The Yin of Gareth Barry the Yang of electric wideman

Man, all I wanted to do was kick the day off with a flying post… instead, the damn papers are trolling me.

How dare two separate publications suggest Arsenal are in for Gareth Barry. In a season where we’ve seen the side suffer directly from a lack of pace, surely the manager can’t be looking at Gareth Barry as a viable options? I mean, it’s beyond comprehension that he’d look at an ageing veteran like him and feel he could be the difference between fourth and 1st.

The worst thing about this story is it’s not the first time we’ve heard it. It’s been festering for a while. If it happens, it’ll be about cost and convenience rather than pushing the needle of quality forward in the club. What does Barry have that Arteta doesn’t? Why would you want two Artetas? We need a machine in the middle, not a player who will at best, only be able to play 1 game a week. Not a player who won’t be able to hack teams that fly… like Liverpool. Honestly, such a depressingly typical story…

In other more positive news, the sounds around the Aurier story are encouraging. He looks like a beast and more than able replacement for Sagna.

In more positive news than that… rumours are totally hot that Alexis Sanchez is on the Arsenal radar at £20m. That would be a super tasty signing. He’s lightening and can play right across the front line. He’s exactly the sort of player that gives you a different edge and his pace would be electric next to someone like Theo Walcott. Juventus are also rumoured to be in for him… but hopefully the lure of the Premier League will be enough to see him come to us.

… and even more good news for Arsene, apparently he is going to stay. Wow… that was a close shave. What’s more interesting is that a day after the Wenger to Monaco stories dropped, they’ve pretty much appointed Jorge Jesus from Benfica… who they met last Friday. Wow, it’s almost like Wenger was never a priority and that story was magically spun into the media by someone? I wonder who?

OH MY… Arsenal also eyeing Xavi this summer. Some odd old rumours going about. I wonder who we’ll be looking to pinch off Real this summer? Surely they’re going to clear out some talent that didn’t quite make it?

Ok, onto today. The only way this game has anything on it is if Norwich beat us 32 – 0. So it’s a bit tough to get too pumped about it. I don’t even know what to write?

WIN THE GAME BOYZ.

That’s all I’ve got.

Ok, so here’s an idea, let’s start thinking about some FA Cup memories. E-mail me in some of yours, keep it to a max of a couple of paragraphs. Any great stories, any great pictures you might have. I’d be interested to read them and put them out on the blog next week.

How does that sound? It sounds good…

Right, enjoy the final day of the season, and I’ll see you back here for a match report tomorrow!

Sanchez could replicate what Suarez does at Liverpool. He has the same attributes. Speedy and direct, just what we need. He’ll go to Juventus though

  2. Wallace

no way he’ll buy Barry with Arteta already here. Sanchez would be groovy, but can’t really see it.

  3. Wallace

unless transfer speculation concerns a striker, dm, or right back i think it’ll be wise to ignore it.

    ALT. REALITY:

…” just need 3 pts today Vs norwich and we got the title, sooo nervous bout citeh, hope WHU does a number on them, hope Ozil, ramsey and Suraez step it up again today. . . the double here we come!!”

  5. N5

I’m mates with Gareth, we went to school together and played for the same football team as young uns and I still knock about with his brother Mark, purely out of selfish reasons I wouldn’t want to see him at Arsenal. I don’t mind other players getting stick, but I don’t want a friend of mine called a cunt and things for being slow or “Arteta” like.

  6. Omar

    @Arsene nose best
Are you from the Caribbean? Dont hear that word “bumbahole” used anywhere else but the Caribbean or by a Caribbean descendent.

  7. Marko

No way he’ll sign Barry. We’re likely to see our holding midfielder bought from Germany in my opinion. Whether it’s Bender, Martinez, Xhaka or Gustavo I couldn’t tell you. Alexis Sanchez i wouldn’t rule out either Barca need to sell before they buy and there were strong rumours before about them willing to let go of one of Alexis or Pedro and you’d doubt the Barca born lad would be the one they let go.

  8. tunnygriffboy

Hope if we rest a goog few of the boys LG won’t go nuts if we lose or draw.

It’s silly season re the transfer window, I agree with you Wallace. We’re linked with everyone and his dog. When other clubs are linked with players we may not be there’s always the cry that we should be in for him. I try to take it all with a pinch of salt. If I believed everything I’d be a nervous wreck.

  9. Cesc Appeal

I said weeks back, expect underwhelming signings like Barry, Lescott and Drmic/Remy.

It’s easy for Wenger because no one else wants them, not on Arsenal’s level anyway so he doesn’t actually have to do anything except give them all ridiculously inflated wages.

And then he’ll claim we’ve addressed the issues from last year, we have more depth (we all know how Wenger likes to totally contradict himself) and we’ve always had the quality. Now it’s about getting the injured players fit and keeping them that way (last 12 years beg to differ that that is EVER going to happen) and working harder to win the league.

Fast Forward >>>> May 2015. “We should be proud of finishing 4th. (Though to be honest, with United likely to spend a bomb I don’t see how we get into the top 4. Unless Liverpool absolutely fall to pieces both in the summer window and the season.”

  10. MarbleHall

No need to rest players with a full week to the Cup Final.
As Arsenal have shown all season regardless who is in the side they always beat the second rate teams.

  11. patthegooner

    Aurier, Xavi and Alexis Sanchez

I think you got it right on the first bit, our summer is more likely to involve a ‘a decent RB would kill Jenkinson’ statement, Barry and Demba Ba with maybe a last minute Kalou for good measure.

  12. Omar

Wenger will probably strengthen just enough to defend our Stamina League title and 4th place trophy. As for the real trophies like EPL and Champion’s League and those types of things, Wenger doesn’t see them as important.

  13. Zoran

Everybody suddenly speaking about Sanchez from Barcelona. Good player, no doubt.
But, nobody from AFC is speaking about “our” player Carlos Vela. I don’t see why is Sanchez a better player than Vela, Vela’ results at Sociedad are impressive compared to Sanchez’s at Barca.

On top of that, we could resign Vela for as much as £3 million, ( clause in the contract) instead of giving away £20 million for a player who never played in EPL, like Vela.
If that cunt was a better mathematician, he could easily earn us £15 million buying, and then selling strait away Vela, if he is not convinced in his abilities.

  14. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

Re transfer window. You’re glass isn’t even half empty today it’s down to the dregs in the bottom loooooool (I know, just like Arsene’s transfer targets ). Come on butty we will do it, chin up .

  15. patthegooner

    Really Marko??

We have been sniffing around both journeymen for years and both actually represent a typical Wenger signing. I am sure you probably said that people were idiots if they really thought we would have signed Silvestre.

On Vela, I would welcome it, I thought he was never given a fair crack.

  16. jwl

I started following Arsenal in Rioch season twenty years ago, I think we finished either fifth or sixth that year, and I wonder if Wenger plans to leave the club approx where he found it. Sign Barry, a couple of other dodgy players, and we will be looking at fifth and wenger can say he left club at level as when he came in.

Is wenger’s two year contract extension rumour or fact? Two years not very long, after one season there will be questions constantly asked about who’s replacing wenger. What is point of two year extension? It is astonishing how Arsenal have become vehicle for wenger to puff up his ego and nothing else. No thoughts of winning, just stability and attitude that finishing fourth annually is good as it gets.

  17. Marko

Just my opinion. I think the only reason people ever bring up us signing Kalou or Barry is to have a bitch fest. I honestly don’t see it ever happening

  18. patthegooner

    Marko

As squad players, I would take both Barry and Kalou. Barry really would not surprise me on a free. Kalou would probably only be signed if our targets haven’t joined on deadline day.

But our objective has to be to improve the overall quality of our best starting 11.

  19. Wallace

“Just my opinion. I think the only reason people ever bring up us signing Kalou or Barry is to have a bitch fest. I honestly don’t see it ever happening.”

    yup, pretty much.

  20. jwl

N5 Neat that you played with a quality player when you young – was barry a star even way back when?

When I played ice hockey when I was young, I had natural talent but I didn’t have attitude to training and dedicate my life to sport. I played at elite level in toronto for three years, I dropped out of hockey when I was 15, and not one player in my year made it to pros. Making to the top, playing for a premier league team, is extremely rare/difficult as you know.

  21. Cesc Appeal

    tunny

Not a case of full or empty or anything for me. I’m just ready for a Wenger window.

All the sound bites that I was calling back in January he’s already making, stability, working harder, getting our injured players back, adding only super quality…it’s all horse shit. And it all adds up to a Wenger Window.

Doesn’t bother me, I know what’s coming. It’s just the people who are thinking for some reason after a decade of repeat mistakes Wenger is suddenly going to say “Ohhh, THAT’S what I was doing wrong.’ That’s not how Wenger works.

He’s a lazy manager. He’ll do the very least he has to to appease fan base and look as if he’s addressing squad issues.

I’m telling you right now, he’ll contradict himself. He’ll say one week “it’s not about numbers, it’s about quality.’

Then when he signs, Barry, Lescott, Remy etc or those level players he’ll say “it was about adding some bodies and some depth to rotate with the quality we already have.’

    I bet you now.

  22. Cesc Appeal

Yeah, because Wenger would never sign utter shit like Barry or Kalou would he?

Have you just started supporting Arsenal??

What’s more embarrassing than signing Kalou?

Getting turned down by Kalou on January 31st.

  23. kwik fit

    Interesting stat from last nights eurovision;

    In 1966
    Austria last won the eurovision
Real Madrid won the european cup
    A Madrid won la Liga
And England won…………………well you can’t expect miracles can you 🙂

  24. Cesc Appeal

    kwik

    Is that actually true?

    That would be spooky.

Though I have a feeling England will let down the spookiness of it.

  25. Wallace

i’m sure we’ll spend decent money this summer. maybe not the 150m some le grovers want, but definitely serious money on a dm and striker, and £6-10m on a sagna replacement.

  26. kwik fit

    CA

It’s true alright. Having said that neither Real nor atletico have actually done it yet. If they did then who knows.

Yeah, because Wenger would never sign utter shit like Barry or Kalou would he?Have you just started supporting Arsenal??What’s more embarrassing than signing Kalou?Getting turned down by Kalou on January 31st.

I hear ya but the validity of us trying/being turned down by Kalou on Jan 31 is debatable but I think that and the Barry train are likely gone. If we were gonna sign Barry it was 2 years ago, Kalou within 2 years of him leaving Chelsea. Christ I’d say we’ll actively try to get rid of 32 year old slow as fuck Arteta this summer. And then what we’ll replace him with 33 year old slow as fuck Gareth Barry? Not likely at all imo

  28. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

I know you’ve been saying those things for a while. If I’m honest stability, hard work are things that are important. I’m so glad Kos has signed, that was really important. One of Wenger’s strenghs and at the same time weaknesses is loyalty to his players. Som9etimes it’s definitely misplaced at others it brings the best out of players.

I think we’ll see a new RB, CM and a striker / versatile forward, I was hoping for both unless he’s thinking of more game time for Gnabry. I know you think differently but we will have to see. We’ll have to discuss as window progresses.

Could well be harder to get 4th next season. Man u will be stronger but I think Lpool will find it hard with CL. Rodgers also needs a good few players and the 100 million he’s spent last 2 years hasn’t been brilliant apart from Sturridge who he knew really well and Coutinho.

  29. Cesc Appeal

All I can say is, we’ll see.

If I had to bet a serious amount of money I know where Id stick it in predicting out summer inactivity.

I hope this the last time I hear from fans though “Wenger is going to spend big” if it does all go tits up…because every year people say, right, if he doesn’t spend this time that’s really it!

And by 9 months later they’ve all forgotten and start saying the same things again.

  30. Marko

Hey CA the last 2 windows wee the last straw for me. I’m now one of those wait and see but don’t get my hopes up frustrated Arsenal fans. But at the same time I highly doubt we’ll move for the likes of Barry or Kalou.

  31. Ken

Barry would be used as a backup left footed centre back. His slow but he is very experienced and strong. His an upgrade on Vermaelen in my opinion. Barry has been used as a Defensive Midfielder but started his career as a CB. He could prove to be a dependable, experienced and versatile signing who could also play as a defensive midfielder, and be used off the bench when we need to see out a game. He should be 1 of 2 new centre backs the club need to bring in this summer.

  32. patthegooner

I think Arteta should stay but again, he should effectively be demoted to squad player. His legs are going but he can still make an impact off the bench.

Rosicky will not last much longer either, although I have to say he has been immense in the last couple of years.

  33. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

With me it’s definitely the last. Said it after Ozil as you know. The whole system of our transfers does seem off. Couldn’t we use someone like Henry in the future to and talk to prospective targets.

When is the AST meeting ? Gazidis and Dick Law are there. I hope they’re asked pertinent questions re this summers spend.

  34. Ken

    Manchester City
    Barcelona
    Bayern Munich
    Man Utd
    Monaco

will all try to bring in centre backs this season. The competition for the best will be fierce and Arsenal can only offer them roles as back ups to Mertesacker and Koscielny so we won’t be signing a proven world class centre backs. More like players in there 30’s or young unproven players.

Who would take a punt on Puyol and Barry as our new backup CBs?

  35. shad

Blessed Sunday to all! Don’t forget to celebrate your mothers this day too – they are a gift from God.

Onto things football, today is a dead rubber game. Would like to see players like Zelalem and Jenkinson play, give the main lads a rest. FA cup should be in the bag within the 90 if we turn up with the right attitude. Need to paste Hull a good one.

And the transfer rumours are all bollocks. You heard the senile man already say how it’s difficult to snap up players before 15th July. SMDH

It would be a massive disaster you idiot. Only at Arsenal would you get players coming out with shit like this.

This is why I am convinced we won’t win the FA cup, our players are spineless. Then Wenger will come out and say its a successful season as we reached a final and all the wenger loving idiots will lap it up

  37. Sam

Personally I think the Wenger Loving Idiots or AKBs should all be rechristened Bumbaholes right away. What a fantastic word. cheers.

  38. tunnygriffboy

Guys please read the whole Per interview. He was asked ‘It would be a disaster if we lost the fa cup ?’ All he said was ‘ that would be a bit harsh ‘ . He said that we really want to win it and there is pressure on us.

Once again headline writers twist what someone has said.

  39. Marko

    PedroMay 11, 2014    12:03:44
Wallace / Marko, we bid for Kalou in January, he came out and said so

Much like Kallstrom it was probably born out of desperation and short term. Again it doesn’t mean we’ll go back in for him in the summer. We’re likely to go for a long term target like Draxler…or bury our heads in the sand I don’t know

  40. Cesc Appeal

    tunny

They never get asked pertinent questions.

It always seems very staged, very led down a certain avenue. And anyway, Gazidis is snake oil; he just has the answers. He’ll always say ‘we have huge financial resources’ blah blah.

The club is going to do what Wenger wants to do – or not to do more aptly.

  41. Cesc Appeal

    Marko

My thinking is, I just wouldn’t be anything past Wenger.

Or put it this way, we’re more likely to see Barry than we are Martinez.

I started losing it with Wenger in January 2011, and since then he has done nothing but erode not just my faith in him; but my liking of him as a human being.

He’s certainly tainted the memories I’ll have of him when he finally, mercifully leaves the club.

  42. tunnygriffboy

Apologies. Per was asked ‘ will the season be a failure if we lose the fa cup ? ‘ He then said ‘thats a bit harsh and it wouldn’t be a disaster if we failed to beat Hull ‘. Mind you, what else does he say ? If anyone doubts that this group of players don’t desperately win the cup then I would disagree. There will be a different attitude in this side than the one who turned up for the Birmingham game. To be honest I can’t remember a cup final where a team has had so much pressure on them going into that final. That will come from wall to wall media coverage and us the fans

  43. N5

JWL it was at junior school, he was 2 years younger than me and still could score from the half way line at 8. It’s amazing the difference between quality, even at that age.

We all started smoking at chasing women and playing with Fireworks, but Gareth would just play football at the swings, repeatedly heading and kicking the ball against the top of the swings, day in and out. When he got to Parker (secondary school) he was discovered by Brighton and the rest is as they say history.

I don’t see him often now as we move in such different circles, but if he’s in Hastings seeing his family then we normally bump into each other.

  44. Cesc Appeal

It’s not a ‘bit harsh’ at all…the season would be a total failure without the FA Cup.

  45. tunnygriffboy

Surely if the AST really went to town about signing players it will register. If nothing is done by the time the first game comes the atmosphere will be more poisonous than the Villa game this season.

  46. tunnygriffboy

    Cesc

It ‘d be a disaster for me certainly. I just don’t think that Per was going to say that.If I’d played every game, given my all and been asked if that hard work had been a failure I’d have ‘Pardewed him ‘ looooool

  47. gonsterous

so this is the last PL game for sagna in an arsenal shirt !!! Goodbye and good luck where ever you may go… 5 years and im still not use to the hair ^^

  48. tunnygriffboy

I think the players will be under enough pressure to win it without heaping more on themselves by saying it will be a disaster if they lose. If anything they need to take some of the pressure away so they can express themselves and not be too tense.

  49. Gilo

Barry is actually a decent player much better than his reputation suggests he’s intelligent and never gives the ball away, however to sign him would be a disgrace and signify that the next two years will be a living nightmare.

If we sign Kalou I will commit ritual seppuku next to Dennis’s statue at the first game of next seasonv

  50. Cesc Appeal

    tunny

Just the loser mentality at the club is stifling.

It’s like “missing out on 4th wouldn’t be a disaster, we’ve prepared for it financially.” Remember that doozy?

Everything about Arsenal screams amateur, afraid to win, afraid to have expectation.

I want a player to say “well we’re not going into an FA Cup final even entertaining the possibility of losing, so I can’t really answer your question.”

  53. london gunner

    N5

No offense your Friend but I would disappointed if we signed Barry not because of him tbh but because his 33..

I think we really need to lock down that position with someone we can get a good 5 years out of at least whilst playing being able to play 3 games a week.

I think that’s an integral part of our squad that has been sorely missing

I don’t really understand why Everton wouldn’t keep Barry his been absolutely brilliant for them.

  54. N5

Me too London. I didn’t want Barry when he was younger. He’s a good player, but I’ve always wanted Arsenal to aim higher than him. There is a reason he spent the bulk of his career at Brighton, Villa and Everton. Mediocre teams for a just above average midfielder.

  55. GoonerInNY

    Cesc Appeal,

    Your posts are dead on.

For me it is simple: Last summer was Flamini (free), Sanogo (free) and Ozil (fell into Wenger’s lap on the last day of the window). January was KK (loan). Both windows Arsenal had tons of money available. Both windows there were glaring obvious needs (striker in the summer, and striker, Walcott replacement and Ramsey replacement in January). But Wenger did nothing.

What makes this window different? There is no evidence. Nothing Wenger has said or done. To me, it will be a repeat of last summer until I see otherwise.

  56. tunnygriffboy

    London

I agree. To be fair Barry has done well at Everton but he isn’t the long term answer. I want a young athletic type. Barry does have experience and game sense but he has only had to play once a week this season. We need more pace in the side. Aurier will give us loads more pace from RB if we sign him.

  57. N5

If anything, Wenger has already started playing down big buys to the supporters with his last interview, saying he’s looking for hardworkers over quality.

  58. london gunner

If Aurier can give as much as Zabelleta!
Ozil Aurier combinations could be like Silva and Zabba.

There is a reason Silva’s assists stats aren’t that high its because he assists the assist maker Zabba in this instance

  59. Bergmap63

  60. Arsene's Nurse

Arsenal don’t do any of their transfer business in public so any rumours in the press are just desperate journalists making stuff up.

It’s the same every transfer window. Until there is a picture of a player in an Arsenal shirt on the official website then I’ll ignore every report.

Why get your hopes up and put yourself through the mental anguish?

  61. N5

That’s a really good point Nurse. Over the past 4 or 5 seasons have we ever got anyone we’re linked with? we normally only catch wind of it the day it happens. Ozil, KK etc we’re not mentioned until the day they signed.

  62. london gunner

LOL Jose Mourinho said Dzeko should of been player of the season…. Not Suarez

Lol if he thinks Suarez isn’t the best fair enough but surely the only other candidate is YAYA TOURE for the fact he can single handedly win games

I know all this rumours making me go ric boing cuckooooo !
    ———————————————————————-
Drives me bonkers too. Now if we were Walsall FC and we were linked to these players we’d all laugh and joke about it because it would be impossible to bring them to the club.

However, we are the Arsenal and we have CL football, state of the art stadium and facilities, a huge wage bill and loadsa moolah in the bank to bring in just about anyone we wish.

And that’s the problem right there; it is possible for us to bring in WC players and build a great team/squad with a few additions.

looks like a full strength line-up

fingers crossed we come out unscathed

starting flappy over scez. now he can’t win the golden gloves?

  75. PieAFC

The players will be pumped for the up final.

Lovely mixture of experience and youth finally.

Go into the summer with a winners medal, WC year, come back and proper nice stepping stone. Just hope the performance can match a result.

Jamal I don’t like the fact Fab isn’t playing. Others were saying he shouldn’t be playing because he isn’t signing next season, but if that is the rule, than neither should Sagna and Wenger should let Bould manage as he hasn’t signed yet.

Fab should be in goal imo.

R.S.P.C.Arsenal : “Please take the Monaco role wenker”

So you believe in miracles ?? Why not, after all I won the lottery last night, and by the way you are all invited at the Emirates’s restaurant for the celebration.

  78. Arsene's Nurse

    Looks like this

    ——————-Fabianski————————
    Jenks———Sagna——-Kozz———-Gibbs
    —————Arteta———Ramsey————
    Rosicky————Ozil—————-Podolski
    ———————Giroud————————

No centre backs on the bench though.

    Why no Vermaelen?

  79. bergkamplegend

N5 : correct, as we are in the final mostly because of him.

But I have a bad feeling about this goalkeeper’s story, and about the final as well…

Old habbits die hard when you’re a gooner…LOL

  80. N5

Jamal, agreed and I have no idea why there is this semi-hypocritical policy of not playing him because he won’t commit but saying it is OK for Sagna due to him being such an important player this year and not a bencher like Fab.

Both are identical in reason, except one plays regular.

  81. Arsene's Nurse

I’d play Flappy in the final – he deserves it. Don’t care if he’s off in the summer. It will also be a warning to Szczesny – stop taking selfies and being an arrogant twat and shape up a bit.

The fa cup , if we win will be great for the fans and the players.

For Sagna, Rosicky be great after many years of service

Arteta, kos, Per et al haven’t won much in their career

Gibbs, Jack, Rambo, Ox and all the youngsters would get huge confidence

Ozil. Brought in to help win trophies may get one in his first year.

  83. PieAFC

    Exactly Tunny.

Hoping this is the stepping stone and enough for us as a club to march on and add more to it, realise chasing mediocrity is not enough for a club like Arsenal.

  84. bergkamplegend

Bergkamp63 : “Maybe only those that are staying at the club will be playing in the final at Wembley ?”

LOL Le Senile One in the cages!!

Would love to see City lose this…

Like Arsene leaving, it’s never gonna happen !

    N5 –
One of my friends growing up who I played with on a traveling team, also made it big enough to play for the US national team a dozen times or so and scored a goal. Whenever I would watch them play at the bar and people would say negative things about him, it would drive me crazy. Lol. So I know what you are talking about.
Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal player of the year for me. Mertesacker or Koz runner up.

  87. Marko

Gotta give Ramsey or Koscielny our player of the year. Ramsey for his massive improvement and becoming a key player and Koscielny for his consistency

  88. Cesc Appeal

    N5

Yes it would. But didn’t Wenger do something similar sticking Seamen in a final?

Would be more harsh to Sagna, our most steady and reliable servant of the trophyless years.

  89. Cesc Appeal

    Pedro

And hear the scousers go on about it for the next few decades?

No ta. City win all the way.
