The manager thinks Arsenal have quality centrebacks already so it’s difficult to buy someone. What?

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So before I talk about the game tonight I wanted to share this little snippet with you. This is what our manager said yesterday, the day that Spurs signed Pienaar and Villa spend up to £24million on Darren Bent.

‘I cannot tell you at the moment whether it will be a substantial signing or cover because it has to click in my head and nothing happened yet. If you look at the centre-backs we have, they are quality: Djourou, Squillaci, Koscielny, Vermaelen. The quality of the player coming in, what will it be? It is a complement of the players we have already? It’s very difficult to predict’

Why is that then boss? Djourou has great potential, I’ll give you that, Koscielny maybe turn out ok I’ll give you that, but Squillaci is up there with Silvestre and Thomas Vermaelen is probably out until next season. How is that difficult? You said if Vermaelen didn’t recover you would buy, what’s now so difficult?

If you can’t see that we have needed a centreback for the last two years, then I think you must watch our matches with the same glasses that Pat Rice does. You really need to stop all this crap and spend some of our money, there are a ton of available centrebacks out there, no excuses this time. We waited 4 years hopeful of Nordtveit only to find out he wasn’t good enough, it’s funny, when Nasri turns out to be worth the £11mil you spent on him as a teenager, you want the credit, yet when we spend years watching people screw up (Senderos) and eventually you let them go, you say nothing, they just slip quietly away, like they weren’t here in the first place.

How long do we have to wait until you admit you are wrong and haven’t the first clue about what a defender should be and hand the responsibility over to someone who does like Steve Bould, I would say Pat Rice but since 1996, he lost the ability to speak.

Onto tonight, the press reports say that Djourou will be rested and Ignasi Miquel is playing, well I have no idea what he’s like, but experimenting away to Leeds with a kid is a risk, I hope it works out because if it doesn’t, we are going out.

We are overwhelming favourites with the bookies, surprising as that is I’m a little nervous, if you played the team that beat West Ham I would be supremely confident, why they need resting is beyond me, isn’t playing football what they do for a living? Isn’t that why they get salaries that fans can only dream of?

Still he’ll play who he wants, if we win, he’ll take the credit, if we lose he’ll blame the inexperience, either way it doesn’t matter to Arsene Wenger, he has the safest job in world football.

I think we should spend the first 15 minutes keeping possession, then the next 15 probing, then slam, if we play our pressing game and take our chances, we’ll win easily, if we don’t and Nasri is missing I’m not so sure, either way I think he should play arguably our most influential player and one that knows where the goal is.

This is the team I expect he’ll play tonight.

Sagna Miquel Koscielny Gibbs

Wilshere Denilson Rosicky

Walcott Chamakh Arshavin

This is the team I would play.

Sagna Song Koscielny Gibbs

Wilshere Cesc Ramsey

Walcott Chamakh Nasri

Either way I expect if we play football, press for 90 minutes and shoot on sight, we will run out handsome winners, but make no mistake, they will want this, they will shut us down and they will shoot on sight, this one will be more balanced if he plays a young team, but let’s not forget, we are only here playing a game we don’t want because he made 8 changes last time.

Give it your best shot Arsenal, we want this badly because we want the quadruple, Arsene, take a leaf out of Villa and Tottenham’s book, spend some proper money, forget your bonus for once, get in a decent defender, they aren’t going bust and nor will we, we need to win something, the defenders you bought in are as bad as the ones you had last year, and they aren’t with us now are they.

Last bit, Denilson has just slammed Cesc as a captain, he said we need a leader and Cesc isn’t one, he also said the best keeper at Arsenal is Almunia, now after all that if he stays I will definitely believe he is someones love child. Get him out now! And Wenger says he looks for intelligence in his players as the most important attribute, ha, ha follow that!

Have a great day Grovers, sorry for the negative bits but I just couldn’t believe what I read, again!

    Its a shame really,

I thought Eboue was beginning to look half decent.

Id much rather play Eboue ahead of Bendy up front. At least he wins freekicks 😀

Great game of football. But it shouldve been more comfortable imo.

  2. albo

Keyser – not much to take, perhaps other than that the ‘best team in the world’ (TM) also have a less than amazing B team…

  3. Paul N

I dont get this site. Go from bashing the players to hailing them with a goal. Kind of bipolarish.

I agree with Incesc in saying that Denilson played well, as he does most of the times but hey he is the scapegoat of the day.

Arshavin played with fire tonight, he will get it together, I just hope the fans continue to support him, or support him.

TOMTOM is moany fault finding individual.

    Great win!!!

  4. A

    Similar to us tonight Marko.

Pique, Messi and Xavi are the only first team players who played….

Barca’s squad as has been pointed out previously really isn’t that strong….

  5. Keyser

More comfortable ? As in buried chances ?! We’re not as clinical as we need to be but we’re getting there.

Leeds were always going to be tough, no team in any competition is going to be a walkover.

  6. 1886-2006

Credit where credit is due. I thought they played well tonight when it could have quite easily gone wrong. We came flying out of the traps and I think that knocked Leeds out of any game plan they might have had, I am sure they wanted to get stuck into us straight away but the movement and passing was good for the first 30 mins or so and i think that took a lot out of Leeds. Was wary about tonight but i will sleep a bit better after that.

Still would like to see new signings though, but hey, lets just celebrate a good away win in a comp that is notorious for banana skins.

  7. David

Not to talk about the fact that Bendy had all the time and space in the world to pick out the pass.

No team in competition is going to be a walk over is simply not true because Arsenal have a habbit of walking over teams! aye?

Personally i think Denilson is at his best when he’s involved in the attack.

  8. Keyser

Afelleys gone to them already ? They were 5-0 up, think it’s just them taking it easy and blooding in some of the fringe players.

  9. Marko

Puyol, Pedro, Iniesta and Villa aside they were pretty strong, Maxwell for Abidal, Mash for Biscuits, Adriano for Alves aint much the same really.

  10. A

lol David, if that was David Beckham then the commentators wouldn’t have shut up about it! It was absolutely superb – showed his class.

Ten days for Wenger to secure a centre back – really needs to happen….

Or Miquel to start against Huddersfield?!

  11. A

Alves is one of their most important players Marko, Adriano isn’t fit to clean his boots!

Busquets is so much better on the ball than Mascherano too.

Abidal to Maxwell I guess isn’t huge, I don’t rate either! Maxwell is tantamount to Silvestre though….

Afellay has made their reserve team a bit stronger but I’d still rate ours higher

  12. Keyser

David – You have to work hard to make it look soo easy, look at today, we bossed the first half Leeds created nothing, we’re 2-0 up and what happens ?!

A player we let go at 15 hits a 30 yard screamer to get them back in it, dunno what you’re arguing about here.

  13. David

    Come on A,

Dont exaggerate, doesnt show any class it just shows given the time and space he can pick out a pass.

He done fuck all all game and then puts one good cross and we’re going over board here.

89% of the time we pass to Bendy the opposition almost score.

    I think not.

  14. A

    Eboue JD Squillaci Gibbs

    Rosicky Denilson Diaby

    Bendtner Chamakh Arshavin

    Adriano Milito Youth Player? Maxwell

    Tiago Mascherano Keita

    Jeffren Bojan Affelay

  15. A

Is Luke Freeman back from injury?

Would be nice to see him link up with Afobe and Aneke tomorrow in the FA Youth cup. Hope there are streams

  16. David

I cant see how what you just said justifies that there are no easy games?

Ofcoarse you have to work hard to make things look easy.

    Thats what training is for.

  17. David

    I agree A,

    Maxwell is their Denilson imo.

Does a few things right but keeps giving the ball away. Very hit and miss type of player.

  18. goonermichael

We did what was required no complaints. Aparet from picking a screamer out of the net chesney didn’t have much to do. I enjoyed that, I’m pissed as well

  19. David

One of these days i’ll buy you a beer.

The conversation is bound to be day and night but it will still be funny.

Kieta has always been class wherever he’s played but i wont get into it.

  20. A

I don’t particularly rate him David! It’s like having Djourou in midfield, he’s so so poor on the ball at times, when his game is off he can’t kick the ball properly neither passing nor shooting….

Gimme Diaby over him any day….

  21. DaleDaGooner

    So good win aye?

A lot on Denilson’s plate…same with Arshavin, though i saw Arshavin tracking back a lot and putting in a shift, don’t know why people can’t give him a break. Bendtner’s cross for RvP Winger-like, pin point and crisp!

Again, Who has complaints about a Koscielny-JD partnership? Kos was immense at the back! JD was a rock!

Sagna..what more can i say, superb rb, superb game, superb goal!

Gibbs was alright, but please do not mention he is ready to take Clichy’s job, hasn’t shown he’s better. Ok game today.

Leeds goal was unstoppable, can’t blame anyone.

Nasri…..fact is, 2 games out and we weren’t good enough, even with Cesc on, but he plays and look at how dominant we are.

Song is a very important part of the firt 11, can’t understand why anyone would quickly point him out as useless, VERY USEFUL player, he was the engine.

Chamakh did his usual shift, he’s looking lost in the first team, not due to lack of skill, but looks like he’s losing confidence even more, should still come back to form.

RvP…wow, a fit all season RvP Does our team wonders, same with Cescy, need these 2 guys for the rest of the season

With what we have right now, Barca should be very afraid, they might get dumped out both legs. Losing to Betis today with a strong squad, they will get beaten one way or another if we have everyone fit.

  22. David

    Night Gm,

Whats wrong with having JD in midfield?

Didnt you see him almost score the other day?

Nearly took off Scott Parkers head and played some very nice 1-2’s.

  23. A

    yeah it was hilarious david!

I remember JD in midfield for the reserves, pretty funny just how bad someone can be on the ball. Gimme Senderos in midfield over him any day!

  24. David

We really must be seeing 2 different things tho A,

JD is just as good passing the ball as Kozz imo.

I remember having a spat with Keyser one time on an Arshavin solo goal that JD did well to pick him out on.

No worries, he’s our first choice CB now so 😀

  25. Gooby

that cross from kozzer to bendy was amazing, he intercepted the ball for the first goal

imo cesc didn’t hit second gear yet, and RvP is just starting to do so.

nasri, cesc, rvp and walcott in top from. exciting days ahead

  26. A

David JD was attrocious in the reserves in midfield, he made Song look like Xavi! And when he’s pressed his passing is absolutely terrible, and even when he has time on the ball his passing can be very very clumsy!!

Kozzer is the opposite when it comes to his ability on the ball….

    i did what????

  28. Telarse

I know you can only beat what’s in front of you so I, for one, am glad there’s been shit in front of us the last two games and the next two games cos we need the confidence built for when we face a half decent team!
(God, I really do hope Wigan are shit!!)

  29. Ja_Gunner

    My team for Wigan….

Bendtner to come in for Chamakh, Rosicky and Vela/Eboue get a run out????

Thats how we should play the next three games….if Wenger gets a CB then replace Miquel with new CB…unfortunately Wenger does not intend to buy anyone so lets just hope the squad can hold out….

  30. AA23

Really great game of football tonight. As soon as Bendtner hit that cross I said “thats a goal”
    You could just tell.
Good strike from the Leeds player too, unstopable…but Chezzer was almost there.
Fair play to Leeds, they went for it and produced a really good game.
    Loved it.

  31. LAzer

Wenger will wait it out on Squillachi and not buy anyone in the window. If we are lucky we can get by for the short term. He will then say I do not need to buy as I have 3 quality CBs and Vermaelen to come back in March.

Fearing the rotation vs Wigan…how about we give Ramsey a bench spot for this one? Start Theo, Cesc and Rvp, rest Nasri unless needed. Wilshere back in for Denilson and Clichy for Gibbs at the back.

Can’t get complacent right now, every game is a must win.

  32. 10K Lakes Gooner

Cracking atmosphere and a proper cup tie. Great performance by the lads and well won by the good guys. On to Wigan. Up the Arsenal!

  33. OPG

Leeds made it a real cup tie so there wasn’t much respite for our players despite the smaller pitch especially our only fit Center Back’s, Wenger is really running them into the ground.

Seriously, these commentators piss me off.

I guess its in their interests to talk up the game and make it sound like Leeds made a fight of it (especially as the FA cup is all ITV have got), but all this constant talk of ‘courageous Leeds’ etc etc when we have TOTALLY dicked on them over the 90 minutes is ridiculous. We could have won 6-1 (or 6-0 if that guy hadn’t hit a one in a million shot) and we totally out played them for huge portions of the game. Talk about that ITV tossers!

Absolutely spot on, oh for a seriously clinical striker….

  35. bnsb

Nasri IS our clinical “finisher’, though not a striker. RVP was clinical with that header. Chamukh header was saved by world class save. Hope they keep repeating that kind of performance.

  36. OPG

Wouldn’t say we dominated the whole game, the passing was sloppy at times which allowed Leeds to gain some composure and Arshavin especially was wasteful in the final third.

  37. dennisdamenace

Yep RvP is our clinical striker, until he’s injured……..again!!

Chamakh’s clinical ability was all for there to see again, 6/7 yards out, free header!!

As for Nasri, if he keeps on going for the rest of the season he could very well end up being our new Bobby P….

Great win though, especially while carrying too many passengers again.

  38. dennisdamenace

Matt Law (Express) state on Twitter that Denilson was NOT misquoted, the interview was filmed, explain that Arsene!!

  39. TOMTOM

I said lastnight that Song was dominating the midfield and Arshavin was trying hard but still got accused of moaning because I said Denilson is shit,Fuck off Paul N and I think you will find that Zeus is the only Denilson fan on this site lol

  40. timao

last night the commentator peter drury said something like -coming up we’ve got a real “lip-smacking tie; notts county v man city”

i thought that was a really odd choice of phrase, but then in the ad break mcdonalds were advertising a “lip-smacking burger”. i wonder if drury gets paid extra to do subliminal advertising, or was he just hungry?

  41. DeiseGooner

ha ha chozzer – RVP’s was trying to give the keeper a clue as to where he was putting the ball – he just didnt see it in time!!

  42. TOMTOM

We are being linked with a 25 million pound bid for Ramos today, that cant be true. Wenger would never risk his bonus like that, maybe it was a bid of 250 thousand.

  43. Cescs_MyBoy

    Couple of things:

    A) stop playing football manager
    B) Madrid won’t sell thier best, most experienced, most capped CB
    C) Wenger doesn’t get a bonus for not spending money

    Carry on
