Do Arsenal need top quality?

by .

How’s it going!

No soccer ball this weekend. I know you’re itching for it, but look, fan fatigue can end in tears. So what I’m saying is this. Relax, stop powering that F5 key, leave the newsfeeds alone and take a day of chatting Arsenal. A touch of respite will take you out of the ‘transfer panic zone’…

Well, Arsene Wenger’s comments might put you in that zone. He’s doing that old man moaning thing… this time venting about the transfer window being an irritant and unwelcome. How a man who has serious gaps in his squad can say such a thing is beyond me. This window isn’t an irritant, it’s an opportunity to shoot for the stars and make some serious noises about the title.

We need a striker. A Theo. And a right back. We can look internally, but as we’ve seen so far this season, numbers are the issue because we’re overusing players. We’ve obviously meandered the season spectacularly well so far, but we’re almost never in the mix come April.

The Morata story is getting boring already. One minute Madrid want to keep him. Then they want to loan him. Then they want a bigger fee. Now, the latest is Benfica want to buy him for £7m. A very low price for a kid who banged in 15 goals last season. Surely we should look at him as an acquisition if we think he’s worth while? Having 3 strikers isn’t a problem over a season. United manage it…

Wayne Veysey has gone to town on transfer targets. The man takes a hammering online for his info, but I can tell you, though sometimes wrong (shock horror, someone isn’t 100% right all the time), the bulk of what he says is good info. Anyway, he reckons we’re looking at Draxler this window… money talks, but will moving when he’s one of Europe’s form players be a consideration in World Cup year? Doubtful…

He also talks about Llorente, Lavezzi and Morata if nothing comes off elsewhere.

For me, our best bet will be an out of favour player looking to break into a World Cup squad. We need hunger more than anything. I’d love us to nail a perm player, but not at the expense of quality. That said, I do think we get a touch hung up on perceived quality. Flamini, a player huge swathes of the fanbase slammed for being average when he left us, has been a revelation. Why? Because he works hard, embodies the passion we all love and he performs a functional role.

As I’ve said many times over the years, you don’t always need to sign technically perfect wizards of the game… you need a few Flamini / Grimandi / Parlour type figures in the mixer. Now, that probably won’t work with forwards, but it could work elsewhere.

Sorry to keep this short, but I’m penning this on an iPhone because all my computers are ruined!

Have a great day!

Mate, if you post a comment like that expect a debate.

I did not rant. I merely stated that your cynical comment is what is wrong in this greedy world. I stand by that comment. Feel free to discuss why you think footballers are like you and would only play in a World Cup for the money. I think that is an obscene statement and a million miles from the truth.

Brilliant comment. Unfortunately, some people look to find things to level at Wenger. The armchair experts think you just turn up with a suitcase and can buy anyone. To be honest, some if the names that get mentioned are ridiculous and brains aren’t being engaged.

NorfolkIf you don’t get why playing in the World Cup is a big deal, I’m afraid little can be done for you. But I also suspect that means you’re not a football fan so much as a fan of Arsenal and of English football. That’s quite different.Anyone who is a fan of this beautiful game, who watches every World Cup, every European Championship, who knows the history of the game, the greats, Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Maradona, Ronaldo, Zidane, would never in a million years question the value of the World Cup.And certainly no real footballer ever would. The WC is a massive and unique setting for a player because he is playing:
    – for his country rather than a club
    – in front of all of the world’s 6 billion people
    – in the setting where Pele and Maradona proved their greatness.”

Everything you have just said above is only your opinion though. Are you saying if I don’t agree I’m not a real person, I assure you I am and further more I am no more or less than you.

Fair to say I’m an Arsenal supporter first and last. In fact I discovered I can’t support England if the team contains say Spurs players or other players who disgust me during the season for various reasons.

Could you cheer and clap Teddy Sheringham ?

I wasn’t calling you stupid, but I was calling the idea you expressed stupid. I didn’t mean any offense, but to say that one doesn’t “get” the appeal of the WC, that’s simply too much — and again, has nothing to do with the thinking of the world’s best footballers, all of whom prize the World Cup.

.But if Draxler is confident he’s going to the WC if he continues as he is, why risk it for 5 months? He’s very young, he’s still earning enough money to have a great life, he can move in the summer without risking anything
    —————————–
Maybe because he believes he might be able to Win the English league, or maybe further develop his game under wenger, or get a starting position for germany by playing for a bigger club like Arsenal and forming a partnership with ozil/podolski

Norfolk, it’s a tough one. Let’s just say my ideal would be if England thrashed Brazil in the WC Final and Rooney spontaneously combusted at the final whistle. A perfect day.

  7. Marc

Bamford – I’m not that into International football, strangely I usually start to enjoy the World Cup once England are out!

On a serious note we have to get 12 points out of our next 4 games, during this period Chelsea / Man City have some tough games.

  8. goonpharm2

The World Cup is the best tournament in world football. For me it’s bigger than any other competition in football. I for one have watched every World Cup since Italia 90 and USA ’94 being my favourite.

Watching players like Romario, Maradona, Baggio et al shining on the world stage is something else. The quality of football isn’t as good as say the Champions league but there’s something untainted and pure about the World Cup.

    I fucking loves it!

  9. SUGA3

I really, really wish the clubs stick two fingers up to FIFA in reaction to that WC nonsense and form a tearaway federation, international football serves no one but the corrupt national FAs who never take any responsibility whatsoever for the players injuries, etc.

Agree with both of you & some of the names you hear people go nuts about…. its like, ffs, we could have had Defoe…. ffs we could have had Erkisen…. remember when Utd nicked Zaha, people were up in arms, same when people called for Cahill.

Yes, some of these players are good, none excellent, we’ve dodged some right bullets.

There have been a couple we have missed, Hazard, Mata, poss Higuain (bit of a stretch) that may have improved the squad but watering the squad down with average players achieves nothing other than an inflated wage bill.

You can ask Mark Hughes’s former employers @ City about that.

  12. Augustine

It took a vicious fan backlash after losing at home to Villa on opening day for Wenger to buy Ozil

I doubt whether a clear plan for any transfer window exists in Wengers mind..the guy just wings it.

    Draxler to AFC.

Perhaps Draxler wants to develop under Wenger. For all Wengers faults he does know how to develop a player. The way he’s groomed Anelka, Henry and RvP from newbies into elite strikers may be an attraction for Draxler.

Personally I don’t give a shit. Just sign da ting and get him in!

Nice to know that you were moved by my post. Turns out we agree on something, namely, how beautiful this game is.

Here’s to Arsenal giving us some beautiful moments in the future.

  16. goonpharm2

Bamford – your post re: beautiful AFC moments got me thinking of my favourite AFC moment.

For me it’s hands down when we lifted the PL title 2002 and BobbyP came out on crutches and the entire squad got on their knees and started the “we’re not worth” pose. Bloody fantastic.

Genuinely made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

    #pureclass2002

  17. Dissenter

Tony Pulis has been brilliant in my book. The way he’s had this Palace team playing with no additions has been out of this world. They are playing spuds out of the park so far. City struggled to beat them in an open game. It’s astonishing.
Charmack looks like Giroud Mark-2 currently.

  18. Cesc Appeal

Hoping all the noise around us signing someone big, whether Draxler, Costa or Martinez at least means we are shopping in that market.

A guy like Draxler coming in (more achievable I think) whilst not necessarily what we need is definitely a future superstar and the morale boost would be huge.

  19. MarbleHall

That’s the problem with Arsenal they can’t create a buffer between themselves and their nearest rivals because time and again they fail to beat them.

If we had beaten either Everton, Chelsea or Man City we’d have had a healthy 4 or 5 point lead now regardless of Chelsea winning today.

  20. TooMuchCesc

    Barton

    Exactly right.

A random collection of players does not make an effective team. Wenger does look for special players that will fit into his system. Ozil is such a player. The Villa debacle didn’t result in Ozil however it probably did push him to pay more than he would have done otherwise.

It’s clear he wanted Suarez and it’s clear he now wants Costa. All the other striker targets are smokescreen. He wants Draxler because he is a special talent and will fit with the system. He may also be looking for another CB but I don’t think he is looking for anyone else.

I believe that his team building in the past few years was undermined by the departures of Cesc, RVP, and Nasri. Lack of funds probably didn’t help either. It led to a disjointed team where new recruits have needed time to gel. And of course he got some decisions wrong. Who doesn’t, but let’s look at the recent recruits in the D as an example:

Per – “turns slower than a cruise ship” has turned out to be a solid undroppable CB.
Kos – “bargain bin from the French league” has established himself as a top CB.
Monreal – “who?” is a reliable LB who is capable of being backup without moaning.
Szesz – “crap GK” has become one of the best in the PL.
The result is a cohesive and solid back five. A random collection of star players would not have achieved this. Look at ManCity.

Wenger doesn’t play Fantasy Football. He plays Reality Football which is based on building a cohesive team style of play, team spirit and togetherness, and most importantly, on affordability. We will see the results if he can keep the group together and add the special 2 or 3 recruits. We are already seeing the results in quality of play and maybe we’ll even see a trophy this season.

  21. Jake

“an European trophy”. the word “a” is substituted by “an” not because the next word begins with a vowel but because it begins with a vowel sound when spoken. Say “an European” and say “a European”. The one that is easier is the correct grammar, just like when a word starts with “h”.

  22. Simon

    Hope it becomes a pattern.

    Have we bought Draxler yet?

Heard we might be after a goalkeeper… That two might leave.

  23. Cesc Appeal

    Simon

    Maybe.

I think it’s bizarre that Wenger is now using both Bendtner and Podolski as reasons not to buy.

Clearly has not trusted Bendtner ALL season, tried to sell him ALL summer.

Didn’t trust Podolski to lead the line at Spurs and fought against it last year until there was no other choice.

But now it’s January, suddenly they’ve gone up in skill in his eyes? Amazing.

  24. WengerEagle

Can’t believe there are football fans that don’t rate the World Cup if I’m honest, for me it’s the pinnacle of football greatness to own a world cup like the likes of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Romario, Ronaldo/Rivaldo, Zidane and Iniesta have done. Agree with the poster that said the quality of football isn’t quite up there with the UCL but there is something very special about the World Cup. Perhaps it’s down to the fact it only occurs once every 4 years and there is greater pressure to perform for the top players than say in the UCL which is on every year.

My favourite ever World Cup has to be the 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea. Watching that amazing Brazil side at the age of 8 with Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho as a front 3 are some of my best memories of the sport.

As Ireland didn’t even qualify for Brazil I’d love to see Argentina win it with Messi being the star of the show to cement his place as the best footballer to ever grace the sport

  25. Johnty79

Wengers done it again. Maki wells is another bargain player we missed. Heis blaitently another player who will go for 10m plus in a couple years time.

Remy…..the most obvious signing in history and wenger doesn’t sign him!

  26. andy1886

Marble, add to your list the 1987 League Cup. Maybe a surprise to younger Gooners because the LC means sweet F.A. these days, but it set us on our way. We deposed Liverpool (the real power of the time) and for the first time Ian Rush scored and the scousers lost! If we had lost I honestly think that ’89 would not have happened.

  27. Cesc Appeal

    Simon

It sounds like classic Wenger excuses though.

You can just hear it ‘you say all we have is Giroud,. but also we have Bendtner and Podolski who can play there, also Sanogo…that’s 4 players in a ‘weak’ area’

Problem is, all of them aren’t good enough, Sanogo is laughable when his name comes up, Podolski just can’t do it there, Bendtner he tried to sell, Giroud is slightly above average.

    Johnty

Good win for your lot today, every win counts in that race for the coveted 5th place finish that brings the wonders of the Europa League and truly magical Thursday night outs for the fans away against the heavyweights of Sheriff Tiraspol and Troms. Why don’t you piss off now back to your cave and get back to using Chris Samba’s ass as a hand warmer

  29. Jake

You can tell someone is a troll when they say that Wenger was successful because of George Graham’s foundations. They entirely neglect that even if this were true, Wenger got more success out of the same players while changing the style entirely. Essentially they’re saying that Graham was better because with the same players he got less success.
Then they neglect that the majority of the players that Wenger won trophies with were bought by him, the entire first choice of the Invincibles and the FA Cup win in 05 were bought by Wenger or were from the academy. The majority of the team past the millennium mark were Wenger additions, this is undeniable and the ‘Graham foundations’ myth can be dismissed entirely.

  30. Thorough

Childish Gambino. Absolutely agree re Ruiz. A man machine like Rosicky, berated for his miserly goals return when he actually doesn’t get into position often. Jol must be blind.

You can tell someone is a troll when they say that Wenger was successful because of George Graham’s foundations

    So Jake

Why didn’t the genius carry one winning with the players he nurtured?

If you want to raise AW up to the level of great manager because of his winning things don’t you then have to demote him to shyte manager when he can’t win things.
I have said before and I think it stands up, he has been arguably both the best and the worst manager the club has had.

  32. Childish Gambino

    @Jake

saying ” an European” is wrong because the pronunciation of the “Eu” is “Yu”
    European – Yu-ro-pee-yan
    University- Yu-ni-ver-see-tee
In both cases you say “a” not “an”

  33. Nasri's Mouth

Toli83: Anyone else heard rumours of Eduardo return?

    Hahahahaa!!!

Sorry, not laughing at you, but there was a piece the other day about Eduardo. Apparently someone suggested we could use a player like Eduardo right now, then another site suggested we were looking at him, then another site said we might be signing him.

Someone put together the time line showing how the initial suggestion had turned into us actually looking at him, (we’re not).

So I was waiting to see who’d be the first on here to bite

  34. Nasri's Mouth

    @kwik fit

Goal.com used to be very unreliable. I think they’ve got a source inside the club now when it comes to injuries, as they get a fair bit right, but their transfer stuff isn’t great.

Still, Ben Fairthorne is a legend on twitter for managing to get much more wrong than right. Even with the law of averages he should have done better, so him suggesting that goal.com aren’t reliable is funny…

  36. MarbleHall

    Jake

You are missing the point what George Graham’s backline instilled in to the flair players was a winning mentality and a reminder of what is expected from players when playing for a club like Arsenal. This rubbed off on players like Vieira, Ljungberg, Pires and Henry and was integral to the success of the invincible team as they passed it on to new players coming through.

  37. kwik fit

Romford Pele was saying y’day that the squad is not short on numbers.
In terms of target men, I don’t think AW will sign another bcuz of the presence of Giroud and Bendtner.

I really don’t know if he is protecting Giroud or does not fancy spending or sees what he likes in this window.

He is a fan of hybrid forwards who are all technically sound rather than a Falcao type.
To be honest, I don’t really know if AW would sign Diego Costa if he were fully on the market.

  40. arsenal-flavour

    nasri mouth

Not really. Seeing as his had next to no game time, hard to score when your not playing? As for Solshito scored 1 goal in open play….

Defoe has scored when he has been played… hence the numerous goals his scored in europe.

Ps you have a really arrogant tone. Whenever you reply to someone its always with a gotcha I’m right comment, just tone it down abit mate this isn’t a competition.

  41. Cesc Appeal

Bendtner was the reason not to spend last week.

This week it’s Podolski is it Wenger?

If he doesn’t do something to adequately address the situation in January he’s blown our title chances…however slim they are with a marauding City side chasing us.

  42. kwik fit

    Dream10

We are short up top. Giroud and Bendy are similar types and offer no flexibility. If we are serious about winning this thing Wenger must sign a forward. I like what i’ve seen of Morata. Fast and hungry . Just what we need.

This Shelvey bloke is pretty good.

Funny because he strikes me as a bit of a liability early doors but he has settled down a bit as the game has gone on. He doesn’t pick up that many cards and he’s not scared of getting involved which is suprising.

  44. hackneylad

WE NEED TO BUY COLEMAN!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

He will effectively kill of jenks career I know. But his so good, great defensively and especially offensively just what we need for our adventurous right back role. His also a great athlete.

  45. tunnygriffboy

If Wenger was happy with Bendtner and Podolski then we wouldn’t be looking for players this window, or in summer gone. Both of these players will go next summer when upgrades will be brought in.

Apparently we’ve been talking to Kouyate ( forgive spelling ) a young CB playing in Belgium and also Carvallho a 21 yr old DCM from Sporting Lisbon. If this is the case then Wenger is identifying where we need to strengthen. Whether that is now or in the summer remains to be seen.

  46. luke

As much as I’d like Coleman, another Rb won’t help us win the title. IMO the reason we aren’t conceding ATM is that the understanding of our back 4 is so good albeit the team as a whole defends much better. Surely we need a cf, cb and maybe a winger no?

  47. Nasri's Mouth

What makes Le grove so interesting is the housewives I mean moaners

Not even one positive post about arsenal today, everyone throwing handbags and causing dram why there isn’t any shopping.
Some will even settle with a Madrid under 21 striker, If we sign him I doubt he’s gonna get any game. but moaners just want to see arsene sign someone,

  49. sam

Nothing against Morata But He will be wise if he stays with Ancelotti at least he’s getting games.
Arsenal team selection is the dodgiest I have ever seen

  50. hackneylad

Changed my mind on draxler, think we should buy him now and think we could.

We are going to miss plenty of goals with walcott out and with giroud as are cf, don’t think ox and gnarby will make amends for that, and to presume ramsey will hit goal scoring form like before is very unlikely as that would make him a 20 goal a season midfielder.

Draxler doesn’t necessarily mean the death of ox or gnarby, as gnarby is young so he can wait around till santi is 30 then find his place

, Walcott can either stay on wing and draxler take CF spot in future or vice versa,

OX can be part of the squad rotated and played on either wing just as draxler can be

with the right nuanced rotation draxler can work.

  51. Nasri's Mouth

    @Arsenal-flavour

He scored one goal in over 1200 minutes of play in the PL in 2013. That’s over 13 full games. And not a single assist in that time either.

And funny you mention his goals in the Europa League against a bunch of postmen from Kosovo. Because Solshito as you call him, actually has a better goal/min ratio than he does.

Ok you hostile over aggressive twonker in 2012 he scored 11 goals despite being benched for most of the season that’s the same amount of goals as tevez and more than Giroud who had more game time. confidence does have an effect on a strikers performance thus you have 2013..

  55. hackneylad

    Nasri Mouth

Might be!! but its worth a try as it shows we value him as a player and maybe makes the idea of playing for arsenal as a reality in his head set. If offer him huge wages and insert a clause in his contract offering him serious game time, might work… might not.

  56. Nasri's Mouth

    @arsenal-flavour

Here’s a suggestion, stop trying to defend Defoe, and I’ll stop being ‘hostile’ to you. There’s a reason why no decent team was in for him, and that’s because he’s not a very good player anymore. He’s 31 now, and the goals have dried up and as he never contributes much to team play there’s no other reason to sign him.

  62. Gambon

No signings yet? LeSenile out!! This man must be losing it. Your chance to win the league but you still insist on playing Giroud as your first choice striker? He should fuck off to France with his overpaid mugs Diaby, Giroud and Sanogo!

Yes George Graham had a couple of tough years as well as great years. Wenger had 8 great years and 9 tough years. So its ok to slag of George, yet when someone criticises Wenger your quick to jump to his defence. I’m grateful for what George Graham bought to the club and that was success. Just like I’m grateful for what Wenger used to bring to the club. But if we go trophy less this season, I think he should go. And you? How much longer you willing to give Wenger?

I could go on and say George Graham is a more complete manager than Wenger because he has won four different trophies to Wenger’s two.

Jackson Martinez: “I always cheered for Arsenal when I was a kid – I love their style of play.My favourite player was Eddie Mc Goldrick who i’ve based my game on. In fact my bedroom has been turned into an Eddie Mc Goldrick shrine. the ladies particularly find this is a great turn on when I take them back to my bedroom”

Eh? You are such easy pickings!

    Arsene has won 11 trophies.

    What are you talking about?

Don’t answer you’ll only embarrass yourself.

    @Thankyou and Goodnight

I was just pulling MarbleHall’s leg as he’s been trolling.

Graham was a great manager for us, though he clearly lost the plot towards the end, but the idea that Wenger’s success was down to Graham is bollocks, quite frankly. The side he inherited might have had a winning mentality, but they’d hidden it bloody well.

Wenger needs to do 2 things to justify his job

    1) If he doesn’t win anything this season, then we need to finish 2nd/3rd in the league, and still be in contention with 2/3 games to go.

    2) Do a proper job in the summer

Simon you silly billy Wenger has won 7 trophies; 3 Premier leagues and 4 FA Cups.

Graham won 6 trophies; 2 League titles, 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups and 1 Cup Winners Cup.

Charity Shield or Community Shield games are not competitive but are friendlies.
