T-day 2009 – Whose coming in then… a striker, midfielder or defender?

by & filed under Uncategorized.

Good morning Grovers!

I’d like to sit here and tell you that we’re currently in talks with a tough tackling centre midfielder to compete with Song and Denilson, I’d also like to tell you we’re in for a young powerful centre back who can compete for a place this year… and maybe striker could come in.

Sadly I can’t… this could be one of the most miserable T-days of the last 4 years. There’s no one on the horizon… no leaks and no airport sightings. I think the only player who may have a chance of turning up at Emirates is Chamakh… but with Bordeaux playing hard ball, that seems ever more unlikely.

Last year I stayed up late with the Grovers to see if we were going to sign anyone… and we didn’t. This year, I don’t know whether I’ll bother. I still think Wenger is putting the season on the line with a bare bones squad again… I think he needs a defensive midfielder and a centre back… but if he has the confidence to roll with it, we’ll just have to bite our bottom lip and hope the performances continue as they have been.

Geoff told me someone high up at Arsenal told him that Arsenal were planning to be debt free within the next two years… could the millions we were paid for Ade and Toure find their way to paying off another chunk of the loan? We’ll see when the financials get released in October!

I do wish Arsene would stop whining about ‘anti-football‘… it’s a bit embarrassing when the coach of Arsenal complains that teams don’t play to Arsenal’s strengths. The English game has never been solely about one touch short passing… if you look through all the leagues, there is always an element of crunching tackles and physical play. I didn’t think Arsenal were bullied the other day and I thought the fact that we were the better team would have been enough for most fans to take away from the game. Now he’s brought up the bullying affair again and people like Ian Wright are jumping on the ‘Arsenal wimps’ bandwagon… which is completely untrue in my eyes.

In other news, Eduardo is to be hung drawn and quartered at high noon next Tuesday over his gross sporting misconduct last week. In other more hilarious news… McGeady was sent off this weekend for diving. Even funnier than that is Gordon Smith’s refusal to condemn McGeady despite rubber stamping Eduardo’s impending execution. What a hypocrite!

So, we’ve got two weeks of minimal news stories… I would guess 90% of what comes out of newsnow will be Adebayor related… we’ll have 100 excuses as to why he was so shocking last year, how it was the fans fault he fluffed his line, the fans fault he strayed offside 8 times a game, how it was Willy G’s fault he head butted Nik B and how it was the ball boys fault he ended up sleazing himself out to Milan for a whole summer… what a joyous two weeks we’re in for!

See you in the comments!

    the mirror spoke at Matiudi.

I dont get it, we need a beast.

I would still like to see Vieira back, potentially Hangerland, so Vermaleun could play DM.

  2. ethangunner

we wont get a cd .. we have the 2 regulars
    then ….

you got fish face – the swiss brothers, song touted as the new cd in last weeks guide and
nordveits and god knows who ever else lined up down the street to even make the bench .

then you have gibbs and traore .
who are just sitting back waiting for there chance ..

definitely a DM + striker would be a treat

    (plus a goal keeper)

but you know what we will end up with ..

    FA ….

you know what the board will end up with ?

29 mil in there sky rocket !

  3. Sabeel Indian Gunner

it is good to have rosicky bak too, like a new signing

My only serious hope is that we dont get any injuries in internationals

  4. wenger's boss

wenger didnt even sign 2-3 players that he said we are needing without selling anyone, and he sell 2 of them and buy one, what about depth of squad.
I m afraid we are turning into liverpool, great starting lineup,no backup.

  5. Doublegooner

The Arsenal Transfer money box continues – £30m + in profit.

Will it be spent on a couple of players ( unless we can get them for boot sale fees) NO !

Will it be added to the profit last year & used to reduce or cap season ticket prices ?? NO !

Will it be going towards the property debt – probably.

Arsene, you might be saying Diaby can be the new PV4, well Vieira was already awesome at 23 – Diaby is light years away. We needed more players & still do.

  6. Jay20h

I dont think any deals will be struck today. Cannot believe that piece of over rated shit David Bentley migth be going to Man city. Hughes, you really are a prick.

  7. patthegooner

If we are not even looking at players today, wouldn’t it be nice if Wenger just said so on Arsenal.com instead of wasting my entire fucking day pressing F5.

But then again, even if he did, people would still say he is just saying that to cover his tracks on a secret deal so I would keep pressing F5 anyway!!!!!!

I hate transfer deadline day, it is usually like your shittest christmas where that big present you were convinced was a Millenium Falcon turned out to be the worlds biggest jigsaw.

  8. patthegooner

And I bet that if we dont buy anyone today, that 30m dissapears and does not get added onto the transfer funds next summer………

  9. Sabeel Indian Gunner

According to wenger i think, when he plays 4-3-3 with full strength

    Backups 4 Song – Nasri,denilson,ramsey

    Backups 4 Gallas,Verminator- Djourou,Senderos,Silvstre

  10. patthegooner

Mark Gooner, that could be the best news of the day.

Keep Senderos and get rid of that cunt Silvestre. Disgrace that he ever wore an Arsenal Shirt.

  11. patthegooner

5pm gives you time to calm down your anger levels at Wenger for not spending……again, so you can get some sleep.

  12. patthegooner

Niko Kranjcar to the spuds for……….

2 fucking million. Think that is a bargain, he is better than that, and I seem to remember the value being in excess of 10 when he was linked with us last summer.

Ha Ha WB. More like he is scouring video footage of the Peruvian u-11 leagues looking for the next best thing.

he wouldnt be doing that pat , it would stifle
his up and coming talent like eboue – diaby and song etc .

fucking delusional if he thinks them players as back up to the starting 11 will win us anything again this season …

last season i said it wouldnt take a year for nik b to leap frog ade , well i didnt expect wenger to pocket the money he made on his sale thou !

  14. charybdis1966

From what I make of Ian Wright’s comments are can’t see what’s wrong in saying that our players have to protect themselves as they’ll clearly get no help form referees.
However we all know that the first time one of us makes a tackle it usually gets followed by a yellow. Case in point , Saturday: Mank fouls 22, yellows 3. Us, 15 fouls 6 yellows. So we get a yellow after 2.5 fouls and they get one after 7.33. when you factor in how many fouls the cnut Dean didn’t call against the manks it’s obvious to anyone whenever we do tackle back we get disproportionately penalised. This makes me worry as what is the best way to counter the policy the manks(and the Boltons, Blackburns, Stokes) of the world employ to stop us, i.e the succession of cynical fouls to break up our play.

  15. Sparrow

    Morning all,

If Bentley goes to Man City today does that mean we will get some money as we have a sell on fee clause??

  16. patthegooner

    True Ethan

Do you think he will get to a point where he won’t buy a talented 26yr old Midfielder as it would kill the progression of a 30 yr old Denilson?

  17. rob green

Wenger in insane if he thinks we are good enough to win the title!! With the current team!! What happens when we lose eboue and song!! We have a lot of injury prone players!! We are going to fall short once again!!

  18. charybdis1966

Good one PDT, that would be right for my pseudonym.
However Chary the Peroni lightweight you some see at the S+B pre match was actually born in Amritsar.

  19. patthegooner

    Yeah Sparrow,

It will be a case of we tried to buy Matuidi but they would not accept our £1m offer, so it is not our fault. But I believe in this team, they have desire….and are a year older.

  20. Gunner90

Look at our injury list already – most are long term. All teams play against us in the same way as Manure so our injury list will always be long throughout the season. Arshavin is now carrying an injury and Spain will probably play Fabregas regardless of whether he is fit or not. The £30 million net profit from transfers will go towards paying off our debt -I just wish Arsenal would be honest about it. No additional players coming in means another season with a weakened small squad and no cups.

  21. Arindam@KOL

“we’ll have 100 excuses as to why he was so shocking last year, how it was the fans fault he fluffed his line, the fans fault he strayed offside 8 times a game, how it was Willy G’s fault he head butted Nik B and how it was the ball boys fault he ended up sleazing himself out to Milan for a whole summer… what a joyous two weeks we’re in for!”

capped off by an Ade brace at the end of it.

  22. Big Dave

I can tell you that no one is arriving, FUCK ALL.
And that my freinds is a joke an utter joke
we take the money for kolo/ade and just put it towards our debt
we wont even go to 8mill for Matuidi or chammachk
spuds do more buisness then us, what is worrying is that when players like Arshavin come out and say we need to strengthen and we dont, he will get pissed off and leave, our transfer policy is one big fucking joke, what do these directors want? they must give wenger the money ffs

  23. patthegooner

I would be happy with that today Rob,

At this point I would be happy with Niko Kranjcar for 2m

I still cant believe that fee!!!!!!

only if denilson continues to sign 1 year deals 🙂

  25. Jam

A few signings would be great but i wont hold my breath. Dont think we’re signing anyone. Besides, we shouldve wrapped our transfers a long time ago.

  26. patthegooner

    Big Dave,

    No signings = no silverware.

And that will lead to RVP, Arsh, Cesc, Sagna, Clichy all looking at the exit door next summer. You have to match theses players ambitions if you want to keep them.

  27. Sparrow

Yeah, I can hear Wenger know… “We went for a couple of players but things didn’t pan out. The transfer market is over inflated due to Man City’s spending power… blah, blah, blah!!”

I love how excited the reporters in SSN get, finally they get to show their ugly mug’s on TV!!!

  28. Arse&Nose

Matuidi will come if anybody does
purely because his club have signed Gelson fernandes a like for like replacement.

  29. james

I dont think we will buy AW is to obsessed with trying to prove people wrong he doesnt care for us guys and the quicker u get this in you heads is the better

  30. Sabeel Indian Gunner

new rumours this morning from bbc live

“1007: Arsenal are linked in some quarters with a move for AC Milan’s fearsome midfield general Gennaro Gattuso. Does the fact that his wife’s Scottish make the move more likel”

  31. rob green

I think a few players will leave if we don’t win anything this season!! I think this is Wenger last season to delivery and he is digging his own grave if he doesn’t buy!!

    Breaking News

PHW spends £30m on exoctic fish for the Diamond Club.

more like PHW puts down 29 mil deposit on a new north London development ..

you cant blame him really he only owns 1 % of the shares , once the yank or russian buy him out he will have to apply for the pension

  33. Arse&Nose

Gattuso is old and past it, he could not get close to denilson and song when we played Milan. I’d rather have Vieira back than gattuso, the presence and experience vieira would bring would be worth it alone.

  34. raif

wre not signing anyone today. im not bovering to this time..

THO.. the ONLY GOOD NEWS i heard on SPN was that Aston Villa was Looking at Mikael Silvestre, i hope its true. as that means one Less Liability in out ranks

  35. Sparrow

Also Hull are interested in Senderos, so if we get rid of Fishface and Senderos then we have to sign a CB…. Wishful thinking I know!!!

  36. sir henry norris

That’s the time for all other clubs our transfer window activities began and ended when we signed Vernaelen.

Chamakh is signing for West Ham. Let all go home and remeber and revel in the fact that we have made in excess of £27m from our summer transfer dealings.

and if you fail to do that , then you have to feed them a line of bullshit a mile wide as only wenger can do ,to make them sign an extension…

thats why the board love him ..
thats why the board come out and get nasty when any player ever wants to leave !

we all know the reality here …
providing we get passage into the C.L every season wenger is safe as houses !

and thats a fucking fact , and thats where the buck stops !

  38. Ali Saljuk

    Ideally today :

    Ins : Chamakh (7m) + Matuidi (6m) + Subotic (10m)

Outs : Silvestre (1m to take him off us) + Senderos (6m)

    Meanwhile in the real world…

    tumbleweeds flies by……..

  39. goonermichael

We won’t see any new faces today. The only good thing is we don’t have to stay glued to our screens again til 1AM

  40. Arse&Nose

Senderos is staying to run down his contract, unless a bid from a champions league team comes in. I have a sneaky feeling bayern munich might bid for him.

  41. patthegooner

I dont think they can A&N. I think the European deadline passed at midnight last night.

They can sell but they cant buy.

  42. Big Dave

Gattuso story comes from ian wright article in the sun thats all, no more then that.
that is what im saying no signings no ambition and players will leave us, either wenger dont want to fork out the dosh for players or the board are holding him back, either way we need answers
fiszman does f all, kroneke is in us most of the time and the russian they dont want near the club at all, no wonder the board get abused at the shareholders meetings

  43. gazzap

I think Almunia is incredibly lucky that Fabianski is not fit. It means wenger doesn’t have to make a decision about dropping the number 1 keeper. That means Almunia can come back in for the next match, have a half decent match and then keep his place. If Fabi had been fit, I reckon the pressure would have been on Manuel.
I think it was his mistake that cost us the game. without that first goal, man u were simply not in the game. it wasn’t even a great ball – that could have happened against Stoke or Sunderland.

  44. ethangunner

is this taking the piss or what ?

Arsenal look set to seal a deal with FK Bubamara for Serbian starlet Veljko Batrovic, according to the News of the World.

The 15-year-old, who is comfortable either as a striker or a winger, has already undertaken a trial at the Gunners’ Hertfordshire training base and now looks set to snub interest from the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan in favour of joining Arsene Wenger’s academy.

The youngster’s agent, Milan Calasan, is quoted as saying that Batrovic is destined to become a great and hinted he could move to the Emirates.

“One thing is certain, whether the player goes with Wenger or not, he will become a great player,” claimed Calasan.

Should the report prove to be correct, it would reveal that Wenger’s dedication to bringing young players to north Londoner shows no sign of abating.

  45. PDT

Does anyone know where Pederson is and whether he is any good now? I used to like him a few seasons back…don’t know if he is any good now…

  46. Big Raddy

We clearly need a new Keeper.

We can do OK with what we have outfield but MA is not good enough to win the EPL.

Would we have conceded on Saturday with Givens in goal? It is time for AW to grasp the nettle , accept MA is shite and sign a top International keeper.

  47. Keith

I just think it would be better for all concerned if Wenger came out and said that he wasn’t going to sign anyone and then we wouldn’t have all this heartache.

However perhaps deals are being done on the quiet……and pigs may fly!

  48. lc

I blame you Arsene Wenger, not Flecher. What’s about Patric Viera? He wasn’t always winning balls fairly. You’ve made my belove Arsenal an easy praw today; that’s why we will still lose against teams like Hull, Stoke, Fulham, Chelsea and even the current Spurs of Harry Rednapp. You listen to no one; only your own hype. We are in the fith year of a wrong policy that keeps Arsenal very weak. You’ve made us far too easy to bully, because with Denilson, Fabregas, Ramsey in midfield, any team is hungry to have a go at us. Can you please, AW admit for once that you are wrong? It doesn’t work. Why can’t you have the courage to admit this? Our current problem is not so much about, we don’t have the money to buy experience players; it’s more to do with your personal EGO that having small men on pich will deliver fast flowing football; which in ideal world, is not wrong; but we are in a real world where one plus one is not necessarily two. You’ve got to take account of the overhall team dynamic with your opposition of the day.
How long are you going to keep challenging the genal opinion on this Arsene?

  49. gazzap

senderos will only go to a big-ish club. He would go to a top 8 club in any of the top European leagues, if he was promised a start every week. Doubt he would go to Hull. But wenger wont often play a player he knows for a fact is leaving for free at the end of the season. Wenger will only use him when he has to.
senderos will then go for free to a relatively big club (not as big as Arsenal though!)
But then he wants to play in the world cup – and if he doesn’t play football then he stands no chance.

  50. rob green

    Almunia is sh*t!! A

t the end of last season I honestly though Wenger might realise now that we need to bring in a few players!!

  51. rob green

lc – Exactly!! Wenger is mad to think teams are going to let me play the pretty football. If a manger thinks going in hard and rattling is us is going to help them win the game then they are going to do it!! And it works!!!

  52. ArsenalKenya

  53. gazzap

I think wenger is looking at the players coming back from injury and thinking – I have a big enough squad.

he probably does in numbers but there are 2 worries. one is that we have had a very injury prone squad for 4 years now – there is no reason to think we can suddenly improve in that department with the same players. in particular, I still dont think you can count on a season from Rosicky.
secondly, we dont have sufficient cover in every area of the pitch. the DM position is not well covered. Den can do a job there but he is not really a proper DM like Song.

We have an abundance of attacking midfielders. wenger is looking purely at numbers, but I feel the balance of the squad is still not enough to win the league.

Even if we buy Chamakh today, (which we wont), I dont think it would make any difference to our chances of winning the league. Chelsea will win the title. we are just fortunate that liverpool and Man u have weakened – at least it means we can compete for second.

  54. kelsey

    Morning all,

it appears we made another 28million just getting into the group stage of the CL.

i have made my feelings quite clear before about Almunia, if he gets injured our back up is an untried PL keeper in Manone. If Gallas or Vermaelen get injured or suspended no one left of the same standard to cover.

How can rosicky be picked for the Czech republic when he can hardly stand on two legs.

Theo’s few days out has turned into weeks.

not very satisfactory, when we have started well, the defence looks sharper and is pressing well, and all we have in reserves at the moment is Silvestre,Senderos and Djorou, and Gibbs who qualifies as a good stand in.

No other top team would have one fit keeper on the books, until the end of october.

Just a couple of signings and we would be fine, but it seems remote.

  55. skandibird

SSN are saying that Chamach possibly going to West Ham as they have now agreed to sell one of their defenders to Aston Villa freeing up money for WH. Well, I suppose that one will slip through our fingers then? Who else are we NOT buying?? No-one? What a surprise!!!! The pundits were saying yesterday that Arsenal need to bolster the spine of the team: Central Defender, Defensive Midfielder and a Striker (to replace Ade), I tend to agree so why can’t Arsene see that???? Surely we are not going to carry on with current squad without strengthening with some bruisers??

  56. SharkeySure

Its not bullying or not being strong enough….Arsene is complaining about the PERSISTENT fouling !!! He rightly has a big problem with the likes of Carrick and Fletcher making foul after foul without rebuke, whereas our players get no such licence.

ManU had a system of repeated fouling, but not in the rough way that Celtic did. No individual tackles were that heavy (bar Fletch’s Kung fu slide!!), but they repeatedly halted our plays thru fouling.

Nishanth made the point about the ref asking Giggs to calm Fletcher down after his disssent. Sagna…one piece of dissent, straight in the book.

    BOLLOX !!!

  57. rob green

gazzap – We are always going to have injuries!! We have a lot of injury prone players. When they get back someone else will be injured!! The man has lost it!!

  58. Geronimo

Almunia has now been at fault for 2 (3 after his fuck up in Hungary) goals this season. I have always felt he lacks the class, charisma and ability to be the number 1 goalkeeper for Arsenal. He is the weakest link so I urge Arsene to buy a top class goalkeeper and experienced DM. Thats it !!!! that’s all we need to make our squad complete but as always it’s nearly but not quite there with Arsenal over the last few years. WE always seem to be those 1-2 signings short of perfection. But what will we get…….a Wenger press conference where he reassures us how “this squad is good enough, they have shown desire, commitment, and character and aswell I believe that the squad has matured…” Well I have all these attributes in abundance so why am I not playing for Arsenal ???

well if the shocking thing does happen and we do sign someone it won’t be unti 4.59 pm maybe if it snows this afternoon it might buy a bit more time fingers crossed for the snow storm hey

  60. Dutchman

How can you do this arsenal! You sold adebayor and toure for about 45m. You give the supporters very high hopes for siging players and now we have no one!
How can arsenal do this? Its absolutely stupid! OK, if the debt is paid off in two years we could spend heavily but I think that wenger is the man who will not spend because of diaby and denilson etc. Wenger has absolutely the money to spend but he is happy with the team! Its all facking wengers fault!

  61. Ben

Wenger is will not buy any body, trust me. the Man believes in our Squad, he thinks they will do better the season. but i really wana see him do buying these season. even if an and experience players like veira, Gattuso and the rest of Others in different League. A prayer like Dvid Beckam will Jump at the Chance to play for Arsenal. But its Impossible, but imagine the possible of BEckam playing for us, That means refrees will fair With us in all Match.

  62. Pedro

Sharkey, I didn’t feel like the fouling was a problem against ManU. We controlled the game and lost because of 3 horrific mistakes and some good goal keeping.

Bleating about fouling just brings more negative press our way and sounds like sour grapes to me.

  63. rob green

IF WE DONT BUY – And then we don’t challenge for the title or win anything this season I am going to be calling for Wengers head!! Honestly!! This was his last chance!!

  64. OneofYou

Even if we buy Chamakh today, (which we wont), I dont think it would make any difference to our chances of winning the league. Chelsea will win the title. we are just fortunate that liverpool and Man u have weakened – at least it means we can compete for second.

Quite close to being true. But I dont see the guys in training every day. Wenger does. His faith is not questionable , only the injury record of our players and the lack to keep a calm mind (which comes from experience) in tricky situations (Rooney’s penalty and the own goal) keeps me from vehemently defending him.

Would I have to defend anyone in that case?

Please Wenger, sing Chamakh and Matuidi, and you will not listen a word against your transfer policies after this.

  65. Sabeel Indian Gunner

Arsenal players are at risk of again “BREAKING” themselves on international duty, resulting in even smaller squad.

  66. Jon

Forget defence – Gallas, Vermaelen, Djourou, Silvestre, Song and Senderos is plenty. If he sells Senderos then yes, buy a replacement but otherwise we have more than enough compared to the other big 4 clubs. We just need to keep Gallas and VErmaelen fit

Central midfield – Fabregas, Diaby, Song, Denilson, Eboue, Nasri, Rosicky, Wilshere, Ramsey. Again, plenty of cover there. Perhaps another defensive miedfielder given that we lost Song in January, otherwise plenty compared to the other big 4 squads

Attack: Arshavin, Van P, Walcott, Eduardo, Bendtner, Vela. You could argue we lack a big target man but we dont need to play that we way with new 4-3-3 formation so again compared to other big 4 squads (particularly L’pool) we have plenty. Although Chamakh may be worth having for that target man if we need to change it up once in a while

BUT PLEASE BUY A GOALKEEPER! Almunia is a good keeper but he will make too many mistakes like on Saturday which will lose us games. I dont know who he could buy but there must be someone out there who could given Almunia the competion he needs and if Almunia gets injured who plays .. Mannone!?!?!?!?!?

  67. rob green

Mark we won’t challenge for the title!! We will do well in the cups but come up short in the big games that matter!!

During the African nations who is going to hold our midfield or we going to have to wait for 6 months for Narsi to learn his trade as a holding midfielder

  68. sir henry norris

Ivan “The Terrible” Gazidis at the CL draw “our phones are red hot” So much bulls-pooh! comes from club.

On that London Standard article. According to remarks attributed to Chamakh his representatives were in London at the weekend, further to that he is reported to of said the “Hammers bid may of come to late” I supposed the author of the article has added 2 + 2 and made 5..

  69. gooner-pak

    Ballack refrence in interesting haha
“Luka is for us as important as Andres Iniesta for Barcelona or Michael Ballack used to be for Bayern Munich. Without him we will be much weaker.”

  70. Pedro

Fucking hell lads… we wont challenge for the title… why not?

How can everyone be so sure and ageing Chav team can sustain a challenge… and that the African nations cup wont obliterate their hopes in Feb?

Liverpool look weak this year as do ManU… I’m sure the City challenge will derail at some point as well.

  71. red25

don’t know it it’s true – but some agent on talksport was saying that because the transfer deadline for the rest of europe has passed – it’s too late for us to sign form abroad. our deadline is extended by a day cos of the bank holiday.

kinda pours cold water on all the speculation, doesn’t it?

re fishface – if arseney was open to letting him go he wuda used him to sweeten the chamakh deal, cos bordeaux wanted him.

re chamakh – he will win over all the doubters

my transfer tip (assuming the agent on talksport was talking crap (like most of the people on talksport)) – m. diarra from real…

I dont get what Darren Fletcher did for the press to keep singing his praises for so long. That fucker got away with the most blatant penalty and a card, and England’s hero got away witha fucking dive.

Someone needs to learn to overhype from the English press.

Wenger needs to understand that you can never make a GK, you are either a great GK or your not. Since he has been at Arsenal he has never made a GK, but has made a player for every other position. This is one area where he needs to spend big and get proven talent.

    Morning All,

BBK – Of course we will challenge for the title!! How after one dubious loss can you be so defeatist?

Pedro – So do you think we have a good enough squad to challenge for the title and win a trophy this season? I cant see it!! Its going to be the same story as last season!! If we dont buy anyone that is!!
