Arsene gets a free ride through risk aversion

Ok, so we’r getting into off-season territory, so I’m not sure how I’m going to keep things going this summer.

If you are an excellent writer and you have an editorial idea, float it past me and send it in. Make sure it’s interesting, loaded with opinion and grammatically correct.

Unlike most of my stuff.

Badum tscchhhhh!

Wasn’t even a joke.

Right, what have we on the plate of football today?

Errr…. Arsenal fans have forced BT to stop recording outside of the ground because of the bad language. OMG. Bad language. Isn’t it ridiculous that we’re in the 21st century and people will complain if they hear a naughty word on the TV. I mean, honestly, 20 people out of 5 million watching and they have to change the way they schedule shows because boring people are affronted. It’s pathetic.

What else are we talking about?

Javi Martinez is apparently subject of a sensational £28m bid from Arsenal (The Telegraph didn’t call it sensational, another headline I saw did). Errr… sensational? He cost £35m before he was a European Champion. I can’t imagine he’s leaving for anything less than £40m considering he’s 25 and an incredible player. He’s exactly the sort of player we could do with, he’s mobile, powerful, 6ft3 and full of tenacious rage. He’s also technically brilliant.

… begs the question, why would he leave?

Well, he’s not happy about playing in a static defensive midfield position. I think he wants to play more Ramsey / Vieira-esque. I still think there’s room for that type of player in our team. It’s not like we’re looking for a Gilberto, we need energy in our midfield to replace the weary legs of Arteta.

However, I don’t see this happening. I really don’t.

I find it quite incredible that a team as well stocked with cash and glory as Bayern are having this player exodus talk.

So far, we’ve got:

Kroos > United

Mueller > United

Martinez > Arsenal

Gotze > Arsenal

Can’t see all those guys moving, at the very worst, they just don’t like the competition on offer at Bayern. I doubt it though, who wouldn’t want to play for Pep G? Also, on the Martinez story, I don’t mean to be a total realist here, but move from Bayern to Arsenal? Why? Same with Bayern to United? Why?

Manchester City as good as tied up the Premier League last night. They spanked a terrible Aston Villa out of sight in the second half and edged closer to their second league title. Two goals from Dzeko proved what having a squad stocked full of talent can do for you. He’s bagged  27 odd goals this season. An exceptional return for a player who had been pushed aside by Jovetic and Negredo.

When people harp on about ‘if only we had Ramsey and Theo fit’. I think they forget that other teams have suffered injuries this year. City have gone large chunks without Aguerro, but they had a back up. I don’t think you can ever bank on a full season with your best players. We can definitely improve it, but it goes beyond just the injury, it’s about keeping your best players fresh. We were spanked heavily by City with Aaron in the side.

The way you foster fitness isn’t by simply amending training and rotating a bit. You’ve also got to look at the depth of your squad.

Arsene never talks about squad depth (he called it an illusion in the Shreeves interview). He always talks about the reaction he has to take to injuries and the toll that has on the squad. I’m shocked he’s not worked out that the injuries he has happen because his squad isn’t deep enough with quality, so he doesn’t rotate. The starting 11 get tired, then injured… then that same process happens to the reserves.

Arsene might only be able to make 3 major 1st team signings this summer, but there’s no reason he can’t boost our bench with midrange players with attributes. Now, I’m not suggesting Puncheon, but when he played against Liverpool the other night, his pace stretched Liverpool and forced them to defend basically on their goal line. He’s not the greatest player in the world, but off the bench, 70 minutes to go, he’s asking questions.

Who is asking questions of our bench at the moment?

Monreal. The cheeky chappy.

Did anyone see the quotes from Arsene when talking about Hazard?

‘Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn’t make.

‘He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well.’

Now, if Wenger thought he’d turn into one of those players, why couldn’t he match the Chelsea offer. We had the money in 2011? He was clearly going to be a world beater. Billy Beane said that if a player is smashing it in his teens, he’ll be a worldy most of the time. Hazard was an exceptional teen. So why didn’t we punt for him? He’s an educated risk… Ligue One player of the year twice before he was 20. Fast, low centre of gravity, goals, assists… great technique. Buy him for £35m… could be worth £50m within 2 seasons.

‘The biggest risk is not taking any risk… in a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks’

That quote is from Mark Zuckerberg. Now, I know Facebook and Football is a but different, but my point here is that we spunked all our risk into the stadium. Then we gave up. We’ll have £170m in the bank this summer, that’s been sitting there, losing value for years. Why? Because the manager is petrified of risk because it makes him accountable. Wenger computes risk with cost. So his cheap risks are not deemed as failures, when in the context of having massive amounts of money his risks are actually pretty ridiculous.

He’s right as well, I see fans justifying our shit show of a season with spend totals. Wenger gets a free ride for spending the 5th highest amount in the league, despite having enough cash to spend the most. Why does he get a free ride for having a poor season with the budget to have a great one? He didn’t do the best with what he had. Surely inaction is worst trait in sport?

Juan Mata – £22m (Wenger pulls the plug) >>> Opts for Gervinho (£8m) + Chamberlain (£15m)

The outcome? Chelsea sign a player who helps them win a bunch of trophies as well as picking up player of the year for them twice. Arsenal flunk out with Gervinho and Chamberlain is still a way of being the finished article.

The cost of taking two lesser risks is that we forfeited trophies. The expense of Mata was recouped almost twice by Chelsea 3 years later.

High cost players are generally high cost because they have a talent premium. It’s not up to me to tell you who has premium talent. That’s not my job. However, someone like Draxler is on my radar as is Marco Reus. £35m players now, could be £70m players in 2 years. You have more chances of those players turning into super elite world beaters over someone like Drmic. Not to say the Swiss is a bad player, but he’s a risk. He’s being purchased based on price. Because I refuse to believe he’s the best you can get in the market loaded with £175m cash.

People think spending lots of money is more risky than spending nothing. I think this is the wrong way to look at it. We’re so risk averse these days we’re devaluing the cash in the bank and we’re missing out of bringing in assets that appreciate in value with immediate effect.

Anyway, hope that wasn’t too much of  a ramble. I’m sure there’s something in that…

Good post Pedro. I like the part on risk makes me even more infuriated that we don’t spend and missed out on Mata, Hazard etc

  2. Romford Pele

    Morning Pedro et all.

    Good post.

Nothing really to add apart from this summer is gonna be a long waiting game. My expectations have been dumbed down so anything we do complete will be a surprise. You’re right about Martinez too.

  3. N5

How long until they ban audio during matches then, because I head the word cunt twice during a Sunday match, the day of god ruined by football yobs saying cunt. I almost chocked on my prawn sandwich.

  4. Nickie

you have the money to really treat yourself. You’re so looking forward to that A la carte steak. You take one more look at your wallet, you opt for macdonalds instead and say next time

  5. shad

I think Wenger wouldn’t buy Martinez simply because his hard on for Cesc has never died down and he will always leave that as an option for the “prodigal son”to come back home. smdh.

  6. Tai Obasi, Lagos

Great post. Why wouldn’t an Arsenal player win World Player of the year? Chelsea has a potential in Hazard. Man City has Yaya Toure, Liverpool has Suarez…why not Arsenal go for Draxer?

  7. Romford Pele

Wenger confirms Kos is close to an extension. Great news.

So bar Theo, everyone is locked into a long-term contract

  8. tunnygriffboy

Interesting quotes from Gazidis on gunnersphere where he took part in supporters club meeting. He made comments on:

Injuries. We are enhancing our medical and sports science facilities which should yield results next season

Jonkers has started work on the academy. He has brought in new systems and training methods. He is likeiy to attract youngsters due to his excellent reputation.

Sagna has had a 3 yr deal on the table for over a year at a good level.

  9. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

So the first player off the pr machine is…..
    Javi

Will the winning tiicket holder please make their way to the box office.
Pay their 1,800 for the west upper season ticket please.

Second unrealistic target will be announced on Monday .

  10. Dream10

    Morning Grovers

Pretty sure the biggest stumbling block were the wages. AW did not want a player who makes twice as much as anybody else. Parity in wages. Socialist wage structure.

Also, why was the agent meeting Arsene? Gazidis just here at the club as a corporate face. A placeholder. Remember we wanted the Celtic CEO to become our chief executive, but he was not interested. Most likely to do with Arsene’s control.

  11. Romford Pele

“Pretty sure the biggest stumbling block were the wages”

This shouldn’t really be a problem anymore since Ozil earns far and away more than any other player.

  12. Romford Pele

“Romford you seen his wife ?”

Lol RSPC, who are you talking about here? Ozil or Sagna? Ozil isn’t married, Sagna is. Both have very fine looking partners though!

  13. tunnygriffboy

As I remember wasn’t Hazard whoring himself around to the club with the best deal ? Or am I imagining things. He certainly wasn’t whoring himself to Maureen. He’s too much of a maverick and individual for that. I know this is sacrilige but he would have thrived under Wenger.

  14. Dream10

    Romford Pele

If Theo was healthy, bet Man City would sell Navas and buy Walcott to increase their homegrown quota. I would imagine that Walcott, Fabregas and Wilshere will be targeted by them in the next year.

  15. Romford Pele

Wenger: “In my experience, in a World Cup year, the transfer business does not get done early”

Lol let the heart attacks commence.

  16. Wallace

just spent 45mins wading through that Ozil Bild interview. man, footballers never say anything interesting. some hilariously direct questions from the interviewer though.

  17. Romford Pele

    Dream10.

Walcott could be an option for City but I doubt we’ll wanna spend now after eight years of development. He’s now at a point where he can produce consistent numbers in terms of goals/assists so it’s counterproductive to sell.

Regardless of what people wanna say, Wilshere is still the Arsenal darling. He ain’t going anywhere.

  18. tunnygriffboy

City will have to be careful who they buy now. They will have to look carefully at the figures. If FFP is fining them and limiting their CL squad they don’t want to mess up again. They may have to ship some players first before buying in. Jovetic anyone ?

Fantastic news re kos. Get it done asap.

I think it’s right we enquire about Martinez. It’s what we want isn’t it. Mind you a Bayern spokesman has said in Build that they don”t want to sell him.

  19. Dream10

Roman Abramovich promised to triple his Lille wages. Does not like something Arsenal would do.

  20. Hitman49

    @9jagunner

    Ha ha ha

We all know first is for oil money and Russian mafia !

    4th is the new 1st !

I am just about to parade my trophy around my living room see !!!.

    Team i’d play this weekend:

    Szcz
    Jenks Sagna Verm Monreal
    Flamini Wilshere
    Santi Rosicky Poldi
    Sanogo

    Bench
    Fabianski
    Mert
    Kos
    Ramsey
    Arteta
    Kim K
    Giroud

  22. gee

    Morning Pedro,
Really good points raised again today, gonna miss these daily posts over the Summer. Roll on next season and hopefully Arsene has read a few of these write-ups of yours and done something about it. I doubt it, but it would be nice. I hate the daily transfer bollocks that come out of the media. How can anyone believe what is written these days. Hype and cobblers. Wish we could plan ahead and have something in place before the season ends.

  23. Dream10

Luis Enrique interested in signing Pogba and Kompany for Barcelona. Wants more power in the team.

  24. Romford Pele

    Tunny,

I forgot about Diaby. Yeah he’s fit so he may well get a run out. Could take Santi out of the team and put him in.

Ramsey is fit again, Wenger confirmed this morning. No need for him or Ozil to play though.

  25. Romford Pele

“Ps. He won’t play that team he wants 79 points.”

Who cares really? We’ve got fourth, no need to take a risk with the cup final 9 days away.

  26. Dream10

Hope The Ox is fit for the final as well.

    FA Cup XI
    – Usual back five
    – Arteta, Ramsey
    – Cazorla,Ozil,Podolski (will score twice)
    – Girude

  27. Wallace

    tunny

now that Norwich are pretty much down i think Wenger will mix it up. Wilshere & Diaby(at some point) definitely, and maybe Akpom, Zelalem, Bellerin on the bench..

  28. Dan T

Do you ever lose homegrown status? If Fabregas came back to the EPL would he still be classed as homegrown?

  29. Dream10

Anyone think Zelalem will struggle to nail down a squad place in three years time?
Have not been impressed with the little I have seen of him.

  30. Gregg

The blogger asked why Martinez wouldn’t be happy playing for Pep. Well for the same reason as Toure. Busquets might be happy to play that restricted static role but it’s criminal to kerb the talent that Toure and Martinez have. Both players have so much more to offer than two yard first time passes to a ‘Xavi’.

  31. Wallace

yup, i think Martinez & Schweinsteiger, especially, probably enjoyed things far more pre-Pep. if Martinez is a possibility i think we should go all out.

  32. Dan T

I’ve only really seen him in pre-season but I was very impressed with his range of passing and his vision. I think a few years in the gym and he could be good. Really haven’t seen him consistently enough to know for sure – would be nice to get another look at him at the weekend though.

exactly, his ability to thread a pass up the field, looked exciting, id he could pick somebody formward he tried. Long way off but he definitely looked a talent.

  34. TrillBilly

His comments wrt Hazard infuriate me. We go from apparently having a precontract signed with him having sold Nasri and Cesc to not having the funds or balls to sign him. Wenger has the fear and that fear is self limiting which limitss the club.

The Mata transfer was another shambles as was Wenger having said we were close to signing Ronaldo.

The only player in recent years we’ve beat another club to was Ramsey.

  35. Romford Pele

“So that would apply for any team in the EPL not just for the team that ‘grew’ him?”

Yes mate. From when you’ve spent three years at a club between the ages of 16-21, you’re classed as homegrown. It’s another part of the reason Wenger embarked on his project youth. Even if Cesc was to go to say a Man City, he’s still classed as homegrown.

  36. Nickie

    Your Comment Here
How come the German teams, bayern in particular are able to conclude transfer deals during the season??????????????

  38. Samir

If Wenger’s saying he’s only signing three players, I’d be happy with:
    Javi Martinez
    Morata
    Draxler/Cuadrado

Then a few squad players last minute.

Obviously, if Sagna, Fabianski and/ or Vermaelen leave we’d need adequate replacements for them:
    Cheap GK
    Debuchy
    Ginter

  39. Johnty79

Ramsay only joined arsenal as we offered 20k and united 5k….

For gods sake when does diabys contract end or have they give all dead end players the djourou unlimited extension clause.

  40. Romford Pele

“Have not been impressed with the little I have seen of him.”

Yeah i’m not a fan, much prefer Dan Crowley. He’s a good passer of the ball but doesn’t really appear exceptional in any other area. Needs to hit the gym.

  41. Gregg

Remy would be an underwhelming signing for me, but there is a dearth of top quality strikers, that would be available. The game has changed a bit with the way Madrid, Barca and Bayern utilise there front three.

Remy is like your Louis Saha, very capable, good back-up to rest your main forward. Trouble is, we don’t have that at all. Remy has been around the scene for a long, long time. We’ve had ample opportunities to get him so why now ? what could he be displaying now that he hasn’t before ?

  42. Al

Why would anyone want to leave Real Madrid to come too Arsenal?

Well we know why…maybe they feel undervalued, want a new challenge, live in London or be the main man.

Same reason why a player from Bayern would want to leave them to play for Arsenal.

The fact is top world class talent do not just want to sit on the bench of not be an integral part of the team. That’s what we can offer these guys

  43. TrillBilly

    Samir

    Agree..

Id also add Balotelli and Tello to that list and if Sagna leaves Coleman must be easily getable?

Not too keen on Remy. What has he actually done? When I think of Remy I think of Newcastle and their 2nd rate french squad and that upsets me

  46. Gregg

    @Nickie

Agreed with Remy. He was identified as a talent in France years and years ago but it never came to fruition. He’s now 27 ? no top side has an interest in him and all of a sudden he’s the answer to our forward line ? We could have signed this guy many times, so why now. Don’t get me wrong I think he could score goals in our set up but he’s more of a back up to the main man sort of player, at a club that’s looking to be amongst Europes elite

  47. Romford Pele

“We could have signed this guy many times, so why now. Don’t get me wrong I think he could score goals in our set up but he’s more of a back up to the main man sort of player, at a club that’s looking to be amongst Europes elite”

    Agreed

  48. DUIFG

Lot of people slagging remy but not really bringing any solutions to the table re ST. He may well be the best we can get.

  49. Ashwin Gunner

    Good morning Pedro and all.

reality is, we may be linked with the best player in the world. but we will eventually end up with a ligue 2 player, who all the papers will claim to be next Henry, Viera and stuff.

So relax. going to be loonnnnng summer. but good thing is we have World cup to ease the pain. 🙂

  50. Romford Pele

    “Jackson/Balotelli/Benzema/Lallana”

How does Lallana relate to the aforementioned three?

  51. Nickie

    Gregg

Yeah he was the “next Henry” lol was quite injury prone in his earlier years. There is such a lack of strikers that are realistic that gets the blood pumping. I don’t want to settle for someone who is mediocre but if push comes to shove and we are sitting on deadline day i’d take anyone haha.

Chamakh in an emotional return to the club anyone?

  52. Santos

    Romford and co

Lallana could really step up with us, although we may need a ready-made striker sadly.

  53. Nickie

    CF solutions

    Benteke
    Bony (not really favoured)
    Mandzukic
    Drmic (never seen him play)
    Ba?
    Pato
    Jovetic/Negredo

  54. WengerEagle

    Nickie

Out of all them I’d say only Jovetic is good enough tom start up front for us and tbh I’m more going with potential on Jovetic he’s not a proven WC marksman.

Mandzukic is very good but he’s not mobile or dynamic enough IMO.
Pato could have been as good as Aguero but injuries destroyed him.
The rest should only be backup strikers, not starters.

  55. Santos

Lol, you guys should stop the Lallana bashing. If managed properly, he could be a good winger/4econd striker. He has the speed and skill.

  56. karim

Ivan Gazidis is a snake and people asking such ” fundamental ” questions about silver or gold membership are sheep
    Reminds me of Arsene’s Google Q /A
    Depressing to say the least

  57. Dream10

Any player that we sign this summer has to have great athletic quality. We don’t have room for players who depend on guile/craftiness/reading of the game

Mert, Arteta, Monreal, Cazorla use guile/craftiness/reading of the game

I want to see these types

    Coleman,Aurier,Benatia,Rodriguez,Martinez,Schneiderlin,Gustavo,Reus,Lucas Moura,Doumbia,Cavani,Diego Costa,Firmino,Pedro

  58. WengerEagle

Also Lavezzi’s not a playmaker, he’s a direct sprinter so he’s too similar to Theo and Ox.

We need a wide playmaker to balance out the team and help Mesut break down defences.

  59. Leedsgunner

Although Wenger proudly states that we were at the head of the table for 128 days during the season — he doesn’t seem to really understand that it only matters who was at the top at the every end.

What’s he looking for? A pat on the back? A medal for competing?

With the wage packet he takes home, competing for the title is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM we should expect from him.

    Always excuses, never results.

  60. Gregg

Remy will tick a box for Wenger because he will play him across the front three positions. I think Costa to Chelsea is a done deal and Lukaku will be the back up there next season. There aren’t many great forwards around and who are available, so I guess Wenger will rely on goals from elsewhere as being the way forward.

  61. Romford Pele

“Lavezzi is also a good shout and can offer something great for another 3 years max”

Like Eagle says, he’s not really what we need unless you plan to play him upfront. He’s 29 and is a starter for PSG so why would he be coming here? I think there are better options

  62. Santos

We may name names here, but the naughty Economics professor will show his obstinacy and lack of touch with the market by buying Drmic, Gonalons, Delph and Tomkins

  63. N5

Karim: Reminds me of Arsene’s Google Q /A

Lol, where do you like to go on your holiday Wenger?

*these questions are not veted, honest! people didn’t care about strikers and money, they care where Wenger goes for his vacations!!!

  64. Nickie

Just a few ideas obviously I wouldn’t like to settle for those. I just think they’re better solutions to Remy. I would love to see a Benzema or Costa join

  65. Dream10

    Wenger Eagle

For me, Isco the best of the three. Like Hazard, I think he is best on the left. On the left like where Nasri plays for City with two forwards of quality in front of him. As long as he relied upon to be a goalscorer.

Isco is the heir to the great Iniesta.

  66. Emiratesstroller

    Pedro

Before we start with any transfer activity the club needs to make an accurate analysis of our season.

What is clear is that we are reasonably efficient against ‘weak Premier League’ opposition, but our record against top teams apart from Spurs is awful particularly away from home. That is not simply down to our set of injuries.

Most of these teams used the same formula against us and highlighted our
weaknesses. The fact is that we conceded 21 out of a total 41 goals in just 5 away defeats against Man City [6], Chelsea [6],Liverpool [5], Everton [3] and Man Utd [1].

The most glaring weakness is the lack of players in midfield who are good
defenders and the fact that there was an over dependence on one player Giroud to score goals. If you lack offensive options then it is always very
easy for opposition to play the way they did.

The priorities for next season are to replace Sagna, which will cost money,
to replace Arteta with a physically strong and positionally disciplined midfielder and find a forward who can either complement or substitute for Giroud when required to do so.

    RIGHT FULL BACK
We may need two new defenders, because Sagna was not just our first string
rfb, but also could play as a centre back option if required as well.

    HOLDING MIDFIELDER
We need to find a powerful, disciplined and mobile player to complement
skills in midfield, and not leave gaping gaps that have been seen this season.
Bender or Martinez are type of players required who if added to Ramsey will
offer better cover than we have seen.

    STRIKER
Wenger is not going to spend £50 million plus or £200,000 pw + on wages which a top striker will command. Also I believe that Giroud is still classified as regular first string whatever bloggers may think. Therefore he is much
more likely to go for a player who can complement or replace Giroud as and
    when required.

Good options at more affordable prices can be found in EPL. They may not be
brilliant but they will certainly improve our squad when compared with likes
    of Bendtner and Sanogo.

    LEFT WING
This has been discussed many times and a lot of names have been brought
up as possible acquisitions e.g. Draxler,Reus,Griezmann and now Goetze.
Most are going to cost an arm and a leg if available.

My view is that we do have plenty of good players who can play the position.
Apart from Cazorla and Podolski players like Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gnabry need to be played and can both do so on left. Also Campbell may be
brought back to club and he looks like a useful potential addition.

Money is not unlimited and most will need to be spent on the three critical
positions with some money also needing to be spent on second string gk unless you can find one good enough on a freebie.

  67. Rocky Pires

I was reading on phsio room that Serge is back but maybe not.

Lallana is Lampards replacement in my opinion.

Martinez is more upset about playing CB for Pep than CDM i Think .
HE would be a massive addition (in all manners of ways) but hard to see it happening.

On the ST role, first off im not a fan but Hulk is to be on the move, aany takers?

    My Strikers list would read
    1 Reus
    2 Benzema
    3 Alexi Sanchez

Second strikers in addition to a worldie
    1 Remy
    2 Gamerio
    3 Lacazzeta
    4 Michy Batshuayi

  68. Sir Chips

Surely Lukaku is someone we should be seriously looking at.

Mourinho doesn’t want him at Chelsea and he has to be out of Everton’s price bracket. Getting Chelsea to sanction the deal may be difficult given the dislike between Wenger + Mourinho but if we made them a irrefutable offer (£30-£25M) then they would have to take it, especially if they’re going after Diego Costa. Lukaku, Remy + Giroud would be a nice selection of centre forwards.

Reus is so far ahead of Draxler, but Wenger will prefer the younger ‘project’. If Remy really is the best we can do then we may as well pack up and go home right now. Mad Mario would be a better option, even Jackson Martinez.

Yeah Isco is fantastic, hasn’t really played as much as he would have liked this season but with Di Maria’s form he could hardly complain.

Isco to replace Iniesta and Koke to replace Xavi.

Lol, I think Spain just might be OK.

  71. Ashwin Gunner

“With the wage packet he takes home, competing for the title is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM we should expect from him.”

Wenger thinks he is doing some kind of favour to Arsenal by achieving 4th place.

Who the fck wanted 4th place. We wanted a trophy.
I wonder why no players stands up and says to Wenger that his methods are not good to win titles.

I wonder what input’s steve bould gives Wenger. He is asst. manager FFS. he should be telling Wenger to do things differently when current appraoch is not working.

I guess invincibles started leaving as they were aware that you cannot question Wenger, and with his approach to win anything will be tough.

    Sir Chips

I think Mou will have a striker clear out this summer with Torres and Ba being sold.

If Costa got injured he’d need a backup so it would be madness to sell Lukaku.

  73. Romford Pele

    Isco/Gotze/Hazard?

Man, all are great players, personal opinion I guess. Isco was great last year and did well in the CL. Gotze was smashing it up at 18/19 and won two Bundesliga titles – struggling for game time at Bayern atm. Hazard was also ripping it up from early, not sure Mourinho is the best manager for him though. Best to wait a couple years, you can only really make predictions right now.

Precisely! I laugh when people write off Spain and say that their dominance is coming to an end while forgetting that they still have upcomers like Koke, Isco, Martinez and Muniain. It’s just a ridiculous talent pool

  75. Romford Pele

“Reus is so far ahead of Draxler, but Wenger will prefer the younger ‘project”

Draxler isn’t really a project though, the talent is obvious. Reus is obviously more complete but you’d expect that to be the case considering there are 4 years between the two.

Reus would also be much harder to attain which is why Draxler is realistic.

  76. WengerEagle

Reus seems to be top of everyone’s wish list but unfortunately I’m sure all the top European clubs in need of a forward feel exactly the same.

There would be an incredible bidding war for Reus were he to become available, everyone would want him, us, United, City, Liverpool, PSG, Real, Bayern, etc.

  77. Gregg

Mate stats can be used but contradict themselves. Everyone highlights the ‘Away defeats’ against 3 teams. However we pissed the London derby table, is this where Chelsea lost it ? Chelsea pissed the matches against the other 4 contenders, what good did it do them ? Liverpool have conceded 1.5 goals a game on average, conceding 2’s regularly against the bottom sides, this is where they blew it. Everyone will have their own inquest as where it went wrong and the three CL placed teams will identify different areas.

  78. Santos

    Why not go crazy and get the two; Reus and Draxler? We could even add Muller to the list. The front three would be like this;

    Draxler. Muller. Reus

I wonder how Muller would perform if left to spearhead the attack.

    Great point.

Be interesred in people’s opinions on the following scenario. I wiil use two players but it could be the same in other cases.

We ask Martinez if he wants to come to us. He says he’s interested but wants to concentrate on WC first. Do we wait until after the WC or do get Schniederlin before he gets snapped up ?

  81. sanmi

Here is the list of players I don’t want to see in an Arsenal shirt because I thibk they are hyped.
    1. Benzema- the guy is not world class, misses too much sitters.
    2. Cavani- at best on Dzeko level, single handedly made psg lose to chelsea, was crap in confed cup.
    3. Griezmann- saw him a few times esp against man utd, good movt but don’t think he’s built for epl. Too fragile
Frankly imo, Loic Remy is better than the above 3.

  82. Romford Pele

I like Muller but it makes no sense unless we’re going to get rid of Theo which obviously won’t happen

  83. Carts

Interesting point raised about us signing Ox and Getvinho for combine amount of what mata would’ve been.

Goes to show that Wenger fancied average quality/quantity over genuine quality.

  84. Romford Pele

“Benzema and Cavani aren’t world class? Lololololol. I’ve had enough.”

People really do come out with outlandish claims at times.

  85. Rocky Pires

Muller wont leave but he is actually the ilke of a player we need .
I would love to see Theo LW, I think would suit him best turning in on his left remember he done all his damage v Newcastle from left not central.

    Eagle and RP

They can all rotate in my honest opinion. It won’t be dangerous to have them. Like you said 100m would be a lot of money to spend on them. That would be crazy though.

  87. Bankz

    Santos.
I am honestly surprised everyone on Legrove is drawing up a list of players and actually thinking WENGER will have a change of heart and go on a spending spree.
We signed 5 players over the last 2 transfer windows.
    2 were Freebies
    2 were loaders &
Ozil came on the last day(many including myself still think if Aston Villa hadn’t reaped us a new hole on the opening day, this signing MAY not have happened).
I will rather take my mind off the summer transfer window, look forward to the FACUP final(praying we end the trophy drought) & then pray for the world cup to commence.
Wenger will sign who he wants and when he wants at a price he wants.
We all know this. Y’all stop with the false hopes’.

  88. Zoran

“Why not go crazy and get the two; Reus and Draxler? We could even add Muller to the list. The front three would be like this”

Santos, reed my lips: this will never happens.

Unless we get Usmanov instead that yankee cunt. In this case all 3 of them would be squad players.

Or ” what is your favourite plastic water bottle, Arsène ?
    – hum, good question ! I like Évian, they bounce a lot ! “

  90. Romford Pele

“I would love to see Theo LW, I think would suit him best turning in on his left remember he done all his damage v Newcastle from left not central.”

Ummm, Theo played CF last season when we beat Newcastle 7-3. He definitely can’t play LW, if anything, that’s where Ox should be. Theo’s game is too limited for him to play in a position like that. We know what he contributes, let’s not over-complicate his game.

  91. Wallace

“We ask Martinez if he wants to come to us. He says he’s interested but wants to concentrate on WC first. Do we wait until after the WC or do get Schniederlin before he gets snapped up ?”

i’d wait. maybe get Martinez to sign his travel card to say he’ll come though. Schneiderlin would be useful but sure we could get him or someone of that quality at any time.

  92. N5

“1. Benzema- the guy is not world class, misses too much sitters.”

    Looooooool, have you been drinking!!!

  93. Romford Pele

“Remy better than Cavani and Benzema, I mean honestly do you even watch football?”

    Lol, pure tears

  94. Wallace

Martinez & Draxler would be the dream for me this summer. but can only see Wenger blowing £30m+ on one player. i think a 30m player and a 20m player the best we can hope for.

  95. sanmi

You can follow the media or you can see things yourself:
Benzema and Cavani are crap take it from me.
We’ll see how he performs in the world cup, then you will remember these words of mine. I remember France relegating Benzema to the bench and starting Giroud in final phase of qualifiers. Because the Idiot was doing 2 wrong things
    1. Missing sitters
    2. Moving into Ribery’s space.

And cavani is useless without Lavezzi
