John Henry, what are you smoking? | Suarez bid rejected, but it can’t last | Bernard for Gervinho

by & filed under News Review.

What was Ivan smoking last night?

Ok, ok, so all the patience that we’ve been preaching finally took some reward last night when Arsenal, after two months, started to take market price seriously. Literally, for the first time since 1999. The clubs pursuit of Luis Suarez knocked up into 4th gear. Ivan Gazidis offered £40,000,001 for the Uruguay international last night which meant Liverpool had to formally tell the striker this had happened…

… Like he wasn’t fully aware already right?

Now, this of course means bugger all outside us being serious for once. Liverpool still rejected the offer, somehow believing a club out there is ready to jump in with a £55m offer. No chance at all in my opinion. He’s no Cavani and Liverpool are no Napoli. £40m is an amazing sum of money for a player with more baggage than John Leslie.

Real Madrid would still seem the favourites if they fancy him. My hope is the Bale stories of a transfer request are true and he occupies their thoughts. Most people in the game believed Bale had agreed to one more year, but I guess David Moyes and his embarrassing summer have put paid to that so far. If he has asked for a transfer request out of Spurs, that’d be very interesting, mainly because Spurs have been spending money this summer, what £85m would do to their plans makes me judder… mainly because that’s two seasons of Champions League money. Think about that.

Arsene thinks Luis Suarez is the best striker in the league and he believes with him on board, we could win the league. It’s hard to disagree we’d be a different beast with him in the side. The player has given encouragement to the club, they know he wants in. That comes from the Arsenal players who have relationships with him… my main concern is that we’re behaving like a big club now, but we’re  not quite super elite like Madrid or Bayern. If a team like that matches our offer… well, it’s goodbye Suarez and by the time that happens, it’ll likely be goodbye Higuain.

I found it amusing that John Henry asked what Ivan was smoking when he bid £40m for Suarez. Errr, John, what were you injecting, drinking and smoking when you signed off deals for Andy Carroll and Stuart Downing? I mean seriously, that must have been a crazy 7 day bender in Vietnam…

The player is dividing opinion amongst the fanbase. You have the drama queens claiming they’ll relinquish their season tickets if he joins. I mean, seriously, have a quiet word with anyone protesting to that level. Then you have the ‘If he scored, I won’t celebrate’… eerrrr, yes you will. Again, some people think the world is their stage and they’ll play up to anything. Simple facts of football are these…

1. Footballers don’t have morals. Too much money and debauchery at an age where you really don’t need either.

2. Footballers aren’t educated.

3. Footballers don’t care.

If you want to take a moral standpoint on what Luis Suarez did, fine, but bear in mind a few things. Firstly, he comes from a culture where those things he said were acceptable. He grew up with 18+ years of that acceptability ingrained into him. He wasn’t given the tools, like we are in Western society, to free himself from said bad views (education, community, broadband internet).

Also other things to bear in mind. This has happened once. An isolated incident. In sport, you do dim things in the heat of the moment. If you’ve played Sunday League football, you’ll know what I mean (I’m not talking racist things, but don’t tell me you’ve never told an opposition player what his mum was doing round your house the night prior to the game). An isolated incident on the national stage is still outrageous for a grown man, but it doesn’t mean he’s subscribing to extremist EDL material in his spare time.

You can take offence to his actions, but you are essentially taking offence at somebody you should probably sympathise with. He’s just a dim footballer.

If you waste your life trying to hold people like these up as role models, you really are going to spend your whole life quitting your season ticket.

None of the above means I condone racism. It just means that there are two sides two every grubby story.

As for the biting thing. Please. I can’t even be bothered to get myself too deep into this one. If that’s your gripe, your really do need to get a grip. Ivanovic is apparently such an unsavoury character, even the Chelsea players hate him. The bite was so tepid, you didn’t even get a back page shot of the bruise it left. Not to mention the fact we’ve had players gob, punch and slap opponents. It’s all handbags.

Onto something else less controversial. Bernard rumours are hotting up like a gas fire… on gas mark 6.5. I’ve done some pretty extensive research on him. By that, I mean I’ve consumed two videos. He looks pretty good. He’s playing for Athletico Miniero. They’re in the Copa Liberatores semi final. The South American Champions League. He’s managed 15 goals and 12 assists in a season that boasts 46 games. Not bad for someone who is 20 years old. He’s fast, 5ft4… which is so small it’s almost a benefit. He can play with either foot, he’s mobile, very skilful and he could well be the top quality replacement we’re looking for with Gervinho heading out the other way… can you believe we’re getting a fee from Roma? Amazing.

Right, that’s me done for the day.

See you in the comments. Can’t wait to see how many people ask me if I condone racism… Twitter, you predicatable beast.

Sol Campbell was on a free Dan – big difference there. And Spurs thought he was gonna sign, even down til the last minute – ultimate betrayal!

Plus, back then, Spurs weren’t even relevant. That said Vertonghen is a great player and much better than Vermaelen.

  2. nuudles

@ McGee, ok, OG scored 5 in the 18 games against the rest of the top 10. Also in the CL for 2012/13 (because it is OG’s first CL season so cannot compare earlier) OG scored 2 and assited 4 in 7 games vs Higuain’s 1 goal and 2 assists in 9 games.

Once again, I am not saying OG is better than GH, I am also not saying OG is on par with GH, GH is definately better. I am however saying they are both “flat track bullies” and GH is not a big enough improvement over OG for me at £30+m. Their skillsets are very similar with GH’s biggest plusses as his higher pace and more clynical finishing (I know this is what has been missing for us).

I would much rather get Suarez, Rooney or Lewandowski over Hig. That said Hig would have improved our chances, in my opinion just not as much as the other options.

  3. Romford Pele

“I think we should go for Sakho. He’ll do most of what Dan descibes and is more feasible.”

I never understand why nobody mentions this dude – he is awesome!

  4. nuudles

Also in the 18 games against the rest of the top 10 Suarez scored 7 goals, he is clearly much more of a player for the big games than our other CF targets.

  5. Dannyboy

Makes me want to slit my wrists everytime I read comments like ‘maybe United will let us have Rooney, if we give them a free run at Cesc…’

Fucking hell, why don’t we tell United they can have a free run at Fellaini, if they do us a deal on Tom Cleverley??

  6. Dan Ahern

Romford — Ok, ok. But if we can bid for Suarez, we can sure as hell at least anger Spurs by bidding for their player!
Anyway, doubt he’d move. His reason for going there in the first place was playing time/guaranteed starts.

  7. Doublegooner

    Higuain down

    Suarez next …

Arsenal FC are just gonna end up spectators in this summer scenario.

  8. TitsMcgee

“Their skillsets are very similar with GH’s biggest plusses as his higher pace and more clynical finishing”

Clinical finishing at 1 to 3 rate is way better than a 1 to 9 rate.

Higuain scores 25-30 goals last year with the chances Giroud had and certainly fits better with our style of play way more than Giroud does. That is probably the difference between being securely into 3rd place on the last day of the year rather than sweating it out in Newcastle.

If you want to say Higuain isn’t double the worth of Giroud that’s your prerogative. To me he’s more than double Giroud’s value.

  9. Geoff

No footballer in their right mind would go to Spain right now. I said last year that Real or Barca in Spain would go tits up and still think they will.

In the past Real have been backed by the King and the government, but now both are potless. So see what happens.

Spain is a fag paper away from bunging up taxes and when that goes off see what happens to their wages, I’m sure that’s what they are being advised.

Real bidding for Suarez, Bale or anyone else I believe is a big ask.

However, I’ll have money we won’t get Suarez but end up saying we tried.

I so hope I’m wrong but he’s been lying to the fans for years, I can’t see him changing now.

Blimey it wasn’t that long ago I was told by someone in the know that the following day Higuain was having a medical.

    I won’t mention names though.

We still have one of our panic buys left from 2 years ago and he hasn’t even played one half for us. Even though we were told at the time they weren’t panic buys. Paid so much though we can’t give him away.

  10. londongunner

the irony of the suarez is racist comments makes me laugh as his the least racist player in the league.

    1. his grandfather was half black
2 his grandmother called him as a little child my lil negrito (which means my little black boy)

  11. DUIFG

Fair paulinho, but if you want an athlete Ramsey is actually class as clocking up milage.

If we somehow pull of Suarez Bernard in a week and chambo kicks on in the middle we will have a lot of keys to unlock those dreaded parked buses.

  12. gunnergetyou

This summer really not going to plan, if we were really after Higuain we should’ve just paid the money to get it done and dusted.

I cant realistically see Liverpool selling us Suarez. If anything they’ll just stall the deal in the hope that RM come knocking, who will almost certainly be looking for a new striker.

  13. londongunner

love how people are duped by the moral outrage of the press

suarez was involved in charity work in south Africa, bet you didn’t know that

I care about social inequality,” he said. “Whenever I can I love being active part of organisations that promote solidarity projects.

“Football has got this tremendous power of joining people, without any skin, religion and social discrimination.”

  14. Dan Ahern

The point isn’t that he called someone negro or negrito, it’s that he was trying to wind up Evra by saying he kicked him because he’s black.

Surely you can see the difference.

  15. Nasri's Mouth

Paulinho: He’s usually receiving the ball from a throw in, wrong footing about three players, and then sending an anti-climactic shot wide. He creates panic and indecision into the opposition.

This is why I think he’ll be very good for the team overall. While his percentages are actually pretty poor,(for a player of his calibre) both for shooting and for dribbling, he constantly works hard, and he’s always available. He’ll create space for others in the side which will help us, but I don’t expect him to break scoring records at Arsenal, purely because he wont see as much of the ball as he does at Arsenal

  16. Herkules

Missing out on Higuain is a sackable offense. Not having Fellaini already in the squad is a sackable offense. Starting the season with a fragile defensive line and inexperienced keepers is a sackable offense.

We must do everything we can to ensure this idiot is not given a new contract.

  17. Nasri's Mouth

    @londongunner

Napoli have worked really hard to keep their costs down (inc. wages) while increasing their commercials over the last few years. I suppose they’re a little like Dortmund in that aspect. Add to that they’ve semi-lucked out by having Cavani (you could argue that it was good scouting in the first place of course)

  18. ikon

    Ok.

I think we have seen enough of the following comment

“The point is that he converts a lot less of his shots than other players in his price bracket.”

The point is none of those players that we talk about in comparison play in the premier league. NONE!!!

This argument doesn’t even begin to make sense.

Secondly he notched up 30 goals in a woeful Liverpool side with a non-existent midfield

    Quoting from a website:

“3 of Robin van Persie’s 26 goals came from the penalty spot, whilst Luis Suárez didn’t score a single spot kick all season. The Dutch striker was the only Manchester United player to feature in all 38 Premier League games this season, starting 35 of those.
Luis Suárez missed 5 games through suspension but the Uruguayan still managed to lead the league in attempts on goal. His 187 shots on goal were 22 more than Gareth Bale who was next on the chart. This resulted in Suárez having the lowest shots to goals conversion rate in the top 10.”

If anyone reading this is a stats man, he would immediately then search on the most number of long range shots taken by each of these strikers.

Looking at Liverpool’s midfield, I would say high high chances many shots by Suqrez can be labelled as long range simply owing to the lack of a playmaker in their side.

    Now go through this:
    http://www.eplindex.com/9750/premier-league-long-range-shots-opta-stats-comparison.html

Liverpool are 7th in terms of attempts at goal from outside the box, more than United and Arsenal. And looking at the goals from outside the box, it is clear their efficiency is pretty sad from outside the box.

Imagine a star striker in a team with no playmaker, he will do almost anything to try to at least get the opposite keeper working, and my guess is Suarez did just that.

And btw, whoever came up with that stats table for how inefficient Suarez was, should deepen his love for stats if he is to make a career out of it.

  19. TitsMcgee

Yes Keyser. Nobody is worth the money.

    Higuain wasn’t worth the money.

Cahill wasn’t(was that earlier comment serious or a fooking joke?)

    Mata wasn’t.

Suarez won’t be either I imagine if we fail to increase the bid.

    See a trend here?

    It’s called convenient excuses.

You harp on and on like a Wenger fan-boy about not spending money just to spend it and how we aren’t Chelsea or City and we don’t have endless amounts of money but then justify passing on a player that would have been at least 15m cheaper.

You can try and spin around the topic by talking about things that YOU KNOW aren’t tangible like ” what is this player worth to you” because you know you leave the door open to saying there is no right answer because it’s all opinions.

  20. samsenal

If you are salivating at the thought of Suarez, then our only hope is that he really and truly wants to come to Arsenal, that he would choose us over Real. If we are his chosen destination then we could possibly get him for a fee close to what we have offered…but Lord, it will be ugly. Liverpool will fight tooth and nail to keep out of our hands. They will issue definitive statements declaring he is definitely not leaving, Gerrard will be in the press saying what a good player he is and how he looks forward to playing with him next season. Wenger will smirk in press conferences and say he can’t talk about it. The press will report each utterance from all the different camps as gospel truth, selling it as a development in the story….every day will see a new twist…

Some of you are not mentally robust enough to endure this fight.

Are you SURE you want Suarez, even if it costs you your sanity?

  21. BillikenGooner

Suarez is a bit of a nutter, but he’s a helluva player.

It would be all about making sure his ‘moments’ don’t keep him from key matches or the end of Cup runs.

It’s a gamble. Which is surprising, because everything points to Wenger not being a big gambler when it comes to transfers. Maybe he’s the one smoking something.

  22. londongunner

I actually like suarez and I like his antics, cheating is a part of sport!

Ive always rooted for the bad guy in movies, suarez is the villain and Im loving him..

He does need to think though, getting banned for 6 games is retarded but as for the tactical diving and winding up opposition players LOVE IT!!!

SUAREZ SUAREZ HE BITES AND HE SCORES HE BITES AND HE SCORES!!!!

  23. Sam

Bernard cannot be gervinho’s replacement he’s attacking midfielder not winger. L’equipe said he’s flying in today for medical tomorrow he’s set to sign but arsenal have problem with payment method because the player is 50% owned by a third party.
They should just pay the money and stop haggling same old arsenal

  24. Goongoonergone

    Dear Mr John Henry
Wenger and Gazidis have both been smoking opium. Their brains are so befuddled that they can’t multi-task with regards to transfers. They have set their sights on your Luis Suarez; you will drag this to the last day; they will say to us fans they tried desperately to sign a big name and we, the poor fans, will be left with nothing and get mugged all over again by this conscience-less duo.
The money will sit in the bank while everybody on Le Grove will start counting their transfer chickens when the next window opens.
    Yours in happy transfers

the irony of the situation is people are hating

suarez because he dives…. as did PIRES

people are hating suarez because he said negrito… which is a term of friendship

people are hating suarez because his dirty footballer….. as was viera

people are hating suarez because of handballs….. as DID THIERRY HENRY

even the best cheat because they will do anything to win, seperates the men from the boys the winner from the losers, that win at all costs.

people who think football players should be role models should shut the fuck up, its a sport where you get paid thousands to kick a ball whilst your married to a page 3 girl that your cheating on with a billion Essex sluts

come on guys stop this daily mail moral outrage bullshit

SPORT IS RUTHLESS get with the program

  27. nuudles

@ McGee, you simply cannot just look at shots/goals as it is a function of the number of shots taken. By that logic Poldi has scored 11 league goals with 33 shots (20 on & 13 off target), therefore his shots/goal ratio is also exactly 3, which is the same as Hig’s (16 league goals with 48 shots: 31 on and 17 off target).

My point is I would rather have a striker who shoots a lot (Suarez makes 4.33 shots per game on ave compared with Hig @ 1.71) and therefore has a worse shots/goal ratio but a better goals/game ratio as that is the crucial metric:
    Suarez: 143 shots (77 on & 66 off), 23 goals in 33 games (i.e. 0.697 goal/game ratio)
    Hig: 48 shots (31 on & 17 off), 16 goals in 28 games (i.e. 0.57 goals/games)

  28. Jim Lahey

@Herkules – Wenger laughs in the face of sackable offences, losing to a team in the 4th tier of english football… In anyones book that is a sackable offence, so to is managing a team the size of Arsenal and not winning anything for 8 years… its coming up on a decade of nothing.

  29. Nasri's Mouth

Ikon: The point is none of those players that we talk about in comparison play in the premier league. NONE!!!

well, he’s got a worse conversion rate than Michu who does play in the PL, and isn’t really at a better team than Suarez.

And before Suarez joined Liverpool his stats were similar.

(I do think he’ll improve us a lot, and I can see some reasons why he’ll get better at Arsenal, but I’m not totally sold on him)

  30. Havewesignedanybody

This transfer window is turning into the equivalent of Harry Redknapp’s wife’s snatch ….

    A dried up fuckfest

  31. unhappy gunner

I tell you who isnt worth the money…..monkey boy bale. A good footballer maybe worth 25 million….but 85 million. Turn it in. No way worth that much, football gone mad. I mean no one is worth that money, but yet thats the market. Fucking madness.

  32. N5

Londongunner, I’m not jumping on either the love or the hate bandwagon but I’m telling you when Suarez was calling Evra that name it wasn’t out of friendship or respect! so let’s not kid ourselves.

  33. Nasri's Mouth

Nuudles: My point is I would rather have a striker who shoots a lot

Where it get’s tricky is how you quantify what would happen if he didn’t shoot a lot.

So, if Suarez took less shots and passed instead would that mean that his more efficient team mates would then score more, or would someone else lose the ball ? etc, etc.

  34. ikon

Nasri’s mouth, we were talking about price bracket. So I said none of the strikers who we label as being in the same price bracket play in the premier league.

Swansea have a much much more potent midfield than Liverpool. The number of stunning goals Suarez scored last season is a testament to how hard he worked to be at a level where he ended up.

  35. TitsMcgee

“If you are salivating at the thought of Suarez, then our only hope is that he really and truly wants to come to Arsenal, that he would choose us over Real”

My concern is it’s going to come down to:

    Arsenal money vs Madrid money

…and despite’s Spain’s problems and despite how much Madrid has spent already I don’t think that’s a fight we’re gonna win.

  36. Mask of Zorro

    MaskofZorro – Is that all
    you consider ?”

yes you can try to reach a middle ground, but ultimately you pay what the seller think a fair value, just like when we sell players e.g Adebayor 25m.

  37. Keyser

TitsMcGee – Lol nah it’s genuinely because you don’t seem to have a fucking clue.

“because you know you leave the door open to saying there is no right answer because it’s all opinions.”

Of course it’s about opinions, you say it’s not about claiming ‘endless funds’, or about pleading poverty. Your grand idea amounts to ‘Pay them what they want, 23m – worth it, 25m – worth it, 27m – Pay the money, 29 – Worth it, 32m – Omg such value, fuck he’s awesome, can’t believe we missed out.

There’s no rhyme or reason to your argument, it’s basically unless we match their valuation and get the player we’re a fucking shambles.

“we don’t have endless amounts of money but then justify passing on a player that would have been at least 15m cheaper.”

Who cares if he’s cheaper hasn’t it been about value you nutter ? unless you think Suarez isn’t a much better player ? It doesn’t matter if he’s 15m cheaper, all that matters is how good is he for price we’re paying.

Simple question why is Suarez at a higher valuation if Higarwen was the better option ?

  38. Nasri's Mouth

    @ikon

Ok, so we can’t compare Suarez with Michu because Michu is worth a lot less. That’s great logic.

And yes, Suarez has scored some stunning shots, but he’s missed a lot more than maybe he should

Notice I used the word maybe, because I’m prepared to admit that possibly at Arsenal he’ll get more time on the ball, it wont be such a one man show that it is at LFC, and therefore he’ll be more efficient, but the jury is out IMO.

  39. ikon

    Nasri’s mouth.

There are ways to look at it. Higuain is no doubt a classy finisher.. but his lack of importance in his team is a high negative compared to Suarez being the focus of his team. If you have a striker who is believed to be as potent as Higuain, why would you not have him instead of Benzema who probably has a less conversion rate than him??

I see no striker in the world, bar Falcao maybe who would suit our system more than Suarez for his all round capabilities.

  40. nuudles

@NM, I agree, I would hope the argument is as follows: playing for Lpool, there is quite often nothing on so he has to shoot even if it is speculative. Hopefully for us he would be a lot more efficient, that said, if he can stay at 0.7 goals / game then I do not care much how many shots he takes 🙂

  41. Bergkamp63

    Radio RaheemJuly 24, 2013 15:08:24
There is a reason Lewandowski is still at Dortmund and it has nothing to do with clubs not bidding high enough for him. Guess? 2 words starts with B and ends in H

Benson & Hedges ? Your’e right, he won’t get anywhere smoking those, he should try Lucky Strike !

  42. ikon

    @Nasri’s mouth

“Ok, so we can’t compare Suarez with Michu because Michu is worth a lot less. That’s great logic.”

No, you missed the point. Making Michu available for 15 million now will not make Arsene Wenger go for him. Because he is a one season wonder, he is not that quick. Price tags are culmination of consistent out-performances compared to peers. And hence we take it as a thumb rule.

Price tags are price tags because they are calculated from intrinsic value of form, skills, temperament, fitness and experience and so on. So we have Falcao, Cavani, Higuain etc. in those brackets…. not Michu.

Secondly the main point is Swansea have a much much better midfield than Liverpool

  43. Keyser

“yes you can try to reach a middle ground, but ultimately you pay what the seller think a fair value, just like when we sell players e.g Adebayor 25m.”

No, ultimately you pay what you can afford to, or you think will help meet your goals.

Citeh paid that for Adebayor, because it weakens us and they can afford to take the hit, we paid 6m for Adebayor and he ended up scoring 30 goals in a season, how many players can we buy for 25m and then sell on for 6m without it affecting us.

  44. samsenal

londongunner c’mon your comparisons are unfair, yeah each of those players displayed some characteristics on occasion…but Suarez is a serial cheater and a serial diver. And he bites. HE BITES.

He calls for handballs every time a ball hits a defender, but not instinctively like many players do, before playing on….he goes mental and chases the ref pointing at his arm. And he does it all the time.

Yeah, Pires hit the deck too easily, but he didn’t do it anywhere near as often Suarez and he certainly didn’t screw his face up and writhe around so theatrically.

You can’t call Henry a cheat because of that one instinctive handball against Ireland. You just can’t.

You can call Suarez a cheat though. And his language and behaviour towards Evra was not meant to be friendly, he was using Evra’s skin colour against him.

Are you actually Suarez in disguise?

  45. Nasri's Mouth

    @nuudles

I can just imagine his thinking.

“Right, I’ve got the ball, I’m 30 yards from goal, the angle is tight, there are 4 defenders in the way, but hey, wait a minute Stewart Downing has a free shot on an empty goal if I pass to him”

“…woah, that was close, I hit the post!”

And yeah, if he scores 0.7 goals a game I’ll be very happy as long as Walcott, Cazorla et al aren’t compromised too much

  46. Bergkamp63

The problem has been made worse by IG opening his big fucking mouth and saying we have £70m to spend, so now every player we go after is suddenly worth £10m extra !

  47. Romford Pele

    SHITTTTTT

BBC say we can hold talks with Suarez but are holding out for £50m. That sounds too fishy for me. Why would you allow a striker to hold talks with a club if you’re not planning or accepting.

  48. TitsMcgee

“My point is I would rather have a striker who shoots a lot (Suarez makes 4.33 shots per game on ave compared with Hig @ 1.71) and therefore has a worse shots/goal ratio but a better goals/game ratio as that is the crucial metric:

    Hig: 48 shots (31 on & 17 off), 16 goals in 28 games (i.e. 0.57 goals/games)”

Hig is also option # 2 (at best) taking shots at Madrid. He is far from the only option they have.

At Liverpool it’s Suarez and then Sturridge and that’s pretty much it. Higuain has superstars surrounding him.

Higuain also makes goals out of half-chances similar to RVP so I’m sorry comparing him to OG is/was a bit of a stretch.

I would take Suarez over Higuain in a perfect world but I rather have Higuain than nobody and I don’t think we’ll be getting Suarez.

  49. londongunner

I am mixed race if suarez called me negrito, I’d call him a wetback or a spic, i’d then kick his ass settle like a man, rather than all this condensing holier than thou attitude

are any of you from Uruguay?

any of you brought up as an impoverished peasant basically in a rural ghetto in a tough neighbourhood?

, brought up with 6 other siblings fighting everyday for the bare necessities of life?

anyone abandoned by their father when their 12 leaving their broken family further impoverished

have any of you been brought up in a place where everyone uses the term negrito and that its socially acceptable that it is the norm, standard behaviour,

just because he uses the term negrito doesn’t mean he hates all blacks and wants to exterminate the black race or even that he thinks their inferior

get of your high horse guys none of you in your lovely western lives have had to live through an inch of the hardships he has.

because of the huge challenges he has had to overcome he has had to ruthless, he hasn’t had the cosy pc life you guys have had

suarez is an inspiration a hero!

  50. Alfygun

Everywhere I turn I hear how badly the club is run, how we the fans are being duped to renew our tickets . The fact is I totally agree with 95% of it, but nothing is ever going to change unless a large enough group of fans can stand together and boycott a game or maybe the Emirates cup . They will only take notice when they see reduced attendance or revenue.
We are not demanding that we win a trophy we just want to be serious contenders and see that OUR! money that we pour into the club year after year is used to improve the club we love, especially as a lot of people can ill afford the prices but due to a genuine love for the club pay the highest prices around.
We want a bit more respect and transparency. I think we deserve that !
PS why go to the Emirates Cup to see Gonzalo show us what a fantastic striker we missed out on.

  51. gooner87

    ———————————————

He is a left side attacking midfielder. where we play poldi. where we used to play pires

  52. londongunner

vertongen is a brilliant player, seriously good, I was wishing injury on him all last season, his a great defender and even a great attacker, he scores important goals and is brilliant on the ball!

Hate the prick why did he choose Tottenham over us?

  53. N5

London you drama queen, listen to yourself, no none of us did grow up like that but also you know he wasn’t saying it out of respect, stop being a bellend, if he meant it to be nice then why did he get a huge ban even after investigation into the reasons! cheer up princess you’ve lost this one.

  54. sam

Bernard signing will mark the end of cesc dream.
he’s not world class but we don’t care as long as we keep the Little Juda out of our club.

  55. ikon

30 goals in 44 appearances for Liverpool last season
Since joining from Ajax in January 2011 for £22.7m, has scored 51 in 96 appearances
49 goals in 48 games for Ajax the season before joining Liverpool
31 goals in 62 appearances for Uruguay

I don’t know how people can’t be happy with this bid.

Liverpool will be mad not to accept a 42 million bid. They will loose their only goal scorer for 6 games, and if they sell they can get two good players with that money.

  56. mofaya

DOES THE 40 MILLION POUND BID FOR SUAREZ MEAN THAT THE ‘RESTRICTIVE’ ARSENAL WAGE STRUCTURE HAS CHANGED? TO WHAT?

  57. N5

mofaya it’s not his wage so I don’t understand your question? what do you think Suarez will want to be paid a week?

  58. samsenal

LondonGunner, I can’t imagine he was struggling to pay the plane ticket over to Holland.

He has spent enough time in Western Europe to know what is and isn’t tolerated. have you read what he said to Evra? Seriously, have a look at the FA report.

I can entertain the idea of “moving on”….hell, if we sign him i’m going to have to….but calling him an inspiration is pure comedy…you’re trolling right? :o)

  59. sam

    Gooner87

It doesn’t matter can we just sign someone better than paulino.
with wenger there is no guarantee you will play where you want.
Bernie boy can defender as well and nacho is out injured ha ha ha

  60. N5

Your right herve he should have offered 50+ straight away and had no wriggle room, anyway I have a few things I’d like to sell you, come and see me, you seem smart!

  61. TitsMcgee

“There’s no rhyme or reason to your argument, it’s basically unless we match their valuation and get the player we’re a fucking shambles.”

We NEVER match anyone’s foooking valuation. That’s the point.

Keep the convenient excuses flowing Keyser.

  62. Bergkamp63

If Suarez decides he wants to leave Liverpool there is no way they are going to try and force him to stay.

£40m is the price, they can take it or leave it. See if Madrid want to increase that offer or let him stay where he is. They are after Bale full stop.

  63. Doublegooner

    Untold Girls:

Some 6th former wants to strangle me ( if he can get his hands on me) lol.

I’ve told him where he can find me every home game or most away games.

He;’s probably get rogered at boarding school most weekends.

  64. Alfie

    “londongunnerJuly 24, 2013 15:59:15

people are hating suarez because he said negrito… which is a term of friendship ”

I want Suarez but lets not be niave. He meant it as a negative racial slur.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is fucking dumb.

  65. samsenal

mofaya, it’s widely reported as £150k per week….probably a figure plucked from thin air. He will certainly be Arsenal’s highest earner.

Just as the transfer fees are massively increasing, so we should start to see the wage ceiling lifted….

    We have more money now.

  66. Keyser

    TitsMcGee – It’s a pretty shit point.

“We NEVER match anyone’s foooking valuation. That’s the point”

Lol how do we manage to buy any players then ?

  67. londongunner

    KEYSER

player valuations aren’t just about a single opinion of a club its about a set of opinions, based on clubs through out europe

for instance cavani is sold for 55 million therefore suarez who is just as good a footballer is worth say 5 to 10 mill less than that (most probably because of his behavioural record)

you can argue all you want its unfair its not right and the sugar daddies of psg have skewed the market but that’s life and that’s capitalism you either compete or you don’t.

  68. Bergkamp63

Who gives a fuck what he said or who he bites ? Are we after a goal scoring machine or another Mother Theresa like Theo Ballsack !

  69. Keyser

Brendan – Louis, Louis, Ohhh, look I like you mate, but don’t call anyone something silly from now on.

Luis – I understand boss, it’s all in the past, won’t do it again.

    *chomp*

Brendan – Wtf is wrong with you Louis ?

Luis – You never said anything about biting anyone.

  70. londongunner

    keyser

we do match players valuations all the time, santos gervino giroud ect

not exactly a stellar bunch, fact is we either compete with the big boys or we go for the cheaper options and we compete with the small boys.

  71. N5

Herve what about ManUre and Cesc then? same thing happening? 25 offered now 30 they will settle around 35! its how transfers are done.

  72. Johnty79

    Nasri
    Feilani
    Begovic
    Williams
    Remy

All players we could have signed. If we signed them we would have made a title challenge and probable finished second.

Instead we will sign Suarez and finish no higher than forth.

    Total mismanagement at the club.

  73. unhappy gunner

    @Sam
Why the fuck is cesc a little judah?? Don’t talk crap. The guy watched as year in year out we got rid of quality players and replaced them with utter shite while Barcelona were widely acclaimed as the best team in the world. . Yes we gave him his big break but he gave us a fair few years too. So your telling me if you had chance to play with some of the best players in the world that you would of turned it down to play with gervinho, shitmakh, diaby, walflop etc. If you want to blame anyone blame wenger. In last 2-3 years we have had 4 first teamers, not reserve players, but first teamers questioning wenger and arsenals ambition. Are they all cunts then? So in 2-3 years time when JW and Zelalem want a transfer to a team that actually wants to win and shows ambition, will they be cunts too?

  74. bishop

Please can we just buy someone please for God’s sake…
Can they just hear my cry

First time poster been reading for years. I so much love legrove.

  75. Keyser

Forget about the moral implications, if he’s missing 10 games a season because he’s a complete mong, then yeah we should care.

I don’t think he’s racist, I think he’s a bit of a loon with a supposed valuation of 50m and wages of over a 100k a week, he’s like a far more talented version of Bendtner, but with less intelligence.

  76. Bergkamp63

Wait til he puts in a transfer request and go back with an offer for £25m.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it !

  77. TitsMcgee

“BBC say we can hold talks with Suarez but are holding out for £50m. That sounds too fishy for me. Why would you allow a striker to hold talks with a club if you’re not planning or accepting.”

This is my point. Now let’s say they actually mean this then that means we now have to shell out 50m for him because there ain’t nobody else.

Maybe Wenger knows for sure Suarez will come and he’s confident but if he shells out 50m for a player I’d be shocked.

  78. N5

Ha ha, nice one Londongunner, your being the warrior now, I’m not in N5 mate Arsenal are, but if you fancy a ride down to the aylesbury estate I’ll gladly meet you! but I’m assuming your around 15 offering someone out for saying your a bellend if you believe Suarez was being friendly to Evra, grow up you melt!

  79. Johnty79

Suarez will add almost nothing to our team infant I bet we will be around top untill he starts playing after his ban. Cazorla, poldolski will be completely cancelled out.

Please don’t except Liverpool this deal may cripple arsenal for ever. And Bernard??? When will wenger learn..to small to weak will flop in the premierleague.

  80. HerveDeNerve

    N5

When you walk into a shop and look at a product that you are interested in buying. Are you saying that you walk up to the shop assistant and say i’ll offer you £XYZ for that product?

Or do you ask “How much is it?” and then barter, haggle and decide from there?

  81. jules

    Londongunner

love your 16.20 . bang on mate, no one really knows what and wasn’t said etc and in what context in the build up etc and evra is a little shit anyway! I like your reference to PV , TH14 and Pires too. Would like someone like Suarez as you need a little bit of a nasty streak to win. Dennis B certainly had it when he needed to too!

  82. TitsMcgee

“you can argue all you want its unfair its not right and the sugar daddies of psg have skewed the market but that’s life and that’s capitalism you either compete or you don’t.”

Little Keyser doesn’t seem to grasp this.

fact is your the pussyole because your the person who got rude in the first place over the internet. I know your type, your the type of guy who is all bark and no bite, a bitch in real life who wouldn’t say shit to me. You got rude to me before for no reason on this site, Im not the kind of guy to take disrespect lightly.

  84. N5

Herve are you comparing buying a footballer to buying a toaster?

Or is the product a car because yes I would offer less!

  85. N5

Londongooner, shut up you mug! bark and no bite! ha ha. You’ve got all angry over someone disagreeing with you, someone else called you a dumb cunt to but you seem to have missed that, but I’m not going to even go into the fact you just said pussyole which proves your not out of your teens yet! grow up you clown and move on, your wrong about Suarez and your wrong about me! I’m at the George pub every Arsenal home game drinking with the herd, you really want to act tough online come see me, or shut the fuck up and move on.

  86. TitsMcgee

Lol how do we manage to buy any players then ?

    Your just acting dumb now.

Because they are players nobody else wanted?

    Try harder Keyser.

  87. TitsMcgee

“Tits doesn’t seem to grasp we’re not one of them, doh.”

Because we choose not to be.

    Big difference.

“No player is worth the money”

  88. Keyser

Where would Suarez be in a shop ? Is it a petshop ?

    Parrot – Negrito, negrito, negrito..

Owner – He’s not racist, he’s from South America, what do you expect ?

  89. Kiyoshi Ito

Got to say..Mr Wankstein,IG,SS& Co,are literally taking the proverbial piss..

I’ve never seen anything like it,in my life..
I am literally in fits of laughter..

These guys, have taken the art of spin,piss-taking to a different level..

I’m telling you this guys are a bunch of geriatric scoundrels..

    It’s absolutely bloody hilarious…

This is by far,the best transfer summer ever by Mr Wankstein& Co,for just pure mind-f**king the fans..

    Every year,they take it up a notch…

    2010/11
Mr Wenger:”We can’t be regarded as a big club,if we sell Cesc & Nasri”

    2 weeks later,Cesc& Nasri sold..

    2011/12
Mr Wankstein sells RVP to ManUre..Despite statements from AW during the season, that we are confident RVP will not be sold..

    Several months later RVP sold..

    May 2012/13
Finish 4th by a point..AW & the team celebrate as if winning the EPL..

    June 2013
IG comes out with “Escalation in financial power” statement..& believes we can afford £200p/w wages& a £25 million type player..

Day 65 (after the 2011/13 season has finished..)

    Linked with
    Jovetic
    Bender
    Rooney
    Cesc
    Fellaini
    Bernand
    Higuain &
    now Suarez..

    So far no signings..
But now we have increased our bid from £40,000,000-£40,000,001(i.e. by a £1),which apparently triggers a clause, allowing us to talk to him..& everyone else..!!

So Arsenal have simply raised their bid by a £1,which now entitles all other suitors to begin talks as well..

Another club, raises their offer..Mr Wankstein& Co fold and disappear..

Is this the Mata deal,of this year??!!

    This is pure comedy gold!!

  91. HerveDeNerve

    N5

Yes, wonderful negotiating tactics indeed which has resulted in an American billionaire publicly asking whether the board of Arsenal FC are smoking weed.

    It’s embarrassing.

  92. N5

Herve I agree with you mostly on this point, my point was more you can’t just go steaming in with your top offer, no club does and that is just the silliness of this market, if it was as simple as ask how much, they say a price and you pay it, all business would be so much easier, but very few clubs seem to work like this. As I said look at ManUre and Cesc. Same thing.

  93. londongunner

    N5

nar your the pussy, and I have taken offence because this is the second time you have done this

ps im not gonna meet you when your with a crowd of your lads, you think im a dumb naïve cunt

lol meet me on on one you absolute pussy or are you afraid of meeting a 19 year old by your self hahahhah, man or mouse?

ive called you out for being rude cunt and now your afraid to settle it

  94. TitsMcgee

Guys like Keyser always think along the lines of:

    Player X worth = 25m
    Arsenal/Wenger’s opinion = 23m

Lose the player to a team that paid 26m?

    “Player X wasn’t worth it at 26m”

“We can’t compete with the City’s and the Chelsea’s”

//Forgetting to mention that we could have easily EASILY paid the extra 2-3m for player X”

We are always suspiciously “just short” in our valuation.

  95. arsenal tom

    Vintage/Romford…

the 40m means he has to be told about the bid and i think he can ask to speak to the club which is what they don’t want. He can now go back and say he wants to join us and we have an advantage in that we both officially know the player wants out.

I imagine we’ll offer a few quid more probably in add on’s and maybe front load the payments so they can get a decent replacement in.

Hopefully, they’ll use the cash to nick Soldado before he joins the yids just after they’ve sold Bale to Madrid.

  96. Keyser

TitsMcGee – You seem to know more about how I value a player than you do yourself.

Fucking hell, can’t you just put in the same effort for your own thoughts.

How do you judge value ?

  97. N5

Ha ha, I knew you were a teen, it was so obvious! you called me out for a fight because I was rude! hahaha wow, just wow! welcome to le grove son, you said the word spick and thought that was fine, you said Suarez being racist was pretty much ok and your mitigation for that was because you are mixed race! I said don’t be a bellend (for making excuses for him) and you want to get hurt for that, move on and grow up kid, your just out of school!

  98. Nasri's Mouth

A football player isn’t a can of beans with a barcode. He’s an individual multi-million commodity. Of course there is negotiation on price.

  99. TitsMcgee

“How do you judge value ?”

Open ended question that will be down to personal opinions.

i.e a question with no right or wrong answer.

How about you tell us what players are worth their price tags since you seem to think that nobody is worth the money.

    How about that?

  100. DUIFG

If Suarez pushes this now and we chuk in an extra 3 mil then we could have him by morning. We can then hopefully put the naysayers to bed for a couple of years thank god.

  101. unhappy gunner

    @Kiyoshi
Yet people still fall for it year in year out. The fact that cesc is thinking about going to united says it all for me. He would rather play under a manager who has never won anything or even managed a team in CL , as opposed to playing for his “father” wenger. If that doesnt tell you how shit and clueless wenger actually is, nothing will.

  102. Hunter

Look guys I dont care who the fuck we sign,as far as I am concerned it could be Attilla The Hun and five of his murderous colleagues, but if they can score goals ,defend like tigers and create like picasso I would be Happy.I want to win trophies NOT just get fourth frigging place and qualify for the Champions League.Yes Suarez is an animal but what a player! If he can score us the goals then sign him?or Rooney Or Higuain,i just dont care ,Wenger has made me have no morals anymore,so somebody bring me his head on a plate.IF and thats a BIG IF we end up signing no-one decent before the season I suggest we take a pigs head to our first home game and throw it on the pitch as to show our disgust or we chop wengers head off and use that instead!!

  103. londongunner

mate im Jamaican Chinese and Spanish and irish

so im 19 and your 30 arguing with me so what does that make you?
your a fool man, Im being who I am reaaacting to your initial immature name calling your acting like a teenager yourself, if Im like you when im 30 I’ll be an embarrassing pathetic guy, your 30 yet you get rude to people more than once on online websites, you don’t try and debate and disagree you result to name calling and when I confront you your to scared to meet up and settle things, Ive been raised around violence that’s how I settle things that’s why I understand suarez. Your some 30 your old man whose afraid to meet up with me. lol coward.

I honestly thought you were younger than me, I am embarrassed for you. so what time what place ect?

  104. N5

Unhappy has Cesc said he would go to United then? I didn’t read anything anywhere about that, only that he want’s to stay in Barca.

  105. Jeff

So we’ve now earned the right to talk to Suarez with our £40m+1 bid. Suppose, for the sake of argument, that Suarez and AFC agree personal terms and everything else (which is extremely doubtful). All that’s left is for Liverpool to agree.

But they’ve already said they won’t sell below £50m. Does anyone here think we will bid £50m? Of course not and I don’t think Suarez is worth £50m anyway.

So, the Suarez debacle will go the same way as all the other high profile links – dead in the water, just like Arsene knows and wants.

  106. Keyser

TitsMcGee – You’re the one creaming yourself over what Napoli paid for Higwin, and you keep dodging the question, actually any question.

  107. Geoff

London, N5 stop the sabre rattling, this is a football blog. We don’t do threats here. Doesn’t matter who said what draw a line under it.

Aim your anger at the people that deserve it, the management!

  108. TitsMcgee

This “we aren’t Chelsea” excuse with regards to spending is just convenient scapegoating.

    We aren’t Chelsea?

No sheeet. I wonder if it was the fact they wear blue and we wear red?

We aren’t Chelsea in that we aren’t going out and signing several players on 30-40 million in one window but it has no bearing on matching another teams valuation of a player when we can clearly afford him if we offered up just a bit more money.

“We aren’t Chelsea” is just more convenient excuse making.
