Arsene gets a free ride through risk aversion

Ok, so we’r getting into off-season territory, so I’m not sure how I’m going to keep things going this summer.

If you are an excellent writer and you have an editorial idea, float it past me and send it in. Make sure it’s interesting, loaded with opinion and grammatically correct.

Unlike most of my stuff.

Badum tscchhhhh!

Wasn’t even a joke.

Right, what have we on the plate of football today?

Errr…. Arsenal fans have forced BT to stop recording outside of the ground because of the bad language. OMG. Bad language. Isn’t it ridiculous that we’re in the 21st century and people will complain if they hear a naughty word on the TV. I mean, honestly, 20 people out of 5 million watching and they have to change the way they schedule shows because boring people are affronted. It’s pathetic.

What else are we talking about?

Javi Martinez is apparently subject of a sensational £28m bid from Arsenal (The Telegraph didn’t call it sensational, another headline I saw did). Errr… sensational? He cost £35m before he was a European Champion. I can’t imagine he’s leaving for anything less than £40m considering he’s 25 and an incredible player. He’s exactly the sort of player we could do with, he’s mobile, powerful, 6ft3 and full of tenacious rage. He’s also technically brilliant.

… begs the question, why would he leave?

Well, he’s not happy about playing in a static defensive midfield position. I think he wants to play more Ramsey / Vieira-esque. I still think there’s room for that type of player in our team. It’s not like we’re looking for a Gilberto, we need energy in our midfield to replace the weary legs of Arteta.

However, I don’t see this happening. I really don’t.

I find it quite incredible that a team as well stocked with cash and glory as Bayern are having this player exodus talk.

So far, we’ve got:

Kroos > United

Mueller > United

Martinez > Arsenal

Gotze > Arsenal

Can’t see all those guys moving, at the very worst, they just don’t like the competition on offer at Bayern. I doubt it though, who wouldn’t want to play for Pep G? Also, on the Martinez story, I don’t mean to be a total realist here, but move from Bayern to Arsenal? Why? Same with Bayern to United? Why?

Manchester City as good as tied up the Premier League last night. They spanked a terrible Aston Villa out of sight in the second half and edged closer to their second league title. Two goals from Dzeko proved what having a squad stocked full of talent can do for you. He’s bagged  27 odd goals this season. An exceptional return for a player who had been pushed aside by Jovetic and Negredo.

When people harp on about ‘if only we had Ramsey and Theo fit’. I think they forget that other teams have suffered injuries this year. City have gone large chunks without Aguerro, but they had a back up. I don’t think you can ever bank on a full season with your best players. We can definitely improve it, but it goes beyond just the injury, it’s about keeping your best players fresh. We were spanked heavily by City with Aaron in the side.

The way you foster fitness isn’t by simply amending training and rotating a bit. You’ve also got to look at the depth of your squad.

Arsene never talks about squad depth (he called it an illusion in the Shreeves interview). He always talks about the reaction he has to take to injuries and the toll that has on the squad. I’m shocked he’s not worked out that the injuries he has happen because his squad isn’t deep enough with quality, so he doesn’t rotate. The starting 11 get tired, then injured… then that same process happens to the reserves.

Arsene might only be able to make 3 major 1st team signings this summer, but there’s no reason he can’t boost our bench with midrange players with attributes. Now, I’m not suggesting Puncheon, but when he played against Liverpool the other night, his pace stretched Liverpool and forced them to defend basically on their goal line. He’s not the greatest player in the world, but off the bench, 70 minutes to go, he’s asking questions.

Who is asking questions of our bench at the moment?

Monreal. The cheeky chappy.

Did anyone see the quotes from Arsene when talking about Hazard?

‘Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn’t make.

‘He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well.’

Now, if Wenger thought he’d turn into one of those players, why couldn’t he match the Chelsea offer. We had the money in 2011? He was clearly going to be a world beater. Billy Beane said that if a player is smashing it in his teens, he’ll be a worldy most of the time. Hazard was an exceptional teen. So why didn’t we punt for him? He’s an educated risk… Ligue One player of the year twice before he was 20. Fast, low centre of gravity, goals, assists… great technique. Buy him for £35m… could be worth £50m within 2 seasons.

‘The biggest risk is not taking any risk… in a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks’

That quote is from Mark Zuckerberg. Now, I know Facebook and Football is a but different, but my point here is that we spunked all our risk into the stadium. Then we gave up. We’ll have £170m in the bank this summer, that’s been sitting there, losing value for years. Why? Because the manager is petrified of risk because it makes him accountable. Wenger computes risk with cost. So his cheap risks are not deemed as failures, when in the context of having massive amounts of money his risks are actually pretty ridiculous.

He’s right as well, I see fans justifying our shit show of a season with spend totals. Wenger gets a free ride for spending the 5th highest amount in the league, despite having enough cash to spend the most. Why does he get a free ride for having a poor season with the budget to have a great one? He didn’t do the best with what he had. Surely inaction is worst trait in sport?

Juan Mata – £22m (Wenger pulls the plug) >>> Opts for Gervinho (£8m) + Chamberlain (£15m)

The outcome? Chelsea sign a player who helps them win a bunch of trophies as well as picking up player of the year for them twice. Arsenal flunk out with Gervinho and Chamberlain is still a way of being the finished article.

The cost of taking two lesser risks is that we forfeited trophies. The expense of Mata was recouped almost twice by Chelsea 3 years later.

High cost players are generally high cost because they have a talent premium. It’s not up to me to tell you who has premium talent. That’s not my job. However, someone like Draxler is on my radar as is Marco Reus. £35m players now, could be £70m players in 2 years. You have more chances of those players turning into super elite world beaters over someone like Drmic. Not to say the Swiss is a bad player, but he’s a risk. He’s being purchased based on price. Because I refuse to believe he’s the best you can get in the market loaded with £175m cash.

People think spending lots of money is more risky than spending nothing. I think this is the wrong way to look at it. We’re so risk averse these days we’re devaluing the cash in the bank and we’re missing out of bringing in assets that appreciate in value with immediate effect.

Anyway, hope that wasn’t too much of  a ramble. I’m sure there’s something in that…

No, he said it was never about the cup…he’s essentially come out and all but confirmed he’s staying.

Unfortunately it was always going to happen.

I just hope he knows that a lot of fans have already lost all hope with him, and a great number aside from the sycophants are all out of affection for him that would in the past let his inefficiencies slide.

  2. Romford Pele

“I would never live in england again. Spain however, fucking aye.”

Yeah Spain has beautiful weather mate but like Cesc says, their economy is shambolic. It’s why the likes of Mata, Santi and Silva have moved here in recent years.

And like Cesc says, London may have shit weather at times, but it’s as good as it gets really. You can’t get bored here, so much to do.

  3. The Poldi Prince

Anyways, in terma of transfer targets

    Reus or Draxler or Barkley
    sanchez
    remy and drmic
    schneiderlin
    Ginter and richards
    loan tello or deufoleu

massively improved squad. No broken bank.

  4. Mark

Manchester City or Liverpool will win the league. Whichever team triumphs and lifts the trophy after nine months of blood, sweat and tears will have that niggling feeling in the back of their minds… Arsenal were top for 128 days!

  5. Minion

Its funny how Wenger uses injuries for the trashings yet one of the worst teams in the league can get results in Ethiad. Stamford Bridge, Goodison whilw we get trashed. Thats beacuse Poyet is a far better manager than Wenger.

  6. tunnygriffboy

    Bamford

The queation was about the depth in attack. I’ve stated that they have a better starting attack. It wasn’t about them finishing higher in the league or about management though be interesting how Rodgers gets on next season. I’ve not made excuses or tried to rationalize anything I was just asking what Liverpool have in attack other than those that start.

  7. N5

Minion, you hate Wenger we get that, but you wish our players to fuck off elsewhere? are you really a gooner or did you just take the wrong turning on the Seven Sisters Road?

  8. The Poldi Prince

Their economy is fucked. True that. If I was retiring with cash, I’d go Spain.

I love the space and warmth of Brisbane. Lived in London for 9 months but was poor. Might be different now.

  9. Ashwin Gunner

“All that said, while i’m not Theo’s biggest fan, we have no reason to be selling to rivals anymore. Keep him. Let’s continue to build.”

Agree with you. Theo will be the longest serving player in the squad. More over, he is maturing with every game. although its late. but better late than never. I dont want him at any other english club.

and I genuinely feel that he loves the club. he could have left last time. but he didn;t and chose to stay.

BTW Wenger’s and Theo’s contract ends at the same time. :). so Theo might decide to stay back and finally win somethign at Arsenal.

  10. Mark

    Wenger:
‘Yes, Eden come and join us and you could experience the euphoria of being top of the league for the most days in the season’

    Hazard:
    ‘Where do I sign’

  11. Cesc Appeal

    Dream

    I believe so.

That last round of England boys getting contracts was Jenkinson on £25 000, Ramsey and Oxlade on like £60 000, Wilshere on £82 000 and Gibbs on like £35 000 I think. Off the top of my head…can’t be arsed to check.

Ramsey however signed a new deal this season I think and his wages are now alongside Wilshere’s.

So for me, right now, Gibbs and Ramsey are the only wages that are right in terms of merit…even then I’d argue…because you look at how ling a guy like Gotze was on 35 000 Euros at BvB before he got a pay rise. That summer when Fabregas left and we were all over him, he was still on 35 000 a week that whole year I think.

Our wage structure is a mess. Need an outside arbitrator to come in and have a look. He’d probably have a coronary.

The Spanish foreign office has just issued a new law stating you will never be able to go there on holidays again mate
    Adios sangria y paella..
Have you ever been to Dijon ? They’re doing great mustard overthere looool

  13. Minion

We will always be failures under Wenger. There is no point for a top player to stay here. Ozil made a big mistake coming here. he should have gone to PSG. Sagna has seen what a error he has made staying here and is finally leaving.

  14. Demon

Personally i would keep sagna and start playing him as a cb in case one of mert and kos are injured, He has lost pace but it is still enough as a cb, hes strong and has a good header in him,

He could teach the new rb about positioning and shit whilst providing continuity to the team aswell as keeping his wife at the emirates to continue being our eye candy 😉

There is no place on Earth like London…really is a unique city in my opinion.

You’ve got centuries of history all layered on top of each other mixed in with great modern structures like the Shard, world renowned institutions like Westminster, The Bank of England, Royal Courts of Justice…I mean you move round the centre of London and literally everywhere you turn there’s something amazing…the worlds biggest MNC’s come to London, have bases of operations here, put their money here…London is the capital of the world for banking and putting your money…it’s many, many, many, many shopping districts are incredible, it has super high class areas that are a stones throw away from perhaps some more dodgy areas.

    It is truly unique.

  16. Bamford13

    Tunny

Kevin asked, what would Liverpool be without Suarez and Gerrard. My point was that they would still be quite strong because they would still feature three great attacking players in Sterling, Sturridge and Coutinho, and would have ample coverage for Gerrard in Henderson and Lucas.

My point is not that they have more off the bench. They don’t need it. Because they have more dynamic players in their starting IX. If Arsenal loses its two best attacking players, it has nothing — or at least nothing comparable to Liverpool.

  17. TitsMcgee

I don’t give a monkeys how good Hazard was in Ligue Un, it was stupid money for him. Draxler is a kid and a 30 mill plus punt is dangerous. ”

You sir are part of the problem.

Looool, you are on a roll today Mr Karim!! Banned from Spain but allowed into Dijon!! I’ll take that up, then I can come and visit you for a beer! 😆

    It’s beautiful.

  20. Bamford13

The only way we do well next year under Wenger is by accident. If Wenger were to sign a couple of younger, cheaper or unheralded players who play above themselves, then maybe we get lucky.

Without tactics, though, even that is near impossible.

Mediocrity for another two years, and given that everyone else will improve, chance that we finish five next season.

  21. karim

    Agree with Poldi

Who cares about the Bank of England ?
+ London’s cool if you got money whereas I could survive in Barcelona, which is much nicer in my useless opinion

  22. Wallace

“Kevin asked, what would Liverpool be without Suarez and Gerrard. My point was that they would still be quite strong because they would still feature three great attacking players in Sterling, Sturridge and Coutinho”

really? if Suarez had been out 3mths+ that would have meant those 3 playing all game every game. even without europe i think their performance levels would have dropped off considerably.

History + modern comforts and a bustling metropolis.

  25. The Poldi Prince

Each to their own. London has some irrefutable positives, no doubt. Not for everyone though.

I live in Metz now but i’d love to see you all the same bro
Metz is ligue 2 champion, 2 promotions in a row
Come watch Zlatan next season !

  27. N5

Karim, Barca is nice, I’ve always loved Barca, but Poldi said Spain vs England not London vs Barca. So that’s why I pick England. If it was between those two cities, I think I would now go to Barca, just because of the heat and the beauty!

Saying that though, Barca is a rough as hell in some places.

Karim on top of that, the majority speak French there, being Catalonian Spain so you would probably have a nicer time there, if you can’t speak Spanish?

  28. N5

I’d love to Karim and you’d always be more than welcome to come to sunny Hastings to see the arsehole of England (not me, the town).

  29. Minion

Top players should not come to Arsenal as they will get ruined by the cunt of a manager ask Arshavin.

All three are supremely talented players but have they performed to the level needed?Hazard for all his talent will end up trophyless this year. Gotze is whinging about game time and Draxler has done pretty much jack shit all year.”

Is there any wonder we dont win anything with fans like these … seriously mate you need to take up knitting

I speak a little spanish too but these cunts would only speak in Catalonian
It has similarities with French but still is Chinese to me when they speak it
I did love my time in London but Spain corresponds more to my Mediterranean mentality, that’s all

  33. Romford Pele

“I did love my time in London but Spain corresponds more to my Mediterranean mentality, that’s all”

It’s a fair point, depends on the type of person you are. I’m easy either way to be honest. Experienced the quietness and relaxed nature of the countryside and the hustle and bustle of the city. Some just prefer one specific lifestyle.

The tubes, for example, tend to annoy a lot of people but it doesn’t really bother me. You get used to it. It’d be the same in other major cities like New York.

  34. Cesc Appeal

“There is no time between the end of the season and the start of the World Cup. Nobody will do anything before the World Cup starts.”

Ahhh, another Wenger prediction…like “I expect a quiet summer all round Europe.”

  35. N5

Karim, I hear your brother and I get that. Barca has it all and is truly beautiful. I love London, it’s my homeland but Barca is great for holidays. I’m not sure how I would adjust to living there though.

Also I know the Catalonian Spanish is still more Spanish than French, but when I go with my wife, if she can’t understand them in Spanish she asks them to repeat in French, I just stand their nodding hoping neither of them are talking about how big of a dick I am! 😆

  36. Minion

Its obvious why Wenger has no intention of improving the squad. He is competing for top 4 not the league. Its why he did nothing in Jan when were top of the league. He thought top 4 was secured and didn’t care about the league.

  37. TitsMcgee

The only way we do well next year under Wenger is by accident. If Wenger were to sign a couple of younger, cheaper or unheralded players who play above themselves, then maybe we get lucky.”

I really believe Wenger is in for a rude awakening next season. Ge wants to stick around to cash in on all of our poor fans to the tune of 16m over the next two seasons but barring exceptional luck I think we see him drop out of top 4 at least once over the next two years. He really does have his head up his arse that far that he thinks we’re close.

  38. Emiratesstroller

There is too much talk about bringing in ‘world class’ stars or ‘players of huge
potential’ and not enough about addressing our ‘weaknesses’. The positions in
our squad which are substandard do not require £30 million + investments.

    GOALKEEPER
Second string if Fabianski leaves. Szczesny will continue to be first choice.
    RIGHT BACK
First string if Sagna leaves. Jenkinson is not good enough to be promoted.
    CENTRE BACK
Fourth string if Sagna leaves. Good young or experienced defender unless rb
    can play both roles.
    DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD
First String. Someone with physical presence, good positional sense and leadership qualities. This would be my major investment in summer.
    STRIKER
A striker who offers different qualities to Giroud, but complements rather than replies him. Someone like Remy is good enough for that role. He will not
cost earth, but he is capable of scoring 15-20 goals a season.

One should remember that Arsenal lost Ramsey and Walcott for large periods this season. Walcott scored 20+ goals last season and Ramsey was on track to do likewise this season. WE HAD SCORED A SIMILAR NUMBER OF
GOALS TO BOTH LIVERPOOL AND CHELSEA BEFORE THESE TWO GOT INJURED.

Having watched Oxlade Chamberlain when fit I think that he could be outstanding next season and both Gnabry and Campbell show considerable potential. I don’t understand why we would take a risk of spending £35-37 Million on Draxler who has not set the Bundesliga alive this season and is not a prolific goalscorer. Personally I would prefer to pay over odds for holding midfielder.

  39. karim

    Romford
    Exactly
I miss London’s open- mindedness though
People were very nice and helpful whenever I needed a things
    Whereas in France…………..

  40. Cesc Appeal

Even to stand still in terms of position we need huge improvement…there’s a little team from Manchester that didn’t do too well this season that, with a new manager and a mountainous transfer fund will be looking to next season to do some damage.

  41. TitsMcgee

Speaking of cities can anyone who has been to Stockholm tell me about it?

Thinking of taking the missus there.

  42. BlackSnake

I get the feeling that no major transfers would happen until the end of August mainly due to Champions League qualifying. Until that happens we’ll probably be signing freebies, youngsters & nobodies whilst letting go of more experienced players so we can keep on par.

  43. Ashwin Gunner

    jasongms

All the three you mentioned are for 30 mil, because they are not completely proven at the highest level. In around 2 years time all of them will cost more than 50.

Who will be the loser then???

  44. Cesc Appeal

    BlackSnake

If that happens then Wenger deserves all the abuse he’s going to get. No excuse is good enough now. He’s dry of reasons not to spend. They’ve been smashed with fact, logic and the signing of Ozil.

  45. Ashwin Gunner

    Emiratesstroller

We need a bigger squad to keep our best players fit.

if you are buying players, why buy cheap. invest in quality. they will give you more trophies than cheap left out players.

  46. leon

the way i see it as long as you have a manager who picks style over substance you doomed.this team needs dynamic players, players with pace and movement lots of energy with all the central players we have wenger is trying get chaimberlain playing in central position as well when this team is crying out for width, wenger is so tactically off it.

if this manager made half as much effort trying to make the squad better as he does saving the board money this team would be so much better

  47. Romford Pele

“We need a bigger squad to keep our best players fit.”

We have a MASSIVE squad which actually needs to be streamlined. The problem is that Wenger only trusts about 16/17 of the 25-man squad. There are so many players on the books that never get used.

  48. TitsMcgee

“If that happens then Wenger deserves all the abuse he’s going to get.”

He really does bring it on himself.

I mean firstly who does he expect to find on the last day of the window? Ozil again? Ozils are not going to fall into his lap every window.

Secondly one would think that after crashing and burning time and time and time again he would learn to not leave it until the last minute.

So in January the excuse is “nobody moves in January”

Now in summer it’s “nobody moves in a World Cup year”

He’s cornered the market on creating built-in excuses for himself.

People want to prop him up as some martyr that sacrificed his legacy for the club. To me he’s nothing more than a shark trying to “hide” in plain sight as long as possible so he can collect his salary. He’s looking out for himself first and foremost. He’s prolonging his managerial career by “hiding” behind the no money, nobody moves excuses.

  49. BlackSnake

    Im happy with that Cesc!

I cant understand why some people think Wenger is beyond reproach, yes he’s had some success but the other half of his time has been shit and he deserves criticism especially considering his ghastly wage.

  50. Wallace

“We have a MASSIVE squad which actually needs to be streamlined. The problem is that Wenger only trusts about 16/17 of the 25-man squad.”

    yup.

  51. mrz

As the transfer window is about to open soon our main discussion points are how many new players we need, who should we buy to strengthen, etc…

No matter what the rest of the world says Wenger will not buy more than 3 players , that’s for sure. More importantly, he won’t add something which will greatly strengthen the squad(IMO, Ozil was a panic purchase )to fight for the title….Who do u think Wenger would buy??

As I understand, his first priority will be a RB. Since Sagna is leaving he needs an immediately replacement… He will look into the french market and probably buy someone u never heard of from league 1/2 ..

Next, He might try to add a striker of average quality…Loic Remy is the perfect match….he is French and will cost something around 5-8m…classic Wenger buy item…

There is very little possibility that wenger will buy a 3rd player no matter what the requirement is….Still, he might look for a strong DM…his possible buy could be Schneiderlin/Capoue/M’Villa/Barry….

I wonder how people who knows Wenger can even think of Arsenal buying Benzema/Martinez/Draxler!!!

  52. salparadisenyc

    Nice one Pedro,
Great points regarding the Bayern “mutineers”, or not. Think we’d all be shocked to land Martinez, if he makes the move we’ll certainly need to go to the bank. Top player as debated yesterday.

Great to read some other opinions this summer in the Arsenal dead zone.
At least we’ve a world cup to take the edge off.

  53. Carts

“We have been 128 days at the top of the league, so we won the stamina league.”

He didn’t fooking say that……..did he?

  54. andy1886

N5, if you do go to Dijon beware the vinyard cellar tours! They take you round for what seems like hours tasting every minute or two, then right at the end they sell you all these €30-€40 bottles of wine and you’re too pissed to say no! I spent a week there and didn’t see one drop of mustard either…..

  55. jwl

This summer is going to be so stressful. Wenger is very passive and we will wait till final few days to buy players while other teams will be strengthening. Its going to seem all the quality players are being bought while we wait for wenger to pull his finger out. I am not looking forward to this summer at all.

Do we even have scouts anymore or does wenger just use stats on his computer? There have been many questionable purchases recently, and we never really hear from scouts in papers anymore, I wonder how much effort goes into scouting. Sanogo does not remotely look like he’s ready for prime time, KK had a dodgy back that wenger was not aware of, wtf is going on?

  56. Minion

‘The maximum we can lose the league by this season is 7 points’

Wenger truly is a cunt. Shame is he will never leave the club. When he retires he will be a board member for sure.

  57. Kane

“The 12th of June is the first World Cup game. The Champions League final is on the 24th of May and basically two weeks later it is the start of the World Cup.”

“It is unbelievable. There is no time between the end of the season and the start of the World Cup. Nobody will do anything before the World Cup starts,”

NOBODY WILL DO ANYTHING BEFORE THE WORLD CUP.

If a big club signs a big player before the world cup Wenger should walk

“It depends what you call massive. Seven points is nothing, it’s two games,” “My team has shown a remarkable mental attitude in their consistency.“

ITS 3 GAMES! IT IS NOTHING WHEN THINGS ARE DONE, BUT WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON AND YOU CAPITULATE AGAINST YOUR RIVALS 7 POINTS IS MASSIVE

THE MENTAL ATTITUDE OF A PACK OF SACRIFICIAL LAMBS WHO KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO GET SLAUGHTERED EVERY TIME THEY PLAY A BIG SIDE

  58. gambon

    Can’t compare London to Barcelona

Barca is lovely, but it’s like comparing Atlantic City with Vegas. London is awesome.

The Chinese bloke who sells personalised name tags on the Ramblas…..legend!

I agree with what you write and I think that an awful lot of posters need to get real.

Last summer Arsenal spent NETT about £32 million after factoring in sales and exclusive of contract renewals. From recollection they made about £11
    million from sales.

If you are lucky Arsenal will spend this year NETT at most £50-55 million allowing for increased revenue from new sponsorship from Puma.

The only way that figure will increase is if we make sales. The problem there
is that there are very few players who could be offloaded who will generate a
decent transfer fee. Sagna,Bendtner and Fabianski will leave for free.

Personally I don’t see Wenger offloading Vermaelen or Podolski as some suggest. If he sells Vermaelen he will probably need to bring in three extra defenders which is highly unlikely. My gut feeling is Podolski will also stay, because he will not fetch big money in transfer market.

The only players who might realise a transfer fee are Djourou, Coquelin and
Park who are out on loan and will fetch peanuts and possibly Arteta [if he leaves] and Miyaichi and neither will fetch big money. This group will realise
if you are lucky £5-7 million at most.

As I pointed out earlier my guess is that Wenger will bring in 4 new players at
most namely gk,rb/cb,hmf and st. The latter two will cost lion size proportion of our budget. A good holding player will cost today at least £20-25 million and
personally I don’t see Wenger spending more than that on a striker because
Giroud will remain our first string whatever the posters may think.

“It depends what you call massive. Seven points is nothing, it’s two games,” “My team has shown a remarkable mental attitude in their consistency.“

Yea it’s nothing and it could have been overcome with you gave even the slightest of fcuks about the club and/or fans. Passing on Higuain due to frugality and then botching the Suarez deal(yes passing on one player to go try get another and ending up with neither is botching) then compounding it by not strengthening in January.

So basically we came up a couple of games short when even the slightest of help would have had us at the very least in with a shot on the last day.

All because he is obsessed with saving a penny here or there like we are West Ham UTD.

  61. Romford Pele

“Bernard: Arsenal didn’t have the money to sign me.”

Lol well that’s a blatant lie obviously.

“When a man is tired of London he’s tired of life” – Dr Johnson

Quite apart from its wonderful amenities and attractions, and its history etc etc, there is a certain buzz about London that is not replicated in any other city I have ever visited. Its cultural diversity is a great asset and only adds to the fascination of the place. I have lived elsewhere and never been happy, always pleased to return to my home town. Even the climate is not that bad, at least when it rains there’s plenty of things to see and do inside.

  63. Bacaryisgod

Pedro-hate to say it but the post today was the Le Grove equivalent of the Stamford Bridge result. Worst of the season.

-You point out Man City’s squad depth and striker talent (4 world or International class strikers at 100 million in transfer fees before huge wages) without mentioning their FIFA battles over breaking the rules. There’s a direct correlation. It’s why they can afford to take risks in the first place and other teams can’t. They can spend countless millions on flops until they get it right. Chelsea is the same way. You can’t mention missing out on Hazard without remembering the 85 million they blew on Torres and Shevchenko. How you can hold these two clubs up in a positive light compared with Arsenal blows me away.

-Enough with the injury talk! Preaching to the choir for what seems the eighth week in a row. We agree that’s the core problem along with the failure to land a top striker in summer or January. But our bench does have threats if that is solved. Podolski and Ox would both be there with a fully fit squad.

In fairness, you’ve had a mostly very good season and definitely qualify for the football blog Champions League although you slumped considerably in March and April!

  64. Ben

The talent in Germany is ridiculous, ter Stegen,Leno,Adler,S.Bender, Kruse,Kiesling,Gomez not on the PROVISIONAL squad.

  65. TitsMcgee

“didn’t have the money” = “didn’t want to spend the money”

    Sounds like another WEnger dither-job.

  66. Minion

With the Bernard news its shocking how he signer Ozil. My guess is the board forced Ozil on him.

  67. Emiratesstroller

    Zeus

I would take the Bernard story with a pinch of salt.

There were probably two reasons why Arsenal did not buy him.

    1. There are a lot of complications with South American players because of their third party ownership deals. Arsenal tend to shy away from such deals.

    2. Bernard was untested on European Circuit and is rather small and lightweight.

He may turn out to be a great player but on this occasion I think that Arsenal made right decision. In any event we would not have bought both Ozil and Bernard.

  68. Minion

I also believe he did not sign Arshavin which is why he played him out of position and ruined a world class player which is what he will do to Ozil by not surrounding him with the forwards he needs to be effective

  69. Ben

    Zeus,
Benard doesn’t even start for Shahkter and wont start for Brazil either. Way too lightweight and tiny for the EPL.

  70. Minion

Notice how he kept playing Ozil in every match with no rest and even the coventry match. Since 42m was paid for Ozil he will milk every thing out oh him. I really fear for Ozil.

  71. grooveydaddy

    I’d totally forgotten about Bernard.

I seem to remember vaguely that he was linked to a lot of top teams but ended up at Shakhtar Dontesk??

  72. london gunner

London is awesome if your rich!

If your poor and now even if your averagely wealthy its pretty shit tbh and Its getting much much worse.

All the working class and lower middle class are getting priced out of zones 1 and 2.

I live in Finsbury park used to be an pretty dodgy area now loads of posh apartments have sprung up, big old victorian houses turned into yuppie flats.

Across the road from me there are people of a similar age 24-26 living in super posh pads… there flats have been bought up by the bank of mummie and daddie all of them have posh accents and I imagine are from outside london oxford, cambridge and the like!

Sucks coz prices are crazy high my older sister has a decently paid job but has to live in the suburbs.

I am gonna move out to live in a house with some mates in fucking forest gate EPIC TREK!

Also the general atmosphere of london is getting worse is becoming more and more elite status bullshit… when you go to a city like bristol everyone is so much more friendly and less interested in how much you earn.

  73. jwl

I grew up in toronto, very boring city with little charm, and I couldn’t believe London when I first arrived with all the history, culture, nightlife … etc. Only city comparable to London is New York, get similar vibes in NY.

I loved taking ecstasy, going to clubs and dancing my arse off, and then taking a break at 3 or 4 am and go outside and wander around central London high as a kite. It was awesome, I enjoy history and walking around stoned is good fun.

  74. london gunner

    Isn’t Bernard 5’4?

    I think 5’6 is borderline

But allot of players who are 5’7 are epic Hazard Messi Silva… I suppose you get the benefits of being short but not as bad detriments as any shorter.

  75. Minion

You know what pisses me off is our players have no fight are a bunch of cowards. If any team shows any fight they crumble. We are the only team like this team. Everyteam are fighters and play with no fear.

Just watch our match at SB and Athletico’s

    We are completely scared shitless

Atheltico are fearless and match every physical fight.

  76. Carts

I think we’ll recoup at least £20m. Pretty much all the names you mentioned will definitely leave. As will Pod and Verm..

Verm is odds on to leave, whereas Pod’s position hinges on whether we secure a Draxler/Pedro/ Di Maria player

  77. london gunner

London as a teenager was brilliant though. going to illegal Warehouse raves at 16 in Hackney Wick and Tottenham Hale! Full of young hot teens dancing in bras and panties. Fingering girls on the dancefloor Lol lots of sweaty minge about.

When I went to Uni peeps from the small towns and villages had had such a tame upbringing compared to me and were so much less street savy. They were amazed by the simplest things! Sounding like a condescending cunt but it is what it is

  78. salparadisenyc

London one of the few great park cities in the world.
What a town, one of the top three for me.

  79. london gunner

We really should of kept Sagna as a CB I love Mert he is quality and should be first team but there are times when we need to play with 2 defenders with pace.

At those times Sagna would be a great tactical addition him and . I think he could do it because his very disciplined and also because he may be only 5’9 but his incredibly good in the air at winning aerial duels he makes the majority of our clearances at times.

andy1886, thanks for the advise mate. Dijon is where the missis is from which is why Karim was saying I should go there. He used to live in the town next door to it also.

If I do go there I will make sure to take your advise though.

  82. Dimitri

Tits Mcgee I would advise against ever going to stockholm if you’re with a bird, she will look disgusting to you from the moment you set your eyes on Swedish girls. Nice place for a trip though.

Never did get how anyone could like London. If you’ve got millions and can live in Knightsbridge sure, but if you’ve got money best place is USA anyway. Only about 1% of English girls don’t make you feel sick when you look at them.

  83. tunnygriffboy

Gazidas has said a 3 year deal has been on the table for Sagna for over a year. Rumours have said it’s 80k a week. That is a very good deal in my opinion.

    N5

Who do you think is going to win La Liga!

Its between Atletico and Barca Now

I would be so disappointed if Barca beat AM on the final day as they really doesn’t deserve it this season!

  85. london gunner

    Dimitri

English girls are really not that hot compared to say Czech or Croatian girls.

But trust me in Manchester the girls are very good looking! A london girl whose an 8/10 would be a 5/10 in Manchester.

  86. Romford Pele

“Only about 1% of English girls don’t make you feel sick when you look at them.”

I dunno where you look for English girls but that’s definitely not true. Then again, I love home comforts. Love London, love England!

  87. grooveydaddy

‘I would be so disappointed if
Barca beat AM on the final day
as they really doesn’t deserve it
    this season!’

Isn’t that what winning titles are all about? Beating your direct rival on the last day??

I get what you mean though. It would be a shame for Atletico to go potless this year. I’m hoping they do the double.

  88. Romford Pele

I think Madrid threw the title by not winning yesterday. Atletico for the title, Real for the CL

  89. Dimitri

I was visiting a friend up in Manchester just recently, what a dump that place was, no wonder Van Rapie’s missus was not please. It’s got nice girls sure, but the ratios didn’t stand out any more than London.

Problem with any decent looking English bird is they are now going for those skinny jean wearing queers with those made in chelsea haircuts that all those woofter southampton players seem to have or a guy with loads of money, and the attitudes are terrible because they are having their arses kissed all day by a bunch of thirsty slobs telling her how perfect she is.

Eastern European girls hell to the yeah in terms of the numbers being better, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the scandis, if you have a pulse you’re already more exciting than any Swedish guy.

  90. london gunner

    Romford Pele

You know when you see a group of females and there is usually one or two of the group who are exceptionally hotter than their friends and other females around the area.

Well in Czech Republic/Sweden/Croatia/parts of Italy and Spain imagine that that hot girls is par for the course shes average in that country and her hotter friend is just insane your left wondering how can she actually be that pretty!

I was on the beach in ibiza i went to the english area and it was average slags I spent more time on the italian and the spanish beaches and the women were on another level looked straight out of a music video/ modeling shoot.

  91. Romford Pele

“Problem with any decent looking English bird is they are now going for those skinny jean wearing queers with those made in chelsea haircuts that all those woofter southampton players seem to have”

Lol that’s quite apt for us Essex guys too!

I do agree that London girls can be quite snobbish, comes with the territory – then again, I like a girl with attitude! Girls up north are much friendlier though and easier to get into bed.

  92. Revving Kevin

    Dimitri

So only 1% of English girls don’t make you sick when you look at them!

I wonder what percentage of these girls would be sick having to look at your mug and ugly personality?

Some English Women are beautiful mate, every Nation has it’s ugly people, as you yourself prove.

Obviously you have never been to the UK. If you really believe only Knightsbridge is worth living in, you have no idea what you are talking about.

  93. follow the money

I’m sure when the next manager finally comes in we will still find endless things to complain about

  94. Romford Pele

Looool London, you know what, i’ve never slept with a European girl before. It’s not that I discriminate, it’s just a situation which has never arisen really though I take your word and i’m sure it’s great.

I know what people mean about trashy and fat English girls but that doesn’t do justice to some of the nice ones who look very good as well.

Each to their own though; always been a fan of curvy girls personally. Note, curvy not fat, there’s a distinct difference!

  95. Romford Pele

“I’m sure when the next manager finally comes in we will still find endless things to complain about”

Lol everyone loves a good moan, that will never stop.

  96. follow the money

Oops what the hell happened? That post posted before I was finished. Weird. Here’s the complete post.

I’m sure when the next manager finally comes in we will still find endless things to complain about but I will be very happy when we don’t have to keep complaining about Wenger’s particular set of issues because they reek of cowardice. I’ve never seen a PL manager get his ass beat in t

  97. Dan Ahern

Nice blog as per usual, Pedro.

As to the question, why move from Bayern to Arsenal, you know the answer. There are two reasons to move, money or glory.

Obviously we’re a big step down in the glory department. But we can offer a big payday. And in Javi’s case we’re doing okay in the glory department’s subbranches, preferred position/style and playing time.

(Oh, one more special office that helps the appeal: agent greed.)

There is a tiny, tiny chance of anything happening, but I wouldn’t totally rule it out. You never know in football.

  98. Romford Pele

Yeah London Brazilian girls look awesome – from what i’ve seen anyway. Definitely on my list for the future!

  99. Arsene's Nurse

Always cracks me up to see someone post a “if we buy A then how do X,Y and Z fit in?”

Has anyone seen how many injuries we get? Go back and look at the games where we were fielding 16 year old reserve team players on the bench because there was no-one else available.

Players will always get games at Arsenal (unless they are on Wenger’s naughty list) because we are in 4 competitions and top the injury table for most of the year.

We need that depth so we are not playing the likes of Ozil at Coventry in the winter for an FA Cup tie.

  100. Dimitri

Women in the west have gone too far with this curvy shit. When I think of curvy I think Salma Hayek or something like that, but they are trying to convince the world that fat=curvy lol.

  101. london gunner

    N5

You putting any money on it?

I am thinking of putting 5 k on AM to win title would get 9,000 in return.

Imagine if they lost though! would probs punch a wall

  102. Dan Ahern

I visited London for the first time a little while ago and I have to say, I was actually impressed with the standard of attractiveness. Dig most the styles that are in right now as well.

I mean no offense, just, it was better than what I expected. No judgement here, I myself am of course hideous.

  103. Romford Pele

“but they are trying to convince the world that fat=curvy lol.”

Who is trying to do so?

  104. Cesc Appeal

I’m going to go out on a limb here and reservedly say that England, is the best place in the whole entire Universe and beyond ever.

  105. Dimitri

Any bird who is overweight and is trying to convince you they are natural curves, a very large number, or one of those dove adverts where all those fat birds pose in their underwear and say stuff like ‘real women have curves’

  106. N5

Dimitri it’s quite offensive to say all bar one percent of England is ugly, that’s like me saying all but 1% of Greek women are as hairy as Chewbacca. It’s not true as it’s 2% but you get my drift.

  107. london gunner

England is great but I imagine people on NY, Berlin, Miami, LA, Paris, Barcelona are having the same convo’s as us.

Most humans love what they know!

I don’t really prescribe to the theory London is the best place because I haven’t lived in every country/ city in the world For all I know some other place could have a better quality of life or worse.

I think the city taken alone is great but I do think the work/ social leisure time mix isn’t very good.. therefore I believe if your looking at quality of life London isn’t the best its more of a rat race work work mentality! (though Asia is far worse than this)

  108. Bacaryisgod

As for risk aversion, I would think the greatest gamble taken by a team in recent years was the Emirates build.

When it comes to risk, it’s probably true you can’t have tremendous success without a certain amount of it (unless you inherit oil from your family or political cronies). However, Portsmouth, Leeds and QPR were also huge risk takers. As with everything, it cuts both ways.

  109. WengerEagle

To be fair Dmitiri’s probably just frustrated that Greece’s economy is a joke.

Many a plate has been fucked against the wall in the last few years in Greece.

  110. SpanishDave

Most people live in Spain because of the sun, they overlook the corruption, poor standards, filthy streets, constant lies by polititians, creed and so on.
Taxes are now rising fast to meet the debts, or just paying the interest on the debts, so players who enjoyed the priviledged sport tax are having to pay the same as everyone else.
Its now cheaper to live in the uk, so players heads can be turned.
Wenger willbe the same old dick this summer, he will never change his ways. He has now convinced himself that hes had a good season with some back luck.
He has forgotten the big defeats, and the problems of a small squad.
The board will soak up winning of the fa cup as justification to giving him a new contract.
All is well in the land of Nod
