Chamberlain should have been with the U21s | Higuain lady works in London | Arsenal / Ivan Q&A

by & filed under News Review.

Transfer stories are the same as yesterday, bar a story from a certain publication trying to fob off a photoshopped image of Fellaini in an Arsenal shirt as real. I know a click isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but when your sole objective is driving revenue from dishonest reporting rather than delivering something of interest to fans… well, it hacks me off. The same site declared later that day we were in advanced talks for Ba…

Anyway, I watched some under 21 games yesterday. I caught the highlights of Italy smashing Israel. Plenty of bad keeping in that game. Plenty of classy looking Italian players as well.

Then I jumped on board Spain vs Germany in the evening. So much talent in the Spanish squad. Alcantara impressive player, Isco looks and absolute superstar and the striker from Benfica whose name alludes me looked handy as well (Rodrigo?). Ginter, of Frieberg started the game at the back. He looked pretty handy playing at centre back, keeping Spain at bay… Kind of. Only a late goal by Madrid’s super sub Morata split the sides (after Ginter moved into midfield)… yet more bad keeping at fault.

What I found I interesting was the depth these sides had. Most players were first team for their clubs. Most were sublimely talented and they all worked really hard for the cause. For me, Chamberlain should have been out there. We’ve a fairly snobby approach to this tournament which is pretty weak considering how bad we are as a nation when it comes to international football.

I can understand dropping a player like Jack when he’s dropped 50 senior games… but not Chamberlain… He’d have benefitted hugely from being the star. Just my opinion of course… I might even have thrown in Gibbs if I was safe in the knowledge he wouldn’t explode into a puff of dust through his mammoth 29 game season.

This evening there’s a Q&A with Ivan Gazidis at the club which I’m hoping to get to. I’m not sure how this one is going to pan out. The questions are prevetted, which gives room for slick answers. The reason the club give is that when the questions are thrown open to the floor, things get pushed in one direction… which is true. You let a group of fans ask questions they haven’t thought about and you’d be amazed at the level of question thrown out. Gazidis does normally take a few unscripted questions, so let’s hope it’s a productive evening… and it’s important to remember that I think only Everton have supporters meetings with the CEO (which, after the fans leaked off the record details, the club cancelled).

I’m sure most of the focus will be around players and who we’re bringing in. I’d imagine he’ll tell us the same things he’s been telling the press… we’ll go big if the right player agrees to join. I did read somewhere that Higuain’s girlfriend works for the BBC in London… which might be a sway over Juventus. We’ll see though… like I’ve said all summer, we’re not selling a finished product, we’re selling a dream. A dream that will come with a lot of cash. But a dream all the same.

Right, not a lot else to report on. Enjoy the day and tune into my Twitter feed this evening for some serious live tweeting. Click follow below to join the party.

  1. kiblib

I think Chambo would have done well but I think the real problem is that no one in their right mind would want to play for Pearce.

  2. Arsenal 1886-2006

Good job england weren’t in the same group as Spain, Holland and Germany, it could have been disastrous for the youngsters.
It shows that without the foreign talent in this country we would near enough be a footballing backwater.

  3. andy1886

Has anything useful ever come from an IG Q&A?

More sound bites. I’d rather they were spending time on transfers than wasting it on this PR lark. Will we actually sign anyone before August?? Would anyone be really surprised if we didn’t?

  4. Arsenal 1886-2006

Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that he expects to leave the club within a fortnight after holding talks with five-or-six different clubs.

Is that football clubs or nightclubs?

  5. Romford Pele

    1886,

Probably nightclubs. He said the same thing last season. May be a struggle to shift him methinks – especially with his wages.

  6. bnsb

Do night clubs pay that well? If yes many footballers will have an alternative to talksport and hollywood

  7. Bergkamp10

    I would yes
we will 100% sign — that i have no doubt!
you just hope it is more the fellaini’s than the fletcher’s
    the rooney’s than the rodwell’s
and the higuain’s than the holt’s

    but we will see…….

  8. andy1886

Can’t help thinking we helped screw up Bendtner. First massaging his ego, then playing the guy on the wing FFS! About as much sense as using Santi as a CB. Maybe if he’d have been handled better we could have had a decent squad player (at least as good as OG I would’ve thought). Yeah the guy is a bit of an idiot, but AW has some responsibility too.

  9. Romford Pele

    1886,

Shame indeed. His over-inflated ego didn’t help. And at a time when RVP left, he could’ve stayed and given it a real go to be the team’s number one striker.

  10. Nasri's Mouth

    @andy1886

There should be time to do both. I like the fact that Gazidis will spend time with the fans. In an age with fans are becoming customers, clients more and more every season, it’s nice that the CEO of Arsenal takes time to talk to the fans. Even if it’s scripted to a lesser or greater degree it’s still something that very few other clubs do.

  11. Arsenalone

    Romford

Bentdner arsenal no1,the mans a shit excuse of a player,he’s a championship player at best.

Even chamakh is better than bentdner.

In fact bender is one of our worst ever strikers.

    IMO

  12. Nasri's Mouth

Bendtner’s got an ego problem. With the right application he could be a decent squad member for us, but that’s never going to happen now.
There was nothing wrong with playing him on the wing, he wasn’t good enough to lead the line on his own for us, and pandering to already overconfident player would have made things worse rather than better

  13. Romford Pele

    Arsenalone.

In no way is Chamakh better than Bendtner, the former’s inability to hit a ball cleanly was laughable. I mean what striker can’t shoot properly. Anyway, they’re both bad and neither are good enough. The sooner we discard of both, the better. I have no sympathy for Bendtner either. He hasn’t exactly proven himself in his last two loans. And the dude is now 24. Please get rid ASAP.

  14. jules

    bnsb

Apparently his girlfriend has a job with the BBC in London so the hope is Hig will favour a move to London to be with her and their child . Hope so!

  15. N5

Arsenalone, Chamakh was great until he come to us, so saying worse then Chamakh wouldn’t have been a bad thing, we ruined him! NB showed huge promise too and wasn’t coached/utillised correctly and now what we have is an expensive wart!
Worst striker? can you clarify, do you mean for us, the premiership or everywhere? Because I can list you 3 or 4 worse that played for us, let alone everyone.

  16. gilo

Romford – I agree (I think), in general but I’ve never seen a professional footballer hit a ball less cleanly than Gervinho (including Chamack!)

  17. Ian Hawthorne

Although there are loads of rumours going around about millions of players that Arsenal are after , the essential purchase is HIGUAIN. So get him NOW and go for any others later

  18. bnsb

    .. we ruined him

A good number of overseas players find it difficult to adapt to the speed of EPL on a consistent basis. Chamakh was good at harrying and winning ball back in first few games. Then he faded away.

  19. Josip Skoblar

An anecdote. Rafa Nadal – who won his 8th final at Roland Garros yesterday – is none other than the nephew of Miguel Angel Nadal who played for Barca and Spain in the 1990s and early 2000s. At the age of 36, Nadal was still playing for the national team (2002 WC) and he retired aged 39. He was one of the Spaniards who missed a penalty against England at the 1996 Euros penalty shootout in Wembley. He was a solid defender and I remember him well. Until yesterday, I did not know that that both men were related.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_%C3%81ngel_Nadal

  20. Romford Pele

Gilo – they’re both as bad as each other! The worrying thing is that teams like Galatasary and Besiktas are willing to pay £10m for him. Saying that, I don’t think Gervinho is the worst player, he’s just not cut out for a team looking to win major trophies.

  21. Romford Pele

We ruined Chamakh?! No way. The dude was already moaning about suffering from burnout in December of the season we bought him. Good riddance.

  22. gilo

Romford – agreed. I remember thinking in that first game at Newcastle that he looked brilliant – very dynamic – but i guess it was just the shock of the new and unexpected.

I’d not think twice of taking £10m for him

  23. Rhys Jaggar

Here are some rigorous, well-thought-through questions to ask Gazidis:

    1. If the money to spend is available, if it doesn’t get spent and if no trophy is won in 2014, will you and the manager resign?
    2. If not, will you refuse to renew the manager’s contract?
    3. If you renew the manager’s contract, what bonus will you demand for no trophies?
    4. What outgoings per week do you consider to be acceptable on players who don’t play for the first team, won’t play for the first team but are paid too much to play for any other first team until such a time as their contracts run out?
    5. If the answer to that is > £100k a week, will you be resigning if that figure is not reached within 12 months??
    6. Given the huge increases in revenue coming, will you be reducing ticket prices rather than pay mediocre players even more??
    7. If not, why not??
    8. Do you think that the stadium atmosphere would improve if the capacity of the ground were increased to 70,000 through the introduction of two standing areas behind each goal??
    9. Will you confirm that it is a sacking offence for Arsene Wenger to manipulate squads and careers to benefit the French national side at the expense of those perceived to be major competitors in Euro/World Cup tournaments?
    10. Why was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain given a large pay rise in the summer of 2012 when he was not of sufficient maturity/quality to become a regular starter in 2013?
    11. Why was Johann Djourou given a contract extension?
    12. What do the last two questions suggest about Arsene Wenger’s capabilities as a financial manager????

  24. Arse&Nose©

Ivan is the master, he will have everyone coming out of the meeting with a massive smile on their face only a few hours later they will all realise they got screwed in the backside by the smooth talking politician.

  25. Moray

Rhys…more accurately “who the fuck negotiated an automatic raise for Djourou without even basing it on performance or appearances? The same person who sent him on loan at the end of that same season?

  26. N5

OK possibly I over exagerated saying we ruined him, but we didn’t manage Chamakh correctly. The first 6 months he was great, the next sh!t and that doesn’t just happen. Let’s say the decline was like Reus and he was homesick I can understand that but when it’s attitude like Arshavin then someone isn’t managing these players correctly.

  27. Romford Pele

N5 – Arshavin was workrate, that’s always his issue. Applying yourself should never be a problem. I always got the impression that he thought he was above tracking back. That should never be the issue.

  28. goona

Chamak played well from the start in my opinion, until Bendy/RVP came back from injury and he was immediately dropped by Wenger…the rest is history

  29. N5

Agreed Romford, that’s why I’m worried about Lucas, because he seems very similar to Arshavin in that respect.
    .

  30. Arse&Nose©

Arshavin faded because the PEDs he was on in Russia wore off.

Chamakh lost form after a tabloid found about his 4-way gay romp in las vegas, he took out a super injunction and lost focus.

  31. ram

what if we got fellaini what would happen to little jack wilshere? maybe back to bolton for good? i hope carzola gets the no.10 shirt next season hes a real playmaker not a media made one

  32. Nasri's Mouth

Still it’s nice to see that once Chamakh was released from the strains of being under Wenger and being on loan at West ham he immediately improved and showed what he can really do…

  33. N5

Chamak played well from the start in my opinion, until Bendy/RVP came back from injury and he was immediately dropped by Wenger…the rest is history

    ——————-

That’s what my thoughts on it were too, I thought he was doing really well until he was dropped, no rotation, no game time, no confidence, AW needs to be held responsible for that, I don’t agree Chamakh is at fault for the massive decline in his ability.

  34. Josip Skoblar

    Moray
You mean, it’s a family atavism? Ha! Ha! Seriously, there’s a strong possibly there. Those were the days. He played professional football until 39…

  35. bnsb

Here are some not-so-well-thought out replies
    1. If the money to spend is available, if it doesn’t get spent and if no trophy is won in 2014, will you and the manager resign?
No, both of us love this club too much..(too long, abbreviated for the sake of brevity)
    2. If not, will you refuse to renew the manager’s contract?
We already have renewed his contract for another five years. Arsene wants to beat Fergusson’s record as longest serving manager.
    3. If you renew the manager’s contract, what bonus will you demand for no trophies?
    Silly! Next question please.
    4. What outgoings per week do you consider to be acceptable on players who don’t play for the first team, won’t play for the first team but are paid too much to play for any other first team until such a time as their contracts run out?
    Read answer to q.3 please
    5. If the answer to that is > £100k a week, will you be resigning if that figure is not reached within 12 months??

I have already answered that question. I am here for long haul.
    6. Given the huge increases in revenue coming, will you be reducing ticket prices rather than pay mediocre players even more??
    No
    7. If not, why not??
We are a class club ( translation:we don’t want moaners from Le-Grove attending on the cheap. Never!)
    8. Do you think that the stadium atmosphere would improve if the capacity of the ground were increased to 70,000 through the introduction of two standing areas behind each goal??
If we can 10,000 more season tickets why not?(Did any one else hear slurp?)
    9. Will you confirm that it is a sacking offence for Arsene Wenger to manipulate squads and careers to benefit the French national side at the expense of those perceived to be major competitors in Euro/World Cup tournaments?

The french are capable of self destruct, remember the name Domenech?
    10. Why was Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain given a large pay rise in the summer of 2012 when he was not of sufficient maturity/quality to become a regular starter in 2013?
We came to know of Start Pearces cunning plan to to take him to Euro undr 21. We fast tracked him to first team. (Muahaha)
    11. Why was Johann Djourou given a contract extension?
We had two options Djorou and Squilacchi.
    12. What do the last two questions suggest about Arsene Wenger’s capabilities as a financial manager????

You are being disrepectful. Arsene is the football manager, I am the financial manager. (Ooops!)

  36. N5

Polidi Romford, he seems very lazy when it comes to tracking back, it may just be my perception and factually rubbish as I’ve never checked his stats.

  37. Romford Pele

Oh Poldi. To be honest i’m not his biggest fan. Most Gooners are behind him because of the pedigree he came with, But I just don’t rate him as a player. Statistically he looks good but I see him every weekend at N5 and he flatters to deceive. He’s such a limited player and offers nothing in terms of creativity. I thought he could make a better ST but i’m still unsure of that front. To be fair he probably works harder than Arshavin though that’s not hard.

  38. Josip Skoblar

I watched Brazil-France yesterday (3-0). These are two very average sides. The scoreline is flattering to Brazil who had almost no scoring opportunities apart from the three goals. Brazil are not going to the WC with a strong and confident team. I would not spend big bucks in Neymar. He is not my kind of WC player. It is a matter of opinion and I may be wrong, but I think that there are better and more consistent “WC players ” at the moment. The French played a younger and weaker side. Not great. I really liked Cabaye (who is going to ManU?) and Sakho who had a great game. The lad is a beast. He is out of favour at PSG, so why not go for him to strengthen our defence?

  39. N5

Same as me Romford, I’ve been going for 31 (I’m 34) but season ticket holder for 16, this year is my 16th. I’m right next to the away fans. Did you renew this year? I don’t think I could give mine up now, I’m institutionalised!

  40. Romford Pele

    N5,

I have renewed mate – call it delusion or whatever you like but i’m hooked! I sit East Stand upper tier.

  41. the mighty karim

    Hi folks ,
Chamack scored goals on a regular basis until RVP came back and Marouane got the axe, never saw him again, apart from Reading…

France had such a poor second half Vs Brazil, I even thought we would win at half time.

Sakho is a sure shot, Josip…

  42. nepGunner

    I think I’m tired of reading 3 things almost everyday;

    1. We are somehow linked with Hig, Rooney, Cesc, Jovetic, Fellaini, this, that and some kids we have never heard of or know much about of
    2. “Sign X, Y and/or Z” are we are sorted (including my own comments!)
    3. Wenger / IG / SK Out

    When the reality is:
    1. We will sign sod all bar the Hig in terms of players with known reputation and then make up the numbers with kids & basement bargains going with our recent trend.
    2. It doesn’t matter how much we rant or plead to sign X, Y. or Z players; at the end of the day its Wenger who decides that – even IG has put that on him. And we all know how he likes to “unearth” gems. All we can do is hope & pray that he opts for realism and not fanaticism this time around.
    3. NO, they are NOT going anywhere until Arsenal FC is a profitable & lucrative business. So lets stop this relentless outcry – at least in forums like Le Grove where such pleas are understood but then it will never be heard/understood by the people with actual executive power to do so.

I think, I’ll just wait and see what happens instead of increasing my BP everyday. And, if sod all happens even until after August 31, I’ll quietly wait for a chance to throw a saucy margarita pizza flat on the face of IG or Wenger or Kroenke! Save your health & energy Le Grovers – but I know you’ll do what you want anyways 😉 So, keep up the lively banters!

  43. N5

Amen on point 3 nep that and we should have come fifth plus cheering on other teams, they wouldn’t and are not going anywhere!

  44. mystic

Romford, it is a bitch to drop but I did so at the end of Arsenal’s time at Highbury. Bloody awful on the first Saturday of the following season, I was clock watching and thinking about a last minute dash, eventually it got too late and I finally manged to start to unwind (though I the game on the radio at full blast to try and rekindle the atmosphere!).

Got easier after that – though the fact I live so far away might have helped minimise my addiction (I still get to a few games and watch every other one either on TV or the internet – the delusion hasn’t dissipated completely).

  45. ram

all i said what would happen to wilshere if we got fellaini? and i think carzola should get the the no.10 shirt coz hes a real playmaker

    Pedro

You have done so well posting for so long without Geoff capping in. I have been with this blog for more than 4 years and we normally enjoyed the contrast of posts and ideas. What’s up with Geoff? Are we not entitled to know? Is everything Arsenal done in secret including blogs? Update us please!!

    Arsenal 1886-2006June 10, 2013 09:35:37
Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that he expects to leave the club within a fortnight after holding talks with five-or-six different clubs.

Is that football clubs or nightclubs?

I’ll think you’ll find it’s Golf Clubs, it’s now the only place he can wear his great big pink clown boots and go unnoticed, the fucking melt.

  48. andy1886

CG – I think there’s a gagging order in place, several of us have asked where Geoff went (and why) but we’re still none the wiser.

  49. bnsb

i think Higuain’s lady favours the Old lady..we can never be sure

Thanks, No problem, that means Higuin’s also favours old lady! oh oh!!

  50. andy1886

Ivan had Geoff tied up in the depths of the Grove and Pedro has to say nice things now or Geoff gets another night with Chris Waddle and a jam jar full of viagra!!

  51. nepGunner

    N5

Not sure I would have enjoyed finishing below them spuds or seeing Arsenal play Sparta Prague on Thursdays on the Europa League, but if I had a chance to stamp a pizza or a custard pie on these tools’ faces (should they lie to us again), I would definitely seize the opportunity…At least I could sleep well after that 🙂

  52. N5

I agree nep and what a satisfying moment that would be.

Mystic, thanks for posting that to Romford, I considered giving up my season ticket, more on finance rather than morals but imagined it to be much like you just said and wondered how I would get passed that first Saturday. so it’s good to see there is hope 😀

ram, I think Fellani wants to be DM so he shouldn’t effect Jackie! he would effect Ramsay though but only in a good way, Ramsay would have compition and rotation so everyone’s a winner.

  53. Mental Strength

Looking at Spain’s u-21s make you realise they’re going to be dominant for years to come.

    De Gea
    Isco
    Koke
    Munain
    Thiago

And other less exciting but great players.

Look at England you see Henderson, Wickham…Shelvey.

Good times ahead for English football.

  54. N5

It’s bizarre that no one answers where Geoff is, as much as I love Pedro’s posts I did like to read Geoff’s hatred towards everything! he was so humorously angry.

  55. w sussex gooner

Wheres this signing we were promised by arsenal longest 24 on record lol more lies from the spin doctor

  56. PK

Sakho would be a great addition to our squad, could even be a starter right away. Thats one of the players we talked a lot of last summer and back then everyone on legrove wanted that man. So for me that would be a great buy, but i think he would not come on the cheap (15 m minimum). So that means wenger is not even looking that way….

Left footed aswell, replacement for verm if he goes?

  57. Nasri's Mouth

    @PK

I’d suspect Lewandowski won’t move this summer and go for a free next year. Dortmund will try to sell, but player will stick it out.

  58. PK

But the Turkish club’s bid has now nobbats of Manchester United. It reveals Galatasarays president Unal Aysal for Turkish Milliyet.

    – We offered seven million euros for him, but they did not accept. We can not give more than that. We will not follow Nani longer. They want 10 million for him. Therefore, he is not on our transfer list anymore.

10 m euro for nani would be something. we need a real winger

  59. N5

NM I read a similar thing to w.sussex that over the next 48 hours we would be signing someone massive, but I think it was one of those Twitter things that went crazy, I’m not convinced it was from a club source.

  60. Moray

I suppose Geoff was tired of dealing with cunts like us, quibbling every day?

Still, yes, he was looking a bit old by the end. At least now he is out of his misery…

  61. mystic

    According to Sky Ports:
Juventus have been told that Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain is not available until a coach has been appointed. After talking to Real president Florentino Perez, Juve sporting director Giuseppe Moratta said: “Higuain is not on the market for the moment but when a new coach is appointed we will talk again with Real Madrid.”
    ————–
So all the Arsenal talk seems immaterial at the moment – and once he is available, irrelevant!

  62. Nasri's Mouth

    @PK

    lets wait and see.

    @N5

I’d be amazed if the club had something like that. So many potential pitfalls. But now someone uses as evidence of ‘more lies from the spin doctor’

  63. Arsene's Nurse

    ram June 10, 2013 11:37:36

all i said what would happen to wilshere if we got fellaini? and i think carzola should get the the no.10 shirt coz hes a real playmaker
    ——————————————————————————————-
Wilshere will literally drop dead as soon as Fellaini walks onto the Emirates pitch. We would then have to bury him under the centre circle. It’s utterly impossible for Jack AND Fellaini to be in the same 25 man squad. I mean how do you fit 2 players into a 25 man squad?

Wenger must be the most amazing person in the world because he has 3 goal-keepers in the 25 man squad! How does that work? How can he fit them all in? It’s a miracle.

Use your brain for god’s sake.

Modern football, where a top club is in 4 competitions, requires a manager to use more than 11 players, unless of course you are Arsene Wenger or a muppet without a brain. Wenger constantly relies on the same starting 11 plus 1 or 2 benched players. He only rotates when forced to do so through injury. It’s one of the reasons why we can never compete in any competition.

What you do is buy Fellaini (or any other player) and rotate them with another player in that position so they don’t burn out and get injured. You can also chose to play one player or the other due to tactical considerations unless you are Wenger of course. You get the idea.

  64. Moray

mystic, we will pin all our hopes on signing Higuain. When we discover in August, when Real come back to the table, that we can’t get him for a song, then we will be stuck with the ugly girls left at the end of the night…though for us we will be talking them up as usual” “Benayoun is a great team player”, “good to have someone like Bent who is a proven premiership goalscorer” etc etc.

  65. mystic

    Moray
‘…….that we can’t get him for a song,’
    ————————————–
Are you are talking about Barca chasing Higuain for a ‘Song’!! lol
    🙂

  66. Marko

I’d still be surprised he went to Juve. They right now have Matri, Quagirella or whatever his awful name is, Vucinic and Giovinco. They also signed Llorente who I’m sure has some guarentees about playing time and are linked with Jovetic, Tevez, Di Natale and Higuain. Plus and this might be key is the fact that Juve like a number of Italian clubs like to talk rubbish. Last summer they were spouting all the same rubbish they’re doing now were being linked to Cavani this and Di Natale that and they ended up with Bendtner. This summer they’re being linked with spending 20 odd million for Higuain but they’ll end up with a free Llorente and maybe a Tevez for 10 million.

  67. N5

Wilshere will literally drop dead as soon as Fellaini walks onto the Emirates pitch

I don’t normally like sarcasm but that line made me laugh so much.

Its not Pavarotti, it’s someone bigger, it’s Rick Waller superglued to a Jerry Springer shut in! I can’t wait for that shirt to be made available to us.

  68. Radio Raheem

So Dortmund are making a principled stand not to sell Lewandowski this summer to Bayern. This despite the potential loss of €25m in transfer fees.

Lewandowski is in his last year of his contract. Dortmund are, financially, smaller than Arsenal.

    Does this sound familiar?

This is why it is so stupid to extricate the board/Kroenke from Wenger. The guiding principle comes from the top not the other way round. If a man fails to abide by that principle then you’d not expect him to be awarded a new contract would you?

If it is true that Arsenal inserted a 50% sell on clause in Fabregas’ transfer, what did they insert in to Song’s? Hopefully not that he is S.O.R. – Sale Or Return.

Ha ha, yeah no returns, or the “you touched him last” rule as it is officially known.

Sorry mate this is an Arsenal blog, you lost me on the word ‘principled’!!

Ha ha Mystic your on fire today! 😀

I agree completely with Dortmund, they still have a nasty taste in their mouth from the Gotze deal and said one star player was hard to swallow but two is a no chance.

They would rather lose him on a free next year when his contract runs out then sell him now. Good on em’

  73. Keyser

AN – Heh, you’ve mastered condescension, without saying anything much of relevance, like people who mentioned ‘tactics’ without ever bothering to explain what they mean.

  74. nepGunner

Away from the transfer nonsense for a while 😉

Fire brigade phones Arsene Wenger in the early hours of Sunday morning…
“Mr Wenger sir, the Emirates’ is on fire!”
“The cups man! Save the cups!” replies Arsene.
“Uh, the fire hasn’t spread to the canteen yet, sir.”

  75. Keyser

Lewandowski could still be sold, and they have already sold Goetze who probably has a far higher threshold for improvement.

The stupidity of people who believe Wenger controls everything while, an entire board, a CEO on nearly 2 million pounds a year and 2 different Billionaires do nothing but twiddle their thumbs is mind boggling.

  76. Crusaderrabbit

I think at the Q&A tonight Ivan will just reiterate what he’s been saying about us being able to spend big – but I can’t see anything of much significance being said.

I genuinely think there should be a way Arsenal fans from all ends of the pro-Wenger/anti-Wenger spectrum could display their desire for the club to spend properly this summer and on the right players.

Pedro – you work in social media don’t you – surely there must be some kind of viral thing we could do to show how much the fanbase wants them to show some actual ambition, something easy, shareable but most importantly catches the press attention and helps increase the pressure. Who knows if it would work but always think in situations like this we’ll all feel better if we do something to show our frustration that just bitch amongst ourselves. Any ideas?

Never realised how S**t Newsnow is when it comes to stories.
Roald Dahl and Hans Christian Andersen fables seem to have more reality to them.
Truly shocking the standard of journalism these days, and that includes the so called pro’s from the red tops and broadsheets.
Twitter Whores the lot of them.

  78. Radio Raheem

Lewandowski could still be sold but not to Bayern. If he joins Bayern next summet it’ll on a free. The relevant point here is the principle of not selling him to Bayern even with the potential loss in revenue.

Goetze is younger than Lewandowski. That doesn’t necessarily translate to higher threshold or whatever. I’m certain Dortmund will struggle more without Lewandowski than without Goetze.

Besides, Bayern were the only or first club to trigger his release clause. Dortmund could not stop that transfer.

  79. N5

Exactly Radio, that’s why they are refusing to sell Lewandowski to them, 2 star players to their rivals would be madness.

One thing I really like about the German league is how honest it all is, they speak exactly how they find things, I wish our league or to be more critical our team had an ounce of this credibility.

Too right, saying and doing are two different things

Reminds me of a girl in a club asking me if I could make her scream all night so she would never forget me, I told her I could, and when I whipped the bag off my head she screamed all the way to the asylum.

  81. Keyser

“I’m certain Dortmund will struggle more without Lewandowski than without Goetze. ”

    Lol convenient saying that now.

I think both have benefitted massively from the style of play Dortmund employ, but Goetze has more value to a team looking for someone to build an attack around.

You’d have to question why there was a buy-out clause there in the first place, the player enforces it, and I’m guessing it was put in simply to get him to sign his last deal with the club.

He could still go abroad couldn’t he ? Or did they say not to be sold at all ?,

  82. N5

Can I just add to my German honesty comment that, that may only be Dortmund who seem very honest and likeable, I don’t know enough about the others, I’m going basically on Klopp interviews and various other snippets from different levels at the club.

  83. Keyser

I’d say his preference is more money, he’s on 20k a week at a time where his stock is at it’s highest even soo especially soo early in his career, If he doesn’t want to move leagues, leave a country his comfortable with, Munich are probably the only club who could also match what he wants wage wise, but if he’s willing to move abroad he’s probably got a load of options.

  84. N5

He could still go abroad couldn’t he ? Or did they say not to be sold at all ?,

They didn’t comment on anything else, they said the wouldn’t sell to Bayern that is all, they refused to speculate on anything else.

    Keyser

Nah you’re trying to make Goetze look the more valuable player. This is simply not the case. If you have watched Lewandowski then you’ll know he can play, work and score. Goetze isn’t exactly a high scoring midfielder. Whether defending or attacking set pieces Lewandowski is more valuable.

Both benefit from their style of play no doubt. Still doesn’t stop ua seeing who the shinning lights are.

    N5

    Spot on.

  86. GS88

Suprise suprise Jovetic is now linked with Real Madrid. This is what happens when you keep on dithering. It’s not looking good on our other targets as well.

Fellaini – says he wants to stay at Everton.

Higuain – Now I’m learning that Juve have sent club representives out to France to tie up a deal. Very worried that he will choose Juve because of their history and pedigree.

Cesc – I’m hearing that he now wants to stay and fight for his place at Barca.

Rooney – It’s all gone very quiet on him which doesn’t look good.

I don’t think Usamov does or can do anything to influence the way things goes on in the AFC at the moment (he’s not even in the board), besides collecting his dividends being a minority share holder.

However, it is equally stupid to believe Wenger has lesser control with proceedings at the AFC when he is the manager of the team and on £7 Mil a year himself! And with years of parody unfolding every transfer window where he his publicly backed with enough transfer funds only for him to come out with excuses when the window shuts only tells you he refuses to be directed by anyone regarding the “footballing” side of the club.

Lol have you just woken up? You say his preference is money…then go on to suggest he might prefer not to move leagues, country etc.

I think he knows he can choose any club he wants but like I said respected journos like Honigstein are saying his mind is made up on Bayern. He will increase his wages whichever club he moves to. If Dortmund stick to this latest announcement then it will be one of principle. You can’t paint it anyother way.

    There is no complexity here.

  89. GS88

I’m just getting very tired and fed up of picking up papers and looking through the net at non stories about potential targets and nothing is happening. One just gets the feeling that we aint going to sign any big-name players at all.

I posted on here about 1 month ago that we are in for a very disapointing summer and I’ve not seen anything to change my mind. We may just stand by while all of our rumoured targets join our rivals whom have won a multitude of trophies in the 8 barren years that we have not.

  90. Keyser

RR – Lol and what are you trying to do here ? Goetze already moved you couldn’t possibly be certain of anything.

Goetze turned 21 a few days ago, Lewandowski will be 25 in August, Dortmund re-negotiated Goetze’s deal with the buyout clause only a year or so ago.

I think Goetze is a player you can build a team around, whereas Lewandowski is someone who will figurehead an eficient attack, in the long run I think Goetze will be more valuable.

Jovetic wants Juve, but we want Jovetic
Juve want Higuain but also want Tevez
Higuain wants Arsenal but Real want to deal with Juve

Why don’t we cut the crap and just sign the only proven Premiership player in the mix- Carlos Tevez

RR – Munich are the only club in the league that could match what he could get in other leagues and still give him the same shot he wants, they are far and above any other team in the league.

If he doesn’t want to move countries, uproot whatever family he has or the life he’s made for himself in Germany he’d have little option but Bayern. Surely you see the problem there.

  95. GoonerDave

    Radio R –
Those release clauses are not as black and white as people think. Surprisingly, the selling club can normally still block the sale of a player, even when the clause is triggered.
Champ Man and the redtops have made these clauses out to be a lot more legally binding than they are.
Normally, they are simply there to act as a deterrent or a bargaining chip.

  96. Keyser

I think you gave a good reason why Dortmund might have inserted a clause in his contract. Goetze is a player you can build a team around just like Lewandowski. Right now Lewandowski is the more valuable player in my opinion. It’s that simple. There is also stats but there will not be necessary.
My certainty comes from watching Dortmund play without either player. It has happened before you know.
