Barca windfall is good news for shifting on Arsenal deadwood

Wenger showing Sanchez the Neymar transfer news

Wenger showing Sanchez the Neymar transfer news

Football just lost its damn mind. PSG seems to be the destination for the featherweight Brazilian Neymar. 222m euros sees the most ambitious signing of all time fire into action. I’m literally speechless about this move. The ramifications are going to reverberate around Europe. Barcelona desperately need to save face, so I expect a spending spree of epic proportions as the transfer dominoes begin to fall at a rapid pace.

Maybe they’ll sign Ozil? I’d lose him in a heartbeat. Great player, lots of key passes, but a waster at Arsenal, especially in a year he’ll be running down the clock. Ozil losing any more fucks is going to be so damaging. I’d love us to have a replacement lined up, but that’d be asking too much. Still, I think we could spend that sort of money on someone who could do more for our system.

It’s also pleasing that finally, a club in Europe has the financial clout to relieve us of some of the deadwood clogging up our arteries.

Take your pick Valverde:

  • Jack Wilshere
  • Lucas Perez
  • David Ospina
  • Mathieu Debuchy
  • Kieran Gibbs
  • Calum Chambers
  • Carl Jenkinson

Great news in all this is now PSG have landed their man, it’s closed the door on a move for Alexis. I mean, unless Wenger does the unthinkable and flogs him to a Manchester City that look pretty damn mean going into the new season. So to my mind, he’s probably staying now. Unless Barca come back in for him, but damn Alexis, you’ve already done Barcelona. Plus, I have a feeling they’ll be signing the wonderful Dembele of Dortmund, what a star that kid is – he’s also just had an elite training ground bustup – the signature move of a player who wants to move in 2017. Also rumours they want Dybala, who is a superstar in the making as well.

Finally, one of my biggest wonders of Arsene Wenger never ending era is this… I’ve never had to moan that we mess around with it too much at the back. One of the most adventurous managers in the game has never cared too much about having a keeper who can play with the ball at his feet, nor has he ever really had supremely technical centre backs who can pass between themselves. Take a look at this outrageous play from the back from Napoli.

I mean, Chezzer used to try the odd Cruyff turn, but this sort of play, though extreme in its nature, really would allow us to play to our strengths moving forward. You wouldn’t have Xhaka under such extreme pressure, it’d work for our new formation, and it’d just look really cool.

Sarri is certainly a coach I hope the club are looking at when Wenger retires in 16 years time.

Right, that’s me done for today. Have a good one.

Its’s nice to put a “face” on the idiots that still chant the “only one Arsene Wenger” song
Finally we are getting to know the Wenger worshippers. You’re the easily fleeced groupies. The other half of the fan base have become more discerning.

    Oh Theo Theo

I doubt that La Liga have much clout in this matter if Barcelona are prepared to sell as it would seem to be the case and PSG are prepared to pay the fee up front in full.

The only issue is whether FIFA undertake a financial assessment about PSG’s
    ability to comply with FFP.

The real issue for me is how the club use best its resources and not as too many
posters argue the calibre of the players.

Football is a team game and as both Leicester and Spurs have proven in last two seasons it is not always about who can spend the most in transfer window.

As I pointed out yesterday Man City have spent £120 million on full backs. Does anyone believe that Arsenal’s players in those positions are weaker?
Bellerin and Kolasinac cost nothing and Ox-Chamberlain and Monreal cost
    combined about £20 million.

City finshed 4 points above arsenal after spending £160m in the last two years
    Excluding the £200m this year
They finished 4th the season before last and have added 3 poxy full backs to the equation!!!
    Go city!!

  9. WestLondonGoon

If we actually did something as simple as stepping our backline up 15 yards it would compress the field of play and make our glaring weaknesses in midfield a little less of a problem. Of course this would require a degree of positional discipline and negate the ‘go out and play your football’ culture that Wenger has implimented.

Fucking hilarious reading commentary from absolute twats aboit how certain posters are “why we’re where we are”. Made all the more funny knowing theyve actually been present at about 3 matches between them their entire lives.

Do tell me how being a season ticket holder, cheering for the players on the pitch, and respecting the legacy of the manager currently in charge has had any impact on where arsenal fc is today?

Since the Doctor considers me to be a moron because I suggest that Arsenal’s
full back resources are at least as good as those of Man City let me pose another question.

Can anyone name a club who have on their books currently two forwards who
scored 30+ goals last season and a further two players who have scored 20+ goals in past 2 years

Oh yes the club in question is Arsenal. Sanchez and Lacazette scored 30+ and
Giroud and Walcott 20+ in last 2 years.

The real point is not who has the best individual players, but how you are using your resources best.

    “BREAKING NEWS
Arsene Wenger has been speaking to the press ahead of Arsenal’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea on Sunday and he’s given an update on Alexis Sanchez’s future at the club.
He said: “My decision is clear. He will stay and he will respect that.”

End of. Let’s move on now to other topics.

  27. ThePuma9

    Don

‘I actually think this system is set up to counter’

It is don you’re right. Cos we had pace at the back (until Chelsea) we could have pressed up to the half and condensed and i was pulling my hair why we didn’t.

But you’d have noticed we sat back in first halves and then after half time we gradually upped the tempo and pushed further up.

Even before we switched to the 3 at back it was pissing me off why we didn’t push up higher cos we had pace all across the back 4 since per was out of the line up. We’re much better on the front foot and wanted us to dominate teams but getting countered so easily so often something had to change.

Saying that the 3-4-3 makes us so dangerous on the counter cos we got pace wide and with the 3 up top we just need to be Chelsea ruthless cos we’re still far too wasteful in front of goal. The final been another example.

  28. ThePuma9

  29. Cesc Appeal

    Raptora

Less clear is his comment ‘I think he will be here this season’.

Wenger is clear about his decision that he wants him to stay, but says he ‘thinks’ Sanchez will be here this season.

This is not going away and most journalists seem to agree Sanchez wants out this summer. Still some miles on this one yet for another four weeks.

If he is kicking you cannot blame him really, 29 in December and given his style of play he needs to move as soon as possible really to maximise his chances of success.

  30. Leftsidesanch

To be fair not sure that means alot, Cesc personally came over to us to do the same thing after a session only to sign for Barca a few weeks later.

  31. champagne charlie

    don/puma

the new system works great for counter attacking football but for me it also lends itself perfectly to our possession based stuff given our wingbacks are essentially midfielders.

i always advocated with the old system that our CB pair should split, and arteta/xhaka should drop in and start from deep. Moving to a three basically makes that transition given wenger commentes recently how the back 3 needs the outside CB’s to be pacey, while the central CB should be great in terms of distribution. A reason he tinkered with elneny there i feel.

i like the new system and how it suits, hoping to see the players more familiar with their roles and implementing a more stable base to play our game from. Personnel wise i think we have a top defence, the art is definitely in finding the right system and approach off the ball to protect efficiently. The best defender in the world will get ruined in a system that isolates him or leaves him more than one area to manage.

  32. Cesc Appeal

The thing is as well, if there is to be a sale everyone wants to come out of it looking good.

Sanchez does not want to look like an uncaring mercenary. So he can say he cares about Arsenal greatly but has to move on for personal career reasons.

Wenger does not want to look like a pathetic has been whose best player is walking away and who he has sold to a domestic rival (in name only of course). So he can say I did not want to sell him but was forced to.

I still think we will end up selling Sanchez, the noise around us still going hard for Lemar and those rumours about Dembele (though not sure what validity I give them) make me think that even more.

This situation is not ideal at all, Sanchez would basically be on loan to us in a sense and as Raptora pointed out he is far and away are best player. The mood among fans watching him grab match winners, being our top scorer, MotM over and over etc and knowing he could be City’s in January. I am not sure how that would go. But we have left ourselves in a stupid, shitty situation.

  33. Emiratesstroller

Wenger’s statement published by Sky is “my decision is clear. He will stay and
    will respect that”

There was no qualification whatsoever in statement.

In contrast to other players such as Van Dijk and Sigurdsson I don’t see any
indication that Sanchez is rebelling, uncooperative or refusing to train properly or play for Arsenal.

He appears to be behaving as a professional footballer earning a lot of money
    should do.

  34. Cesc Appeal

“He is focused. My decision is clear, he will stay. He will accept that.

“The frame of mind of a footballer is quite easy – once you go out into the game, you focus on that.

“(He is) good, you can see it in training. He needs to work on his fitness but he is sharp and looks like he has never been away.

“I think he will be here for this season. If we manage to do it for more seasons we will.”

    There you go.

From strong starting point, to qualified at the end.

  35. Cesc Appeal

    Actually says nothing.

I want him to stay, he will accept it, I think he will be here.

Means he has not accepted it, though Wenger wants him to stay, and that he still might leave.

    As you were basically.

  36. HighburyLegend

“It’s also pleasing that finally, a club in Europe has the financial clout to relieve us of some of the deadwood clogging up our arteries.”

Pedro please tell me that it’s irony.
You can’t seriously think that barcelona could be interested by Wilshere, Perez, Ospina or Debauchery ????

  37. jwl

Today’s Guardian – “Paris St-Germain’s push to conclude the signing of Neymar hit an obstacle on Thursday when La Liga refused an attempt to hand over the money to buy out the forward’s contract at Barcelona.

The lawyers Juan de Dios Crespo and Marcos Motta went to the league’s headquarters to deposit €222m (£198m) and clear the way for Neymar to join the French club.”

  38. Relieable Sauce

So wenger wants to keep a bad apple for his final year and lose £50m in the process???

Ideal wouldn’t be the word I’d use.
Unless we’re talking scape goats for when the shit inevitably hits the fan during Arsene-al FC’s season – which shouldn’t be too far down the line.

  39. Don

    Puma Cc

I agree that the new formation could work well in both situations it’s just that the personnel has to be in place for both.
You have mertesacker in that defence and we push up too far then I can see problems
Especially with xakha lumbering back and Ramsey on the floor in the opposition area after scuffing another sitter.
It has to be altered depending on the opposition

  40. Emiratesstroller

    Highbury Legend

Every player on the planet can fuck up a season, but somehow I don’t think that Sanchez is the type who thinks like that.

For me the decision to keep Sanchez is a necessity, but it does not alter the fact
that Arsenal have mismanaged contract negotiations over several years. They
pay too much for squad players and too little to their best players.

Also running down contracts to final year so that the club has very limited options is not clever.

  41. jwl

Does Napoli. manager encourage his players to continually pass the ball back to the keeper?

I would be having conniptions if I was manager and my defenders were doing that. Having your defence constantly taking shots at your own goal is risky, ball hit’s divet or keeper can’t stop watching a pretty blonde with big tits in crowd, and you get own goals on purpose.

  42. Emiratesstroller

    CA

The point is that Sanchez is a tough nut mentally.

He will play for Arsenal to the best of ability if he stays even if he prefers to go
    elsewhere.

The club has nailed its flag to mask of “remain” and that is what I believe will
    happen.

Manchester City have made absolutely no bid for the player. If there was huge
ambition to do so I think that an offer would be made by now. They were not
shy when it came to offering and buying other players.

“Moving to a three basically makes that transition given wenger comments recently how the back 3 needs the outside CB’s to be pacey, while the central CB should be great in terms of distribution. A reason he tinkered with elneny there i feel.”

yeah, expect to see one of the centre mid’s dropping in there occasionally throughout the season.

  44. Ishola70

The Bosnian signed from Schalke was a hit there at LWB because he was direct in his play. Not much possession football from him. Nothing fancy about him at Schalke. Basically straight down the line.

Ox is better being direct from RWB. That is why he should be picked ahead of Bellerin in that position because he has the better potential straight down the line on the right. No fancy stuff.

Generally wingbacks are better served to be direct straight down those straight lines.

  45. Emiratesstroller

    CA

One final point. I have seen Sanchez throw a strop, get angry and frustrated, but
I have never seen him stop playing to the best of his ability.

As I said he is a mentally tough player in contrast to some of the other players
    at Arsenal.

  46. Don

    Reliable sauce

Where else are we going to come up with a player as good as Sanchez that has the numbers Sanchez has for this season?
    We aren’t.
Even if we do sign lemar or some like him, it would be just to prime him ready to take over from Sanchez.

  47. Leftsidesanch

    Wenger in regards to Perez:

“We have a congestion of strikers,” Wenger said. “I don’t like to lose him because he’s a top-quality striker, but we have many and at some stage too much competition is no competition.

“If he finds a satisfactory solution, at least for the short-term, we will do it.”

= a Loan move that doesn’t benefit the club. Arsene living up to the billing of being a hoarder.

  48. N5

I know Wenger has brought it on himself from previous behaviours, but if he sells Sanchez he’ll be torn apart for it. If he keeps him and lets him go next season, he’ll be torn apart for it. He’s damned if he does or doesn’t.

People were moaning how this was an RVP situation and then when it isn’t, moaning that he’s not cashing in!

Make your mind up with what’s more important and stick with it.

  49. raptora

    CA,
Wenger says he “thinks” that Alexis will be here this season re if he will stay more than one season, and he follows on “If we manage to do it for more seasons we will.” Anyways I don’t see how many times and much more clear can Wenger make this matter.

  50. ThePuma9

    Cc/don

You’d hope that there is evolution within this new system as well. By that I mean players feeling more comfortable with their roles both sides of the ball and making this 343 unique to Arsenal. A few teams are playing it but they all play it differently due to the personnel in it. Think it can work really well for us with the front 3 given so much freedom, I just hope we stretch play a bit more with the pace we have and utilise the space in behind.

The best systems mask the weaknesses of players but more importantly accentuating the strengths. With the personnel available we needed to have a formation that made us more defensive, even if it was just in numbers and not a change of philosophy.

With the 3 CBs like you said it’s more security when a move breaks down and you aren’t left with a 3 against 1 counter when the fullbacks are miles from home.

Felt sorry for some of our CBs over the years, they have to be good 1v1. That’d never happen in a Maureen team or the current Chelsea side.

The balance seems much better just hope the mentality, attitude and belief is right from the off.

  51. champagne charlie

    don

i agree, but what i will say is a back three suits mertesacker infinitely more than a four.

when hes left for dead he has two covering defenders that are pacey whereas a back four sees him expose whoever as last man which is either a great goal chance or a sending off waiting to happen.

A 3 just suits arsenal, ive been on that train for ages. We played with full backs as wingers which leaves a back two against two attackers time after time which is playing with fire.

A 4 means a Kante type is essential to the side for balance, two CBs sit and he roams in front to form a triangle. We didnt have him sat there so we had 2 defenders waiting to get pulled apart. At least now that’s three and our midfield/wing backs are better in terms of ball retention. Add lemar to that centre and this improves tenfold over Ramsey (who i rate).

If we sign lemar id bet my bottom dollar he’ll function alongside Xhaka in much the same way Kondogbia/dembele operates. His type of attributes are crucial to knitting is together in there, nimble, quick, can carry the ball in sudden bursts to turn midfields around. He’s a superb talent and i think he’d excel for us in there alongside a more adapted Xhaka.

  52. Leedsgunner

“Arsenal were unable to find the £40m it would have cost to acquire Neymar from Santos and were left with Gervinho instead.”

Remember that next time someone pipes up about how great Wenger is at spotting talent.

  53. Ishola70

    Leedsgunner:
“Arsenal were unable to find the £40m it would have cost to acquire Neymar from Santos and were left with Gervinho instead.”

    lol that is not true.

The truth is Neymar even at that time would not have been interested in joining Arsenal as the real big players already had tabs on him.

For Neymar at that time just read MBappe 2017.

Did you know that the Brazilian kid Jesus now at Man City had inserted in his release clause while at Palmeiras a list of clubs of his choosing that could activate the release? Arsenal were not on his list of clubs. Just another example.

  54. Oh Theo Theo!

No N5 – the issue of why he is dammed if he does and dammed if he doesn’t is only because they didn’t sort out the contract situation…. Which other club ends up with their best player being allowed to run his contract down (along with most of our players!!)

Yeah mertesacker and most defenders for that matter would look more comfortable in a back 3.
    It gives far greater security.

I’ve been a massive fan since hoddle employed it for England starting from 97 through to France 98
Haven’t seen an England side look that comfortable since.

Arsenal need to get back into Champs League and they won’t manage it without Sanchez. Wenger is walking on thin ice now, he has to do everything he can to get back into top four and keep fans mollified. Wenger needs to keep Sanchez or else next season going to be even more miserable than last one.

If in September Sanchez is still here, fair enough he stuck to his guns. Although his actions next summer will be very harshly judged having lost a big money player for nothing. Me thinks he is buying twelve months keeping his fingers crossed on some great scout, contract situation we can benefit from or a youngster taking a step up.

  63. Don

    CA

Also keeping his fingers crossed that we can make some waves in the league this year too
Even if we just make it into the champions league again he will think it’s justified

  64. champagne charlie

“The story was relevant for what was trending today on Grove Charlie , but looks like my auto correct was somehow compromised
But good things getting back on track hick”

You got an english version of this mate?

  65. Cesc Appeal

    Don

    Yeah that is likely.

Although right now, looking at the league and us, if we go in as it stands that is going to be a struggle and a half. I just do not like the centre of our team. I know you agree.

To do well we need our defence to be solid, for Sanchez to be Sanchez of last year and for Lacazette to at least have a decent season with Giroud doing his back up routine well. Even then, I do not think that is enough for the title picture but perhaps enough to come fourth.

  66. S.Asoa

    The champagne Charlie, the champagne
Guess it makes the man’s judgement go AWOL
So understand mate. I understand. Sad to be with a judgement affected by all the champagne.

  67. N5

OTT, I think that’s a given that the contract should have been sorted ages ago, which is why I said due to Wengers past behaviours. But the situation is what it is now. And flip flopping over what makes people angry is stilly. Either your mad at him going, or mad if he stays but when you’re just sitting on a fence waiting to see what happens so that you can then moan, then maybe your hate of Wenger is more important to you than Alexis is?

And by you I mean everyone.

  68. Carts

    Cesc

You mean to tell me you paid for a film that had “…City of a thousand planets” in the title.

Serve you right, you filthy whore.

  69. EN1AFC

“And yet you’d be celebrating winning the FA cup a few months later? You lot are the embarrassment make up your fucking mind. One day protesting against the club the next singing when we’re winning.Spoilt entitled cunt. Amd your another reason other supporters laugh at us.”

    Puma

Your making a right cunt of yourself now. So anyone who doesn’t support the manager and current ownshership of the club can’t support the team. Fuck me your a bit simple aren’t you?

You happy with the way the clubs being run and the direction we are going in under Kroenke and Wenger I take it??

  70. Carts

    LOL @ Wenger flexing.

Miserable git still on his commander-in-chief shit.

Listen, Sanchez isn’t signing shit. He probably doesn’t want anyone to sign his goodbye card, ffs.

My money is on Sanchez walking at the 11th hours to City.

  71. Don

    En1afc

    Give it a rest

You’re the one making a mug of yourself
Criticising someone for having a pissimg contest over who Ira to the most games then having one yourself?!?

How can anyone take you with an ounce of sincerity after that?

  72. Cesc Appeal

    Carts

I know, I got dragged to it to be honest and goodness me, I have never started checking how long is left to go ten minutes into a film.

I like Dane DeHaan, but goodness me this must be one of the worst cases of miscasting in film history.

  73. Carts

    Cesc

    Shit, son.

Saw the trailer and it was a whole heap of nopes from me.

Might check out a bit of Dunkirk tonight. Heard it aight.

Piece in the Guardian spoke about the lack of ethnic faces. Hollywood gonna Hollywood, though.

    Amirigt.

  74. Cesc Appeal

    Carts

Lack of ethnic faces in Dunkirk?

But, it is a historical film based on actual events. I mean sure if they can pull some numbers that show ethnic people were present in big numbers and are being under represented fine, otherwise sit down.

    Don

I am not really that adventurous in terms of films. I always hear Japanese cinema is meant to have some classics.

  75. EN1AFC

    Don

I Wasn’t addressing you but seeing as your calling me out now.. if you think I’ve made a mug out of myself then it’s a bit rich coming from you and the bollocks you spout on here.

  76. HighburyLegend

Wengermaster just gave is thoughts about the Neymar transfer…
So much more interesting than to care of his own club.

  77. Don

    Cesc Appeal

It’s all about the Korean mate.

Not a fan of just throwing ethnic faces in just to tick boxes
The criticism was made of game of thrones, ridiculously

  78. Cesc Appeal

    Joe

I have not seen the film so I cannot comment on how it is shot, whether it focuses on one group of soldiers in a troop in terms of on the beach. So I have no idea.

I think people pretty much know though how central many nations you would say were part of the Commonwealth or British Empire were to WWII.

Again, cannot really comment because I have not seen it, but maybe some sort of prologue or something could have mentioned them.

Have a feeling though you could dig out most historical films for not being accurate in this area.

  79. Joe

    Cesc

I’m not criticizing the film. Haven’t seen it. And I’m not a ww 2. I just remember coming across an article about it the other day, so I found it and posted it here after your post

I have no opinion on it

  80. Carts

GoT Is pure Fiction. Zero fucks given about that.

Stumbled across a Guardian piece and the author made mention of the lack of ethnic faces.

I haven’t seen it nor did I have great knowledge of Dunkirk.

    Will watch, though.

‘Your making a right cunt of yourself now. So anyone who doesn’t support the manager and current ownshership of the club can’t support the team. Fuck me your a bit simple aren’t you?’

The only cunt crying his eyes out is you. Touch a nerve about the massive failure of the protests did I?

Again you muggy fucks are just a massive contradiction and again embarrassing to be associated with.

You don’t have to support the regime to support the team no one has said that you illiterate.

Many people wanted a change and don’t agree with Kronke but didn’t feel the need to join numerous protests and embarrass the club and other supporters with the noise they made.

Then you decide to go to the cup final and support the club.

What’s that about? If you’re so against the shit regime and the shit manager and the shit players why the fuck turn up at the fa cup final? Hoping deep down we lost so your bullshit protests would have some meaning.

Why didn’t you do what the Blackpool fans did and boycott the final if you felt so strongly? At least those dickheads actually made a point and had some conviction unlike the section of all talk and no action Arsenal fans.

Confusion reigns supreme with you boys.

Seeing as you failed with your shitty protests and admit defeat are you going to support the team these next two years?

Don’t know why I’m asking I already know the answer.

Sing when we win though eh?

  82. Don

    The guardian though…..
    What else do you expect?

Just shoeing as many brown faces as possible into whatever they can now to appease the diversity zealots

Mary Jane and flash in Spider-Man
The Gunslinger in the dark tower
I love Idris and think he will do the role justice but it has to work both ways
If someone makes a movie that focuses on a story containing mostly white allied soldiers and is historically accurate then what’s all the complaints about?

  83. Don

    Puma

    Stop it!!!
    He’s had enough!!!
You’ll give yourself a sore hand from that spanking you’re giving him

    Sooooo true
If you want Wenger out that badly then stick to your guns

  84. EN1AFC

    Puma

More like I hit a nerve you mean, all that bollocks you’ve just spouted.

How fucking hard is it for you to understand that I or ANYONE else for that matter can support the team and not be behind the manager or owner? You simple cunt how old are you? 11? I want the team to win every single game they play, I want the best for Arsenal Football Club. The best for Arsenal Football Club is Wenger and Kroenke gone. Do you agree or not? You think Arsene Wenger signing for another 2 years was in the best interests of Arsenal Football Club?

  85. Dissenter

    Relieable,
“Wenger mostly deals with soccer mom agents these days.”

    lol.
He taps up the mothers and then the families.

  86. Leedsgunner

    Ishola

Worse than not being mocked by your rivals is to be completely ignored by them.

As far as title aspirations are concerned, we are not a threat anymore — at least with Wenger in charge.

Is there a greater insult to a proud club like ours?

  87. Bamford10

    Puma

There is only one reason opposing fans laugh at Arsenal fans: Arsene Wenger. “We want you to stay,” they sing — because they know he’s a fucking joke.
