There are no strikers available?

by .

Striker box. It's empty.

Striker box. It’s empty.

Was having a chat with a pal last night whilst watching Germany v Cameroon and Paraguay France. I think that was the line up. I watched both at the same time, it was a bit of a blur.

Anyway, the jist of the conversation was…

‘Where did all the good strikers go?’

I mean, even armed with £40m quid this summer, where are you taking it? You can count the number of world class names on one hand.

  • Aguerro
  • Robin
  • Ibrahimovic (though outside Ligue One?)
  • Lewandowski (at a push)
  • Suarez

Then where are you looking? There aren’t many. This is why I’m struggling to see where we go this summer. What would we prefer, a nearly striker, or to load up on attacking midfielders with the flexibility to play anywhere across the front like. That new half breed of striker is pretty big on the scene. Alexis would be a fantastic name. Draxler and Reus are right up there among the half breed heroes. You could throw Pedro in there as well.

I mean, when you’re being linked with Madman Mario, you really do see where the struggle is. Great player, nightmare personality. Could be world class if he had the head for the game. Certainly not a player I could imagine Wenger being able to tame.

The Telegraph are stating that Arsenal are going to shun Cesc Fabregas. I should hope so too. A lot of delusional Arsenal fans trying to push the ‘you can never have too many good players’… errr, yes you can. 22 world class goal keepers wouldn’t look too sharp would it? I think Manchester City have shown that you can have too many good players with their bloated squad.

I mean, I love Cesc, but the sentimental bullshit attached to his return is ridiculous. We killed any hopes of him returning when we punted on Ozil. Arsenal are well stocked with tricky midfielders both senior, mid twenties and youth coming through. We have a finite budget this summer.

1. Striker
2. Defensive midfielder
3. Right back
4. 3rd choice centre back
5. Pace setting winger

We have £100m available. I can’t see much room for a £30m creative midfielder, regardless of how good he is. I’d love to hear and argument against that. Because there quite simply isn’t one.

… that said, there wasn’t much of an argument last summer considering our needs at the start!

    Sal –
I’d be stunned too. But didn’t really see Ozil coming either. So screw it. Apparently, there is only Mad Mario in the box. So I still say go for it.

  2. Inter YourGran

Keyser – wenger and fabregas never had a bust up before he left..

What chu talkin bout willis 😆

  3. Radio Raheem

If Liverpool get Cesc then I’d be worried. He’ll add at least another 15 goals or assists to whatever they can do.
But yeah spending £25m on Lallana will be daft if you can get Cesc for £30m. The problem I’d assume will be the wages. Cesc will demand a lot more.

  4. kwik fit

    Oh Balotelli he’s a striker…
    He’s good at darts.
    He’s allergic to grass,
but when he plays he’s fucking class.
    Drives round Finsbury park
with a wallet full of cash,
    Can’t put on his vest
But when he does he is the best.
    Goes into schools,
    tells teachers all the rules.
    Sets fire to his gaff
    with rockets from his bath.
    Doesn’t give a fuck,
‘cause he did it for a laugh,
    Runs back to his house
For a suitcase full of cash,
    Oh Balotelli …

  5. MidwestGun

    Crazy for loving Ballotelli
Im Crazy because he used to wear City blue.

Why do I let myself worry?
What in the world Ballotelli will do.

Crazy for trying, crazy for crying,
    Crazy for loving Mad Maaariooooo.

  6. Sam

Cesc refused to play to force his move to barca. He’s now 27 n unwanted. I don’t expect wenger to pay 30millions if he really wants him back. If Cesc wants to prove barca wrong maybe he should consider real Madrid, arsenal are not in la liga

  7. kwik fit

You could have a world wide hit on your hands there. Just needs a little tweaking here and there

Sorry to say it but I can forsee another transfer season disaster for us. Just don’t think anyone running things at afc has the first fucking clue.
Prepare yourselves for panic buys just after we qualify for the CL.

  10. Keyser

Yeah when Fabregas and Ballotelli end up at Tottenham you’ll all come back what Stories I was on about.

At least they’re showing some ambition.

  11. kwik fit

    Cesc has agreement with Chelsea
Aurier in talks with two other PL sides

WTF is going on at Arsenal!

  12. Gunnershabz

Guys to be honest I can see wenger buying loic remy for £10m and alvaro morata for £20m and the rest on that defensive beast we need like lars bender or Paul pogba or javi Martinez and maybe angel di Maria

  13. Carts

Chelsea aren’t fucking about. Looking to bring fresh claret into the fold.

Both Cole & Lampard gone. Did Terry get a new deal?

  14. Frankie T

Not feeling cesc. One thing is were stocked with midfielders who can create and retain the ball. Secondly yes we know how good he is but we never won a thing when he was here so why the sudden belief that we would conquer all if he came back.

For me 4 signings will give us what we need.

    Rb – aurier
    DM – Martinez/ khedira/ bender
    Winger – sanchez
    Striker – remy

We could play 4-4-2 and have enough to change our shape and have impact players also, not to mention close out players when we want to hold the result.

    Front 6

    Walcott Ramsey Martinez ozil
    Giroud sanchez

    Impact subs
    Remy, podolski, cazorla, ox

    Close out players
    Wilshere, rosicky, flamini

    Young players to bleed in
    Gnabry, sanogo,

I know everyone has there opinion and it seems 50/50 out there but for me cesc does not fit in anymore.

  15. salparadisenyc

Personally I’d prefer Cesc cozied up at the Emirates.

  16. Dimitri

Hashtagging is for women and liberals. But yeah, come on who else is available? If he wasn’t mental he’d be a 50 million pound player, so to get him for half that just because he might miss ten or so games a season through suspension is nothing. Giroud is perfectly fine for twenty five games a season or so so he can spot him during suspensions.

Wenger could work wonders too, I know Mancini coddled him but nobody does it in that soft and delicate way that Wenger does, he has the magic touch with the young ones. It’s not just about mollycoddling, sometimes he needs discipline too. It’s a bit like carrot and stick.

Ibra, Suarez, Cavani and Van Rapie are the only strikers I can think off the top of my head who are near his talent, but they ain’t happening.

Let Cesc go elsewhere, everywhere he goes and plays a main role, teams miss out on trophies.

  17. WengerEagle

‘Anyway back to the point, consider Firmino against Ramsey, and you can see with Ramsey how long it’s taken him, all the games and the errors to get to where he is now at least start to appreciate that.’

The big difference there though is that Ramsey broke his leg which kept him out for 9 months and it probably took him close to that on top of those 9 months to regain his physical attributes and confidence. Before his injury he looked an outstanding player and if he hadn’t of suffered his injury he probably would have hit this level of performance a year or two earlier.

Great credit must go to Wenger for sticking with him through the bad times though.

  18. Keyser

A couple of ‘belfies’, post up my story about the Wenger/Cesc bust-up, and why Song was sold for standing up to the facist Wenger.

    Quids in.

  19. BacaryisGone

I have no clue who might be the new back-up keeper but make no mistake that Fabianski was crucial in us winning the F.A Cup this season with his worst game by far coming in the final. A quality keeper coming in is essential. Defensive midfield is another tough one as there’s no-one out there that we’re obviously pursuing although it should be a priority position.

JuanFran is the no-brainer at right back if we can land him. My guess is that we’ll keep Aurier on the line until we know JuanFran is out. I still think that African players no longer appeal to Arsene because the African Cup of Nations really disrupts the season.

Remy is also a no-brainer which then leaves certain wild-card possibilities. I would not be shocked if Arsene stays pat in centre midfield and pulls from Arteta, Ramsey, Wilshere, Diaby, Rosicky and Flamini for the two midfield positions in front of the defence. If so, bringing in Draxler for Podolski looks interesting.

So that’s my prediction and it will improve us but not quite enough.

IN: Caballero, JuanFran, Draxler, Remy (50 million)
OUT: Fabianski, Sagna, Podolski (10 million)

  20. Inter YourGran

Keyser – You sure you aren’t IndiaKaila or whatever his name is on twitter already 😉

  21. Keyser

That’s a siginificant difference Ramsey has had to work against, but he was still getting limited game-time in a team that wasn’t suited to his skillset and/or didn’t have the positions free for him.

It took him time to recover and then almost a season or two of regular game-time to make the position his own, it’s still not tied down and there’s question marks over him even now, because the form has been soo surprising.

This is playing at a far higher level, under pretty intense scrutiny.

I don’t want to denigrate Firmino’s production, but to compare them like for like, however well he’s done is weak, likewise Cazorla.

If Firmino came over and ‘made it’ in the team, it would be against the odds not because of them.

  22. MidwestGun

I think that confirms me as ‘In the Know’
Is that you getting all “nuclear” up in here? Lol. Maybe you don’t know what nuclear is? Do you remember DanC, For instance? Or perhaps you should read neil from yesterday? Your nuclear is more like rubber bands.

  23. Keyser

Is that a ponstar ? Might’ve seen her in ‘Big Brown Jumbalaya Booties 3’.

    Good actress, really convincing.

  24. Tippitappi

although I don’t think Cesc is now indispensable I would worry him going to a so called rival only Arsenal get themselves into these situations. Already starting to worry about lack of activity coupled with some of the bull supposedly coming from the usual suspects from within

  25. Keyser

MidwestGun – Not sure Elastic Potential is quite the same as Nuclear Fission, but keep me posted on your test results.

  26. WengerEagle

Fair enough it’s not a great comparison, I get where you’re coming from on the Ramsey part.

I still personally think that Firmino’s a rare talent and would make us more dynamic and unpredictable going forward though.

  27. Al

Can’t see Mourinho wanting Cesc. Guy only loves athletes and players that are defensive. Simply put if your selling Mata there is no way on earth your looking at Cesc.

The only i see this being plausible is if Cesc is one of their Sugar daddies favorite players and he forces him on Mourinhoe

  28. salparadisenyc

    Steady Keyser

Ted has curated Midwest to speak on ITKs and misnomers, mainly the fluidity of using Ramsay as a false #9.

  29. Keyser

“I still personally think that Firmino’s a rare talent and would make us more dynamic and unpredictable going forward though.”

I don’t have anything against him, just in terms of perspective, it’s far harder to find yourself a niche position at a club like Arsenal, than it is at Hoffenheim, no disrespect to them, Gervinho got sent off I think in his first game for us and never really recovered, partly because the fans were almost on edge throughout his time here.

Ramsey, Cazorla, you couldn’t say we’re playing to either’s strengths really.

  30. Keyser

Mata’s different to Cesc, I can see Cesc showing that narky side we all used to palm away as immaturity, telling Pulis to ‘Hush’ and so on, I think he’d almost enjoy it, he wouldn’t have to do much of the heavy lifting with Remeires and Matic around but could put his foot in or take the odd dive.

  31. Keyser

My first tweet might be ‘Arsenal raid Chelsea for World Class stars Lampard and Eto’o’

Wenger’s summer shopping spree includes Eto’o, Lampard alongside compatriot Alex Song and Aurier.

  32. Dimitri

There’s no need to pay for a back up goalie, Pantilimon is on a free and so is someone serviceable like Schwarzer. Better off using that money elsewhere.

  33. MidwestGun

    Wouldn’t your first tweet be.

Wenger decides to forego transfers in favor of retaining current squads fluidity. Ramsey excited to be training for false 9 role.
    #who needs goals.

  34. salparadisenyc

Whilst were attempting to raid Real Madrid, lets pull the ultimate coup and snare Theo Zidane. Apparently a handful at 12.

I thought the African Cup was only every other year, now.? Aurier, sign him up.

It has been every other year before too. Only difference is they’re playing on uneven years now.

  36. salparadisenyc

ZZ has four boys… 3 all on the books at Real Madrid.
But young Theo is suppose to be the pick of the litter.
    4th is too young.

  37. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

    Wenker ain’t changed his ways
Now looking to nick a 15 year old kid from the hammers….

Come to think bout it wenker has been nicking yoots for years
    Only cesc worked?

What happen to the others ?
Plumbers ? Builders ? Data workers now are they ?

  38. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

Nothing wrong with being in the building trade……
Just a massive career change if you have been a youth footballer.
Point I was making these kids never amount to anything?

  39. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

    Fixtures out soon

Would like this as an OpenGL game list

    Man city home
    Liverpool away
    Stoke away
    Chelsea home
    Spurs away
    Everton home

That should do us nicely to October

  40. MidwestGun

Will Joel Campbell do well in the World Cup ?
Will be interesting to see. Know he always does well against the USA. Also, being from a tropical island he should be able to adjust to heat and humidity of Brazil.
I’m doing good, work starting to really pick up,summer time my busiest.

  41. MidwestGun

I think Mourinho is just screwing with us now. Force AW to decide and possibly use some of our transfer budget. If Cesc agrees terms with Chelscum I think I would be physically sick.

  42. tunnygriffboy

You made a great point earlier. I could take missing out on Cesc as long as Wenger spends a lot of cash. That is the issue and it’s a bloody big one. If Cesc signs for Chelsea and we don’t expect bloody meltdown in the passive fan base. Geddit ?

You sure about Aurier. I just read article he’s speaking to other PL clubs, one thought to be Lpool

  43. MidwestGun

    Rspc –
Ya, love the summer. Going down to Texas next month. Spend some time on the beach while im there.
Mourinho knows how to push Wenger’s buttons that’s for sure.

  44. Sam

Cesc is another midget we don’t need
    Spend money on Javi Martinez

    Now we will have

    Ozil—— martinez ——-Ramsey

    Fuck Cesc

  45. Cesc Appeal

If Fabregas goes to Chelsea, United or Liverpool and we have a debacle of a summer like last year then the club is thick as two short planks if they face anarchy with shocked expressions.

This is why so much power should have been taken away from Wenger who is now an elder statesmen and has pretty much followed a cyclical pattern of gaffs over the second half of his reign.

I fear a three year deal, agreed on his terms means it’s same old same old.

  46. salparadisenyc

    Big Sam

If it was down to Cesc or Javi Martinez i’d leap at Martinez.
    Game changer.
It won’t, as we know Wenger rarely gets what he truly needs.

  47. Cesc Appeal

Then like I say, if the club allow a “Wenger Window” to ensue then they only have themselves to blame for what will invariably follow.

I’m glad for the world cup, but it’s sort of like someone distracting you whilst a doctor gives you a big fat old injection, you will still get the pain, all be it delayed, and if we’re comparing it to an Arsenal transfer window then you realise instead of medicine it was full of HIV and Ebola.

  48. Guns of brixton

    Aurier Mert koz gibbs

    Ramsey Martinez

    Di maria OZ OX

Yeah boy, thats the one for me
    drax ?

  49. Dark Hei

I am not buying the Remy or Aurier to Arsenal stories. Aurier, over a video where he merely nodded his head? Remy, whose name was whispered over a radio?

    Silly really.

The Fabregas thing is 100% emotional. I can handle Fab going to City, because Pellegrini, seems like a nice guy. And anyone that slags JM is a good person.

But ESPN are reporting that Chelsea’s interest in genuine. Which is a worry as ESPN don’t spin something out of nothing. Honestly Cesc going to Chelsea to play under JM is a disaster on many levels. Imagine the gloating we will receive from the Chavs. Imagine Cesc, going to play for a coach who did the following:-

    1. Coached Real Madrid
    2. Poked Tito Vilanova in the eye, from behind
    3. Called Cesc original mentor, Wenger, a “specialist in failure”. While I can understand Pedro calling Wenger that, such behaviour is undignified among pros and seriously low.
    4. Be John Terry’s team mate

He will burn his Barca and Arsenal bridges altogether at one go.

Fab, if your only offer is from Chelski, please dig your heels and stick to Barca.

  50. MadeToLoveMagic

yeah i agree, cesc playing for maureen would be a massive diss to both the clubs that are closest to his heart…………..

what is absolutely fucking me off, is that all the papers are reporting that arsenal have said they dont want fabregas and that he is hurt by this!

where is it coming from? theres nothing been said by either party

ive even seen fabs to spurs reported , it really is silly season

the internet = the death of good mainstream journalism

  51. WengerEagle

Falcao hasn’t properly recovered from his ACL injury and has been dropped from Colombia’s final world cup squad.

Feel for the guy, missing a world cup in your prime at 28 in your home continent must be a bitter pill to swallow.

Hopefully one of Jackson Martinez/Carlos Bacca/Adrian Ramos can step up to the plate in his absence.

  52. Emiratesstroller

This season Arsenal listed 28 players in first team squad on website including Kallstrom who replaced Park in January.

The list includes five players who will definitely leave this summer i.e. Fabianski, Viviano,Sagna,Kallstrom and Bendtner either at end of loan or contract.

There are also three other players in squad who seldom if ever played in first team namely Miyaichi, Zelalem and Diaby [injured].

Three questions need to be asked which are:
    1. Do we need a squad with 28 players?
2.Will there be any additional players leaving?
3.Are there any players currently on loan or in U21 squad who might be promoted?

Dealing with first question I could see justification in reducing size to 25 or 26 so long as the players included are all of quality to play in first team.

Second I don’t see Wenger buying more than 3 or 4 new players despite the
huge list of requirements by some posters. The most likely additions are:
    Goalkeeper [second string]
    Right Full Back [first string]
    Defensive Midfielder [first string]
    Striker [second string]

If he registers a third string goalkeeper he will either promote Martinez or bring in loan.

I don’t see any other senior players being offloaded unless they express the wish to leave.

There are perhaps four younger players who might be loaned out for experience i.e. Sanogo,Gnabry,Zelalem or Miyaichi [might be sold]. The only players
from current crop of loans or U21 players who might be added are Martinez [gk] and Campbell [fw].
