Diaby going all out for… THE WORLD CUP?!

Oh I see… the whole God thing is, you know, like a club? You can’t just ask for things and expect miracles to happen. Well, that’s annoying…

Or is it?

Did I in fact double bluff the good Lord?

I did.

I didn’t care too much for Chelsea either way last might. Simple fact here is that they played a game and have less rest than us. All the big shots were out and they had a reasonable game against a club you have to suspect will be at the centre of a massive wages black hole in a couple of years.

Chelsea won with consummate ease, which gives them more games to consider. Hooray! Hopefully United win this evening as well. I want more games for them. More joy for me when they get tanked in the next round to someone major.

So all in all, a good night for us.

Also, anyone who says God isn’t great doesn’t know what they’re talking about. He didn’t grant me my miracle, but he did return my wallet. What a guy.

In other news, Abou Diaby, that player who last played for us when SEGA was a sponsor, has dropped a little pearler… he wants to play in the World Cup! He’s up a damn mountain trying to get fit for it. Incredible stuff. He’s not training with Arsenal, busting a gut to get fit for us… instead, he’s focusing on the World Cup.

Obviously at our expense.

Now, I know some people think this is sweet. Well, I don’t. Here’s why.

1. He’s barely played 10 games for his pay master over 2 years at a cost of £7m.
2. Brazil is going to be an enormous strain on a body not conditioned to play there after a huge amount of time.
3. How can he possibly deserve a call up into the France squad? He’ll have played zero games for 2 years!
4. Why is his focus not on having a whole summer up a mountain so he’s not a creaking mess by the time preseason rolls around?

It’s unbelievable chat if you ask me. No focus on where the bread is buttered which is a joke if you ask me. But, that’s Abou. Get injured. Do one for 6 months, saunter back into the fold if you fancy it. I find it very coincidental that recovery ties up perfectly with a World Cup finals.

Right, that’s me done for the day. See you tomorrow.

Diaby will go to World Cup, play awesome, Wenger will say he’s put his injury days behind him, not sign a DM but as soon as the transfer window shuts, he’ll get injured for the rest of the season… you know it’s going to happen 😉

  2. Wallace

i know he’s made a lot of money for mostly being injured, but i like Diaby, and feel bad for how his career’s panned out. he seems like a genuine, and popular guy. we could certainly use him right now.

  3. Jamie England

Bit harsh, I think he also said he wanted to play for us before the end of the season. The lads had a nightmare, if he makes 5 appearances for us and gets a call up for the World Cup, good luck to him.

  4. Lee

What a stupid, thoughtless post about Diaby…..First of all the wages we pay him and his injuries are not his fault, Arsenal agreed to that so why make out he should feel guilty for playing 10 times in 2 years….Did he ask Dan Smith to smash his ankle etc etc…..Also do you really expect France coach to pick him unless he has games under his belt for us….in that case if he is in our side hes obviously helping his club and 5/6 games at a world up when he has been off for a year will do him good…..and make him sharper for next season

Really dont understand AFC fans getting on his back, his chronic bad luck and injuries have takenpossibley one of the best midfielders to play at the club…he’s a game changer who can carve up teams….I agree if he stays he should be on a pay per play basis but IF we can get a decent run out of him towards the end of the season he could make the difference from top 4 to winning the title or FA cup

  5. Romford Pele

TYAG – RE Akpom; I think he looks a better prospect but obviously I can’t really say. He looks very refined to me and when he played with the first team in pre-season, he scored like 4 goals and didn’t look out of place. I think he has something about him, he always plays in the age groups above. I think what he needs is a loan at a decent club so we can get a proper assessment of where he’s at.

  6. Babloooo

Do you blame Diaby? It is Wenger that should take the blame for pissing our money at players like him for all these years of injuries! He did the same with RVP and he eloped the moment he had one good-injury-free season!

  7. Guns of brixton

    *sigh*
Sometimes, i honestly think that if Rosicky and Diaby didnt become sooo injury plagued, and were regular consistent starters, shit maybe a tad little better than they are now. . .

  8. Romford Pele

“one of the best midfielders to play at the club…he’s a game changer who can carve up teams”

    This is all mythical.

  9. g0tch34ted

    Nice one Bendy.

It’s going to be difficult to get £52k, let alone double that! Although to be fair to him no one has him quoted as saying that …

Diaby. Jeez, what’s he smoking up that mountain?

  10. Guns of brixton

    Epic weekend of football btw.

    Title defining El classico,

Title shaping match at stamford bridge, AWs 1000th game in charge.

last chance saloon for Moyes, in the manc derby.

BM can wrap up the bundesliga, beating their own record last year.

plenty to watch and see, i think you’ll agree.

  11. bozint

I think I’ve read somewhere that there was some mutual agreement between AFC and Diaby that he will not be getting his wages during this injury period. Not sure though.

It’s a real pity what this guy has gone through, he does have the potential, but bad luck has stalled his career immensely.

Nick B asking for 104k p/w, this guy really is something.

  12. somecallmemystic

Gotta say I generally agree with Pedro regarding Diaby. His first and only thought should be about how he can get fit for Arsenal net season.

Fuck the WC, I’ll support England or whoever has an Arsenal player in their team, but if one picks up a long term injury it will confirm my thoughts that Internationals are simply a pain the arse.

In footballing terms , club over country every time.

  13. Bergkamplegend

Guns : for Bayern’s title there wasn’t any suspense.
    Totally overestimated german championship.

And bayern continues to plunder the other german clubs, such a beautiful policy.

  14. Dissenter

Diaby will rise from the ashes. He’ll regain match fitness and play 10 minutes in 2 games that don’t count.
    He’ll run around at pre-season.
Wenger will refuse to buy the athletic defensive midfielder that we all know we need because of Diaby is a “new signing”.
Diaby will have muscular injuries in August, out for 4 weeks.
In September, major screws will come loose, out for 4 months.
    We’ve seen this movie before.
How many times has Diaby stopped us from recruiting properly?

  15. Bergkamplegend

“Hopefully United win this evening as well. I want more games for them”

Pedro I’m pretty sure they will qualified tonight…
For being atrociously trashed in the next round LOL

  16. Leedsgunner

Personally I don’t blame Diaby for his injuries. I blame Wenger for NOT selling him when he had the chance in 2010 and then offering him a contract extension. Plus in previous years, Diaby’s fitness was used as a reason NOT to buy a decent DM.

Lately, even to Wenger Diaby has become an irrelevance. He doesn’t even give updates on Diaby’s fitness anymore at press conferences.

I think he has a contract that expires in 2015, we need to terminate it and send him in his way, along with Park, Djourou, Coquelin and Miyachi. That’s 200k a week in wages saved that we could put down for Pogba, or Diego Costa…

  17. Wallace

lots of replacements for Sagna being mentioned. but if Bellerin kicks on i’d be happy with him and Jenkinson battling it out.

  18. gazzap

Just read all about FFP. Liverpool look to be OK looking at projections. Probably cant spend fortunes on players or wages but should be OK. City may not be OK. Their accounts are murky and no one knows what UEFA will write off or let them include. Punishment could either be exclusion from CL or not letting all their players be included in the CL squad. So which player will join city and then not play in the CL? Surely City need to seriously start curbing their spending.

  19. Romford Pele

    “Coquelin”

Hope we have some sort of buyback clause for him, I do think there’s a player there. But yeah, right now is the time to let him go.

  20. Hitman49

For god sake don’t let WENGER see bendy’s on a free !

He’ll think 104k a week is a steal ! I can hear that flat tone French wine’y voice “he has premier and champions league experience ,he’s young and can score goals ”

    God help us !!!

  21. DUIFG

Would love to see what the average cost in wages for each diaby game played, it must be near a million pounds

  22. Romford Pele

“lots of replacements for Sagna being mentioned. but if Bellerin kicks on i’d be happy with him and Jenkinson battling it out.”

It’s a big risk but one I can see Wenger going for. That said, if we buy Ginter; either him or Flamini can also cover that position.

I quite liked Coquelin at FB to be honest.

  23. somecallmemystic

Diaby running up a mountain is a great idea – if he stays fit Arsenal should win every match next year, assuming it is played on a 75 degree angled pitch. 🙂

  24. DUIFG

lots of replacements for Sagna being mentioned. but if Bellerin kicks on i’d be happy with him and Jenkinson battling it out.

simply no, those 2 can battle it out at CB cover, need a decent rb in. Im looking towards italy.

  25. Bergkamplegend

You can say what you want about Diaby, but the man as a mental made of steel, you can’t deny that!! lol

  26. somecallmemystic

Just realised the real reason why Wenger got Joel Campbell. Sagna leaving was preplanned, Joel can help tap up a fellow dirt cheap Costa Rica Right Back at the WC. 🙂

  27. Dannyboy

I wonder if Wenger will blast his darling baby boy in the same way he did to Theo when he mentioned prioritising playing at the World Cup over getting fit for Arsenal.

Think that was the first and only time Wenger swore in a press conference wasn’t it?

  28. Dony

Pedro, biggest game of the season coming up and you get people focused on Diaby??

If we beat chelsea, we’re legitimate title contenders. The confidence level + players returning might give us the momentum to edge it. A loss or draw and it’s groundhog day…

Would love nothing more to see Shearer’s predictions on MOD then. Maybe wipe the smug look off Lineker too…

  29. Romford Pele

Josip, I saw that. What did you think of it? I thought it was a good team but would change it if we’re going on pure talent alone.

  30. Rosicky@Arsenal

    @ Guns of Brixton

How u compare Rosicky with Diaby mate???

Rosicky has played quite well for the club and even at 32/33 he gives his 100% and that dumb Diaby is just sucking the clubs money!!!

  31. Thank you and goodnight

No one is saying diaby isn’t unlucky. But that’s an irrelevance, he’s taking up a squad place and drawn out vast sums in wages that could of gone to a better player. Sorry there is no room for sentiment when vast sums of money are involved, especially in today’s football world. Sorry, always thought he was over rated. Let’s be honest, when he was fit how many of you can remember stand out games that diaby had…..3-4 maybe?
Best thing he’s done in an Arsenal shirt in my eyes, is knocking that cunt John Terry out.

  32. Wallace

“I quite liked Coquelin at FB to be honest.”

yeah, he’s got everything you need to play there. although i think i remember him saying he didn’t enjoy it, the few times he had to cover there.

you’d think Zelalem’s going to be pushing for more action next season. where to play all these talented midfielders?

  33. Romford Pele

“Let’s be honest, when he was fit how many of you can remember stand out games that diaby had…..3-4 maybe?
Best thing he’s done in an Arsenal shirt in my eyes, is knocking that cunt John Terry out.”

    Fully agree.

Some people try to paint him out to be better than something he is. He’s had a few outstanding games but it’s masked by a lot of games where he was completely ineffective and did.

And then he would do silly things like getting sent off stupidly…

  34. somecallmemystic

I would swop both Campbell and Cole, for Keown and Winterburn.

It is not that I consider the latter players as being better individuals, more that the Famous Back Four were fantastic as a whole unit.

  35. Romford Pele

“you’d think Zelalem’s going to be pushing for more action next season. where to play all these talented midfielders?”

Tbh mate, I don’t really like Zelalem. Maybe he’ll grow on me but I much prefer Dan Crowley personally. And like you say, if Ox and JW are already struggling for game time centrally, how can there be room for Zelalem?

  36. Romford Pele

“It is not that I consider the latter players as being better individuals, more that the Famous Back Four were fantastic as a whole unit.”

That’s fair. I’d also have Gilberto in for Cesc but that’s open for opinion. Personally I preferred Edu over Gilberto back then too.

  37. Dissenter

The only thing I can’t forget about Diaby is that weak-ass own goal at old Trafford. Heading into his own net, without any pressure and costing us a game.
To be fair, I recall his horrible injury at Sunderland too.
The lad should just retire, coaching beckons.
No one else is giving him a regular contract after Arsenal. All he’ll get is a pay-as-you-play contract.

  38. Wallace

    RP

yeah, if all our midfielders were fit Jack – on current form – is nowhere close to first choice. if Wenger continues with the Ox centrally Jack’s really going to have to raise his game.

  39. Josip Skoblar

    Romford
It’s essentially the Invincibles + Overmars. I often think that if we had kept Petit for a few more years, the Vieira-Petit pair in midfield would have helped us dominate the EPL and win more titles. This was great loss and, for Petit, a bad career move.

  40. Dissenter

There cannot be a better time to announce Arsene’s contract on Monday, if we beat Chelsea.
” AFC is delighted to announce that Arsene Wenger has signed a renewal of his contract. Arsene has served this club and led us in 1000 games…

Will this motivate the players to want to beat Chelsea? Stranger things have been used to drive players in squeaky bum time.

  41. Romford Pele

Wallace – but doesn’t the Ox just go back to the wing when Ramsey comes back? Unless Wenger wants to keep with this 4-1-4-1 that we’ve seen in the last two games?

  42. Josip Skoblar

If we beat Chelsea, we’re definitely title contenders, but it’s a massive IF…
We ought to take Liverpool very seriously at this stage. Their attacking line is superb and they play with confidence. They could win all their games.

  43. Wallace

    RP

yeah, that’s probably how it will go. but i think Wenger really likes having a guy in the middle of the field who can go past players.

  44. Romford Pele

Josip, I agree that Vieira-Petit was possibly the best duo we had. Both Petit and Overmars made the wrong moves going to Barca but you can see why they did it at the time.

These X1s are always subject. The duo we had in Vieira-Petit were both very effective but then you could argue that Cesc was more naturally talented than both. It’s like Ljungberg was a hugely effective player for us but IMO Hleb was a naturally better footballer. All subjective of course and doesn’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things.

  45. Dream10

    Josip Skoblar & Romford Pele

    – On the basis of talent in each position, could be the best XI. Maybe Keown can replace Campbell for some.

    – Josip: Remember reading that Petit did not like the physical part of the game in England.

  46. Wallace

If we beat Chelsea, we’re definitely title contenders, but it’s a massive IF…
We ought to take Liverpool very seriously at this stage. Their attacking line is superb and they play with confidence. They could win all their games.

yeah, i agree. Liverpool have the momentum. although it would be far and away the weakest team to ever win it, if they do.

  47. DUIFG

Zalalem is one for next 2-3 yrs, he is only 16, looks like a boy currently, in comparison to barkley you cansee he needs to put some meat on.

  48. Josip Skoblar

  49. Romford Pele

Yeah Wallace, it’s an interesting dynamic having Ox running past people through the middle. I do like it for sure. But then I also like having a central playmaker which is why I like 4-2-3-1. Maybe Ox can alternate with Ramsey beside a combative DM. Obviously poses more questions about Wilshere though.

  50. Romford Pele

“it would be far and away the weakest team to ever win it, if they do.”

I dunno if you can say weak. Any team that wins the league can’t really be weak because they’ve finished above everyone else. It’s more a case that they would’ve hidden their deficiencies better than anyone else. That and also playing once a week without having injuries to their major players has benefited them immeasurably.

  51. Josip Skoblar

    Romford
Good points. I agree, natural talent doesn’t mean that you’re necessarily the most effective player in your position for the team. (e.g. Hleb and, to a lesser extent, Cesc)

    Dream10
Surprising because I always thought that Petit had the skills and physicality to play well in the EPL.

  52. Al

Petit was one of the worst sales the club has ever made.. . .him and pv4 was most likely the best center midfield partnership in the world and we kind of just threw it away.

The have chezzer as a substitute over lehman lol. Crazy

  53. Danny

Surely when a player is injured for a long time the insurance company pays his wages? I mean if I say break my leg coming or going to/from work and afterwards I’m off for 3 months, my work place is covered by the insurance company. Isn’t this what a health insurance policy is all about?
I can’t believe Arsenal have been paying Diaby’s wages all this time.

  54. Wallace

“It’s more a case that they would’ve hidden their deficiencies better than anyone else.”

    yeah, well put.

  55. Mike

The negative comments on Diaby are harsh. No doubt it came from an interview in France and he will have just been answering a question. Not surprisingly, they’re more focussed on France than Arsenal… Plus, he did say he hoped to play for Arsenal but hadn’t given up on the world cup. Yes, it’d be great if he had answered that he couldn’t give a shit about the WC but wanted to be spot on next season, but that wasn’t really very likely…
Mind you, some of the positive commets are a little OTT. But I would like to see him back.

  56. Mark

Obviously it’s not Diabys fault that his body is broken but we’re not a bloody charity! Does anyone know when his contract runs out? It would be nice to have a body in the squad that contributes to the cause. As much use as a chocolate teapot.

  57. Thank you and goodnight

    @A1
Totally agree with you about Viera/petit midfield pairing. Very few central midfield ‘ s will ever compare in the EPL if not Europe. Fergie even went as far to say they were the best 2 he’s ever seen as well.

  58. TheBayingMob

Here’s the scenario, because it’s true of most Arsenal players (like Robin Van Persie) … Diaby will get fit (World Cup or not), then play a whole season for us next year, he’ll actually look half decent at times, then he’ll FUCK OFF AT THE END OF HIS CONTRACT FOR A SIGNING ON FEE SOMEWHERE ELSE. You read it here first. Arsene Wenger MO. That’s the way it works … Not Diaby’s fault, but the man who insanely gave a crock a five year deal, it’s his fault.

Wenger in 2009 … “Abou is a great player with huge presence on the football pitch and he has the potential to be an extremely influential part of Arsenal for many years to come.”

    LOL!

  59. the_real_andy

dunno the rules and laws in england nor especially for football but in austria one´s employer pays 5 weeks a year in case of injury/sickness which does not allow one to work. whether it´s the same in england and – more importantly – in football business I don´t know.

would be pretty harakiri from insurance groups to deal it this way. considering the insurance group wants to make profit – you generally have 2 or 3 players out injured every time over a year so they pay around 1 million a month or more to pay the wages, meaning they need to earn at least 50 % or 100 % more from all other wages. I would estimate they need to earn 2 million a month, 24 million a year from every club?!?! doubt it

  60. Thank you and goodnight

    @The Baying Mob
Agree he has been a waste of money mate. But as for playing a whole season next year, well I really think diaby ‘ s body is just not up to it. If you get 20 games a year out of him you’ll be lucky.

  61. Pedro

Diaby doesn’t defer his wages and he’s not one of the best midfielders at the club.

People lose their minds when it comes to our crocks.

    Average player who had potential.

  62. Thank you and goodnight

    @Pedro
Well me and Romford definitely agree with you on that one mate. An unbelievable waste of money, so much for Mr frugal Arsène.

  63. Goner Joe

Yes he said all that but he also talked about playing for Arsenal again this season after getting all clear from the medical bods. But you left this statement out of your post a bit like the media with an agenda. I wonder what your agenda is?

  64. Samir masri

Average player who had potential? I don’t think so mate. Ramsey was exactly like him and now turn out great. But you could argue Ramsey was young and still is. And diaby is still in his prime. But his career could be over very soon.

  65. Paulinho

Diaby always has been and always will be a shit footballer. Crap passer, no vision, no composure, no stamina. Another example of a player’s quality being inflated by being absent.

He just has the physical abilities to catch a team off guard if they’re not on it (Liverpool away last season) but aside from that he’s next to useless.

  66. Danny

After watching our non existent midfield against the Scum, I hope Diaby can play against Chelsea, we desperately need someone to hold the ball up.

  67. goonerDNA

Diaby is a good player with a serious injury problem…..he’s exactly the type of player we need just not the player we need because of his injuries

  68. Paulinho

BL – I don’t think it is. He’s one of those players that plays his best after a long absence, but once he gets a run of games going he just hits a wall, and gets progressively worse and worse. The surging runs completely dry up, and he just turns into a static load of nothingness.

If you want to see one of the worst midfield performances EVER by a central midfielder, just watch Diaby against Barcelona in 2010.

  69. Rhys Jaggar

Ivan Gazidis should tell Wenger that he doesn’t care if Diaby is ‘like a new signing’, Arsenal are buying a first-choice defensive midfielder and that’s that. Diaby is either a squad player in 2014/15 or nothing. If he plays 20 games well next season and is challenging whoever is got in, then good luck to him in 2015/16. If he doesn’t he should be let go with regret.

Bendtner ‘wants £104k’. And I asked Jennifer Lopez for a fuck.

You know what: she took one look at me and told me to ‘fcuk off!’

But hey: maybe she likes big Nik?!

  70. Pedro

TYAG, reading the sympathy about him is so boring… he’s averaged less than 10 league games a season.

Ship him on. He’ll be ok.

  71. Aaron Lemon

I have to say I am a bit disappointed with the Diaby hate.

Firstly, yes perhaps e should have kept his mouth shut regarding the world cup. But nobody here knows what Wenger’s take on it is – what if like some have said he somehow does go (unlikely) and does get a game or two? It’ll do him some good, and put him in the shop window potentially.

When we signed a contract we also agreed to look after him. You think he enjoys never playing? You think he likes watching us or having to fuck off abroad and sort himself out instead of playing in the prem? I highly doubt the answer is yes.

He had all the talent to be a title winner and he will likely retire with nothing to his name barring a nice bank account.

People have done nothing but lambast Diaby for the last 3 years like being injured is his fault or he’s a lesser person because of it.

‘Arsenal should have sold him’ – you tell me how you sell a player like Diaby? You can’t.

‘Arsenal should have released him’ – why? We signed a contract with HIM as well. In that we agree to look after him should we have to. That’s what we’ve done. How many Liverpool fans are calling for Lucas to be sold? None because they know he’s class. People even talk about selling Wilshere due to his injuries.

There is more to life than simply winning matches and we should look after our own, and that’s what we do. I couldn’t give a flying fuck what we pay Diaby or how long he’s here for – I am proud that we are the sort of club that sticks by our players when they’re injured instead of binning them off. That’s what people of moral fibre actually do for other people.

We can argue over his quality, etc etc, fine – but that’s nothing to do with doing the right thing and the right thing is you stick by your players and support them (as a manager). We should be proud to have that sort of class.

Argue about his worth to the team til you’re blue in the face but going on about getting rid of him when he’s injured really shows some of you up for who you really are. Disgusted, really!

  72. goonerDNA

Danny, Come on he hasn’t played for ages and if he did he would get injured once again I think its time everyone more importantly Wenger gives up on Diaby

  73. Aaron Lemon

And another thing – whether or not Diaby takes up a squad place again isn’t his fault – that’s Wenger’s choice.

People should direct their anger at him for not supplementing the team not at Diaby for being part of it.

  74. Radio Raheem

I am a fan of Diaby’s. When fit and on form there are few midfielders who come close in his combination of physique and technique. He can be special. He is also prone to the odd over-dribbling. If he was injury free long enough he might have played long enough to develop better consistency in his game.

Rather some posters exaggerating Diaby’s worth, I feel that many have short memories or they seek to counter what they find see as exaggerated appraisal of Diaby’s worth.

That said, I suspect he’ll have a good season next. It’s his last one on his contract. Not that I am implying foul play but they all seem to.

If he does it’ll be a dilemma as to whether he should be given a contract extension. A pay-as-you-play offer should only suffice if it doesn’t hinder our signing a less injury prone midfielder.

    Diaby… can we move on?
The man who never was, shame.
I saw that Guardian all-time Wenger starting XI. Found it interesting in the context of time. Barring Fabregas its been roughly 10 years since any of them have been in the side. Telling.

  76. Danny

    @goonerDNA
You’re right for sure but until Aaron comes back we need someone to hold up the play in the midfield which Ozil and Jack were doing.

  77. Mark

No personal hate for Diaby at all. It’s not his fault. But this is a football club/business – how long do you wait? If he was fit for more than 10 games is he any better than what we have. I would like a superior version of Diaby who won’t break so easily. I just want what’s best for the Arsenal going forward.

  78. Niki B's Soldier

“Let’s be honest, when he was fit how many of you can remember stand out games that diaby had…..3-4 maybe?
Best thing he’s done in an Arsenal shirt in my eyes, is knocking that cunt John Terry out.”

I beg to differ. 2012/13 season… Liverpool vs Arsenal, Diaby was immense in that game and we probably wouldn’t have won it without him, maybe drew. If we didn’t win, we wouldn’t have made top four. Just saying 🙂

  79. Jamal

The only memory i have of Diaby is that pathetic own goal he scored against Man Utd when under no pressure at all and that was how long ago?

    4-5 years ago i think.

  80. Radio Raheem

Initially I was also was irked by all the talk of him playing at the WC. But if you read his reply to question put to him he said something like “…if I am playing all things are possible” Not quite the “I am fighting fit to make the WC” headlines suggest.

Still you could accuse him of being naive. He should empahsised playing for Arsenal, helping us finish the season strongly, his sadness at not being part of what is a close title race blah blah blah…

But who knows he might have said all that…just wasn’t ‘interesting’ enough.

  81. Paulinho

“Rather some posters exaggerating Diaby’s worth, I feel that many have short memories”

    Lol Radio, the irony!

In his last two games before his injury (Montpellier, City) he was absolutely dreadful, and yet several refer to that period as a time when he showed what he could do “when he was fit”.

The 2009/10 season was probably the only real season he was fully fit, and he just fell apart that season. Never forget the Wigan match (where we blew the two goal lead) and Diaby just ambling back into position, not bothering to track the Wigan player for their first goal. He was basically the poster-child for the self-entitled ‘Wenger youth’ that contaminated our team between 2008/11.

He had certain qualites but it was completely reliant on the opposition adopting a half-hearted press. If they pressed aggressively he couldn’t cope (dwelled on the ball instead of releasing) and if they dropped deep he was clueless as well because he wasn’t comfortable facing a wall of players sitting deep. His dribbling was completely reliant on players committing themselves.

  82. Mark

IMO it doesn’t matter what he did/didn’t say in the article. We should move him on an open a place in the squad for a new signing or promote a youngster with potential. Preferably a new signing but we are still managed by the Pied Piper.

  83. jwl

In my mind, Diaby represents exactly what is wrong with Wenger and why he should resign this summer. DCM if vital position, we have won sweet fa since vieira left, and Diaby was supposed to be his replacement but it was obvious long time ago, after many injuries, that plan was not going to work but Wenger continued on anyways.

Didn’t Wenger say a couple of years ago that Diaby was a good boy, he didn’t drink or smoke, so he deserved another contract – what kind of attitude is that? I would prefer a healthy player who drinks than a constantly injured teetotaler.

  84. Thank you and goodnight

    @Aaron
Not blaming diaby at all. Totally wenger’s fault, should never have been given another 5 year contract extension. But also agree with Pedro that he was over rated. Who here can remember Viera s debut for Arsenal? By the end of the game it was obvious the guy would be a superstar. Have you ever felt that way about diaby?

  85. Romford Pele

“He had certain qualites but it was completely reliant on the opposition adopting a half-hearted press. If they pressed aggressively he couldn’t cope (dwelled on the ball instead of releasing) and if they dropped deep he was clueless as well because he wasn’t comfortable facing a wall of players sitting deep. His dribbling was completely reliant on players committing themselves.”

    Yeah this^^^ really.

Lol didn’t he also admit to owning and wearing a Spurs shirt?! What a douche. I have no qualms in admitting that I just don’t like him.

  86. Paddy got up

Can’t believe people on here feeling sorry for Diaby.. Fuck me you people must be easily pleased!!
Bloke is a leech, as Pedro says is working for his own goal of the World Cup. Only reason he is at Arsenal is because he’s up Wengers rear and French of course!
Only way he should go to the World Cup is if he gets tickets in the French fans ballot!!

  87. salparadisenyc

    THAG

Diaby had shades of the player he could be but never strung it together for any length of time to dicate this level of commitment/patience for the player. A ruthless manager pulls the plug a couple years back and moves on, in essence serving the clubs best interest, not the player.

Agree never was he comparable to Vieira, but then who is?

  88. Radio Raheem

    Paulinho

Was that City away? If it is I remember us outplaying City second half no small part due to Arteta-Diaby with Ramsey tucked in left of midfield.

It’s hard for most to feel sympathy for Diaby I get it. It’s easier to paint his past performances negatively.

I still wouldn’t mind if we let him go after having a good season. But I won’t deny he is a good player when fit.

  89. Josip Skoblar

    Thank you and goodbye
I saw Vieira’s debut against Leeds (3-0). He was the boss in midfield, a real star. I was stunned. By the end of the game, the crowd was chanting his name.

  90. jwl

“Keane and Vieira were often called defensive midfielders, but that’s not really what they were. They were generals. They directed play from the base of their team’s attack. They kept it simple. They covered the ground. They passed it short.

They didn’t do tricks or score a lot of goals. They left that to the stars: Giggs, Beckham, Dwight Yorke, Van Nistelrooy, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Robert Pirès. The job of the generals was to win the battle in the centre, to dominate the opposition, to drive them back, to break their hearts, so the stars could pick them off.”
    ——————————–

That’s from Guardian article last week about Steven Gerrard and it describes very well what Arsenal are missing since Vieira left.

  91. Paulinho

Romford – He also said the fans at the Emirates are too easy on the players and they should criticise more. When I think of that and his annoying lackadaisical performances it just winds me up even more when I think of him.

  92. Paulinho

Radio – He wasn’t good in that game. He got taken off after 70 minutes.

It’s actually pretty easy to play through City at the Etihad, doesn’t mean the midfield had a particularly good game. Even this season we progressed to their penalty area very easily and could have scored more.

    Always an open game there.

  93. James wood

Would Diaby be paid his salary from an insurance set
    Up by Arsenal.
Or would Arsenal be paying his salary.?

Anyone in Diaby’s position in a normal job would have
Been retired on medical grounds by now.

  94. Romford Pele

Yeah Paulinho – he was always a load of hype for me. Along with Song, Denilson etc, I wasn’t a fan. Didn’t help when Wenger used to say stuff like he was the best player in France, which in itself is BS. That said, I do think Wenger has cut his losses on him now and chosen to prioritise Ramsey.

Diaby had a very lax attitude which did my head in. Maybe he’d thrive in a team that played purely on the break but overall i’m not interested. Very rarely, if at all, could he ever bring a team through a game single-handedly. Decent player and has some good traits but nowhere near the hype afforded to him by Wenger and some Arsenal fans.

  95. salparadisenyc

With Ramsay coming the fore Diaby has been made even more redundant.
Rambo!!! Need to keep this man fit.

  96. Keyser

“What a douche. I have no qualms in admitting that I just don’t like him.”

Romford Pele – Lol so it just comes down to irrational hate ? Kaboul’s his mate isn’t he ? Gave him one of shirts or some rubbish.

Paulinho – “He was basically the poster-child for the self-entitled ‘Wenger youth’ that contaminated our team between 2008/11. ”

Lol the funniest thing you’ve ever written on here was when you said you were always objective.

  97. Romford Pele

“Romford Pele – Lol so it just comes down to irrational hate ? Kaboul’s his mate isn’t he ? Gave him one of shirts or some rubbish.”

Lol that is part of it because I don’t think he’s all there in the head. That said, I just generally don’t think he’s that good. I acknowledge some of the good traits he has but overall I don’t see the hype.

  98. N5

This is a really strange question to ask on Le Grove, but I know lots of you use Twitter, is it worth signing up or is it just as annoying as Facebook?

  99. Radio Raheem

    Paulinho

I have done some googling. Turns out Diaby and Podolski were taken off on 71′ for Giroud and Walcott. That seems like an attempt to win the match (and protect an injury prone player). Koscielny scored our equalizer later on.

I don’t remember Diaby singularly playing badly that match. I think the whole team was poor first half.

  100. bigper

agree diaby has had more than enough chances but cant believe so few people rate him. if he was actually ever fit he would be incredible. I think he is quite naïve in the way he plays but really I think that is down to his lack of game time and therefore not much experience. he is exactly the type of player we are crying out for

  101. Niki B's Soldier

No hype, just think slating the guy is a bit of a raw deal given the circumstances. He was never given a real chance. Like Ramsey for instance, we could see he had potential, but he was playing shit. After stringing a few games together after a few seasons with the club he started showing his talent, then he got “that” injury. Came back and was again playing shit, but Wenger persisted playing him and eventually after getting a few games under his belt he flourished again into the player he is now. We bought Ramsey when he was 16, he is 23 now. 7 years it took him to actually start becoming vital for the team. +- 1 year of injury. Diaby? different story. Maybe if he could have strung together a few games over a few seasons he’d be a great player.

  102. Paulinho

Keyser – You couldn’t be anything other than objective to come to that conclusion, especially in the face of all the propaganda that was shoved in our faces by the likes of you, claiming they were all wonderfully talented because Lord Arsene had identified them as the chosen ones.

  103. Romford Pele

“This is a really strange question to ask on Le Grove, but I know lots of you use Twitter, is it worth signing up or is it just as annoying as Facebook?”

I think it’s a million times better than Facebook but others may disagree. You pretty much find out everything first through that over any other source.

  104. N5

Cheers RP, I was only going to use it for Football stuff, but I just didn’t know if it was as annoying as that feed in facebook where you get a million notifications and just pictures of peoples dinners.

  105. MidwestGun

Diaby to me is similar to the “Yeti”. Legendary, seldom seen thing that likes to climb mountains.
Plus, I seriously distrust anyone who doesn’t drink. No offense to those that dont, I just don’t trust you.
