Do Arsenal need top quality?

by .

How’s it going!

No soccer ball this weekend. I know you’re itching for it, but look, fan fatigue can end in tears. So what I’m saying is this. Relax, stop powering that F5 key, leave the newsfeeds alone and take a day of chatting Arsenal. A touch of respite will take you out of the ‘transfer panic zone’…

Well, Arsene Wenger’s comments might put you in that zone. He’s doing that old man moaning thing… this time venting about the transfer window being an irritant and unwelcome. How a man who has serious gaps in his squad can say such a thing is beyond me. This window isn’t an irritant, it’s an opportunity to shoot for the stars and make some serious noises about the title.

We need a striker. A Theo. And a right back. We can look internally, but as we’ve seen so far this season, numbers are the issue because we’re overusing players. We’ve obviously meandered the season spectacularly well so far, but we’re almost never in the mix come April.

The Morata story is getting boring already. One minute Madrid want to keep him. Then they want to loan him. Then they want a bigger fee. Now, the latest is Benfica want to buy him for £7m. A very low price for a kid who banged in 15 goals last season. Surely we should look at him as an acquisition if we think he’s worth while? Having 3 strikers isn’t a problem over a season. United manage it…

Wayne Veysey has gone to town on transfer targets. The man takes a hammering online for his info, but I can tell you, though sometimes wrong (shock horror, someone isn’t 100% right all the time), the bulk of what he says is good info. Anyway, he reckons we’re looking at Draxler this window… money talks, but will moving when he’s one of Europe’s form players be a consideration in World Cup year? Doubtful…

He also talks about Llorente, Lavezzi and Morata if nothing comes off elsewhere.

For me, our best bet will be an out of favour player looking to break into a World Cup squad. We need hunger more than anything. I’d love us to nail a perm player, but not at the expense of quality. That said, I do think we get a touch hung up on perceived quality. Flamini, a player huge swathes of the fanbase slammed for being average when he left us, has been a revelation. Why? Because he works hard, embodies the passion we all love and he performs a functional role.

As I’ve said many times over the years, you don’t always need to sign technically perfect wizards of the game… you need a few Flamini / Grimandi / Parlour type figures in the mixer. Now, that probably won’t work with forwards, but it could work elsewhere.

Sorry to keep this short, but I’m penning this on an iPhone because all my computers are ruined!

Have a great day!

Draxler in this window?? Crazier things have happened.
Would love it if true….Draxler and a CB in Jan and Costa and Bender in july B-)

If Wenger sits on his thumbs this month when it’s obvious we need reinforcements, the season is over all ready. We’ll be fighting and clawing just to stay in the top four by seasons end. This shouldn’t be good enough. We would have a real shot at the title if our manager had one shred of ambition to win something.

  3. Simon

Love the confusion about Wenger. You really need to be bi-polar to simultaneously say ‘we have a shot at the title’ and ‘Wenger is trying to fuck it up’ – nurse!

  4. chocc

Am I the only one who thinks the “flamini effect” is just overrated … He shows a lot of enthusiasm but all he does is yell and point fingers everywhere.. Kind of like the poor man’s xabi alonso

Wenger ruining are season? Because of him and the players we are top of the table…. you plebs lol!

Wenger is the ultimate troll in the press conference asking about berbatov his like its cool guys we got sanago coming back…

    HAHAHA Trolling reporters!

  6. Thank you and goodnight

I know that that Defoe plays for spuds but I think he would of done a job for us till summer window. More of a natural finisher than those we have at the club even if he is a prat. I’m not an AKB but have to agree with Wenger when he says trying to buy the WC striker we need in January is a big ask as most of them still in CO with their current teams. Yes I know he should of sorted this out in the summer but that ship has sailed now.

    Hello.

  8. jasongms

Arsene should just drop the charade …. every man and his dog knows what players we need and what positions we need to fill . He should stop fucking around trying to out wit the press and concentrate on bringing players in .

Sick of his surreptitious little winks !

  9. Bero

Chocc – you may not be the only one, but I don’t agree. His positional play is good and he’s willing to nip at heals and play a bit dirty when needed… Something every top midfield usually has someone to do. Flamini has been an excellent short term addition to the squad. We need a younger version of him in the summer or max in summer 2015…max!

Would love to see the club spend big on draxler this window… Would show ozil wasn’t a one off and our spending regime really is different… Doubtful though. I still don’t believe Wenger has changed that much.

As I always say, happy to be proved wrong.

Martinez still the striking option for me. Again probably not going to happen.

  10. Uche

    @Chocc
Totally agree with you about Flamini. Been saying git since day 1.

About Draxler, I think he’s a good option in this window simply because Theo’s out. I see Draxler developing into a striker who can also play on the wings. Short term, he can fill in for Theo. Mid term he’s back/rotation for Giroud, long term he’s our main striker. His flexibility would mean that he wouldn’t stifle The Ox, or Gnabry. His youth allows him to fit into a rotation role seamlessly.

Ticks all the boxes for me. But he would have to be the last German we sign though.

  11. Nasri's Mouth

Thankyou and goodnight: I know that that Defoe plays for spuds but I think he would of done a job for us till summer window

    errrr… no

  12. Charlie Boy

Flamini is not overrated – he’s been an excellent acquisition and has helped Arsenal in no small way, to the position they currently sit in the league.

Apart from his tremendous work ethic, he’s also brought leadership, guile and aggression to the team – something they were lacking before he arrived.

Arsenal players are no longer the pushovers they once were, something attributable to Mathieu Flamini.

    Bonne journée!

  13. Barton

jasongms, Take your foil hat off mate, the government don’t read your thoughts on a weekend…..

TYAG Defoe, a player that can’t displace a out of form Soldado or a mentaly unstable Ade? You do realise were top of the league don’t you?

  14. tunnygriffboy

No Draxler this window. I think Wenger will look to buy supa qualidee in the summer, possibly Draxler and CF, and young CDM.

Problem is he very frugal and doesn’t want to buy anyone too expensive to use up funds he was going to use in the summer. Walcott’s injury has really thrown spanner into works. Gnabry is quality but can’t expect him to play every game due to his age. Ox will take a while to get back to match fitness and may pick up niggles as a result.

Walcott was a forward option as well. His recovery may take 9 months, its a possibility hence we being linked with widemen.

  15. Charlie Boy

    @Simon

Regarding Draxler – I have a feeling you may be on to something there. Why else would he visit Arsenal’s training ground now, if he weren’t joining us soon?

Can’t see why he wouldn’t wait until Summer if he wasn’t coming in January.

“Look into the eyes, not around the eyes – 3, 2, 1 and back in the room.”

  16. Nasri's Mouth

Charlie Boy: Why else would he visit Arsenal’s training ground now, if he weren’t joining us soon?

I think a lot of the German players did when they were over here

  17. Arsene's Nurse

I no longer worry my pretty head about signings. You know what we need, I know what we need, but speculating about what Wenger will do is pointless.

We picked up Monreal this time last year after his signing was brought forward. He’s been a great buy. It would be nice to think we might get a nice surprise.

I always liken Arsenal transfer windows to visiting your granny as a kid; she might have a nice spread of tea and cake ready, she might even give you a bit of cash, then again you may have to kiss her cheek – the one with the hairy mole.

  18. hackneylad

To be fair in Defoe’s defence his been a far better player than soldaldo,

pretty much every time his been given game time his played well.

His always going to be a regular scorer of goals.

Last season at the start of season for the spuds G Bale was out and defoe stepped up had a very good scoring streak game after game after game and then got injured for a only a couple of weeks and AVB refused to play him after that, spuds fans were livid at the time… I was unfortunately dating a spuds girl at the time hence I know so much.

Not saying his great but his always been a good striker.

  19. Barton

Charlie Boy, think the Draxler @ training ground was creative journalism mate 😉 Didn’t he visit with the whole German team before the press got rolling with the Draxler to Arsenal story.

We would be getting fecked for tapping up if not.

  20. Bade

We just better sign some player or two this window

Things looking worrying at the moment

We’re surviving at the moment, but we won’t last without another few bodies

Not that I don’t care about quality but if we don’t find the top quality we can just settle for a make-do signing

  21. Simon

He plays for shake who have bought a replacement already and are currently 7th in the bundesliga (by the way my auto-correct spells that nude slugs) and 16 points off the paste – so no champions league. C’mon Julian, come on practice with your World Cup team in London!

    So more dead wood?

I’m firmly in the ‘if its not quality then no thank you’ camp. We have had enough shite over the years @ our club, no need to be adding more.

@hakney, I don’t disagree that Defoe over the years has been a fantastic player although I think he’s the typical ‘little man’ in a 2 man strike partnership, doesn’t fit with modern prem football and certainly not Arsenal’s football.

Wenger isn’t just trolling the reporters – Arsenal supporters around the globe want to hear what he has planned this window. Trolling your own supporters doesn’t sound quite so funny does it, then again Wenger doesn’t give a flying f*ck what the supporters think. A bit more honesty would be a good thing, he’s not half as clever as he thinks he is.

yes but defoe would have had something to prove. To rub AVB and sherwoods nose in it to show how good he is. Plus he’s playing for a world cup
place as well. Its a shame as I think he would of scored us goals if given a chance. Still think he’s a twat though. That young real madrid player looks good but as a stop gap how long would it take him to bed in?? With 4 months left, time is something a newbie has little of.

People have to stop doing this whole why would he move in a World Cup year nonsense. Like moving to Arsenal and contending for a championship will diminish his chances of going to the World Cup with Germany. Word is he’s been out of form for a bit so maybe a change mid season would help Draxler. Or in Griezmann’s case a move from Sociedad to Arsenal might just be what gets him his spot on the French squad.

I’d certainly like to think we’re capable of a surprise or 2 this window considering it could be what’s gets us over the line this season.

I’m not sure you are correct (to a degree).

Nobody would expect him to name names but if he wasn’t going to buy I’d prefer him to simply say it. I might then believe the other side of the coin when he says “we are looking for a special player”. I think he owes us more of an explanation.

I’m shocked some people think flamini is overrated! In the same way that mertesackers experience controls the defence, flamini controls the defence and midfield.

His positioning is excellent and allows the ramseys and ozils to be creative going forward.

Plus he was a free acquisition on a low salary so hardly draining the clubs resources. I rate him over arteta personally

  39. N5

I do mate, I have a kindle so use the android store, but if you got to your app store and type in Adblock plus you should find a free download for whatever tablet you have.

  40. Barton

    @Simon, totally agree.

Seems a few Gooners are getting a bit hot under the collar about transfers but lets put it in perspective, Chelsea need a striker, Liverpool are one Suarez injury away from impolosion & United need a miracle yet people are saying were doomed if we don’t add some second rate lumps to our squad.

The only team that doesn’t need something are City and one or two players won’t reduce the quality gap to them much.

Fact is, we will (should) have summer ST targets, if one of those becomes available now then we should go for it (ala Monreal) if not, best a loan if poss or wait till summer.

  41. tunnygriffboy

No manager tells the world what his transfer plans are. It would be ridiculous.

Wenger has got his targets for the summer I think, hence a loan deal for Morata. Walcott’s injury has really put a spanner in the works.

  43. Barton

Norfolk, Wenger has given the same ‘explanation’ time and time again.

Only quality players, players that improve his squad, only top top quality, etc

    Its pretty clear really.

    Roaaary

I agree, when I first started watching football I used to think that if a goal was scored it was down to the GK. Then I realised that maybe the defence were partly to blame. Then I sat and watched a game with a professional footballer who pointed out that it was the fault of the whole team (quite often). If the striker doesn’t track back it puts the midfield under pressure and so on.
Note Dzeko made a couple of important blocks in the MC box late on in their last game.

So for me Flamini & Arteta are both vital to the protection of the back four.

  46. arsenal-flavour

    Agree with Marko

Hate that players wont move in a world cup year bollocks.

Especially when people were saying that about costa, as if Arsenal is a step down and as if he wouldn’t get game time… when giroud is his only competition.

If anything moving to a bigger team in a world cup year could help ones chances at you will move up in the coaches esteem and be recognized as a big club player.

  47. Roaaary

I don’t think we will sign anyone this winter. When wenger needs someone he gets them quickly ie Ozil, monreal, podolski.

When he starts the talking you can almost be sure we won’t do anything. Giroud has had a long break now and bendtner will be back soon.

  48. Revving Kevin

As it appears to be yet another day of giving Wenger a hard time, I will have a day off as its so boring. Great discussion this morning on our legends, so I am watching the finest team I have ever seen in 55 years, The Invincibles. Much more fun than moaning on a Saturday.

    True…………………but I can’t believe him.
He has spent so long “looking for a player of the right quality” without success that I’m forced to conclude that he’s either lying (and not looking) or has the worst scouts in the world.

  50. arsenal-flavour

If draxler moved to Arsenal and played half the games that he would for Schalke he would still be on course for the world cup squad,if anything it would help his chances.

It doesn’t matter the amount of games you play (as long as you do get some game time) but the team you play for.

Coaches have always preferred players from big clubs whatever there age and experience level.

I can understand this, I did start to feel a bit like that at one point, wanted AW gone at the start of the season (partly because I listened to what the press were saying) but recent results and signings have changed my mind somewhat.

    Look at our recent signings.

    Cazorla, Poldi, Monreal, Flam, Ozil

All have been good quality and have fitted our ‘budget’ at that time, as the budget has increased, so has the level of quality.

  53. Al

I Agree that this players not moving in World cup year is nonsense especially if they know they will play a significant amount of games for the new club and on top of that if you move to a big club the player would be playing on a bigger platform.

  54. Barton

Forgot to put Mert and Giroud to that list.

Giroud has been probably the least talented signing of recent times yet still came with a bit of pedigree for his value

  55. Norfolk

    Barton

“All have been good quality and have fitted our ‘budget’ at that time, as the budget has increased, so has the level of quality.”

Hmm, I thought he had £60/70m when we moved across but didn’t see him spend much. I guess only time will tell.
To me he could still be on top with happy fans if he was a little more honest. I think the lack of it reflects badly on what he thinks of us.

Same way I think that the government should have captured say BBC2 for an evening to explain the EU and or the financial collapse.
I feel disenfranchised by both outfits.

  56. tunnygriffboy

Re Draxler, probability he will move in summer but if he were to move he would be playing with better players which could showcase his talents more. Also its not as if he will be out of Loews sight as he will be watching Per, Ozil, Poldi and Gnabry pre world cup.

Barton, try a hammer instead, might knock some sense in there.
    Erm, yeh, thanks for that

Okay, a little harsh I accept.

Let’s be straight here though, if Wenger is half as intelligent as some seem to think he must be very well aware that this sort of drivell will wind up a fair number of good honest gooners who just want the best for the club. This doesn’t mean breaking the bank, buying Draxler, Reus et al every window, but that said mentioning Sanogo or going on about ‘mental strength’ all the time is just taking the p*ss.

As has been said, all we want is a little honesty for his 7.5m a year. That can be as simple as “we are looking at a couple of very good players but negotiations are at a delicate stage and I don’t want to say any more right now”

    How difficult is that?

  58. Nasri's Mouth

Moving home is a massive change. It’s always listed as one of the most stressful events in your life.

So moving home to another country entirely and changing job too and it’s not an easy thing to do.

World cups come around only every 4 years, I can fully understand why players are reticent about moving in January

Looked like Wenger doing a Scrooge all over again. However, Flamini has been very impressive. Evidently, the AC move was a match made in hell.

Back at Arsenal and he’s playing like he never left . Far from overrated, IMHO!

  61. Barton

Andy – if Wenger is half as intelligent as some seem to think he must be very well aware that this sort of drivell will wind up a fair number of good honest gooners who just want the best for the club

I’m sure he’s well aware but his number one job is to protect the squad and the clubs footballing interest.

An example of this is Mourinho defending ridiculous penalty decisions, he looks a total moron saying it and you know even he doesn’t believe it yet it helps galvanise his squad and will almost certainly influence ref decisions in the future so in the long run its worth doing even if some Chelsea fans feel utterly embarrassed by it.

    Nasri Mouth,

I agree moving home is difficult due to finding a home, then bringing those things over or finding them in your new place that give you home comfort. However, nowadays club really do help a lot in that department to make the move seamless such as helping the family settle ( recommending school etc).

Was reading in Steve Mcmanaman book that was not the case when he went to real Madrid and how he was just left to his own devices. Anyway after the struggle he overcame he actually advised the club on how to make it easier for foreign players which they did

I have a close friend who does exactly that at Man C, you would be amazed at the lengths the clubs go to settle players in and make it real easy for them.

  67. goonpharm2

Got a funny feeling we may nab Draxler this month. Wenger loves him and the kid has been professing his love for all things AFC.

Doubt him moving to us will affect his WC aspirations. Is he first choice for Das Germans?

Anyway just read that Vidic is out of contract in the summer. Wouldn’t him coming in as a squaddie. he definitely would come in handy for the tough trips oop north…. Per, Kozz, Verm and Vidic. Not to shabby at all. What ya think?

  68. Roaaary

@Al – I work in recruitment for a big pharma company and you wouldn’t believe the scrutiny they put on relocation so I’m sure footballers get even better treatment.

Relocating wouldn’t be an issue as a multi millionaire. The club show you areas and houses to live in. The places to eat etc and you instantly have a big group of people around you.

The worry for players moving in a World Cup year is more to do with different styles of football

  69. Nasri's Mouth

Norfolk:I have a close friend who does exactly that at Man C, you would be amazed at the lengths the clubs go to settle players in and make it real easy for them.

I’m sure they do, they’re aware of the effect it can have on the player.

But if Draxler is confident he’s going to the WC if he continues as he is, why risk it for 5 months? He’s very young, he’s still earning enough money to have a great life, he can move in the summer without risking anything

  70. andy1886

Barton, I respect that viewpoint but I cannot see how my suggested response would bring any harm to the squad or the club as a whole. In fact players generally are keen to play with better players. It really just smacks of playing games, Arsene needs to get back into adult and treat us more like adults too.

“But if Draxler is confident he’s going to the WC if he continues as he is, why risk it for 5 months? He’s very young, he’s still earning enough money to have a great life, he can move in the summer without risking anything”

    I don’t know.
Personally I would only play for my country or in the WC if I thought I could gain financially out of it. So maybe an attractive offer would be worth the risk of not going to Brazil.

  72. Nasri's Mouth

Norfolk: Personally I would only play for my country or in the WC if I thought I could gain financially out of it.

Really ? I suspect you’re in a pretty small minority then.

I’ve just seen my better(*) half’s annual package from her employers which has made me very happy indeed and someone like Draxler is taking home at least 10 times as much. He doesn’t need any cash from a WC

    Dear KC

Sarcastic knobs like you are what is wrong in here. You lecture us this morning for not ending our comments with the in my opinion bit, Bevis we were second guessing RVP. Yet you assume to know what Wenger is thinking? As for calling peoe passive aggressive, it’s self righteous crap as usual. Be even handed and don’t think you are above any other person. This is a blog for opinions, not disclaimers. If you spend every posting digging the club I will point that out. It works both ways this debating matey. And watch those huge doses if hypocrisy. Enjoy your Saturday whinging.

No, the problem is posters who seem to resort to insult rather than discussion.
In what way have I suggested that I know what AW is thinking ?

Make do signings don’t necessarily means we don’t sign someone of note in the summer

Fact is, as it stands we have less chance of winning the league with the current squad than with one more body or two. Even Barbatov would improve our chances

Anybody decent is better than no body in our current situation

Mind you from now on basically we’ll be playing every 3-4 days until May or so

Kevin, I don’t think N5 wants to be stuffed or mounted by you tbh. Not an image I recommend thinking about….

What is so great about it I wonder ? I seriously don’t get it.

“Personally I would only play for my country or in the WC if I thought I could gain financially out of it.”

Such a comment is not only deeply cynical, it has nothing in common with the thinking of the world’s best footballers, all of whom prize playing in the World Cup as highly as anything in their career.

To represent one’s country, to play against the best in the world, to compete in the setting where the greatest ever — Pele, Maradona — proved they were the best in the world … These are the things that live in the hearts of actual footballers.

Certain posters on here seem to think that footballers are pure mercenaries who play the game for no reason aside from the money. This is simply stupid. Footballers play first and foremost out of love and joy for the game. Anyone who has played this game at a high level — and who loves this game — knows this.

When a striker scores a great goal — like Hazard just did, for example — he celebrates not because he sees the zeroes in his next contract or bonus but because it is glorious to do so, because he has been playing and loving this game since he was five, because he wants as much glory in this game as he can get, because to play this game and do great things is a joy.

Do they think about making money as well? Of course. But money is not the end-all be-all for a footballer. Because achieving great things matters to him as well. If it doesn’t, he won’t be around long.

What? Are you being serious? Greatest honour for anyone is to represent their Country and play in a World Cup. I would do it for free!!

I don’t know what to say, except your comment is everything that is wrong in life today, this pure and utter greed. It’s all about the money.

Revving the twat! Defending Wenger as usual. Calling people names because they disagree with LeSenile. This has to be some sort of gay love. Do you have posters of LeSenile de Professeur?

No need to say people who see it different to you are stupid.

I don’t think you can generalize and assume everyone has the same motives.

Say in the case of someone like Draxler, you would think would be able to stay where he is and go to the WC, or risk his inclusion in the National team by making a move but earn a massive payday.
I guess you are saying he will of course do nothing that puts his WC in jeopardy.
Isn’t that exactly what say Beckham recently did ? I’m thinking I have heard that quite often as players leave these shores.

Draxler could probably earn more by waiting till the summer though.

The WC will raise his profile, and there’ll be a bidding war so higher salary…

If you don’t get why playing in the World Cup is a big deal, I’m afraid little can be done for you. But I also suspect that means you’re not a football fan so much as a fan of Arsenal and of English football. That’s quite different.

Anyone who is a fan of this beautiful game, who watches every World Cup, every European Championship, who knows the history of the game, the greats, Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Maradona, Ronaldo, Zidane, would never in a million years question the value of the World Cup.

And certainly no real footballer ever would.

The WC is a massive and unique setting for a player because he is playing:
    – for his country rather than a club
    – in front of all of the world’s 6 billion people
    – in the setting where Pele and Maradona proved their greatness

That might be true, unless he doesn’t do so well in the WC or get’s injured and it costs him big time, bird in the hand etc.
Don’t forget there is always plenty of new talent emerging during a WC.

I don’t understand why Wenger is constantly slated for his comments regarding transfers. He has clearly stated that he is looking. He is just refusing to be pinned down on which positions and which players. This is the correct approach because:

    1. Discussing specific players is:
    A. Disrespectful of the player’s current team and may even be tapping up.

    B. Alert the competition and increase prices.

    C. Alert Spurs and Pool who seem to constantly be linked with whatever player we are linked with.

    2. Discussing specific positions will:

    A. Unsettle existing our players who are currently in those positions.

    B. Will result in an avalanche of calls from agents.

    C. Raise prices.

Arsenal conduct transfer business the right way from strategy, negotiation, and respect perspectives. They have clearly decided to look for players to strengthen the team. Let them do their job the right way. It’s fine to speculate and discuss targets on these forums but the hate is unwarranted.
