Mourinho, tactical masterclass? Do me a favour…

I can’t play the games the media play. I watched the Liverpool game yesterday and I saw no tactical master play. I didn’t see the second coming of the Herbert Chapman. All I saw was a miserable unimaginative game of football decide the title.

I was staggered to read and listen to the outpouring of admiration for Jose Mourinho after the game. Shearer said, in astonishment,

‘Look here, they’ve got 7 players behind the ball. Fantastic discipline.

Excuse me? Am I hearing this right?

Firstly, let’s delve into the Jose game plan. He spent the whole week souring the run in by declaring he was going to play a weakened side. Straight up, this sort of comment shouldn’t be tolerated. It so out of touch with the spirit of the game. It’s standard Jose, but whatever. Then he turns up to the game and looks like he’s been on 3 day coke binge. He rolls his team out to play like they’re a League 2 side playing Liverpool.

What’s up with that?

Now look, I marvel at his practical view of football. He didn’t do what Arsene did and turn up pants down ready for a good Rodgering. However, to show up with the most expensively assembled squad in the league and play like Stoke is shambolic. It’s embarrassing. Sure, we all love winning. Sure I’d like some of his trophies, but for me, deliver it like Pep or Klopp over the monstrosity that is a Mourinho shame train.

‘Tactical master class’

Please spare the bullshit. He lined up with a bank of ten and stifled the game. He sent his players out to time waste… in the first half! Imagine that. £190m wage bill, a £14m a year manager and that’s what he serves up to the world… and our press think that’s masterful? Give me a break.

Now, Brendan Rodgers played a duff hand. All he needed was a point to keep the match in his hand. Simple fact is Liverpool, much like Arsenal of yesteryear don’t possess the players to play like Brand Allardyce. So he couldn’t. But I still feel his open play flunked it. Stevie G slipping. That’ll molest him in his sleep for the rest of eternity.

Anyway, Jose has a brilliant record against the top teams this year. Better than anyone. Where has that got him? He’s unlikely to win a trophy this year. Where was his tactical brilliance against Sunderland, Palace and Villa. All that money, all that talent… and Liverpool are ahead of him. He’s a fading star. 2 years without a trophy. No £200m spend available this summer. Nasty negative vibe that permeates Chelsea and everyone around him. He’s going to find it tough.

Horrible man. Horrible manager. Hopefully, a horrible trophyless season for the chosen one.

In other news, let’s hope Arsene is looking at what all the teams above us have that we don’t. Size, energy and rapid pace. If Arsene is to stay on over the next two years, the one place we can hope he improves on is the squad. It’s the simplest most effective way to change what we do.

You have to put paid to the idea that he’ll change anything else. He’s beyond owning up to the fact he gets it wrong. He’s to experienced and long in the tooth to bring in new staff and new training methods. The best we can hope for is a better squad. We need Wenger to go back to his roots. We need him to sign players that made him great. Big, powerful players who had pace by the bucket load.

Sign a winger like Theo. He’ll not be back until gone September. So we’ll need to replace his pace. Bring in a striker with outrageous pace and strength. Immediately, you have a forward line that is scary. What can’t you do against pace that can get in behind your backline? Press. No one will press up high giving our midfield more space to pick out the passes. Pace in the forward line also means players like Santi and Ozil can play balls into space rather than feet. Immediately those two have a different dimension to their option box.

We’ll also need to focus on building out our squad in other areas. It’s not looking good for Sagna staying on. That’s a shame. He’s a great player and he has a lot of experience. If he does go, let’s get serious about the replacement. Seamus Coleman would sit high on my priority list for sure. 6 goals, 2 assists, buckets loads of pace, a good cross and excellent discipline. At 25  years old, he has his best years ahead of him, he’d also fit with our British core, in the sense that London has a massive Irish community and it’s always a pretty good mix. Maybe it’ll inspire us to look deeper into Ireland for talent. An area we don’t seem to exploit like other clubs.

We’ll also need to bring in some extra energy into the middle of the park. We need a monster midfielder in my opinion, but one who has skill meshed in with the power. Ideally, I’d love Pogba or Vidal. I’d also take someone like Bender from Levurkusen. I think we should also be looking at squad players who can come in and do a job in certain types of games. Crystal Palace don’t have a team of world class players. What they have is a group of players who are absolute monsters. They can take out big team on their day because of their ability to get into players. I’m not saying go and sign Crystal Palace players, I’m saying that when it comes to the squad, we don’t necessarily need world class, we need attributes that stretch teams. United had Darren Fletcher. A long way off world class,  yet he always caused us massive problems when he played against us because he could cover a lot of ground and he was hugely aggressive. Our squad outside the starting 11 doesn’t have enough bite or grit to it. We need to back that in this summer.

… I’d still love it if we moved for Diego Costa. His attitude is so good. He wants to win at all costs on the pitch. It’s inspiring to watch, I can’t imagine what it’s like to play against. Or what it’s like to play for.

Next season, if we make the right changes and bring in a deeper squad of players that are more suited to the battles we’ll face, we’ll might be able to counter the obvious deficiencies the manager has.

Gotta pray that scouting department pulls its finger out…

P.S. I don’t know if you’ve seen the Dani Alves response to having a banana thrown at him, but it’s excellent if you haven’t. He picks it up and he eats it. The aftermath on Twitter was pretty amusing as well, Neymar with his kid eating a banana with the hashtag #Weareallmonkeys. Love that attitude. Take on the muppets by making a joke of their behaviour. Reminds me of the story of Superman taking down the KKK in the 1940s. The real KKK had accrued a lot of power and their memberships were swelling. A guy called Stetson Kennedy had infiltrated the group and tried to expose them to the police. When that failed, he went to guys making the Superman radio show. They pulled together a 16 episode where superman took on men in white hoods… the show exposed all the KKKs secrets and killed the mystique of the group, making a mockery of it in the process.

I think these embarrassing acts need putting in perspective. They’re a joke. Make a joke of it. Make a spectacle of the people. Nationally humiliate them. Outrage just fuels the fire and more copycat behaviour.

Good on Danni Alves. Shame on Spain, yet again letting itself down.

2nd. I’ll take that. And I read the article.

Game yesterday was the crappest game of football I’ve seen since… Well midweek when Chelsea bored Atletico to death.

For their trophies I don’t think I could tolerate having to watch that shit every week.

  2. Romford Pele

Coleman or Aurier. I sway to the latter because of price tag and age, even though Coleman isn’t old himself. Aurier is also more versatile. I think he’d be ready to hit the ground running.

  3. Wallace

it was nice to hear the Scousers pissing and moaning afterwards. you did get the impression the last few weeks that all they had to do was show up and the title was theirs. not looking good for them now with City’s big guns returning.

  4. will

Load of crap chel did what it had to do to win glad to see you hate other teams as much as arsenal you should take up football management you think you know it all

  5. Wallace

if Utd or Chelsea do pay 30m for Shaw you’re probably looking at 20mish for Coleman, which to me is crazy money for a full back.

  6. DUIFG

Don’t quite understand the mourninho hate, he has out his side in with a shout of picking up the title. With 3 games left that’s all that counts. Not pretty but you are going against a team that has won a silly number of games on the trot.

He adapted the game plan, he got result. You can’t argue with that.

  7. akande

Arsene Wenger needs to get his act right for the coming season and not act the paymaster’s script of having to look for cheap option, we are an ambitious side, so he shud proove it to the world

  8. Romford Pele

“He adapted the game plan, he got result. You can’t argue with that.”

Nobody is slating him for getting the result, it’d be lovely to see Arsenal set up like that once in a while. But considering how much money has been spent on that squad, it was a pretty tepid performance and a result they wouldn’t have got if not for Gerrard’s slip.

  9. somecallmemystic

Sorry don’t get the attack on Jose – wanker that he is – he formulated tactics that stifled Liverpool, scoring 2 goals and winning 3 points. Wenger turns up with fuck all tactics, find the team 4 down within 20 odd minutes and not only gets no points, but in fact gets nothing out of the game – hence getting humiliated AGAIN at Chelsea.

I actually wanted Liverpool to win yesterday, to rub salt in to the wound of Wenger – bollocks that only rich teams can win the league, tactical nous can hopefully do so as well.

So 4th place is the best that Arsenal can do this season, I know we have made cup final, and this called progression by some. I just don’t understand the deluded defenders of this man, 1st to 4th in a couple of months, a bloody joke.

Don’t understand why people are resigning themselves to the idea that at least it is only 2 more years stagnation under Wenger, this club is quite able to offer the old fool yet another contract and another and …….

  10. Hitman49

Hey look if the chavz win the title it’ll just say 2014/15 winners….
Not that they parked the bus and got lucky !

Win the game ! Make your own statement ! Shamfield was rocked to the core!
They thought they just had to turn up and it was all theirs.
    Please god no !
I’m with shitty on this !

  11. DUIFG

It’s true you can’t really imagine SAF doing the same but if you look at Chelsea all season he is just playing his percentages. Did same to us at home, keep it toght nick it, then beat people at home.

It’s probably got him into the cl final and a shout of the pl. it’s turgid pragmatism but it has to be done at some points.

  12. Baba

Moaninghno is a cunt anytime anyday,if other teams park the bus he will say they are afraid to play his team and that the best team lost, but when he parks and win the best team won in his opinion.Imagine thos quality turning to Stoke players overnight….pls if its him that we need to win trophy mayb barren spell can stay 4 all i care,i so dislike him.Aurier,Bender,Benzema and Draxler or Griezmann with a few squad players we are back on track even with Wenger tactical ineptness

  13. Cloggs

Maureen plays Liverpool away in after a CL semi final that week and wins 0-2
Le Frog plays Liverpool away and loses 5-1

The difference between The Special One and The Specialist in Failure.

  14. Romford Pele

    “We did once F A cup final 05 !”

I had no problem with that mate. Wenger needs to learn that you can’t always be in control, playing open and expansive football. I thought we had started a new blueprint playing deep and trying to counter. Wenger just doesn’t seem comfortable with it though. He went back to trying to control it in the big games and was ruthlessly exposed. The counter system would work better if we had better personnel in certain positions.

  15. DUIFG

Anybody seen much of the DM’s playin in he Portuguese league? Couple of names flying around but I can’t differentiate between them. All young I believe. Not sure I want a prospect as my DM, wan somebody with a couple years under the belt.

  16. somecallmemystic

By the way, I am one of the sad people that Pedro attacked in a previous post, that wears replica shirts all the time.

Unfortunately my wife hasn’t washed the current shirt, so I will be forced to watch in the previous one. Sorry guys for once the shambles will not be Wenger’s fault, I apologise in advance for my wife and take full responsibility for her failure! 🙂

  17. Romford Pele

    DUIFG,

Not sure which ones you’ve heard of but William Carvalho is the best of the lot. Been linked with us and United. Will win player of the season in Portugal. Massive release clause though.

  18. DUIFG

I my be getting confused with managala, ye he is one I have heard this carvalho. Can’t see us splashing 30 mil in this position. Can see us spending max half of that there.

  19. Maverick

The point with Mourinho is that he criticizes the same brand of football that he played yesterday when it is played against Chelsea. West Ham did it successfully and he branded it 19th Century stuff. Maybe this is also 19th century stuff, but it worked and worked well.
Win or lose (or draw) on the field, Jose always wins the battle in the media.
I don’t get this argument about the squad having cost so many $$ and they need to play attacking football. It is about adapting to the situation and they did very well. I wish Arsenal does the same when the situation demands.

  20. guess

It was awful to watch, (pre 18th century), and I don’t mind the tactics as long as he doesn’t blubber like a baby when it happens to him. He then becomes the special (needs) one and should be removed by men in white coats.

  21. Ash79

Dani got get far more bananas now, laced with all kinds of non-barca DNA stuff.. not sure what to make of it. Need to shame the authorities here, shaming idiotic fans is pointless, they have no reason to change but autorities have an obligation. However we know the paltry fines by the Spanish FA and UEFA and FiFA are spineless cunts. Racism is here to stay, once the new world order has conditioned the generation below us into believing we are all the same to the extent that there is also no male or female and we are all just unisex, colour of skin wont even matter then. Come on Atletico!!

  22. Romford Pele

“The point with Mourinho is that he criticizes the same brand of football that he played yesterday when it is played against Chelsea. West Ham did it successfully and he branded it 19th Century stuff. Maybe this is also 19th century stuff, but it worked and worked well.”

    Exactly.

You can understand why West Ham do it because they don’t have the resources to go at Chelsea full throttle but my beef with Mourinho is that he tries to paint Chelsea as the little underdog when that is far from the case. Great manager, sure. He ain’t special though.

  23. gambon

“but for me, deliver it like Pep or Klopp over the monstrosity that is a Mourinho shame train.”

Klopp has done what Mourinho did yesterday many many many times, including regularly in the CL.

“Please spare the bullshit. He lined up with a bank of ten and stifled the game. He sent his players out to time waste…”

    Dont agree at all.

He played very compact, allowing Liverpool room wide, he blocked the route through the middle and didnt give Suarez or Sturridge the room they like.

Now, while you may say “anyone can do that” can you explain how City, Arsenal, Everton and pretty much no-one else managed to?

Any how I would call it strategic rather than tactical genius.

To be able to go to these tough places and repeatedly get results is outstanding. Yes its Pragmatic but whats wrong with that?

I would be very excited if I was a Chelsea fan, as they are 2 attacking players away from being able to dominate.

  24. Cloggs

Mourinho; “no stop it, nah nah rubbish.. no chance we are title contenders” whahahaha!

Classic little portugese cunt… I luv it!.

  25. bergkamplegend

    “We did once F A cup final 05 !” == >> sweet memories…
ronaldo and co crying like babies alll over the pitch at the end of the game…

Something we will never see again.

  26. Zoran

“However, to show up with the most expensively assembled squad in the league and play like Stoke is shambolic. It’s embarrassing”

I hate the man, but Pedro, let’s be realistic:
What he assembled yesterday was his second team, with the defence playing for the first time ever. Kalas & Ivanovic???? First time I heard of Kalas. And what hi does: put the PFA Player of the year in the small pocket.

You love him or you hate him, one thing you have to acknowledge him: he is indeed a tactical genius, not like our one which whole footballing philosophy is to attack, play nice football and get humiliated by such defensive masters.

  27. Norfolk

    Pedro

    Well said

I sat down to watch that game but didn’t really get a lot of enjoyment out of it but had to turn it over when Chelsea scored.
As you will recall the Chelsea defender slipped and Ba jumped on it clear on goal. All very nice and fortuitous, one of the numpty commentators said “That just shows the genius of Maureen” I nearly threw up.

  28. Wenger's Unused Wallet

I disagree with your post for the first time, today.

I think it was a great piece of tactical expertise, with out his 1st team GK, two CB’s, CM CAM LW he went too one of the best attacks in Europe and came away with a two nil victory.

When was the last time wenger did that ?

  29. somecallmemystic

The point about the squad being so expensive, is only really relevant had they fucked things up, as it is they were good enough to be able to play to the specific tactics set out by their manager – boring as they were to the neutral.

  30. Romford Pele

“1st team GK, two CB’s, CM CAM LW”

You’re talking like the replacements were plucked from obscurity. He had a £50m striker to bring off the bench and brought on Willian. It’s not like he was clutching at straws.

  31. Arsene's Nurse

This is the worst blog post I’ve seen on Le-grove for some time. What a load of crap regarding Mourinho. He knows exactly what he is doing and what’s more he gets results. Chelsea are in with a shout at the title and are still in the CL.

No Wenger side has ever beaten a Mourinho side.

So what if some of the football isn’t entertaining, they more than made up for yesterdays performance by spanking us 6-0.

I’d take a 2-0 win over Liverpool at anfield by playing negative football and a 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea any day of the week.

  32. gambon

“Coleman or Aurier. I sway to the latter because of price tag and age, even though Coleman isn’t old himself. Aurier is also more versatile. I think he’d be ready to hit the ground running.”

    I would rather avoid Ivorians

Too much rish, could be Sagna like, could be Eboue like. The French league just isnt a good enough league to judge.

I would rather Coleman, or even Chambers.

Oliver Sorg would be my first choice. Would only be about £5m as well.

  33. N21 Tone

Hate Maureen, Hate Chelski but unfortunately have to admire the performance and the tactical nous of Mourinho. He didn’t turn up like us and expect Liverpool to roll over because we are better than them. He paid them the ultimate compliment and went in with Porto style tactics. It worked. They won. And his record against his rivals is there for all to see. We could learn a thing or to from this horrible cunt!

  34. Obsessed with 3

Jose rested players, didn’t have 7 of 11 starters out, and defeated Liverpool at Anfield. I don’t see how you can slate that.

Wenger is too scared to have any kind of game plan.

  35. Rosicky@Arsenal

    Pedro

Nice post after a verylong time. Good to rread you condemn Mourinhio for playing negative footbal.

  36. Cloggs

    After humiliating us at Stamford Bridge;
“Jose, you often leave before the end of the game why do you do that?”
“…My wife doesn’t know the result, she is waiting for me to call..”

    Classic stuff..

  37. N21 Tone

    Obsessed with 3

Wenger is too scared to have any kind of game plan.

No, he is just so arrogant that he thinks teams are going to roll over when we turn up!

  38. gambon

” But considering how much money has been spent on that squad, it was a pretty tepid performance and a result they wouldn’t have got if not for Gerrard’s slip.”

This kind of ignores the fact that Jose always assumes there will be a mistake, and rightly so.

You have 90 minutes to win the game, you dont need to score in the first 10 minutes, at some point the chance will come.

  39. Dream10

I think Chelsea will sell Hazard, Luiz and maybe Ramires this summer. Luiz is a hybrid CB/DM for them. Matic has covered the DM spot. Kalas and Zouma can be the backup CBs. They have Ivanovic as well. WIllian has taken over as the main runner in Mourinho’s team. They can then afford to sign Costa/Cavani/Falcao and a right-sided player who is productive.
MF of Willian-Matic-Oscar and FW of LucasMoura/Schurrle-CF-Salah

  40. Romford Pele

    Gambon,

Fair enough the French league isn’t great (think it’s improving though) but Aurier is one of the highest rated FBs in Europe this season. Six goals and eight assists is definitely something to write home about. Plays CB and LB too so versatility is more than welcome. Coleman would be great sure but Chambers is still pretty inexperienced himself. Only real downside about Aurier is him swanning off to the ACON every other year but the back-up should be able to fill in fine. I’m a big fan, reckon he’d adapt very well. Btw, we got Eboue for Beveren in Belgium – now that is a tragic league!

  41. Romford Pele

“No, he is just so arrogant that he thinks teams are going to roll over when we turn up!”

    Exactly.

  42. Romford Pele

“I would like to see Jonathan Biabiany in an Arsenal shirt next season. That’s just me.”

I’ve seen him at the Emirates before mate and he’s honestly nothing to write home about. Sure it was one game but he looked like a headless chicken more than anything.

  43. Romford Pele

“This kind of ignores the fact that Jose always assumes there will be a mistake, and rightly so.”

I think it’s wrong to assume but fair enough. I do, however, agree that you’ll always have a key opportunity in the game. They concentrated on not losing it within the first twenty. Liverpool were pretty devoid of ideas after a while tbh.

  44. gambon

    Romford

I think its worth taking a bigger risk on Chambers cos hes English, England U19 captain, and has played 23 PL games.

I would rather an established 22-24 year old, but id much rather take the risk on Chambers than Aurier.

  45. Cloggs

Jose, Arsenal called you ‘boring’ would you agree it with that”
“…..Ofcourse, I played against them ten times and I never lost..”

  46. Paulinho

It’s not so much about tactics, but about mentality. Mourinho can imbue his teams with the confidence to execute the chosen strategy, Wenger cannot. Wenger would not be capable of setting his team up like that without them playing like a bunch of idiots and taking defensive tactics too far i.e Our striker never being alive to a Gerrard slip up because he’s too much of Wenger Zombie to take advantage of it.

Mourinho teams are cynical negative but switched on, and that’s makes them interesting to watch. They play with conviction, whereas as Arsenal go out to play attractive football, but have no belief, and as a result are even more boring to watch than Chelsea and look far less threatening going forward.

  47. Cesc Appeal

Can’t agree on Mourinho. He turned up, wanted three points against arguably the most lethal attacking line in the Premiership and made them look average.

    Won 2-0.

I don’t understand people’s gripe, you know what Mourinho is going to do away from home in a game like that, it’s for the home team to find a way to break his line down. Frequently they don’t.

We, the same fans who wanted Wenger hung for the suicidal line ups he took to places like Chelsea are now having a pop at a guy who looked at the two teams and said ‘if I go toe to toe I’ll die here. I have to box smart.’

He did. He won. And kept a clean sheet.

  48. somecallmemystic

I can’t see Chelsea selling Hazard, though have to admit last summer couldn’t see them offloading Mata.

Mourinho is a law to himself, which is one of the reasons why the prat is a winner.

  49. SurferX

    Morning munglers!

    @Pedro
Very harsh on Maureen mate- setting out to defensively stifle an attacking team and actually executing the plan are two different things. The fact that his teams are able to consistently do it against the top teams- even when he hasn’t a full squad (what a debut from Kalas!)- is testament to his planning and coaching. I’m a little surprised that you don’t give enough credit to that; especially given our deficiencies in that area.

Where I do agree with you is he is a classless yob that stinks up the place wherever he goes. The football is dour (on the whole), and I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the Arsenal, winning at any cost isn’t something I go along with. That being said, there is a lot of distance between winning at all costs and making the same fundamental mistakes time after time again.

Qudos to Danni Alves too- but Spain should absolutely be doing more to stamp this out. The behaviour of some of their fans is beyond backward and inbred.

  50. DUIFG

This Mourinho hate also misses the point that he has a squad to play this way if needed.

You could never see us being able to play cagey with the personel we have, We would get ripped down the flanks and Monreal would get exposed. Its not in our teams ethos, its no bad thing when your team is good enough not to rely on having to win ugly but agasint the best we simply are not.

  51. bergkamplegend

Like some others Grovers today I admit that maureen yesterday’s tactical display was great.
Not beautiful to watch for sure, but efficient, with many players who had never plays together.

I hate the chavs, I hate that kind of football, but you have to admit that maureen knows how to take the best of the players he has at his disposition…Wenger is not anymore able to do the same since so many years, so of course we are a little bit jealous lol

  52. DUIFG

= Barcelona inquiring about Javi Martinez. An ambitious team will get him

and will probbaly play hoim at CB where he will get exposed, when will these teams ever learn.

  53. gambon

If Javi Martinez is available we should be all over that.

He would be perfect alongside Ramsey in the middle, and a HUGE HUGE HUGE upgrade on Arteta.

  54. Al

I despise the guy but yesterday was am excellent disciplined performance with players who are not regulars.

The fact he has his wingers working that hard and being as switched on is impressive. .

Look at all the praise Bayern received last season for how hard working and switched on robben and Robert were defensively.

It’s the end of the season. …All that matters is the result. …If Rodgers is not willing to change his approach due to principle and thinks it’s more important then delivering the club’s first league trophy in 25 years he is either crazy or deluded.

All about the result come the end of season.

  55. Romford Pele

“I think its worth taking a bigger risk on Chambers cos hes English, England U19 captain, and has played 23 PL games”

Fair, although I don’t see us signing a RB at all tbh.

  56. Zoran

The only problem Maureen has is that he has no tactics against another team that park the bus in front of him, see Vila, West Ham or Sunderland.
By the others, see Shity, Pool or us, clean sheet in all of them, it is just like a home work for him.

  57. SurferX

    In terms of shopping list priority, it has to be;

SC x2 (or 1 and 1 AML- a proper winger please, no converted AMC’s)
    Holding MC
    DR

As I’ve commented before, with a little bit of judicious planning, DR is something we should of sorted last season. Like most of the holes in the squad we have- they could of been avoided.

And yes, pace is absolutely essential to our tactical setup. When we have none, its too easy to stifle us.

  58. Danny

One of the crap things about coming 4th is that no one who’s any good will join until we’re pass the Champions League play-off round therefore no pre-season etc

Did you see that Chelsea defender Kalas – first full league match and who do we have – Jenkinson?!

  59. Zoran

“Fair, although I don’t see us signing a RB at all tbh.”

If Bac leaves, we will have to. Hope the senile one sees that as well.

  60. gambon

“One of the crap things about coming 4th is that no one who’s any good will join until we’re pass the Champions League play-off round therefore no pre-season etc”

    Dont believe that at all.

  61. Thank you and goodnight

    @Pedro
I’m not a lover of Mourinho, although I’ve mellowed towards him over the years as 1st time around I despised him. Agreed some of his antics are an absolute disgrace…….but can’t agree on comments regarding yesterday’s game. He came he saw he conquered and that’s all that matters. Chavs needed a win to keep their very slim title hopes alive and they got it.
We needed a win at Anfield to keep our run going and what happened….We got shafted royally something we’ve barely recovered from. Yes we all love games where we look good and score 4 or 5, but sometimes you need to do the boring stuff. Sorry

    The problem could be Wenger.

We have a big squad, and the only real “priority” is RB, because our main man is leaving.

We are well covered numbers-wise everywhere else.

So it becomes a question of if Wenger has the appetite to make tough decisions and upgrade on what we have.

Now we know Arsene doesnt like making tough decisions.

Could you imagine how upset he would get at the thought of telling Sanogo his Arsenal career is over?

  64. Cesc Appeal

The Wenger excuses are lined up, and it looks the fans are ready to swallow them:

    > You can’t buy until you’ve actually qualified for UCL
    > Hard to buy in a World Cup year.
    > Diaby, Wilshere and Walcott mean we don’t need to buy.
    > Hard to find a player available to improve us
    > Transfer market is not a supermarket.

Liverpool signed Suarez in 2011 for 22m pounds and we were interested in him for four or five transfer windows. Pathetic.

  66. Dobermann 13

Football is 100 % about the result! and losing playing the Wenger way sucks, humiliated in every big game.
A manager with tactics and passion would do for me every time.
Anyone who would not swap Wenger for Mourinho is kidding theirselves , same as if you believe it’s just another 2 years of our idiot, Kroenke is squeezing us for the long term, and Wenger will be with him all the way.
That said its match day so it’s COYG, get the polish ready, the 4th place trophy is coming home, wow talk about lowering your sights and living of scraps.

  67. Zoran

Does anybody think the Chavs cares if Di Matteo parked the bus at Bayern or Maureen against Barca?

Of course they don’t: It will stay forever written Di Mateo won the Champions League with Chelski and Maureen with Inter.

  68. Cesc Appeal

    Dream10

Also he’s now an experienced big game player!

Numerous times he’s Munich’s unsung hero in that middle, obviously their more striking talent in that area gets the credit, but he’s a big lad, breaks up the game well, bosses the middle of the park and distributes the ball well.

Would be perfect for us, exactly what we’re looking for next to Ramsey. I’m not 100% sold on Lars Bender as he seems more like a Ramsey type? Could be wrong, but I hear this season he’s been more attacking than he ever has, and we don’t want that. We want a CDM who understands his role in the side.

  69. Romford Pele

“If Bac leaves, we will have to.”

We won’t. Wenger will just see it as an opportunity to further integrate Bellerin into the squad. Already looks better than Jenkinson for me but who knows really.

  70. Cesc Appeal

Do you think Wenger would be mental enough to waltz into a seaosn with £154 Million sat in the bank with Giroud, Bendtner and Sanogo as striking options?

    No CDM?

    Only 3 CB’s?

    No back up for RB?

Go the whole summer signing no one?

Because he did all those things.

  71. Harry

I love Mourinho, he reminds me in a lot of ways of George Graham. When Arsenal had to go to Anfield to win by 2 he sent out a team with THREE centre backs. Completely counter-intuitive but it worked – absolutely brilliant.

I’ve had enough of all this fashionable tappy tappy shit played by midgets. Guardiola’s style bores me to tears, give me tough uncompromising winners who can play at Old Trafford, Anfield or Bolton alike anyday, wish that was still Arsenal.

  72. GHall

Good post, i just dont thinkyuo can have a go at Chelsea for going with a game plan, when all we talk about on here is wishing Wenger would have a plan.

THey new they couldnt win playing football at anfield so they did what they needed to do.

  73. Craigy

Nice post pedders…… I agree with the Maureen stuf, but like him or loath him he’s a great manager, I was just happy he turned up and got the win against those scoucers, that just brings a big smile to my face, don’t kno why, maybe I’m a secret Liverpool hater deep down haaaa! Dani alves is a beast, eating that bananna is pure class, that was the best move he could’ve made, good on him! I can imagine so many other players getting emotional and giving em what the wanted but not alves, can’t folt him! Even tho I don’t like him or his twat of a club haaa 🙂

  74. Zoran

    Romford
Fully agree with you on Bellerin, I also thing he should have the edge over Jenks, who will probably go on loan.
But, once again, he will have to buy a RB if Bac leaves.
I don’t believe he is so mental not to see that.

  75. Romford Pele

“I don’t believe he is so mental not to see that.”

He started Sanogo against Bayern, anything is possible for him. I don’t think it’s farfetched that he’d go into the new season with Jenkinson/Bellerin tbh.

Jenkinson has been biding his time since 2011. Wenger isn’t just suddenly gonna call quits on his career without giving him an extended run in the team. Plus he’s English and was part of the batch that signed new long-term deals so you know he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  76. gambon

Jenkinson has played 55 top level games for us, I dont see Bellerin getting the nod over him for a while yet.

It will be a new RB with Jenks as back up next season.

  77. somecallmemystic

Debating with ex work colleagues about Arsenal’s stagnation – this is why AKBs are happy with the situation:

“You would swap the past 10 seasons for a league title and 50% less Champions League appearances for example?”

It is amazing how they view the past 10 seasons – in fairness to Wenger I’d say 6 seasons as until that point (i.e up to 4) it isn’t really much more than disappointment.

  78. Thank you and goodnight

    @Harry
Agree with you. Tippi tappi is ok if there is an end product, but more often than not its just kicking the ball backwards and sideways and trying to walk it in the net. Look at bayern under pep, granted they might still win CL, having already won their respective league, but in my opinion they are not as effective as last year.

I think you are a Chelsea/Mourinho fan and what tactical genius ends the season in THIRD place after taking 16 points out of a possible 18 points from top 4 rivals Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Answer: A specialist in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory..well played Jose.

  80. Romford Pele

I look at Jenkinson and feel like he has some of the attributes needed; massive engine, good crosser of the ball. But his ability on the ball is so bad it’s unreal. Maybe playing with Ozil will improve it but I just don’t see it. But like I said, I expect him to start from next season.

It’s certainly not pretty and quite painful on the eyes but it got the job done. The bottom line is the result and he got the result.

I would rather win ugly 2-0 than lose pretty 1-5.

Liverpool still have it in their power though. Win their last two and they finish no worse than 2nd. Even if they draw one they finish no worse than 2nd. Chelsea need both City and them to lose once each.

Lol who am i kidding? Chelsea will win the league and the UCL. Fcuk me.

  84. WengerEagle

    Pedro

Sorry but don’t agree at all RE Mourinho.

People who just lazily say he parked the bus fail to grasp that before Saturday’s match Liverpool had scored 51 goals at Anfield in 17 matches averaging 3 goals a match. To go there and keep a clean sheet at this stage of the season as they are on an 11 match winning streak scoring goals for fun has to be applauded especially less than a week after going to the Vicente Calderon and keeping a clean sheet.

16 points out of 18 against the top 4 is unbelievable especially without a WC striker. And before people say he has £50 million Torres and Demba Ba, he inherited these strikers. Eto’o the one striker he has brought in has done well.

Agree that his football is pretty poor to watch but football is a results based industry and there is no one better in that respect.

  87. Guns up

I also dont agree with alot of the mouriniho hate.

Granted the guy is a total nob, however, u go out to play against a liverpool team in that form, and ur more than likely to get beat. U go out and play the way he did, and ur more than likely to get some sort of result.

The money shouldnt have anything to do with the tactics he played yesterday.

Also the loss may also impact liverpool indirectly in there remaining games.

  88. MarbleHall

No point in beating the top teams if you are found wanting against the lesser teams.
Mourinho needs to brush up on his tactics against the bottom-rung teams.

  89. Al

I actually don’t think Jenkinson is that bad BUT to have him as a starter is ridiculous considering the size of the club and the money available.

nathaniel clyne is a really good right back i like who was surprisingly under used this year after the monster year he had last year.

  90. Rosicky@Arsenal

Frankly speaking Inter winning the CL was the most boring CL final i ever saw

    Totally disgustong football show.

And there is no denying the fact wiinning convincingly playing attarctive football is remembered better than playing ugly .

  91. Guns up

Maybe rodgers could have watched how they’ve lined up in other big matches, saw that he’s done this before and adapted his tactics to counter theres? Maybe 3 attackin players plonked on there back line? Maybe try a few more long rangers, defections earning corners and working on set plays? Maybe? Maybe playing down the wings and whipping in crosses all games???

  92. Romford Pele

“Maybe playing down the wings and whipping in crosses all games???”

That’s what they were reduced to and it’s an incredibly inefficient way of playing.

  93. gambon

“Maybe try a few more long rangers, defections earning corners and working on set plays?”

Gerrard has 7 long range attempts on his own, Coutinho certainly had a few.

  94. DUIFG

Wenger played sanogo v bayern as he had no other tactical plan up his sleeve, he knew he was outguned massively. He thought il chuck in a 10% success rate curveball and put the postman up front. thinking the insanity of it might fool dante et al, was a consequence of a lack of options and overall plan rather than any real faith in sanogo.

  95. Zoran

    Romford

To be honest; Sanogo didn’t disappoint against Bayern, Giroud anyway wouldn’t have done better.
Loosing the first leg in London, he had nothing to loose with Sanogo starting.

I don’t think Martinez would be hugely, hugely expensive. I don’t think they’d get anywhere near what they paid for him.

They had to pay a premium for him being basque didn’t they?

  97. Romford Pele

“To be honest; Sanogo didn’t disappoint against Bayern, Giroud anyway wouldn’t have done better.”

That wasn’t really my point. Wenger will take unnecessary risks in certain projects like Sanogo and Jenkinson when the money is evidently there to do better.

  98. Cesc Appeal

If Arsenal won a UCL and we’d put on the most boring, defensive display the world had ever seen and snuck it 1-0…I’d be ecstatic.

A manager’s job isn’t to entertain the neutrals, it’s to win games and entertain HIS fans – do you think the Chelsea supporters are complaining this morning?

You’d rather he went at Liverpool with a weakened team and left huge gaps for Suarez, Sterling, Coutinho and Sturridge and it ended up 4-2 Liverpool or something?

So he fails, but because we’re all entertained that’s better?

Such an Arsenal mentality. Glorious failure. Just give me Glory, don’t care how, you keep the failure.

  99. Romford Pele

“I don’t think Martinez would be hugely, hugely expensive. I don’t think they’d get anywhere near what they paid for him.”

But they don’t need to sell him and he’s still an important squad member? Why would they need to take a loss? There wouldn’t be any shortage of suitors either.

“Such an Arsenal mentality. Glorious failure. Just give me Glory, don’t care how, you keep the failure.”

that’s so good said mate, love it!

  101. Romford Pele

“You’d rather he went at Liverpool with a weakened team and left huge gaps for Suarez, Sterling, Coutinho and Sturridge and it ended up 4-2 Liverpool or something?”

You can still defend stoutly without having to leave gaps though? I thought their performance away to City was a lot better than the yesterday. They didn’t threaten at all until that Gerrard slip. To me, it looked like they were playing for the 0-0 like they did away to Atletico. No problem as I said, results are the most important. But when you’ve spent the amount they’ve spent, it’s the minimum i’d expect.

  102. WengerEagle

‘A manager’s job isn’t to entertain the neutrals, it’s to win games and entertain HIS fans – do you think the Chelsea supporters are complaining this morning?’

Exactly, very few were complaining when we were grinding out wins before February and were playing terrible football.

  105. Moray

I have to agree with the majority here, I’m afraid Pedro. It’s a bit churlish to criticize Mourinho for playing defensively with a second team at Anfield, especially since they were facing such a potent strike force. Mourinho is a cunt, yes, but that shouldn’t overshadow completely his ability as a manager.

And people seem to forget the fact that man city and chelski had new managers this year. It is tough to come in and win the league in your first year. The fact that Liverpool are there is partly testament to the advantage of a running start. The fact Wenger isn’t says a lot about his lack if ability as a manager. Doubly so given the easy telemetry of our fixtures this season.

  106. WengerEagle

‘But they don’t need to sell him and he’s still an important squad member? Why would they need to take a loss? There wouldn’t be any shortage of suitors either.’

Agree this is why I reckon he probably won’t be sold and if he was he’d be bloody expensive.

  107. ughelligunner

Chelsea vs Westham. 0:0, Morhino says westham played 19 century football.
Morhino plays same football and with world class players manages to sneek a win. Tactics?
Dimateo used this same tactics to win the champions league.
Wenger used this tactics against Totenham home and away, bayern, dortmund, Liverpool (f.a) cup. And arsenal was castigated for playing nothing by fans.
P.s. Wigan used this same tactics at the F.A cup semi and it was difficult to break them down and yet?
P.P.S. I was a supporter of this morhino tactics yesterday for the first time just to spite the few pool fans around me, i even sang Jose’s song but it ended there.

  108. Arsenal 1886-2006

Chelsea go to Anfield with plan ‘B’ and win 2-0
Arsenal go to Anfield with no plan ‘B’ and lose 5-1

Have to disagree with you Pedro, love him or hate him he went with a plan and his players carried it out perfectly, that is what well coached well disciplined players do.
I don’t believe he is the messiah as some do, Rodgers cocked up big time and should have sat back and let chelsea have the ball as often as possible then hit them on the counter, Liverpool only needed a draw and Rodgers pulled a Wenger out of the hat.

  109. Sir Chips

Chelsea stopped the juggernaut that was Liverpool dead in their tracks. It was an obvious game plan but if it’s that easy then how have Liverpool blown so many teams away this season? Playing like that for 90 mins takes a lot of discipline and they should be congratulated (if not admired). I am no fan of Mourinho but they controlled that game.

Liverpool should perhaps have not attempted to break down the brick wall and simply played for the 0-0. That way the title would still be in their hands!

Tonight should be a comprehensive victory. If there is a team in the land who you would wish to play at the moment then it’s Newcastle. Let’s put a few past them and increase the pressure on Pardew, who is surely on his way out.

  110. WengerEagle

At the end of the day Mourinho’s won the Champions League twice and could win it for a third time this year while we as a club have never won it.

    Football only remembers the Champions.

  111. Romford Pele

“There must be a way to penetrate that sort of play though, thats all im saying. It’s not 100% unbeatable…is it?”

Of course there is. Which is why I think when everyone is at their best, City are still the best side in the league. They have the most variety to their game and have different elements. They can hurt you from everywhere.

  112. Pedro

Guys, I get it, Mourinho won the game… my point is he plays embarrassing tactics for a team of that talent.

… and whatever you say about him yesterday, simple fact is he’s probably not winning anything this year.

Liverpool capped off his glorious failure. He celebrated that like he’d won the world cup.

He played Stoke tactics yesterday. Really poor regardless off the results.

… and I’d hate it if we played that way. Time wasting in the first half? Classless.

  113. mrz

Demba ba scored 8 goals for Chelsea this season..How many matches did he play? not more than 15, I guess…He is certainly leaving Chelsea this season….should be available for 8-10m. why don’t we bid for him?

Last summer we tried to bring him on loan from Chelsea..But Mourinho at the eleventh hour did not sanction the loan to Arsenal thinking we had title shot….

In the January transfer window of last season, the newspapers linked us with a transfer of Demba Ba…When asked to Wenger, he said” Demba Ba is a good striker. But we have Giroud who is very similar to Ba. We want to give Giroud an opportunity. Therefore, not interested ” Ba joined Chelsea for 8-10m only!!!

But Wenger did try to bring him at Arsenal after 6 months despite Giroud is fit and regular in Arsenal shirt…and he missed..

With only 8m we could have strengthen the forward line immensely…..and we should not have relied on Sanogo in important BPL/CL matches …

Wenger, if only u could have the ability to judge your decisions!!

  114. Romford Pele

“my point is he plays embarrassing tactics for a team of that talent.”

This was my main point. It’s not like he’s inherited a team of cloggers. They are all experienced top class internationals. He could still expand his style of play even further and make them a greater threat, while retaining that defensive solidity. He’s successful and nobody can argue with his results, it speaks for himself. I’m just thankful that not everyone plays that way though because football would definitely be very dull.
