Toni Kroos watch | Arsenal look to beat all the stats… and Bayern

by & filed under News Review.

Arsenal vs Bayern

The good news Arsenal train kept rolling as our kids made it through to the semi final of the FA Cup. They beat Everton 3-1 at the Emirates. I totally forgot to mention it yesterday… I wanted to go, it sounded like a good game to all those who did make the trip down there.

I didn’t catch any of the highlights, but Jack Jebb scored a penalty and a nailed a freekick… with a goal from Akpom.

Great stuff. It’s funny how the FA Youth Cup, which is a cup, obviously… is seen as a barometer for future player success. We don’t do that with the real FA Cup side. We won’t be looking at the Wigan side that won last year wondering why their players aren’t playing for Madrid.

Still, we don’t win many FA Youth Cups, so it’d be nice to do so this year.

In the main news of the day, we’re taking on Bayern Munich. Arsene Wenger reckons he’s going for it. Thoughtwhen you watch the press conference, it felt like he was putting on a bit of a front. He knows that defence is an important as attack. Wenger went on a bit of a push about referees… we’ve been dealt quite a few sandwiches loaded with faecal matter of late. He’s asking for a fair game. He also made the very pertinent point that being all PC with ref distribution isn’t good for the big games because the refs can’t handle the pace when they come in from the Estonian league. I make him right, get the best refs, from the best leagues managing the best games.

Tonight is basically a massive, massive ask. Guardiola isn’t under any illusions about what can happen and he looked super focused… so we’ll see what’s going to happen.

We’re facing a night of Vermaelen at left back, which could be a bit of a horror show. Koscielny is taking to the middle, and as far as I can see, there will be no return to action for Aaron Ramsey.

I really don’t see the point in fielding our best side for this one. The league is our priority. Turning over Bayern 3-0 at their place is a beyond impossible task if you ask me. Turning over a tired Spurs because we rested key players seems far more feasible. Now, I’m not saying put out the Youth Cup kids, I’m saying play the fringe players and see what they can do.

The hope is that we don’t get spanked. Bayern are totally ruthless in attack. They boast power and pace all over the park, but they layer that with a brutal clinical edge from everywhere on the park. One player to keep a close eye on this evening is the super Toni Kroos. He’s rumoured to be off in the summer. His pass completion rate is quite incredible. We should be looking at him if Manchester United have a chance with him. A top player who wants parity with people like Gotze. We have a requirement for talent like that this summer… don’t let Moyes have him!

In other, slightly more shocking news… Uli Hoeness, the Bayern supremo is in big trouble. He’s been caught avoiding tax… not a little bit either, £15m! A whole Chamberlain worth of cash sitting in a secret Swiss bank. Prosecutors are pushing for a 7 year jail sentence. Quite unbelievable that a man that rich would bother. You’re already loaded! WHY DO YOU NEED MORE!

Anyway, you sense a bit of turbulence at the German club off the back of that.

… actually, you don’t.

Final bit of talk is about a Charity in desperate need of some help. They’re hugely down on funding after someone let them down. The Homeless FA are run by a fantastic bunch of people who look to instil the qualities in people they need to get back on their feet. If you can donate anything to help get them on track for the year, that’d be incredible.

If you’re a bit of a big deal in your organisation and you could pitch this into your CSR Department, that’d be amazing. The sort of money these guys need to keep their great work going is nothing to a bank, but it’d mean the absolute world to people who are trying to keep the organisation going.

So… if you’re looking to make a difference, please donate… but if you’re an MD or  CEO (and I know some pretty powerful business people (with BIG hearts!) read this), please get in touch if there are any strings you can pull!

This is a #GoonerFamily moment… except not as cringe, and ultimately a more powerful cause than follower count is at hand here!

Right, I’m not actually about for the game this evening. My flight to America perfectly coincides with the trip, which is either perfect, or super disappointing as I’ll either miss a spanking or the most exciting game in the clubs Champions League history!

    Savage –
I really hope they do something regarding Robben and diving. Not just because I dont like him. But it’s embarrasing for football. Everyone watching in slow mo on TV can see how bad it is and the announcers are then forced to talk about it. Then after the game, he acts all smug about it.
Disgraceful. And no I dont think it affected the outcome.
I dont want to see that crap in the World Cup either so they need to start doing something now.

  2. Romford Pele

The correlation between the booing and Ozil’s performance in that game makes no sense either. He was the best player on the park.

  3. N5

I did already apologies Bamford, I read you comment as being directed to me and nothing get’s me more annoyed on here when there are comments like “people saying” but not directly addressing the person/people you are talking about. I’ve only seen myself and Romford mention the word embarrass so could only assume all of the comment was directed at one of us! however it wasn’t so again I apologies.

  4. Leedsgunner

Racism flows both ways… it’s not just the majority being racists about the immigrants… immigrants are just as well racist about the majority.

It doesn’t make it right… but it happens. Very sad nevertheless. Solution? Treat your neighbour like you would like to be treated.

  5. Dissenter

    @Romford
Don’t disagree with you. I wasn’t calling out the entire German society.
I am just searching for answers.
It’s a small sliver of the crowds who do these silly things.
There was a banner last night, saying “gay gunners”, showing Ozil with his eyes wide open and his butt spread open.
Ozil is supposed to be a German success story, I just didn’t get the abuse from a tiny minority.

  6. gazzap

Bayern’s form in last 58 games was 2 defeats, and 4 draws and 52 Wins. One of those defeats was by us last March (the other by City). So we have just added another D to their long list of Ws. We shouldn’t be harsh on the team this morning in my view.

    WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLWWWWWWWWWWWDWWWWWWDDWWWWLWWWWDWWWWWWWWWWWD.

  7. Thank you and goodnight

Isn’t a lot of the hate aimed at Ozil from bayern fans because of who he played for in Germany previously?

Somethings definitely not right with the boy which is a shame as he is a class player.

  8. Romford Pele

Dissenter, there’ll always be those who have opposing views. I think Ozil is a success story in general; has nothing to do with his race.

I was talking to my German friend at work though and he hates this current crop. He says that whilst they’re arguably more talented than anything they’ve produced before; he says they’re all a bunch of flower boys. He prefers the old school Ballack and Sammer type players who relied on grit and determination and German efficiency. You can’t please everyone though and there’ll always be those who disapprove regardless.

I’m not pissed of at losing it’s how you lose,I’ll take a loss if it’s structured,
The first half we did well I thought 0-0 that’s fine.
Second half we started the same and finished the same what did we change or try to change to get the result ?

It was a pure face saving performance ? What was the point in trying to qualify if your not going to go for it…
I’ll tell you money ! ! Simple and dirty as that.

Our club never even set up to win that cup, back in the summer we needed players we can argue all day as to how many but we needed players,
What did lord WENGER do a couple of low level buys, one freebie who has saved our bacon, and a fortuitous super star, who plays completely on his own and looks lost ?

If we had gone there last night with a youth team to develop them for next season I wouldn’t have cared I probably would have enjoyed it more,
I sat with mates in the pub and you could see we were happy to go along for the ride.

That’s not wanting to embarrass yourself.!
Bayern.barca, yes great teams we were once as well you know, then it became about money and fans accepted that….not me

  10. Bamford13

    gazzap

It’s not a matter of being harsh on the team — the players give and gave their full effort — it’s a matter of being critical of a manager who has not built a better squad despite the fact that he has ample resources.

    N5

No worries, mate. I misread the tone of your original post. As long as you’re not an apologist for the status quo, we’re in agreement.

  11. Dissenter

    Gazzap
German football is about to get very boring, just when they are trying to sell it as a global brand.
In business, Bayern would have been charged for anti-competition
    laws.
What do you expect when they can decimate Dortmund off the pitch, by taking away Goetze and then Lewandowski so brazenly.

  12. DanC

    Bamford

You’re embarrassing. You didn’t even watch the game.

If you saw the boys fighting for every ball, keeping collectively solid, offering a threat despite our obvious flaws and keeping us in the tie then maybe you would think differently.

It just having a bit of perspective about the fact that we didnt get tanked of the best team in the world. They put everybody to the sword especially in Munich and have made short work of better teams than us.

As soon as the draw was made we were really up against it. After the first leg it was highly improbable, then without a full strength team the second leg was mission impossible.

We’re well stocked in the squad especially the midfield area so to call it neglegent that we didnt buy more in January is bullshit. We have had a freakish amount of injuries to our most well covered area.

    Who cares about Ryo?

Was he ever going to play or even come on with Gnarbry in the squad? No.

He is irrellevant in the outcome of this match.

Change the record mate, I imagine you being one of the cheer leaders shouting that we’d never make it out of the group.

We were ill equipped to win it this year and compete on 4 fronts but going out now we can concentrate 100% on the league and look forward to the cup games.

Not really a massive drama is it?

  13. Dissenter

I don’t know how anyone could criticize our efforts last night. Last night was a decent result.
Schezny needs to improve in not being so rash. For a young keeper, he’s has more that enough red cards for taking out attackers for Arsenal and Poland.
His decision making in those situations has to improve.

  14. Dannyboy

I think the most annoying thing in it all is that Eduardo got a 2 match ban for once making the most of little contact weeks after coming back from having his leg shattered. Where as Robben dived 7/8 times in the two games against us. Got multiple free-kicks in dangerous areas that could easily have lead to goals, won 2 penalties and got our keeper sent off, yet UEFA won’t do anything you can guarantee..

And then people complain when people say they have an agenda against Arsenal. When has any other player been punished for ‘diving’ apart from Eduardo?

  15. Dannyboy

    Hitman

So if we’d ‘gone for it’ and lost 6-1 and 8-1 on aggregate, would have you praised the manager for being bold?

Can’t have it both ways mate.

  16. TitsMcgee

It’s really sad that we’ve been reduced to being happy with losing a tie 3-1 on aggregate because we got a draw away from home.

Nevermind that Munich didn’t even get out of 2nd gear the whole game.

The boys did well to not get destroyed but it’s just the further pacification of the club that is the depressing part.

We play for “pride” now. Not for victories.

  18. Dissenter

    Tits,
To be fair, the tie was lost the first leg. I don’t even think it was lost to Wenger’s incompetence. It was lost to Schezny’s rashness and Robben’s guile.
After that it was just about pride and honor.

  19. MidwestGun

    Dannyboy,
The only person I can think of is Milos Kracic in 2010 was given a post match 2 game ban for diving in the Serie A. The MLS uses video replay to fine players after the fact but the fine ammount is a joke.
A 3 game ban to a high profile player like Robben in a high profile league would send a message. But i doubt it happens. His second dive was beyond a joke.

  20. Al

SOME People are reacting like we lost to some pub team and we had a right to go through.
Simply put they was better than us and we have to accept that and look at ways to close the gap.
But don’t go denying the fact we put in a stellar performance yesterday and when we had 11 men at the emirates.
Also some things went against us….the red card, injuries and the fact yesterdays Ref was garbage and biased but at the end of the day BAYERN ARE BETTER THAN US atm.

Massive game this weekend….need to really get behind the boys

  21. TitsMcgee

    Tits,

Yea and how is it we find ourselves in the “what if” game every year we get knocked out of tournaments.

“What if” we didn’t lose 2-0 at home.

“What if” we bought somebody to help.

“What if” we didn’t lose 0-4 to Milan away.

‘What if’ we didn’t lose 3-1 to Munich at home.

“What if” we didn’t try to “get by” with just Giroud.

“What if” we finished first in our group.

We play the what if game every year and at some point it must register that it’s not a coincidence.

  22. goonerDNA

Tits, Losing to the current champions of the best club competition in he world isn’t shameful, losing to Stoke is

  23. Romford Pele

“SOME People are reacting like we lost to some pub team and we had a right to go through”

Mate; it’s all agenda-driven. These people will bang on for weeks about Bayern being the best side in the world; how they’ll smash us etc. Yet a decent account is given and then they wanna moan that we didn’t beat them. But let them air their grievances – they need to take it out somewhere.

What Arsenal fan isn’t frustrated – you just need to know what you’re criticising and the circumstances that surround it.

  24. DanC

    Bamford

‘For me I can only feel frustration and disgust.’

    Frustrated yes. But fucking hell…disgust?

Id say thats a little bit of an overeaction wouldn’t you?

Disgusted at going out to Bayern M? Please.

    Hitman49

‘I’m not pissed of at losing it’s how you lose,I’ll take a loss if it’s structured,’

    What does that even mean?

  25. TitsMcgee

Tits, Losing to the current champions of the best club competition in he world isn’t shameful, losing to Stoke is”

    Who said it’s shameful?

I’m saying that Arsenal football club has been reduced to playing for pride. Moral victories and that is the sad part.

It would be one thing if it was a stepping stone to some success next year but it probably isn’t under Wenger. Winning is an afterthought. Playing as “pretty” as he can as cheaply as he can is the main goal.

  26. goonerDNA

Tits, Chesney got a red and we lost 2-0 not sure what your ranting about.

Complaining about CL failure when we haven’t won shit domestically also doesn’t help your arguement

  27. DanC

    Hitman49

‘I’m not pissed of at losing it’s how you lose,I’ll take a loss if it’s structured,’

    So according to you

‘that means if we are building a team for the future?’

Hmmmmm….right. That doesn’t make any sense. At. All.

‘No need to ask you what the d stands for then.’

Surprisingly enough the D in DanC stands for Dan. Would you like me to show you how I worked that one out?

  28. TitsMcgee

Tits, Chesney got a red and we lost 2-0 not sure what your ranting about.Complaining about CL failure when we haven’t won shit domestically also doesn’t help your arguement”

    Lol

    That proves my argument.

We can’t win the league. Can’t win in Europe. Can’t win anything but we lose a tie 3-1 on aggregate and we’re “proud”.

That’s what AFC is now. That’s my point.

Hopefully we win the FA Cup because there will be no excuse to not win that tournament now although I see people setting the stage for the excuses should we lose to Wigan.

i.e “Wigan beat City, so it’s no shame losing to them”.

  29. the_real_andy

yep the tie was lost after the first leg, reality is it was lost after szcz sending off. to be honest I think it was a wrong decision. one main part of getting sent off for denying a clear goal chance is the player has to be in control of the ball which he wasn´t. it was a penalty, no doubt about that, and a yellow card. would´ve been a far better game at the emirates and in munich respectively.

I´ve been there yesterday and the fans were great once again. I felt we really had a game plan, we tried to minimize their chances in the first half and try to kill the game in the second half. it´s a pity we´ve conceded in a moment having 7 players in your own box against 3 bayern players.

what has to be said, I don´t know whether it was very obvious in TV, we had some real real good chances in the second half when we simply didn´t manage to play the final ball. once podolski was offside but giroud reacted and wanted to get the ball but pod didn´t realize it – was a real good chance. the bad ball from neuer when gir played a real good ball to rosicky who unfortunately wasn´t aware of this chance. if he reacted properly it would´ve been a 1on1 against neuer …

ozil´s injury may well be a blessing in disguise. he´s out of form and is totally done right now so probably good for him to get a forced break and for the team to get rid of him at a time the manager didn´t have the balls to leave him on the bench. now we have 5 days rest for spuds game. they basically don´t have a centre back fit or eligible to play so could be fun. I would play pod in this game as CF:

    scz
    sag, kos, per, gibbs/verm
    flam, chambo, ramsey/rosicky
    caz, pod, gnabry

winning this game is hugely important. if we win we will basically be 4th in worst case and can concentrate on our FA cup tie

  30. MidwestGun

    Hitman –
Dont think people were being thick. Your arguement was vague. We should have tried something different 2nd half? We did. It didn’t work. We put in the 2 players we had available. We tried to win the game. We weren’t playing to save face.
You could argue that our team wasnt good enough because Wenger sucks at transfers and wont spend the money to get better players to compete in CL.

  31. Thank you and goodnight

We always seem to be building for the future…Fuck me Rome was built quicker than one of le senile ‘ s teams

  32. goonerDNA

Tits, YES losing to Wigan and saying they beat City backs up your point but it doesn’t when you’re getting onto people because they happy with the result and performance away to Bayern, it makes you sound like your just on a witch hunt

  33. Ofebs

Arsenal did not get disgraced in Munich so all is well in the AKB camp…so the story goes…

This precisely what makes Arsenal a pitiful club – a situation where some are satisfied with ‘a nearly there’ attitude year on year…really pitiful!

  34. Bergkamplegend

Thank you and goodnight : “We always seem to be building for the future”

In fact arsène started to built a decade ago.

  35. DanC

‘It would be one thing if it was a stepping stone to some success next year but it probably isn’t under Wenger.’

Due to the fact you know this 100% I take it?

    ‘That proves my argument.’

    Erm no it doesn’t.

‘We can’t win the league. Can’t win in Europe. Can’t win anything but we lose a tie 3-1 on aggregate and we’re “proud”.
That’s what AFC is now. That’s my point.
Hopefully we win the FA Cup because there will be no excuse to not win that tournament now’

So we can’t win anything now but yet we’re nailed on to win the FA cup? Make your mind up mate. Your a contradiction that can’t seperate his Wenger hate from the fact we turned up and put in a performance that wasn’t good enough to send us through. It doesn’t make it a bad performance cos the team could easily of buckled but we didnt.

And in the context ‘proud’ was meant I think you know it was about the effort from the lads not the fact we went out 3-1 at this stage.

  36. TitsMcgee

Tits, YES losing to Wigan and saying they beat City backs up your point but it doesn’t when you’re getting onto people because they happy with the result and performance away to Bayern, it makes you sound like your just on a witch hunt”

It’s not a witch hunt when we play the what if game and have been playing the what if game for years.

Bayern are better. Much better but why are they so much better than us? Maybe if we didn’t fart around in the transfer markets?

The point is not that we should have beaten them. The point is that Arsenal have been reduced to a club that can’t compete with Europe’s elite. Can’t compete domestically. It’s an accumulation. Why are we so far off the pace when we can clearly do so much more based on our financials?

9 years of “what ifs” isn’t a coincidence.

(I’m off to the new post.)

  37. Bergkamplegend

Thank you and goodnight : “We always seem to be building for the future”

In fact arsène started to built a decade ago.
…And we’re still under construction lol

  38. TitsMcgee

Due to the fact you know this 100% I take it?”

Yes because Wenger has shown over his tenure that he adapts?

    lol

“So we can’t win anything now but yet we’re nailed on to win the FA cup? Make your mind up mate.”

    Don’t be a child.

It’s been a decade almost since we’ve won anything so yes “we can’t and haven’t won anything”.

The FA CUP is his best chance in years and we are the favorites because we have the best team of the remaining 4.

If he doesn’t win then what’ll be your excuse?

We showed improvement to make Wembley?

  39. Thomas

A good season is now getting past Spurs and not being embarrassed in the CL. The loser mentality in this club is staggering and embarrassing.

  40. wenker-wanger

All these excusrs about the 10 man 1sy leg and agood effort to get a 1_1 draw. Bayern were cruising and protected their lead… We hardly had any real goal threat and were easy meat for them. Wengers arsenal are average and lack any matchwinners to turn a game. We are good at beating less than average sides , except stoke or a team thats overly physical. I will never slag off the players, they have to take direction off a senile, useless, bungling fool,
