Arsenal win valuable point with excellent result + Transfer update

by & filed under Uncategorized.

I honestly believe we’ve pulled a very good result out of the bag. I think Liverpool will improve vastly on last years league position and I’m sure they’ll take points off the others in the top 4 scrum. You have to remember that we were missing Cesc, Robin and Song and we had players like Diaby who have hardly trained this preseason. We fielded the inexperienced Jack Wilshere, two Premier League debutants and a keeper not fit for purpose.

When you add all that up, it’s surprising we came away with anything!

I was also pleased with the goal we conceded and the overall sloppy performance from Almunia. He was given the captains armband in a weak attempt to instill a bit of confidence… the plan clearly didn’t work and he was typically diabolical all game. He flapped at 3 crosses and he didn’t react quick enough to the N’gog finish. A sad way to end a below average career at Arsenal. I hadn’t heard much about Schwarzer from the people I talk to regarding Arsenal but yesterday I was told we’ll secure his signature within the next ten days.

Not one to spread rumours, but him not being fit for Fulham’s first game has about as much credibility as my jokes. I heard we’re looking at 1-2 centre backs and the preference is British. Here’s hoping! When Wenger says that people aren’t selling, he’s not lying. Apparently there is a lot of truth in the Mertesacker, Jones and Jagielka stories.

We want good players but we’re not after them for silly money. If we bought Jagielka for £17million off the back of that serious injury and he broke down Robin style I think people would be calling for Wenger’s head. I guess it’s a similar story with Mertesacker, his height and presence is appealing, but the guy is error prone. If we bought him for £20million and he flopped, it’d be embarrassing.

The interesting thing about all this is that the only clubs in Europe with any money are City, Arsenal and the German clubs. Why aren’t teams selling? It should be a buyers market. Or is it like the stagnating housing market in the UK at the moment? People can’t buy because sellers have unrealistic price expectations?

I feel like I’m making excuses for Wenger here. The one thing I find incredibly incompetent is that we’ve taken so long to secure a new keeper. There is no excuse on that front and in a league that could be decided by a point, I find it maddening that we’ve already dropped two because of a keeping error.

Anyway, Arsenal dominated the first half possession statistics in embarrassing fashion.

Eboue was marauding through the Liverpool midfield taking any opportunity he could to plunge to the floor and feign injury. The guy is still an embarrassment to the club with his behaviour. Still, the resulting freekicks gave us a few chances, Thomas Vermaelen going closest with a rasping 30 yard striker.

Johnson was the first to test Almunia with a high central shot that was tipped over. The following corner found Ngog who was denied by Clichy on the near post.

Joe Cole was sent off for a very silly challenge on Kozzer. A tackle that saw our French boy stretchered off.  Chamakh was being offered no service whatsoever and our key players were given very little chance to express themselves. Liverpool were woeful.

The second saw the Koz come back on with and egg sized lump on his shin for his troubles. People have told me one of the Frenchman’s best attributes is that he’s a fighter and he has the right attitude. He was going to need that with the introduction of Torres. One area of his game he’ll need to work on is his ability to deal with aerial balls. He was beaten by N’gog early in the second half when perhaps he should have done better. All part of the steep learning curve. He looks sharp on the ground and he’s fast.

Our first goal was conceded after a catalogue of errors, N’gog was threaded through and he beat our captain at the near post. At least 5 mistakes were made in the build up to the goal.

1) Clichy had the ball passed through his legs

2) Arshavin made a poor pass

3) Jack fluffed his touch

4) There was no holding midfielder clearing up at the edge of the box

5) Almunia was beaten at his near post by a soft shot in my opinion

Arsenal brought on Theo and Rosicky and we lost Eboue and Jack. I’ve read some criticism of the young Englishman and I think that’s bang out of order. He’s 18, hugely talented and he just started against some of the worlds best midfielders. He deserves patience.

Theo, surprisingly changed up the game. He moved up top and his speed created a bit of a fear factor. He didn’t really do anything too spectacular but the fact we can bring two players of their calibre off the bench is very encouraging. Theo bent a freekick around the wall only to be denied by a tidy Reina save. Wenger should take note of how well other players took freekicks today.

Rosicky swept into the box off the back off the back of a lovely one two move with Arshavin, his shot impressively tipped over by Reina.

RvP managed to keep an Arshavin back post cross in, but Theo couldn’t capitalise on some Reina indecisiveness.

In the 89th minute, Rosicky floated an average cross into the box, Reina squinting in the sun didn’t come for the ball allowing Chamakh to nip in front of him and get a touch that hit the post, the ball came straight back at Reina who could do nothing other than bundle the ball into his own net.

What is it with Spanish keepers?

The game could have been killed off when Theo broke into the box with three players on hand to slot the ball home, instead of playing the ball to feet, he decided to go back post with a floated chip. Typical poor decision making from Theo. The ball went up the other end and Kuyt was dispossessed with a kick to the nuts by Kozzer. He picked up a his first yellow. Gerrard had a freekick 25 yards out that was saved by Almunia.

Koz still had time to make his mark on the game when he handled the ball and received a debut red card. Am I upset? No way! He’s one of the boys now!

After 5 painful minutes of injury time, 20 players finished the game and a point was shared.

Now we have a whole bunch of easy games coming up, we’ve got a full squad of players to choose from (Bar Rambo who is now running) and we’ll hopefully have a new goalkeeper and a centre back to get excited about.

Today wasn’t perfect, but remember, we’re not 100% fit, we’re missing key players and we don’t have a proper keeper.

Arsenal know what they have to do to make the league their own this year and I truly believe we’re going to bolster. Keep the faith for two more weeks Gooners. I’m pre-empting a great squad and I have no doubt we’ll be up there come this end of the season.

Could this be our year?

“Could this be our year?” – NO!

    Groundhog season looms…..

Same old frailties….dominate possession, concede cheaply, struggle to bread-down opposition defence….thank Gawd for Reina’s blunder…..

  2. Ali Saljuk

@ Pedro : LG’s twitter account has some perks afterall 😛

We could be had all three points. Their goal was at the wrong time otherwise we wouldve passed them to death. One point at anfield aint that bad.

Koz was good , we need defensice reinforcement quickly. Glad to be on the right side of gk gaff for once 🙂

  3. charybdis1966

Boom..boom….I win in the bla bla bla, yadder yadder yaddah.
I have to echo the thoughts of the instant karma meted out to Reina; his show of disrespect to us got shoved down his throat with interest.
The sight of him trying to catch the ball, like a girl, and missing it like someone who can’t clap was priceless – and the sweat running down his bald pate made me smile after a nervy 90 minutes.

  4. B

Diaby was frustrating, when he’s not fit there’s no strong runs, and his slow decision making drives me crazy!!!

  5. Bob N7

A very reasoned review. I think it’s going to be interesting who Wenger picks when all players are available….At the moment I’d play Nasri ahead of Arshavin on the left. against Blackpool Song will be needed at CB so I’d go with a midfield of Nasri Fabregas, Diaby, Rosicky and Chamakh, Van P ‘up front’.

I think a draw was ok in the circumstance (players missing, not fully fit). Put it this way, how would be feeling if we’d lost?

I was impressed with Koscielny-pace and commitment… Chamakh could have done with a little more support…Cesc should sort that out.

    Come on you Reds!

  6. Ray in SF

the Beeb often have a nice way with words…

“…Ngog, who angled in a shot which Almunia will be disappointed to have let in at his near post.”

    sounds all too familiar

  7. Surferosa

Blimey Pedro- have you been taking positive pills over the summer?

On the one hand, twas dperessing to see some of the same old failings: dominating possession without any meaningful end-product; flapping goalkeeper; inability to defend set pieces; Diaby losing the ball too often (though he at least played the Defensive role much better in the 1st half); on the other, I was genuinely concerned that we’d get anything from this game- my big fear being we’d get turned over and the Verm-Koz partnership would be all over the place (it wasn’t, they both played really well together).

Chamakh towering over Pools DC’s was a welcome site- for your 1st game in English football he did really well; Wilshere didn’t look out of place at all; Nasri was superb 1st half before fading.

Arshavin still looks terribly out of form- he needs a goal I think- and if we are hell bent on playing with no natural wingers- then someone has to get Sagna and Clichy to improve their crossing (esp now Chamakh looks like he’ll get a few goals from crosses).

All in all, Id of settled for the point at the start. But, we cannot go another season with Almunia; and the Kos’ sending off shows we need another CB. Heres hoping.

  8. Baafuor from Ghana

Bang Bang!Almunia is really shit.I hope we get Schwarzer dis week.Clichy has really lost his form, gibbs should be given the chance. And as for Diaby, the least said him the better.

  9. Chipo

My first 90mins watching Koz. He looked really really tidy (was surprised to be honest). Great touch, great distribution, quick and alert. Clearly strength is still an issue, but he looks to be the business – anyone who puts a boot in Dirk Kuyt’s nethers is a friend of mine!

Chamakh was isolated upfront, and his hold-up play was (dare i say it) not as good as Nikki B’s! Putting it down to early season rustiness, but clearly he needs to hit the gym as well.

How Diaby made it into the team i will never know. Did he even play one minute of pre-season?

As for giving Almunia the captaincy, i despair. We have a BORN leader in Vermaelen, and instead the team are meant to look to the bumbling fool for guidance? All they see is his mopey little face.

I think the Blackpool game might be a lot harder than people think, although Holloway will try and come at us (only way he knows) so we should be ok.

  10. Moray

terrible crossing from Sagna again closed down supply to Chamakh.

Since we bought the guy who is good with his head, Sagna now seems to be trying (without success still) to be passing the ball along the floor.

we will indeed chippy – if you honestly believe that we’d EVER put out a team like that then you’ve not watched much of Arsenal, nor the premiership over the last few years! crazyness….

So Young Chippy got 9 starters Jumped up A got 8, Maybe you should watch Arsenal a bit more,

Oh and for your Info A ive probably seen Arsenal in Europe more times than youve been to home games you cheeky little beggar 😉

  12. Clacko the gooner

    Morning all.
I was quite impressed with our game yesterday. We dominated the first half and had plenty of chances in the second half to have won the game. The way hodgson plays I don’t think Liverpool are going to conceed many goals (especially at home) this year.
Kozzer impressed me, his positioning is first class. As you say Pedro he just needs to improve his heading and add a bit more muscle. The one thing that frustrated me most was the lack of us going wide, especially now we have a target man to cross to in the box.
In my opinion this was a good(ish) start to build on with our regualr first teamers to come back aswell. Looks like we have quite good depth to the squad (just not a CB)

  13. Jimbo

What do we know so far (ok, not much to go on, but still)…

1 – Chelsea will be champions.
2 – 3rd – 6th will be contested, fairly evenly, between Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs.
3 – None of that group will finish higher than 3rd.

  14. tonyadamsisgod

Gael Clichy was hands down the worst player on the pitch yetersday!! Get Gibbs straight back into the team!

Also, fuck the 37 year old Schwarzer off and sign Given for a solid 5 years worth of good goalkeeping!! People say he isn’t good at collecting crosses. If he’s worse than Schwarzer its by a minimal amount and his age gives him the edge in the value stakes!!

    Morning all….

  15. Clacko the gooner

just a thought but i think Gibbs should start against Blackpool. i don’t think they are going to cause us too many problems and Gibbs is a way better crosser than Clichy!

  16. tonyadamsisgod

Jimbo – Have to agree with that apart from I can see Utd pushing Chelsea very hard for the title. This could be the season that everyone has been waiting for and Chelsea’s ageing team starts to pick up injuries and struggle with a hectic run in!?

  17. DB10

who was the genius who said karma is a bitch? I think Karma bitch slapped Reina today and it was wee deserved for his off season antics!!!! I was very glad we had a goal( we didn’t lose), but the manner in which the goal went in made it extra special!!!

  18. Surferosa

Agree about the captaincy chippy- though I feel this has more to do with Wenger’s belief that giving the captaincy is a motivational tool to be used for the individual- as such, I dont think he values it at all in any way on the pitch (all Wengers appointed captains have been people threatening to leave the club- rather than any inate leadership ability). Sometimes it works (Vieira); sometimes it doesn’t (Henry).

Either way, Verm absolutely should be captain. No question.

  19. N21 TONE

Morning all. I started yesterday thinking we needed a minimum of 2 players. After what I saw, I have changed that to 4 players to even mount a challenge on the league.

  20. chippy

Yep been saying it for a while Clichy is not and has not ever been the same since the Brum game, he is all over the place and its only his heart and commitment that keep fans on side i Love the bloke, but Gibbs should be given his chance to show what he can do,

Add to the fact weve now got a centre Forward that can head a ball it makes sense to play a left back that can cross it !!

  21. Clacko the gooner

Le invicible, you can’t appeal against two yellow cards. He will get a one game ban so will miss Blackpool

  22. Le Invicible

seriously, 1 quality CB and Kepper and we WILL win things this year.

I hope Rosicky stays fit this year, he is fucking class.

Cant really fault anyone yesterday, good team effort, although Clichy and Sagna need to step up a little more.

  23. gambon

Ive been saying for years that Clichy isnt good enough, but you get muppets klike Keyser who refuse to believe any Arsenal player isnt great.

Maybe its time for the doomers to be renamed ‘realists’ cos they get a hell of a lot more right than the AKBs do.

  24. chippy

How good was Tv yesterday that bloke is fucking immense the way he went through the Gerrard tackle was a joy to behold !!

  25. Le Invicible

Clichy is a quality no.2 left back.

Gibbs should get the nod against Blaxckpool.

He will be better than Clichy by Xmas id he gets a run.

  26. wattsy65

    Morning All

Nice well reasoned piece, but cannot agree that a GK and CB will make so much difference, yes it will improve things, but we’ll still get beaten beat by agression and muscle, we are as soft as shit. Diaby was truly awful, when does he ever track back, and Arshavin the little fat bloke out wide was even worse. We have no beef in midfield and this will be our downfall against the teams which get in amongst us.

Hear our coach has signed up for another 3 years after being courted by other teams, wish he had taken up one of the offers, our worst signing of the year so far.

  27. Jaguar reloaded

One good run against an unfit Torres and now Kolsieny is a legend. What a joke!He would have been sent off for pulling down a pool player any other day.

We were pathetic yesterday apart from Wishere and Rosicky. One point won at Anfield.

  28. goonerT1m

plenty of reason to be optimistic, he has to get these signings to have any chance of a serious challenge, gibbs should play instead of clichy in the next game, koss will be a top centre back when he and the verminator get more games with a proper goalie, we may just might have a proper defence! cant wait to see RVP back and fit, not sure whats happened to AA23, he needs to get over his ego and start playing football again!

    Spot on…

  30. chippy

He had a very good debut you cannot argue against that and as for Wilshere he was like a little boy lost which is to be expected getting pitched in against the rat eaters at Anfield but to say he had a good game is laughable,

I like your sense of optimism but we have no excuses for not being prepared with the team. How can you have faith in the manager when his stubborn attitude has wasted 2 years on this goalkeeper problem.
WE are Arsenal and we have always had great goalkeepers.

  32. chippy

    Soz Chipo 🙂

They see pearls of wisdom and automatically assume they come from my keyboard you should be honoured 🙂

  33. Elena

We need a steady first squad, that can play at least several matches in a row. Endless rotation of the players makes me sick – I never know what to wait from the performace. I am stisfied with the result though (not to say – relieved), but the game was awful.

  34. Sue

Lots of old failings – I think Jennings keeps himself fit training the tinys keepers is it worth giving him a ring? Poor defending at set plays. Please get Steve Bould to take a few sessions with the big boys on how to defend corner / free kicks.
Arsey sending off for Kozza but he is looking ok. Chamakh made the most of poor service and got in where it hurts he’ll do.
A point away from home against a top6 team and a goal isnt that bad whereas the tinys no goals one point at home againsta top 6 collection of players. Can we tap Given up?
I think if we hadnt conceded so soon after half time and the sending off it would have been different but if I was Wenger I would have bought a keeper over the summer

  35. tonyadamsisgod

Jaguar – Your saying the complete opposite to most. Kos was very tidy at the back. The ref got the non-pulling down decision bang on….Torres went down far too easily. His only mistake was having the same reactions as any human being alive that causes you to lift your arms a little when someone punts a football towards your face!! Jack did not have a great game. I dont think he was too bad though and I believe Wenger shackled him with instructions. Had he been given Nasri’s role he would have played better. As it turned out, in the 1st half at least, Nasri was hands down the best player on the pitch.

  36. Maverick

Thought Wilshere was confused as to what his role was yesterday. He was passing sideways and backwards instead of the forward balls that he played when he was on loan last year. We need to close down the opposition quicker. Clichy was very poor. He did not offer Arshavin any kind of support down the left side. Giving Gibbs a start would be a good idea in the next game.

  37. arsenal4ever

Good post pedro but why didnt you mention Given. It seems no smoke without fire so I am sure there is something into it.

  38. obum

I think its time for gibbs to step up, and a goalkeeper is needed asap, arsene round off the transfer dis wk, I have dis feeling d defender we’ll get will be either of gallas or sylvester.

  39. Doublegooner

    Anyone fancy Melo ??

If the only way of getting him is involving Clichy then lets do it.

Lets get Given or Schwarzer …NOW..

    Arshavin….He’s looking a lazy fucker..Anyone else agree ?

  40. ZARgooner

We were without our core: Song, Cesc and RvP… If those 3 were on the field would have been a different story.
Performance wasn’t great but i think with a few tweaks such as getting Shwarzer in and another CB like Sakho i think our squad has some depth.

If you had a look at our bench yesterday it certainly looked a lot better than previous seasons. So I do have a smidgen of optimism still left in me. My “BEST team” selection:
    Eboue Vermaelen Koscielny Gibbs
    Rosicky Cesc Arshavin
    Chamakh RVP

    Back up/Bench:
Almunia, Wilshere, Walcott, Sakho/CB, Nasri, Vela, Sagna, Clichy, Diaby, Bendtner etc etc

  41. gnarleygeorge9

“I’m preempting a great squad and I have no doubt we’ll be up there come this end of the season.”

    “Could this be our year?”

Keep a lid on it Pedro till he signs a new keeper, whether it be Given or Schwarzer 😈

But, I agree with your post. Coming away with a point will do me. It wasn’t till they changed the score on the TV screen to 1-1 that I trusted that we’d scored. It was just that sort of game for The Arsenal IMO, & I half expected the ref to disallow it 😉

  42. KM

    postive post Pedro

However i was a bit depressed really with our play

Whats the point of keeping possession when u cant do jackshit with it? I knew L’pool were going to nick a goal….it happens all the time against even poorer teams. Since Hleb,Flamini,Ade left we have lost our cutting edge..we just play in circles…its just annoying as FCUK!

I love arsenal’s football but passing side to side and then back and forth is pointless. Nasri is a good player but he is not CESC! He lacks the balls to go direct sometimes…i think he’s too scared to lose the ball. I hope he gets better but he’s typical of Wenger’s buys…faffs around too much.

I dnt know what to say abt Arshavin…he’s supposed to be one of our best players…i love the guy but i get disheartened when he does not give it his all… if this continues i won’t be surprised if he he loses his place to Rosicky/Vela.

Very impressed by Koscielney – exactly what we needed in this side. He just needs a run of games to adapt to the EPL and then he’l be sensational

Chamakh – i thought he did ok but like KOS he needs more time to settle in to the EPL.

Diaby – i thought he did well in the 1st half..sat back and done his duty well, but as the match wore on i realised that Song is so imp. to this side.

Wilshere – he tried really hard but i think he needs that one-year loan to Bolton. He has talent in abundance but needs that experience and confidence, and he’l get that at Bolton where he’l be the main man. I thought we could have done with Rosicky starting ahead of him.

Overall a draw was a fair point because we dominated the 1st half and L’pool the 2nd. However it goes to show that L’pool down to 10men had more balls than us and came out all guns blazing.

I really think this side lacks mental strength…they lack fire in their bellies…if they wanted to win, they would have been over L’pool throughout the match.
I still we’r heading towards 3rd/4th again this season. Sorry guys for being so negative but i was really upset after y’days match because we haven’t changed from the last few seasons.

  43. Jimbo

I wonder, did some of you lot even watch the first half?

One of our best (in fact only) chances came from Gael Clichy’s pace and attacking down the left. Yes, he was poor in the second half, as were most of our players, but it sounds to me like some of you didn’t even turn the telly on until half time.

  44. Pedro

Jaguar, like the best defenders in the world don’t do exactly what Koz did yesterday… you only have to watch Lucio for ten minutes to see that’s almost entirely what his game is all about!

He’s quick, good on the floor… little weak in the air.

Good debut and a nice rest now! haha!

  45. chippy

Going by the rumours doing the rounds on the blogs this morning Warren Barton mentioned on American TV where hes working as a Pundit that Given could well be on his way to us i wouldnt normally pay much attention but im pretty sure Bartons an Arsenal fan,

Got to admit cannot see it myself unless he has it in his contract that he can sign for who he likes at a certain price, As MAn City would never sell to us surely?

And that would leave Schwarzer up shit creek ! Cannot see Wenger doing that to him,

  46. mcmellish

    @ Jaguar

Your surely on the nod mate. Koscielny was solid and Wilshere was average at best. He’s too young and immature (he really must take most of the blame for the goal) to be starting in big games like that one. That being said, I have no doubt he will be a great player for us in 1-3 years time.

  47. Arse&Nose©

The irish at work are trying to convince me Shay Given is a god like octopus hybrid capable of saving anything that comes his way.

I would much prefer the taller , fitter, Scwarzer who can claim crosses.

  48. Pedro

I know we did Jimbo, we had 60% posession and Liverpool looked lost.

I’m asking which chance Clichy created? I can only remember one real effort on goal and that was Vermaelen’s freekick.

It’s not surprising we lacked penetration without Cesc and Robin on the pitch.

  49. woody

Totally agree about Eboue, ive not stopped slatting him for two seasons and here we go again ,OK he goes past people at will,BUT you need a brain in your head as to what to do next, and he hasn’t got one.-He goes down like his been shot, from the slightest contact ,and then goes in to his HOPPING MODE,2 minutes latter his ok-a waste of space.

  50. charliegeorge

Whether or not Jagielka came in and broke down, people will still be calling for AW’s head. But that won’t matter one iota because I can see him spending the next ten years at Arsenal. Until he wins a CL, he will never quit. Hopefully, most of the board members will be dead by then!

  51. gambon

Clichys a defender, as in there to defend.

He was raped yesterday, as he’s been raped for the last 2 years by very average wingers.

He is a huge weaklink in our side.

  52. Ryan L

Jaguar – why the absolute negativity? All week you were predicting a loss, so seeing as that didn’t happen, I would have expected a modicum of happiness !! 🙂

  53. Arsene Nose Best

wow it’s amazing the amount of people creaming themselves still about koscielny, had torres been 100% fit, that ball would of been over his head and torres would of been through to score.wait untill we go to blackburn they guy will be found wanting.

  54. Jimbo

gambon – he’s a fullback. Fullbacks are there to attack AND defend, they have a dual role, particularly at Arsenal where they provide a lot of the width.

And yes, he did defend very poorly in the second half. But he was getting absolutely zero help from Arshavin in midfield.

  55. henry14

Good result for me especially with our 2 best attacking players and DM out – Man U or Chelsea would have been happy with a draw at Anfield first game of the season and they are the bench mark at the moment.

Arsenal have regressed so much that i think it’s actually crazy that some of our fans were thinking we would go there and stuff them 3-1, 3-0, 4-0 i heard from one gooner.

We aren’t a good enough side to do that at anfield these days.

Negative points are – same old, same old.

We will never keep clean sheets in games, which means we will have to score at least 2 every game, we keep possesion well but do fuck all with it and some players just haven’t improved at all.

It’s still very 1 dimensional and easy to defend against.

Crossing is actually embaressing for me – we do well getting into wide positions but defenders love it when they see us out wide because they know we will do nothing with it.

70% of our attacks came from crosses from the fullbacks and we didn’t look like getting 1 goal from them.

Clichy kept getting caught out of position – i would 100% give Gibbs a run in the side.

Summary: Personally i cannot see what’s different from last season, i think we’ll conceed too many goals and finish 4th or 3rd at best.

If he doesn’t get a good keeper and cover for CH he is committing professional suicide.

  56. abnet

i dont think we need Given for me MS is the best Golie choice we have right now Given doesn’t command his area but Schwarzer thats his main quality organizing and dominating his penalty area

  57. henry14

A lot of people are going over the top about Kos by the way – he had a really good game and i was impressed with him – doesn’t get much harder than Anfield first game of the season – but let’s judge him after a few games and not make him out to he the defensive saviour just yet.

100% prefer him to Gallas though – i couldn’t STAND Gallas.

  58. Pedro

Jimbo, he’s very good at dealing with set plays. He’ll be a massive improvement and if we’d had him last year, we could’ve won the league.

  59. chippy

Agree but it just seemed strange, And anyhow ive put Schwarzer in my dream team under the impression he will be at ours ! Starting to wonder if id be better of him staying at Fulham 🙂

  60. gambon

Surely we’re not talking about Clichy being a valuable attacking asset?

He never scores, rarely assists, and generally looks clueless once hes in the attacking third.

  61. Pedro

Henry, I think he’s a lot more intelligent than Gallas. For all his medals, he didn’t do much to improve our defence did he?

  62. charliegeorge

We should have hands down lost that game. It was only Reina’s howler that saved us the game. No Cole for half the game, no Agger for the goal. Let’s get realistic, shall we. There’s absolutely nothing to brag about.

  63. ZARgooner

Its not that oaks are creaming themselves over Koscielny. Nor am i saying that he is world class. I am just looking at his performance yesterday objectively and saying that he did well, not great, but well.

Dont understand WHY people such as yourselves and Jaguar constantly are pessimistic about the guy. Do you want him to fail??? If not then at least give the guy a well done for yesterday.

  64. henry14

Pedro – absolutley i actually never liked Gallas – i am pleased he has gone.

I like the look of Kos – i’m just not going over the top on him just yet.

It was only a few weeks ago everyone was shitting themselves about him being first choice – i still think we need another top quality CH.

Then if he’s good enough he will stay first choice.

  65. gambon

I quite like Schwartzer, and would welcome anyone considering our clowns.

However im not sure why some people are making him out to be the uber organiser and the best keeper ever to deal with a cross.

He’s a fairly good keeper, nothing more.

  66. Pedro

Charlie, not sure how you work that out?

We were by far the better team, we were missing our big guns and we dominated and were let down by our own keeping error.

  67. KM

i’d be open to a swap for Melo and Clichy going the other way. Gibbs has more to his game and can take a man on as well, whereas Clichy is limited imo. However Gibbs has to improve his positional play but that will obviously take time.

I just feel that we have regressed under Wenger and it would have been gr8 if Wenger hadn’t signed an extension because we would have an injection of new blood and direction under a new manager

  68. Chipo

KM – Ozil would’ve been an AWFUL signing.

If there is one area we are strong it is small creative midfielders.. we don’t need any more that’s for sure!

  69. henry14

Charliegeorge – the goal was a bit lucky but if he had hit the post and it hadn’t gone in – then we would be saying how unlucky chamakah was to not score.

I don’t think we deserved to lose that game, i thought a draw was probably fair.

I am just disapointed that when they went down to 10 men they came out and wanted it more than us.

We should have been trying to take advantage of the extra man and should have had them under the kosh for the whole second half.

  70. redanddread

Overall a well reasoned post. However, your description of Liverpool’s goal and that Almunia was beaten by a “soft shot” is a little wide of the mark. Several goalkeepers in the premier league were beaten on the near post this weekend. It happens often………it seems to be some great myth that it’s always a keepers fault when he is beaten on his near post-it happens so often that it makes you wonder. Ngog’s shot was ferocious and right inna di pidgeon hole mate! Almunia was beaten by sheer power and precision.

Diaby played defensive midfielder and did a pretty decent result. He had to temper his attacking play.

A good point to come away with. Whenever you are 1-0 down with seconds to play and you end up scrambling a point,it’s a good result!

Thought we were composed but lacked a real killer pass in the final 1/3. The return of Cecs and RVP should sort that out.

  71. choy

    Morning all..

I can’t seem to join the mini league.

Says the mini league name and pin combination is wrong???!

  72. Jimbo

I watched almost every Fulham game last year, as well as every game in the WC – Fulham sort of became my 2nd team because I go to the cottage every now and then, and believe me, Schwarzer is not the wonderful cross-catcher you’re painting him as. He’s better than either of the cunts we’ve got, no doubt, but he has a tendency to come off his line too slowly, and let things go over his head as well.

He was dreadful under the high ball at the WC, for starters. Then you have to look at some of his flaps against United, against Spurs, against Birmingham.

We should have gone for Hart last season, when we had the chance.

  73. vfabre

They were 10 men (almost 9 with Agger headache) and we were icomplete end outfit. So you’re right, that point is a good one. Our new guys did the job well I tink. Koscielny understood all in the PL rules : no fear, be strong and got a red by struggling ^^ . Chamakh is definitly the guy we needed for a long time. He struggle hard with Skrtel and Carragher for a first gae in Anfield. And He didn’t show any fear. He never gave up ’till the end and put Reina to the edge.

  74. YANGKAMP 10

Very positive post Pedro, nice one.
Overall a decent performance i think – remember it is Anfield, Gerrard is bang in form, and they weould be looking to impress.

However I was disapoint once again how we continue to WASTE possession!?!
The final ball alluded us for much of the game, nobody tried to test the keeper from 25 yards. For 30 minutes in the second half Reina has nothing to do, and yet we were against 10 men!

Issues surrounding crossing remain, albeit accuracy as apposed to tendency.

No sure about starting Jack in one of the 2 man holding positions either, i would have preferred Fringpong in there and Jack in Eboue’s position.

    Gibbs to start next game.!

  75. Pedro

Redanddread, it’s not a myth… it’s a fact. Keepers should not be beaten at the near post especially if they have that angle covered.

Choy, let me have a quick check!

  76. henry14

If Hart is first choice for City – which he is this season then it’s stupid to even talk about getting him.

There is no way Arsenal will get a player of City if they want to keep him.

Hart was never coming – so leaving him aside – who else is out there that would be good enough?

When you actually look at it, there is always a reason not to take a keeper, there isn’t one keeper that i think anyone could name that would be a realistic target that didn’t have negatives.

I think at least with Schwazer he’s the right age, has PL experience and he’s much better than what we have got.

He’ll shout at the defence which is something we badly need.

  77. charliegeorge

Pedro. I’m hearing you. But how many times have we seen Arsenal dominate possession on the park but not where it counts, which is on the scoreboard? Equally, Almunia’s howler was not in the same league as Reina’s. That was a dead-set doozy. Criminal, actually.

  78. KM

We won’t get Given…City will NEVER EVER sell to a rival who’s going to compete for the title/champions lge

However a plausible theory is this:

    Given to Fulham
    Schwarzer to Arsenal

However City will want to recoup their money if they do sell Given which means Fulham will want more money for Schwarzer

A crazy scenario could be that City take Schwarzer and give Given to Fulham

    we would be FUCKED!!!

  79. DB10

What still bothers me with Arsenal, for a while now actually, is the lack of concentration. It takes us ages to get going to begin with. And we switch of immediately after scoring. That where we need the experience heads to keep everybody focused at crucial times like when U come back from a break, after U score….

  80. henry14

Reina was the saviour last week and dropped a clanger this week.

Buffon – we now hear has a bad back and is out for months, so there are clearly problems there which is why Juve were even entertaining selling him in the first place.

Chech is dropping howlers, Green is shite, Given is too small for us IMO – great shot stopper but not what we need……….

  81. Pedro

Charlie, what does it matter regarding howlers?

We deserved a win out of the two and we played well. We more than deserved that point and certainly didn’t get away with anything.

  82. Jimbo

    Schwarzer is, historically, quite fit.

That said, he’s old, and noticably slowing down. If we sign him, and sell Almunia, and THEN subject Schwarzer to our fearsome medical team (when he himself admits he’s carrying injuries), we’ll end up with Fabianski for months at a time when he gets injuerd, and that cunt is the worst keeper in the league, by an absolute mile.

  83. choy

Almunia has a weakness at his near post!

That we all know since the CL final! But he is miles ahead of Fabianski! FACT

  84. Arsene Nose Best

what want to know is why will it take another 10 fucing days for him to be signed, they reaaly are cunting this one out,F.F.S JUST GIVE THEM THE FUCKING MONEY AND BE DONE WITH IT.

  85. tonyadamsisgod

If we wanted Given we could have him. If Given wants out then any team who bids for him could have him, Mancini basically said so. City don’t care about rivals. If it gets to a point where they need to improve they’ll just buy more players!!

  86. Pedro

I’m wondering the same Jimbo. I don’t event think a first division club would take the risk. He’s damaged goods and I’d prefer Mannone or Chesney in at number two.

It’s a big worry, becuase you know at some point, he’ll be called into action and it’ll be in a massive game.

I’d prefer Chesney to get the Carling Cup this year.

  87. ZARgooner

    @Arsene Nose Best
Thanks for your future reading… can you please give me next weeks lotto numbers as well

  88. Pedro

ANB, no chance. We’ll be in the top 3 this year.

Liverpool and Spurs have fragile squads, City could be a menace later on in the year, Chelsea will be the main problem, United never seem to lose their way…

It’ll be a good league regardless.
