Emirates Airlines guarantee to renew the best deal in football, doesn’t that tell you something Ivan!

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So the deal we did with the Emirates was the biggest deal in football at the time, I said it was the dumbest deal in football, I still think it’s the dumbest deal in football and I’m convinced the ‘short termist’ nature of the deal is what cost Edelman his job.

So much at our great club isn’t thought through and is done for short term gain. We sold them the naming rights for 15 years and the shirts for 8 I believe, the whopping $157mil deal seemed good at the time but of course only works out to $8mil a year, which for a brand like ours, is frankly laughable.

And by the time we get to 2019 when the deal ends, many of the board will have gone by then and the deal will be worthless. It’s a bit far off for me to say ‘I told you so’ but it’s a good indicator as to why Arsenal should be calling time on long term deals (Cesc’s contract, project youth) and concentrating on the present. Otherwise they may end up with no fan base to fill their fabulous stadium and some other poor sod will inherit the problem.

Take Club level, that brings in more revenue than the whole of Highbury did, that’s what from 8,000 people, so what do Arsenal do, reward them? No they cut their space down even further which will make their match day experience worse, not better, then they sell their new WM and Foundry clubs like they are enhancing their experience, oh and then they ask them to stump up an extra £10k a season for it, way to treat your fans Arsenal!

Me I would sooner see a few world class players coming in. But then I’m a football fan, if I want a dining experience I’ll go to a restaurant, I go to Arsenal to see a game, strange that.

When someone realises that football, football support and success are not long term projects, they are for now, today then maybe then we will start to win things again.

You see, all this investment in project youth is fine, but then a Man City come along and its for sh*t, because they can just buy their success, like the Mancs always have and the chavs have been recently.

There is no judgement day either, the chavs were 2 weeks away from going tits up and along came Abramovich, Liverpool were in the sh*tter then along come big investors and they will soon have millions to spend, the Mancs are £800mil in debt, but someone will wipe the slate clean because without big name teams, football will be gone, and that will never happen, so financial prudence is one thing, stingyness is something else. It’s short-termism and that will end up killing the club.

Arsenal should act before it’s too late, we can really move on this season, but we only just kept our captain, the warning signs are there, the crazy thing is we really are 2 players short of  a fantastic team, to ignore it again would just be dumb, as dumb as the deal we did with Emirates.

Getting it wrong once is careless, getting it wrong twice is just insane, if we win nothing again this season, Cesc will go, Wenger will walk away and we will have an exodus of players, that will then be seven seasons before we can win a trophy and the crowds will dwindle, the writing is on the wall Arsenal, act now whilst we still can and don’t blow another season of promise for another bag of cash.

Have a great day Grovers only two days till kick off and only today left to get some new faces in, I know the window is still a few weeks away, but what a lift it will be to get a few in before the big game on Sunday.

  1. chozzer

Geoff, so you’ve been looking on the bright side for the last 5 years….hahahahahaha……could’ve fooled me!

  2. Edatom

great post Geoff…..I am keeping my fingers cross hoping we will make those two signings before the window closes.

  3. Teerex

C’mon Arsene, where are the new signings! I’m getting the feeling that it’s another season of disappointment 🙁

  4. chippy

No disrespect but JD when fit should be sold on the bloke is more injury prone than darren anderton and with a threadbare squad we just cannot carry players, We now need a Keeper and 2 more centrehalfs to have any chance,

  5. Poppet

    Good morning, Geoff.
    I couldn’t agree more.
I am now starting to feel queasy about the defence on Sunday (particularly with Stevie Me on a high) – who comes on if one of our centre backs gets injured during the match – Nordveit? Perhaps he would be fine.

  6. Doublegooner

We are a tight Arsed club when it comes to closing a player deal.

Maybe if we had a proper team the stadium would come alive, because I don’t know about anyone else, but I now find it harder to ‘connect’ with the team & this club like I used to.

Maybe its just my age !

  7. jules

” We are only 2 players short of a fantastic team ” ,

how many times have we said that in the last few ( 5 )
    years !

Wenger is now a joke , to go into Sunday with 2 C H ,s is criminal when you have had the whole summer to deal with it . It is now beyond believe how poor this is

  8. Wiseman

So I suppose we can assume that we are definitely getting a new keeper, because Almunia won’t want to stay knowing that we have been trying to sign someone to replace him. Or maybe not?

  9. jules

Every window gets worse in that the problems areas are evermore obvious yet evermore unsolved .

    I thought Wenger said he reconised the defence as an area that needs attention . SO ;

You lose 4 centre halfs , buy 1 and go to Liverpool away with only 2 !!????

    Unfucking believable and un acceptable

  10. Geoff

Well to lose 4 defenders and buy one, makes no footballing sense whatsoever, I mean we had a poor defence last year.

The we have a crock as a back up and that’s it, there is seriously a problem if we don’t buy, football management suicide.

  11. gambon

    “football management suicide”

Well theres the problem, Wenger doesnt give a fuck about how good the team are.

What he does like is that hes managed to spend no money again.

He hasnt had to touch the £30m from Ade & Toure sales, he hasnt tyouched last years £35m profits, he hasnt touched 2009/10s £60m profit that hasnt been announced yet.

Thats a lot of money he’ll be taking a cut of.

  12. A

Geoff the losing 4 and bringing in one is very misleading….

We’re one defender short of what we were last year, but imo we need one more than last year, so depending on nordveit, frimpong (because then song could cover too) we need definitely one centre back, and possibly two because of jd

  13. jules

I just can,t believe this . It actually gets worse with Wenger !! Koss is completely untried in the EPL as it is . Its just pathetic .

  14. MickyDidIt89

    Great post. Thanks.
Looks like I will be the last man standing come Aug 30 saying there is still one day to go.
Yes, it will be absolute suicide not to sign a GK and at least one CB.

  15. A

jules so was vermaelen before the start of last season, so was vidic before utd signed him, so was carvalho before utd signed him, hangeland before fulham signed him.

  16. gambon

By your logic Ian Wright should still be upfront.

Why isnt Ian Wright still upfront? Because players lose their abilities as they age……ditto for Wenger.

  17. chippy

The difference A was that Verm had Gallas to play alongside who had played for years in the PL now weve got a bloke playing his first season alongside someone thats played one season its fucking criminal,

  18. jules

And who plays if Koss or TV get a knock A ?

    Sendy , Gallas , Campbell , Silvestre = 4

    Koss = 1

    what is miss leading ?

  19. Geoff

A, how is that misleading? We let go Silvestre, Gallas, Campbell and Senderos. We bring in Koscielny and Djourou is injured again.

Don’t say Senderos was out on loan because he’s the reason we didn’t buy 5 years ago.

We don’t need Song as cover, he’s a DM, Nordveit’s too young and has been playing right back, we shipped too many goals last season by Wenger’s own admission.

So defend that, it’s mental. We have 2 centrebacks and one of them is unproven and lightweight.

  20. gnarleygeorge9

    Evening all

When you analyse that post all you can come up with is how relevant it is to the very heart of where The Arsenal is @ 13 August 2010. Geoff, you will never sway the stubborn hired help.

They are do ing a good job, but they are not doing a great job. & hence the state of The Arsenal trophy cabinet. Void of more recent spoils 😉 Oh Ho Hum!

  21. Moray

    First? Doh!

I agree entirely, Geoff. The Arsenal attitude has always been old fashioned. Sometimes this is laudable, other times it costs us heavily. In the grubby present, football instead seems to reward those with sticky banknotes.

And not just football – look how the Government is penalising those with savings in the bank in favour of those foolish enough to take on too much debt by reducing interest rates to near nothing.

We have spent the last five seasons trophyless to reduce our debt. Very noble, on paper. However our new owner will simply buy up the club and reinstate all of the debt again. Just like Hicks and Gillett at the Binnys and that ludicrous leprechaun guy at Man Utd. And actualy Abramovich did the same until the rules were changed. Then we will have wasted 5 years. Or more.

  22. chippy brady

I am sick of the current administration at arsenal.
They constantly try to pull the wool over their supporters eyes.
They always try and come out with vague optimistic statements about the future and how rosy it is going to be.
Well, the future is here and I as a supporter of arsenal for 25 of my 31 years am not happy,
I was assurred my patience would be rewarded, well it hasn’t. The longer time goes by without winning,
The longer I won’t spend a penny investing in arsenal.
I am ashamed to wear an arsenal jersey and have not purchased one in the last two years.
Sick of been embarressed by drogba and fletcher(even ji sun park looks amazing against us) I am sick of the
Excuses afters defeats to teams like bolton and stoke, claiming they bullied us. We all know
How to beat a bully is to stand up to them. It is time arsenal to get a backbone, show pride in the club
And respect the support you have.

    Totally disillusioned

  23. timao

hey so what if koscielny is “lightweight – since when did weight have anything to do with being able to defend?

  24. A

chippy I agree, but verm took to the prem like a duck to water so should be able to settle in koscielny easily enough.

jules the fact that senderos and campbell were never at the club at the same time?

so in terms of playing staff in the first team squad, it’s

    Gallas, Silvestre, Sendy/Sol gone = 3

    Koscielny, JD added = 2

One down, as I don’t count Nordveit as a full addition

  25. Honest Bill

We do desperately need another centre half. I just can’t believe that Wenger would take that big a risk.

I fully expect Spahic to sign soon..

  26. jules

No , he should spend some proper money on proper players that are obviously needed . He even actually reconised and highlighted the weak areas himself , an act of genious that no one else here saw may I add !

But has failed to correct it . its not good enough .

  27. timao

i could and have already on here named 5 of the greatest defenders in history who are koscielny’s weight or thereabouts. we are talking about football not boxing

  28. chippy

And the whispers coming out are that if Schwarzer is not signed in time Wenger as you said will be going with the Pole in goal come sunday well if that happens heaven fucking help us we will be a goal down before we even kick off, Almunias shit but hes a far safer bet than that twat,

  29. Arsenal Tom

good post although why would wenger walk away from the easiest job in football? he’s already considered a legend here by many and can do whatever he wants with no pressure from the board to achieve anything.

plus what’s the worst that can happen if he does go? we don’t win anything for a few years!?? oh……

  30. Honest Bill

I’m really not comfortable with Fabianski startinng any game for us. He need s to go on loan and develop some confidence. We just can’t afford to play him.

  31. gambon

The thing is, every point you’re making is saying how we can cover for the loss of Gallas etc.

The problem is we dont need to do that, we need to improve dramatically.

Can you honestly say, with the changes we’ve made, that we’re gonna concede 30% less goals.

    Its not realistic.

  32. chippy

Indeed he did but its asking far to much of him in my view, Instead of just concentrating on his game like he could last season hes now got to worry about his partners positioning, If you go back to his quotes last year he couldnt praise Gallas enough for his help in settling him in,

  33. jules

JD added ?? what is he like a new signing , hes injured anyway ! He as been around for years so how is he an addition ?

Geoff has answewred it A .

as I said , who plays there if Koss or Tv take a knock then ??

  34. A

In the squad we had four centre backs all last season pretty much.

    Gallas, Vermy, JD, Silvestre

JD got injured so it was

    Gallas, Vermy, Senderos, Silvestre,

Senderos demanded a move so it was

    Gallas, Vermy, Campbell, Silvestre,

We lost Gallas, Campbell, Silvestre in the summer, and brought in Koscielny, got JD back, so it’s now

    Koscielny, Vermy, JD, ????????

and imo we could do with additional cover too on top of whoever fills the ????????

  35. A

yeah gambon we need to improve, and we have no idea whether that’ll happen or not just yet.

It isn’t as simple as improving on gallas though as an individual player, the defence needs to improve as a unit, as a collective, and the entire team needs to do the same defensively.

  36. chippy

Mate i dont, But someone sent me that youtube clip of our Keepers mistakes last year set to the clown music and i had a change of opinion they made basic mistake after basic mistake and anyone would be an improvement, I think i even stated id rather have a one armed amputee, 🙂

  37. gnarleygeorge9

Schwarzer @ ‘Pooville would be the difference between getting no points, & coming away with a draw. But once again Le Ebeneezer Scrooge, the man who gets more out of a driving a bargain won’t act in time.

This Fixture has the potential to be a pivotel as the draw @ Manure, when van Pissed as a Boy missed that penalty.

  38. Pedro

Timao, at the moment, in Europe, weight has a lot to do with top class defending.

There are anomalies, but footballers are bigger, stronger and faster than they’ve ever been.

So you can name exceptions to the rule… but at the top two clubs in every European league, the defenders are heavier than ours and older than ours.

    That’s compelling stuff.

  39. chris

if we have to play one of them it has to been manuel or chezzers, i never want to see the inept cretin in goal for us ever again

  40. goonerT1m

balotelli on his way to city for a medical!- i remember the days Arsenal used to make big signings, crowds of excited fans outside Highbury!

  41. Swedish Gun

    great post Geoff!!

give city what they want for Kompany and/or De Jong

it´s desperate times for us and they can´t keep all of them and don´t care about the doe

with schwarzer and kompany we may salvage the season

add De Jong or Inler and we willprolly go unbeaten lol!

  42. arsenesabemejor

Where are all these Djourou is seriously injured rumours coming from? I did a search and can find nothing about it

  43. Maverick

I think you should leave Djourou’s name permanently in the “Le Rosick” list. For every minute played he spends 100 mins in the treatment table.
He is again injured and it is the hamstring this time around.

  44. Pedro

    arsenesabemejor, probably an assumption.

If he is serious, we won’t find out until after the transfer window closes like last year.

  45. A

I don’t recall that day at all GoonerT1m?!

    Must’ve been before my time.

Highest profile signing we’ve made since I’ve been a bonefide Gooner would have to be Arshavin

  46. goonerT1m

A – How can you defend the indefensible ?, its nothing less than scandalous if he doesn’t bring in the needed quality. its a lost cause gabbling on all day the way you do

  47. OxfordGooner

jules so was vermaelen before the start of last season, so was vidic before utd signed him, so was carvalho before utd signed him, hangeland before fulham signed him.

All the players listed above had more than one years experience of ‘top’ level football and some had international experience as well, the issue with Kos is that he has just one seasons experience in a much weaker league. I am not knocking the lad, he looks like a good prospect but he needs to get used to the pace of the EPL, the physicality of it and definitely needs to bulk up to be able to compete here. Throwing him in the deep end at the bindippers may well knock his confidence so hard he never recovers. Obviously it could go either way on Sunday and none of us really know how it will turn out but I expect the vast majority would be much more confident if we had bought the GK, CH & CDM we so obviously need.

Not picking on your comments specifically A but you named those players.

  48. gambon

So what were our problems last season?

    1- Weak defence
    2- Injuries

    What are our current problems?

    1- Weak defence
    2- Injuries

So how can Arsene not be sacked, he has yet again decided not to address our problems, it is professional negligence.

  49. herbert

    To everyone

Today I wrote to Arsenal TV and cancelled my subscription

    I also wrote

“The reason is my disappointment with Arsenal’s performance during the last couple of seasons and the lack of proper investment in the squad”

I do not write this because I think others should do the same. Arsenal need the money of course.

But I have had enough at this point and do not want to spend good money for a bad value

  50. chippy

Cheers Gnarley yours is mighty fine too,

CG sat behind me and the old man when the Donkey won the Derby and to say he hates our Neighbours with as much passion as any Gooner would be an understatment 🙂

How highly do you rate Schwarzer ?

    chris, couldnt agree more,

  51. Pedro

A, it wouldn’t have been before your time.

Dennis Bergkamp there was loads of hoopla, Thierry and Suker had a press conference… Glenn Helder arrived to rapturous applause!

  52. A

Bergy I’d have Fabianski over Almunia everytime, but I’m concerned about it on Sunday. Hope we can just get through that game, and by Blackburn in two and a bit weeks we’ll have Schwarzer cemented in goal, and another centre back in the squad, along with maybe even another DM, although that isn’t so likely sadly….

  53. gnarleygeorge9

TBH chippy he is too old @ 37 years old, but in his day he was Top 5 world wide. But even @ 37, he has more poise than the clowns residing @ The Emirates now.

  54. gambon

Amaury Bischoff is the biggest signing I remember.

Or maybe it was just the build up that was big, as Arsene said “The fans will be reassured by what they see” a few days before signing the clown.

  55. Pedro

Gambon, my Liverpool supporting mate has been sending me the same summer e-mail every year for a while and he has been telling me to post one of Le Groves articles from last year as a new post this year to see if anyone notices.

In fact, he was telling me to do that last year as well.

  56. chippy

Haha Remember the excitment when we signed what we thought would be a goalscoring midfielder after he scored a cracker and his country won the Euros,

The Legend that was J J,

I was there the Day Jenson Scored 🙂

  57. gnarleygeorge9

    What is it with Geoff?

He writes a quality piece then, what, heads for the 1st tee 😉 Geoff we all want to talk about what you have said 😛

  58. A

I wouldn’t call them high profile though Pedro, certainly no more than our recent signings, I’d say that Arshavin is probably the highest profile signing we’ve made in the club’s history.

Things have changed in terms of press conferences etc, but that’s changed throughout football, it’s now club’s official tv channel or just generally pages of photos on websites etc, rather than a press orientated thing.

  59. jules

lol Glen helder !! I remember that signing ! The fastest thing you had seen on two legs but unfortunately not with ball .

  60. Bergy

Dont agree A. Flappy allow way more silly goals.aweful at nearly everything. Al maybe tad safer ,but stil way te poor for a 3rd place trophy side

  61. Swedish Gun

Fabianski is the worst of our keepers at the moment
his confidence is shot and that effects the whole team

I hope szczesny gets the nod, so we don’t panic as soon as they get a corner!

  62. A

Pedro less high profile than Arshavin….

Arshavin arrived on the back of a great Euros, load of hype, and wherever he came in world player of the year.

Bergkamp arrived as someone who had struggled in Serie A

  63. dennisdamenace

For sale, one trophy cabinet, only one owner, hardly used, pristine condition, needs good cleaning……..

  64. finestcuts

Morning all, dangerous times ahead, 4 centre halves out, one in, Djourou is crocked (surprise) leaving us a choice of Vermaelen, Kościelny and Nordveit (Song is unavailable as well).

Schwarzer rumours are gathering pace, supposedly a deal has already been done and it’s TBA very very soon.

Not pleased at all about the dealings in this transfer window, all the talk and hype was there at the beginning, that we can overtake Chelsea and now……..we’re seriously short, NOTHING has been sorted out in defence, Kościelny is clearly not ready yet, if he does dazzle from the start it will be against all odds.

  65. chippy

Was Helders first game against Notts Forest ? seem to remember him murdering the fall back but after that game he seemed to lose the ability to control a ball 🙂

  66. Moray

“The fans will be reassured by what they see” haha

    I had forgotten that.

Reassured perhaps that he doesn’t know what he’s doing any more?

  67. gnarleygeorge9

I remember when Denis Bergkamp signed. It made all the headlines down here. I thought @ the time. “Wow!! this guy is quality, I’d better start following The Club more closely now”. Looking back now, him arriving and/or going to The Arsenal was the catalyst to what is now seen as the Wenger Years.

Arsenal need a big signing. It will signal to all Gooners intent that a new era is being launched. Rise up fellow Red & White Army people 😈

  68. Pedro

Do me a favour A… Dennis Bergkamp was proven to be one of the best players in the World, he was an international for a recognised footballing nation and he’d won the Champions League.

Far more high profile than Arshavin and arguably our greatest ever signing.

  69. A

I dunno Swedish, Mannone is comfortably the worst imo, and I just don’t want to see Almunia play again. Wouldn’t want to throw Szczesny in just for the one game when a new keeper is coming in as it could kill his confidence!

Yeah jules to be fair actually hadn’t thought of Sol, that was HUGE. Still remember that feeling when it came out we’d got him, amazing

  70. chippy

Shit me didnt add either of them two ! Good point they were both massive at the time !!

    How about Clive Allen lol

  71. A

Pedro I agree about our greatest ever signing, but when he arrived it wasn’t THAT big, because of his failing somewhat at Inter

  72. Pedro

Not to mention at the time, he was the 2nd most expensive player in the world.

I must admit, I didn’t know that… but his £12mill fee to Inter was pushed him to those levels. And he’d won the UEFA Cup.

He just didn’t like the way the Italians invaded his privacy.

  73. jules

morning , by the way , gallas , send , silv and campbell is not 4 and koss is not 1

    just ask A ! lol

  74. Pedro

Chippy, me too… he was a superb player.

I think I was most disappointed when Kluivert and the De Boer brothers went elsewhere.

Remember those days? When we were always sniffing around top players?

  75. A

Yeah he was when he went to Inter Pedro, but they then sold him cut price because he didn’t live up to expectations in Italy…. Wasn’t just the privacy, the league and team just didn’t suit him at the time, though he could’ve been a star in any league the way he was with us

  76. chippy

Watch that you tube clip thats the one i was on about fucking comical, Im going to be humming that bastard tune again now !!!

  77. gambon

    DB never won the CL.

He was a superstar though. Was considered the best young player in the world when Inter signed him.

  78. A

jules do you genuinly not get how senderos and campbell weren’t at the club at the same time so can’t be counted as two losses?!

yeah pedro i remember that re kluivert, was so excited about potential of his signing

  79. afc53

I cant get my head around this Schwarzer deal if it would have happened 5 years ago maybe but hes 37 surely he only has one season maybe two at a push its the same with Given hes 34

I would personally keep Almunia and buy a quality CB & DM someone like Chiellini & Felliani or dust off the wallet and get someone like Howard for 6-7m

  80. Ryan L

Pedro that weight and age thing is interesting stuff and you would thought it should be even more compelling to a man(ager) who is supposedly obsessed with stats and data !!

Going into the opening game of the season with only 2 fit recognised CB’s is mis management of the highest order !! That’s before we even start looking at the GK position.

Thats from a man who whilst isn’t an AKB, has always remained positive to Wenger – mis management, no if’s or but’s and no excuses – totally unacceptable for a club of this size, stature and supposed ambitions.

  81. OxfordGooner

I find it almost laughable that our defence is being aloud to crumble around us while AW sits around fingers in ears going la, la, I can’t hear you like a petulant child. Wasn’t he a defender in his very short and unimpressive playing career? How shit must he have been to totally fail to understand defence, defending and the necessary qualities of a good defensive player?!

Since he has been building his own teams (post inherited players) our defence and the number of goals conceded has got worse season on season…

We shout and jump up and down about it because we love Arsenal and it hurts us to see this happening, not because we are glory hunters… We love & support Arsenal not Arsene that is the great difference between ‘us’ and the AKB’s. The manager is a facilitator, he is not the club. We will give any manager who shows the same love & commitment as us our full support, unfortunately Arsene just isn’t showing the love any more, if he was he’d be fixing the very obvious & very real problems we have. If it is really the board as the AKB’s would have us believe then any manager worth the salt would walk away rather than have their reputation damaged by years of failure – the point of competition is that there are winners and losers, we don’t win any more Arsene can tell us we win the third place trophy all he likes but it will never be true…

Sorry guy and gals, rant over ;o/

  82. chippy

Indeed mate, At one stage i thought we were going to buy the whole Dutch squad 🙂 De Boer was so nearly an Arsenal player, if he hadnt threatened to go on strike to force the move through he probably would have been 🙁

  83. Geoff

I remember signing Charlie Nicholas, Tony Woodcock, Malcolm MacDonald, I an Wright, David Seaman fucking hell I could go on all day, that’s not even talking about Cliff Bastin, George Eastham, A, you don’t know a lot mate, honestly sometimes it’s best to say nothing.

  84. gnarleygeorge9

Laurel & Hardy are about what our keepers are. Oh for a Stan “Between the posts” Hartley 😛 or a GiGi Boofhead

Maybe it was just me then Pedro – I was pleased when we got Bergkamp but wasn’t really really excited.

Less so than Sol, less so than Arshavin, and less so than the potential signing of Kluivert for all that time!

very funny but sad at the same time for me .

The worst thing is wenger shaking his head when it is he who has failed to address the situation yet again .

Morning Jules, I guess A would not count Senderos because he was he only played 1 game all season, but still the loss of a player. 2 out 1 in is bad enough.

Huh Geoff, I said I don’t know about high profile signings before my time – all of those were well before my time!

no finest – it’s the fact that campbell only came in to take senderos’ place in the squad, so they count as the same person in terms of numbers, it’s one defender position that needs to be filled/replaced

Great post mate, Ive been on the Fence with regards Wenger and will remain so until the transfer door slams shut, Although i havent agreed with alot of what hes done over the last 2 seasons hes always had plenty of credit in the bank so to speak.

But this summer so far has been a complete and utter disaster with regards the squad, As you say how we can go into the first game of the season at Liverpool as we are is a complete mystery if things are not sorted id go along with the

Maybe its best to move him on lot !!
