Epic?

Good morning from me, I hope all is well in the sunshine of this February day. Arsenal vs Liverpool. It’s going to be massive. So dust off that hangover and start getting excited.

First up though, Ray Parlour was in the press talking about Arsenal’s finances. He dropped this little pearler into his Daily Mail column.

‘I understand why supporters are frustrated at the lack of trophies, but there has been an awful lot going on inside the club during that time. I know for a fact Arsene didn’t have a lot of money to spend. It all went into the stadium, trying to pay it off as quickly as they can.’

Now there Ray, this looks like a bit of creative revisionism going on here. Sure, when we moved, Arsenal were broke. We had to defer the Robin Van Persie transfer because we were strapped for cash. However, reading Ray rewriting history feels a bit PR to me.

Firstly, Arsenal are tied into a long term mortgage. So we can’t pay off the stadium early. That’s a total nonsense statement from the off. Secondly, we didn’t have to play the skint card through that period. Stan could have invested some of his billions in the club to give us a cash boost, but he didn’t. Why? Because it didn’t suit him to. The sustainable model simply meant that his investment was worth more when the new commercials dropped.

We’ve also always had a pretty large wage bill. Wages correlate to league position in the main. So while Wenger has done a good job over the years, he hasn’t exactly performed miracles. He’s spent less on transfers, but he’s spent a shedload of cash on wages. So much so, he cleared £500k a week off our books last summer by shifting deadwood that didn’t play.

Someone made an interesting point about transfers. Whilst the manager hasn’t had cash like City, he has had funds, he just hasn’t spent it particularly well. The summer we missed out on Chelsea, Arsene opted instead to spend £24m on a teenager from league one and Gervinho. One went on to be twice player of the year for Chelsea, the other two… well, one is in Italy after being a total flop, the other is still trying to make his mark.

Point is, Arsenal can’t plead poverty. We’ve just been impoverished compared to Chelsea and City. During that same time, Ferguson, using sustainable funds, more than matched them. So whilst money is important, it’s not the only factor that drives success.

Onto today. Liverpool. It’s going to be a tough game. I’m not hugely confident if I’m honest. Their two strikers are going to be a nightmare and I fear that away from home, they might turn it on.

Still, we’ve both had a week off. Both teams will be energised and well drilled. So the encounter doesn’t have any excuses wrapped around it. The better team will win. On paper, that’s us. How that plays out in reality is another story. Brendan Rodgers has injected a new belief into that Liverpool side. Today is a cup final for his boys. If they lose, they’re out of the title race. If they win, they close the gap and they’ll get a boost of momentum.

For Arsenal, a loss and the next 3 weeks start to look depressing. Win and it could be the start of something glorious. It’s a massive game for both side and the game has epic written all over it!

Right, see you in the comments, enjoy the game!

This season, given our poor showing against sides in the top five or six, given our obvious lack of depth, given our injury riddled team, given our palpable lack in the striking department you have to ask one very important question.

Wenger himself admitted in his interview that today’s game raised a lot of questions. But it’s not just today’s game is it? We were poor against Man U, we were poor against Chelsea, we were poor against Man City and we were poor against Everton and Southampton. That’s too many poor games against the better sides. So whatever questions Arsene thinks today’s game raises, I would suggest the same ones should have been raised and solved after any one of those games I just mentioned.

So there is only one very important question that, we as fans, should ask. Given all those known problems I listed above, why did we not address them in the January window? That’s the only question that is valid at this point. All the other ones are mere capillaries emanating from the main trunk. Why didn’t we get a striker; even a medium range one? Why did we sit on our hands all through the summer and winter windows?

Every one of us agreed that Ozil by himself would not be enough for us to seriously compete. We sort of assured ourselves that because we couldn’t get the striker in the summer, we would almost certainly get one in January. Well it came and went. So one could only assume that Arsene was and probably still is of the opinion that this squad can win something – preferably the title as I don’t think we have much of a chance to with anything else. But that appears to have taken a very early blow as Liverpool was supposed to be one of the easier games out of the run of tough matches we have coming. So here we are, fallen down badly in the first hurdle, all our hopes have quickly dissipated into oblivion.

That question has to be asked of Wenger. Why didn’t you strengthen when you had the chance? If he can be honest enough to admit to himself (even if he doesn’t say it publicly) that his confidence in Giroud is misplaced, you’d think he would do something about it. But I think he believes Giroud will deliver – eventually. Of course in the meantime, we throw away another season. This “trust” in players that persistently fail to deliver has cost the club innumerable opportunities to get that monkey off our backs. Yet it continues.

wenger wont drop monreal while he is playin like a cunt ,might affect his confidence. wait till he has a good game then drop him.
    —————————————————————–
    This sums up Wenger perfectly.

For the life of me, I could never ever understand this logic for a manager who imagines to win things.

I’ve been reading this blog for about 4 years . But this is the first time commenting(I’m a bit lazy when it comes to emails and texting) Today I feel this is one humiliation to many. Maybe if I thought thing were going to change I might feel differently. But after latest frustratingly disappointing transfer window disgrace.
How can anybody defend Wenger???? Imo this latest window he had the chance to kick on and give the whole club including us fan a lift but again choose to deflate everyone because of his stubborn outdated principles. Time for change. Wenger has taken the joy out of being a gooner it is now painful and disappointing every season and things will never change under his dictatorship.

  4. Thomas, it's up for grabs now..

    Tunnygriffboy
Cheers. I get all the anger especially at the manner of the defeat. It was a pitiful showing. At one point I picked up my iPad and was about to fire it across the room until a voice in my head shouted STOP!

We had no answer to their pace and no plan B.

But.. We’ve never been better placed in the table in recent years.. And 1 point off top. We have improved significantly over last season. That’s a start when trying to fathom a bloody result like that.

I too have been following the Arsenal as long as Gonegoonergone and I just don’t get him saying he no longer supports??

He (We) have seen Arsenal lift the title in only 6 of those 46 years so a bit of perspective is called for. We are still in with a shout this year. An outside shout but still there. It’s a big ask and we’ll probably fall a bit short.. But I also don’t see us regressing and we have the ability to improve the team.

To run off on your team sitting seconds in the PL and only 1 point behind is hard to grasp. I get the anger and the failings still evident but most likely he will cool down and we all know he does not really mean it. You can’t be a Gooner for that long and not care anymore. It’s in his blood.

Where are the Chief AKBs, Kjafc and Revvin? Hiding in their shit holes trying to figure out how to paint their Lords latest fuck ups!

They are probably with uncle Tony at untold blaming the Ref for allowing Liverpool to score that early.

  6. andy1886

N5, yup that’s what makes me think it’s best if he retires ‘gracefully’ (it’s all relative), the look of a rabbit in headlights as things unravell. At the press interview after the game you could see that he didn’t really have any answers, he looked at a loss and could only utter banal observations that you or I could have made. Arsene used to be innovative but now the game seems to be passing him by. It would be kinder to all concerned if he called it a day in the summer.

  7. lord snotty

Herr Wenger being compared on here to Saddam Hussain and Robert Mugabe. Very funny. But He actually reminds me of another dictator, one Adolf Hitler. The Psycho-analysis of the two is very similar. An egomaniac who spouts endless bullshit and believes his own bullshit. Refuses to listens to advice. Genuinely believes he is the greatest military leader of all time. But has no tactics at all. Then he ends up sitting in his bunker, Berlin in ruins, the Red Army marching through the streets, still believing that Germany would win the war. There are other parallels, although we should give Herr Wenger credit for not being a mass murderer….. But you must get my drift here.
Anyhow the guy is an embarassment, not doing the job he’s so massively overpaid for and he is leading this club to disaster. WENGER OUT!!!

  8. Cesc Appeal

    Jeff

The fact we always seem to do badly against the ‘big boys’ shows to me Wenger’s lack of tactical understanding.

It’s not hard to work us out, it’s just a lot of teams don’t have the personnel to see the job all the way through.

I agree wholeheartedly with whoever said it early, Wenger relies on individual players, he relies on his team playing well and disregards the opposition.

  9. N5

100% agree Leeds my friend and if people moan all the time it is hard to take them serious when they are correct on various points as are the people who say you must support the club blindly regardless of situation.

I will support who ever puts on an Arsenal shirt, but if they have no passion or drive and show no pride to wear that shirt then they can fuck off and I know I’ve said it over and over this evening but Wenger can fuck off now too, his look of incompetence when we went 3 – 0 down showed him to be absolutely clueless, again and not reinforcing is unforgivable. I pay so much money into this club and we get treated to performances like today, Southampton, and the atmospheres of Palace. It’s not good enough.

I’m not even sure I’m really making sense, I’m just so pissed off tonight.

  10. N5

andy1886, I didn’t stay on watching passed the 5 goal so I missed his post match interview, I’m surprised he didn’t say “why are you looking at me”. It’s really sad watching the decline.

  11. Invincibles

    @N5
Wengers always been clueless mate. Difference was he had world class players to bale him out in days gone by. As I said earlier, wenger was a lucky manager, a la Sven, but now lucks run out he’s finally being shown up as a poor manager.

  12. Jeff

    Cesc,

It was a combination of a very good Liverpool turnout against a very poor Arsenal one. We’ve said many times this season that we were able to win games even when we played badly (sign of champions) and we did win such games. However it was always against the lesser sides. That’s the key. We cannot play badly and beat the better sides. We have to be on top form, razor sharp and motivated as if our lives depended on it.

Those ingredients were missing today. Why were they missing? That’s another question. Whilst I agree that the tactics may not have been suitable for this game, I think that the greater part of our downfall stems from poor concentration and almost non-existent desire on the part of the players. You have to question why that is. I said earlier that it could be because of the transfer window which to add insult to injury (no pun intended), we ended up with Kallstrom.

  13. MidwestGun

I too have been following the Arsenal as long as Gonegoonergone and I just don’t get him saying he no longer supports??

He (We) have seen Arsenal lift the title in only 6 of those 46 years so a bit of perspective is called for.

    ____________

    This, exactly.

I probably shouldn’t have called him a nitwit. But I have been drinking, so apologies.

  14. Tim

A lot of very angry young boys wielding keyboard’s on Le Grove today.
    The personal abuse is horrific.

We were awful today. We’ve been lacklustre for months in my opinion. But we’re still up there and the team needs our backing of it could all go to shit.

Let’s just beat Manure and force through a world class striker in the summer.

P.s the Central midfield “abundance” is utter shite. Not a single one of them is playing in the right position in our current system. Arteta is too slow & weak for cdm. Chambo isn’t a cdm. Jack isn’t a cdm. Ros isn’t a cdm. Zelalem isn’t a cdm. Diaby got cancer.

  15. N5

Invincibles, you are probably right mate, I always thought he was once good but the game past him by as he failed to move with the times, but maybe he always has been bad an just had the right players to make whom ever was in charge look good.

    It could have been N5KBs

  16. Doublegooner

I wonder whether Wenger was pressurised to buy Ozil as I’m told he believed the squad was good enough without any major signings.

  17. WengerEagle

What really bothered me today was the total lack of passion displayed by the players. No one seemed to give a shit for the first 20 mins, they didn’t get on the ball and drive forward, we had no urgency in our passing and we didn’t even track back. How as professional footballers in a position to do something special like win the title can they care so little? Not one fucking player fought for the badge which is nothing short of a disgrace.

Unfortunately in Arsene Wenger we have the most mentally fragile and gutless manager in the top flight fighting for the title. He’s a serial bottler and this unfortunate character trait is instilled into his players it seems.

  18. N5

Spot on Eagle, what I wouldn’t have given for a Tony Adams to take control of that game, clapping his hands together, shouting at all of the players to pick up their faces and get on with it! no passion or leadership anywhere today!

  19. Gunnershabz

Have u realised wenger steam have never thrashed a rival big time we always get thrashed

    Man U 6-1
    Man U 8-2
    Man U 4-0
    Liverpool 5-1
    Man city 6-3

Arsenal always due a thrashing now and a again this season we had two and we suppose to be title contenders

  20. Norfolk

    Jeff

I think the question is not why didn’t we strengthen in the recent window.
The question is why wasn’t it done in the Summer.
I think the answer is that AW is far too concerned about his personal pats on the back (all 8m of them) for running Frugal FC.

  21. Bamford13

The low expectations of apologists like Jake, Savage, and Thomas are especially galling.

I’d rather listen to Liverpool supporters at the moment than this rotten lot.

‘At least we’re still in the running for top four.’
‘At least we’re better than last year.’
‘I see us making big signings this summer. We’ll be be better next year.’

I don’t know what’s worse, watching us get dismantled by Liverpool — or by City, Bayern, United — or listening to these twats make apologies for it.

  22. MidwestGun

We absolutely can not lose to Man U.
Or ill be standing next to gambon with a pitchfork and a scythe.

    Hate those fuckers.

  23. Sam

Arsenal can still win the league

    Without Wenger

    Cazorla, podolski, ozil, mertesacker etc….
This is a great squad, Wenger is the problem.
I don’t even think he studied Liverpool before this game.
    Lazy cunt!

  24. Jeff

    Norfolk,

I’m not so sure that money is the motivating factor for Wenger any more. I think it’s more a question of pride. He’s 65 and absolutely minted. He has more money than he will know what to do with so I really don’t think remuneration is what keeps him going.

Arsene I think wants very badly to revive Arsenal but he want to do it on his own terms. The problem is that those terms are no longer sufficient to win things and they haven’t been for a very long time. I am beginning to believe, like many, that Ozil was indeed a one-off which makes me very sad indeed.

People’s attention have already started turning to the summer which means they no longer believe we can salvage anything in this season. If we finish in the top four and win nothing yet again, that to me ranks as another season of failure. Others will see it as being good enough. That’s really what separates most fans when it comes to support for Wenger.

  25. Salvage

Please enough of asking for players. Costa, Suarez, Ronaldo comes to Arsenal now, This Wenger of today, will destroy them as well and they will become a shadow of themselves.
    WENGER SHOULD JUST GO.

I am looking back now and I realize that most of the ones that were on the verge of being destroyed, but had age on their side, go to other clubs and start doing well again. For crying out loud, even The forehead and Vela, players people totally wrote off under Wenger, are playing and enjoying their football right now at other clubs.
There is a problem with Wenger of Today not Wenger of old.

  26. Dale Rios

It was probably disheartening for the players when they were getting hammered and looking at their manager, their mentor for a bit of guidance or instruction or who knows maybe even a telling off to spring them into action.

Wenger just sat on the bench with the look of total bewilderment etched on his face, this was his ‘best group of players’ the mental strength that Wenger never fails to remind us about completely deserted them today.

Wenger’s ability to motivate his players has the brought into question, surely this has happened to regularly the last 3 years.

  27. Sam

    Tim,

We had a big 6’3 midfielder we sent him on stupid loan n even refused to renew his to let him walk on free.
He scored 10 goals so far this season n had an assist today.

    Chuks aneke!

  28. Doublegooner

Mourinhos been back 5 mins and already got this league by the scruff.

Wenger will never develop the nous to outdo him.

Theres been too much false hope from too many. As many times over the years when the season gets serious the team & manager fail to live up.

We’ve had two big tonkings now this season & we’re only beginning of feb.

  29. Adam A. Carbarundum

4-0 down and what does Wenger do? Same as he always does, substitutions! Can’t come at the half because that would distinguish him from an automaton. Pathetic performance from a team that is destined yet again for what? A 4th place trophy!

Thanks again for a memorable transfer window you stupid moron!

  30. gazzap

If you look at Liverpool’s performance today, it was mostly built on hard work. very hard work in the first half and a very tight defence for the whole match.
there wasn’t anything blindingly brilliant that only the most talented footballers can do.
OK so closing down and working together as a unit it a talent of sorts but really good players can be coached to do that stuff.
I know liverpool dont do that every game they play, but simple fact is they were way more up for it than we were and were coached to play that pressing game to get the 3 points. We didn’t look like we had a game plan.

Arsenal HAVE made strides forward this season so we cannot be too disappointed overall but I have to say Liverpool are also making forward strides and they don’t have the CL to worry about.

  31. WengerEagle

We are the complete opposite of Chelsea.

In Mourinho they have a manager who gets a buzz and thrives in playing the big matches, he loves them. He goes into them with no fear and instils this winning mentality into his players. Ibrahimovic said before when playing for Mourinho he felt like a Lion and that his players would kill for him. Mondays win at the Etihad is something that this Arsenal team under Wenger would just not be capable of. Mourinho dominates the dressing room and benching Casillas and selling Mata are great examples of him not giving a shit what the fans or the media thinks of him. He will do what he thinks is required for his team to win and you can’t say it hasn’t worked for him.

Chelsea have leaders and strong personalities in Terry, Lampard, Ivanovic, Cech, Eto’o, who have all been there and done that, the type of players who thrive in playing in the big matches. They also have athletes in Matic, Ramires, Hazard, Schurrle, Willian, Ivanovic, David Luiz.

Wenger is the complete opposite of Mourinho. He hates the experience of the big matches, in the last 8 years against the big sides there have been times where we already looked beaten when walking out the tunnel at the start of the match. He’s a bottler who hides when the going gets tough and uses excuses/blames officials and will never look at himself in the mirror and wonder what did he do wrong.

  32. Adam A. Carbarundum

@gazzup…What you are saying is that Wenger was outmanaged by someone who is considered a lesser in the profession. Lets be real, Brendan is not worthy of the accolades given to him, but Arsene made him look the genius today.

  33. Jake

    Adam
The subs weren’t made at 70 minutes and they all came at once. Very un-Wenger so I can’t see the point you’re trying to make or any evidence to back it up. Typical hysteria.

  34. MidwestGun

    Sal –

Thats stats not making me feel better. You got any more links to that french chick? Lol. Just kidding.

P.s. I dont live in the bible belt.

  35. Ines

Performances like this are down to not having the right motivation or game plan in games of that magnitude.
Manager is not able to make a proper game plan for certain opposition.
Manager is not able to sign right players for certain game plan he doesn’t seem to have.
Manager is not able to motivate his team.
Manager’s players show no desire, no hunger, lots of complacency.

High pressing and pacey players are essential in today’s football on the top level . Will manager realize that during the course of his next contract…

This manager has only one thing at his mind. To finish fourth. Everything else, if anything, is bonus.

  36. gazzap

People may laugh but our current biggest problem isn’t striker. Yes we need a better striker but a bigger issue is a holding midfielder. An absolute key position to keep you tight in games.
Giroud isn’t great but it doesn’t matter if you spread the goals around. You can cover over that definciency. But you can’t cover over a weak centre midfield.

Arteta/Flam or Arteta/Wilshere is not good enough, I am really scared for Wednesday because of this position. The rest of the team I am less concerned about. To be fair to Arteta he has never been a holding midfielder but Wenger seems to think he can make him into one just by wishing it so.

  37. Adam A. Carbarundum

@gazzup, our biggest problem is our lack of serious depth on defense. Today exposed Mert as slower than a snail and Kozzer having to cover that lack of depth. If we had depth in defense you would have fresher Mert and Kozzer. That’s down to the manager’s transfer record…Pathetic!

  38. Adam A. Carbarundum

Outside of an older and slower Arteta, there is nothing essentially wrong with our midfield. The real problem lies with the exhaustion of said players, thanks to the inactivity of our illustrious manager, who knows more than any of us.

As soon as we realize that reality, the sooner I will finally have a solid nights sleep…cause we all know that Arsene Knows Best!

Let me know when that is true cause then I can treat my hemorrhoids of Wenger’s Disease.

  39. Bamford13

Wenger acknowledges that today’s performance “raises questions” about the team and manager.

What, in your opinions, are some of those questions?

    For me:
    1. Did Wenger prepare/select the side properly for this game?
    2. Is this side good enough to compete for the title?
    3. Why were additional quality players not signed in the summer and January?
    4. Is this side good enough to beat top sides?
    5. Why, from the start, has no one of note in the football world (besides Wenger) believed this side was good enough?

What do you all think? What other questions does this game raise?

  40. salparadisenyc

    Midwest

    LOL
The bible belt was not in reference to you mate… more the section of this space whom believe. When reality is lost.

  41. gazzap

Mert and Kozzer are OK when they are not asked to play a high line against pacey strikers. Sagna and sometimes Monreal were way up the pitch at 1-0 and 2-0 down. Mert and Koz were badly exposed.
Sure Mert has zero pace but he can read the game. But reading the game is no use to you when a fast striker runs past you. Tactics went out the window today, and I think it was to do with the positioning of the midfield and where the full backs went.

  43. Danish Gooner

When Maureen gets his coveted 30 goals a season man,it will be like a nuclear Winter,he will cakewalk the English Pl like only Fergie could do and Chavski could easily be as dominant in this League as Munich are in the Bundesliga.

  44. leon

i sorry to say almost all arsenal players particually in the fisr half were playing like pussies they should be ashamed alot times its nbout skill and flair its about heart hunger and will to win and i did not see any of that today

  45. gazzap

RSPC if wenger had gone and spent £30m on one of the worlds top holding midfielders, I’d actually have been happier than getting say Draxler or Martinez.

Not how Mourinho sorts that part of the team out first and then gets the strikers later. He prioritised the most important thing that means you can keep it tight in the really big games and not get overun like we did today.

  46. Adam A. Carbarundum

Agreed @Gazzup…Mert can play it well, but he is prone to being exposed by better teams, as they focus on his weaknesses (slow afoot to be certain). Today Pool took it to him and he caved in a bad way, to the teams detriment.

  47. Danish Gooner

If you lot think Next season will be the business you can forget about it,this will probably be the easiest League title Maureen has ever won.Next season will be more of the same,Wenger will fail to sign a defensive midfielder because Abou will be back, yes we all know it will happen.

  48. Jamal

I honestly cant see us winning the next 3 games, the confidence has hit an all time low and the atmosphere will be deadly should we lose to Utd on wednesday night. Bad times ahead but most of us knew it would happen, only Wenger and his worshippers thought we were good enough to win the PL

  49. Bamford13

Not that Wenger won’t continue to play Arteta and Flamini — neither of whom are good enough — but if you had to play without them, what would you do? Today we might’ve played Ox and Jack together behind Ozil. Those two are young and mobile enough to do all that Arteta is supposed to do but can’t. When Ramsey returns, you could play him with Jack.

It’s not ideal, as what we need is a proper holding mid, but we’ve known that since last summer now, haven’t we?

    Wenger really must go.

You might be right of course.
I think in our world money is a sign of reward.
Maybe he does want fame/recognition to bolster his feeling of self-worth but the truth is he equates money with his worth. If it wasn’t that way he would have said “I don’t need/want a pay rise”, at least that’s how I see it.

I have never really thought Ozil was a good signing tbh.
He has a lot of assists but I’d have a few playing with the kind of players he has played with. So I think he is the type of player that reflects the ability of the rest of the team.
As part of a rebuild, great but as a one-off, not so good.
His reputation far exceeds his actual performance I’d say. A while ago I discussed this with NM and he indicated a statto blog claiming he has only one mistake during a game (I forget which). I watched the game back and from memory noted 7 unforced passing mistakes, 3 of which went directly to the opposition.

  51. Adam A. Carbarundum

Abou? That Girl? Yes, forgot that is the ace in the hole that Wenger plays every season. That is, until the young lass gets injured. Geez but my sister in law is more healthy than that stiff and she has serious health issues ( Hepatitis related heart and kidney failure problems).

Wenger play these players,he has bought them for crying out loud,it is his tactict that fails,no way are pool a brilliant team, for crying out loud they fielded Kolo,Skrtel,Aly and Flanagan in defense,on paper a very weak defense and we couldnt get around them, sad and unforgiveable, time for a new manager this one is cack.

  53. Jamal

Mourinho really is a clever bastard, he’s got Pellegrini and Wenger under his thumb. He’ll have a Fergie-like domination over the PL once he gets that world class striker.

I don’t Mertesacker ‘caved in’ to be honest.

There was a vacuum (like I and others predicted yesterday) in the middle. Arteta was too slow to get back and Wilshere was probably on the ground complaining somewhere.

So it meant Mertesacker had Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge or Coutinho coming straight at him – all of them have pace, but it was Sterling in particular the fastest of them all who really was instructed to get at him.

Sagna offered no help, I thought he was poor as well.

So, Sagna, Arteta and Wilshere basically hung Mertesacker out to dry . Was he ever going to be successful in the open against Sterling? Never .

  55. MidwestGun

Ok ill play what the hell.

    1. DId Wenger prepare/select the side properly for this game? Hell no
    2. Is this side good enough to compete for the title? Not so far
    3. Why were additional quality players not signed in the summer and January? Absolutely, no fucking clue.
    4. Is this side good enough to beat top sides? Not yet
    5. Why, from the start, has no one of note in the football world (besides Wenger) believed this side was good enough?
Actually, I dont care what others think.

  56. gazzap

Ox and Wilshere would have been just as bad probably. Without Flam we are in trouble. In reality we should be using Flamini in the holding role on his own all season. He got sent off at saints because of frustration caused by the disjointed midfield pairing with Arteta. He plays far better as a lone DM with technical players in front of him. And to think getting him was an afterthought from Wenger in the summer. That’s what makes me most scared about the summer – Wenger won’t even go and buy the DM we desperately need.

  57. Ines

Central midfield is the most important link in the team, it forms /or not solid ground for attack and is essential for solid defence against top teams.
It has to contain athletic, powerful, strong defensive midfielder and pacey box to box midfielder / playmaker good with the ball and able to contribute in the attack.
    We don’t have DM.

I think realistically we will finish fourth maybe fifth

Realistically that would be an achievement for a faded once great has been

Bit like when foreman went back in the ring an he should have carried on flogging glorified toasters

  61. gazzap

I heard a whisper that the man utd might be off because of next week’s tube strike. does anyone know if this is true?
Would you prefer Flamini to be back for the united league game or the liverpool cup game?
I think I want to stay in the cup the most. and i’d take 3rd spot. the harsh reality is that we aren’t the best or second best team in this league. 3rd spot would do me as long as wenger invests well in the summer.

  62. Jake

Adam’s a new one. It’s always interesting to see that new people arrive when we lose, not so much when we’re top of the league for months in a row. Only when we lose.

Yeah that’s probably good news but I am seriously worried about the united game. In some ways losing today might mean wenger will actually go for it against united. we’ll see.

I’ve been reading this blog for about 4 years now. But this is the fist time commenting. (I’m a bit lazy when it comes to emails and texting) Today I feel this is one humiliation to many. Maybe if I thought things were going to change I would feel differently. But after this latest frustratingly disappointing transfer window disgrace ( which I feel effected the teams moral the same it has the fans)
How anybody can defend Wenger??? Imo this latest window he had the chance to kick on and give the whole club including us fans a real lift but again chooses to deflate everyone because of his stubborn outdated principles. Time for change. Wenger has taken the joy out of being a gooner, it is now painful and disappointing every season and things will never change under his dictatorship. I think the man is a weak coward and fears change and is scare to upset certain players by rotating them or resting/dropping them when needed. Being a football fan will always have more pain than joy because you can’t win everything. But what is happen at AFC feels like we are destined to fail for ever!!!

  69. Cesc Appeal

This has been coming for weeks, we have been poor for a while now, scraping through matches against much lesser opposition.

  70. Thomas, it's up for grabs now..

I don’t know what’s worse, watching us get dismantled by Liverpool — or by City, Bayern, United — or listening to these twats make apologies for it.
    ———————————————

Sorry readers: long post !! Bamford called me out ! 😉

    Bamford13.
At no point did I make apologies for us being dismantled! It was a shite performance. Szcz, Wilshere and Ozil have already taken to twitter and apologised and said it was not good enough. And we have yet to be ‘dismantled’ by Bayern. Not that I’m filled full of confidence for that one also.

But when you are sitting second with a 1 point gap with 13 games to go.. All is not hopeless. I think I mentioned perspective and I am happy we have improved. Not happy though that this is our final position. I still expect more..

We’ve been out of the race in recent years in Nov/Dec. This year we are still there if you take a long hard look at the table. Maureen has been talking complete and utter shite with his fucking small horse crap. They have spent 100m this season on players. Recouping some of that by selling Mata. We have spent a net 30m. (When we could and SHOULD have spent more)

If you’ve been around this blog long enough you will have seen I’ve taken Wenger to task for his lack of spending and stubbornness over a long period. I don’t believe the bullshit about money only being available now.

I’ve read all the accounts and ‘money’ has been available since 2007 when we had 73m in the bank and PHW said money was available to AW but he choose not to spend it! (Believing his team was good enough). If that was not true we have a board of liars.

The irony of us finishing a close 2nd or 3rd will be lost on true diehard Wenger fans. When we could have done more with 1-2 good signings. This is worse IMO than finishing 18 points behind when looking at wads of cash in the bank.

Wenger will have failed if we end up 4-5 points off the pace for the sake of a top striker last summer. He was never going to get one in Jan.

However, as a club we have moved forward and we are still in this race. It will take some exceptional performances in the coming weeks to do it.

    Low expectations you said?…
This is what I expect: this year; to reach 84-85 points.. I think it will be won with around 87. Right now this is the max points anyone can get:

    Chelsea 95
    Arsenal 94
    City 93

We are still not in this race? Even as rank outsiders at 7-1? It might well be over for us in a few weeks but right now it is not.

This means we really have to get results against Utd, City and Chelsea. (And spuds) Not completely out of the question. The one I worry most about there is away to the Chavs. City have now gone 2 games without scoring. We can, if on form, give them a game at our place.

Next season I expect us to really challenge and make the summer signings to do it. It is clear we need to add.

There’s no low expectations there or ‘apologists’. But if you cannot see that we are finally on the move after a shite period then you need to rethink.

Man Utd won the title in 2011 with 80 points. (We had 68).

I don’t think you’ll find a Utd fan saying they were utter fucking shite that year. We are well on course to go over the 80.

All-in-all this means we are getting close. So while I do not think everything is rosy in the garden I can also see that with some good tending and a bit of weeding the garden can look in good shape. Maybe even good enough for an award at the Chelsea flower show!

Results like today remind everyone (including Wenger) that we are short. Apparently he rejected Liverpools offer of Suarez for 40m PLUS Walcott. Valuing Suarez at about 65m.. I think he should have bitten their hands off. Although I would not like to lose Theo.. I don’t want to lynch him for this single deal but he should have then gone elsewhere and made a big bid for a big (money) striker. He had all of August to do it.

He knows we need one. His bid for Ba signals that. I’ve no doubt he will hunt a big one in the coming summer. But this does not let him off the hook for last.

So yes.. I see positives in the future but am not running around in the forest naked singing there’s only one Arsene Wenger.

And see.. I managed to do all that without calling you a twunt!

It’s funny, the ‘usual suspects’ don’t appear to be on here tonight.

The only attack they’ll have is that we’re anti-Arsenal and wanted the team to lose to prove our point…we’ve been proving our point for the last 9 years.

Didn’t want the team to fail…just know it will.

    An suggest he retired

  74. andy1886

I think the ‘midgets’ thing is a real problem for us against better sides. When we have to wrestle control we just can’t seem to do it, we’re not strong enough. Liverpool brushed us aside today, no-one could stand up to them in midfield. It’s great when we have the ball, but we couldn’t get it or keep it today. Too many good footballers, too few real athletes. Technical ability is all well and good but this isn’t the 1880’s (after you old chum, no, no, after you!), you have to be prepared and able to fight for the right to play.

Arsene wont compromise, so he will not be winning anything again for Arsenal.

  75. Mark

    Squad = small
    Arteta = slow
    Wilshere = overrated
    Flamini = liability
    Giroud = not good enough
    Podolski = lazy
    Diaby = horizontal
    Bank balance = healthy
    Wenger = still here
    AKBs = guilty

  76. Keyser

Thomas – Thank You, best post for about 6 months, don’t agree with all of it, hell, if I did, you’d have people saying you were an AKB.

  78. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

But there is an old saying

    You can’t polish turd!

An that’s what we are with wenger at the helm

U say one point behind ?
It may well be 30 we won’t end up in top 3

  79. Roaaary

Why do we keep getting caught out by the big teams?

Why do we play relatively defensively most weeks then go gung-ho against the top sides??? It’s fucking boring to watch

  80. SpanishDave

Our fixture list is great because it will expose Wenger the board and all, it will show them where we really stand.
We are not a top side, Wenger has lost it, and its time for change.
    Bring it on.

He had a black eye against Palace I thought, hardly noticeable but right in the corner of his eye, looked like a little knick I thought.

  82. Bamford13

Fair enough, Thomas. Apologies for referring to you as a twat. I see you are a reasonable sort.

I still think you suffer from low expectations and I disagree with your assessment on certain points. For example, Ba was a sign of nothing other than Wenger looking for a back-up to Giroud, which means he’s as clueless as ever. We don’t need a better #2 striker, we need a better #1. Giroud is barely good enough to be a #3.

  83. Keyser

“Arsenal also said that the clash with Sanogo had taken place some time ago with Mertesacker having stated in an interview yesterday that he sustained the black eye he sported during the game after being elbowed accidentally by Wojciech Szczesny in training. ”

Fuck it, Ming the Merciless media lockdown time.

  84. andy1886

WTF is that with Sanogo? Having achieved fuck all so far in the game he’s now causing trouble in the camp? Mert is a real trier whatever else you think, an international with 95 caps, a professional. Who the fuck is this cheeky little nobody that only Arsene would give the time of day?
