Arsenal pick off Fenerbache but squad dangerously stretched as 3 doubts raised…

by & filed under Match report.

Light work my friends. That is what Arsenal made of a very odd Fenerbache side. I thought the only tactical option for them was to turn up all guns blazing. Instead they played the patience game and suffered the consequences.

I’m not going to give a detailed blow by blow account, but there were some notable incidents and performances in the game that merit further chat.

Firstly, the bad news. Our skinny squad really doesn’t take much of a hit to bruise like its been shot with a Metropolitan Police plastic bullet at a protest about school meals. Lukas Podolski pinged his hamstring so badly he had to be stretchered down the tunnel. I know they grade tears… That one looked like it sat in the bad category. Wenger said three weeks, when does he ever say anything different? We had to bring on Kieran Gibbs in his place, which worked out nicely, the concern for me is he’s a crock as well… and Monreal was pretty poor all night long. Against Spurs, he’ll be exposed as a weak link if he plays like that.

The good news on the playing front is we controlled the game with ease. Fenerbache didn’t stretch us at all. So we won’t be tired, and we’ve two days on Spurs who play Europa on Thursday.

Our keeper had a mixed bag. He made two or three superb saves, one at the near post in the first half was particularly excellent, along with the lovely early double save from Merieles. He did mix that in with a couple of needless flaps along with rushing out of his area. He always starts so deep… it’s no wonder he struggles to make it to the ball first.

Ramsey had another top performance. He’s adding goals and clinical passes to his game, which is always the sign a player has turned the corner. He’s playing with confidence and calmness. He’s playing with discipline and he’s throwing himself around like a man. About time… His two goals were well taken. The first came when Cazorla saw Theo’s run across the box, it looked like Theo or the defender edged it into the path of Ramsey who passed it home for the first goal.

The goal in the second half was a bit classier, some nice build up play saw Gibbs cut the ball to the near post with Ramsey steering the ball into the far corner. Cesc started to turn heads when he added goals to his game, it’s a sign of calmness… something that only comes with experience.

Great work. Jack must feel the pressure… which is superb news. The British core is being led by a Welshman, he knows that’s not right and he’ll up his game to compete. Inter-country competition… it’s a beautiful thing.

Cazorla was excellent as always. He’s a genius on the ball. Simple as that. He ferrets his way out of any space, he’s perfect with both feet and his vision is as good as the weighting he gives to each pass. Problem we have is that we only have one of him… which generally leads to overuse and fatigue. That’s why an Ozil would be an excellent move. Especially as Cazorla now has to move out onto the left side of midfield.

We finished the night with a front three of Sanogo, Miyachi and Gibbs. Amusing and Carling Cup like, but a distinct reality we might face as the season goes on. Sanogo, however you paint it is painfully raw. He’s not a ‘now’ player, but he’s out second best striker. Frightening. We don’t have a squad… we have many round pegs that seem the quite effectively slot into square holes. It’s not a sensible way to play and a strategy like that won’t bear fruit.

We need to spend £100m this week if we want to compete for things. £70m if we want top four. We’re in pretty bad shape heading into Spurs. A full back out of form. One adult striker. A left back in left midfield. Scary against a full Spurs squad who boast a bench.

On a separate point, the stadium was embarrassingly empty. Someone was trying to play the ‘people can’t afford it card’… sorry, not buying it. The showing at the ground was about ‘I can’t be bothered’. There’s no excuse this year, if you can’t afford it, sell your ticket or give it away to someone… You can get them a paper ticket, so you don’t even need to worry about giving them your card.

Leaving a spare empty really is poor… (read more about sharing a spare here)

Wow

Transfer wise, all the papers are trying to make their money today. The Mirror reckons third parties have offered us Benzema and Ozil, a bit like trying to sell your neighbours house (we’ve all been there after a beer or two)… not that we’re above listening… the Suarez deal a painfully naive example of that. The Telegraph reckons we have a 50% chance of Cabaye which probably means that deal is off. Oh and Arsene is making agitated ‘we’ll see what we can do’ noises.

People complain that I’m being negative, but I’m really not. It’s negative to take the attitude that beating Fulham and Fenerbache somehow means we’ll be ok this season. Positivity is wanting to improve because by doing so we stand a better outcome of a great season. If you believe we’ll compete with our current squad, you’re lying to yourself, because all the laws of reality clearly point to that being a falsehood.

I made the point last night that we ended the night with a front three of Ryo, Sanogo and Gibbs. Many thought this was perfectly acceptable as we were winning. Sure, it was acceptable if those introductions were by choice. They were the only players we could bring on. If players get tired at Spurs (which happens), those are our attacking options. Carling Cup options for a NLD… farcical regardless of the weight you’ve put into Wenger saying Sanogo will be a £50m player in 2 years.

Finally, some majorly exciting news, I have Simon Kuper coming on a podcast to chat about football and data. I can’t tell you how excited about this I am…mainly because its been a hot topic I’ve talked about a lot… because Arsene is behind the times. This guy co-wrote Soccernomics… it’s a great read if you’re a data geek. It goes way beyond Opta and Prozone, so tune in on Tuesday for that.

    Oh Theo Theo !

Auxerre are still waiting if we can loan him back to them. They know they sold us a player not ready for high level football.
Would wenger listen? Only 4 days left

  2. andy1886

Yes it’s not Sanogo’s fault, it’s Wenger to blame for putting him out of his depth. I still didn’t see the attributes though Theo, he’s tall and errr that’s about it.

  3. Ash79

Sam, you stick to your mediocre ambitions…

no hatred for Sanogo here, needs time. But Ryo – no fuckin chance.

  4. Ash79

PSG Chairman Al-Khelaifi: “Cabaye? He is a great player and I know Laurent Blanc likes him, but we didn’t make any offer to Newcastle.” #PSG

    Newcastle talking shite then

  5. Yavor

    Romford Pele August 28, 2013 11:26:21
“I would love Gonalons – would he be cup-tied though?”

No, Romford, he wont be cup-tied.

  6. Sam

What kind of question is that?
We won’t sign di Maria unless Madrid are really selling him for 10 quids and Ryo is not fit to start.
    So none,

Serge Gnabry is now our only option right now unless something happens in the market before sunday

  7. sylvain

So, in a champion’s league game, Ryo and Sanogo on the pitch…
FUCK I WAS CONVINCED IT WAS ONLY A BAD DREAM, but it really happened!!

What a fucking shame for our club…

  8. Eddie McGinty

I don’t know i this has been mentioned but the big gaps, notably in the Clock End upper, are the tickets that go on general sale. I’m not that surprised people didn’t want to pay £50 to watch a game that had already been won.

  9. gambon

    Stop talking about signings.

We aint signing anyone, we were never intending to spend anything.

£12m of sales and 2 feebies (Sanogo, Flamini) that was the plan.

Respect to Ramsey for his turn around, he has been immense so far this season.

  10. Arsenal2174

@ Mach iii you are an AKB fuckwitt. Yes we are playing well at the moment but Poldi is out for 3 weeks what happens if Santi and Rambo get injured we are fucked then aren’t we but hey look on the bright side we have $70 million in the bank and Sanogo .

  11. bishop

    like seriously
    so if nothing before sunday…….hmmmm
That means he will buy those targets begging to join us all on deadline day.

    God punish you wenger

  12. JBamford

Timao – Very different. Ramsey pre-injury was three times the player either Miyachi or Sanogo is. It just didn’t look like he’d ever return to being that player. Now it looks like he might. Miyachi and Sanogo are very limited players, though each in his own way. There is a reason no one else in Europe was looking at or talking about either. Plus “we” were also saying Gervinho “no chance”. I imagine you thought he’d come good. Sometimes Wenger puts stock in crap players. It’s as simple as that.

Ash loves to sounds stupid I don’t know why
This man believe jack wilshere is shit, what do you think he will about Ryo? He was actually pencilled for sept 2 and wenger got him off the medical room earlier.
He was not great last night but he’s not shit. He deserved to be around the team just like Ramsey we will see the real Ryo probably second half of the season.

  15. Dick Law

So does anyone really believe anything will happen before Sunday?! Flamini aside?

Does anyone have any real leads?! Its getting desperate!!

  16. The Hig

Fucking hilarious. How can people slate Ryo and Sanogo? They are raw TALENT. Meaning they have the potential to be good to great players. Not now. Besides, Ryo played a good cross for Jenko. And Sanogo was involved in the good play that resulted in the 2nd goal. It’s just hilarious to see people saying “Ryo is shit” or “Sanogo was terrible”. Yeah, there touches aren’t as deft asthe first team players and thats cos they are not first team players, yet. They might be in the squad but they are no first teamers. C’mon guys, if you want moan and groan at least do it over something that has some weight.

Exactly Timao, Alota cunts on here were on Ramseys case now all of a sudden they all sucking his cock cos he’s playing well. A player wont play well every game, but as a supporter you can see who are shit and who have a chance. And in my opinion, Ryo has been plucked from a high school in Japan and impressed at Feyenoord. Never played a minute of pro football. Sanogo is an international but he is shit. Wasn’t he part of the team that won the u20 WC? He’s still raw but he looks promising. Imagine you step out in your first ever CL game.

  19. salparadisenyc

Wenger is going to bring out the “we got a big match to prepare for this weekend” quote any moment, which will get him through until the final waning moments of the market.
Sinking feeling our singings will be under whelming to unknown on deadline day.

  20. bishop

You refresh all day hoping for arsenal in talks with messi…arsenal agree fee for ronaldo but nothing ever comes aside wenger saying all the players in the world are begging to join us..I have been doing that since june and all we have so far is SANGO…that alone will make you hate the player.

  21. Arsenal2174

Lets hope it doesn’t happen but what are all the AKB wankers going to say if Wenger signs no one of real quality and Spuds and possibly pool finish above us because we wont have enough squad depth.

  22. Mike adamski

I don’t think wenger will buy anyone .
TV5 is back soon plus he keeps promoting sagnas versatility – so dont expect a CB
how on earth he has been allowed to not purchase a top striker thus far is beyond belief .
I like giroud but is he top draw ? No way is he

Shoulda dam well bought higuain or lewandowski in June

    WENGER OUT !

  23. The Hig

I enjoy this blog and agree that Wenger should sign some players. But that doesn’t give me reason to slate our current squad even though they playing well.

And what are the Non-AKB’s gonna say if wenger spends 150m on 4 World Class players and still doesn’t win anything?

  24. andy1886

Hig, Sanogo is our front line striker if OG gets injured or banned. He is a million miles away from being good enough. Wenger mentioning him in the same breath as a £50m valuation is an insult to our intelligence. His touch wasn’t just below standard it was awful. He looked lost. Add that to our £70m to £100m budget and you can see why people would be pissed off.

We don’t need another project that may come good or be sold in 2-3 years (check the record we have in these gambles over the past ten years – chances that he’ll come good are about 1 in 20).

I don’t blame the player, I blame Wenger. You can’t polish a turd they say but AW seems to have about twenty boxes of turd polish in his cupboard anyway.

  25. cj1764

When VP left i thought YOU CUNT but in hindsight i can’t blame him, had he stayed THE CUNT still wouldn’t have a WINNERS MEDAL,

WE AIN’T GOING TO SIGN ANY QUALITY PLAYERS THAT WILL ENABLE US TO COMPETE FOR THE MAIN TROPHIES.

OUR CHALLENGE THIS SEASON LIKE THE LAST 2 WILL BE TO PLAY FOR 4TH AND WITH THE WAY THE SHIT UP THE ROAD HAVE PERFORMED THAT COULD BE A TASK ( FUCKING SHAME ON YOU WENGER,GAZIDIZ & KRONKE)

  26. andy1886

Hig: “And what are the Non-AKB’s gonna say if wenger spends 150m on 4 World Class players and still doesn’t win anything?”

I would say at least we tried, did our best etc. Not gave up competing five years ago.

  27. Dogtanian

They’ll say he should have had plan in May 2013, bought his world class players as early as possible, given the team a chance to gel and train in a good preseason and give them the best possible chance at winning trophies instead of going on a supermarket sweep and needing all of September through November to bed the team in.

  28. Childish Gambino

    In a nutshell we need:

GK – (An old head a la Cesar, etc)
CB ( 3rd choice- Toby Alderwield)
LW ( Arshavin replacement – Di Maria)
    RW ( Gervinho replacement -)
    DM
    AM (Mata)
    ST

I dunno. Im even tired of Wenger. FUCK WENGER.

  29. bishop

    Hig,
you are funny..do you expect people to be praising a player that didnt play well for almost a whole season..it goes up quickly and down as quickly as well..
can you remember ashavin in 2009 when he scored 4 against liverfool.
would you have ever thought he will be 2 seasons wonder and even turn out a deadwood….football is all about moments and people go with whatever the player is showing to the fans to see.
so if ramsey is doing well now..he deserves the praise and while he wasnt, he deserved the stick too cos it attimes make them even get better.

  30. finestcuts

That’s exactly what’s going to happen, Wenger’s.going to pretend he’s going for glory, when in fact the aim is to give debuts to Carling Cup players in the Premier League,.and hope they are good enough. The way we have failed to capture any of our targets thus far is down to Wenger, players used to be eager to be part of one of his teams, it’s no longer much of a player magnet. This should be the last season of Wenger’s tenure,.it’s time to appoint a very ambitious new manager, Wenger has been in charge for too long, a change in management is long overdue.

  31. arsenal-flavour

    The HigAugust 28, 2013 12:09:02

“Fucking hilarious. How can people slate Ryo and Sanogo? They are raw TALENT. Meaning they have the potential to be good to great players”

Where is your evidence that they will be great players? all we have seen of them is mistakes… I am not saying there shit by the way but this point this is zero proof that they will be great players.

Ryo I have some hope for as he is like how Walcot was at that age.

Sanago I have to say looks a bad player he has on of the worst touches/dribbling I have seen in football he has the control of a defender and the agility of one.

I am sorry for slating Sanago but the reason I do is we just loaned out Akpom who is a far superior player he has a decent finish good movement and much much much better ball control.

Wenger should of loaned out Sanago or not bought him at all Akpom had a really good pre season he earn’t a place in the squad before Sanago but Wenger gave preference to his new signing to show a point.

  32. Mike adamski

Maybe it is better wenger doesn’t spend

He’s living on past glories – unearthing gems etc

I’m petrified of the shit that he could throw in the transfer trolley Monday night

Look At a lot of his transfers over the trophy less years –
    MOST have been SHIT

  33. The Hig

andy1886. So you saying that our current aren’t trying? Not doing their best?
Whether Wenger buys or not, Arsenal will be Arsenal. And i’ll still be supporting them. We all frustrated with the trophy drought but at least the club is financially stable which is more important than a shiny new signing. I don’t want to support Arsenal a few years from now in the Championship because they bankrupt from buying. Remember something, we don’t have owners that are willing to shove cash down the clubs throat. We have a stingy Yankey. I do believe Wenger will buy the players HE feels he needs. And he knows the players better than we do. One thing I can say is that he will not just buy any player for the sake of buying. People said Arteta was a panic buy, poor mans Fabregas, etc. And now? Don’t get me wrong, I am starving for a great striker, a DM, a GK and a LW. But even if we don’t buy, we will never miss top 4.

  34. Arsenal2174

@ The Hig but it’s not the point that most people on here are making see this is what happens we win two games and fuck we are world beaters again AKB’s are like ” bring on Bayern will rip them a new one’ blah blah fucking blah. I have no problem with Wenger buying raw talent like Sanago and Ryo that’s what the Arsenal are known for and I admire and respect the fact that we do give these kids a good chance. But fucking hell don’t you want to ever challenge for silverware again or is 4th spot really are trophy. We told the world that we could match financial wise the biggest clubs in the world we could compete with them $$ wise. We could buy Rooney and pay him $250k per week hell we could do more then that remember that statement. 3 of the top clubs in the land with all new managers we have an established group of players that just needed more depth and 2-3 real quality signings to mount a title challenge in probably the best (chance ) year we will get $70- $100 mill in the bank and the best we can do is sign a fucking injury prone free transfer “who was thinking about giving it away to be a post well fuck me. Also didn’t Kos say recently that Wenger need to buy or he would consider he’s option because it is just to hard mentally and physicaly scrapping into 4th year after year because ONE not enough squad depth and secondly not enough quality to get any higher.

  35. Tuna Melt

Carlton Cole looked promising, scored many goals at youth, U19, 20, 21 levels and look how shit he turned out to be, he’s still raw now!

Just because this lad scored a few goals in the tin pot French div 2, which is the standard of League 2 over here, it doesn’t mean he’s any good. Raw usually means the guy has got a bit of talent but he’s a clueless, headless chicken, but last night we didn’t even see any sign of the talent.

One for the future? Nah, one who will get a free transfer in a couple of years to Fulham or West Ham’s reserves, fail miserably and end up back in the French div 2.

  36. Ash79

Sam – you are deluded young man. I have NEVER said Jack is shit. Not sure where you got that from. You musn’t cause mischief by creating things.

Ryo will never make it and we as a club must not persist with projects either.

Fener – kicked out. Do ST holders get a refund on that game then fuckin should.

  37. The Hig

Okay Okay Okay, Akpom vs Sanogo. Akpom did look better in pre season. I also think he is a better player at the moment. This is simply because he’s been at Arsenal for a long while and knows the “style” of the club. Remember, Wenger loans out youngsters that are good to gain 1st team experience.

  38. Romford Pele

Not to defend Sanogo too much, but I do believe people are being harsh on me. As has been alluded to, it’s Wenger’s fault for thrusting him into the limelight so early. But how certain people can ascertain that his career will be a flop before it’s started is beyond me.

I remember when we signed Song. He was honestly one of the worst players I had ever seen at the time. Touch was awful, passing was awful and he was clumsy beyond belief. But he improved remarkably and he’s now playing at Barca. While i’m not his biggest fan, he worked hard to get to where he is today. Most people were saying he should’ve been dumped on the scrap heap at the time.

Essentially, I can understand people’s frustrations but I think it’s harsh to take it out on Sanogo. You can’t write off someone’s career at the age of 20. Level your blame at the management. And just for the record, he turns into a beast on Football Manager! We all know they’re never wrong 😉

  39. arsenal-flavour

    The Hig

You jump from one extreme to the other.

Just because we are calling to spend doesn’t mean we want the club to spend 150 million and bankrupt its self,

WE want to SPEND WHAT WE CAN! which we are not doing at the moment.

Did you know by not spending the extra cash we have by the end of September we will have to pay a fuckkk load of corporations tax on it if we spend that 70 million we won’t and we will be nowhere near any danger of bankruptcy.

  40. Dick Law

Sometimes you can just tell when players arent going to make it …

    Malz
    Bischoff
    Vernazza
    Diawara
    Stepanovs
    Boa Morte
    Owusu Abeye

    etc etc

and now we have Ryo, Sanogo, Gnabry, Yennaris, Akpom, Aneke etc etc

The cold hard facts are that these players will never be good enough for first team Premiership clubs looking to be in the top four. So why should we persist with them?!

Fergie would have shipped them all out a long time ago ,… its a total waste of space and resources

  41. arsenal-flavour

    The HIg

HE loans out players and ruins there careers he sends them to league 1 or championship sides where the quality of football is poor and they young players are much more likely to be injured…

WE have had masses of injuries to are promising young players because of this.

Its funny how Barcelona don’t loan out their young players they just develop them at the club.

  42. Oh Theo Theo!

    The Hig August 28, 2013 12:35:01

andy1886. So you saying that our current aren’t trying? Not doing their best?

    You seriously believe this shit?

WE HAVE 150m SAT IN THE BANK. We could spend £75-90m of that and not notice… We are not going bust you melt. We are not going to get relegated to the Championship.

Fuck me, you AKBs are just beyond the pale! It’s claptrap and sad you can’t see it.

Sanogo = not good enough for the prem this year. Fact. That he is our backup striker is just plain embarrassing. Look at that compared to city, Utd, Spurs, Liverpool.
Ryo = not good enough for the prem this year. Fact. Look at chelsea, city, utd, spurs’ winger options.

We have no god given right to 4th. If he doesn’t sign another striker we will have parts of the year where Sanogo is playing main striker – that’s a shitty prospect.

The fact that your rose tinted wengerspecs can’t see that is just embarrassing for you. I am embarrassed for you.

  43. Samir

AS: Manchester United will make a an offer of €50million for Real Madrid’s
    Mesut Ozil.

Guess that mean we’re out of the race…

  44. Samir

PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi: “Cabaye? He is a great player and I know Laurent Blanc likes him a lot. But we didn’t make any offer”

  45. Dogtanian

This lad Tancredi Palmeri is saying that both Arsenal and ManU have been on to Real about Ozil.

I do thik this is far fetched but if there is any truth Lukas and Per better be getting on the blower to convince him that we are the ones to choose and who the f8Ck is David Moyes in any event…

  46. TitsMcgee

Mind-boggling that everyone and their dog could see this razor-thin squad coming back to bite us due to injuries and Wenger couldn’t.

There has to be a financial incentive for him not to spend. Has to be.

There’s having ‘principles” and then there’s straight up idiocy.

Nobody in Europe could add to this team full of “quality” eh?

Or is it nobody in Europe could add to this team full of “quality” at Wenger’s price ceiling?

  47. arsenal-flavour

    On ANOTHER NOTE!

Am saddened that Podolski got injured I know the opposition where poor but I think he set up all the goals…

He was actually playing like a really good winger running down the line putting balls into the box don’t get why he doesn’t do that all season.

  48. Wallace

he’s got to land one of di Maria/Ozil/Mata, and a couple of other very good players for me to forgive him for this summer’s inactivity. and even if he does, i still think he’ll have winged it. let him coach, and bring someone in who can actually get deals done.

  49. Danish Gooner

Latest comment from wenger “I see what i can do”,that is liking asking your girlfriend at tesco to bring home some nice treats and see ends up bying a packet of the crisp with the flavour you cant stand. He have had 4 full months to seek and identify his targets and he STILL cant get it done, unbelievable !!!!

  50. arsenal-flavour

I actually just realized we have the weakest strike force in the premier league bar the newly promoted teams loooooooooooool.

    Giroud Sanago

and here is why you can’t count Walcott and Podolski because if either are playing as center forward we have no cover on the wings…

  51. Mike adamski

    Oh god
If bug eyes goes to man yoo that will piss me off even more

Dam you wenger ! Get in there and hijack it !

  52. gambon

I do fucking laugh when people say Miyaichi may be a great player. Hes fucking terrible.

If anyone heard about a kid at Chelsea (who had barely played a senior game in his career, had struggled at Bolton and Wigan, barely getting picked, and only ever made an impact at Feyenoord in a very weak league) being hyped up like Ryo is they would be pissing themselves.

Arsenal fans are hilarious, thinking every kid is the next big thing.

Remember Senderos, Djourou, Kerrea fucking Gilbert, Denilson, Diaby, Merida, Barazite, Ebecilio, Wellington……..

All these kids were gonna be amazing.

Remember Eisfeld supposedly beig better than Gotze at youth level.

    What a load of bollocks,

  53. Ash79

There has to be a financial incentive for him not to spend. Has to be. – agree, i cant see any othe reason. He has had 3 months to spend, why on earth would he start spending now. He’s just praying for monday 11pm to come fast.

    TIMELINE
From now – spurs game. “we are focussed on the next game, this is our priority”

After spurs game to Monday 23.00. “we try and we work very hard”

Tuesday onwards. We tried, we worked hard. We must focus on the quality we have in the squad.

Plus as abonus, he will chuck in the nonsense line “apart from real madrid, no one has spent big”….yes its bollocks but he will say it.

  54. The Hig

OTT – I’m not an AKB, never was. Just don’t like guys slating players who haven’t even started their careers. And who says that there aren’t any deals happening? Just cos you don’t see it in the news doesn’t mean nothings going on. How naive can u get.

AFlav – Now I wouldn’t know much about Championship, but I have heard it’s a quite a tough league to play in. A good place to learn.

But I guess everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I seriously hate that we didn’t sign anyone of note yet, but I don’t slate the team/players for the Managers and CEO’s and Chairman’s and Sir Chips mistakes.

  55. The Hig

Nobody said Ryo is the next best thing. But you cannot say his career is over before it started. He has potential and might fulfill it. If he doesn’t, toughies.

  56. WDF

People need to elevate their understanding of football, yes Jack does need to improve but the reason he is considered a talent lies in the stats.

He like Rambo has so far this season just needs to add goals and assists to his game to fulfill his potential.

Last season stats from February (http://www.eplindex.com/25709/tom-cleverley-jack-wilshere-stats-comparison.html) should convince enough that at his age he is an exceptional talent.

Sometimes simple football minds only see a goal and assists and judge on a game by game basis forgetting there are many other factors which go into making a good player. Stop over simplifying your opinions and get informed.

Lastly we need to BUY SOME FCUKING QUALITY PLAYERS!!!!!!

    that is all

  57. andy1886

Hig: “But even if we don’t buy, we will never miss top 4.”

Could you be any more compacent? If you don’t believe that the Spuds have a better squad them you really are living in cloud cuckoo land. Even with Bale gone they’ve improved. If he stays then even more so.

We finished a single point ahead. Just one. Even a small stroke of good or bad fortune is enough to eliminate that differential. Only a fool would make a statement like that.

  58. Oh Theo Theo!

The Hig – you read what you wrote right?

“We all frustrated with the trophy drought but at least the club is financially stable which is more important than a shiny new signing. I don’t want to support Arsenal a few years from now in the Championship because they bankrupt from buying. Remember something, we don’t have owners that are willing to shove cash down the clubs throat. ”

Classic AKB psychobabble. All of it bullshit. Any of that you can support??

  59. nuudles

I think as a bare minimum we need to land one of Mata, Rooney, Di Maria, Ozil, Suarez, Benzema or Casillas. I would like more than one but as a bare minimum the club must buy one of those, especially after all the comments about going big, competing for trophies & etc (they have no foot to stand on if they do not buy anyone of that calibre and things go pear shaped).

  60. andy1886

    Coming soon:

Following the close of the January window (no big signings) “The Season Starts Now” – AW.

  61. arsenal-flavour

    The Hig

I respect that, People shouldn’t call the players cunts and hurl insults at them but I think it is fair to say if a player has a certain weakness or not.

For instance if say for instance podolski kept missing sitters you shouldn’t be calling him a cunt but fans should be saying he needs to work on his finishing and composure.

Say for instance there is a player who it becomes apparent there not very good I think it is fair for the fans to say well Maybe he shouldn’t play for Arsenal but good luck to the lad.

Also my point still stands Barcelona don’t loan out their youths to clubs where they will more than likely get injured

  62. The Hig

OTT – I never disagreed that we don’t need players. Anyone can see that our season is fucked if we don’t sign quality additions. BUT, I have been disagreeing with guys slating young players. Wenger knows best. lol.

  63. TitsMcgee

““We all frustrated with the trophy drought but at least the club is financially stable which is more important than a shiny new signing. Arsenal are far from being anywhere close to bankrupt.

Also nobody says go out and spend 500 million on your squad like Chelsea or City.

Is it really too much to ask to have at least 1 backup for every position?

    Literally?

  64. andy1886

“We are playing better than Spurs without signings.”

Shame that it’s not reflected in our respective points tally then isn’t it?

Will this be the new CL criteria? Not league points but an assessment of who ‘played better’ judged of course by AW.

  65. DUIFG

Ive ripped this from bbc sport “Did you know? Santi Cazorla has created 103 goalscoring chances since the start of last season, more than twice as many as any other Arsenal player (Jack Wilshere 50). ”

suprise suprise quality creates chances, somebody please show this to wenger.

  66. arsenal-flavour

    WDF

Some good comments but you come across as a bit to arrogant.

I base my opinion on Jack not down to the number of assists or goals he gets but what he does on the pitch…

Which is often times needless reckless tackles

Losing possession of the ball in dangerous areas

Trying to take on to to many players

His poor range of passing e.g. (long range passing is weak)

His vision and imagination not being as good as rmasey or cazorla

Only sticking to the pass and go strategies

I am not saying his shit far from it but he really needs to improve his game allot

  67. The Hig

Tits. Like I said before, I don’t disagree that we need players. Ofcos we do. We need like 5-6 players. Everybody knows that and so does Wenger. If he goes into the season with the current squad then he’s nuts. He wouldn’t do that, no manager would do that. Wenger is always silent on who he wants to buy, he’s always been like that. We only hear about a signing when the deal is done. The earliest we hear anything is a player doing a medical. Before that? Zilch. I just don’t get guys slating our young players, or any player, cos they frustrated cos Wenger didn’t sign anyone. If anything, the players need us now more than ever. They don’t need negative comments on how bad they are. That’s why we lost the Villa game. And ofcos the shit ref.

  68. BERMY BOY

  70. gambon

““We all frustrated with the trophy drought but at least the club is financially stable which is more important than a shiny new signing. I don’t want to support Arsenal a few years from now in the Championship because they bankrupt from buying”

Totally agreed, this is utter bollocks, the kind of shit usually spewed on Untold Loonies.

We arent financially stable….we have as much cash as the other 19 teams in the PL combined, its called money hoarding.

As for Bankrupt bollocks…..you really are clueless.

We have revenues this year of £295m, next year £320m

We are on course to generate £95m profit this season, and over £100m next season, on top of the £160m we already have in the bank.

Now tell me why the fuck we need £160m, £255m or £360m cash in the bank? I would really love to know.

We have the ability to support a £180m wage bill…..AND make £40m profit this season, we can run a £200m wage bill next season….AND make a £40m profit.

Even if we spend £100m tomorrow we will still make profits in the next 2 seasons.

The only way we could go bankrupt is to spend £200m the next 3 years in a row.

AFC is like Brewsters millions, its virtually impossible to spend what it would take to bankrupt us.

What would be the best way to bankrupt us?

Spend £400m on the players…..well the quality of player we would get for that would win us the PL multiple times and the CL possibly.

All of a sudden sponsorship would go through the roof, TV money would rise and stadium revenue would rise if we were winning, covering the expenditure that was supposed to send us bankrupt.

  71. Tuna Melt

We could get most of these players before the end of the transfer if the effort was put in for £120M

    Micah Richards £12M
    Flamini FREE
    Beñat (Bilbao) £15M
    Cabaye £15M
    Mata £25M
    Di Maria £22M
    Benzema £30M

If we want to be challenging we need to radically beef up our squad with recognised talent. I doubt we’ll even get one of these in though.

  72. Arsene's Nurse

We are so short of bodies it’s laughable.

1 Wojciech Szczęsny [not good enough]
    3 Bacary Sagna [makeshift CB]
    4 Per Mertesacker
    5 Thomas Vermaelen (captain) [crocked]
    6 Laurent Koscielny
7 Tomáš Rosicky [will get crocked]
    8 Mikel Arteta (vice-captain) [crocked]
    9 Lukas Podolski [crocked]
10 Jack Wilshere [in the process of being crippled]
    12 Olivier Giroud
    14 Theo Walcott
    15 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain [crocked]
    16 Aaron Ramsey
    17 Nacho Monreal
    19 Santi Cazorla
21 Łukasz Fabiański [flappy – not good enough]
    22 Yaya Sanogo [roflmao]
    24 Abou Diaby [super-crocked ‘n crippled]
    25 Carl Jenkinson
26 Emmanuel Frimpong [DENCH – crocked – not good enough]
28 Kieran Gibbs [will get crocked]
30 Park Chu-Young [how is he still in the squad????]
31 Ryo Miyaichi [not good enough]
52 Nicklas Bendtner [Biggest Arsehole ever]

With the inevitable suspensions and further injuries we are going to really struggle this season. Some of those that are fit are either not good enough or injury prone themselves. Park and Bendtner will never play for Arsenal again.

    Omnishambles.

  73. arsenal-flavour

    Tuna Melt

Why would Mata go for 25 million in this market his at least 35 million
He was the best midfielder last season can’t see them selling him at a knock off price.

They sold Higuain for 35 mill so expect a similar price tag for Benzema

  74. Oh Theo Theo!

The Hig – they didn’t lose against Villa coz of the ref and booing!!

They lost coz we ended up with a German international forward playing LB and Aaron Ramsey playing CB.

Oh and Villa mugged our total lack of organisation for that game. They had a plan that worked. Didn’t work against Chelsea and Liverpool. Go figure.

And 3 points are 3 points – we got 3 points at newcastle by playing shit and got CL football. You discounting that?? LoL.

  75. TitsMcgee

“They don’t need negative comments on how bad they are. That’s why we lost the Villa game. ”

The fans are the reason AFC lost the Villa game?

  76. Guninurback

    Hey we won!

Congrats, I’m just saying this to the AKB because I certainly couldn’t be bothered to watch this shit. So what if we win against Fener? We’ll be sent flying from either the group stages or the first knock out round no matter what.

So what where you celebrating last night? Arsene securing his yearly bonus?

Pedders is completely right it’ll take about a 100 mill to get me to bother watching this team play under this manager again.

  77. The Hig

OTT, I just said we playing better than Spurs with their new signings. MEANING, we will always play better than Spurs. MEANING they will never pip us to CL. MEANING we will beat them this weekend with or without signings. Guys, Wenger is going NOWHERE. Might as well embrace him.

  78. nuudles

@The Hig, sorry mate, that is just plain wrong. Yes Spurs have not really clicked yet, but we were incredibly poor against Villa. Yes the Kozzer penalty was harsh but in such last-ditch moments it is always 50-50. Apart from our goal I cannot recall us looking threatening (Rosicky had one or two moments on the edge of the box, but thats about it). We looked clueless on the ball, they closed us down effectively and we didnt know how to respond. I struggle to think of one player who really showed fight and class and this is against a team that just barely survived the drop last season…

  79. gambon

    Begovic £10m
    Alderweireld £7m
    Cabaye £15m
    Flamini £0
    Mata £35m

Centre forward will have to wait as there arent any on the market of any quality right now.

Suarez, Benteke or similar next summer.

  80. andy1886

RM will not sell Benzema and Higuain in the same window, Bale or no Bale.

We may get Cabaye (good but not great) but there is no sign of a striker. Add perhaps Flamini and that’s a poor window by anyone’s standards.

Arsene thinks this is a squad that can challenge (by which I don’t mean finishing 20 points off the top). He’s either mad or lying, possibly both.

  81. The Hig

Tits. Well, half the supporters don’t have faith in the current squad. The ref was piss poor and we were a bit unlucky. But this whole transfer shit is having a negative impact on the players. All the negative comments about how our team isn’t good enough and year in year out they give us great football. Liverpool spend and don’t win anything. At least we make CL.

  82. gambon

As much as i like Ozil Im not hugely bothered that he isnt moving.

IMO Santi is perfect in that role.

We need someone of similar technical ability & creativity out wide left/right.

You need 2 strikers on the pitch so Walcott or Podolski should rotate alongside a CF with the other wing taken by a DiMaria/Mata type player.

I love the idea of Mata as he and Cazorla can switch contstantly and form the best creative partnership in the league by a mile.

    Walcott———Cazorla——–Mata

    ——————-Giroud

    and

    Cazorla————Mata———–Podolski

    ——————–Giroud

    Both work well for me.

Add a top CF and we have a world class attack.

  83. arsenal-flavour

    The Hig

we lost the Villa game because we were poorly prepared and as for the negativity perhaps lay some blame on the manager for that.

What you have to understand even the players were calling in fact desperate for new signings they know the squad is threadbare…

As for the penalties they were all justified the first penalty was obvious the second one wasn’t but it actually was a penalty they super slowed it down and Koz when he slides in knocks the back leg of the player with his other foot just before touches the ball…

Stop making excuses We should support are team but if you have the attitude that they can do no wrong the team will never improve

Every club in the world criticizes there players/teams when they play/perform badly get used to mate.. Its a competition its sport these players get paid millions so they have to earn it

Nuudles. Agreed we were poor. But we had one or two bars and we started the game well. It all went downhill after the penalty and when the ref started giving cards for nothing. In my time watching Arsenal, the team loses confidence when ref’s decisions are always against them and start playing terrible. And we had injuries to worry about as well.

I hate to say it but they’ve showed real ambition to push forward.

    We’ve showed real Mismanagement.

  91. salparadisenyc

This court of arbitration is a fucking joke, coming out with this ruling banning Fenerbahce from Europe the day after being ousted in the playoff. Surely this decision could of, or was made sooner. They were playing under an original appeal which dates back to June post season. From their performance one gets the feeling they already knew it was done and dusted either way.

  92. lord snotty

Is Wanker accountable to no-one for his gross and embarrassing mis-management and in particular the waste of this transfer window? What a fucking omni-shambles!! What a useless embarrassment of a “manager”. It is obscene that this man is paid £7 million for a job that he simply refuses to do.
This is a nightmare and I keep pinching myself in the hope I will wake up to find Wanker was sacked in 2006.

  93. The Hig

LOL. Jeeeeeez OTT you don’t seem to listen. I never said we don’t need players,we need 5 or 6 players. I just said we playing better than Spurs without new signings. Lamela and Eriksen? Well, they good players BUT football is a team sport. Unless Lamela and Eriksen are gonna pass the ball between themselves and run all day long without getting tired and be on top form every game and adapt to PL very quickly and remain injury free. Then I can say they will beat us to CL. They might make it to CL, but not at our expense.

  94. nuudles

@The Hig, we were worse than Spurs first game and better second, but it was on the day and against different opposition. Fact is they are ahead of us on points and that is all that matters, saying that based on the evidence of two league games (one of which I would love to forget) that we will beat them is incredibly naive…

Given the current situation no-one will argue we have the better squad. Our starting 11 is a match for them if everyone is fit, heck with Rambo & Santi playing like they are our starting 11 is a match for anyone in the league on our day. But we have virtually no depth. If Ramsey andf Jack are both out for this weekend we will end up with a bench with outfield players Jenk, Frimpong, Gnabry, Sanogo, Zalelem & Ryo. That is a bench with 32 PL starts between them (with Jenk contributing 20). If we are honest: they should all still be playing for the reserves of getting competitive loan experience elsewhere.

  95. peanuts&monkeys

    @ the Hig
“And what are the Non-AKB’s gonna say if wenger spends 150m on 4 World Class players and still doesn’t win anything?”

How can a manager not? If Wenger has any bit of tactical footballing grey cells left, he need not spend even 100 mill.

oh ! BTW, your line above is exactly what Wenger wants to avoid. He doesn’t want to spend because he knows he cannot make the team compete coz he doesn’t understand modern football anymore. So, better give the money back to Stan for a 10% commission.

  96. Tuna Melt

Mourinho wants rid of Mata. I reckon they’ll sell him for what they bought him for. In some biz are twisted way they will consider swapping Mata and £5M for Willian some kind of success.

A number of teams wanted Higuain, for some reason no one wants Benzema even though he is the better player. Madrid will be desperate to recoup some cash before the end of the window. All our transfers can be paid in full immediately, no messing. I think that should give us a bit of bargaining power as the window draws to a close.

  97. The Hig

Well Tits, thats life. We weren’t all blessed with the same talents. Some of us have talents elsewhere and some of us are just to lethargic to find our talents.

  98. DUIFG

That Ozil comment is worrying, dont know why we havent got multiple irons in the fire, why are we not sniffing around the Munians, draxlers of the world when our cat A targets fall through, our approach looks haphazard thats as if we even have one at all,

Sanogo has definitely looked pretty raw so far, but he’s only had 25mins give or take. if he’s ahead of Akpom you’d hope it’s because he’s looking a different kind of player in training. plus, very tall players rarely look elegant on the ball.

Nacer Chadli Left Wing 7.172.000 £
    Paulinho Central Midfield 17.358.000 £

All of whom would get in our first team squad. Add in Lamela and Erikson and a strong team and squad.

And, as we proved last year, it’s not how you start it’s how you finish. Without players there’s no way that Rosicky, Jack, Arteta, Gibbs, Sanogo, Vermaelen haven’t missed a ton of games as they’re going to play a lot.

He has an inherent desire not to spend(be it for own personal financial gain or not to be seen as a hypocrite because he’s preached for so long how “unfair” it is that Chelsea and City have so much money) and now that we are a running joke across the world for not having any ambition he couldn’t sign big players even if he could put his frugality aside.

Nobody wants to come here to jump up and down with Champagne because we nipped Spurs for 4th on the last day of the season.

@andy, Real are still sniffing around Suarez as he is the type of player who would link well with Bale & CR. Even if they do not get him their front line options will be (assuming they get Bale): CR, Bale, Benzema, Di Maria & Morata. Seing that both CR & Bale play predominantly on the left wing they might play a front three of (from right to left) Di Maria-CR-Bale

I think Benzema is gettable but it is unlikely if they do not get Suarez. Liverpool will be more inclined to sell to them than to us.

sonogo fell over under pressure everytime he tried hold the ball up. surely that should be his strength? or is he more of a small man in a bigmans body?

    Diego Caballero ‏@dejcab 4m
André Villas-Boas indicates Bale transfer could happen very, very soon and adds: “it’s a dream move for him” (via @KieranCanning ).

I think even If we do not get a quality striker,we got to find another one, albeit an average one. Giroud for the whole season ????? That’s atrocious.

It is not even like having to rely on RVP the whole season.

“But I say to you well that’s life players get criticized when they play poorly whilst being paid millions…It’s got to work both ways…”

    Yep

Not a friendship ladies club we all hold hands and talk about are periods

Would you prefer us sit in unison rows where we all have to force a smile on are face for 90 minutes where no negative words about the regime I mean Arsenal can be said.

Where we chant Wenger WENGER WENGER WENGER, and clap for an hour after the game has finished?

I dont see Real selling Ozil. He is their CAM, yes Modric can play there but in my opinion Modric should play a bit deeper in the box-to-box role. The media is very quick to jump to conclusions…
