Arsene has bums squeaking

by .

Bad morning people. I lost my wallet on the bus. I’m not proud of admitting I jumped on a bus and I have to accept the karma punishment for doing so.

I hate the bus.

So what’s going on with football and god? Well, I’ve been chatting with him about it.

‘God, I know we’re not close, but here’s the deal, you take Chelsea to

extra time and I’ll make a sacrifice to you. Not major, I’m talking token.’

Then this morning, I was like, where’s my wallet?

It’s a sign.

So what else have we to chat about? St Patricks day was fun. So much foam hat hilarity. That time of year where all my English friends pretend they have loose Irish heritage (which is quickly superseded by Scottish or Welsh dependent on rugby or independence). So on the Irish theme, where are our Irish players? Feels like an untapped market for Arsenal. There are a lot of solid Irish players in the league and we have a heritage of bringing them though the ranks… so what’s gone wrong?

In other news, the AST revealed we have £100m to spend this summer, but there’s a chance it won’t be spent by Arsene. Gotta say, really not fussed. I think i’d prefer to be in an exciting project like the Liverpool one than in the monotony of the same Arsene Wenger show we get every year. I’d certainly not be keen to see three more years of Arsene… unless it was three more years of seriously progressive Arsene.

I love that we’re in the mix this season, but there’s that nagging reality that we could be in a far better position with a bit more planning combined with more ambitious thinking throughout the club.

Just my thoughts. I know many Arsenal fans break down into seizures at the thought of a new manager. It’ll be a tough post manager hire, but if it’s well executed and we don’t have an exodus, you could see a Martinez like impact. Maintainence of style, a new approach to fitness, improved scouting network and a ruthless approach to filling squad gaps… there are so many quick wins… and to Wenger’s absolute credit, he’ll be leaving the framework of a title winning side.

Ivan, it’s all on you if he leaves.

… Pedro believes in you. Which is all that matters.

So Cazorla, Ramsey and Gedion all sign new contracts.

I’m very pleased about the latter 2. Obviously I’m somewhat pleased about Cazorla extending too but like a few on here have already mentioned, having him in the starting XI unbalances us. I worry him extending means we will not go out and buy that pacy wideman we desperately need and that we will persist with Santi on the left which clearly is ineffective in the big matches and away from home.

Agree also RE our lack of playing identity. We have a handful of players who suit a counter-attacking game and then a few players who suit possession football. This needs to be addressed in the summer. I personally think we are closer to being an effective counter attacking side with the likes of Theo, Ox, Ozil, Ramsey, Rosicky and Gnabry than a possession side. We are piss poor at keeping the ball presently so I want us to stay away from possession suited players. Which brings me back to Cazorla, who would be perfectly suited for a possession outfit. Same with Jack

‘I think RM could win the CL this year.’

I second that. Their front 3 of Ronaldo-Benzema-Bale looks unstoppable and they have a very decent midfield in Di Maria, Modric and Alonso. Their defence is quite strong too and Ancelotti has been there and done it twice before with Milan

  3. WengerEagle

    Bayern Munich
    Barcelona
    Real Madrid
    Atletico Madrid
    PSG
    Chelsea

And presuming an unlikely comeback in either match tomorrow-

    Borussia Dortmund
    Olympiacos

What a quarter final line up that is, possibly the strongest it’s ever been. Outside of Olympiacos, you could argue that they are the 7 best teams in Europe.

  4. kwik fit

Lol Midwest I’ll try not to make a habit of it 😉

The Chavs had a real easy game tonight , so Maureen should have no problem getting the boys up for us on Saturday.

  5. kwik fit

Diaby working like mad to get back. Training at altitude in French Alps this week. Back atAFC April 1.
April fools day …..coincidence? I think not 😉

  6. MidwestGun

With our current defensive and some speed and power up front as mentioned. Ox, Theo, Ozil’s vision, Ramsey with late finishing, I would love to see us develop a quick counterattacking style. Which is why it makes absolutly no sense to me to have Giroud.

  7. WengerEagle

    Same Story

That’s the thing though, Messi clearly isn’t fully fit and despite his unbelievable statistics it is showing in his general performances for Barca aside from his hat rick performance at the weekend and his glorious performance v Man City at the Nou Camp. Ronaldo has looked the more impressive this whole season IMO but Messi clearly isn’t 100%.

I reckon he’s saving himself for the World Cup and is paranoid about picking up another injury. For him, winning the world cup is the missing piece of his legacy as the greatest player to ever play the game

Spot on mate. Having Giroud up front completely contradicts playing a counter attacking game. It’s why I want him sold, some people want him as a back up striker but what’s the point if he doesn’t suit the style of football we are trying to play?

Podolski should be sold too IMO, he’s just too static and ineffective for me to play in a 4-3-3. He’s more suited to a 4-4-2 as a CF

    Lool Thomas

    Opposition players dickhead

Fuck Chelsea it couldn’t happen to a nicer team

    _____

What’s your point? Still stupid wishing injury to other players. R*tard.

  10. MidwestGun

    WE –
Yep, pretty much agree with that. Love Poldi’s team spirit and finishing but his playing style makes us too narrow. So reluctantly I agree we should sell him.

  11. WengerEagle

We should also sell one of Arteta or Flamini in the summer and keep the other one as a squad player. I’d personally rather we sold Arteta as he’s a couple of years older and his legs have completely gone which is a shame really as h’s much better than Flamini on the ball.

These 2 have really left us exposed this year at times and most glaringly in the 5-1 hammering at Anfield where the lack of protection for the back 4 was embarrassing.

Signing an athletic CDM is just as vital as signing a quality, mobile CF this summer

  12. kwik fit

Could you guys just imagine if Abou Diaby came back from long term injury and propelled us to premier league glory………………………….Nah I thought not.

  13. MidwestGun

    WE –
I agree Cdm is vital. Tired of recycling people in that position. Romford is big on Carvalho. Havent really seen him enough. Just know they want 29mill for him.

  14. WengerEagle

The question is ,should we break the bank and blow our whole budget on a world class CF and CDM this summer or sign 4-5 players all in moderate price ranges, say in the £15-20 million bracket?

    Say, for example:

    Costa- £32 million
    William Carvalho- £35 million

    Or:

    Benteke- £20 million
    Schneiderlin- £10-15 million
    Griezmann- £20 million
    Ginter- £10-15 million

  15. MidwestGun

    WE –
I dont think there is anyway in hell we do option 1, as I mentioned earlier, Wenger and the scouts have pretty much ruled Costa out. So probably a watered down version of option 2.

  16. MidwestGun

    WE –
Ya, he kept Santi and Monreal underwraps but I dont think it was a coincidence that they were from same club. Is there a bankrupt club out there with a top CF and Cdm we could rob? Lol.

  17. WengerEagle

    Midwest

Haha that would be sweet mate! What about the other Spanish clubs, any talent left in Valencia or Sevilla?

Carlos Bacca looks a player and Ivan Rakitic is pure quality in midfield.

Portuguese league always seems to be stacked to the brim with talent as well, Fernando’s available on a free this summer and he’s a very good CDM. As for striker, Jackson Martinez? Although he’s unproven outside Portugal.

  18. MidwestGun

With Wenger most likely at the World Cup, if they dont play for their national team, probably no chance of signing.
I saw on another site, a statistical breakdown that showed J Martinez wasnt all that great. But honestly, ive only seen him play once or twice.
I thought part of the reason we got Ozil is because then German players would want to play here?

  19. WengerEagle

    Midwest

If we were going German, my two choices would be Lars Bender for CDM and Draxler as a false 9 CF.

I think Draxler could enjoy the same success TH14 did converting from a LW to a ST, he’s that talented and his build is ideal.

Kevin Volland and Lassoga are interesting options as out and out German strikers too.

  20. MidwestGun

    WE –
I like former Dortmund players because they play that quick counterattacking style, and would be a good fit. It’s fun to watch when its working too. The style we will most likely play the rest of the season could be really ugly. But if we win 1-nil every game. I guess I will live with it. 😀

My nerves might be shot, tho.

  21. WengerEagle

Someone on here today was saying we should be seriously looking at Hoffenheim’s Roberto Firmino in the summer and I completely agree, his stats are astounding and he looks unbelievably gifted going by ScoutNation’s video of him.

In a statistic sheet released by Opta earlier this month; Out of Brazil’s main attacking midfield options (Firmino, Neymar, Coutinho, Oscar, Lucas Moura & Willian) Firmino is higher than all of those players in Goals/Assists, Dribbles per Game, Clear Cut Chances Created per Game and his WhoScored rating is also higher than all of those names suggested.

  22. Zacharse

    here’s the question:
you take a cast off from each top club in the premier. someone out of form who could come in for a second wind in our squad. who arsene could buy for a ‘steal’

  23. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

Fulham yoots won their 1/4 final tonight
The won we used to do really well in!

They have some good kids coming through we would be well wise to start sniffing round them

Dembele , Roberts , Williams all have pace and technical skill

    Get involved arsene

  24. akkimaniac

Jay Rodriguez should be selected, has been awesome this season. And no matter what anyone says there’s no way Roy will leave Rooney out, he’s Englands talisman like it or not 🙂

  25. Jeff

I don’t suppose it’s going to make that much of a difference to the final outcome whoever Roy takes to Brazil.

  26. Jeff

Barcelona are slipping fast. Can you believe the position they’re in?

    1 Real Madrid 28 51 70
    2 Atlético Madrid 28 43 67
    3 Barcelona 28 59 66
    4 Athletic Bilbao 28 19 52
    5 Real Sociedad 28 10 46

  27. Jeff

“Giroud has landed a paltry 26 shots on target this season, from 83 attempts.”

When all is considered (i.e. minutes played, shots on goal etc.), he lies 13th in the list of Arsenal players who have better statistics than he does. I was amazed at this, absolutely amazed.

I knew he was bad but surely not 13th. Can you imagine where we might be if we had a striker who was only a tad better than Giroud?

    http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/03/18/giroud-has-a-worse-shooting-accuracy-than-12-arsenal-players-who/

  28. Jeff

    Romford,

Of course, but it’s very unusual for them to fall third at this stage. My hope is that Athletico win it this year as they’ve done so well and deserve to put one over the freely spending Real and Barca.

    RE: WengerEagle March 18, 2014 22:29:32
These 2 have really left us exposed this year at times and most glaringly in the 5-1 hammering at Anfield where the lack of protection for the back 4 was embarrassing.

Only Arteta was playing in that game.

  30. Romford Pele

“Arsenal lost against Barcelona in the UEFA Youth Cup…
    Some things never changed. lol”

You should watch the game before commentating.

  31. Romford Pele

“What about Clasie at DM? Heard he’s quite good at his age. Anyone see him play? Cheaper than Carvalho and possibly easier to get.”

No way mate! He makes our midgets look like giants. He’s unbelievably tiny, and while he’s good technically, he isn’t the most athletic and is quite weak. The complete opposite of what we want.

  32. Thank you and goodnight

    @Jeff
Also agree with you about Giroud. How anyone can defend him is beyond me. Wouldn’t even like to see him as a squad player as he brings so little to the team.

  33. Bergkamplegend

RP : I didn’t watch the whole game, and there was 2-1 for barcelona when I quit.
So I’m sorry for having presumed that we have lost against barcelona. 😉

  34. Leedsgunner

“The AST have called for a freeze on ticket prices and estimate that there will be cash reserves of around £140 million by June this year.” (Daily Telegraph)

Mind boggling isn’t? To think with such resources all we “acquired” (and I use that word loosely) in January was one crocked Kimmy Kallstrom…

Is Wenger keeping his powder dry for the summer? I have my doubts. It’s never been Wenger’s style to spend big and when he does he has consistently shown he doesn’t manage those players properly.

Reyes, Arshavin, and Ozil were all our record signings and he has mismanaged everyone of those relationships… and failed to get the best out of those players.

Strangely it’s as if Wenger cannot handle the expectation of those players and cannot coach them so that they fully express themselves and go from strength to strength all the above three players have regressed into their shell. Why? Certainly in the case of Arshavin and Ozil the squad was not supplemented with the depth needed to bring out the best in them.

It matters not in a way, how much Wenger has, he won’t spend it… unless he’s pushed to by circumstances. In any case, it’s not about spending for the sake of it… it’s about spending to address weaknesses in the team. In this we will fail because Wenger has consistently refused to address long term weaknesses in the squad.

    BergkamplegendMarch 19, 2014 09:26:50

It was unfortunate, the boys played well, even more so when they went down to 10 men and managed to equalise. Tiredness more than anything is what killed them. A lot of good individual performances. Zelalem, Bellerin, Gnabry and Akpom all stood out. I’d like to see the latter loaned to a Premier League side next season so we can assess where he’s at. Already looks a lot more refined than Sanogo to me.

  36. Romford Pele

“Reyes, Arshavin, and Ozil were all our record signings and he has mismanaged everyone of those relationships… and failed to get the best out of those players.”

    That’s a very blinkered view.

  37. Thank you and goodnight

Wenger finds it easier to handle kids, that’s why he doesn’t like expensive 26+ year olds. Expensive 26+ year olds have opinions whereas youngsters more eager to listen. Henry, Viera, Anelka Cole etc where all pups when they came to Arsenal.

  38. Bergkamplegend

Romford Pele : “It was unfortunate…”

As usual when we play them, whatever the competition. 🙁

  39. Thank you and goodnight

    @Romford
Akpom won’t be given the chance to destroy his pet project Sanogo mate. I’ll be honest I haven’t seen Akpom play, but reading on here he seems an ok player.

  40. salparadisenyc

To be fair Leeds I think the verdict is far from being cached on Ozil. I’d agree Reyes and AA23 underachieved given overall expectation. But Reyes has never really lived up to his promise.

  41. Romford Pele

TYAG – I remember being upset when Sanogo came in because I thought it’d hamper Akpom and that seems to be the case. Akpom has just turned 18 but a lot of people have been talking about him since he was 16. He’s got a good goalscoring record, built like Sanogo, but much more assured in touch, speed and skill. I don’t normally get overly excited about our youngsters. You’ll find a lot of Arsenal fans eulogising over Zelalem but I really like what Akpom provides. He already leads the line for England U19s. Scored quite a few goals when he came with the first team on the pre-season tour of Asia. But I fear if we’re signing another striker then he’ll never really get a look in since Wenger is keen on Sanogo too.

  42. Romford Pele

“Reyes and AA23 underachieved given overall expectation. ”

Reyes was very skillful but he was a bit of a flower boy tbh. Kept moaning about how there was nothing to in London?! Nothing to do in London?! Also criticised the weather all the time. But the fact Henry never liked him didn’t help.

Arshavin was a lazy bugger – you can’t really pin that one on Wenger.

  43. Thank you and goodnight

    @Romford
As I said earlier I’ve never seen Akpom play, but you and several others have mentioned him on more than 1 occasion saying he looks a better prospect than Sanogo. He must have something, so it’s a bit of a shame he’s not given a chance. From what I’ve seen of Sanogo so far I have to say I don’t think he’ll make it, surely Akpom can’t be as average as him?

  44. Dissenter

Sanogo’s elevation is too rapid and defies logic. He’s nowhere good enough to go from Ligue 2 to leading the line at a club of Arsenal’s stature. It stifles the youth system and just rips the guts out of our trainees. If he were an exceptional talent, great but we all know he’s not.
He’s one of Wenger’s pet projects that he’ll persist with at the clubs expense. He just reminds me of Denilson who has slipped back into average nothing in Brazil. I watch Ligue un once weekly and can definitely say Sanogo isn’t good enough for Ligue un.
