele

“Is Nueuer a sweeper also?? I lost count of d number of times he bailed out his defence”

Has to be with that suicidal high line the Germans were playing. I’d be very surprised if they played that high up against France.

  14. nuudles

I though Ozil was very Gervinho-like yesterday. Showed some great touches, good runs on and off the ball, but for the greatest part his final ball (be it assist attemp or decision to shoot) was lacking.

He showed some glimpses, and I think we all know that, with the right squad surrounding him, he is the best midfielder in the game when he is switched on. So bottom line: give him something to work with Arsene!!

  15. Wallace

“I’m still wondering why Low doesn’t play Durm or Grosskreutz. It’s like bar Hummels he has a thing against Dortmund players.”

yeah, the four cb’s thing is crazy. just stick fuckin’ Lahm back there, fer chrissakes.

  16. TheBayingMob

Moment of the World Cup for me was Blatters fat cunt face being shown on a big screen and getting booed by the whole stadium. Fat cheating fat cunt. Fat cunt. Cheating corrupt cunt. A cunt. Qatar. What a silly fat bribe taking cunt.

  17. nuudles

Neuer is an absolute beast. Someone should tell him that he cannot rush a player advancing from the halfway line when it is time for penalties?

I also thought both our CBs were fantastic last night…

  18. Dream10

    Romford Pele

    Germany 5-3-2 Neuer: Lahm,Mertesacker,Hummels,Boateng,Durm:Khedira,Grosskreutz,Kroos:
    Schurrle, Muller

    – They need to match France’s energy in MF w/ Cabaye,Matuidi,Pogba
    – Kroos can create and Schurrle,Muller will trouble the backline
    – Gotze,Podolski,Oezil subs

    Thoughts?

  19. Romford Pele

“Surely Germany lacks that dynamism as well”

They don’t lack it; Low just chooses not to use it. He’s trying to recreate Pep’s Bayern/Barca and the Spanish side.

Reus is obviously a big miss
    Bender brothers absent
    No Gundogan
    Not playing Draxler
    Schurrle on the bench

  20. TheBayingMob

Neuer is amazing. No two words about it. Probably the best keeper on the planet right now. I offered to buy my mate (from Germany) a new c class Merc if Germany lost. However brave Algeria were that just wasn’t going to happen.

  21. Romford Pele

Dream – not sure Low will ever go 5 at the back; he’ll see it as conceding that Germany are inferior to France. Certainly needs to add some more dynamism into the side.

Lahm at FB. Bring Khedira in. Khedira, Kroos and Schweini is good. Still fancy the French midfield over that though.

That said, Matuidi is lucky he won’t be missing that game. Nasty challenge from him yesterday.

  22. Bero

The other thing from yesterday was the performance of arsenal players in the French game… And it went how we already know they are as players…

Kos – excellent game and one of the best defenders in Europe

Giroud – plodding, slow, terrible ball control, heavy touches and had to be dragged off.

It’s actually shocking he’s starting for France at all. Benzema and greizmann link up far better and are far more dynamic and clinical. Giroud should just be an option off the bench if they’re desperate…. Kind of like he should be at arsenal!

  23. Josip Skoblar

    Pedro
Spot on! The underrated Griezmann made a hell of a difference last night. When he replaced Giroud, the French team started to click and anonymous players like Benzeman started to be a threat.
Congratulations to Deschamps who made the change at the right time. Deschamps has been having the perfect tournament so far. Very impressed by his calmness and mental strenghth 😉

  24. Dream10

Wackhim Lurv overthinking. Loves the false #9 like Pep. On a sidenote, it seemed that Guardiola was disappointed that Lewandowski would join as he loves the strikerless formation.

Give Lewandowski one year at Bayern. Which English club will splash the cash in 2015 for his services?

  25. Ashwin Gunner

Hope yesterday’s performance by Giroud is an eye opener for Wenger and he goes on to buy a decent striker, who doesnt fumble on the ball and fall down like 7 year old girl..

  26. GoonerGaunty73

Re The launch of Puma, I’ve not bought an Arsenal top for years as I have to keep 2 sons kitted up. But I did think of getting the new Puma one, have they got a style that will fit a 40 yr old starting to display the signs of to much larger and good food over the years?? They are stupidly tight and just wont look good on us older chaps on the terraces.
PS Theres a video of Saurez doing the rounds on facebook (cant find it on youtube) tak a look, he really is a dirty ***********!! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=238641883012791&set=vb.205459936330986&type=2&theater

  27. tunnygriffboy

Agree re Matuidi. Time to use TV evidence to ban tackles like that. Onazi went off and Nigeria midfield became porous without him. Retrospective punishments have to come in for violent conduct and simulation.

It’s a farce. Robben admits to diving yet FIFA take no action. A great example for young kids to follow. Cheating is ok and cheats prosper. Ridiculous.

  28. Romford Pele

“They are stupidly tight and just wont look good on us older chaps on the terraces.”

That’s always been the PUMA style mate so i’d avoid it if you don’t think it’ll flatter you!

  29. Scravaldio

Not heard of James Rodriguez? Seriously the best young winger to come out of the Portuguese league and no one has heard of him!
I suppose no one has heard of Juan manual iturbe the next potential di Maria or messi?
I really hope the Arsenal scouts are more on the pulse, ahh who am I kidding this is the scouting network that thought park and Santos were good enough maybe I should work for the Arsenal.
Personally think the media blackout on the riots in Brazil while the WC takes place is the biggest highlight/crime of the tournament and it shows which of our news corporations are actually bothered about the real news and not lining there own pockets.
Oh it seems all of them ahh so our media are just as easily bought as any other in any other country wow and there is me thinking FIFA was corrupt and underhanded when our own media and government are equally complicit except when it goes against them like Russia hmmm democracy can yer smell it?

  30. Wallace

Benzema was obviously sulking in the first half yesterday. Great player, but shame he couldn’t just get on with it. didn’t give Giroud much support.

  31. tunnygriffboy

Giroud gets so much stick on here it’s boring. It’s not his fault he’s not Falcao. Give the guy a break and blame the manager’s who select him. It may be that Griezemann and Benzema got nore space yesterday after Onazi went off. Giroud wasn’t great yesterday but in his other two appearances he did well.

  32. Dream10

    Romford

Matuidi and also Giroud being accused of throwing an elbow again L’Oreal reverted back to type again with his wastefulness.

  33. Vintage Gun

Cameroon are investigating SEVEN of their own team over match fixing their group games…

Whats worrying about this is that couple weeks back one of our African posters said the same thing and got called a conspiracy nut job!!!

    Sad times if true

  34. Josip Skoblar

Bad news regarding Serge Aurier: it seems that PSG are on course to sign him. #petrodollars.

  35. Vintage Gun

“Is Nueuer a sweeper also?? I lost count of d number of times he bailed out his defence”

I thought he looked more of a holding midfielder to me but with loew’s tatics who knows?

  36. Romford Pele

“Bad news regarding Serge Aurier: it seems that PSG are on course to sign him. #petrodollars.”

    *sighs*

  37. GoonerGaunty73

Romford – I’ll look like David of little britain, I’m taking a huge swerve and seeing as we are bringing out 3 kits in one hit, I couldnt afford my own one anyway!!!.

Giroud was woeful last night, we must make some movement this week int he market – Players are out of the tournament now, no more excuses Wenger

  38. Josip Skoblar

    Romford
You must be disappointed. I am too. We’ll have to settle for Debuchy… or Jenkinson! 😉

  39. Dream10

    Josip Skoblar

Oezil has been average and Gotze has been below average,

PSG were linked to Debuchy all year. They can afford any right back they want. Aurier first choice for them or did they want Debuchy first?

  40. Scott

I noted that the little Turk did not join in singing ‘Deutschland Uber Alle’ with the rest of the plodders And despite scoring a late goal, Ozil looked anything but world class . It is all about himself though really with Ozil , he will be happier when he ends up at Galatasaray or Fenerbahce.

  41. Roaaary

Watched the Germany game from a German pub in Basel last night. Hilarious watching them compared to us English and shows why their players play with freedom.

When players have the ball away there was no shouting or effing and blinding (I don’t speak German so they actually may have been). There was also an insanely fat guy with a mullet who jumped up on the table to celebrate every manuel neuer save and clearance.

Compare this with an English pub and the negativity throughout a game and the stick the players get. No wonder they play with fear

  42. Scott

Well done Wenger for turning down a world class Arsenal legend to keep average crap like Ozil, Cazorla, Rosciky lol.

  43. tunnygriffboy

Debuchy is not the worst. For excitment it was Aurier for me. Perhaps they wanted experience . Ah well, will cope with that if we strengthen well up top. Notice Lars Bender mentioned again. Just wish we would start tying players down. WTF are Law and Gazidis ?

  44. Vintage Gun

“Bad news regarding Serge Aurier: it seems that PSG are on course to sign him”

Don’t say that mate. Even if its true just don’t say it

  45. GoonerGaunty73

Good to see the Fifa sanctions are really hitting PSG’s “buy who we fucking want for stupid money” strategy hard!

I was impressed with Aurier, think he would suit our style of play really well, although Debuchy would work too. We are dithering again, it’s all got a familiar feeling………..

  46. Scott

I’ve been proved right again that Benzema and Ozil are not world class and Adam Lallana is certainly better than the 42m flop

  47. Roaaary

@scott – great timing with your comment mate. Shows the English for what we are!!!

Ozil wasn’t his best last night but you miss the point of him. He keeps play moving fluidly and always finds a pass.

You also can’t claim that the man with the most assists in la liga is all about himself.

    A comment wrapped in opinion

  48. Savage

Giroud wasn’t great, but part of it was a confusion over roles. I don’t think it’s helping France that they still can’t decide whether to go with Griezmann or Giroud. They should stick to one plan and push it through. Either way.

I personally think that a Giroud-Benzema partnership could work nicely, with Giroud playing the target man and laying off for Benzema to shoot – each doing what they’re good at. And make no mistake, Giroud’s link play is up with the best in the business. But someone has to score the goals, and that’s Benzema, and clearly not Giroud.

  49. Roaaary

Serge Aurier looks the real deal but the fact he will disappear to the African nations is an issue. For that reason debuchy is a better bet.

Newcastles statement that a deal is not completed shows that it is close

  50. Vintage Gun

    @Roaaary

If Aurier going to the ACN for a few weeks is the problem then what’s the use of having Jenkinson and to a lesser extent Bellerin?

  51. Thank you and goodnight

I’m a massive Ozil fan but I’m beginning to get really concerned we’ve bought a flop to be honest with you. We’ve excused his performances by claiming he needs time to settle or the quality of players at Arsenal not what he’s used to etc etc. But Germany have quality players yet he looks a passenger in all honesty. Really not impressed with him at moment.

  52. Roaaary

There’s no point in having them haha. No bellerin may turn out to be good but I haven’t seen enough to comment.

I love jenks but that’s because he is a gooner. As a player he hasn’t stepped up and alongside mertesacker we look weak

  53. Maverick

“I’m a massive Ozil fan but I’m beginning to get really concerned we’ve bought a flop to be honest with you. We’ve excused his performances by claiming he needs time to settle or the quality of players at Arsenal not what he’s used to etc etc. But Germany have quality players yet he looks a passenger in all honesty. Really not impressed with him at moment.”

Germany are playing the BM/Barca way at this moment. There is practically no pace in the team. I would not just say Ozil, but every attacking midfielder is struggling in the german side. You can have quality players, but if you play the wrong system then they will struggle.

Gotze, Schweinsteiger, Kroos & Khedira (box to box) are all struggling as they need more movement in front of them and not on the sides. These guys need a center forward of quality.

Bayern play Mandzukic & Muller in most of the games and this helps them. Even in their prime days, Barcelona had a Eto running through the middle.

  54. Drey

    TYAG
Exactly my thoughts. I mean I am also a massive Ozil fan and wants him to do well, but the more I watch him play for the Arsenal and Germany,he does look like a player they can do without.. He can’t complete a dribble without being shrugged off the ball. He loses confidence too easily and fades away in games.
I was one of the few Arsenal fans who where not impressed when Wenger made him out top signing last summer.. A £45m Suarez and we would have been laughing..

Giroud is a flop as always.. no question about that

  55. gambon

So Wenger wanted to sell Campbell

i said this over and over, he was in the shop window in Greece.

Hopefully we sell him any way.

Havent seen much that makes me want him at Arsenal.

  56. Willie

Neuer would make a better outfield player than nearly half the players out there.

I think Pedro missed to highlight at least one spectacular save in the many that’ve been made in this tournament. Ochoa, Rais, Enyeama…

  57. Scott

All of you who said we didn’t need Cesc, would rather Ozil played then him, are you ready to admit how wrong you are? What a terrible decision turning down a world class Arsenal legend

  58. gambon

“I’m a massive Ozil fan but I’m beginning to get really concerned we’ve bought a flop to be honest with you.”

    Hmmmm, i think the same.

Good player, but a £43m player? Nope.

  59. gunnergetyou

Ozil’s performances have become a bit of an obsession on here and in the media. He wasn’t at his best but i honestly dont think he was as bad as everyone is saying. Not when you compare his performance to any of the other players in the German midfield. I thought that Kroos, Schwienstieger and gozte were all worse than him.

  60. gambon

I like Lallana, rally do, have been raving about him since he was in League 1, and said we shouldve got him instead of Chamberlain.

But £25m in ridiculous, he wont improve Liverpool at all, and thats a lot of money to spend to not improve.

  61. Bergkamplegend

” You can have quality players, but if you play the wrong system then they will struggle.”

Arsène if you read us… lol

  62. Bergkamplegend

“What an absolute mistake Wenger has made.”

Not the first, not the last == >> 3 more years lol

  63. Jeff

I have to disagree with the negative assessment on Ozil.

The thing with him is that people miss the simple things he does – like finding the player to pass to very quickly. He isn’t a cut and thrust, in your face player. He isn’t a dribbler doing intricate step-overs or shimmies. That’s not the type of player he is. The most important skill he has is to see the correct pass and execute it. He is first and foremost the person who assists others to score and he does that very well.

Some people look at the things that he’s not good at and conclude he isn’t worth £42m. It’s all about what he “can” do rather than what he can’t.

  64. Scott

Do you all still think Ozil is good as Fabregas? lol some even claimed him to be better lol. Do you all realise we turned the actual best no 10 in the world who is an Arsenal legend?

  65. Scott

The solution is to play Rambo in the no 10 position and buy a DM and B2B like Schniederlin and Lars Bender

    Schniederlin Bender
    ———-Ramsey

  66. Thank you and goodnight

    @Jeff
Maybe mate, but for 45 million you expect someone who can change the course of a big game…..not go into hiding. I’ve stuck up for Ozil all of last season, go back on any of my qoutes on him and you will see I’ve never been negative towards him until now. I’m just starting to worry it was a lot of money spent on a player who goes missing in the big games.

  67. Bergkamplegend

“I’m just starting to worry it was a lot of money spent on a player who goes missing in the big games.”
    SPOT ON!!

  68. Radio Raheem

I became aware of Lallana when we bought Theo from Southampton. Although, there’s been occasions when I have wished we had Lallana instead I think we made a good decision for the £9m we paid.
Liverpool may have paid a premium on Lallana but he’d certainly improve them certainly.

  69. Gunner2301

    Pedro

If you got RVPs header in your best moments you have to have Wengers as well particularly as he’s producing headers like that whilst he’s supposedly working in signings he’s a magician 🙂

As for Ozil I’m not gonna get down on him he’s not worth 42.5 mill and I wanted a striker but that’s the mentality we’re dealing with in Wenger buy what you don’t need and ignore what you do. Troublesome times ahead especially if he sells Santi having passed up Cesc.

  70. Jeff

    TYAG,

I understand that and I don’t think he does it on purpose. I grant you he has a confidence problem and wants to do well but gets easily disheartened when things don’t go right for him. Most of the inadequacies you see are psychological which have to be properly managed by the coach. He played for 120 minutes last night and scored the winning goal – that will have boosted his confidence and I’m willing to stick my neck out and say he will shine against France.

The penalty miss against Bayern was difficult to swallow for all of us but I still maintain that we need a player like Ozil on the pitch – what the manager has to do is set up his game-plan, players and strategies in such a way as to get the best out of him. If the ultimate question is “will he turn out like Torres” the answer to that is a definite no in my estimation.

  71. Willie

Scott, it’s already done. There’s no reversing it, like there’s no reversing the barren years we went through at the hands of clueless manager. Fabregas is already at Chelsea. I know it hurts, but you have to stop obsessing over it, I’d advise you watch some midget porn or something to help get over us having Oezil rather than Fab.
Your repetitive comments on that issue are getting kinda boring.

  72. Drey

    Jeff
I don’t buy that.. if I buy a player for £43m I expect u to be the fulcrum of the team.. the one everybody looks on when the chips are down.
Look around and check the attacking midfielders in that price range..
Don’t get me wrong. I love Ozil for what he does.. But,that £43m is now looking like casting pearls to swine

  73. Gunner2301

    Guys

Remember it’s Ozils first season in the prem. no winter break to fall back on for the first time in his career which is probably affecting him eve now. I’ll wait till end of next season which is enough time to adapt. If we see more of the same I’ll be the first to call for Wenger to get rid, but we all know he won’t just to save face and Ozil will go the way of Arshavin never fulfilling his potential.

  74. Carts

I’m not one to write a player off so soon, rather I commment on their current form. In Ozil’s case, he looks like he’s lacking a bit of confidence. Ozil from 4 years ago – WC 2010 – was potent as shit.

Let’s hope that goal gives him a boost. He’ll need a lot of rest post WC too.

  75. gambon

“Liverpool may have paid a premium on Lallana but he’d certainly improve them certainly.”

Dont see how he does really.

Sterling is better wide, Coutinho is just as good at #10

Sure he adds depth, but not the quality of delth that will take Liverpool on at all.

Too many purchases for the sake of buying someone these days.

  76. Romford Pele

“I don’t buy that.. if I buy a player for £43m I expect u to be the fulcrum of the team.. the one everybody looks on when the chips are down.”

Lol so David Luiz should be the one PSG look to right? Price isn’t always linked to quality man. You need to look at it objectively.

I’ve debated Ozil to death over the last few months and don’t wanna get drawn into another debate where I end up going in circles. I’ve defended him but not totally absolved him of blame. He has his deficiencies, sure. But what’s actually become much more apparent to me is that 95% of Ozil’s critics never actually watched him before he joined Arsenal.

  77. Jeff

    Drey,

Ramsey was the butt of every football joke on here for years and years. Then he had a purple patch last season and people are comparing him to this world class player or that. We should at least afford Ozil another season or two before condemning him as another Wenger flop of which there are many. But I really don’t think we have enough evidence to reach that conclusion just yet.

  78. Al

Why do people care so much about his price tag? I mean this is a club that has bleed its supporters for how many years while not spending, leaving us frustrated and trophy less for 9 years

The minute they spend and we win a cup people complain about how they have overspent…. i really don’t understand it.

  79. Al

    Romford
“He has his deficiencies, sure. But what’s actually become much more apparent to me is that 95% of Ozil’s critics never actually watched him before he joined Arsenal.”

    so bloody true.

Lallana is a fine player. But let’s not kid ourselves, here. He isn’t a £25m player.

At 25/26, I don’t see him getting any better. That’s not to say he’s rubbish, But he’s pretty ,much hit his ceiling, if I’m entirely honest.

    Liverpool overpaid by about £8m-£10m.

    gambon

So you rather have kept the £43m in the bank and not signed the best number 10 in football last year (because at real madrid nearly every single person regarded him as the best number 10).

  82. Josip Skoblar

    Karim
Congrats to France and Algeria (who were superb against Germany).
Why would Valbuena go to West Ham?… On his current form, I’d take him at Arsenal.

  83. Romford Pele

“Ramsey was the butt of every football joke on here for years and years. Then he had a purple patch last season and people are comparing him to this world class player or that. We should at least afford Ozil another season or two before condemning him as another Wenger flop of which there are many. ”

    This.

You would’ve thought people would’ve learnt by now.

I’m a big Wenger critic but look at how Mert, Kos, Ramsey have improved over time. Pires wasn’t great in his first season. Like I said, Ozil is an easy target because his facial expression gives off the impression that he doesn’t give a shit. He has a very languid style, which often appears as if he’s lazy (despite stats proving otherwise). It’s the problem with journalism these days, people take the easy route out without ever trying to analyse the reasons behind someone’s apparent lack of form. There’s no depth or substance to arguments.

Like I said before, i’m not trying to absolve Ozil of blame. I’ve repeated numerous times that Arsenal is different from Madrid. He has to adapt, get stronger, become more decisive and look for different ways to influence the game. But people condemning him after this season without taking the past 5 seasons into account need to take a look at themselves.

  84. Jeff

The other thing that people forget is that Ozil is the type of player that is only as good as those around him are willing to play. At RM he was surrounded by better players than he is at Arsenal so that is also going to have an effect.

It is the same with all of us. If you’re interacting with someone you respect, you will be more on toes about what you say and do than you are with someone for whom you have no respect. So you have to ask yourself a very important question. How does Ozil rate Giroud compared to other forwards he’s worked with?

  85. Keyser

I’m wondering how many real posters we actually have on here, and how many automated trolls Pedro has in circulation.

    – Spend some fucking money Arsene.

    – He’s worth what the market dictates he’s worth.

    – Spend some money you Cunt.

    – Well actually I’m beginning to wonder if Ozil’s worth it, nah definetly not worth 43 million that’s for sure.

  86. gambon

He isnt the best number 10 in football though, thats the point.

I was delighted when we signed him, but he hasnt been anything like a £43m player.

Now of course I will give him time, I would give any player coming from overseas until there second season.

But right now, it looks like we couldve got Eriksen, saved about £33m and not got a worse player.

    He needs to step up.

When youre the highest earner at the club you should be the best player at the club, Ozil is far from that.

More worryingly is that we cant afford for Wenger to go and get it wropng over and over.

He has £100m to spend, but could waste all of that on players that completely freeze in big games.

  87. Romford Pele

Also, people wanna keep bashing the Ozil transfer fee.

When you factor in what people go for in today’s market, I think it’s money well spent IMO.

Illaramendi went to Madrid for £34m
David Luiz went to PSG for over £40m
Axel Witsel went to Zenit for £34m
Pastore went to PSG for £34m
Robinho went to City for £32m

But like I said, let me not get in the way of people’s agendas.

  88. gambon

“Ozil is the type of player that is only as good as those around him are willing to play”

Isnt that a Euphemism for “average player”

  89. Radio Raheem

£18m, at the highest, would be my estimate for Lallana.

    gambon

I see your point. He is unlikely to replace those players you mentioned. To be fair very few players had better seasons than the ones you mentioned in the PL. Lallana made the PL Team of the season. They could play a 3 of Lallana, Sterling and Coutinho behind a striker Or Lallana and Sterling on either side of a striker…but yeah the value of depth cannot be underestimated especially with the number of games they’ll be playing next season.
If I was Rodgers I’d have gone for Cesc as a long term replacement for Gerrard. Then build the team around Cesc.

  90. Al

    @Romford

Its the fact that people are too defensive about the position they have taken up in regard to the manager, club or player.

For example some people don’t rate ozil so will always try to find a way to bash him (price tage not worth it, looks lazy etc) or those that rate him will always defend him even when he has a bad game (its not like world class players have never struggled before).

  91. Romford Pele

    Al,

I’ve always tried to take the middle ground. I’d probably describe myself as an Ozzil disciple, but that doesn’t mean I can’t accept he has faults. But yes, your point is valid. People will form an extremist opinion and stick to it regardless.

  92. gambon

    Romford

Eriksen went to Spurs for £10m
Rakitic went to Barca for £14m
    Cazorla went to Arsenal £12m
Silva went to Man City £25m

  93. Thank you and goodnight

    @Keyser
So I’m a troll because I’m a little concerned about Ozil’s performances. Fair enough. Just to please keyser…..
    Ozil is amazing
    Wenger is the greatest
Jenkinson is the greatest left back because he plays for us
Scez is the greatest keeper in the world
we have the best loo roll holders out of any club in the world.

  94. Jeff

    Romford,

That’s very true. Ozil always looks like he’s knackered after half and hour. But last night, after 120 minutes, he looked no more or less tired than at half time. So I agree that we can’t go by facial expressions.

I think that Ozil is probably (inwardly) too self-conscious, self-critical of his performance and sometimes it tends to have a detrimental effect.

  95. Scott

Giroud surround by quality players barring Benzema was so shit. He really is a joke of a striker. He is like a centre back playing upfront. Sad thing he will be first choice until Wenger is here. When you’re striker and no 10 are shit a scoring goals you know you are a shit manager.

  96. Romford Pele

“Remember it’s Ozils first season in the prem. no winter break to fall back on for the first time in his career which is probably affecting him eve now”

Well these are other faactors, sure. But people will only concentrate on what suits them.

  97. Drey

Lool Ramford come on man what is this? PSG are a bottomless pit of riches, they can buy whoever at whatever cost.. can’t compare them to Arsenal. for crying out loud we were signing £12m average players you would expect us to actually make a statement when we are going hard for the first time in years.. Ozil was bought to pacify the fans, never forget that. Wenger made one problem two when he bought him..
Clearly our priority was a striker yet he went ahead and panic-bought a no. 10 who can’t function without a Striker..
So in essence,Ozil ‘s transfer was just going on and on in a circle.
Bottom line is ,Ozil was A fantastic player at Real but at Arsenal he IS the world class player we were clamoring for. Obviously he is not cut out for that

  98. Maverick

    @gambon
“But right now, it looks like we couldve got Eriksen, saved about £33m and not got a worse player. He needs to step up.”

I am not sure this is the way I want to look at it. I want others around him to step up. He needs to get others to think that little bit faster, move better, control and pass better. I don’t want others to pull him down a level.
