Arsenal vs Reading: Preview

by & filed under News Review.

Good morning! This post will be brief as I’m between computers. Basically, we’re all very excited about hosting Reading today. We’ve scored a shed load against them this year and we’ve conceded a similar amount. On paper we should be taking them to pieces but we all know that complacency is always our biggest enemy against the smaller sides.

On the injury front, we’ve no Jack Wilshere or Diaby in midfield. That means a likely trio of Cazorla, Rambo and Arteta. Not the most dynamic and not the most physical… but more than capable of keeping hold of the ball and controlling the game.

Up top I’m imagining a trio of Giroud, Podolski and Chamberlain will be the choice. Gervinho might slink into the starting 11, but based on form it has to be the young Englishman. At the back, we’ll likely opt for Fabianski in goal… with Jenks, Koscielny, Mertesacker and Monreal. Hopefully they’ll continue with the form that’s seen them take 2 clean sheets in a row.

Arsenal need to take the game to Reading. It’ll be open, but we need to control possession. They’ll be playing for a new manager today, so we need to be careful… complacency isn’t an option. 3 points is an absolute must.

Anyway, apolgies for the lack of content. Geoff is making a long awaited return to blogging later on this week. Catch you tomorrow!

This should be an open game. And also I think a good game to play Podolski CF.

Pedders o Pedders, the one and only tyrant of the grove blogosphere. Tell me I waited endless hours for this short post? Geoff can’t come back quicker. And btw, what happened to Gambon’s much vaunted guest post? Could it be that you are haggling sign-on-fee ala the old demented one? Good day grovers.

    Pedro
We love you and appreciate your daily post but you should delegate more(just as you suggest Wenger do).
Allow more guest post.. Some comments on here would actually pass for a blog post.

Glad to hear Geoff’s coming back. Le grove isn’t the same without him for me. Cheers to Pedro for fighting the good fight, but I miss the bear’s ruthlessness. He always speaks his mind and never holds back. Gotta respect that.

i feel sorry for daibys injury as a human being but i am happy he wont be wearing arsenal jersey for the next 9 months cos he is too slow and sluggish and careless in our dangerous area with his unnecessary dribles when he should just fast track a counter attack with a killer pass and moreover he has a bad luck aura of the club losing most of the matches when he plays my ideal line up for today will be front three PODOSKI GIROURD CHAIMBERLAIN MIDFIELD TRIO OF CARZOLA ROSISCKY ARTETA BACK FOUR DEFENDERS MONREAL VERMALEEN KOSCHIENY SAGNA BENCH RAMSEY COLEIGN JEKINSON MERTESECKAR GERVINHO ARSHAVIN SCZENNY

whens the last time AA23 played? would like to see him 2day- i could do with a laugh, but seriously i havent seen him play in time. would be good to let him loose late on in da 2nd half.

  8. vicky

Rosicky got to be there in the starting line up………Having both Arteta and Ramsey in the midfield means little creativity and no pace.

  9. Spectrum

Diaby out again. We could have expected that. Some are saying “How could the manager be blamed for his injury ” ? Wenger apologists and the even more rabid supporters of his – the A.K.B.’s – have an almost unique inability for discernment and analysis. Think. Anyone who has been following the Arsenal / Wenger narrative over the years as closely as they should have, will know about Diaby’s appalling record and the manager’s misguided and obsessive faith in him. A faith that as AT dutifully emphasised, has been VERY COSTLY in terms of his lack of playing time and consequent lack of contribution to the team cause. As well as the wasted money on wages which could have been better utilised in strengthening other areas where we are weak* ( *and isn’t that most of the team ? ) It isn’t Diaby’s fault that he’s an injury magnet.

But what those with little insight and perspective ( i.e. all those that still defend him ) fail to see, or REFUSE to see, is that this is another manifestation of the axiom ; ” All roads lead back to Wenger.” Because this situation was clearly FORSEEABLE and therefore PREVENTABLE. It’s a typical example of Wenger’s negligence in putting one of his favourite players ( what – you didn’t know Wenger plays favourites ? ) ahead of the interest of the team as a whole. That my friends, IS negligence. The Senile One first of all should have done his due diligence before he signed Diaby. If you’re going to recruit ANY player you want and need them to be RELIABLE. No-one can see into the future, but a player’s bad injury record should ring alarm bells for any ( sensible ) manager. As it often is an indicator of what is LIKELY to happen later. So why take an unnecessary risk ? Best not to take that risk AT ALL eh ? That was the first mistake he made. Subsequently and predictably* – ( * there’s that word again ) Diaby commenced a long period of sustaining knock after knock, punctuated by repeated sessions of rest and rehabilitation, only to make short lived intermittent returns, culminating in this latest fiasco. During ALL THIS TIME, Wenger kept faith in him, despite everyone but HIM, it seems, clearly seeing that this faith of his was not only misplaced and grossly naive, but irrational to the point of foolishness. How foolish ? Well that came when Our Great Leader had an inspirational thought ; ” I’ll show them all. He’ll come back and prove them all wrong”. And so he waited. And waited. Diaby makes another brief cameo appearance, and Wenger decides he’s shown enough to warrant awarding him a new contract ! Brilliant. Even some of A.W.’s brainwashed disciples had doubts about the wisdom of this move at the time. And so it has proved. As I said ; so predictable, and no surprise to anyone who has been following Arsenal and has studied Wenger’s behaviour and “thought”* patterns. ( *I use the term loosely ). That was his second mistake.

His third mistake was in believing that Diaby was ever much good as a player anyway. I agree with A.T. that he’s lazy, doesn’t work for the team, and despite the rare good game, has proved to be mostly inconsistent, or should that be consistently average. Adding to an already average side made up of players chosen and signed by……yep, that’s right – Arsene Wenger. The negligent part is all the above of course, but THE POINT WE MUST NOT OVERLOOK, is that in being irrationally patient with Diaby, Wenger has recklessly and KNOWINGLY gambled season after season, by indulging him and keeping a spot in the team open for him, when any objective observer with an ounce of common sense could plainly and indisputably see that he is a lost cause, and should have been cut adrift years ago. Especially when you consider how much OTHER deadwood Wenger has accumulated on salaries that HE HIMSELF established and ( still ) controls.

THIS, A.K.B.’s, is why we realists blame Wenger for the farcical saga of Abou Diaby. Wenger is manager. Wenger makes the decisions. As in so many other areas. And when they’re as grossly irresponsible and expensive as this, that blame is entirely JUSTIFIED.

Yet another instance of : ” In Arsene we rust.”

  10. Spectrum

From what I read yesterday, Adkins, the new Reading manager, won’t actually be taking charge until the FOLLOWING game of theirs against Southampton. So we might, MIGHT – escape the “new manager” effect that often revitalises struggling teams. I hope not. Speaking of struggling – we are too, of course. Only in a different context. I’m keen to see what a “new manager effect” would have on US.

An upset would be great today. Fancy losing AT HOME to relegation threatened Reading ? That would give us enough ammunition to castigate Wenger for MONTHS. All for the greater good.

Hurry back, Geoff. Let’s see what he thinks.

    ” In Arsene we rust.”

  11. Nasri's Mouth

I think it could be a hard game today. Reading have a new manager and that normally means their players will be all fired up. Just like a mini cup final for them.

  12. Spectrum

Lodbergkamp – Yes mate. Only because a new blog article from Pedro has just been posted, and I didn’t want my post on Diaby to go to waste by being un-read.

By the way, I hear Diaby is on 50-60 k a week. That equates to 1.8 to 2.1 million pissed against the wall by Wenger and him over the next nine months. And we’re always told that we’re short of funds !

    ” In Arsene we rust.”

‘Wenger warns Arsenal ‘stars’ that how they play till the end of the season will affect how he spend this summer.’

    Again with this.

How incredibly short sighted of a club and a manager on a massive decline. So Ignore the last 8 months, as long as you crawl over the line into the top four then you’re safe.

    Ignore the last 8 years.

Ignore hideous performances from guys like Ramsey who’ve played consistently awful for 2 seasons now.

    Ignore a guy like Diaby, a perma-crock.

Ignore the fact you’re running Wilshere into the ground.

There are just no football men left at this club, at all.

These Arsenal players have played horrendously for the last 20 months, but they can save themselves over the next 8 weeks?

    Ridiculous.

  15. Nasri's Mouth

    @Cesc Appeal

Depends whether he’s already made up his mind and is simply trying to get as much as he can out of his players for the final few games.

  16. Spectrum

Nasri’s Mouth – Speak for yourself. You know full well what I mean, and there are others who feel the same way. Don’t like it ? Fine. Don’t complain when you get served up the same shit on a plate next year and the next. Because unless he goes as a PRIORITY, we’ll have more of the same. Including the fiasco with Diaby. Which, as I said, was totally forseeable and PREVENTABLE.

    ” In Arsene we rust.”

  17. AC Gooner

I have said it a million times,

and I will keep saying it.

Ramsey and Arteta should never play together. It dont fooking work.

    Rosicky

Arteta starts, Ramsey in for him at 60 minutes.

Podolski up front today. After he scores a few let that donkey Giroud in.

Someone on here mentioned AA23. I would love to see him get some minutes but I doubt we will ever see him again this season. Then he will go to Fulham next year and be a revelation.

  18. TitsMcgee

Arsene Wenger “warning” the lads that our last 9 games will help decide his transfer plans.

    Is this man serious?

Year 8 no trophy, 24 points behind United mired in 5th place and our last 9 games(i.e getting back his prized possession of 4th spot) is what will decide his transfer plans.

Not that we obviously should buy because we’re in 5th but because we are almost in 4th.

Threatening his mediocre players with losing their exorbitant salaries.

  19. Evan

Wenger threatening his players, absolute bollocking lie. He loves them and believes in ze qualidee. New signings my arse summer 2013 return of loanees and belief in squad.

  20. Spectrum

It appears Diaby has had 32 injuries to date. Yes, the Dan Smith tackle was bad, and compounded his troubles. But Diaby had a history of niggling injuries BEFORE that. It wasn’t as though his problems started from the Smith challenge itself. And that incident was six years ago ! Can we reasonably expect him to have overcome that by now ? I think we can. Instead, he’s only proved to be more accident prone. Surely now he has to be dispensed with permanently. Divide his number of appearances for Arsenal since 2006 ( 123 ) by those seven years, and it averages out at 17.5 games a season. Is that cost efficient ? I feel sorry for his career, but to still persist with him at Arsenal is rank stupidity.

I know that your dislike of Wenger has overtaken any love of the club, you know the phrase ‘no-one is bigger than the club’ ? Well, in your case it is, Your desire to see Wenger suffer and squirm has become more important than our club succeeding. You’ve become blinded to seeing one man fail. Whether we want him to or not, Wenger wont leave this summer even if we go on and lose the next 9 games.
Idiotic and pathetic to want us to lose a game. Coating it in some flimsy excuse about how it will change things in the future is no better.

A number of posters on here have been over this with you before, including Guns of Hackney. But I’ll tell you this ; I haven’t been “blinded” at all. In fact, I’m in razor sharp focus. You’re right, no-one is bigger than the club. I’ve always said that to the A.K.B.’s also. You’re putting a spin on it.

I’d estimate 80% of our problems originate from Wenger. Not treating the source of the disease, means the pain has spread to the rest of the body. Leaving us debilitated. Want to recover and feel better ? Remove the cause. Wenger not going anywhere soon you say ? Been over that too. For your sake, I’ll say it again – Gazidis has said the only way Wenger will leave the club is IF THE FANS WANT /DEMAND IT, or words to that effect. It’s up to us. The fact it hasn’t happened yet is because we’re far too docile and passive to get off our arses and act. Fan power has removed incumbent managers before and will again. But we’ve got to want it enough. Do you ? Doesn’t sound like it.

Loving the club but disliking the manager is not incongruent. All the “I hope we lose so that Wenger can go” is a symptom of the sense of helplessness that many Arsenal supporters are feeling at the moment. Can anyone imagine a scenario where the club management gives us all the finger and gives Wenger a five year contract extension? Can anyone imagine the level of negativity that we see every day in just about every Arsenal fan site continuing for another 5 years? I know that I would be investing heavily in pharmaceutical companies!

The constant lying at every transfer window, the freezing out of certain players, the blind faith with certain other players, and pleading the case for financial prudence while wasting massive amounts of funds on deadwood are the things that I despise about this regime. I’m afraid that will also become Wenger’s legacy the longer it continues. I can’t get myself to wish losses on the team but I can understand when people do. To me it’s a sign of someone who does love the club but is suffering greatly. Those who chastise these opinions should instead provide alternatives on how to effect change at the club.

Incesc – Would we have got Cazorla if Malaga hadn’t sold him cheap, in a firesale ? I doubt it. And what is the point ( footballing wise ) if we DO make it into Europe ? Haven’t you noticed that we rarely get far when we do ? ‘Oh but we won’t attract world class players.” Newsflash ! – we don’t sign world class players NOW – hellooooooooo !

The only point of getting there is for the board’s benefit – for the revenue ( read ; profits ) that our presence in it ensures. If having a full balance sheet is more important to you than achieving trophies on the pitch – it’s time you reassesed your priorities – and maybe your support. Perhaps accountancy would be more successful for you than football ? Just follow Wenger’s lead. It’s worked for him.

What can I say? Appreciate your stretched the Bear coming back is great news.

All I can say about Diaby is that he’s our Kieron Dyer. If we wasn’t so awash with money we couldn’t entertain the likes of him. But as Wenger has said if we have the money why not? Cunt!

We should be offloading all the hangers on and it’s about time Wenger was a man and admitted he has got things wrong and start to do something about it.

Now we’ve got the Almunia Fabianski goalkeeping situation all over again with Chesney and Fabianski. It’s like the carry on films. Comedy gold. The answer is to find one capable keeper out of the many out there, not switch constantly between shitter and shit options.

Reading today is a potential banana skin. It won’t be easy and could go either way. I’m going for a hard fought 2-1 to us with us making Reading look good.

reggie 57 – ” Why on earth is gervihno in the team he’s fucking useless ” !!

Isn’t it obvious ? Because Arsene KNOWS.

It doesn’t matter who we play and it really doesn’t matter if we win, lose or draw. The madness will continue just like it has been for the last 8 years. No world class players, no desire to win trophies, no real passion owner, board or manager. It is so, so disappointing that we find ourselves once again pitching for fourth and nothing else.

  50. Spectrum

Is Adkins in the dugout for Reading ? He wasn’t supposed to be in charge until Reading’s next match against Southampton. ….Anyone ?

No chance of Wenger selling Gervinho, not a prayer, same with Diaby.

They’re his babies, they lick his backside and aren’t the type to speak out against him…they’re in his debt…therefore they are perfect in his eyes

  52. the_real_andi

I´ve just checked we can still win the EPL in case the mancs lose all their games, we win all of them and score an awful lot of goals. feels like a trophy to be matematically capable of winning the EPL after 30 games 🙂

NoMoreCesc – ” I can’t get myself to wish losses on the team but I can understand when people do. To me it’s a sign of someone who does love the club but is suffering greatly “.

Ah ! Someone else who gets it. Thanks mate. Cheers !

I quite enjoy the groups stages spectrum, and my love for arsenal is more than my hatred of wenger and the board.

If we are out of the champions league it will be a nightmare.

  55. Alex James

See good old Bramble has even up to his tricks again. Premier league standard? Never as been. In the Gus Ceasar class of defending.

  56. Spectrum

And Jeff – As Gambon perceptively pointed out – how far have we fallen when we worry about winning a HOME match against a relegation struggler ?

For the record, we SHOULD win comfortably ( under normal circumstances ). But since when have things been “normal” at Arsenal since 2005 ? Anything less than a win, well……..shush ! We don’t want to upset the likes of Nasri’s Mouth.

  57. R.S..P.C.Arsenal

Best is a 0-0 draw today. A nice finish of 7 th or 8th Will see us only have to concrecate on the league! Don’t fall for the crap that finishing outside of the top four will stop big players coming here ? How many have come in the last 5 years eh,,,, shit we scored

  58. reality check

    Spectrum going in! today ha

Can’t bring myself to say I hope we lose but I get why people feel that way.

Really and truly today should be a walk over. Even with gerv playing.

  59. Samir

I think the biggest weak link in our team is Giroud…
Terrible player! Not what we need at all…He should be a plan B striker…Not our only one!

    Bloody Nasri’s”prick in his mouth”
    wades in,with his gay pearl’s of wisdom…

Would love to see Diaby retire,in the coming year.

    More so,just to trump,your stupid meandering’s..

    Would love it,really love it.

    3 stooges on this block..Tom,Keyser & NM..

They make me absolutely fucking sick, listening to their rambling’s..

    Prick’s of the highest order..
    I await,the final run-in for top 4..

If we fail to make it..??

What more excuse making from you..??

    Maybe/not possibly/it could have been..?!!

I doubt you are, what you say you are, just a prick who think’s his opinions has some weight..

You could not even call the Eisfield,talent/progression-right!!

You have about as much insight,as OGL does when undertaking basic roles, such as tactics, substitutions, overplaying player’s coming back from injuries & paying player’s who are shite,on over-valued contracts..

    Absolute arsehole..!!

  61. gambon

How the fuck can a 25 year old footballer, on £60k per week, still not know how to kick the ball properly?

  62. LeMassiveCoq

I fucking hate Aaron Ramsey. Total waste of space. Slows the play down or loses it. WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT

  63. Jeff

Spectrum, I hear you loud and clear but we are surrounded with people who still trust Wenger. So long as they are around, so will he.

  64. NoMoreCesc

Playing at a high tempo from the start for a change. Gervihno needs to go to finishing school but one thing you have to say for him, he doesn’t hide, unlike his dopey strike partner. I may be biased because I like TR but he really does keep the midfield clicking over at high tempo. Flappy looks sure handed today as well.

  65. Samir

We really need a class striker! If we had one we’d be 4 up by now!
    Jovetic is a must!
Demote Giroud to a plan B striker.

  66. Dutchman

What a chances ! Tottenham has bale and he will get them in top 4. We had RvP last year but spurs has bale now. He is topclass. Maybe something goods will happen when we finish outside of the top 4.

  67. GoonerHart

i dont get all the shouts for jovetic, yes he is better than what we have but not much, he has potential to be WC, but everyone here seems to bitch that wenger doesnt buy wc players just player’s with potential.

jovetic for me has the possibility to be a flop, and imagine if we spend 26m on him you guys will go crazy if he flops yet your all championing him

  68. Al

One thing I can say about this shocking season of ours is that I have immensely enjoyed watching santi cazorla play football.

  69. Alex James

Swansea bubble has finally burst. All rather predictable. Was rather hoping though that they would have sorted out Spurs for us. We an’t afford to have Spurs picking up away points against supposedly good sides.

  70. NoMoreCesc

I know it’s Reading but we are playing with really nice tempo and movement . Three players getting into the box with each attack. Finally an attractive display from the lads.
