Mata to United > Rooney to Chelsea? | No signings… why does nobody care?

Bloody hell, this transfer window is like pulling teeth. Pulling teeth whilst voluntarily sedated.

No one really cares about buying players because we’re winning. Which is fine, but I think the reality bug might bite in at some point and we’ll be cursing the lack of movement because I really don’t think we have the depth to fight all the way this year.

However, what do I know? The boss will have all the data at his hands and if he deems the squad deep enough, well, all I can do is wait and see.

Amazing what success does to the mind of the average fan. This year has been so much less stressful. When Arsenal are on form, life is on form. Winning at football puts everything in perspective. Fired from your job? Who cares, season ticket renewals aren’t for 5 months. Girlfriend dumps you? Who cares, her brother supported Spurs anyway. Crunch your ankle in a Covent Garden pothole so badly you think you might have to miss pilates today? It doesn’t matter, you don’t need your ankle to watch Arsenal and pilates is for girls.

Life always has a silver lining when we’re winning.

The worry is that Manchester City haven’t needed to spend big, but Chelsea have added some additional legs to their midfield. Mourinho thinks that his massive squad needs adding to, but Arsene thinks we can push on with our squad… which we’ve already seen shake when the games come thick and fast.

We’ll see though. We’re dispatching teams with relative ease at the moment, but we are heading into a very business period. However, we’ll have a reinvigorated Nik B to share the work load with Giroud… and look… if he can play like he did against Cardiff for the rest of the season, I’ll take that. We also have Ramsey back in the frame and hopefully we’ll see some progress from Chamberlain, and some settling for Ozil who I’m waiting to see explode.

Outside the limited Arsenal news, we have Manchester United and Chelsea doing a deal for Juan Mata. I think the move is mental. I’d still prefer Ozil, but I think it’s crazy Chelsea wouldn’t let Arsenal loan Demba Ba… but they’re quite happy to let United, last seasons title winners take on Mata. It’s a great signing for United if it happens. Chelsea taking FFP seriously? Or are they lining up Rooney?

Right, that’s me done for the day. Catch you in the comments!

    NM,

I would have taken the third choice of keeping for the final year. At the very least he wouldn’t have helped Man U to yet another title.

  2. Invincibles

    @Nasri’s Mouth

Answer me this then, if we had the choice between selling RvP to ManU and selling him overseas to another club, where would RvP be now?

At this time of night I’d say he’d be in bed.

  3. Nasri's Mouth

Jeff: I would have taken the third choice of keeping for the final year.

Well if that’s your choice, we’ll just have to disagree about Mata’s transfer being the same as RvP’s then.

  4. Jeff

    Kwik,

I just had a quick look as well. I myself don’t like them in those particular proportions but each to the devil his own way.

Wenger will say this is our transfer window business.

Laughable really because in reality they could have signed at anytime. Don’t misunderstand me I think it’s great if Per, Sagna and Rosicky sign — but this is not really strengthening the squad with fresh legs is it? Apparently he’ll by if someone exceptional “turns up”. So much for doing the hard work yourself hey Arsene?

I’m glad Arsene has the Transfer Fairy working hard on his behalf…

  6. Dialtriangle

    Invincibles

That is a homophobic statement. How dare you say such a thing on Le-grove. I bet you dislike mongs and Simon Weston as well. Shame on you! He’s a fucking hero.

  7. Sam

    what happened to Pato?

Hmmm not really a good Idea at the moment as we are going in the second half of the season with only Gnabry and Giroud who are ok. the rest of our attackers are all crocks.
This is what I am worried most and Its wrong for Wenger to count on Sanogo this season. Podolski had a long hamstring, I don’t think he can play 2 games in a row, Chambo had knee but still needs more practice to get back.
For this, Signing one or 2 makes sense.

Norfolk, he wouldn’t sign a contract abroad mate, we would have lost him for nothing.”

Maybe we might have won the EPL in his last season and he’d then want to re-sign.

  9. Jeff

    Kwik,

Yeah I first read about the drunk 999 call on BBC this afternoon. The funny thing is that he doesn’t sound that drunk? Which means we’re probably in the Forest Gump area when he’s not.

  10. Dialtriangle

    Jeff

What I mean is, he may be able to confuse and bore me into thinking it’s a nice car or that his policy is best, but I just don’t think I’d be able to vote for him or want him to earn any commission off me. It’s not necessarily an insult. Hitler for all his faults was probably a very likeable guy.

  11. Sam

I don’t believe that false assessment that this squad is not good enough.
We are top of the league FFs.

Is this squad good enough to win the league? YES

is this squad fit enough to win the league? NO

    stop the difference

  12. Invincibles

    @Dial

Yes and its a joke. My brothers bi and have gay friends. That phrase mongs is highly offensive and I’d like you to refrain from repeating it again please as I have a down syndrome cousin who I love dearly. Simon Weston is a hero as are the thousands injured serving our country.

  13. Dialtriangle

    Sam

Even if the difference is spotted, that doesn’t help the club’s title chances in any way.

Let’s say you’re right. The squad aren’t fit and cannot win the title. Wenger still might end up doing nothing this TW and we’ll go trophy-less yet another season.

Having a squad deep enough to overcome injuries (which happen to every club every year) is also a factor in being good.

  14. samsensible

Dale Rios:Is Draxler really that good though?

He’s already very good, could be absolutely amazing, might (but might not) end up being a great front man

  16. Jeff

Jokes aside though, what is the one thing that makes Draxler more likely than all the other false gossip links? Is there any real truth in it?

  17. N5

OK samsensible I see you have gone red and black, please tell me how.

dialtraingle you were quite funny now you’re just a dick head. You saw the shite that insult you made got on here the other day and you’ve repeated it to get a rise. Well good one you melt, you got it, now you can fuck off into the night.

  18. Salvage

    samsensible January 23, 2014 17:45:22

Salvage are you seriously suggesting we should ha e beaten city to Aguero?
    ——————————————————————————–
No , just pointing out the business other top clubs engage in while we keep asking that question that Wenger has put in people’s heads : “Who is there to buy”?
Aguero is not the only one I mentioned, by the way.

  19. Jeff

    NM,

Now please. I am desperate to face the big boys in February and March with something more than what we already have. So if it is to be Draxler, let’s have him now if possible.

  20. Dialtriangle

In a bit of levity though, it honestly wasn’t to get a rise. Well maybe it was. But it was more to point out that you can’t complain how offended you are cause you’re in love with your cousin who has Down’s, all while laughing away about gay transfer fairies. Hypocritical shit.

  21. Nasri's Mouth

    @Jeff

Well SKYbet have it as 4/7 and PaddyPower have it as evens for him to sign for us this month, but I’m not going to put any money on it.

  22. samsensible

N5, mate it’s tempting to keep you hanging…

It’s entirely decided by whether you have anything written in the website cell when you post.

Now, relax and try and win your wife back!

  23. samsensible

    Dialtriangle is definitely not Dial.

Salvage, comparing us to City in transfer window power is…wishful thinking. Nuff said.

The fact that city can buy strikers proves nothing. Sorry. Dzeko was 30m. He’s their 3rd choice. Jovetic was 25m and is still to play more than a handful of minutes. That’s what City can do. They are in a different world where their are no consequences to their spending should the striker not deliver sufficiently…like Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Jo and Balotelli…a combined…what, 95m?

  24. Revving Kevin

We are going so far back kipper ties and flairs will be back in fashion. :-)
What is the point in arguing the same stuff? Now it’s RVP and ‘why did we sell him?’ How many groundhog dats can you have? Look RVP was a complete wanker who fucked us over and lied about his £48m reasons.

Also the question about who would you sign is relevant. You can’t start jumping up and down saying we can sign anyone and then fail to claim who you want. That’s wrong. If you are demanding g a signing, tell us who. And no fucking names off FIFA please Becos that does my head in. Some clown came up with a name the other day and when I googled, he was about 4′ 6′ with a club foot and a glass fucking eye. It’s a signing. It’s a signing. It’s crazy madness sometimes.

Red and black is to do with sexual preference. Those who fancy same sex people are black. What colours that prejudiced bloke with the man gob?

  25. N5

Lol Revving hits the evening shift on Le Grove with a bang!

RvP was being comparted to Mata Kev and we were saying it was different as one was a mercenary cunt and the other was out of favour.

Then the signing thing, jesus. people are saying sing anyone, I said if we signed evonaoasdoasdjasd a 24 year old African player everyone would go nuts about no ambition, don’t buy anyone, everyone goes nuts, no ambition, buy Cavani, he isn’t good enough as we won’t buy another 8, no ambition.

And round and round we go and to top it off Dialtriange is a complete idiot.

  26. GoonerDave

Why did Chelsea sign Salah and sell Mata?
Doesn’t make much sense to me, unless as AW says, it was financial reasons? Mata any day of the week for me. Even out wide.
Salah is promising but Mata is the real mcCoy. The Scousers wont ve happy with that, they thought he was nailed on to head to Anfield and was in their price range.

  27. GoonerDave

    He bloody must have N5!
Something very odd about Jose’s misuse of Mata.
So Chelsea sign 2 players, one a good prospect, the other a very good player. United get an excellent midfielder and the boss was on TV today saying he wasn’t close to anyone…
We have to hope he was lying there! To be in first place now, none of us thought it, we really should try to at least get one player in.
City and Chelsea have 20 quality players to our 15.

  28. Bamford13

    To Wenger apologists:

If Wenger signs no one in this window and we fail to win the league, will you criticize him for not signing someone better than Giroud this summer or now?

    Or will you instead say:
    – no one better was available
    – we didn’t have the resources
    – we didn’t finish 2nd or 3rd because of Giroud

    Just curious.

  29. Revving Kevin

    Dear N5
Man Utd lost and LG gets all the old haters back, it ain’t rocket science. Do not assume people on here are all Gooners they ain’t.

Some of the moaners problem is they hate too much and this makes them irrational. This is why they have no ability to reason and won’t listen . Everything’s Wengers fault and it’s every day the same shit. They get whipped up by Man Gob . You will notice what he does, if he sees sensible debate he will change the tone and create an aggressive atmosphere. He is playing a game believe me.

If you disagree with these extremists, you are made to be the enemy and that childish AKB comes out. We all know AKB doesn’t exist but these people are idiots. The sensible ones disagree and explain their view properly. If someone says AKB I switch off and know they are a class A moron. You get called AKB which makes me laugh and Nasri’s Mouth too. But I am deliberately more pro Wenger just to wind them up Becos they are so anti. And the same people hate Wenger hate on Giroud too. Some fans eh?

  30. GoonerDave

    Nasri-
    Cheers for the link.
I understand Mata’s position is different to Salah, but I suppose I’m just really surprised they sold Mata at all. Positions aside, he will take Mata’s place up in their already talented squad.

  31. N5

100% agree Kevin, I don’t think I’ve ever made a pro or anti Wenger comment as I’m an Arsenal fan fullstop yet AKB comes out so often its embarrassing.

@Bamford, will you be happy if we sign an unknown from France, with the chances that he may be better than Giroud?

  32. GoonerDave

    Bamford-
I support Wenger at Arsenal, and if he failed to sign a player I’d be critical of that yes. Not because we didn’t get a Suarez, but because we are competing at the very highest level with an obvious deficiency in depth up there.
Nothing wrong with criticism, any AW supporter would criticise certain things he has done.

I’ve not seen anyone mention AKB so often in a post for a while :-)
I have met a few AKB’s tbh although they don’t call themselves that so I’d say they do exist.
I would out AW in a flash but don’t hate on Giroud, am I weird (don’t answer that).
I think AW must take the glory when we win something and therefore must take some stick when we don’t win anything. Tbh I don’t mind loosing so much if I think the team sweated blood trying to win. It’s why I loved Tony Adams et al.

  34. Nasri's Mouth

    @Bamford13

Not that I’m a Wenger apologist, but if we don’t sign someone this January (in fact even if we do sign someone as ‘cover’) and we lose, then the fault clearly lies in our inability to sign a top striker in the summer.

Even if we win the league, the fact is we still messed up our striker signing strategy pretty badly in the summer

  35. Leedsgunner

    Invincibles @2142

Oi! Behave yourself…. I didn’t mean it like that at all and I think you know that. Hitzberger’s retired, and I personally happy for him to let him be. A bit of a cheap gag….

Are you suggesting that there are/were no known strikers who are better than Giroud and available?

If so, then you should’ve just said, “no one better is/was available”.

Except that that’s a ludicrous claim.

  37. Revving Kevin

    Hi Norfolk
They don’t exist believe me. All that happens is people get fed up of Gooners slagging off Wenger Becos the same people are usually the ones who slag off the players. I am deliberately very pro Wenger for those reasons. I see myself as an antidote to their poison, if that makes sense.

I have been pissed by a lot of things Wenger has done. But in 55 years I have never acted he the way some do. It gets so bad sometimes you get really vile stuff said. It’s only football, most of us are Gooners so let’s all get along and debate without the name calling. Its cool to be anti or pro Wenger, it’s about an opinion. But don’t stick a label on me and use it to discredit what I say. That drives me mad.

Ps: mrs likes the idea of Chicago so you never know!

  38. Bamford13

Nice to see that some level-headed folk will criticize Wenger for not signing someone better than Giroud. He’ll deserve it.

I try never to label people.
If I did call you an AKB (I don’t think I’ve ever called anyone an AKB on here) it isn’t to discredit you, it’s just a convenient pigeonhole/label to explain someone who is supportive of AW whatever he does. Personally I think it’s a dumb stance as there isn’t a manager alive who never screws up at least nobody that I can think of.

  41. the_real_andy

considering our recent form as well as our current position in the league it´s hard to say our team isn´t good enough right now really. we don´t drop silly points, we´ve lost some games but so did others and even if we buy players for 300 million it won´t avoid losing some games during a season.

I think many of us seem to underestimate balance in a team. it´s sometimes obviously that certain teams aren´t balanced just look at liverpool last weekend. they played coutinho, suarez, sturridge and sterling in their starting XI which ended up being 2:0 down. after introducing lucas they´ve played 2:2 in the end having the better chances to win the game.

now what I want to say is right now we look on top of our game, winning basically every winnable game and don´t drop silly points. we were pretty bad as a whole against city but we´ve played away from home so beside the result of 6:3 you can argue losing over there isn´t that big of a problem really … the home game against chelsea was more not-to-lose than winning and we did beside probably the worst refereeing in EPL history … we are very well balanced right now and I don´t want to say giroud is anywhere near world class but he provides our team with strength, especially areal, which seem to be exactly what we need from our target man upfront …

we shouldn´t just look at top class strikers … we should look at somebody with certain attributes which allows him to play in our system and still provides the parts giroud does which is mainly areal strength as well as link up play. can we get someone? of course we can. but I really believe those guys of players are rarely called world class forwards so some of us wouldn´t be too happy if we sign someone like giroud. I´d say there is a reason why barca and real don´t have THAT top class strikers, nor has bayern. they don´t need them in their system and I really start to believe we may well don´t need one.

  42. Dialtriangle

It’s difficult not to scoff at some of the supporters on here that really think they are BETTER than other supporters because they refuse to criticise the club.

Revving Kevin says “I see myself as an antidote to their poison, if that makes sense.”

Good post mate. Look you have your opinion and I respect that. I have mine you respect that, great.
You showed class with Man Gobs assault on the disabled. So you are a decent bloke.

Neither of us is less worthy. But that’s Becos we are adults and can debate and agree to disagree. Some of these people on here are irrational social deviants. Sorry but they are. Man Gob is a classic example of a cyber bully. Their opinion is all that matters. They are right and everyone else is a Wenger apologist or AKB. When you see their ring leader not only slagging off Wengr and the players but also taking the piss out of disabled people, speaks volumes. Complete morons mate.

Look at this other plank DialTriangle. He laughed at Man Gobs disabled quotes and posted his own. This is how thick and indecent they are, they think that’s clever. This is a social issue, nothing to do with football but they use a football blog as they have sad lives.

If you paid a little more attention, sure it seems like a wind up, but honestly can you not see the irony in someone complaining about the word ‘mong’ while shortly before laughing about a gay ‘transfer fairy.’ You can’t pick and choose what’s offensive based on your own parameters.

You’re just a stubborn old bloke that can’t see anything other that his own ways. You don’t even realize that while lauding the virtues of the ability to agree and disagree, you go ahead and slag the other posters that have never agreed with you.

But you’re right, this is a football blog. I suppose its not the correct place to point out your hypocrisy.

If you’re still there, no, I wouldn’t be happy with an unknown from France. There are plenty of talented strikers out there — young or otherwise.

We don’t need an unknown. We already have Sanogo — a complete dud — for God’s sake.

  51. Sam

Wenger said Yaya Sanogo is coming back next week.

Nope, Physion room said his return date is 8 February that’s in 2 week

  52. Dark Hei

    – I think we need to buy a striker
    – I don’t think there is any striker out there available in Jan that is realistically better than Bendter
    – I think Nasri is right that we messed up the summer thingy for striker.
    – On the other hand, I think Ozil is very much a necessary purchase. His ability to control matches is unrivalled. I don’t think he has been doing badly and I think his continued availability is very important to Arsenal.

    Question? Am I an AKB?

  53. Evan

    – I don’t think there is any striker out there available in Jan that is realistically better than Bendter

Arsene fooled you into believing Nik is an unstoppable force and there is no one better, this would suggest you may well be an akb 😉

  54. ArseneWengerNose

I’m really not sure what to make of all of this. A part of me fears a February/March collapse and a Groundhog day season, but at the same time, one has to admit, the way we’re playing right now is different than anything I’ve seen from a Wenger side in recent memory. People talk about being top at the end of the year, but when was the last time we had the best defense in the league halfway through the season?

And yet, despite eveything we’ve done, we’re only one point ahead, behind two very good teams. We may very well not win the league whether we sign anybody or not. And thus, I really think Wenger is in a very difficult position. Not to say that he wasn’t at fault in the past, but this season in particular, I’m not sure harsh criticism is justified.

Looking at the fixtures, March for me is probably the most important month of the season. February is huge too, with two big league games against Liverpool (A) and Man U (H), but in March I belive the title will be won or lost, with three games against Tottnham (A), Chelsea (A), and Man C (H). If we’re still top by then, and that’s a huge if I know, we’ll win the league. I just hope regardless of whether we sign anybody or not, that we can at least play with our best 11 in these games, and just throw it all out there.

Exciting few weeks coming up. It could all go wrong very fast, but that’s what football is all about. No point in being negative all the time. COYG!

  55. ArseneWengerNose

    Evan
I agree mate. When you make a blanket statement claiming that NOBODY out there is better than what we have, you always risk losing credibility.

Bendtner barely played regular football in over a year, he should be 3rd option at best. How many goals did Man City’s third option score this season? Remember these are the teams we’re competing with.

  56. Savage

The Mata problem is the same as the Podolski problem – wide players have to track back in the modern game.

One other thing to add though: Mourinho thinks from the defence forward, so Mata’s offensive contribution is under-rated to Jose the Unhappy One.

I liked what the BBC said though: imagine if Benitez had just sold Mata to United?

  57. Thank you and goodnight

Mata is a good buy for United and shows intent from them. I hope our lack of activity this summer gone, won’t come back to bite us on the bum. Giroud isn’t good enough to lead the line even though he’s done an admirable job up to now.

  58. THOROUGH

DARK HEI. With your assertions above, especially that there is no available striker in January better than Bendtner, you are not an AKB, you are rather a moron. Jelavic, Long, Berbatov, Ba, Baloteli, JacksonMartinez. Muriel, just to mention a few.

  59. Nasri's Mouth

THOROUGH: Jelavic, Long, Berbatov, Ba, Baloteli, JacksonMartinez. Muriel, just to mention a few.

    Jelavic, No.
    Long. HAHAHA
    Berbatov maybe
Ba not for sale. We know this because Mourinho said so
    Balotelli not for sale. mad
Martinez signing a new contract, not for sale
Muriel possibly but you don’t actually know

So it’s excessive to call someone a moron really isn’t it?

  60. samsensible

It’s not a question of whether there is better out there than Giroud and Bendtner it’s a question of whether they are available; are the player’s club prepared to sell for a price that is vaguely acceptable and does the player want to come?

It’s pretty empty-headed to ignore these considerations.

  61. Savage

    Wenger:
“If you imagine tomorrow 20 clubs in the Premier League with 20 multi-billionaires (owners) – at some stage they have to sit down and say ‘look, are we killing each other just for the sake to pay higher wages or do we make a rule that makes sense?’ It will happen in the longer term, there’s no other way,” he said.

“Until now, we only had one or two billionaires at the start, but once we have 10, they have to respect some rules or they kill each other and it is endless.”

This is very true. What it means also is that without FFP you won’t be able to compete without a sugar daddy.

Bamford, that was the point I was making really, if we signed someone that none of us had heard of but was great, no one would give him a chance because he was an unknown. I mean look at Sanogo, forget the injury, watch some of his YouTube stuff, yeah he looks rusty, but he’s similar to a young Adebayor so he could end up being just what we need, I doubt it, but it’s possible. The fact is if we buy a player now we are going to have to pay over the odds, which I’m all for, but I would wait until summer for Draxler when his contract clause kicks in rather than attempt that now.

Johnty79, you really are a pleb.

Well said about Dial mate. He needs a smack in the mouth. The ‘joke’ by invincibles wasn’t right, and I’m not sticking up for him, but dials comments are disgusting

TYAG, He is obviously a poster under a different name usually but I’m not sure which, but when he comes on as triangle he is a hateful little shit! I know it’s the internet and consequence free but I question the mind of someone who makes homophobic, racial or any prejudice joke! it’s cowardly and pathetic and dial regardless of who you really post as normally you are a tosser and the quicker you get found out the better. Don’t forget Pedro can check your IP so both versions of you will get banned.

Not sticking up for Invincebeles either but as I recall he ended the “joke” with a smiley to it wasn’t a red card offence imho.
I’m not up for any jokes that are clearly hurtful, what is the point.

“…………….I know it’s the internet and consequence free”

Actually it’s so longer consequence free.
These days folks can and do get arrested for things they publish (say/write).

So, it’s most probably bollocks but reports are suggesting we have agreed a fee for Draxler! Like I say it’s most probably a load of shit but would people be happy with this? Would it dull the thirst for blood from the WOB’s?

  71. N5

I think that is true on Twitter and Facebook Norfolk, but I’m yet to see it on blogs.

In regards to Invincibles joke, If I’m honest that went over my head so I hadn’t even noticed it. It wasn’t vile like triangle regardless of it’s content.

  72. Thank you and goodnight

    @Norfolk and N5

Again well said to the both of you. Dial ‘ s out of order with those comments. Kjafc hasn’t been on here since dial and Gambon’s comments. There’s humour and there’s taking things to far.
